Istria Istria
U
nique and irresistible Istrian peninsula, around which Adriatic sea carved itself deep into the continent, washing its coast with thousands of lagoons and islets, is ready to tell the chance traveller its millennium long history. Istria is spread over 2820 km2, with range of diversities on offer; from its inland with wonderful little towns seeming to have sprung from the top of the hills, fertile fields, circled by mountain ranges of Ćićarija and Učka, to the coast splashed by the clear sea. Mild Mediterranean climate gives Istria its indisputable reputation of ecological and healthy tourist destination. Istrian peninsula has managed to preserve its ancient natural values. Preserving this inherited natural wealth is an unwritten law even for the present generation. Imagine not protecting sun-bathed virgin knolls, highlighted by true Mediterranean vegetation, woods connecting with sea… Istrian men have long used and kept riches which nature provided Istria with in abundance. This effort created today’s recognized quality of olive oil, grape vine giving high quality wines and healthy food emerging from earth’s still fresh bosom.
Gastronomy After arriving to local restaurants, ask for home dishes and you will not regret it. Istrian cuisine is healthy and diverse. It is influenced by Italian, Germanic and Slavic ethnos, but at the same time it reflects Mediterranean climate. The dishes are characterized by Istria’s long tradition of cultivation and sheep farming. The influence from Trieste and Venice on the local cuisine can be best tasted in coastal restaurants where shrimps, crabs, shells and mollusces are served in delicate combinations with pasta and rice. The quality fish is best grilled or baked with potatoes in the oven. If you go to a fish restaurant you should start your meal with a fish soup. As a starter black risotto made of cuttle-fish or crabs are recommended. Some of many shell sorts allá buzara or served with pastry are good choice as well, with pinnacle definitely being lobster with noodles. Which fish you choose is a matter of taste, but you will surely not regret if you choose fish called leaf, red fish, sea-bass or gilt-poll. If you find yourself in the middle of fishermen’s festivity, do not say no to grilled anchovies – this simple, healthy and cheap dish can please you in many ways.
4
Culinary experts consider the spoon to be a mistress of cooking, and maneštra is renowned as the queen of rural Istrian cuisine. You can enjoy home noodles with goulash in almost every restaurant. Fuži, makaruni or noodles are served with žgvaceta with deer, veal or chicken goulash – they are delicious in all combinations.
Istria
The peak of Istrian cuisine is truffle from Motovun woods. This aromatic aphrodisiac is added to many delicacies, but is mostly served with pasta or with eggs. Do not miss out on tasting famous Istrian ham, sausages, bacon and ombolo (traditional pork cutlet). If you find yourself in Istria during spring you will probably be attracted to wild asparagus with eggs or špaleta đira–volta, usually served for Easter. Alongside good dishes you can also enjoy a good glass of wine. You should definitely taste quality wines from Istrian wine-cellars. Fish dishes are best accompanied by Malvasia, Pinot and Chardonnay, and meat dishes by Terrano and Merlot. Istrian Moscato has exceptional sweet aroma. Finally, for your sweet tooth, taste the figs, ideal summer fruit, or the grapes which are ripe in the second half of August. Bon Appetite!

Settlements Surrounding Our Tourist Destinations
Fažana Fažana, 8 km north of Pula, is in proximity of national park Brijuni. In the ancient times, Roman patricians built their villas and cottages in Fažana and surrounding areas, olives and grapes were processed, and Fažana’s ancient name Vasianum is derived from the local amphora factory. Nowadays high quality olive-oil, which is definitely worth trying, is made in Fažana and its surroundings.
One of the most beautiful Istrian towns is situated on peninsula’s western coast. Here you will see historical monuments from Illiric, Roman and Venetian times. Visit the Church of St. Eufemia with unforgettable view on the whole town from the bell tower. Take a tour from Rovinj and visit the Palud swamp or Romuald’s Cave on the southern side of Lim channel and nearby quarry “Cave di Monfiorenzo” which is a geological monument. Spend unforgettable and romantic moments in a typical Istrian town that will forever stay in your heart as a wonderful memory.
Later on, Fažana developed as a typical fishermen’s settlement and since 1950s when the Brijuni islands became residence to former Yugoslavian president Tito, Fažana got the function as the Brijuni Gates. Fažana is decorated not only by its rich past with its remains visible even today but by its attractive location as well.

from 14th to 19th century, special attention is drawn by Vodnjan mummies (corpi santi). It is thought that the body of St. Nicolosa, a Benedictine nun who died in 1512, is the best preserved mummy in Europe. Bioenergetics confirms that the body of St. Nicolosa radiates bio-energy within range of 32 metres. Allegedly there have been 50 miraculous healings in her proximity. Still, there are no answers to the question – how have bodies that were not embalmed managed to stay preserved to the present moment (the oldest one, dates from the end of 12th century). Come and make sure by yourself of these mystical events and legends kept secret by the town of Vodnjan.
Umag is situated on the north-western coast of Istrian peninsula, in a natural port, on crossroad of important traffic routes. It has developed into a famous tourist and sports destination; here you have as much as 64 tennis courts at your disposal, beaches equipped with exciting water facilities, neat promenades along the coast, bicycle routes... which makes Umag the perfect place for those who love active rest and seek diverse tourist offers and respect long catering tradition. Do not miss out on a visit to the old town centre with high walls and Bishop’s palace that serves as an evidence of town’s turbulent and interesting history. 7
