Welcome Founded by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Boston University, Vesalius College is the oldest higher education institution in Brussels that offers Bachelor and Master programmes taught solely in the English language. We take great pride in the rich educational experience we give our students, and hope that you enjoy discovering more about the College. Thanks to the influence of our founders, we combine the strengths of two successful academic models: we offer students an American-style curriculum with small classes, interactive teaching and personalised attention and guidance whilst drawing upon the resources of two major European universities, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université libre de Bruxelles. Students from all over the world have been drawn by this academic excellence: more than 50 different nationalities are represented among our student body. Outside the classroom, students have the opportunity to reap the benefits of living in Brussels, the “Capital of Europe,” which is host to the European Union, NATO, and hundreds of embassies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and international businesses. An attractive internship programme allows students to gain valuable work experience in this stimulating environment. At Vesalius College, we ensure that we offer high-quality academic programmes that provide students with the tools and foundations necessary to think critically, expand their knowledge and develop areas of expertise. But our faculty – who hail from some of the most renowned academic institutions around the world – go a step further, ensuring that the theories taught are applied to real-life scenarios. Our central location in Brussels helps us to give our students access to this “real world” from the start of their studies. While continuing to undertake various research activities, our faculty ensure that they also manage their networks in Brussels and beyond. This allows them to hold guest lectures and workshops, often within the framework of academic programmes, putting students in direct contact with practitioners in the field and even potential future research partners, mentors or employers. Two recent initiatives highlight our efforts to bring Brussels to the classroom. First, in September 2012, we launched the Master of Science in European Union Policy (MSc EUP). This one-year programme combines advanced academic studies and policy-focused practical application, providing a comprehensive understanding of all of the major aspects and processes of EU policymaking. It is ideal for students who are interested in a career in the European policy sphere as well as those interested in pursuing more advanced studies in this field. Secondly, this fall, we are introducing the Executive Course in Global Risk Analysis & Crisis Management. The course prepares participants to identify and analyse global security risks and advance effective responses to humanitarian, military and political complex crises, and is comprised of a mixture of intensive ‘hands-on’ training courses and comprehensive lectures given by senior officials from major international organisations, NGOs and leading security scholars. It goes without saying that this exposure to the real world has paid off for our students. Following their studies at VeCo, our alumni have attended some of the top graduate schools in Europe and North America and have been employed at prestigious companies and organisations around the world. American-style education in the Capital of Europe Vesalius College (VeCo) was founded in 1987 to offer academic programmes in English, in association with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Boston University. As one of the first Colleges that brought American-style education to Europe, Vesalius College has been at the forefront of advancing innovative teaching approaches based on a liberal arts philosophy for a rigorous, global education. Interactive and Personalised Teaching At Vesalius College, classes are small but intellectually-diverse and marked by a highly-dynamic teaching style. The College’s teaching methods are characterised by interactive classes, flexibility in course selection, and continuous assessment. As a small college with a student body of approximately 300 and a low student-toprofessor ratio, the faculty is accessible and able to take a personal interest in the success of their students. These close working relationships form the cornerstone
of the Vesalius educational philosophy. As an American-style institution offering academic programmes taught in English, the College takes a humanistic approach to intellectual inquiry, encouraging students to not only learn skills and knowledge important for their chosen careers, but to also think critically and develop themselves personally and as citizens of an increasingly multicultural and globalised world. Brussels has an important international vocation: as the European capital, the city is home to the European Institutions, NATO and numerous international organisations and multinational companies. Our students can benefit from this international setting in many ways – through our academic programmes which have a strong European focus, our internship programme which offers exciting professional opportunities, or by attending guest lectures and workshops with Brussels-based experts.
Brussels is the bilingual capital of Belgium and both French and Dutch are the official languages of the city. It is a cosmopolitan city where many cultures live together and a number of different languages can be heard on each street. This liveliness and international flair is, of course, intimately related to its role as a crossroads for all of Europe.
Andreas Vesalius Students and parents often ask us about the origins of the name of the College. Born in Brussels, Andreas Vesalius was one of the premier freethinkers of the Renaissance. Known as the “father of modern anatomy,” he questioned centuries-old beliefs about how the human body functioned and revolutionised scientific study. Publicly challenging established theories, Vesalius embodied our college’s principle of liberal inquiry, unfettered by prejudice deriving from religion, race, gender, or political ideology.

Meet our Students Thanks to our diverse student body drawn from all corners of the globe, Vesalius College offers an enriching academic and cultural experience. With an emphasis placed on both group work and independent research, there is a natural exchange of experiences, cultures and beliefs between students. The student body at Vesalius College forms an active and tight academic and social community. And with over 50 nationalities represented, Vesalius College is a unique laboratory for the study of intercultural relations, providing students with the opportunity to work with and learn from each other, forming lasting friendships with people from many different cultures and perspectives.
They say education is not filling a bucket but lighting a fire. That’s exactly the feeling I had when first starting at Vesalius College. The education experience is undeniably excellent. Every day you learn something new, even outside the classroom. The professors are easily accessible, which makes students’ lives extremely easy. Our Bachelor’s degree programmes Academic Structure The Vesalius College undergraduate programme offers three-year European Bachelor’s degrees in accordance with the Bologna Reform of higher education. The academic programmes are designed to challenge students intellectually and personally, while also providing them with the resources and faculty support needed to excel. We ensure that our graduates are well-prepared for post-graduate studies or to begin a successful career. Our teaching philosophy and methods are based on American-style education, which includes interactive classroom discussions and continuous student assessment. Students select a major field of study but also choose from a wider range of disciplines and subjects through minors and the extensive list of elective courses. This educational system is designed to instil within students a spirit of critical inquiry, ethical responsibility, and personal fulfilment that leads to life-long learning.
Quality Instruction The quality and accessibility of the Vesalius faculty is at the very core of the academic experience at the College. More than 90% of the diverse faculty hold PhDs. Thus, students learn from experts with international backgrounds and perspectives. Low student-to-faculty ratios encourage camaraderie between teachers and students, and instructors take personal interest in the progress and success of their students. Guidance from Academic Advisors At the beginning of their studies, students are assigned to a professor who will act as their personal advisor. Our academic advisors assist students in identifying relevant courses, and offer support throughout their academic career at Vesalius College. Advisors will not only support the academic choices and development of their students, but will also act as personal mentors along
the long and often challenging journey of helping students to unlock their true potential and find their real passions. Students meet regularly with their advisors, either for “working lunches” or at least one formal dinner per semester. Vesalius College’s Bachelor degree programmes have 4 essential components: 1. The Core Curriculum A distinctive feature of the Bachelor’s programme at Vesalius College is the Core Curriculum. Fundamental core courses are taken by all students and add breadth to the Vesalius learning experience. Through classes like Writing & Critical Inquiry and Quantitative Methods, students learn to approach problems from different perspectives. In doing so, they learn how to be flexible and to adapt to change, nurture a spirit of critical inquiry, lead others by exercising intellectual judgment, and communicate effectively with diverse groups of people across many cultures and languages. 2. Major Once they enrol at Vesalius College, all students will choose a major – the academic subject in which they will specialise. Vesalius College offers majors in Business, Communications and International Affairs. The department offering the Major defines a framework for this specialised portion of the student’s studies, including a certain number of required courses and freely-chosen courses relevant to the major. 3. The Major Elective and Free Elective Courses Major electives are courses within the major that offer the student a wide range of choice within their area of specialisation. Free elective courses allow students to pursue interests outside their major. Students can choose free electives from their major, from other majors or from outside any of the majors, for example: • Law • Chinese • Psychology • French • Philosophy • Dutch • Natural Science
Besides the electives offered by Vesalius College, students can take free elective courses with one of our partner institutions in Brussels. These partner institutions include: • Brussels Institute of Contemporary China Studies (BICCS) • Institute for European Studies (IES) • Royal Music Conservatory Brussels • Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) 4. Minor An academic minor is a student’s secondary field of study or specialisation during his or her undergraduate studies. As with a major, the College lays out a framework of required classes or class types that a student must complete in order to earn the selected minor. Students can choose a minor that falls within any of the three majors, regardless of their major. Some students will prepare for their intended career with their major while pursuing personal interests with a minor. For example, some students may major in Business and minor in Global Governance. Other students may pursue a minor to provide a certain specialisation and thus make themselves more attractive to employers. For example, it is not infrequent for an International Affairs major to minor in European Studies. Bachelor in Business Studies About the Programme Successful business managers today are faced with unique challenges in an ever-changing international business environment. The Business Studies programme at Vesalius College provides the skills and foundation necessary to become an internationally-versed business leader. At the heart of Europe, Brussels is home to countless internationally-operating corporations and organisations, including NATO and the European Union. Business students at Vesalius College bring a wealth of international perspectives to the study programme and gain valuable insight into the world of international business. The Bachelor programme gives students a combination of theoretical and practical skills, including an understanding of how businesses are organised, managed and function within the larger economic, social, legal and political context. In their last semester, students bring together what they have learnt, either in the analysis of case studies of business behaviour or in the development of a business plan for a small enterprise within a cohort of like-minded and highly-motivated international students. By making full use of bridge-building opportunities with the two other major departments of the College (Communication Studies and International Affairs) and by significantly broadening their cross-cultural skills, students receive theoretical and practical training in a number of fields, which prepares them to operate effectively in a professional environment. Business students at Vesalius College can choose from a variety of prestigious internships in the Brussels area to apply business concepts and tools in a concrete international business environment.

Through Vesalius College’s extensive network, students can establish contacts and pursue networking opportunities that will be valuable throughout their careers. Students learn from a wide range of experienced guest lecturers including senior corporate managers, entrepreneurs, consultants and other business professionals.
Career Perspectives Students graduating from our Business Studies programme possess a solid foundation in the functional areas of globally operating companies. The programme prepares students not only for prestigious management positions, but also for leadership responsibilities. Many of our students have used Vesalius College’s extensive academic network in Brussels and abroad to pursue a Master’s degree in a wide range of fields, including management, business, banking & finance, economics, trade and more. Our Business graduates have successfully completed postgraduate studies in a number of prestigious universities, including Solvay Business School, the University of Saint Andrews, London School of Economics, IE Business School, Bocconi University, Boston University and many others.
Business Studies Capstone: Corporate Strategy This capstone course is taught through theory and case studies, and greatly encourages students to think critically, to participate in class debates and to give oral presentations. It focuses on strategy formulation, implementation and performance. Taking a hands-on approach, the course aims to identify and analyse companies’ external opportunities and constraints. In addition, students learn to reflect on how these companies may develop internal capabilities in
response to these factors. The course also investigates the main functions of a company: products/services, research and development, manufacturing, logistics, marketing, finance/accounting, and human resources.
Business Studies Capstone: International Marketing This course focuses on international marketing, and how to enter and operate effectively in foreign markets. It introduces suitable ways to select international markets and discusses alternative strategies to enter those markets through comparing, contrasting and benchmarking those foreign markets’ socio-cultural, political, economic, and legal characteristics. It will provide marketing knowledge that strikes a balance between localisation and globalisation in product, promotion, pricing, and distribution, to meet the needs and expectations of the chosen foreign market. The course is taught through theory, organisational evaluations, and case studies, and encourages students to think critically, to participate in class debates, and to give oral presentations.

Communication Studies Capstone: Public Diplomacy The capstone course requires students to integrate the knowledge and apply the skills acquired throughout their work in their majors, and gives them the opportunity to work on an extended research project. By calling for sophisticated understanding of theoretical issues as well as an appreciation of ways to construct empirical research solutions, it also prepares students for independent research at the graduate level. The capstone course for Communication Studies is designed to develop an understanding of a key aspect of modern communications, namely the attempts made by state and non-state actors to influence public opinion through strategic communication policies and ‘soft power’. The course will focus on the different global approaches to public diplomacy and the role of public diplomacy in foreign policy. With its network of international organisations, national diplomatic missions and media outlets, Brussels provides an ideal venue for studying and understanding public diplomacy conceptually as well as from the viewpoint of practitioners. International Affairs Capstone: “From Theory to Policy Advice”: Teaming up with the European Union for “Real-Life” Education VeCo prides itself in its unique ability to train students to apply their theoretical and analytical knowledge to real-life situations. Towards the end of their 3-year BA studies, VeCo students will be trained comprehensively to apply their diverse
knowledge to a real-life problem. Utilising VeCo’s unique access to Brusselsbased policy circles and international organisations, students spend a semester as personal policy advisors to a highranking diplomat on a highly-relevant and current foreign policy issue. For example, the spring 2013 Capstone Class (“From Theory to Policy Advice: Assessing the EU’s Post-Arab Spring Approach to the Maghreb”) was organised in cooperation with the Deputy Head of the Maghreb Unit of the European Union’s External Action Service. Responsible for drafting the EU’s new approach to the Maghreb region, the senior official tasked the student teams with providing him with advice on how to implement the new strategy. For the duration of the course, students formed two separate think tanks and carried out independent, policyoriented research. The course was complemented by guest lectures from major European think tanks, EU officials as well experts on the Maghreb. Furthermore, the course instructor trained the senior seminar students in essential presentation skills (with the help of video analysis), research and analytical skills, time management and essential organisational skills. At the end of the course, both student groups presented their findings to the EU official and his colleagues at the EU offices, giving the students indispensable insight into the functioning of the EU as well as critical skills that will be valuable in their future career.

Undergraduate Certificate in European Peace and Security Studies The European Peace and Security Studies (EPSS) programme is comprised of 5 courses (30 ECTS in total) and provides in-depth and unique insights into the changing nature and fundamental challenges of contemporary security issues from a distinct Brussels perspective. By pooling the combined expertise and resources of five leading educational institutions in Brussels – Vesalius College, the Conflict Studies Department of the Belgian Royal Military Academy, the Institute of European Studies (IES), the Global Governance Institute, as well as the University of Kent’s Brussels campus – students are taught by prominent
The courses emphasise theoretical and practical analysis of the comprehensive, civil-military nature of contemporary conflict and crisis management from a NATO and EU perspective. Additionally, they focus on the history, institutional procedures, policies and interrelations of these two key organisations as well as on their interaction with a wide range of civilian and military partners. The programme also sheds light on the complex roots and causes of contemporary conflicts in Europe’s periphery and beyond. Master of Science in European Union Policy The Master of Science in European Union Policy (MSc EUP) is an advanced academic and highly policy-focused programme that provides a comprehensive understanding of all of the major aspects and processes of EU policymaking. Combining theory and research with practical implementation, it is valuable for students who are interested in a career in the European policy sphere, as well as those interested in pursuing more advanced studies in this field. The MSc EUP is a one-year, full-time programme, which leads to a Master of Science Degree accredited by the DutchFlemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO). It offers students a wide range of tools for analysing the political, economic and judicial aspects of the EU as a regional and global actor. Vesalius College fully utilises its location in Brussels, the Capital of Europe, by connecting students to Brussels’ political environment. Students can attend practiceoriented laboratories in relevant fields (such as Negotiation, Policy Writing and Lobbying) which are taught by policymakers and senior analysts from Brussels-based think tanks. Advanced Certificate in Global Risk Analysis & Crisis Management Jointly organised by Vesalius College, the Institute for European Studies (IES) and the Global Governance Institute (GGI), the Executive Course in Global Risk Analysis & Crisis Management provides participants with unique insights and the fundamental skills required for mastering the field of global risk analysis, early warning and the management of major man-made and natural disasters. Held during ten intensive weekend modules from September 2013 until June 2014, the Course involves a unique
mixture of intensive ‘hands-on’ training courses and comprehensive analytical and institutional lectures taught by a renowned faculty of senior officials from major international organisations (such as the European Union, NATO and the United Nations), NGOs and leading security scholars. Degree Recognition and Accreditation Vesalius College is registered with the Flemish government of Belgium as an institution for higher education. The Vesalius College Bachelor’s degree is equivalent to a fully-recognised Bachelor’s degree issued from a Flemish University. The 3 Bachelor programmes and one Master programme of Vesalius College are accredited by the Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatie Organisatie). This official organisation was established by international treaty between the Flemish and the Dutch governments with the aim of ensuring the quality of higher education in both the Netherlands and Flanders (Belgium). Vesalius College is a participant in the Bologna Process, the reform effort designed to standardise higher education throughout Europe. In accordance with the Bologna declaration, Vesalius College offers the three-year European Bachelor’s degree and one-year Master’s degree and calculates coursework in ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits.
Other Programmes Study Abroad Programme Outgoing Students Vesalius College offers its students a wide array of opportunities for studying in other nations and cultures. With an extensive list of international partner institutions, Vesalius provides students with the possibility of earning credit towards their Vesalius College degree in a variety of exciting and challenging environments that are rich in both academic and cultural diversity. Vesalius students may study abroad during the fall or spring semester or during the summer term. They are eligible to study abroad in the second semester of their second year or in the first semester of their third year at Vesalius College. Incoming students For more than twenty years, juniors, seniors, and occasionally sophomores from a wide range of colleges and universities in the USA and other countries have studied for all or part of a year at Vesalius College in Brussels, the Capital of Europe. As a result, Vesalius College has many years of experience in understanding the academic backgrounds and needs of international students studying abroad and in meeting those needs within the University’s curriculum and advisory system. At Vesalius College, study abroad students are fully integrated into the normal academic programme. Their workload corresponds as closely as possible with that of regular second- or third-year Vesalius students and they are integrated into Vesalius College’s social life and extra-curricular activities. I built friendships that may last a lifetime, and now actually miss the dorm atmosphere and lifestyle - not to mention the impeccable conditions. The Kansai Gaidai campus is also recently renovated, very modern and a pleasure to stroll through after class. Academically speaking, I was happy to see that most courses were actually related significantly to Japan or Asia in general, which complemented nicely the Western oriented classes I had been taking at Vesalius as an International Affairs student. The Washington Semester Program allows students to choose a subject area of interest and follow lecture series, conferences, and interesting class discussions on various topics. I chose to take the US Foreign Policy program, which covered US interests in almost all parts of the globe. As part of the program, I visited government institutions, attended conferences and lectures at various think tanks and museums, and listened to former ambassadors and CIA agents give insight into the world of political affairs. Academically, I benefited greatly from this experience and came away with a new outlook on the United States’ role in international relations. Vesalius Internship Programme Vesalius College offers students the opportunity to gain professional experience in Brussels, the Capital of Europe, while earning academic credit through the Vesalius Internship Programme (VIP). The VIP offers students a position with one of its many internship partners, which range from multinational corporations and media houses to international government organisations and NGOs. The VIP aims to benefit both students and internship partners alike. VIP partners provide interns with professional experience that goes beyond the scope of a traditional internship. Partners have acknowledged the value of Vesalius College students as a select group of young, dynamic and highly-educated individuals with vast international experience. As such, Vesalius interns are trusted with meaningful and important projects within the host organisation. Whether having full responsibility for a project, or working as a team member within a bigger enterprise, students have the opportunity to exercise their skills and to provide the host organisation with high-quality results. The internship counts as an academic course during the semester, and can be taken as a Major Elective. Degreeseeking students can earn 6 ECTS credits (3 US academic credits) for the “single” internship option. Study abroad students may also opt to extend the internship in order to work more hours per week. This “double” internship option is worth 12 ECTS credits (6 US credits). What do our students say about their internship? I feel lucky! It is quite unusual for an American to find an internship at the European Parliament, but thanks to Vesalius College, I have had the opportunity to intern for a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). I currently work for Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo Y Marfil, a Spanish MEP from Madrid. My work differs from day-to-day depending on which committee meetings are being held. The majority of my work consists of doing research on the current economic crisis and correcting legislation and proposals for European economic stability mechanisms – most of which have been translated from Spanish to English. However, my work does not confine me to my office. I get to sit in on anything from committee meetings to plenary sessions. My internship has provided me with a great opportunity to learn about European politics and I feel fortunate to have been given the chance to experience this. As an International Affairs major with a focus on Europe, I wanted to participate in a study abroad programme that would deepen my understanding of the EU and its systems. I came to Brussels and started classes at Vesalius College. After learning about ECRAAL, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity that an internship with ECRAAL would provide. I knew that this experience would be a hands-on approach to learning in an international environment, but I have been able to gain so much more from this internship. I had never really thought about doing an internship, but when I saw the Time Warner profile in the Vesalius Internship Catalogue, I changed my mind. Time Warner is one of the world’s biggest media conglomerates, owning among others HBO, Time Magazine and Warner Brothers – and being an intern there sounded like so much fun. After applying I was called in for an interview, and a couple of days later I received an offer from them. Now I have been working there for a month, three times a week, and I love it. Through this internship, I have been given a chance to get first-hand experience of the media and entertainment business, and I learn something new every day. I also get to use my knowledge of Communications in real-life situations, which inspires me to pay extra attention in class. I am very happy to be an intern at Time Warner. Lasting just six weeks, the Vesalius Summer Programme gives students a targeted academic programme and the opportunity to experience and explore the best of European culture and travel. Requirements and Applications Degree-seeking students at Vesalius College need to complete a registration form for the Summer Programme. New students have gained a secondary school diploma and will have a good command of the English language. Admission is decided on a case-by-case basis. A student visa is not required to attend our Summer Programme. In most cases, a tourist visa is sufficient for attendance. However, a student must hold a valid identity card or passport.

Student Services Vesalius College offers students the best of both worlds: the personal attention and community environment of a small college and access to the resources of major universities. The College also shares academic events, guest lectures and participates in faculty exchanges with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the Université libre de Bruxelles, the University of Kent at Brussels and Boston University.
Research and Library Resources Students at Vesalius have access to extensive resources for research at three major libraries: the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Université libre de Bruxelles and The Royal Library, Belgium’s national library. Together, they provide students with access to over five million books. In addition, students have access to a wide variety of online resources including thousands of journals and newspapers, library catalogues and databases.

Computer Resources Computer and internet access is an essential part of student life. The Vesalius College computer lab features PCs and Apple computers as well as facilities for students with laptops to connect to the College’s computer network. Students also have access to the extensive computer resources at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, including the free campus-wide wireless network.
Career Counselling To assist students with life after college, Vesalius College offers students in their final year the opportunity to attend career seminars and individual coaching sessions. This free service aims to help graduates gain a competitive advantage on the job market after graduation. This is achieved by helping students determine their career objectives in addition to acquiring the skill sets necessary to achieve their professional goals. The workshops range from CV and cover letter writing to information on networking and how to apply for various internship programs offered in Brussels.

Psychological Counselling Moving to a new country, living alone, and experiencing exam pressure are just a few of the major changes that students may experience in college. Vesalius offers free psychological counselling to students who would like to speak to a professional about missing home, exam pressure, or other challenges they might face.

Every day, the VUB campus cafeteria serves a wide selection of warm and cold dishes, snacks, sandwiches and drinks - all at student-friendly prices.
The medical care centre at the VUB campus provides medical assistance to students and staff. Medical assistance includes consultation in case of illness, accidents, small medical interventions, vaccinations, preventive care, etc.
Students pay a fixed price depending on the dish chosen. The set menus include soup, a main course and a dessert. The Cafeteria serves breakfast, sandwiches and drinks. Students can also find two trendy snack bars on campus: ‘t Complex and Opinio.
Student Life Vesalius College is part of a broader student community in Brussels that consists of four other universities: the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the Université Libre Bruxelles, the University of Kent, and Boston University. Together, they support a vibrant student lifestyle. Easily accessible by bus, train, tram, or metro, the area has everything to meet students’ needs including affordable housing, two on-campus cafeterias, libraries, banks, shops, markets, restaurants, bars, live entertainment venues, organised athletic activities, and state-of-the-art sports facilities.
Vesalius Student Government The Vesalius Student Government (VSG) is an elected student body that acts as the main liaison between students and the academic administration of Vesalius College. The VSG appoints representatives to the Academic Council, which is the academic governance of the College, and regularly meets with the Dean on matters which affect students at the College. The VSG also holds a very important social role: it organises welcome activities for new students, sports activities, seasonal parties, drama evenings and other social activities throughout the year. The members act as student ambassadors at events such as orientation, Open Days and recruitment

Sports and Outdoor Activities Vesalius students have full access to the athletics facilities of the VUB. The sports facilities include two large multipurpose sports halls (for indoor soccer, basketball, badminton, tennis, etc.), one martial arts hall, three squash courts, a swimming pool and one climbing wall. All facilities are indoors and are thus always available regardless of the weather conditions. Students also have access to a state-ofthe-art fitness complex. This sports centre consists of a 1,500 m² fitness and cardio area, a spinning studio, two large changing rooms, a relaxation area, a solarium and a dance/aerobics studio. Next to its indoor infrastructure, the VUB Sports Department also has outdoor sports fields, including one synthetic soccer field and a brand new athletics track and rugby pitch. A membership fee and/or usage fee (discounted for students) is applied. With numerous spacious parks and a vast forest at the doorstep of the city, students also have many opportunities for biking,
running, rollerblading, horseback riding, taking a scenic stroll, or simply for relaxing.
Housing Moving to a new city can be both stressful and confusing. To help students get settled in Brussels and ready to begin classes, the College provides them with links to help find suitable off-campus housing. Vesalius College does not have on-campus housing, and students are responsible for making their own housing arrangements. But with the large number of universities and higher education institutions in Brussels, student rooms are widely available. Study abroad students who join Vesalius College for one semester have the opportunity to stay with a French or Dutch-speaking host family. This type of accommodation provides the student with a unique experience that allows for insight into the everyday life of Belgian families, Belgian culture, and social norms.

Life in Brussels The liberal arts philosophy of Vesalius’ academic programme is reflected in the life of its students. The College encourages students to work hard to reach their academic potential, but also to live a full life away from books and classes. Brussels has a tremendous amount to offer those interested in exploring the Capital of Europe, and students quickly discover the city to be vibrant and cosmopolitan with a warm, friendly charm. 30% of the Brussels population is comprised of foreign nationals, so the city has something to offer for every taste and culture in the areas of music, dancing, cuisine, art, associations and much more. The city is also home to an excellent music scene, both in clubs and at numerous festivals where almost any genre of music can be found - from local musicians to the biggest touring bands. Those interested in dancing will find many venues for practicing their art, as well as classes to learn a variety of dances including the salsa, quickstep, tango, swing and all other classic and contemporary styles. Brussels has many museums and art galleries, ranging from classical to modern art. The city also houses a national symphony, opera and theatre. In addition, Brussels has a rich variety of architecture including Baroque buildings from the 1600s, classic Flemish, art deco, art nouveau, and the modern architecture of the European Union buildings.

Beyond Brussels Going to school in Brussels affords students the unique opportunity for some great (as well as quick and inexpensive) travels and getaways. Belgium’s inter-city trains provide quick access to the coast of Flanders, Medieval Bruges, Antwerp (“The diamond capital of the world”), and the wooded hills of the Ardennes. Looking
beyond Belgium, Brussels is the ideal base from which to visit the rest of Europe. Paris is a short 90 minutes by fast train and London, Cologne and Amsterdam are just two and a half hours away. In addition, most major European cities are two hours or less away by plane.

As an alumna, I can tell you wholeheartedly that VeCo supports its students and invests in their performance. VeCo made me discover my own talents and gave me the opportunity to grow and develop to prepare for my future. The professors who taught me were professional and true specialists in their field. I remember having a Greek professor who used to be a journalist, an American professor who taught us literature and American history and a Belgian professor who taught us economics and statistics. Because the classes are taught in small groups, every student counts and you are not just a number. During my studies I got the opportunity to do an internship at TV Brussels, where I learned about the practical side of journalism and developed my interview skills. After graduating from VeCo, I pursued a Master’s degree in Business Administration and I now work in the Public Diplomacy Division (in the Press and Media office) at NATO where I work with people from all walks of life. “It’s kind of like VeCo but on a larger scale and working on real matters”. Vesalius College offers interactive learning in small groups, which is one of the greatest advantages of the college. The teachers are always available for questions and take interest in students’ progression. What I liked most about my time as a Business student at VeCo was the opportunity to apply the theory I learnt through presentations and weekly assignments, as well as the intercultural environment, with students from all different nationalities, which facilitates a greater understanding of different cultures. Now working for BAHR, one of Norway’s leading commercial law firms, I have the chance to apply not only the academic skills, but also the language skills as a translator of legal documents. Vesalius College was my dream college, I just had never heard of it while living in the States. Perhaps fate led me here, but I couldn’t be happier. My friends came from all over the world, my professors were challenging, helpful and inspiring, and my future lies ahead. Deadlines Vesalius College processes applications on a rolling basis. Admissions decisions are usually made within three weeks after the complete application is received. Applications will be considered as long as places remain in the class to which they are applying for admission. However, students who wish to be considered for the Academic Excellence Scholarship (see page 28) will have to submit their college application before 15 April.

Admissions Entrance requirements Vesalius College seeks students who are able to meet the challenges of its academic programme and who are willing to participate fully in the intellectual and social life of the College in a spirit of openness and tolerance. Admission to the College is selective. We endeavour to accept students whose records indicate that they possess the qualities needed to achieve academic success in the degree programme of their choice. Applicants for admission must have graduated from a secondary school prior to beginning their studies at Vesalius College. Admission decisions take into account the candidate’s secondary school performance, examination results and English language competence, as well as demonstrated personal qualities and character.
• A completed application form; • Official academic credentials and transcripts (showing courses and grades) from all secondary schools and universities attended, including public examination results and official results of any national or regional examination (usually taken in the candidate’s country of residence); • Two letters of recommendation (from persons familiar with the candidate’s academic work, for example, teachers, professors, guidance counsellors, or school directors); • A non-refundable application fee of Eur. 50.00; • Proof of identity in the form of a photocopy of either a passport or a national identity card; • Results of an English proficiency examination may be required for some applicants. The College requires the TOEFL or IELTS test; • Official scores of the SAT test or the ACT test may be required. Candidates should contact the Admissions Office to determine whether they must take one of these examinations. Note: Applicants who take the SAT or TOEFL test must ask the testing agency to send score reports directly to Vesalius College, using the College code: 3574.

Transcripts must be sent in an official envelope of the institution that is sealed and then signed across the back flap by the sending official. Photocopies of original documents are not accepted as official transcripts. Vesalius College accepts credentials in English, Dutch, French, and German. For all other languages, official translations by a certified translator (whose signature is authenticated) are required and are accepted only when accompanied by the document in its original language.
Transfer Admission Vesalius College may award transfer credits on a limited basis for courses taken at the university level in other accredited institutions. The minimum requirements for grades depend upon the school where the credit was earned and the student’s intended major within Vesalius College. All transfer credits will be awarded at the discretion of the Admissions Committee. For more information, please contact the admission office.
Visa Information Students who are not EU citizens must obtain a student visa in order to live in Belgium and attend the College. The time it takes to obtain a student visa may vary from one to several months depending on a variety of factors including the student’s age and country of origin.

Vesalius Academic Excellence Scholarship Fund
Academic Calendar
Vesalius College recently launched the Academic Excellence Scholarship Fund to reward students who have outstanding academic records in secondary school and whose extra-curricular achievements show evidence of leadership in today’s global society. Other factors include letters of recommendation from their secondary school and (in certain cases) standardised test scores.

The College’s merit-based financial assistance can provide up to a 50 % reduction in tuition per semester for students who have been accepted into a Bachelor programme as a full-time, firstyear student enrolling in the fall semester. These scholarships will be renewed if the student maintains superior academic performance during each semester of their 3-year Bachelor programme. The scholarship will be directly applied to the student’s tuition fees. Note that students accepted into a Bachelor programme at Vesalius College automatically apply for the Academic Excellence Scholarship. They do not have to submit a separate application form for the scholarship.
