Glimpses (2006, rev. 2016) for Prepared Piano by Vivian Fung Program Note In Three Movements – Duration 11 minutes Each movement may be performed separately. Premiere by Jenny Lin at the Miami ISCM Festival, April 2006 Kotekan Snow Chant Glimpses is a set of three pieces that each feature a different aspect of prepared piano. The name of the first piece, Kotekan, is an Indonesian term that describes the interlocking rhythms used in traditional works for gamelan orchestra. This piece uses fast interlocking rhythms coupled with different colors of prepared strings to bring out the percussive nature of the piano. The second piece, Snow, heavily relies on the colors of the upper ranges of the piano to depict light and sweeping motions. In the third piece, Chant, the pianist plays inside the piano and pulls on rosined butcher twine to simulate a long deep drone that permeates through the piece. Glimpses is written for pianist Jenny Lin.
List of Materials I. Kotekan 4 popsicle wooden sticks Scotch tape 5 small metal binder clips 2 plastic mini hair clips 1 metal bar or ruler to cover length of space between notes specified (approx. 10cm or 4 inches) As needed – Weights to hold down metal bars to establish contact with piano strings
II. Snow 6 plastic clothes pins 7 small metal binder clips metal bar(s) or ruler(s) to cover length of space between notes specified (approx. 35cm or 14 inches) As needed – Weights to hold down metal bars to establish contact with piano strings 11”X17” paper Weight(s) to hold down paper – weights need to be heavy enough to hold down paper but not too heavy as to lose all sound from string
III. Chant butcher’s twine rosin (double bass preferred) metal bar(s) or ruler(s) to cover length of space between notes specified (approx. 25cm or 10 in.) As needed – Weights to hold down metal bars to establish contact with piano strings small porcelain cup (small sake cup or equivalent) rubber wedge or eraser head (to hold sost. pedal for the lowest E throughout piece) rubber wedge or guitar pick (for sections that require plucking or strumming strings inside piano)
