3 Creatively Effective Ways to Administer Medications to Your Dog
If you think giving children their medicine is hard, you must have never tried to administer dog medications to a household pet. Dogs are just as smart as children, if not smarter, and much cleverer. That, in addition to their keen instincts and strong sense of smell makes it feel virtually impossible to feed dog medications to your canine. However, with a little outof-the-box thinking, you can get one over on your pesky pooch, and give them the medication that they need.
Place on Paws This trick works easily with liquid or powdered dog medications. Simply mix the medication with dog-safe food like peanut butter or mashed bananas and place it on their paw. Just like messy faces drive moms crazy, messy paws make dogs go insane. They will instinctively lick it off their paw, thus consuming the medication in the process.
Bait and Switch If you try to give your dog their medication the same time every day without any effort, your dog will catch on to you rather quickly. They’ll notice you take out the dog medication box, place it on the counter, and then turn around and try to feed it to them. Not happening. Instead, pre-make treats that consist of the medication insight meatballs or peanut butter balls, mark them for the dog, and place them in the fridge. That way, your little furry friend will just think they have special treats for being a really good boy.
Crowd Mentality Dogs are naturally competitive. If you have other dogs in your home, use that to your advantage. You can use the same dog medication-laden treats from the previous example or others. Place the treat with dog medications in one hand and the regular treats in your other hand. Feed your other dogs the regular treats and the dog who needs the medication the treat from the other hand. The competitive nature of the dogs won’t allow them to think twice about the treat. Instead they’ll scarf it down without a care in the world.
