WELCOME

Stadsparken - City Park

Welcome Örebro - Kumla - Hallsberg - Lekeberg In between Bergslagen’s formidable forests and Tiveden’s enchanting wilderness, the beautiful Närke plains extend. This is where Svealand’s most important roads have crossed since the Middle Ages, helping to create a region rich in history with excellent transport links. The city of Örebro lies in the heart of the region, and has always been a meeting place and a centre of commerce. From the earliest times of the castle’s history to today’s modern city with the Conventum conference facilities and one of Sweden’s most developed commercial cities. But the enduring memory for many visitors is often the beautiful inner city with the

Strolling in the city 4 5 6

mighty Vasa Castle in the city centre surrounded by parks, lake-side promenades and well-preserved buildings along the streets and squares. In addition, the countryside is always close at hand. Hjälmaren, Sweden’s fourth largest lake, is within walking distance of the city, and 20 km to the west, Kilsbergens’s magnificent blue hills await you. In southern Kilsbergen you will find Lekeberg municipality, which not only offers nature experiences but also has a wide range of historically interesting areas such as the monastery ruins in Riseberga as the jewel in the crown. And not far away, in the heart of the plain, is Kumla whose greatest attraction paradoxically is

a mountain. It is an artificial one, the fascinating Kvarntorpshögen slag heap which with its sculptures was recently designated Sweden’s most remarkable attraction. In the south, Hallsberg links together Svealand’s railway network offering attractions such as Karin Larsson’s childhood home, with paintings by her husband Carl, and the deep forests of the borderland next to Östergötland. There are a lot of exciting things to do. Just take a look around. Pop into one of our tourist offices or visit any of the tourist service locations, and we’ll tell you more. In the northern part of the city is Lilla Å-promenaden, offering a place to stroll and ride your bicycle. It is approximately four kilometres long and takes you out to the nature reserve OsetRynningeviken. Along the way you will be able to enjoy ten sculptures and visit an art studio. There is also a permanent illuminations display. “Fifteen metres of history” is a timeline on Järntorget that describes important events during the years 1810 to 2010 in Örebro, Sweden and the world. You will find it in front of the statue of Karl IV Johan (Jean Baptiste Bernadotte). The solar system in Örebro is a to-scale trek through the planets starting from the tourist office on Olof Palmes torg (Olof Palme’s square) via Drottninggatan-Storgatan to the water tower “Svampen” (a tower shaped like a mushroom). More information and maps of the area are available at our tourist offices.

Örebro CASTLE The castle’s history

The castle today

Many chapters in Swedish history have been written inside Örebro Castle’s thick walls.

Today, the former royal palace has become one of Örebro’s biggest tourist attractions, with exhibitions, shows and other events held throughout the year.

Sweden’s first Parliament Act was adopted here, and this is also where Karl XIII received the news that the 1810 Parliament in Örebro had chosen Jean Baptiste Bernadotte as heir to the Swedish throne.

There is also a restaurant with fantastic outdoor seating in summer, conference facilities and assembly rooms. In april, the tourist office and a shop will be opening in the castle.

The castle’s oldest parts were built in the 14th century, and at the end of the 16th century, Duke Karl, who later became King Karl IX transformed the then dilapidated medieval castle into a magnificent renaissance castle.

1

Guided tours of the castle Throughout the year at Örebro Castle During the summer, there are daily guided tours of Örebro Castle, a trip to times gone by. Hear about nobles, prisoners and servants and of known and unknown episodes from the castle’s history. The rest of the year the castle has guided tours every Saturday and Sunday. At Easter, it is “Witch Week”, and around Halloween “Ghost Week” when you can go on adventures in the middle of the night – but only if you are brave enough! During the school holidays, special guided tours are arranged for children, and on Saturdays and Sundays, you can book children’s parties at the castle. 2

Svampen Karlslund The cultural reserve Karlslund is a scenic area with a long history and is only five kilometres from Örebro centre. In this idyll you will find beautiful nature, cultural and industrial history, artisan towns, shops, a garden for children and Tekniska kvarnen, page 16-17. The culture reserve Karlslund was a popular place to visit as early as the 19th century. It was a beautiful area at a reasonable distance from Örebro. And it still is today. Karlslund’s manor house and its gardens also offer exciting environments and experiences. In Anckarsvärds magasin there is the exhibition “Magasinet (the warehouse) – about distilled liquor, life at the manor and mechanical contraptions”. The exhibition provides a background to Karlslund’s history. During the summer of 2014 there will also be a photography exhibition at various places throughout the area.

3

The dairy (Mejeriet) houses the “Farm labourers’ museum” with a worker’s home from the 1930s; and in Karlslund’s power station on certain days, you will be able to take a look at the 100-year-old turbines. In Karlslund’s old mill building from 1889 there is a modern and exciting technological museum filled with experiences for the whole family. The children’s garden forms a part of the area with willow tunnels, themed gardens and a maze. Don’t miss strolling around the beautiful parks and gardens in Karlslund, where there is a lot to discover. Visit the kitchen garden with lush green vegetables and flowers. In short – Karlslund is the perfect destination!

5 The water tower Svampen (the mushroom) was opened in May 1958. Since that time, Svampen has been one of Örebro’s most popular attractions. Since Svampen was built, approximately 8 million people have had the opportunity to see Örebro from its top. Svampen was built during the period 1955-57. The water tower was put into operation in 1957 and was officially opened during spring 1958. The designer and architect was Sune

Lindström, AB Vattenbyggnadsbyrån Stockholm. The tower is 58 metres high and can accommodate 9 million litres of water. Svampen has just over 100,000 visitors every year. There is a sister tower in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia which is 33% larger. Svampen is still used as a water tower. The water is pumped up into the hat which acts as a reservoir and a pressure equalizer for Örebro’s drinking water. At the moment the watertower is closed for renovation, see website for information on when it will reopen.

Stortorget & St. Nicolai Church Stortorget (the town square) is one of Örebro’s most important historical places. This is where St. Nicolai Church is, the city’s principal church since the Middle Ages, but also the place where Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was elected heir to the throne in 1810. The neo-Gothic town hall is also on the square with its glockenspiel, which in winter houses Sweden’s largest advent calendar. It is also here in front of the church, that the largest Christmas concert, O Holy night, is performed every year on the 2nd Sunday of Advent.

There are adventure water parks, and then there’s Gustavsvik’s Adventure Water Park On wooden suspension bridges, under the swaying palm trees, you climb up to the top of Europe’s longest wild water rapids. Then it’s full steam ahead! If that is not enough, then there are climbing-walls and water slides such as the incredible Space Bowl and Black Hole that start right next to the ceiling. It only takes 10 seconds, from top to bottom until you land in a complete daze in one of the pools. If you are looking more tranquil challenges? Then there is the tropical lagoon with sharks and other tropical fish, a large wave pool, jacuzzis and a complete play area for the youngest children.

Outside you can bathe in the heated swimming pools and enjoy water slides, a children’s paddling pool, and large grassy areas where you can relax in the sun, or perhaps play a game of badminton, basketball, boules, baseball or football, for example. Next to the water park is one of Europe’s best campsites, the 5-star Gustavsvik campsite with adventure golf, where you play in a miniature Örebro. Tip! Combine a visit to Northern Europe’s largest indoor swimming pool and Europe’s largest indoor playland! Björktjärn, Bergslagsleden - stage 10

Hiking The 280 km long Bergslagsleden is one of Sweden’s longest hiking trails. The trail is divided into 17 stages that are between 7 and 23 km long. Stages 8-13 cross the Kilsbergen mountains and are easily reached from Örebro. In Ånnaboda there are also several circular loops of different lengths. Generally speaking, the terrain is more demanding on the Bergslag trail the further north you go, and the further south you go, the flatter the terrain. Maps and more information can be found on www.bergslagsleden.se Besides the Bergslag trail, there are a great number of hiking trails in Örebro and throughout the county.

Canoeing and fishing Some of the country’s most diverse canoeing waters are also found here. You choose if you want to paddle from the city onto lake Hjälmaren, in Vättern’s outer archipelago, or leisurely make your way down the winding Nittälven, with the wilderness as your closest neighbour. Don’t forget you fishing rod, in Lake Hjälmaren and Svartån you can fish without purchasing a permit, otherwise a fishing permit is required in most areas.

Many of them are made for multi-day trips, others are appropriate for a pleasant day out. If you would like to see something different and cool, choose a cave tour in Skärmarboda or perhaps a pilgrimage at Munkastigen. The tour starts at the Riseberga monastery ruins and goes to the Birgitta Church in Olshammar, a total of 96 km in five stages – it is called the Birgitta trail. Kvarntorp’s open-air recreation area is an attractive area with extensive plant and animal life. The area has an 18-hole golf course, over 26 km of hiking trails across varying nature, horse riding trails, barbecue areas, the nature reserves Norra Mossby and Hällkistan, open-air bathing at Hästhagsbrottet, fishing opportunities in the water-filled pits, and the Stenarbetsmuseum (Stonework museum) in Yxhult, read more on page 20. NATIONAL PARK AND NATURE RESERVE

National park / Nature reserve Garphyttan’s National Park, at the foot of Kilsbergen, is preserving the old cultivated landscapes characterised by stony, undulating terrain. Lush meadows full of flowers are surrounded by dense natural forests in one of Sweden’s oldest national parks. The park features several walking trails of varying lengths and difficulty. Around Kumla is Björka clay pit, and Hult’s and Viaskogen’s nature reserves. The latter offer diverse and sometimes unique species. There are walks, barbeque areas and an illuminated jogging track. In Hällabrottet, East of Kumla is Norra Mossby and Hällkistan. The nature reserve Skåle klint offers fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. Bring a packed lunch on a clear day and enjoy the scenery from above. Skåle klint is a part of the fault scarp which formed the southern shore of Lake Tisaren. Primary rock is dominant here and forms a majestic area where deep, damp rift valleys cut

trough the area from several directions. From Skåle klint there are fantastic views. Skåle klint reaches a height of 195 m above sea level and around 95 m above the surface of Lake Tisaren! At the edge of the hill is Skåle farm where farming was still being carried out well into the 1960s, nowadays the land around the farm is used for grazing. The area is well equipped for visitors, with car parks, a beach and barbeque areas etc. Dovrasjödalen is a popular destination due to the area’s wilderness character with long, narrow lakes which lie in a deep rift valley in the bedrock. Tekniska Kvarnen Karlslund

The children’s garden Karlslund

The Toy Museum for all ages

Children’s Upptäckarhuset

In Karlslund’s old mill building from 1889 there is a modern and exciting technical museum filled with experiences for the whole family. In the basement there is the new interactive exhibition “Kretsloppslandet” on the theme of sustainable development. See what happens to the waste and water on its way through Örebro and compete in the ”toilet basket”. You’ll also be able to discover Sweden’s largest model railway, where seven trains rush back and forth in a miniature Mälardalen. Make a soap bubble with yourself inside. In Electra, you can cycle on the energy bike – start pedalling and the lights come on and the radio starts to play.

In Karlslund’s beautiful garden complex you will find Barnens trädgård (the children’s garden). Here you will be carried away on an adventure in a world where characters such as the magician, the giant and the princess all live.

Just to the west of Fjugesta, in the heart of Närke, is Leksaksnostalgirum (toy museum) filled with over 2,500 toys from the 1950’s and 1960’s.

How many teeth do you have? What is it like to sit in a wheelchair? At the Children’s Upptäckarhuset (House of Discovery) there are lots of activities for curious children. Here you can be a fire-fighter, open your own business, put on a stage show or try on the fantastic range of fancy dress costumes. Bu the question is, are you brave enough to venture into the dark room? At the children’s own House of Discovery, you can play, experience and learn. There is also a snack bar – Café Nyfiket, and shopping in Upptäckarshoppen.

Climb up on the giant’s giant-sized kitchen furniture or try sitting on the dragon’s bench – if you dare. In the princess’ pavilion, you can dance on her beautiful floor. Play hide and seek in the long tunnels or go exploring in the long maze. In Diedens Lekstuga (Diedens’ Playhouse), you can cook food on the stove, or set the table for a nice cup of tea and some scones.

Here is Jan Myrtorp showing parts of his large toy collection. The emphasis is on cars, trains and planes made of lithographed metal plate, but there are also toys made of plastic as well as a section for wooden toys. In addition, you will find “fabric dogs”, games and puzzles, dollhouses, pedal cars and much more. Toys of all kinds, large and small, inexpensive and expensive. New and worn, simple and complex.

ART AND CULTURE 6

At Örebro County Museum in Slottsparken (the Castle Park) you can experience everything from silver treasures from the Viking age to contemporary art. You will most certainly be fascinated by the jewellery and weapons in Klenodkammaren or try your luck on a dig “as an archaeologist” in the exhibition “Secrets in the earth”. Look at the model of Örebro, 200 years ago or make your own gold coins in the antiquity exhibition. The popular family exhibition “Fågel, fisk eller mittemellan” depicts a fantastic world of animals and plants, here you can experience the Örebro artist Karl Axel Pehrson’s works of art with all your senses. Look at the famous Guldbaggen that has been the model for Sweden’s most prestigious film prize, do an art puzzle, listen to the water lapping up against the shore or play in the jungle room. During the summer, we display a sample from our collection of photographs from Örebro-Kuriren. The photographers relate the stories behind the photographs.

Last year the Örebro County Museum’s fantastic building celebrated its 50th anniversary. It was completed in 1963 and the architect responsible was Nils Tesch. He was one of Sweden’s greatest architects at that time and was inspired by both classical architecture and new tendencies. The County Museum building he likened to a woman’s shoe – ”pretty on the outside and spacious inside”. When you visit us you can also enjoy a vegetarian buffet or a cup of coffee with home-baked bread at Rosengrens skafferi. Feel the tranquillity of our beautiful Atrium courtyard, or take a walk around the building to look at our fine collection of public art. We also have a well stocked museum shop, including jewellery, arts and crafts, toys, books and products unique to the museum. At Örebro County Museum there is something for all ages.

Örebro Konsthall

Theatre and music Örebro

Örebro 750 years 2015

A new glow-in-the-dark exhibition building makes Gallery Örsta Sweden’s most exciting art gallery. The gallery looks like it is sparkling and shining and this is due to the fact that three tonnes of glass were sprayed into the paint used on the facade. An architectural effect that is itself a work of art, designed by Mikael Pauli. In the Gallery, the Nordic region’s finest artists will be presented. The gallery was designed by architect’s office Claesson Koivisto Rune and has an area of 350 m2.

Örebro Konsthall is a contemporary art gallery with short-term exhibitions, it aims to provide exciting art experiences for the people of Örebro and visitors to the city by displaying Swedish and international contemporary art which is of a high quality.

In 2011, a gigantic yellow rabbit which appeared in Stortorget gained worldwide attention, and two years later, it was an even bigger boy who peed in the Svartån river in front of the castle that became the hot topic of conversation. Open ART exhibits every two years and the next opportunity is during the Jubilee year in 2015.

Järle station Vintage railway

Friluftsmuseet Wadköping In Wadköping, you’ll experience Örebro as it was before. The open-air museum was created in the 1960s and is made up of farms that were saved from demolition in the southern part of central Örebro. Today, it may be difficult to imagine that the small timbered farms were once Örebro’s grandest buildings. Here lived distinguished shoemakers, shipmasters and weavers who supplied their wares to the King himself! Today, the small houses are used as handicraft shops, boutiques and museums; they are also used as dwellings, which

7 makes Wadköping a vibrant part of town. Enjoy the atmosphere! Relax with a cup of coffee in the square. Smell the freshly baked bread from the bakery, see the wood-turner at work and visit one of the exhibitions in Cajsa Warg’s house (the cookbook pioneer) and the King’s cottage from the 16th century. The youngsters will be able to look after the animals and open their own shop in Lekladan, see page 15. In Wadköping there is always something happening so don’t forget to take a look at the calendar on the home page. Musical entertainment, summer theatre, puppetry and markets such as the popular Christmas and medieval markets, antique and bric-a-brac, and a “turn of the century” market.

In Järle, you can really travel through time. The vintage train departs from the tiny station and takes you to the “iron-makers community” Pershyttan and to the idyllic “wooden” town of Nora. Järle station is actually the oldest in the country. The station building was built in 1854 next to Sweden’s first railway line. Trains depart throughout the summer and you can choose between an authentic steam train or a vintage railcar.

9

Hallsberg Railway station Hallsberg plays a central role in the Swedish rail network, the marshalling yards there are the largest in Scandinavia. Hallsberg was created as a result of the development of the main line between Stockholm and Gothenburg which was completed in 1862, with the station area being completed a few years later.

Brevens bruk

Riseberga Monastery ruins

Discover a real cultural treasure in the forests near the border to Östergötland.

Kvarngården in Mullhyttan is a living historical environment. In the area, there is an old mill used by the village since the 18th century. With the help of a 2.4 m water wheel, organically grown wheat and rye is milled into flour which you can buy in the little shop. In the wood-fired baker’s cottage, Hyttkaka and Kvarnbröd are baked. A scale model 1:100 of the area as it looked 150 years ago can also be viewed.

The small industrial community Brevens Bruk, 50 km southeast of Örebro is a cultural treasure. The village is different from other mining communities as a result of all the yellow buildings from the 17th century onwards which can be seen throughout the well-preserved village.

Tip! Don’t miss MullhytteMarken 12-13 July. Saturday is market day and Sunday is handicraft day, when new and ancient crafts are on display.

Tip! Midsummer celebrations are a tradition with 200-yearold rituals. Don’t miss it!

Riseberga Monastery outside Fjugesta was founded in the 12th century. At its height it owned 240 properties in six provinces, but Gustav Vasa and a great fire in 1546 put a stop to its activities and the buildings were left to decline. Today only parts of the western wall of the church remain and the entire convent area has recently been renovated. Guided tours are arranged every Wednesday at 18.00 throughout the summer months. Nearby is a huge amphitheatre, where plays and concerts are arranged.

Around the fairytale castle Boo with its pinnacles and turrets is Boo mansion and its estate. Many of the buildings were constructed in the ancient Greek style, such as the church and church school with their mighty columns. Marvel also over the exciting flora and rich wildlife. One tip is to visit the area around the estate at dusk or dawn, there is an excellent chance that you will encounter a herd of wild fallow deer, roe deer, moose and other wildlife.

Military museum Sannahed

Stonework Museum Hällabrottet

Two hundred years ago, funds were donated by Anders Lundmark to build the school house. More than 40 years before the school reform was introduced, teaching started here in Hardemo parish. The school which was used every day up until the 1960s is now a museum and displays the classroom and the teacher’s accommodation from the end of the 19th century.

These days it is calm in the small community between Kumla and Hallsberg. But 100 years ago, Sannahed was one of Sweden’s largest military practice grounds and barracks. Enjoy a walk through the 2.5 km trail “Regementsmarschen” (the Regiment march). There is a newly opened equipment store which is 150 m north of the military museum. It is a storage building built for military purposes and it is also a shop. Today it houses around 19 different museums which all have different themes depicting how we once lived. Also take a look at the stately hall of the officers mess, see the Museum of military history and the cottage of the Hussar officers which depicts how the Hussar Corps had their barracks during the 19th century. Kumla-Sannahed’s old homestead museum is next to the museum on the other side of the road.

In Hällabrottet, east of Kumla, stone has been quarried and worked since the Middle Ages. Over half of the stonework decorating the facades of Stockholm’s inner city buildings comes from Hällabrottet. A new museum is being created here depicting the history of the stonework with a marble collection and a unique collection of fullscale plaster models used by the sculptors and ornament makers as models. A unique marble floor is on display in the former head office of the Yxhult factory in a separate building located 100 m from the museum.

Karlskoga

Nora

In Karlskoga, four miles west of Örebro, you can meet the world’s most famous Swede! The Nobel Museum in Karlskoga is Alfred Nobel’s last Swedish home, Björkborn Manor, and the laboratory where he developed many of his inventions. You can also meet the great inventor himself in person on the theatrical guided tours that are arranged.

The idyllic “wooden town” of Nora, 30 km north of Örebro, is one of Bergslagen’s gems. In Nora, there is not one house the same as the other, and on the little square there are small boutiques, the town hotel and the church. Stroll around and enjoy the picturesque environment. Enjoy an ice cream (Nora-Glass) and stroll down to the lake. The tourist office is located in the old station house and right next door is the railway museum with steam locomotives, old rail cars, trolleys and engine depots. And best of all, it is a living museum!

Next to the laboratory is Fiffiga Huset, an experimental workshop with techical gadgetry and exciting phenomena for children of all ages. More exciting experiences in Karlskoga await you at the Adventure House BodaBorg. There are plenty of rooms that offer challenges, both for those who love to climb and for those who prefer to solve mind-bending challenges.

Kopparberg

From here you can go on a tour of the classic “iron-makers community” Pershyttan, and experience a piece of Swedish industrial history. More history can be found in the Göthlinska farm, whose interior has been preserved – it still looks like it did 100 years ago when Miss Ingrid Göthlin lived there.

It is in the small town of Skoga that most of the murders in Maria Lang’s novels were committed. If it is difficult to find Skoga on the map, it is because Skoga is a cover name for Nora. Maria Lang’s novels are more or less guide books and have given rise to a number of town walks in her footsteps. The murder scenes remain, and for the people of Nora, there is status in having had a Maria Lang corpse in the wardrobe. The first film “The killer is not the only liar” was released in the cinemas in early March 2013, and a further five film adaptations premiered last autumn.

Eighty km north of Örebro, just next to the border of Dalarna, is the idyllic Kopparberg. Nestled in beautiful countryside is a well-preserved mining community with many beautiful buildings from the golden age of mining. Two of the most splendid buildings include the beautiful courthouse and the stately red wood chip panel church. There are also several small museums, including a postal museum dedicated to the unique yellow three skilling banco-stamp, the world’s most expensive stamp. In Kopparberg, you can try to pan for gold under the expert supervision of two world champions. This year you have the chance to experience a genuine gold panning competition during the world championships from 11th to 17th August. In connection with the world championships, Kopparberg will be filled to capacity as a result of the “Gold Rush” an event with musical entertainment and many other golden activities.

Loka

Grythyttan

Tiveden

Askersund

Loka is a well-known trademark in Sweden. However Loka is so much more than refreshing bottled mineral water. In the middle of the enchanting Bergslagen forest lies the ancient spring to which visitors have flocked for over 300 years. Relax with a spa experience in the fantastic Water Salon (Vattensalongen) and enjoy a meal to remember in the restaurant. Or work up a sweat in the new gym and then unwind next to the small lake. Loka Brunn is 30 km north of Karlskoga, just south of Grythyttan.

Few Swedish Inns are so distinguished as Grythyttan Gästgivaregård. Most people will probably think of Carl Jan Granqvist who ran it until 1999. But the facilities date back to Queen Christina’s time. Grythyttan Gästgivaregård is the perfect 4 star hotel in Sweden for guests to thoroughly unwind at. Relax with a good book in one of the lounges or go for a lovely walk around the idyllic village and to the spectacular Måltidens Hus. Naturally you will be able to end the day with a delicious meal.

In the magical primaeval forest of Tiveden, adventure is never far away. Experience the enchanting beautiful nature with its huge boulders, deep canyons and steep mountain ridges. You can choose yourself how to get the best experience from Tiveden. On foot, by bike or even on horseback? Or why not try a peaceful canoeing trip on one of the beautiful lakes? Maybe on the Lake Trehörningen to beautiful Vitsand? The hullabaloo of big-city life is far far away – despite the fact that it is no more than 60 km to Örebro. Part of Tiveden is made up of the national park where you can hike to Lake Fagertärn where the unique red water lilies bloom.

At the northern tip of Lake Vättern is the beautiful port city of Askersund. Join us on a cruise on the M/S Wettervik and experience the stunningly beautiful archipelago. You can also choose to get off the boat at Karl XIV Johan’s Summer Palace Stjernsund and go on a guided tour of one of Sweden’s best preserved environments from the early 19th century. (You can of course also reach the castle by car.) Or just enjoy the delightful harbour environment. Perhaps with an ice cream at the wharf. Or at one of the outdoor restaurants. But even the rest of the town is just perfect for relaxing walks where you can enjoy a quiet moment at one of the small cafes you encounter along the way. Just south of Askersund is Närke’s best bathing area, Hargebaden with shallow waters and a fantastic sandy beach.

Alpine Storstenshöjden

Cross-country skiing Ånnaboda

Ice Skating Hemfjärden

More winter fun

Storstenshöjden is 20 km of Örebro. There are nine specially prepared pistes, a “crossover land” and sledding slopes that attract families and skiing experts alike. Storstenshöjden is Johan Brolenius’ (former alpine skier) home slope. The lift queues are seldom long; the five lifts have a capacity of 5,000 people per hour and it is extremely safe on the pistes.

If you prefer cross-country skiing, head for Ånnaboda right next to Storstenshöjden. There are more than 70 km of prepared ski trails ranging from short loops to the 27 km long Kilsbergsspåret (Kilsberg trail) that runs all the way to Nora. At the Kilsbergen Konferens and Lodge in Ånnaboda there is also a 5 km long artificial snow trail.

At Rävgången, in the southern part of Rynningeviken, the ice is prepared during the winter for ice skating. There are ploughed ice roads, one of which leads from Rävgången to Lindholmen which is 7 km long.

For the kids or those who do not like high altitudes, there are several excellent sledding slopes throughout the Örebro region.

On the beach there is a tourist cottage with a fireplace, where you can warm up after your trek across the ice. Always be careful on lake ice! Bring safety equipment and extra clothing.

1

Just east of the city is Sörbybacken, travel towards Norrköping, turn right at the roundabout by the university and right again at the next roundabout towards Sörbyängen. Vivallakullen is north of the city. Take Ekersvägen to the northwest of the city towards Vivalla. To the west is the gravel pit Karlslundsspåret. Drive in a westerly direction towards Karlslund to Karlslundsspåret.

In Kumla you can go alpine skiing at the Kvarntorpshögen slag heap. When the ski slope is open there is a heated cabin next to the hill. There is also sledding hill and prepared cross-country ski tracks in the area. Travel along route 51, approximately 20 km south of Örebro, turn off at Kvarntorp. www.kumlaskidforening.se
