Leading the Way in Sustainable, Urban Development VERTEX was engaged to evaluate environmental impacts and prepare a corresponding redevelopment plan associated with the 30-acre redevelopment parcel of land known as the NorthPoint Development. The property has a long, productive industrial history and is now a prime redevelopment site in the heart of Cambridge, Massachusetts. VERTEX prepared a compliance strategy and performed a site-wide subsurface investigation to develop a soil management plan determining which areas of the site are best suited for buildings, roadways, structured or paved parking and parks. Our extensive experience with distressed and disaster projects is one of the main reasons why so many of our clients rely on our seasoned litigation expertise.
Construction Raising the Bar on Construction Safety and Speed
Developing Cooperative Work Environments VERTEX performed construction management services for a national surety client at a 145,000 sf, multi-facility medical campus in Central Texas. The construction included renovations of a mixed-use medical office building, new construction of an industrial laundry facility, and renovations to an additional medical office and separate research laboratory. Renovations included complete build-outs of new electrical, plumbing, HVAC, communications, and security systems, as well as window and elevator installations, casework, and sidewalks. Despite the myriad of challenges that occur with a surety takeover project, VERTEX was able to value engineer multiple solutions for our client, including modification of a costly floor repair job. Project progress vastly improved with VERTEX’s involvement; specifically, VERTEX developed a cooperative environment and motivated many of the original subcontractors to continue their work, thereby maximizing value for the surety, owner, and end-user.
The Beauvallon is a 14-story, 208-unit luxury retail and residential high-rise in Denver, Colorado. VERTEX was retained as the construction manager to help oversee a major rehabilitation of the building’s interior and exterior, damaged by water infiltration from construction defects. The problems were severe and included the failure of critical building envelope components and colonization of microbial growth in building walls. The project involved the replacement of almost 750 windows and over 400 doors. The project also involved the removal of 225,000 square feet of existing Exterior Insulation and Finishing System (EIFS) and replacement with a water managed EIFS system. Over 200,000 man hours were performed on the project accident free and with zero OSHA-imposed fines or infractions. VERTEX greatly minimized day-to-day impacts on the tenants by employing a community liaison that helped homeowners make a smooth transition to temporary housing. The project was successfully completed within budget and 4 months ahead of schedule. This project is testament to VERTEX’s commitment to safety and service excellence.
Protecting Our Nation’s Protectors Camp Edwards is a 14,700-acre area on Cape Cod and home to the Massachusetts military reserves’ 3rd Battalion and 126th Aviation. The campus houses as many as 1,250 members of the Army National Guard in an ongoing training capacity. To avert a potential environmental emergency, VERTEX responded the same day to a Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) request to inspect buildings contaminated with asbestos. Thanks to the prompt action of VERTEX, Camp Edwards now has a viable emergency response asbestos abatement plan. By collaborating closely with MassDEP, VERTEX helped Camp Edwards meet all compliance requirements and execute asbestos removal activities in accordance with regulations.

Rebuilding in the Wake of Hurricane Sandy
Hurricane Sandy was a post-tropical cyclone that swept through the Caribbean and up the East Coast of the United States in October of 2012. The hurricane caused close to $62 billion in damage in the United States and at least $315 million in the Caribbean. In its immediate wake, VERTEX quickly mobilized engineering and construction specialist teams to evaluate the cost of damages to hundreds of buildings and structures within a three-month time frame. As a result, insurance companies were able to resolve coverage issues promptly to kick-start the rebuilding process.

Developing Solar PV Project In Zacatecas, Mexico, VERTEX is collaborating with local Mexican partners to develop the first utility-scale solar PV project in the state and one of the largest in Latin America overall. The 30-MW ZacSol 1 project is the first phase of up to 90 MW that will be installed near the municipality of Guadalupe over the next several years.
