Spring in Boone

s winter melts into spring, our mountains begin their annual awakening and renewal. One of the nation’s most unique ecosystems explodes in blooms on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Explore trails and valleys for rare birds and scenic vistas unhidden by summer leaves. In fact, Grandfather Mountain is home to one of the most diverse bird breeding grounds in the U.S. The melting snow and occasional spring showers enhance the flow of our rivers and mountain streams making this a good time for waterfall viewing, canoeing and kayaking. April ushers in the start of Trout season for one of the best fly fishing destinations in the southeast. The Boone area’s miles of scenic, pristine rivers and streams are a magnet for anglers in search of trout. Professional outfitters can guide you to secret spots for a memorable day of casting from the shore, wading in the rapids, or floating with the flow. April also means the start of great spring events in the Boone area including Merlefest, one of the southeast’s top music festivals, and the Blue Ridge Wine & Culinary Festival featuring the “Fire on the Rock” chef’s challenge. May brings the return of Boone’s free Friday afternoon “Concerts on the Lawn” at the Jones House. In May you can hear that distinctive sound of Tweetsie’s steam Average Temperature whistle signaling the seasonal opening of the Tweetsie Railroad Theme Park, where High Low kids of all ages can take a March 51˚ 31˚ ride on an authentic narrowgauge steam locomotive.

chool’s out, the weather is nice and the mountains beckon. With an average daytime high of 78 degrees and cool evening breezes, it’s the perfect season to visit the Boone area. Families will appreciate the diversity of outdoor adventure like golf, hiking, cycling, horseback riding, fishing, ziplining and a variety of water activities. Enjoy whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking, or perhaps a leisurely inner tube float on world-class rivers. If you like mountain biking, you will love Rocky Knob Park, our 185-acre mountain bike park with 8.5 miles of stacked loop trails, bike skills areas, a pump track, picnic pavilion and natural playground. Explore the past at Hickory Ridge Living History Museum and see how early settlers adapted to mountain life in the late 1700s. Then, stroll through the nearby Daniel Boone Native Gardens to view more than 150 native species of plants. From mid-June to early July, native Rhododendrons put on a spectacular show of blossoms around the area. If you are looking for events, the Appalachian Summer Festival, Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and Boone’s “Horn in the West” (the nation’s third longest running outdoor drama) anchor a summer full of festivals and events. And while you’re here, don’t forget to visit our nationally known attractions like Tweetsie Railroad and Grandfather Mountain.

rom the stunning vistas of the Blue Ridge Parkway to the peaceful beauty of Valle Crucis, the Boone area is a blaze of color during leaf season. The spectacular color palette against a Carolina blue sky is world famous! Fall also features the excitement of Appalachian State Mountaineer Football, arts and craft shows, apple festivals, and signature events like the Valle Country Fair and the Woolly Worm Festival. Fall is the perfect time for a pre-holiday shopping trip to Boone. From the Original Mast General Store in Valle Crucis to the antique and specialty shops in downtown Boone, you will find something for everyone on your list. The Boone area is famous for its Fraser Fir Christmas trees and our large concentration of “choose & cut” tree farms. So, step away from the artificial trees and bring the family to Boone to pick out your farm fresh Christmas tree this year. You don’t even have to bring a saw! Pick out the perfect tree and the farm staff will cut it, net it, and secure it to your vehicle. Many of the area farms offer hayrides, music, hot chocolate and apple cider to further enhance the experience. And, if it’s cold enough to make snow, many of the area ski resorts open in late November and offer great early ski season deals.

he South’s most concentrated cluster of ski slopes tempt the entire region with winter activities that also include snowboarding, snow tubing & sledding, ice skating, hiking and cross country skiing. In the Boone area, snow making just keeps getting better and slope conditions stay more consistent. With three ski resorts (Appalachian Ski Mountain, Beech Mountain, and Sugar Mountain) all within a 30-mile radius, Boone is considered the ski capital of the south. This year Sugar Mountain will open a brand new intermediate slope in addition to its other runs. Bring your own equipment or rent everything when you get here. Need a lesson? No problem! Appalachian Ski Mountain is home to the French Swiss Ski School, the best known ski school in the Southeast, where they have taught over a million people from ages 4 to 88 how to ski. In addition to skiing, there are also snowboarding terrain parks, ice skating rinks and Hawksnest Resort, the largest snow tubing operation on the East Coast with 20 lanes. After your day of winter fun, cozy up by the fire or enjoy one of our great local restaurants for a warm, hearty meal. Winter in the mountains is a special time. The people of Boone are warm and friendly and invite you to enjoy life at a leisurely pace.

history, and cultural scene. Tour the historic frescoes that adorn area churches or visit the historic Jones House. Spend enough time here in the summer and you might even spot a celebrity. Appalachian State University's Performing Arts Series and annual Appalachian Summer Festival bring some of the most well-known performers to the area all season long. The adventure doesn’t end when the cold weather begins. The Boone area boasts the most concentrated cluster of ski slopes in the entire region, including several black diamond slopes for the truly daring. For others, there is snowboarding, snow tubing, sledding, ice-skating, snowshoeing, and crosscountry skiing. Consider spending the holidays in our winter wonderland, or at least make a weekend out of a trip to one of our choose-and-cut Christmas tree farms. It’s never too late to start a new tradition.

It’s easy to browse a morethan-century old country store and a modern outlet mall in the same trip. Add in outdoor sports shops, coffee bars and bookstores and shopping the Boone area can be warm even in winter. Looking for artsy, artisanal and authentic? The “buy local” trend is evident in the Boone area. Handcrafted items, one-of-a kind works of art, and collections of unique products are a staple

It’s an 85 foot waterfall near the town of Elk Park. Travel down 19E towards Tennessee, turn right on Old Mill Road, then left on Elk River Road. Travel several miles and the road dead-ends into the falls.
Glen Burney Falls
Crabtree Falls
It is in the Town of Blowing Rock just two blocks from Main Street. Laurel Lane parking area sits across from Broyhill Park. The trail descends steeply through John’s River Gorge and is not recommended for beginners. Plan for an hour hike and the trip back will take considerably longer. Strenuous hike!
It’s a 60 foot waterfall located at milepost 340 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Enter at Crabtree Campground and Visitors Center. There is a well marked parking area for hikers. The trail is a 2 mile loop and the fall is at the back of the trail.
Cascades
