he combination of delectable cuisine, first-class service and elegant atmosphere is leaving diners raving about Kathryn’s Bistro and Martini Bar. Voted #1 Fine Dining on the Crystal Coast in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011, Kathryn’s has become Emerald Isle’s premier restaurant, drawing praise from both traveling visitors and grateful locals alike. Ken Ayre, co-owner with his wife, Kitch, says he receives positive feedback nightly in the restaurant. People say, “Thank you so much for opening Kathryn’s! We never come to Emerald Isle without dining here!” As Kathryn’s heads into its ninth summer since its opening in June 2004, the family business is still first-class all the way. “The most important aspect of our business is ensuring a wonderful dining experience for our customers,” Ken says. Kathryn’s does this through its incomparable menu which is filled with offerings of fresh, local seafood and Certified Angus Beef.
Voted #1 Fine Dining On the Crystal Coast 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 & 2011! While every menu item is sure to please, Kathryn’s Maryland Crab Cakes have become the restaurant’s signature entrée. Made with fresh, local lump crabmeat, even folks from Maryland (The Ayre’s home state before relocating to Emerald Isle in 1995) admit that Kathryn’s crab cakes are the best! Kathryn’s also puts a twist on traditional southern cuisine with the Carolina Classic: Kathryn’s own version of shrimp and grits—a true southern favorite! In addition to our menu, Kathryn’s offers several nightly specials including creative varieties of fish, lamb, lobster, and soft shell crabs. “Specials give us a chance to be innovative through fine cuisine and to provide our guests with variety,” Ken says. Kathryn’s has also become Emerald Isle’s favorite place to enjoy a martini. The first-class martini bar, housing over 30 different variations of martinis, includes favorites such as the Original and Dirty Martini, as well as exotic creations such as the Emerald Isle Martini and the Hypnotic Boombatic. Along with a full-service martini bar, Kathryn’s also offers an extensive selection of wines by the glass and by the bottle. Due to a growing demand from customers, Kathryn’s launched off-site catering in 2009. Whether you are having a wedding, a birthday party, or a family gathering, Kathryn’s catering services make entertaining easy. From intimate to grand, lavish to informal, Kathryn’s will assist you in customizing the perfect menu. Kathryn’s will be there every step of the way to lend a hand planning and executing your special event. We encourage you to visit our website, kathrynsbistro.com, for more information. Combine superb food with the dedication of the Ayre family and the expertise and loyalty of their staff, Kathryn’s is truly a dining experience to remember. Find out why Kathryn’s is voted #1 Fine Dining on the Crystal Coast!

welcome
welcome to North Carolina’s Crystal Coast!
Discover a place where white sandy beaches, historic seaports and pristine nature seamlessly combine. Where boaters and golfers, sunseekers and Civil War buffs all find happiness. Where everyday life becomes something truly spectacular. Discover the Crystal Coast. A collective name for North Carolina’s Southern Outer Banks, the Crystal Coast spreads from Cedar Island in the east to Swansboro in the west and from the Bogue Banks in the south up north to New Bern. It includes the beautiful beach
areas of Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle as well as the historic towns of Beaufort and Swansboro. This extraordinary coastal area boasts some of the best beaches on the East Coast but lacks the crowds and traffic which plague many coastal communities. And it is all set in one of the most historically important areas in North Carolina. From swashbuckling pirates to Civil War battles, this region has seen some interesting times. Tour important Civil War sites such as Fort Macon, which was bombarded by a Union land-sea operation, or the battlefield of the famous Battle of New Bern, in which Union forces took control of the important city. New Bern, the second oldest town in North Carolina, offers a wonderfully scenic historic district, fine dining, specialty shops and more all within the quaint downtown. Take in the historic sights, beautiful gardens and waterfront views on a Historic Trolley Tour. The historic town of Beaufort, incorporated in 1722, is in fact the third oldest town in North Carolina and features many Civil War as well as colonial highlights in its historic district. A tour of the waterfront town showcases its oak-lined streets, Victorian homes and quaint atmosphere and is one of the best ways to capture the essence of days gone by. Just three miles off the coast of Beaufort are remnants of one of the region’s most famous visitors, Blackbeard the pirate. At the bottom of the sea lies Blackbeard’s infamous ship, Queen Anne’s Revenge. The sunken seacraft was discovered in 1996; since then, archeologists have recovered artifacts from the watery grave, and they are now on display at the North Carolina Maritime Museum in downtown Beaufort. Deep diving is one of the most popular activities for visitors and locals due to the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and plentitude of wrecks to explore. In fact, there are more than 2,000 vessels underwater. And with water as warm and clear as Caribbean seas, diving at the Crystal Coast is an experience like no other. There are hundreds of other ways to explore the multiple waterways surrounding the Crystal Coast. With the longest fishing season on the Atlantic Coast, anglers can enjoy year-round success on the rod. Multiple species pass through these waters, all of which can be found grilled, steamed, blackened and fried at area restaurants. From gourmet plates to mom-and-pop delights, dining options are quite varied, but you’re guaranteed to find the freshest seafood and a friendly face wherever you go. If your vacation goal is solitude, getting away is easy to do on the Crystal Coast. Navigate your own kayak or canoe around the undisturbed shoreline of the Cape Lookout National Seashore. Fifty-six miles of natural beaches surround the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, and it is all undeveloped, quiet and beautiful. So whether you’re here to learn about times past, explore the serene beaches of our coast or just sit on a beach towel and let your worries melt away, we hope you have a wonderful time discovering the Crystal Coast. c

The NC Aquarium

at Pine Knoll Shores
Enjoy gallons of family fun at the aquarium, featuring more than 40 aquatic exhibits, plus a host of daily programs free with admission, and special themed days throughout the summer. And there’s always something new to “sea.” Look for Sea Turtle Rescue, near the Gift Shop. Put on your lab coat and be a hero in this hands-on exhibit that lets you “treat” injured or ill sea turtles, and simulate care of weak hatchlings. Be sure to visit the live hatchling in the exhibit, and don’t miss the nearby habitat where Nimbus lives. The rare white sea turtle is the guest of honor Aug. 13 for the annual Sea Turtle Celebration, which also includes activities, special displays and programs. Nimbus, who turns three in August, inspired the annual observance that emphasizes how beachgoers can help nesting sea turtles and hatchlings. Turtles of all types are in the spotlight every week on Turtle Tuesdays, June 11 through Aug. 6, with crafts, encounters with real turtles and other activities.
Fin-Filled Fridays feature sharks every week from June 14 – Aug. 9. Fun programs, activities and displays focus on these magnificent creatures, their troubles, and their critical role in the ocean ecosystem. For an extra dose of toothy times, Shark Week July 28 – Aug. 3 expands the fun frenzy. Any day you visit, stop by the new activity on the back deck, Shark Tooth Creek, after you’ve enjoyed your Aquarium tour. Buy a bucket of sand, run it through a sluice and search for fossilized sharks’ teeth and other treasures to take home. Send your visit to new heights with Winging It: Birds in Flight as it soars into an all-new show. Wise up about owls, pelicans, hawks, vultures and other native raptors and water birds in a fun but informative format. This ticketed show runs daily at 1 p.m. Three more reasons you “otter” visit – Neuse, Pungo and Eno. The river otters – named for North Carolina rivers – star in special programs at their exhibit four times a week, in addition to their daily
devotion to fun and frolicking. See how the otter keepers care for the playful trio in the Otter Antics behind-the-scenes tour, available for a small fee in addition to admission. Other behind-thescenes tours feature shark feeding, fish feeding or overall views of aquarium operations. Ask about other family-friendly indoor activities and outdoor adventures such as fishing, kayaking, collection cruises and more. c CONTACT: 252-247-4003; www.ncaquariums.com/ pine-knoll-shores HOURS: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily, including all holidays except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s days; early closings for Halloween and Christmas events. family fun
Family Fun from the beaches to blackbeard, puttputt to parasailing, the crystal coast offers exciting acitivities for all ages For some kids, a plastic bucket, shovel and plot of sand are all they need for a day’s worth of entertainment. From swimming to sandcastle building, shell searching to just plain goofing around, family fun on the beach is what makes a vacation to the Crystal Coast so memorable. But beyond the beach, you’ll also find numerous activities to entertain the whole family, from the 5-year-old balls of energy to those hard-to-please teenagers. Spend a day at one of the many amusement parks in the area, which offer everything from bumper boats to go-kart racing, rock climbing walls to
water slides. Many attractions stay open well after the sun sets, ensuring a full day’s worth of fun. Mini-golf is particularly popular, day and night. Challenge the family to 18 holes of putt-putt through waterfalls and windmills on one of the area’s lighted and extravagant courses. Even the kids will enjoy a history lesson at the Crystal Coast’s own captivating museums and historic areas. Visit the Beaufort Historic Site, and get a glimpse of what this coastal region was like during the 18th and 19th centuries. Costumed guides tell fascinating stories about Beaufort’s past, including tales about the town’s most infamous visitor, the pirate Blackbeard. Afterward, catch a glimpse of some of Blackbeard’s treasures and personal belongings at the North Carolina Maritime Museum. A recent addition is the North Carolina History Education Center located in New Bern, with 60,000 square feet of interactive fun for all ages. Get up close and personal with nature at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, which showcases local wildlife from the land and sea and provides interesting facts about the region’s ecosystem. For a more hands-on experience with nature, hop on a ferry to Cape Lookout National Seashore, and explore maritime forests and pristine beaches, or head to Shackleford Banks and look for wild ponies grazing on the beach or seeking shade under the trees. There are several nature cruises that take visitors to places inaccessible by foot, with knowledgeable guides pointing out plant life, birds and animals on shore. Of course, there are dozens of ways to get out on the water and explore. Rent a speedboat or wave runner, and set your own course across turquoise waters. The wind and the ocean spray will be a welcome cool-off after a day spent sunning on the beach. Other ways to explore the wide open seas include sailing, sunset cruises, parasailing, dolphin-watching trips, fishing charters, kayak excursions and much more. From toddlers to teenagers, parents to grandparents, people of all ages flock to the Crystal Coast year after year to enjoy the beaches and wide variety of activities and attractions. With all these entertaining options plus miles and miles of beautiful beaches to explore, the Crystal Coast tops the list of any family seeking the ultimate beach vacation. c

Atlantic Beach The quintessential beach community, Atlantic Beach, expertly balances low-key, residential areas and bustling beachfront entertainment. Part of the Crystal Coast, this area is rich in beauty, history and activities to satisfy all ages. As one of the oldest towns on the Bogue Banks, Atlantic Beach sprouted up from a beach pavilion built in the late 1800s to provide oceanfront entertainment for tourists staying across the sound in Morehead City. Over a century ago, Bogue Banks became home to one of the first bathing pavilions in order to accommodate guests of the New Morehead City Hotel who were accustomed to bathing in the ocean. Word spread, patrons flocked to the area, and the Atlantic Beach resort was formed. By the 1920s, and after several business deals, a new Atlantic Beach opened in an area known as the “Circle” on Bogue Banks. This new area boasted two bathhouses—one for men and one for women—and quickly prospered with the addition of a bridge that connected Atlantic Beach to the mainland. During the Great Depression, the Atlantic Beach property encountered several setbacks but was eventually held by the Manufacturers

Atlantic Beach Bank and Trust Co. of New York. With the prospect of a thriving resort area in mind, the Atlantic Beach and Bridge Company was created to rebuild the resort and operate the toll bridge. In 1930, the beach and resort reopened for business. A year later, Newman Willis moved to Atlantic Beach with his wife and became the first permanent resident as well as the town’s first mayor. In just a few more short years, the area was marked out for streets, and property lots were sold. More structures followed as well as the construction of the boardwalk along the oceanfront. Today, the pavilion no longer exists, but the site on which it stood is now part of the Atlantic Beach Circle, a reference point for locals and visitors alike. Souvenir shops, a small boardwalk, restaurants and more keep the Circle a popular social spot for both teenagers and families. Despite starting out small, the town of Atlantic Beach is a flurry of activity during the summer season.
The miles of beautiful beaches that make up Atlantic Beach are its most popular attraction. There are several public access points to the shore, so sunbathers, swimmers and surfers can spread out and enjoy a little piece of paradise. Whether you set out to build a sandcastle that can withstand the waves or just plan on getting your feet wet, the sandy shores are sure to please. Unique gift stores, classic surf shops and quaint businesses are in abundance, and there are area amusements and entertainment options to fit all ages. Those who stay on land will find plenty to do—golf courses, amusement parks, movie theaters, nightclubs and shopping are just a few options. There are also plenty of biking and jogging paths to be enjoyed, which are recent civic improvements. While Atlantic Beach maintains its small-town feel, there are numerous activities available to visitors. Because of the ideal location on the coast of North Carolina, fishing and boating
are two favorite pastimes. Water lovers will find many other ways to get out on the ocean or sound, from waterskiing to sailing, kayaking to windsurfing. For those who want a relaxing experience, charter a boat for a dinner cruise or to watch the sun set over the water. Adjacent to Atlantic Beach is Fort Macon, a Civil War fortress that features 385 acres of pristine beach and maritime forest. Learn about the fort’s fascinating history in the museum and historic area on your own or by taking a tour. Then, enjoy a picnic lunch or just soak up the natural beauty of the site, which is surrounded on three sides by water. If you happen to be visiting during the Fourth of July, show your pride and shag skills at the annual Independence Day Celebration. Residents and visitors look forward to a full day of festivities, which includes a live band and fireworks. Something unique to this part of the North Carolina coast is the annual arrival of sea turtles. In Atlantic Beach, sea turtles, the most common being loggerheads, nest from May to October. The residents of Atlantic Beach make an effort to protect these incredible animals and encourage visitors to be aware of the nest sites during the summer and fall seasons. Up until August sea turtles will surface during the night to lay their clutch (a nest of eggs) on
“If you have a passion for helping these sea creatures as much as the volunteers on Atlantic Beach, you can take part in the efforts too.” the shores. The turtle will make her way above the high-tide line and begin digging a large depression into the sand called a “body-pit” and another smaller one inside called the “egg chamber.” As the name suggests, it is in this chamber that the female will deposit her ping pong ball-sized eggs and cover them with sand until they hatch. A sea turtle can deposit anywhere from 50 to 200 soft-shelled eggs at one time. Continued on page 26>>> 2013/2014 | Crystal Coast | 25

<<<Continued from page 23 Once fully grown, the hatchlings begin their lifelong adventure by first traveling across the sand en masse to the ocean. Huddled under the dark of night, the hatchlings will surface but with a tentative precaution. They are easily deterred by humans, animals or even artificial lights such as porch lights, flash cameras and flash lights. So if you are planning a night excursion on Atlantic each, be aware of where you are stepping and careful where you shine that flash light! Though independent as these tiny creatures may seem at such a young age, do not be fooled—they are quite delicate. Sea turtles have been on the endangered species list for many years now, with the main cause of their population decline being human involvement. In an effort to help sea turtles from getting trapped in fishing nets or longlines, the U.S. Federal Government and the shrimp trawling industry worked together to create a Turtle Excluder Device (TED). The device essentially allows the turtles and other sea creatures captured unintentionally to escape without affecting the fishermen’s catch. While it seems the life of the sea turtle is dappled with woes and formidable challenges, there are those willing to help. Residents on Atlantic Beach are in tune to the trials of the turtles and have taken it upon themselves to do their part to help protect these fragile creatures. Volunteers scour the beaches in search of turtle tracks. They follow the tracks to the nesting site and dig carefully by hand to discover the actual nest. Once the location is verified, the site is marked off and then roped off with tape, like a mini crime scene. If you have a passion for helping these sea creatures as much as the volunteers on Atlantic Beach, you can take part in the efforts too. Hospitals on the Crystal Coast such as the Karen Beasley Hospital on Topsail sometimes hold a celebratory turtle release once a turtle has been nursed back to health. These events are usually spread by word-of-mouth. If you see a small crowd of people congregating at a localized spot on the beach with banners and cheers filling the air, you can be sure a turtle release is in progress. Stop by and watch as volunteers send the turtle back to its natural habitat. c

Aside from the gorgeous nature, the delectable seafood and the hometown charm found on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, there’s one specific reason that people become so infatuated with the area: it’s because of the wild horses that have roamed this area for centuries. There’s something magical about watching these peaceful animals grazing on water grass or roaming the island, their manes blowing gently in the breeze. For precious moments, visitors can experience an up-close glimpse into their serene world. One of the best places to spot these graceful creatures is on the shores of Shackleford Banks. Folks commonly travel to these pristine islands through a local ferry service. Once they arrive, it’s common to sit in awe, watching the horses swim from one island to the next. Sometimes they’re seen in small herds, and sometimes privileged gazers will witness a mother horse tending to her foal. Although the horses live on their own in the wild and although there are between 110–130 horses to keep track of on Shackleford Banks, they’re by no means strangers. Each foal receives a name when it is born, which starts with the first letter of its mother’s name. Another factor for naming the foals is the year in which they’re born, with each year having its own theme. The lettering system helps researchers to track the material lines of all the horses, and the theme of their name helps to identify their age. The horses are protected by the National Park Service and even by residents of the Crystal Coast who volunteer through an organization called The Foundation for Shackleford Horses. All the people associated with this organization are unpaid; they generously donate their time and resources for one simple reason—because they care. The president of this organization, Carolyn Mason, has adopted several wild horses that are unable to survive in the wild and has taken them to live on her farm. One horse in particular has become quite famous on the Crystal Coast. In 2011 Hurricane Irene swept through the area, endangering the lives of the horses who typically take shelter in the maritime forest or the groves of myrtle and cedar along the edge of the island. After the hurricane when people from The Foundation searched the area to make sure all the horse were alright, they discovered something unexpected: a mare named Anastasia had birthed a foal immediately after the hurricane. Even though the theme for 2011 was Spanish names, The Foundation and the Park Service wanted to keep with the hurricane theme, but they couldn’t pinpoint a word in the Spanish language beginning with the letter ‘A’ that kept with this idea, so they agreed that the most fitting name for this miracle horse would be Aftermath. This adorable young colt is currently living under Mason’s care while his mother, Anastasia, regains her strength. Aftermath isn’t the first horse to be looked after under Mason’s attentive care. She’s well experienced in assisting horses that are unable to live on their own in the wild, tending to their needs and giving them a comforting place to stay until they’re ready to rejoin their herd. Among these, Mason cares for a horse that had trouble eating due to a massive overbite and a
shackleford banks’ captivating herd of wild horses are thriving and expanding, even in the ‘aftermath’ of a major storm horse that has trouble walking because the overabundance of cartilage in its knees couldn’t support its body. Thanks for the efforts of Mason and others who volunteer for The Foundation for Shackleford Horses, these enchanting creatures will continue to strive and flourish. Most importantly, they’ll be able to carry on the tradition of generations of wild horses that make up the most captivating history of the Crystal Coast. Named after its beautifully lush maritime forests, Emerald Isle is a laid-back beach community comprised of unspoiled beaches, pristine forests, quaint beach cottages and loads of activities for the whole family. Originally inhabited by Native Americans, the island was explored and used by English colonists and also by pirates, such as the infamous Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard. In 1893, a group of families came to the island and settled there, creating the town of Middletown. Still, it remained largely uninhabited until the 1950s, when cottages first began to dot the beaches. It was then that Henry K. Fort of Philadelphia bought what is now Emerald Isle and part of Cape Carteret as an investment. He saw the success of neighboring Atlantic Beach and imagined

Emerald Isle Emerald Isle expanding to a resort of the same caliber. However, Fort couldn’t secure enough support to build a bridge, and his dream of a resort community was abandoned. After Fort’s death, the land was inherited by his daughter Anita Fort Maulik, who ultimately sold the property to a group of investors from Southeastern North Carolina. The land, not yet known as Emerald Isle, was purchased for $350,000, the largest amount in Carteret County history at the time. The seven investors then divided the land into 54 blocks, each a little more than 1,000 feet wide, and development was underway. Ferry service began in 1960, connecting the mainland to the beaches and increasing the number of visitors to the budding coastal village. When the Cameron Langston Bridge was built in 1971, development continued, bringing in more beach rentals, attractions and restaurants to the family-oriented beach community. Today, Emerald Isle is abuzz during the summer and peacefully serene throughout the rest of the year. While more than 3,500 people are lucky enough to call the town home, in the summer, the population quadruples as families flock to the Bogue Banks for the ultimate beach vacation.

After crossing the drawbridge from the west into the quaint town of Beaufort, you’ll find yourself in a place like no other. Breathe in the fragrant salty air as you stroll leisurely down the tree-lined streets and past historic homes and buildings. Investigate the mysteries of local legend Blackbeard the Pirate underwater or in an interactive museum. Hop aboard one of the many boats that can take you to the nearby Cape Lookout National Seashore to explore pristine nature and beautiful scenery. Or just sit back and relax on the patio of a lovely old inn and toast to another relaxing day in this seaside paradise. Most of all, it is the history of the town that gives Beaufort its distinct character and unique setting. Both quaint and bustling, Beaufort is a small North Carolina port town but with enough attractions, amenities and activities to rival any seaside destination, earning it the title of “Coolest Small Town in America,” by Budget Travel Magazine for 2012. Settled in 1709, Beaufort is North Carolina’s third oldest town. Originally inhabited by the Coree Indians in their village, Cwarioc, meaning “fish town,” Beaufort was then inhabited by French Hugenots and eventually settled by the British in 1709. In 1713, Robert Turner, who held the original land grant for 200 acres, laid out the town and named the streets just as they are today. The town was

Beaufort <<<Continued from page 32 named in honor of Turner’s friend Henry Somerset, Duke of Beaufort, and was incorporated in 1722. By the late 18th century, Beaufort was becoming an active seaport. Inhabited by sailors, privateers, fisherman, soldiers and planters, it was a diverse community with a common thread—the sea. While Beaufort’s active sea trade allowed it to be connected with seaports thousands of miles away, its geography kept it isolated from the interior of the state. This isolation has helped the town retain its historic appearance. As the seaport became active so did the lingering pirates, one in particular you may have heard of—Edward Teach a.k.a. Blackbeard. He and his crew would come into the Pamlico Sound to visit and resupply, and the Beaufort harbor became their comfortable place for rest and rejuvenation. Most were appalled that these pirates were allowed to roam the land freely and were tolerated by government officials. According to popular belief, Blackbeard was a frequent visitor to Core Sound, perhaps residing at the Hammock House when in the neighborhood. Legend has it that he would merely anchor his ship in the creek, row to the house and tie up on the porch post, while other stories depict Blackbeard burying treasure in the Hammock House yard, —WATERFRONT DINING— although none has been found to this day. Artifacts from Blackbeard’s famous flagship, the Queen 218 Front Street Anne’s Revenge (which ran aground on a sandbar On The Waterfront, Beaufort near Beaufort) can be found at the NC Maritime (252) 728-5190 Museum. www.thespouterinn.com << Scan here to go to our mobile site! regular visits to Beaufort. In 1907, the railroad station on Broad Street was built, and a new, large brick courthouse was built on the square. Still standing today are the homes of Beaufort’s early sea captains, seafarers and merchants. Beaufort boasts more than 100 homes in the Historic District (which is on the National Register of Historic Places) that are more than a century old and several private residences that are more than 200 years old. In many of these homes, you will see the influence of the West Indies architecture brought to Beaufort from generations of sea trade. The Beaufort Historical Association, which celebrates its 53rd Anniversary this year, owns and operates the Beaufort Historic Site, a two-acre complex that includes eight historic buildings, six of which are restored, ranging from a 1778 primitive cottage to the apothecary shop and doctor’s office of 1859. Tours of the historic buildings as well as the Old Burying Grounds and Historic District Bus tours aboard a 1967 open-top double-decker bus are all available. Visit the Safrit Historical Center, which acts as the visitor’s information center for Beaufort and surrounding areas, and it also houses the Old Beaufort Shop, where visitors can purchase gifts, toys and handcrafted items created by local artists. The BHA’s biggest event, this year’s 53rd Old Homes and Garden Tour along with the Antique Show and Sale are sure to impress visitors and locals alike, showcasing historic antebellum homes and beautifully manicured gardens, churches, artist’s studios and more. This not-to-be-missed walking tour takes place June 28th and 29th, with the Antique Show and Sale running June 28th – 30th in the Crystal Coast Civic Center in Morehead City. At the North Carolina Maritime Museum Watercraft Center, visitors can watch the construction and restoration of wooden boats and ship models. Continued on page 36>>>

Outstanding shell collections and a variety of field trips, lectures and programs for all ages round out the offerings of this excellent museum. Beaufort’s rich history, though, can’t compete with the sheer beauty of the coastline that surrounds it. Walk along Beaufort’s waterfront and look across Taylor’s Creek to herds of wild ponies grazing just as their ancestors did in colonial times. Ferry operators, local boat tours, and kayak rentals are available to the wildlife refuges and national seashore of Shackleford Banks, Bird Shoals and Carrot Island. Pristine beaches and beautiful waters await you there. Take a picnic and plan to fish, camp, collect seashells, swim or just relax in a gorgeous setting. When not exploring the outdoors or immersing yourself in Beaufort history, stop in to do some shopping at some of the town’s quaint shops or boutiques. Visitors could spend hours wandering the streets and popping into the eclectic stores. It’s always a great time for antiquing, and Beaufort’s shops are filled with vintage treasures. Sample some fudge for that sweet tooth craving, or roam the colorful aisles of a local bookstore to find that perfect read for the beach. After you’ve shopped up an appetite, grab a bite at one of the cafes, restaurants or specialty food stores that line the waterfront and historic streets. Enjoy the fresh catch at area seafood venues, or take a seat at one of the local favorites and get a true feel for this bustling waterfront village. Swansboro a historic waterfront with stories to tell Perched along the shores of the White Oak River, Swansboro hints of a simpler time in North Carolina’s past. At more than 200 years old, the historic waterfront haven rests on rolling hills, looking over the scenic river. Built on the remains of an Algonquian Indian village, Swansboro traces its beginnings to the 1730s, when Jonathan and Grace Green moved south from Falmouth, Massachusetts and settled
Today, Swansboro is known as a quiet and unique waterfront town, with a vibrant arts community and many special events throughout the year. In fact, the oldest festival in North Carolina, the Mullet Festival, takes place here the second Saturday in October. Business showcases, oyster roasts, open houses, arts festivals and firework displays bring people from around the area to this small town year round. Opportunities for recreation abound, too. Vacationers are invited to use the local wildlife boat access ramp. Explore the White Oak River by canoe or kayak, or rent a boat for an exciting fishing charter. Cyclists will love the 25-mile Swansboro Bicentennial Bicycle Trail, which travels along the Croatan National Forest and Cedar Point Recreational Area.

here. Swannsborough, as it was originally known, was incorporated in 1783, making it the oldest town in Onslow County. Named after Samuel Swann, prominent in North Carolina’s pre-Revolutionary history as Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives, the town became an established seaport in 1786.

Venture by ferry or private boat to Hammock’s Beach State Park on Bear Island to experience Onslow County’s coastal shores in a rustic setting. Bear Island served as an Indian hideout in the Tuscarora Wars of 1711 and 1713. Another gem among Swansboro’s notable sites is Huggins Island. Comprised of 225 acres and located at the mouth of the White Oak River, the island is important because its natural habitats and vegetation include a maritime swamp and lowland marsh that provide homes for coastal wildlife. So slow down a bit and experience the nostalgic atmosphere of Swansboro, a friendly and historic seaport with many stories to tell. For more information, visit www.tourswansboro.com. c

A trip to the Crystal Coast is not complete without experiencing the scenic seaport of Morehead City. The waterfront historic district is bustling with an exciting collection of marinas, fishing charters, tour boats and friendly faces. Promenades, rich history, restaurants, antiques, art galleries and unique shops are also to be found. Located just off Arendell Street, between 4th and 14th Streets, this area is a must-stop for any vacationer looking for a great meal, deal or adventure. Morehead City celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2007, paying homage to its long history as an important shipping and fishing port in North Carolina’s history. The town was established by a group of investors who sought to take advantage of the deep channel of Beaufort Inlet and build a rail to Goldsboro. The town was laid out in city blocks, much of which still exists today. Since then, Morehead City has become known as the “Summer Capital by the Sea” (minus a few

years during and following the Civil War when the town was occupied by Federal troops) and has been a popular vacation destination and fishing port. In fact, during the 1880s and 1890s, several fishermen moved their houses from Shackleford Banks to Morehead City between 10th and 15th Streets, becoming a crucial part of the fishing industry and economy of the town.
Today, Morehead City’s rich seafaring heritage is evident around every corner. The waterfront area offers many half-day, full-day and overnight charters, and people come from around the country to experience the top notch fishing. With the Gulf Stream only 30 miles offshore, anglers of all ages hook a wide variety of fish and bring them to the docks after 4 p.m. Watch as the fisherman bring in catches of grouper, tuna, snapper, mackerel, mahi-mahi and red drum and ice them down on the dock overlooking beautiful Sugarloaf Island. Evidence of the fruitful fishing industry can definitely be appreciated at the dinner table, and Morehead’s waterfront has long been famous for Continued on page 40>>>

As the second oldest town in North Carolina (in 2010 the town celebrated its 300th anniversary!), New Bern has a classic Main Street feel, ripe with historic buildings and landmarks. Named after Berne, Switzerland, New Bern was founded by Swiss and German immigrants in 1710 and has been a critical part of North Carolina history ever since. In the latter half of the 18th century, New Bern was the first permanent seat of the colonial government of the state. Then, after the Revolutionary War, the former palace of British governor William Tryon became the original state capital building of the independent state until the 1790s when it was destroyed by a fire. More than 150 years later, a new palace was built, reconstructed from

Enjoy a taste of the crystal coast
Waves crash in the background as the sun sets on yet another blissful day on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast. Friends gather on patios of restaurants and beach houses, sipping local wine and craft beer, reminiscing about past moments, sharing stories and laughter with one another. But when the food arrives, the busy chatter is reduced to a soft hush as eyes grow wide with delight, diners experience foods incomparable to anything they’ve tried before and newfound passions are created just from a single bite. The art of food has been an important tradition in North Carolina’s kitchens for generations, stemming from family dinners consisting of steamed seafood pots and evolving into culinary creations such as succulent shrimp cocktail perched on martini glasses, rich and creamy she-crab soup with sweet chunks of crab meat and freshly caught grouper served over wild rice. Local chefs understand that vacation is the one time of year that you can get away without having a care in the world. Because of this, they want to make food the last thing you worry about but the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Crystal Coast. crashing waves, or kick back dockside and enjoy happy hour as the sun melts away. Surrounded by oceans, bays and inlets, this part of North Carolina is blessed with a bounty of fresh seafood year round. Fishing has been a part of Crystal Coast heritage for more than 400 years, from the whaling industry in the 18th century, to the mullet and oyster trade in the 19th century, to the thriving modern seafood industry of today. Thousands of fishermen make a living off the surrounding waters, bringing in an assortment of fish, including mahi-mahi, grouper, tuna, striped bass and a variety of shellfish. Some of the most popular seafood dishes on the Crystal Coast are shrimp burgers (fried shrimp on a bun with coleslaw and sauce), clam chowder and anything made out of crab. Perhaps the most famous way to serve crabmeat is in the form of crab cakes. Every chef has their own recipe, and of course every chef claims that their recipe is “the best there is,” although few are willing to share the secret ingredient. Hard shell crabs are commonly found on restaurant menus served steamed and plated with small mallets to crack open the shells and pick out the sweet meat. From the first full moon in May until late summer, soft shell crabs are found in eateries prepared fried, broiled or sautéed. The fresh catch of the day is also served in an endless amount of ways—steamed, fried, blackened or “Calabash-style,” which means lightly breaded in seasoned cornmeal. Area chefs use their creative license to create delicious dishes you could never dream up on your own, combining seafood and fresh ingredients from local farms.
However, the most famous dish in the Tar Heel state has to be Carolina barbecue. First, understand that the word “barbecue” and the word “grilling” are not synonymous, and in this neck of the woods, barbecue means pork; not chicken or beef. Carolina barbecue is a combination of pork, heat and smoke that makes for a tender, rich, succulent meat that is chopped and usually paired with a thin vinegar sauce. There are some varieties in the way barbecue is cooked, but nobody is more proud of their barbecue than North Carolinians. You’ll be delighted by the dining options on the Crystal Coast, from casual family restaurants to upscale eateries. But no matter where you eat, rest assured you’ll get a side of that good oldfashioned Southern charm with every meal.

Homegrown, Brewed and Fermented Nothing goes with a pot of freshly steamed crabs like an ice cold beer or a chilled glass of wine, especially if the sips were crafted locally. Just as the culinary scene in North Carolina has taken visitors on a journey of spectacular eats, the local crafts of fermenting grapes and brewing beer are steadily rising to the top of the popularity scales, and they’re nowhere near stopping. The reason visitors and locals alike have such a passion for local beer and wines is because they want to experience everything about the Crystal Coast in its truest sense. Imported beverages can be found anywhere; it’s the ones made right nearby that leave folks longing for a taste and consistently craving more. Some of the best local brews can be found at Harrika’s Brew Haus, named one of the 2013 Top 100 Beer Bars in the USA by Draft Magazine. With more than 400 beer kegs, more than 750 bottled beers and a unique selection on tap daily, Harrika’s truly has a brew for all possible types of beer lovers. The s ar brewery also offers 75 varieties of tea and freshly brewed coffee, as well as an eclectic assortment of gift 3 B 1 r A -20 items, including pottery, local honey, beer bread and retro prints. Beer lovers will be especially delighted to join Island Grille ra 0+ mix “ —D 75 on the second Sunday of every month for a Beer Luncheon—four delectable courses paired with four craft brews. With such a boundless option of prestigious brews and a commitment to supporting local brewers it’s no wonder Island Grille is accustomed to serving top-notch guests such as Curtis Strange or 252-354-7911 legendary world class anglers. However, once you’ve visited the restaurant, you’ll understand that every Swansboro, NC www.teaandbeer.com guest is treated as VIP. How about a side of magnificent sunset with your icy beverage? McCurdy’s Restaurant & Deck is the only place in Atlantic Beach that boasts unmatched views of the setting sun where diners gather on the covered patio. Many seafood and pasta dishes found here are crafted from the freshest ingredients that North Carolina’s bounty has to offer, and these local treats are best accompanied by a chilled brew. With the largest beer selection on the island, you won’t TM have trouble choosing a stout, ale, porter or wheat that’s perfectly paired with ® your straight-from-the-docks seafood. Of course beer isn’t the only beverage that combines nicely with seafood. North Carolina’s thriving wine industry is giving visitors even more of a reason to want to taste the fruits of labor from the many grape growers and vintners throughout the region. Muscadine is a popular grape for this region that produces a sweet, dessertstyle wine. When made correctly, muscadine wine retains a refreshing and often nostalgic taste of the grape itself. However, many vineyards have chosen to plant the classic wine grapes of California and Europe—cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc, syrah and zinfandel. If time permits, set aside an afternoon to visit some of these wineries in person. You’ll see the pristine rows of grapevines and charming atmosphere that has such a genuine impact on the finished products. However if you’d like to choose from bottles and bottles of local and regional wines all in one place, visit Cru Wine Bar & The Wine Store in Beaufort. Here you’ll find a copious choosing of wine to enjoy during your vacation (or when you get home!), and you can also relax with a glass of wine or a mixed cocktail at the bar as you nosh on an Dine in, Carry Out appetizer or specialty sandwich. While you’re there, it’s absolutely imperative Or Delivery that you taste the Escazu artisan chocolates made right in North Carolina, just another reason why the state’s endless bounty of edible and drinkable delights will always leave you lusting for more. c

Thanks to the Carteret Catch logo, you can be guaranteed to dine on only the freshest of catches! Look for the “Carteret Catch” logo at area restaurants to guarantee the freshest seafood, straight from Crystal Coast waters. real estate
coming home to the coast
Owning a house on the Crystal Coast is easier than you might think, and now is the perfect time to buy The crashing waves, the pristine beaches, the salty breeze wafting from the water—what’s not to love about this place? Perhaps you feel so at home during your stay that you’re considering making the Crystal Coast a permanent home or possibly a secondary one. Buying a home here is easier than you may think—and the perks are better than you’d ever imagine. Gail Weldon, managing broker for Emerald Isle Realty, explains that there are many reasons people choose to purchase real estate on the Crystal Coast—and specifically on Emerald Isle. “Most of my customers love it here because of the family beach atmosphere,” she explains. The desirable ambiance of the oceanic scene coupled with well-planned communities create fun ways for families to enjoy the area together, whether they’re visiting the aquarium, exploring the bike trails and sidewalks or experiencing the pristine waters through boating and fishing. The first pleasant surprise that most homebuyers encounter is the affordable aspect of purchasing a home on the Crystal Coast. Those who plan to finance their home will be delighted to learn that interest rates have been at an all-time low for several years. Weldon says that the prices of houses are very reasonable right now, and the inventory selection is fantastic, meaning that no matter what type of house you’re looking for, there’s a perfect one for you. Of course most people are hoping to snag a home that features immaculate views of the wellkept beaches and crashing waves, and there are plenty of these options available. Others are satisfied with simply being a short distance from the beach. One thing that most buyers have in common is that they’re looking to achieve a coastal Carolina cottage feel with updated amenities and technology. Along with being an affordable purchase, many Crystal Coast homebuyers have discovered that purchasing real estate is a profitable investment, especially if you decide to rent it to out-of-towners. Weldon estimates that the majority of homebuy-
ers she works with are in the market for a second home or a rental investment, and with the Crystal Coast’s successful tourism industry, it’s likely that your house could be rented for much of the year. However, you’ll want to save a few weeks for yourself and your family to enjoy a blissful vacation in the comfort of your very own home. Purchasing a home—even if it’s a secondary home—is a big decision, so it’s important to feel comfortable with your real estate agent and communicate your preferences when discussing
various housing options. This way you’ll ensure that the house you choose is the perfect one for you. Emerald Isle Realty is a family-owned agency that has been in business for 50 years. Their small staff of six agents is focused on customer service and welcoming people into the friendly expanses of coastal beauty that they call home. “We are geared to helping our customers find their little piece of heaven,” Weldon says. “We build relationships, traditions and family memories.” c

Ranging from a links style to the more traditional style, golfers will be able to test their skills on all kinds of golf courses. Located just south of Jacksonville off Highway 17, Bear Trail Golf offers golfers a challenge that is worth going back for. Lakes, marshes, tall pines and hardwoods provide the backdrop for an entertaining and challenging day of golf. Offering multiple sets of tees, the course offers golfers of all levels the opportunity to enjoy their day at Bear Trail. A great example is the beautiful par three 17th hole. Your choice of tees will offer a variety of 125 yards up to a healthy 175 yards. Your tee shot requires a carry over the lake that protects the front of the green. After you have navigated the water you are now faced with a green sloping from back to front placing even more importance on your club selection. Pick your tees, choose your club and hit your shot— all part of a great hole and the golfing experience that is Bear Trail Golf. In Cape Carteret you will find Star Hill Golf Club. This 27-hole facility offers up a rolling terrain with a good blend of reasonable and difficult holes that will challenge all golfers. With a policy of 90 degrees for carts Star Hill is a popular spot for golfers. Good first and second shots will find you putting on bent grass greens. Maintained year round, the greens can offer some difficult pin positions and become the great equalizer in a round of golf. Play the Lakes side, and you will come to Hole #7. This is a par five hole that can be reached in two if the winds are blowing in your favor. However, place your approach shot on the wrong side of the pin and a downhill breaking putt might prove to be more difficult than desired.

golf guide For all the nuances of playing this hole, the entertainment on this hole reaches its peak when a plane lands on the airstrip located along side the hole. Having a plane drop from the sky with its engines running while you are anxiously standing over a putt that will win the hole is an experience that only Star Hill can offer. West of Morehead City only 15 to 20 minutes from the beach is Brandywine Bay Golf Club. Entrances located on Highway 70 and Highway 24 help make the course convenient to all parts of the beach. Located within the Brandywine neighborhood the golf course is a shot maker’s delight. A mixture of tree lined fairways, natural waste areas and hazards makes choos-
ing the proper club and staying within yourself critical. Having multiple sets of tees, the course can be stretched from 4600 yards to 6300 yards. Recently renovated greens offer golfers the opportunity to test their golfing skills on TifEagle greens. Tee it up on the Par 5 hole number 10, and you will get to play the challenge that is a part of Brandywine. Out of bounds on the right side forces you to favor the left side of the fairway with your tee shot. The left side of the hole is guarded by a hazard that runs the length of the hole. The hazard becomes more prominent as you plan your second shot with a body of water that protrudes out into your second landing area. After safely navigating the second shot you are faced with a short shot into a green sloping from front to back and protected by a bunker in the front. Birdie the hole, and you will probably be one up on your competition. Take the challenge and see where your game stands. Don’t forget to pack your clubs, and plan a golf outing as part of your next vacation to the Crystal Coast. c

Welcome to the Crystal Coast and its amazing year-round fishery that offers numerous opportunities from the shallow backwater bays to the clear blue Gulf Stream. First-timers and beginners may want to start at one of the many local marinas or tackle shops. These shops are filled with friendly people and valuable advice that make getting some local info on charters, bait, and techniques easy. You don’t even need a boat to get started as there are many productive shore fishing opportunities along the Crystal Coast. Surf fishing from the beach is always a good option, and there is never a cover charge. You can even take a ferry to one of the State Park islands such as Hammock’s Beach for some truly unspoiled surf fishing. During the spring, summer and fall, surf-casters are hooking up with red drum, black drum, spots, bluefish, sea mullet, Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, grey trout and flounder. A standard bottom rig with cut shrimp will always get bites, but digging up some of the sand fleas scurrying underfoot or catching some small baitfish with a cast-net can give anglers the upper hand. If the beach is too crowded or you just prefer to stay dry, hop onto one the area’s fishing piers to chase trout, flounder, drum, bluefish, spots and mackerel. Most piers can rent out rods and reels, and they will always have bait, tackle and an up-to-date fishing report. Whether you hire a guide or take your own boat, you need to venture to the inland waters of the Crystal Coast for some outstanding light tackle fishing. Our area has several free public boat ramps, and most all of them are in excellent shape. Winter is actually a great time to be on the water. Warmer days can get the red drum and speckled trout feeding hard in the muddy creeks and rivers. Fishing live and scented baits is the key to success. In the spring the red drum and speckled trout will begin to ease their way out of the rivers and estuaries toward the sound. The waters in the salt marshes are clean and clear during the spring, making sight fishing for schooling redfish a popu-
lar activity. Speckled and grey trout can be found in the creeks and deep holes and will be biting live minnows and a variety of artificial baits. During the summer, the Crystal Coast is an inshore fisherman’s paradise. Flounder, red drum, black drum, trout, sheepshead and ladyfish can all be caught inshore in the sounds, inlets and waterways. As fall approaches, most of these fish stay in the area and fatten up for the winter. This is also when the famous Crystal Coast spot run kicks into gear. Spots are great for kids and first-time fishermen, but most hardcore fishermen and captains still love the tradition of getting a cooler full. The spots make their run down the beach and through the main waterways, so they are easy to find, and they will eat just about any piece of bait you offer up, especially shrimp and bloodworms on a bottom rig. Spots fry up great, making a delicious treat that is easy to catch. The Crystal Coast also offers challenges for even the most experienced anglers and outdoorsmen. With many deep water marinas and offshore charter boats, you can have instant access to the offshore waters of the Atlantic Ocean. There are year-round opportunities for excellent fishing for big yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahi mahi, sailfish and marlin in the Gulf Stream. Closer to the beach

there are king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, bonita, grouper, snapper, black sea bass and triggerfish prowling on the near shore reefs, waiting to take your line. For the ultimate challenge, Giant bluefin Tuna from 100 to 800 pounds will be lumbering along the Crystal Coast waiting to either make your day or hurt your feelings during the winter. If you want in on the action but don’t have your own boat, there are many local fishing guides and charter boats that can get you on the open water for some world-class fishing. These knowledgeable captains put clients on fish yearround both inshore and offshore. Depending on the time of year, the charter option can put you and your family or friends on any of North Carolina’s different species both inshore and offshore. Even anglers with their own boat can always benefit from the tips and tactics learned by taking a charter and applying them to their personal fishing trips. It’s really no wonder why the Crystal Coast has found a place in so many angler’s hearts. There are so many options and species to catch in Eastern North Carolina. When you add to it the fact that many of these fish can be caught here year-round in a beautiful, unspoiled environment, it is easy to see why the Crystal Coast is a premier saltwater fishing destination! c

small change can equal
big
difference An Emerald Isle based nonprofit organization aims to fund clean drinking water projects around the world—and all they’re asking for is your spare change Restaurants in America have one major thing in common with remote villages in the developing world: a dependence on clean water. The major difference is that while clean water is readily available for our use here, 1 billion people around the world lack access. As a result, a child dies from a water-related illness every 15 seconds. When local restaurant owner Chris Johns made this startling discovery, he decided to make a difference. In January 2010 he started a nonprofit organization, QH2O, committed to providing clean drinking water around the world. Area restaurants are partnering together and giving each guest the opportunity to give one quarter—yes, just 25 cents—to the clean water cause. 100% of each quarter received goes directly into funding a clean water project.
Already, through quarters, the organization has funded 10 wells in countries like Tanzania, Uganda and India, but there’s still a lot of great work to be done. Want to be part of the solution? Just dine at one of our partner restaurants and tell your server you want to participate. The quarters can be added directly to your bill. Life is valuable, and water is life, but the remarkable thing is that this investment costs us so little. All too often we throw pennies into fountains, dimes into parking meters and quarters into gumball machines without thinking twice. QH2O is collecting small change and making a major difference in the lives of thousands. To learn more about QH2O, visit www.QH2O.org 2013/2014 | Crystal Coast | 59
