Welcome

to Brunswick Island & The Cape Fear Coast IF YOU WERE TO PAINT A PICTURE OF PARADISE, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE? White sandy beaches, blue-green waters extending to the horizon, picture-perfect coastal villages, untamed beach grass swaying in the breeze? Welcome to the Brunswick Islands and Cape Fear Coast—by all definitions, an incomparable piece of paradise. Scenic and serene, yet full of activity, this coastal region is known as one of the best places in the country to visit and live. Stretching from Wilmington’s bustling downtown with its plethora of dining, retail and sightseeing activities, winding all the way down through the languid Brunswick Isles to quaint Little River, South Carolina, your dream vacation is just waiting to be discovered.

With more than 45 miles of pristine beach, some visitors never leave their perfect place in the sand. Our white sandy beaches are ideal for sunning, surfing, shelling, swimming or just playing around. From quiet, secluded beaches to bustling boardwalks, you can find the perfect place to spread out your towel and let all your worries melt away. But of course, the fun doesn’t stop once you step away from the beach. There are a number of other activities to keep the whole family entertained. welcome to the

Golf Coast

Lush Fairways, Warm Climate And Carolina Charm Make This Region Top-Notch For Golfers

With almost 500 golf courses across the state, North Carolina is one of the most popular destinations for golfers on the East Coast. This coastal region is one of the state’s most dense areas, with nearly 40 courses in the Cape Fear Coast and Brunswick Islands alone and dozens more within a short drive. In fact, the amount of top-quality courses has earned the Brunswick Islands the moniker “Golf Coast.” World-class golfers like Arnold Palmer, Fred Couples and Jon Daly have taken advantage of the diverse topography, sandy soil and seaside terrain, molding stunning, expansive fairways into the already beautiful landscape. Courses here on Golf Coast blend seamlessly with nature, many with water views of the

ocean, inlets or sounds, some looking right over the Atlantic Ocean or Intracoastal Waterway. Inland courses are set amid towering pines, pristine forests and the occasional heron or deer. This coastal region has a course to suit you, from seasoned pros to first-timers! While the landscape of the courses is relaxing, there are definitely some challenging holes throughout the Brunswick Islands—challenging enough that golfers keep coming back again and again to lower their handicap. Of course, most courses were designed with both the professional and beginner in mind, so even a first-time golfer can enjoy a day out on the links at nearly all of the nearby courses. Green fees are in line with what you’d expect to pay, and you might be pleasantly surprised at rates offered by most courses. Before you head

out to the links, contact the course to arrange a tee time. Some local courses also have online booking options. Either way, keep in mind that it’s best to book ahead. Most golf courses offer lessons for every level of golfer. Whether you need to tweak your swing or get a full introduction to this game of precision, onsite pros are there to help. Learn the basics from one of the expert instructors, or work on advanced techniques with a pro. Some golf courses have the additional benefit of onsite driving ranges and practice greens, as well as all the necessary amenities, such as a pro shop, rentals, beverage and snack carts and a clubhouse bar and restaurant. Some of the best courses are also resorts, with full accommodations for the ultimate golfing getaway. With sub-tropical weather, golfers are lured here year-round. But perhaps the best time to hit the links is the spring and fall, when the temperatures cool and the beach crowds return home. No matter what time of year, you’re bound to experience some of the best golf of your life in the friendly atmosphere that defines the North Carolina coast. c

Throughout Wilmington’s historic district, you’ll find a wide range of stores, most of them locally owned with a unique selection of merchandise from candles and jewelry to locally crafted wares. The Cotton Exchange at the north end of the riverfront features a variety of shops in a historic cotton building, once the site of the largest cotton-export company in the world. Learn about the history of the cotton industry, and then stroll around the multi-level shopping center and its many diverse stores. They sell everything from Christmas decorations and books to jewelry and homemade fudge. On the other end of the Riverfront is Chandler’s Wharf, a retail and dining complex with cobblestone streets, plank walkways and a maritime atmosphere. There you will find a mix of dockside restaurants and quaint stores. Another interesting diversion with a many goods is the Old Wilmington City Market, a historic building on the waterfront between Front and Water streets. Art galleries, jewelers, clothing boutiques and craft shops take up the arcade-style building, which once served as a vegetable market. Be sure to visit the Southeast’s largest upscale home furnishing consignment store conviently located right off of Market Street. One particularly delightful place to shop is Lumina Station, a shopping area inspired by the Lumina pavilion, once a Wrightsville Beach hotspot. Lumina Station features a dozen unique shops, restaurants and cafes and a delightfully upscale yet relaxed

On Oak Island, Holden Beach, Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach, shoppers will find stores geared to beach lovers and art lovers plus other specialty stores such as swimsuit boutiques, nautical gift stores and bookstores. Most of the stores on Pleasure Island have a central theme—having fun at the beach. You’ll come across plenty of beach stores

antiques Antique stores abound here, making this area quite a popular place for finding vintage treasures and retro souvenirs. Antique enthusiasts will find much to smile about across Southport, as there are plenty of quaint antique stores, as well as an antique mall with more than 30 dealers. Parking is free on all city streets, but the town is so pleasant and small, you’ll definitely want to walk shop to shop. Pleasure Island also has a tremendous antiques scene. Shopkeepers often make the experience of browsing just as fun as the thrill of a good find with their friendly attitudes and pleasant demeanor. However, when you do find that item you’ve been looking for or perhaps didn’t realize you needed, you’ll be able to treasure it forever and keep it as a reminder of your time on North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands. c

Alligator Spotting in Brunswick Islands and the Cape Fear Coast

A

lthough it may be news to some, alligators are spotted on the Brunswick Islands and Cape Fear Coast quite frequently and play a significant role in North Carolina’s ecosystem. So much so that the alligator, the American Alligator in particular, has become a local icon for residents and regular year-round visitors alike. You may spot one from a distance while kayaking in the marshes or witness a congregation of alligators behind glass at a local aquarium. These large reptiles are some of the world’s most unique and beautiful creatures. Alligators prefer freshwater habitats, slow-moving rivers and often times settle in swamps, marshes and lakes. Because they do not have salt glands, they can only tolerate salt water for a short amount of time. Using their tails, alligators dig burrows in the mud for nesting and keeping warm, but once an alligator abandons the burrow, the hole fills with freshwater and then other species use it for breeding and drinking. This is why alligators are known as the “keystone” species of the Southeast. If they did not grace in our native ecosystem, it would negatively impact a countless amount of species. A great way to spot an alligator while vacationing on the Brunswick Islands or Cape Fear Coast take a guided kayak tour through the marshes. The marshes offer beautiful scenic views and give you the chance to witness wildlife in a fun adventurous way. Guided tours are offered on Bald Head Island, located on the east side of Cape Fear River, through the Bald Head Island Conservancy and Sail Shop for individuals, families and groups of all ages and skill levels. Depart from Southport’s Deep Point Marina for a quick 20 minute ferry ride to the island to begin your voyage. Once on the water, keep an eye out for the American Alligator who may be slowly but surely swimming nearby. Alligators have also been spotted on the Cape Fear Coast on Oak Island, Holden Beach and Carolina Beach. Some alligators even made their way to the marshes on local golf courses. When an alligator is spotted in public areas, it is treated as any other wildlife species is treated. The alligator is safely taken by professional wildlife officers and released back into its natural habitat. If you are interested in witnessing an alligator but do not feel comfortable spotting one on a guided tour or kayak adventure, there are other ways to observe this fascinating creature in a safe enclosure. Brunswick Islands and the Cape Fear Coast are home to several aquariums and wildlife facilities where you can observe alligators in a safe and protected environment. The staff members take great care for the alligators on a daily basis and look forward to sharing their knowledge and love for these unique reptiles to all those who visit. Alligators are a rare species, so be sure to take advantage of the tours, special destinations and wildlife attractions at the Brunswick Islands and Cape Fear Coast! c

Welcome to CAPE FEAR COAST

CAST YOUR WORRIES AWAY ON THE COAST With roughly 20 miles of sand and surf, the white sandy beaches of the Cape Fear Coast are an unparalleled piece of paradise. This coastal region is known as one of the best places in the country to visit and live, possessing a mix of scenic landscapes, serene beaches and picture-perfect coastal villages. Stretching from the northern-most point of Wrightsville Beach and traveling down the coast of the Atlantic Ocean through Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, your dream vacation awaits.

There’s plenty to do for the whole family.

The Cape Fear Coast is also home to a vast amount of history and unique waterfront culture, which can be readily experienced by a simple stroll through the quaint tree-lined streets of Wilmington, just northwest of the Cape Fear Coast. The thriving port and docks have made themselves into a vibrant waterfront village, and old homes and buildings tell the stories of this historic seaport. From nearby Civil War battlefields to a restored WWII Battleship, there is plenty to see and do for all ages. With so many activities on and off the beach, the Cape Fear Coast is nothing short of paradise.

Wrightsville Beach

The Cape Fear Coast’s sandy beaches are ideal for sunning, surfing, shelling, swimming or just playing around. Wrightsville Beach is one of the extraordinary beaches on the Cape Fear Coast. Retaining its quaint feel from years of isolation from the main land (it could only be accessed via boat), Wrightsville offers something for everyone. Whether you’re sunbathing, boating, hiking or brushing up on history in the local museum, the fun never stops, with every season offering unique pursuits. University of North Carolina at Wilmington, not far from Wrightsville Beach, is a picturesque college town with a flurry of activity year-round. The fun doesn’t stop once you step off the beach. In addition to swimming and soaking up the sun, there are plenty of things to do on the Cape Fear Coast that are sure to keep the whole family entertained. With more than 30 championship golf courses in the Cape Fear Coast and nearby Brunswick Islands, golfers are simply spoiled for choice. Perfect greens and stunningly scenic courses are open year-round. Be adventurous and try parasailing or scuba diving, or just have fun surfing and jet skiing through the waves. If you’re new to these sports, stop by one of the local businesses to rent equipment and take lessons. For a more relaxing day, rent canoes or kayaks and venture your way around the coast. The local wildlife lends itself to plenty of bird watching, and the terrain offers a plethora of hiking and biking opportunities. Being surrounded by water certainly has its perks, especially when it comes to fishing. Fishing enthusiasts will drool over the diversity of species in the surrounding waters and the variety of ways to toss out a line. Fish in the surf, explore the fertile waters of the Intercoastal Waterway or take a charter out into the Gulf Stream. If you’d rather fish from the coast, grab some bait and head over to the pier. As you might expect, seafood is a specialty along the coast, and the choices are anything but limited. But if seafood is not your thing, don’t forget about the other varied cuisine, especially our world famous North Carolina barbecue. If you’re looking for a leisurely indoor activity or if it’s an overcast day, peruse the eclectic shops, art galleries and antique stores for local treasures.

Charming and Chic, This Surf Town is the Ultimate Island Getaway Bikini-clad girls and boys in board shorts mingle casually outside a popular surf shop on Wrightsville Beach’s busiest block. Some carry surfboards, still dripping wet from their last ride, while others sit on a ledge, sharing a cold drink with friends. With killer tans, colorful bathing suits, designer sunglasses and broad smiles, these young adults exemplify all that is Wrightsville Beach—hip, colorful, chic, cheerful and fashionably laid-back. It’s where surf culture meets the yachting world—classy, casual and just plain cool. Named one of the top 10 surf towns in the U.S. by Surfer Magazine, Wrightsville is a surfer’s mecca. There are dozens of surf shops throughout the island, including one owned by the parents of the famous surfer Ben Bourgeois. But Wrightsville is also more than just a surf town—it is the ultimate shore destination. With a five-mile stretch of sandy beaches, picture-perfect ocean views, trendy stores, gourmet restaurants and a slew of recreational opportunities, Wrightsville continued on page 20

continued from page 19 provides all the ingredients for a great beach getaway any time of year. Because of the scenic stretch of beautiful beaches, people have been flocking to this thin stretch of Carolina coastline for more than 100 years. At the turn of the century, a trolley system was built to connect the mainland to the island, which in turn brought vacationers from nearby Wilmington and beyond to sunbathe, swim and enjoy some leisure time. The Lumina Pavilion, built in 1905, was a famous gathering place for dancing, playing and mingling. With a bowling alley, shooting gallery, dance hall and movie screen, the Lumina was extremely popular and a major highlight of the beach. Unfortunately, the historic landmark was demolished in 1975. The Wrightsville Beach Museum of History has a whole exhibit on the Lumina, as well as many other fascinating artifacts, photographs and stories from the island’s past. Housed in a turn of the century beach cottage, the museum is a great way to bring those early days of Wrightsville Beach back to life. (The

Of course, one of the reasons Wrightsville is so loved by families, retirees and college students alike is the wide variety of things to do right on the island. The beach is a natural attraction, with opportunities to surf, hunt for shells, fish, play games or just catch some rays. On the harbor side of the island, there are several marinas full of spotless yachts, classic runabouts, sailboats, jet skis and fishing boats, many of which are available for rent or charter. If you are more into pier fishing, head over to Johnnie Mercer’s Pier for an extraordinary view of the ocean and a great place to cast a line or merely watch the locals and see what they are catching. Locals enjoy a popular walking/running path called The Loop, a 2.45-mile path around the inner island, The Loop passes through several parks, scenic marshes and right through town. (Actress Katie Holmes was spotted many times running The Loop when she was living here during the filming of Dawson’s Creek). The Loop is a favorite for both locals and visitors to catch some fresh air and get some exercise in while walking, biking, jogging or skating. Other public parks on the beach offer plenty of outdoor fun—find tennis courts, playgrounds, barbecue pits, soccer and softball fields, basketball courts and trails through marshland and coastal forests. Venture down a five-mile kayak trail and explore the coastal marshes inaccessible by foot.

Down Airlie Road you will find a glorious garden celebrating plants for all four seasons. Stroll down the curving paths and witness a wide variety of unique plants, gaze upon a 400year old Airlie Oak tree and have lunch on the picnic grounds. When you’ve gotten enough sun, take the fun inside for a rewarding adventure. Wrightsville Beach is known for its amazing shopping—many people come from around the region just to browse through the many distinct stores, hip boutiques and charming surf shops. From home furnishings to designer clothes, beach necessities to quality gifts, Wrightsville Beach shops have much more selection than your average beach town. Whether you spend your day surfing or shopping, nothing completes a day in Wrightsville Beach like happy hour, a delicious meal and a water view. Watch the sunset draw another day in paradise to a close as you enjoy fresh seafood, family-style Carolina barbecue or some gourmet island-inspired cuisine. There are dozens of beach eateries serving up a wide array of cuisines, from sushi to steak, pizza to crab legs. After dinner, many area restaurants become popular spots to mingle, sip on cocktails and dance to beach music well into the night. Summer is a magical time that is with us throughout our lives. From days doing nothing between school years as a child to days doing nothing while on vacation from work as an adult, summer is a season of rest and relaxation. We love sitting outside drinking in the sun—and later the millions of stars illuminating a dusky twilight sky—while drinking some adult libations. Gone are the days of whirring up cocktails with mixes filled with artificial flavors and colors. Mixed drinks don’t need to be work, but they do need to be fresh—and unique. Here we offer four of our favorite imbibes—quick and easy, fun and flavorful—to enjoy throughout the summer—perhaps sitting out on your balcony or deck, under the sun and under the stars.

shandygaff Ingredients 4 ounces limoncello 6 tablespoons lemon juice (juice of 2 lemons, approximately)

2 pints Belgian wheat beer 2 pints ginger ale 4 orange slices

Method

Remove cans of lemonade concentrate and orange juice concentrate from the freezer and place in refrigerator to slightly thaw, about one hour. Place bottle of Southern Comfort as well as bottle(s) of lemon-lime soda in refrigerator to chill, about one hour. Puree the strawberries in a blender until smooth, and then strain or press contents through a fine sieve. Chill at least 2 hours before use; will keep in refrigerator up to one week. Make the mimosa: spoon 2 tablespoons of strawberry coulis and 1 tablespoon of orange juice into each champagne flute. Top off with the sparkling wine. Stand Up Paddleboard: Savor the Salt Air

A

s you make your way to the coast, you can smell the salt in the air. After enjoying long days in the sand and sun, there is nothing more relaxing than cruising along the gentle backwaters through the marshes enjoying the ocean breezes and glimpsing the wildlife. The feeling of standing on top of the water while you glide along is almost too much to resist. You can’t cross over the waterway without seeing people stand up paddling and having a great time.

In fact, last year, SUP had more first-time participants than any other outdoor sporting activity in the United States. Even celebrities like Robert Downey Jr., Jennifer Aniston, Matthew McConnaughey, and Rihanna have taken to the water in search of fun and fitness. The popularity of SUP is likely due to how easy it is. Kids, parents, and grandparents can all hop on a stable rental board and enjoy paddling. It’s quick to learn, and after standing up the first time your body balances within a

few minutes. After that, you’re free to cruise around and explore the waterways. Couples can paddle out and find a quiet spot to see a sunset from the water. Individuals can test their balance in SUP yoga. Daredevils can take to the waves or enter a race. There is truly something for everyone with SUP. It can be as easy or as hard as you’d like it to be, this helps with family outings where each person is looking for their own unique experience. Quality rental outfitters, with certified instructors (from a reputable organization), are your best bet to have a great time. It’s important to get a few pointers before you head out. Simple things like which direction to hold the paddle, how to paddle straight, and where to stand on the board can make your time on the water much more enjoyable. SUP is easy enough to just rent and ride, but if you’d like to learn more about technique for fitness, racing, or surf then a lesson is the way to go. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to have such a great time, you will barely notice the full body workout that SUP provides. This year on your vacation, head out on the water, standing, not confined and free to roam. Enjoy clear, quiet water with miles of tranquil marsh to explore. Take a break from the heat and sun as you hop off the board into refreshing waters for a quick swim before you paddle along. This year, try something new. Try SUP! Surfing: S

A WAY OF LIFE

urfing is a way of life on the beautiful beaches of southeastern North Carolina. So many locals cherish and respect the rich history of the sport and lifestyle. It make us who we are. Watching someone glide on a surfboard while perched on the crest of a wave incites awe! It also poses questions like how does one learn and who came up with this exhilarating sport? Today surfing is a way of life for millions of people, but it is wedged in history—born under the feet of indigenous islanders thousands of years ago. Surfing’s legacy began with the first Polynesians who experienced wave riding in route between the tropical islands spotting the Pacific. Fast forward to the present and learning to surf it is at the top of everyone’s bucket list! There is no better place to cross that off your list than the consistent beginner breaks of the Cape Fear Coast and Brunswick Islands. In the summer, the clear and warm water temperature averages in the low 80s, making it an ideal location to learn to surf. Both our spring and fall shoulder seasons are also fabulous as crowds are light and the waves still perfect for learning. Surfing is about getting back to the basics, and learning is popular for both vacationers and locals alike. The best part is that anyone can learn! Surfing provides a platform which builds confidence for beginners, yet it can also humble even the most gifted natural athletes. You can start when you’re 5 or 75 and the key factor is professional instruction. Learning to surf the right way is essential to gaining the fundamental building blocks necessary to achieve your goals. The best introduction into the world of surfing is through a professional surfing lesson or weeklong surf camp. Proper instruction will accelerate your learning curve and take away many of the frustrations beginners face—all while providing a fun atmosphere. When you are ready to catch your first wave make sure you choose a company which can provide you the best wave riding instructions possible. Keep in mind several important factors when selecting a program. First, ask how long the company has been in business. You will tend to find that the longer a company has been around, the better their instructional methodologies. Second, all instructors at a minimum should be certified in CPR/First Aid and teach at a student to instructor ratio of 3:1. Make sure safe, soft-topped boards equipped with safety fins are used. Taking lessons will teach you skills which could otherwise take months and years to learn on your own, while giving you knowledge and resources to continue at your own pace. Picture this: focused eyes, ear-to-ear smile, your instructor cheering you on as you ride your first wave ever. My favorite summer moments are seeing the faces of beginner surfers light up as they ride their first wave! Always remember that the best surfer out there is the one having the most fun. c Pura Vida! WITH JUST ABOUT EVERY TYPE OF WATER ACTIVITY AVAILABLE, YOU CAN SPEND EACH AFTERNOON TESTING YOUR SKILLS ON A NEW WATER SPORT. THINK YOU’VE TRIED EVERYTHING ALREADY? THINK AGAIN!

Surfing Home to Hall of Fame surfers and noteworthy waves, the Cape Fear Coast is the perfect place to hang ten. Whether you own a wetsuit or have never touched a surfboard in your life, surf camps in the area offer everything you need to catch a wave. These camps typically last a week,

and experienced instructors offer private and group lessons to all ages. In addition to the basics, surf camps can educate you on currents, equipment and ecology.

Jet Skiing Speed across the water and over waves, spot dolphins in the surf, and explore island

areas inaccessible by foot on your own personal watercraft. Most rental companies give you a designated riding area to explore, ranging in size. Be sure to ask ahead of time where your area begins and ends. Of course, safety is always key, and our outfitters make sure you are properly trained before driving the craft.

Boating

Cruises

Pontoons, jet boats, sailboats, cruisers, skiffs—the possibilities are endless. Just choose your craft and set out on your own voyage in the surrounding waters. Some companies even offer free water ski, tube and wake-board rentals, so you can enjoy a full day of water sports. And of course, experienced anglers can skip the charter and rent their own skiff for a solo fishing adventure. Whatever your passion, renting a boat is one of the best ways to experience the abundant and beautiful water which surrounds Brunswick and New Hanover counties.

From ferry boats to sunset sails, there is a wide variety of public cruises to choose from in the Cape Fear Coast/Brunswick Islands area. Learn the ropes of sailing on a customized sailboat cruise, spot wildlife in coastal marshes, or just sit back and relax as the sights of the Carolina coast go by.

Kayaking Parasailing What can beat soaring above the beach on a smooth parasail ride? For 25 years, more and more people have been discovering the joys of defying gravity and flying among the clouds. One of the most popular beach activities, parasailing can actually be done without even getting your feet wet. You’ll enjoy the breathtaking view and unbelievable feeling of flight.

Ideal for exploring remote coastal areas, kayaking is a great way to get a close-up view of some of our country’s last preserved natural beaches. Spot wildlife and migrating birds, coast through tall marshes, and enjoy the quiet solitude of nature. Take a kayak tour, and let a guide lead you through unspoiled areas while explaining the ecosystem and wildlife around you. Or just rent a two-person kayak, and explore wherever your heart desires.

Fishing From the brackish waters close to shore to the thriving Gulf Stream, the waters surrounding the southern coast of North Carolina are known to be some of the best by both professional anglers and beginners. Catch a cooler full of fish off a pier located on every island, or simply cast off the shore where you will discover some of the finest surf fishing around. You will find some great catch exploring inland waterways by kayak or canoe while enjoying a beautiful view of scenic marshes and creeks. Deep-sea and inshore charters are also available for those who wish to experience a day excursion abroad catching a variety of fish. Take advantage of North Carolina’s waters—some of the best in the world for sport fishing. c

Take an authenic Trolley ride through Downtown

To guarantee you don’t miss one of Wilmington’s fascinating sites, take a ride with the Wilmington Trolley Company. Operating for 16 years, the company specializes in 45-minute narrated tours every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Trolley riders will learn interesting details about Wilmington’s beautiful mansions, museums, TV and movie locations, African-American history, Civil War shipyards and birthplaces of famous natives. These narrated tours bring new life to the homes, people and events of downtown Wilmington and offer much more excitement than touring the city on your own. After dark, downtown lets its historic hair down as its many eateries, bars and lounges swell with revelers, and a variety of live music pours out into the storied streets. It’s not all that uncommon to bump into the occasional actor or celebrity—being home to Screen Gem Studios, the region has hosted a string of blockbuster movies and hit TV shows. At night, ghost tours and haunted pub crawls meander though the town, describing the eerie tales of local ghosts and ghouls. Apparently, Wilmington is one of the country’s most haunted cities, with the spirits of pirates, explorers and tradesmen with unfinished business. Day and night, Wilmington is alive with activity; yet it still retains that slow Southern atmosphere and quiet seaport charm. Whether you’re here to see the sights and museums or you prefer just to walk about and enjoy the riverfront view, you’ll soon realize why Wilmington has been such a successful coastal town for hundreds of years. c

Who’s Who

In Wilmington Celebrity Sightings in the East Coast’s Hollywood “It” Town

T

he next time you’re walking down the streets of downtown Wilmington, be sure to bring your camera. You will need it as you run into some of the familiar faces that have graced the big screens and small ones. Residents of the historical city are buzzing over the sightings of some of the most well known A-list celebrities in Hollywood. Over more than a decade, Wilmington has become the ideal location for filming a new television series or movie. Nicknamed “Hollywood East,” its quiet, historic charm surrounded by beaches and cobblestone streets, provides the perfect scenery for any storyline with a small town atmosphere and friendly neighbors. Unlike Hollywood, this southern community provides an escape from the city while making film accessible. Wilmington is also known for its incredible selection of fine and casual dining which attracts celebrities throughout the year. Stars such as Dakota Fanning, Alicia Keys and Ben Stiller love dining at the chic and upscale

restaurant Deluxe because of its stimulating atmosphere and fine selection of cuisines. Caprice Bistro is another hot restaurant choice for celebrities such as Nick Lachey, Paul Bettany and Robin Wright. The unique and casual restaurant is known for its French cuisine and creative lounging in the popular Sofa Bar. What makes it so exciting is that you’ll never know who you could see (depending on what’s being filmed). Wilmington is home to EUE Screen Gems Studio, a 50-acre film lot which is home to more than 350 productions, including Iron Man 3 starring Robert Downey Jr. One-hour public tours of the studio are offered throughout the year, a great way to become up close and personal with popular movie and television sets. The FOX television show Sleepy Hollow, first aired last fall, was filmed in Wilmington and signed for a second season. Even though the pilot was filmed in Gastonia, Salisbury and Charlotte, North Carolina, Wilmington was

chosen for the series because of its alluring locales. The CBS science fiction drama Under the Dome, based on a Stephen King novel, was also shot in Wilmington. It’s not just TV shows. Plenty of films have been and are planned to be shot in and around Wilmington. The movie Hornet’s Nest (2013), starring Virginia Madsen was filmed here. A comedy, We’re the Millers (2013) starring Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis and Emma Roberts was filmed here and released last summer. Safe Haven (2013) written by infamous Nicholas Sparks, was another film shot in the Wilmington area. The set was loaded with celebrities including Josh Duhamel (Transformers, Las Vegas), Julianne Hough (Footloose, Burlesque), David Lyons (Revolution, ER) and Cobie Smulders (“How I Met Your Mother”). Sometimes celebrities travel to Wilmington even if they’re not in the process of filming. It has been said that John Travolta visits the town often; yet you will never catch him picking up his luggage in the baggage claim or even walking through the terminal since he flies his own plane into the airport using the Fixed-Base Operator facility. This allows him to fly into the local airport undetected by the public. He even has his own yacht docked in the Port City. Now there’s even a website where people can post about celebrity sightings as soon as they happen! Smarp lets you know which stars have been recently spotted so that you can see which celebrities are in Wilmington during the time of your visit and all year long! Visit smarp.com to learn more about celebrity check-ins and postings, and for more information about EUE Screen Gems Studio, call 910-343-3433 or visit www.screengemsstudios.com c

tarring the world’s most dangerous snakes, Downtown Wilmington’s newest attraction is a world class Reptile Park, all indoors. The stars live in beautiful surroundings created by a Hollywood set crew. Giant King Cobras which rear up at eye level, Black Mambas, Spitting Cobras, sinister Gaboon Vipers, and wicked looking Fer-de-lance snakes are just a few of the rogues in this amazing, two story, 10,000-sq.-foot gallery located on a historic site. A Reticulated Python named “Sheena,” 22 ft. long and weighing more than 250 lbs, swims in her own waterfall. Green Mambas vie for basking spots on a tangle of gnarly jungle vines. Rattlesnakes combat and cobras hood, strike, and copulate right in front of you (it’s obvious the snakes love being here!). Perhaps the most celebrated exhibit is the world’s largest collection of the rare and deadly Bushmaster snake, biggest viper on earth, reaching 12 feet. Man-eating Nile Crocodiles from Africa are nestled in rock grottoes, and a 12 foot Salt Water Crocodile from Australia living in an undersea cave hanging with stalactites, complete the cold-blooded family.

World’s Rarest And

Most Dangerous Snakes, Crocodiles, Dragons and more...

Over 130 snakes are on exhibit, representing every corner of the world. The creator and Director of all this is Dean Ripa, a man whose veins run with as much venom as blood. Bitten ten times by venomous snakes over the course of his career, he has the dubious distinction of being the most Bushmaster-bitten of all time. 80% of all persons who encounter the Bushmaster’s huge inch-long fangs die, even with anti-venom treatment. Ripa has survived four Bushmaster bites to date. You can witness Dean Ripa climbing into the cage with these eight-foot monsters and fending them off the end of tiny barbecue tongs while lecturing you about the astonishing methods these vipers use to get prey. Dean spent over 20 years traveling to the remote reaches of the earth to catch the snakes that are in his museum, and his life’s story is surely one of the most amazing anybody has ever lived to tell about. Scott McKenzie, Curator, will greet you at the door to tell you just a bit more than you might care to know about the fascinating creatures he risks his life on a daily basis to care for. Located along the beautiful new

Cape Fear River Walk in historic downtown Wilmington, the Serpentarium is simply the coolest place in Wilmington—a thrill for snake haters and snake lovers alike! c BIVG15_PAGES 26-33.indd 33

This gateway to Kure Beach, Fort Fisher and the ferry to Southport is but 20 minutes from Wilmington. Valued visitors enjoy a wholesome family environment with renourished beaches, such as Kure Beach, which are wide enough to never feel crowded and are staffed with lifeguards who have won national recognition from the United States Lifeguard Association. Most visitors return here year after year to enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of the “Back in the Day” 1950s as well as the “With It Happenings” of today. This diverse community has an unparalleled quality of life with colorful houses passed down for generations amidst new beachfront condos and hotels. New attractions abound along with a unique boardwalk area, marinas, amusements for all ages, arcades, mini-golf, Surry bikes, campgrounds, a huge charter and fishing boat fleet, sports field, free movies, concerts and weekly fireworks. And that’s only the beginning. While vacationing in Carolina Beach, you won’t have a hard time finding something fun to do for every member of the family. Stroll down the nationally-recognized, vintage seaside boardwalk that was ranked one of the top 10 boardwalks in the country by Food & Wine magazine. All along the boardwalk are dozens of unique shops, delicious restaurants and nightlife entertainment—especially during the summer. The boardwalk comes alive during the summer season like never before with the sound of music playing, people laughing and kids of all ages squealing as they whoosh by on an assortment of exciting rides at the seaside amusement park. But the fun doesn’t stop there. All year long you will find something on the boardwalk to enjoy, whether it is surveying the ocean from the top of the Ferris wheel, tasting Carolina Beach sweets such as homemade fudge, donuts and ice cream while browsing the shops, or collecting tickets for the biggest prize at the local arcade. Carolina Beach recently was awarded $1.6 million in grants to extend and update the boardwalk. The new features include a wider and longer boardwalk, a splash pad park, cooloff stations, educational and historical kiosks and swings. As the heart and soul of this beach town, the Carolina Beach Boardwalk proves to be a favorite for both locals and visitors alike time and time again. Carolina Beach also offers a 761-acre state park with picnic areas, boating, fishing, wilderness hiking and an array of safe wildlife both animal and botanical. Carolina Beach State Park is a popular coastal attraction which offers plenty of outdoor fun. Here you will find a marina

providing access to excellent fishing spots, some of the best in the state of North Carolina. If you are not much of an angler, spend the afternoon exploring the miles of hiking trails for beautiful scenery, the occasional wildlife and a variety of distinct habitats including one that houses one of the world’s most unique carnivorous plants, the Venus flytrap. If you are having so much fun that you don’t want to leave, why not stay the night? At the Carolina Beach State Park, there is a secluded camping area available located right underneath towering trees. Enjoy nature in a unique way at this relaxing and fun state park where you can experience an amazing adventure. The Carolina Beach Lake Park is another great park in the area that was once noted in the Guinness Book of World Records for its freshwater lake’s close proximity to salt water. Along with this 11-acre lake are an two-thirds mile paved walkway, 4 gazebos, sheltered picnic area, playground equipment and amphitheater. Paddle boat rentals are available daily during the summer time and on weekends and holidays during the shoulder seasons. There is many more ways to experience the outdoors in Carolina Beach besides their parks. Rent a kayak and explore the coastline, rent a jet ski with a family member or friend and have an exciting day on the water, take a surf lesson or cast a line off the Carolina Beach Fishing Pier. What makes Carolina Beach so great is the amount of fun, family-friendly activities available in the area. From Free Movies at the Lake to cruising the strip on a surrey bike to simply spending the day soaking up the sun, building sandcastles and playing in the waves—the opportunities are endless!

Come up close and personal with wild animals at the local aquarium, visit one of the art galleries, home to a variety of paintings, sculptures and home décor all made by artisans known both locally and worldwide, or spend the day shopping! You will find plenty of stores throughout the area providing trendy apparel, accessories, shoes, jewelry and more. After an afternoon of shopping, plan a night out and try one of the many restaurants for a delicious meal. Start your day with a warm, homemade donut fresh out of the oven and end it with your favorite coastal cuisine at one of the many restaurants in the area serving great food, home to friendly service and a unique atmosphere. From fresh seafood that just came straight off the dock to hand-cut steaks, alongside a cold craft beer or glass of wine, you will surely enjoy treating yourself. But wait. There’s more! A farmers’ market with arts and crafts blossoms every Saturday and it’s not far away from local surf schools, two 4-wheel drive beach accesses, bike and kayak rentals, stand up paddle boarding and four great children’s parks. Needless to say, you and your family will have a wonderful time while vacationing in Carolina Beach. So much so that you most likely will return next year to do it all over again!

Kure Beach & Fort Fisher Pronounced “Cure-ee,” this beach is a beautiful, relaxed and friendly area of about 2,000 full-time residents. Kure Beach’s peaceful small town atmosphere provides the perfect setting to relax and unwind with the family. Along with its tranquil atmosphere experience an oceanfront park, a nearby

state aquarium and, of course, beautiful surroundings. With its unique features comes unique history. Founded, like Carolina Beach, almost 150 years ago, the town center boasts a 700-foot fishing pier, like the one on the north end of Carolina Beach but active 24 hours a day with fishing supplies and rentals. This is the oldest fishing pier on the Atlantic coast. Whether you are a fan of pier fishing or surf fishing, the waters of Kure Beach have proven to be some of the best fishing in North Carolina. Along with pier and surf fishing there deep-sea fishing charters where both professionals and beginners alike can have an amazing fishing experience out in the open water. There are also numerous fishing tournaments hosted by Kure Beach throughout the year such as the Cape Fear Disabled Fishing Tournament in May and the Pleasure Island Surf Fishing Challenge in October. Another way to experience the waters of Kure Beach is by swimming in them! They say that salt water cures all wounds, and after a swim in the ocean, you will agree. Let the cool water sooth your sunkissed skin and forget all your worries back home. If you are looking for a little more adventurous day on the water, spend the day at a surf camp where professionals teach people of all ages how to stand up on their board and ride a wave all the way to shore. Whether you are an expert or a beginner at surfing, Kure Beach is home to some great waves, so be prepared to “hang loose” for the afternoon! There are plenty of ways to have fun and learn while in Kure Beach like Fort Fisher State Historic Site, a tour trail about one quarter mile long which encircles the remains of Fort Fisher on the river side of the highway. In the early 1800s, Fort Fisher kept the port of Wilmington open to blockade runners who were supplying goods to various Confederate armies inland. As one of the last supply lines running through Wilmington, Fort Fisher became a crucial supply route for Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia. After a massive amphibious assault on January 15, 1865, Fort Fisher was defeated leading to the Union taking control over southern North Carolina near the Cape Fear River where they built what was to become the largest and most significant fort in the South. Two major battles were fought here, which is why now there is only about ten percent of the original land standing. In honor of all the history that took place at Fort Fisher, today you will find exhibit panels with photos and text at different locations all along the tour trail, a visitor center, a small gift shop and a restored gun emplacement located on top of one of the batteries. Uncover history and enjoy nature at this one-of-a-kind state park. In the heart of downtown Kure Beach is Kure Beach Ocean Front Park & Pavilion, the area’s largest public green space providing all sorts of entertainment. The open-air pavilion has a stage where live music is played all summer long. There are also plenty of fun events that take place here throughout the year, a play area for children, swings, rain gardens and more—all along the beautiful oceanfront. Special events include the annual Kid’s Music Fest on Saturday, June 20th from 9 a.m.–12 p.m. and Sunrise Ocean Flow Yoga every Monday from 7:30–8:30 a.m. starting May 4th through August 24th. This premier spot in Kure Beach is also available for rental, excluding the months of July and August and major holidays. You can celebrate a birthday or anniversary, host a baby shower, or even get married under the pavilion overlooking the gorgeous Atlantic! continued on page 39

continued from page 39 If you are a fan of playing a round or two of golf, then you are in luck because Kure Beach and surrounding areas are home to 60 beautiful courses offering both a challenging and relaxing game of golf. Find out why the region was earned the number eight spot on “Golf Digest’s Best Little Golf Town in America” list. Disc golf is also alive and well in Kure Beach. For those who have never played, disc golf is played with Frisbee-type discs instead of golf balls, no tees or golf clubs, and “disc catchers” take place of holes. So, basically all you need is a Frisbee and a little bit of skill! The terrain available in Kure Beach is unique and provides for a challenging, yet enjoyable game for both professionals and beginners alike. Hop on a ferry and experience a scenic trip to the mainland or enjoy Kure’s relatively new board walkway and oceanfront recreation park. That’s not all; check out one of the island’s two tennis courts and two doggie parks plus an 8,000 sq. ft. skateboard facility also on the island. If you are traveling with a family of all ages, these outdoor destinations are great to keep everyone entertained and of course spend some time in the sun with one another. For those shopping savvy visitors, Kure Beach is home to a variety of specialty shops and surf shops offering the latest and greatest in fashion, accessories, home décor and much more. You will find plenty of unique beach treasures that are great for gifts or to merely remind you of your time at Kure Beach. Browse through the aquaticrelated items at these gift shops or update your wardrobe at one of the specialty boutiques. You will also find numerous surf shops with everything from apparel to local photography to surfboards for sale and rent. If your stomach starts to grumble while shopping, there are plenty of eateries that will help you out in a mouth-watering way! While dining in Kure Beach, you will quickly realize that their specialty is fresh, local seafood. You will have plenty of options to choose from whether it’s at a seafood, Italian, American or even locally-owned restaurant. Where you do the eating is just as amazing. Many restaurants offer

outdoor seating where you can enjoy beautiful views of the ocean as you indulge in a delicious meal. Familyowned and operated restaurants are perfect for a romantic date out with your spouse and locally-owned eateries provide dishes made by passionate chefs and friendly owners. As an extension of Kure Beach, Fort Fish is mostly famous for the South’s largest Civil War fort. In 1864–65, the world’s biggest land-sea battle until WWII was fought here, taking the Union Navy two massive attacks to defeat this African-American built fortification. The 1864 battle was the only time in history that the U.S. Marines were denied a beach. Success came early in 1865 effectively ending the War. Although the Fort Fisher Historic Site in Kure Beach is a great representation of all Fort Fisher stands for in history, there are other ways to get to know the area and all that occurred on the very ground you are standing on. Fort Fisher houses two of the four historical visitors’ sites on Pleasure Island. The largest is the State Historical Site/ Civil War Fort & Museum, and the other is the North Carolina Military History Museum on the Ft. Fisher Military Training Center. The Military History Museum is home to numerous outdoor military equipment displays such as tanks and helicopters as well as an indoor display of authentic military supplies, uniforms, photos, weapons and more. The other two are in Carolina Beach; one at the Federal Point Historic Preservation building next to Town Hall, and the fourth, housing the largest public display of local historic photographs in the county (400 photographs), is at a local ice cream parlor/gift shop. Nearby is the North Carolina Aquarium, largest in the state at 93,000 square feet and housing a 235,000 gallon salt water tank. Almost every sea creature and local reptile is on display, and some even have touch tanks where visitors can see and feel fascinating sea creatures. Pleasure Island either has everything or is near all you’d wish for on vacation. Enjoy the best beaches, the cleanest ocean, international, award-winning seafood, famous doughnuts and its oldest ice cream parlor offering over 4,000 flavors served your way—and why not? After all, you’re on vacation! c

FEW LOCALES ARE AS CAPTIVATING AS THE PICTURESQUE DOWNTOWN OF SOUTHPORT. Age-old oak trees line the quaint city streets and frame stately Victorian homes, coastal cottages and historic buildings. Established in 1792, Southport echoes of times past with its historic structures and traditional downtown commercial district. The quaint city streets seem to be taken from a vintage postcard, with old-fashioned storefronts shaded by the famous ancient oak trees. Today modern shops, antique stores, boutiques and restaurants make up the downtown and offer a unique shopping experience. Find priceless antiques, unique arts and crafts, clothing, accessories and loads of gifts in every variety. While the maritime heritage is undeniably strong in Southport, the city’s name reveals even more about its history as a coastal town. When the city was founded in 1792, it was actually called Smithville. For nearly a century, Smithville prospered as a fishing village and military town. It wasn’t until 1887 that the name was changed to Southport. Why? Well, it was anticipated to become a major port city due to its location on the Cape Fear River, Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic Ocean. The port ended up moving farther upstream to Wilmington, but Southport kept the name and continued to grow as a beautiful, yet low-key, seaside town. Among other things, Southport is known as one of the first areas in North Carolina to celebrate Independence Day. In commemoration, Southport is now home to the official North Carolina Fourth of July Festival every year, a four-day event that attracts visitors from around the region for fireworks, festival food and fun. It was in a recent movie Safe Haven that this very parade was re-created with locals acting as extras in the shots. Safe Haven released a casting call to Southport, expressing interest in using local residents to participate in a Fourth of July parade scene in the movie. Participants were given prizes and bragging rights for being part of the major motion picture! Not only were residents given a chance to be part of the movie, but Southport was also given doors which acted as a main set piece from the movie. The doors decorated; “Ryan’s Port Market,” will be used in an upcoming exhibit featuring items from movies filmed in the area the past three decades. The film accented Southport’s Spanish characteristics and beautiful beach it, showed the town’s natural history. continued on page 44 2015/2016 | Brunswick Islands & Cape Fear Coast | 43

Learn more about Southport’s fascinating history on a self-guided walking tour created by the Southport Historical Society. The Historic Southport Trail is a one-mile route through the historic town, with stops at more than 20 landmarks including the Old Brunswick County Jail, Old Smithville Burial Ground and more. Pick up the brochure at the Southport Visitors Center at 113 W. Moore St. Today the spirit of Southport’s maritime heritage can be found throughout the city. At Waterfront Park, watch large transoceanic ships from around the world make their way up the Cape Fear River to larger ports. Lighthouses beam in the distance as ferries, freighters, barges and sailboats cruise past. It is easy to spend an entire afternoon swaying gently on the wooden swings in the park just enjoying the view. From there, take a stroll up Riverwalk, a pathway that weaves around the riverfront through the Old Yacht Basin to the Southport Marina. Along the way, you can take in the sights and sounds of a true waterfront village—fishermen unloading the day’s catch, the horn of a distant ship, the sound of children prancing around in the shallow water. At the end of Riverwalk, you’ll find the immaculate Southport Marina, just steps from downtown. Sailboats, ships and cruisers make a spectacular sight against the Cape Fear River view and charming town streets. Get a deep look into Southport’s seafaring heritage at the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport. Take a self-guided tour through the 12 stations, which highlight the nautical history of the Lower Cape Fear area of the state. You’ll see everything from a 2,000-year-old Native American canoe fragment to pirate memorabilia. One wall is covered with pictures of fishermen posing with their catch of the day. Of course, bringing home those winning fish is one major reason people come to Southport. Its ideal location with access to so many plentiful waters allows for successful fishing year round. Fishing tournaments, charters and commercial companies abound here. The result is not only a good time for anglers but a good time for diners, as well. Area restaurants serve entrees fresh from the sea. Enjoy a bite of local flavor at one of the many downtown eateries, many of which offer outdoor seating and a comfortable atmosphere. Or pick up some fresh catch to bring home at the several fish houses along the Yacht Basin. From shopping to fishing, strolling to just plain relaxing, Historic Southport is a great place to lose track of time. The picturesque seaport may leave you yearning to return, and you’re not alone—the

So slip on some flip-flops, and enjoy a leisurely day around the treasured jewel that is Southport. Rest assured you’ll leave with plenty of shopping bags, full of food, maybe some fresh catch and definitely a clear and relaxed state of mind.

Oak Island With more than 50 public beaches, loads of stores and family entertainment venues, two marinas and plenty of spots to launch a kayak or canoe, Oak Island has become the favorite for families visiting the Brunswick Islands. The island, just across the water from Southport, includes Caswell Beach and the Town of Oak Island, the largest town in Brunswick County. Despite its size, Oak Island has been able to retain a small-town atmosphere, even in the summer months when the population swells with sun-seekers and surfers. Named after the beautiful live oaks which line the island’s streets and inlets, Oak Island is as scenic as it is friendly. From the sandy beaches to the Davis Canal, a quiet waterway which winds its way through the island, there are plenty of recreational opportunities for the whole family. Golfing, boating, fishing, mini-golf and a wide variety of sports are complemented by the vast amount of public beaches, parks and fishing piers. Take a break from kayaking through the scenic canals or fishing off the pier and amble over to the Oak Island Lighthouse. Built in 1858, the 148-foot-tall beacon was turned over to the Town of Caswell Beach and decommissioned as a working lighthouse in 2004. Today, visitors can tour the grounds and climb to the top of the tower for a breathtaking view. Most accommodations on Oak Island are rental cottages, although hotels and condos are available as well. Rental companies provide a wide range of beach homes for any size family. Whether you aim to stay for a weekend, a week or even through the summer, you are guaranteed a low-key, seaside escape. c

Owning a house on the Cape Fear Coast or Brunswick Islands is more affordable than you might think, and now is the perfect time to buy.

he proximity to the ocean, the pure, white, powdery sand of the unspoiled beaches—what’s not to love about this place? Perhaps you feel so at home during your stay that you’re considering making the Cape Fear Coast and Brunswick Islands a permanent home or possibly a secondary one. Buying a home here is easier than you may think—and the perks are better than you’d ever imagine. Century 21 real estate agent Brad Vanderburg explains that the reason the area is so popular for purchasing real estate is because of the low population, the noncommercial atmosphere and the quaint and quiet scene of Brunswick Islands, along with the pristine beaches.

The first decision to make is which area you’d like to call home. Vanderburg recommends the areas of Sunset Beach and Ocean Isle Beach, depending on what buyers are looking for in a location. Both areas are uncommercialized and popular spots for vacationers to stay. Sunset Beach is familyfriendly, laid-back and great for leisurely activities such as biking. Ocean Isle is great for boating, fishing and water sports, featuring concrete canals and an inlet to access the ocean. “It’s a boaters’ paradise,” Vanderburg says. Purchasing a home—even if it’s a secondary home—is a big decision, so it’s important to feel comfortable with your real estate agent and communicate your preferences when

Century 21 has been in the area for more than 50 years, meaning that their agents are extremely qualified and knowledgeable—not only about the houses available but any stipulations or quirks that could hinder your successful buying experience should you try to go at it alone. “Don’t try to do it on your own,” Vanderburg warns. “It’s easy to find a place; it’s harder to get from contract to closing without a real estate agent.” Visit McClure Realty Vacations for a safe, worry-free and profitable way to rent out your home. They’re always accepting new homeowners; however, they recommend joining in the fall so that your rental can be included in their exclusive rental brochure. McClure Realty adds valuable exposure to your home by printing and mailing thousands of full-color vacation rental brochures to repeat and new renters. Their interactive website allows unlimited space for your home’s listing and 24-hour booking. They have one of the lowest commission rates in the area and provide a personalized level of service to their homeowners, including many extras to help out homeowners in any way they can. They’ll help with the pricing of your rental property, arrange needed services or repairs throughout the season, keep your rental property stocked with housewares and kitchen appliances and maintain your property’s value by assessing and repairing minor issues to avoid paying higher repair costs. Brunswick Islands Experience Coastal Charm And Relaxing Calm

S

cenic and serene, yet full of activity, the Brunswick Islands coastal region is known as one of the best places in the country to visit and live. Picture this for your next vacation— quaint coastal villages, bluegreen waters extending to the horizon, white sandy beaches and untamed beach grass swaying in the breeze—in other words—paradise. With more than 45 miles of pristine beach that make up the Brunswick Islands, some visitors are perfectly content to never leave the beach. You can find quiet, isolated spots in the sand, collect shells down by the water or visit one of the bustling boardwalks. With so many beautiful options, you’ll never be far from the next best thing. Oak Island is a delight for the whole family, with 52 different entry points to the spectacular beach. Construct the perfect sandcastle or search for spiraled seashells. Head inland with the family for a round of mini-golf or an ice cream cone on a hot day. Check out the centrally located Shallotte for great shopping, whether you’re looking for brand names or local artists. Stop for lunch or dinner at one of the area’s delectable restaurants or cafes. Only 30 minutes from both Myrtle Beach and Wilmington, day trips to nearby beaches are a breeze.

For a really unique experience on your vacation, visit Ocean Isle Beach, and discover the sea turtles that come to nest each year. On its eight miles of beach, sea turtle eggs and hatchlings can be found for almost half the year. Sunset Beach may be the place to spot seabirds, wetlands and other wildlife, but it’s called Sunset Beach for a reason. With breathtaking views over the water, this beach lives up to its romantic name. Holden Beach provides dramatic landscapes for a picture-perfect afternoon of kayaking or biking. With its small-town atmosphere and flat roads perfect for pedaling, this beach will charm its way into your heart. Once you step away from the beach, the fun doesn’t end. Try one of the many other activities offered on the Brunswick Islands to keep the whole family entertained. With more than 30 championship golf courses in Brunswick County alone, golfers are simply spoiled for choice. Perfect greens and stunningly scenic courses are open year–round. With the diversity of species in our surrounding waters, fishing beginners and enthusiasts alike can find an abundance of places to cast a line. continued on page 47 can try some of the local seafood all along the coast. Calabash, known as the “Seafood Capital of the World,” boasts more than 30 seafood restaurants and hosts more than one million diners each year. Stretching from Wilmington’s bustling downtown with its plethora of dining, retail and sightseeing activities, winding all the way down through the languid Brunswick Isles of North Carolina, your dream vacation is just waiting to be discovered.

OCEAN ISLE

Gem of the Brunswick Islands As one of the smaller islands in Brunswick County, Ocean Isle Beach has a distinctively lay back, resort atmosphere. Eight miles of beaches provide plenty of space to spread out and take part in the many joys of a day at the shore. Fishing piers and coastal marshes invite long afternoons of fishing, kayaking and simply enjoying some peace and quiet. Without compromising the serenity of the island, Ocean Isle Beach also provides a variety of entertaining diversions, such as mini-golf, tennis courts, jet-ski rentals, boating and more. There are plenty of shops

and restaurants, a private airport and the only high-rise hotel on the Brunswick Islands. With so much recreation and entertainment within reach, Ocean Isle Beach is the perfect vacation destination for active families, and many visitors never feel the need to leave the island at all. There’s even a museum--The Museum of Coastal Carolina, right in the main commercial area of the island, features exhibits on science and nature, as well as special programs for kids and adults. So whether you want to spend the day deep sea fishing or digging your toes in the sand, the ultimate island getaway awaits you on the gem of the Brunswick Islands, Ocean Isle Beach.

SUNSET BEACH

A Small Piece of Paradise A one-lane pontoon bridge connects the southernmost island in Brunswick County to the mainland, setting the scene for the quiet, coastal atmosphere that defines Sunset Beach. The smallest of the Brunswick Islands, Sunset Beach is a peaceful place, with only a few shops for beach supplies, bicycle rentals and other necessities—like ice cream. Three miles of expansive beach stretch out in front of wide sand dunes, and dozens of wooden pathways

connect the rows of beach cottages to the sand and surf. The other side of the island is lined with bright green marshes and peaceful waters, perfect for kayaking, canoeing, and turtle spotting. Just across the bridge, there are dozens of golf courses, Calabash’s collection of seafood restaurants and plenty of retail and entertainment venues. But few feel the need to leave the quiet island paradise, where a day can be spent riding your bike along the shore, swimming in crystal clear waters and lying in the sand watching the first stars speckle the sky.

HOLDEN BEACH

A Serene Beach Community— In the Center Of It All The largest of the Brunswick Islands, Holden Beach is still one of the quietest areas along the coast. More than 11 miles of beaches are dotted with beach cottages, homes and condos— and little else. The island is almost entirely residential, with only the basic commercial amenities, like a grocery store, a few restaurants and shops, a marina and beach rental stores. The perfect quiet island escape, Holden Beach is also in the center of it all, with many exciting attractions just a short drive away.

With less than 900 full-time residents, Holden Beach is a quiet community year round, even during the summer when the population swells to well over 10,000. The tight-knit group of locals have a strong pride in their serene beach town and are always welcoming toward visitors who come back year after year for a taste of total relaxation. Settled in the 1920s, the history of Holden Beach begins before the Revolutionary War and centers around one family—the Holdens, of course. In 1756, Benjamin Holden bought four tracts of land on the mainland and island and used the area for fishing and cattle grazing. In 1924, John Holden, the grandson of Benjamin Holden, surveyed a part of the island and called it Holden Beach Resort. Holden built a hotel and a bridge to the island, attracting visitors to the beach for rest and relaxation. While the bridge was destroyed by construction on the Intracoastal Waterway, ferry service began in 1934. After John Holden died, his son Luther took over the hotel and began building homes around the resort area. Luther’s son, John, continued the trend, building rental homes for tourists. By the 1940s, there were several beach cottages peppered across the island. The asking price? $600. John Holden, the grandson of the John Holden who originally settled on the island, worked hard to develop the resort community of Holden Beach, and by 1954, there were nearly 300 homes on the island. Holden Beach was officially incorporated in 1969. A high-rise bridge was built in 1986, providing better access to the small coastal community. John Holden has written a book detailing the story of his family’s development of the island, spanning from 1756 to 2000. The book is available at Alan Holden Vacations. The history of Holden Beach is rooted in family, and today that value of family and community is still an important part of the town. In fact, Holden Beach was named one of the best family beaches in the country by National Geographic Traveler magazine. There is a wealth of wholesome fun to be had from the sea to the sound. Spend an afternoon fishing off a dock, search for newly washed-up shells on the beach, or just spread out a towel and enjoy your front row seat to another magnificent summer day.

SHALOTTE

A Small Town with Leisurely Charisma Shallotte has become the commercial hub of South Brunswick Islands because of its countless restaurants, stores, hotels and shops that are both franchised and local as well as in close proximity to modern conveniences and popular beaches. It all began when a man traveling by ferry came across a river that had not yet been discovered referring to it as Charlotte River. Later, the river became known as Shallotte River and eventually left its mark by passing along its name to the town it runs through. Shallotte quickly developed into a friendly small town with large town amenities. But being commercialized doesn’t take away its charm. Nestled almost directly between Wilmington, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC, Shallotte is known as the center of services, restaurants and shopping for the beach communities of Brunswick County. Shallotte offers a dining experience which will satisfy both your taste buds and wallet, from chain restaurants and dock-to-dish seafood to fresh bakeries and cozy cafés. Speaking of budgets, Shallotte Crossing Shopping Center is one of the fastest growing regions of the state offering over 30 shops with clothing apparel, jewelry, fragrances, home ware and appliances.

While vacationing in Shallotte, don’t be surprised by the wide variety of activities and attractions that are fun no matter what your age! Perhaps you would like to go fishing on the shore, adventuring through a nature trail or merely enjoy a picnic under a gazebo. Whatever it is you would like to do while in North Caroline, Shallotte has it, which is why guests continue to come back to visit this relaxing and delightful town.

The Seafood Capital of the World When a town of 700 people has more than 30 restaurants, you know something special is going on. People from around the region flock to Calabash, a small fishing village on the banks of the Intracoastal Waterway, to enjoy a variety of fresh-from-the-docks seafood, cooked up “Calabash-style”—deep-fried in a light seasoned batter and served hot, with hush puppies piled on top. Aside from the delicious seafood, Calabash offers the rare view of an undeveloped coastal

Homegrown Goodies and Local Libations Get a Taste from North Carolina’s Bountiful Coast The Eats The art of food has been an important tradition in North Carolina’s kitchens for generations. Stemming from family dinners centered on freshly-caught seafood and recently harvested veggies and evolving into culinary masterpieces which still feature local faire has been the main attraction. Chefs understand that vacation is the one time of year that you can get away without having a care in the world. Because of this, they want to make food the last thing you worry about but the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Brunswick Islands and Cape Fear Coast. Juicy, red tomatoes, cool, crisp cucumbers and plump blueberries create a delicious rainbow of flavor when proudly displayed at a local farm market. If you’ve visited the Brunswick Islands and Cape Fear Coast during the summer months, chances are you’ve passed by one of the many farm stands and possibly even stopped to snag some of

the precious bounty provided by area farmers. Here you’ll see an abundance of fresh goodies, including vibrant yellow squash, zucchini, sweet corn, okra, butter beans, grapes, luscious watermelon and cantaloupe, peaches, an assortment of berries, herbs and so much more. Some markets even offer local honey. Let’s not forget the main attraction that draws folks from all around to North Carolina’s shores: the fresh bounty of seafood. Surrounded by oceans, bays and inlets, this part of North Carolina is rich with fresh seafood year-round. Some of the most pristine coastal areas are right around the corner, and thousands of fishermen make a living off reeling in an assortment of fish, including grouper, mahi-mahi, tuna, swordfish, mackerel and shellfish. With more than 30 seafood restaurants within a square mile, the town of Calabash is known as the “Seafood Capital of the World.” The quaint town is a mecca for seafood

lovers; especially those who love fish served “Calabash-style”—deep-fried in seasoned cornmeal batter. If you’re making a trip to Calabash, best come on an empty stomach— many restaurants serve up huge portions and all-you-can-eat platters. Other seafood delicacies which abound on the North Carolina coast are oysters and crabs. They’re served a variety of ways. Many restaurants have their own take on crab cakes and crab dip—and yes, the recipes are a secret. Hard shell crabs are served steamed and seasoned with Old Bay, while soft shell crabs can be found fried, broiled or sautéed, often in sandwiches. Of course since chefs have such a variety of fish coming in fresh each day, the menu options will be different each time. Look for the blackboard listing or check with your server about the day’s fresh catch, which is served in an endless amount of ways— steamed, fried, blackened, or Calabash-style.

Area chefs use their creative license to create delicious dishes with distinctive twists, combining seafood and fresh ingredients from local farms. As seafood is such a unique part of the local culture, coastal Carolinians will find any excuse to enhance a dish with shrimp, crab or fish—and breakfast dishes are no exception. One popular breakfast side is shrimp and grits, the perfect combination of influences from the salty coast and the butter-sweet South. While preparation varies among the restaurants—and family recipes—shrimp and grits is typically made with a generous helping of butter, chopped onions and parsley, with the occasional dash of Old Bay or Tabasco sauce to give it that extra kick. However, the most famous dish in the Tar Heel state has to be Carolina barbecue. First, understand that the word “barbecue” and the word “grilling” are not synonymous, and in this neck of the woods, barbecue means pork; not chicken or beef. Carolina barbecue is a combination of pork, heat and smoke which makes for tender, rich, succulent meat that is chopped and usually paired with a thin vinegar sauce. There are some varieties in the way barbecue is cooked, but nobody is more proud of their barbecue than North Carolinians. Whether you choose barbecue, seafood or juicy steak, you’ll be delighted by the dining options on the Brunswick Islands and Cape Fear Coast, from casual family restaurants to upscale eateries—or dining in the comfort of your beach home. But no matter where you eat, rest assured you’ll get a scrumptious helping of local treats with a side of that good oldfashioned Southern charm with every meal.

The Drinks Nothing goes with a pot of freshly steamed crabs like an ice cold beer or a chilled glass of wine, especially if the sip’s local. Just as the culinary scene in North Carolina has taken visitors on a journey of spectacular eats, the local crafts of fermenting grapes and brewing beer are steadily rising to the top of the popularity scales, and they’re nowhere near stopping. The reason visitors and locals alike have such a passion for local beer and wines is because they want to experience everything about the Brunswick Islands and Cape Fear Coast in its truest sense. Imported beverages can be found anywhere; the ones made right nearby that leave folks longing for a taste and consistently craving more. With the largest beer selection on the island, you won’t have trouble choosing a stout, ale, porter or wheat that’s perfectly paired with your straight-from-the-docks seafood. Of course beer isn’t the only beverage which binds nicely with seafood. North Carolina’s thriving wine industry is giving visitors even more of a reason to want to taste the fruits of labor from the many grape growers and vintners throughout the region. Muscadine is a popular grape for this region which produces a sweet, dessert-style wine. When made correctly, muscadine wine retains a refreshing and often nostalgic taste of the grape itself. However, many vineyards have chosen to plant the classic wine grapes of California and Europe—cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc, syrah and zinfandel. One such vineyard that produces European varietals is Silver Coast Winery located in Ocean Isle Beach, the only winery in Brunswick County. Maryann and her husband Dr. “Bud” Azzato operate the winery, which has been open for 12 years. Maryann says that when she moved to the area 20 years ago, folks would have to travel quite a ways to buy a bottle of North Carolina wine. “I thought I must not be the only person in Brunswick County who likes wine,” she says. And she wasn’t. After opening Silver Coast Winery, the Azzatos received much support from the local community, which truly embraced the winery. In return, the Azzatos began supporting the local community by starting a wine label competition that drew the attention of area artists. They then began hosting events where local musicians could share their talents. At their tasting room in Southport, visitors can try Silver Coast wines (the Touriga is a

must) along with beers brewed right in North Carolina and other regions. Finally, the Azzatos sample and sell their wines at farmers’ markets, bringing the aspect of community full circle. And after all, as Maryann says, “Isn’t that what it’s all about?” Located midway between Myrtle Beach and Wilmington, Silver Coast Winery is now home to international award-winning wines such as Cabernet, White Merlot and Vioginier. These wines, along with every other wine produced at Silver Coast, have been awarded medals at both national and international competitions. Tours and tastings are offered every day, which are a great ways to browse through the unique Barrel Room, witness breath-taking views of the woodland setting and sip on delicious, in-house produced wines. There are a couple other wineries located within an hour of Wilmington offering tours and tastings for those who are interested in traveling and pressing the flesh—of the grape that is. As the twelfth largest wine producing state in the country, it won’t matter how far you travel to spend the day at the winery because each mile will provide beautiful scenery, lovely tasting rooms and, of course, excellent wines. c
