"We live in chaos, architecture is a way to keep us in order."
What I desire to explore is the relationship between "Space and Form" , "Route and Purpose". Architecture begins where engineering ends and embodies its value only when it is used by people. We architects play a role as rule makers to satisfy people's needs within the construction. However, we still need architecture to speak for itself, to lead people to experience it, to leave an emotional impact on people and the city. My goal is to find the proper way in the design to establish a system of routes behind the space, to establish an order that can be understood differently but can be sustained for long.
If architecture is a drama, we are both directors and actors.

REINVENTING CHINATOWN Fall 2021, GSD Option Studio Independent Work Instructor: David Fixler Site: Boston Chinatown, U.S. Nominated Work (High Pass)
The design proposal is used to call for more attention to courtyards and alleyways which are the important urban legacies in Boston Chinatown. Take Shikumen as the reference, the new designed project is designed to be a good neighbor to both row houses and mid-rise, and make something nice to the urban fabric.
REPETITIVE ELEMENTS IN CHINATOWN Because of its central location, the design should show more respect to the existing elements and make it a good new combination. Intense and repetitive elements are the architectural values of Chinatown.

DISAPPEARING COURTYARDS&ALLEYWAYS the undefined boundary, Discontinuous public space, overly mixed situation of age, use and typology make the whole Chinatown community very fragile. The original courtyard space is now occupied by private add-ons which are used for storage and kitchen to support front door commercials. And unlike Lilong space in Shanghai, alleyway in Chinatown is no more than an undesirable space with garbage or fire escape.

SITE & MATERIALS
MATERIALS APPLIED Glass Concrete White Brick
Although the material of building surrounded is dominated by red bricks, you can still see those new materials overlayed with it, green metal and glass, red paint, but the tone of whole site is still very dark. so I want to create something lighter and brighter.
MAIN DESIGN CONCEPT
Typical Shikumen Prototype The main concept is no matter how many densities you would add to a site, keep the ground floor open for the alleyway and courtyard, and make those space affective enough to build a connection between the new development and old neighbors. And I am adding stairs along with the wall of alleyway, it’s also a typical arrangements of lilong to have the staircase right next to lilong.
6
STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Create Void
Exsiting Additions Step 01 Adaptive Reuse of Additions Liberate the space occupied by the bad-quality additions
New Alleyway Step 02 Establish Cross-connection Open a way on the ground floor of the adjacent mid-rise building and keep an alleyway distance
3 Story Massing

Step 03 Continue the Proportion of Row Houses Conscious preservation of courtyard space in the middle
Step 04 Add on Housing Massing Form the middle shared space with bridging strategy and reinfored the courtyard space
Residents
Tourists Continuous Route Step 05 Enhance Alleyway Space with Hints Make the use of market and community spaces interact in the courtyard
Step 06 Create Dynamic Routes Create an upward flow loop on the bottom three levels combined with the alleyways
7
GOUND FLOOR PLAN The goundfloor market space is framed by alleyway and courtyard, from the plan you could see how it maintain uniformity of scale along the street with the idea of crevice, so it can be read as 8 row house scale when you walk along the street.

EXPLOSIVE SECTION PERSCTIVE Market combined with courtyard forms a multi-level open system for community interaction, The north-south connections are like capillaries linking people to the market.
9
FIFTH FLOOR PLAN The typical residential floor contains nine units of various sizes, and it is designed primarily for young residents with small families, with the two housing sections connected by a shared community space with a view of the courtyard.
ELEVENTH FLOOR PLAN On the top floor, there is a sky bar facing the courtyard slit, which can be the main activity place of the apartment at night and has a multi-angle view with the sloping roof.
10
SCENE OF ALLEYWAY MARKET Its transparency and openness as a transitional space between old and new buildings can be a paradigm for design connections in infill sites
SCENES OF COURTYARD SPACE Because the courtyard is the intersection of market and community functions, it can serve as an extension of both
11
LIGHT UP THE BLOCK The design of this project is containing typical elements of Chinatown, like commercial bump-out, reinforced arch entrance, pitched roof which actually following the existing row houses, I hope these elements could become the iconic, highlight spaces of this project to function as public use and light up the whole block.
12
EAST-WEST SECTION I try to Maintain the continuity of proportion and commercial atmosphere along the street, but build a vibrant courtyard space inside, also use platform to create multi-level interaction. The pitched roof shows respect for the original row houses and light up the courtyard at night.

West Entrance

REINFORCED ENTRANCE DESIGN The element of the arch is used as a cue for the four entrances to the block, forming an transitional space with the adjacent original buildings and leading people through the new alleyway towards the central courtyard.

The original building here is an old community center which is insipid and inflexible. Reorganizing the building to make it a natural activity reactor where people could experience "escape","collision" and "suspension" .Following the route ,people can return back to their original serene condition:lying in the cradle and sleep.

The original architectural form of the market is due to the need of railway transportation. While the construction of new Shinkansen bring challenge to the market, I am thinking about a new way to renovate the market and make it has better connection with the outside. Thus, the culture of this market could be preserved and it may become an important node on the Olympic road as well.

For small scale museum like that, its gallery room and archive always need be enclosed spaces with walls. But workshop is the transparent space welcome natural lights. So the idea kis to have the workshop space to be the transparent volume that weaving around, but still keep the museum as the continuous walled space.

Considering residents in big cities of China live in a concrete jungle and bear heavy work stress, we design a building in urban village for citizens to have a taste of agriculture lifestyle with various activities. The folded plate is inspired by typography and mountain and eventually combined with the environment. It forms a natural route oriented to the mountain.

Yang's Village which is left out in the process of rapid urbanization is located in the central part of the city. The mountain around it could act as the connection between the National Scenic Area-Xixi Wetland and the famous tour attraction-West Lake. In spite of the good location, residents here make little use of their natural resources to attract tourists. Thus, this village became the missing point in the urban tourism route planning. The site we choose is between the major tea mountain in the village and the river, thus we could make full use of these natural resources to develop leisure agriculture as the new industry to combine the village with tourism.

Indoor Semi-Outdoor Outdoor
AGGREGATION ADAPTED TO MOUNTAIN The combination on section offers new spatial qualities both interior and exterior. The diversity of singular connection typology are extracted from the mountain shape and being aggregated as new entity that reflects certain programs that meet the demands from both tourists and the locals. Considerations on how the architecture could combine with nature are represented on playing with its transition from outdoors to indoors.
Set the continuous folded plate from river side to the mountain, the view is limited only in two directions.
34
Rotate the lowest part and the top part of the building to parallel the scenery of river side and the mountain accordingly.
Tilt the main enclosure wall of each combination to make the building more lithe.

The Taishan region has a lengthy and robust history of cultural exchange, or reciprocity, that can be seen both in it’s architectural character and in it’s industrial and economic heritage.By placing the winery and pottery center in the relative middle of the site, we create a strong node to connect and draw people from Tingjianxu to Haikobu and vice versa.

Soil For Porcelain Soil For Rice
RICE AND PORCELAIN SUPPLY AND PRODUCTION CHAIN While the qualities of the built environment, such as the number of diaolou that still stand today, is quite evident, what has been lost is a key piece of Taishan’s economy - namely its secondary industry of porcelain and clay production. Beginning with trade to SE Asia, and quickly moving to the United Kingdom, Portugal, the Middle East, and even the United States, Taishan’s ceramics business was a conduit through which notions of culture, heritage, and beauty were exchanged. Our project seeks to rebuild that piece of Taishan’s economy and to use it as a means of revitalization for the town of Duanfen. This will be done through a variety of different means, most notably a new winery and pottery-making center situated in the heart of Duanfen. See from the regional plan, we can easily get rice and porcelain soil supply just near our site. And the products of rice wine and porcelain could either sell-in-place or delivered to Taicheng where already has the direct sale stores. And they can also be exported by planes or ships nationally and internationally.

This action would not only stimulate the agricultural development but also provide more job opportunities for villagers who can offer services like farm-to-table, homestay and also work for the new cultural center. And in the long run, companies from outside would also be attracted to the site to make investment and help to expand this new industry.

The living habitats for people have been pushing away from water through the land-filling process. We tried to recall its identity by remaining its landscape footprints and adapted different approaches to cope with natural risks. A hospitable neighborhood could be built here to connect the South Boston community and complete the Emerald Necklace.
