The Woodland Trust The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading wood conservation charity. Over the last 30 years it has bought more than 1,000 woods. The Trust has over 300,000 members and supporters.

How did it start? The Woodland Trust’s founder was Kenneth Watkins, a retired farmer living in Devon. He was worried about how quickly woods were disappearing. He started the Trust with three friends in 1972. They started buying woods across the country in order to save them from being destroyed.

Why do woods matter? Trees are essential to life. Woods are important for wildlife and people. They stabilise the soil, generate oxygen and store carbon.
