The NC Aquarium Look a dinosaur in the eye and hear it roar – the Aquarium provides the time machine! Step out to the Marsh Boardwalk during the summer of 2014 and let your imagination and Dinosaur Adventure take you back millions of years. The fierce Allosaurus, the long-necked Apatosaurus and other bygone beasts seemingly come to life as you approach. Watch out for the Dilophosaurus – sometimes it spits. And don’t let the Tyrannosaurus Rex out front scare you. It has gotten itself stuck. Climb aboard for a great photo op! Dinosaur Adventure is free with admission, and available in late May to early September only. Way-back Wednesdays also take a look into the prehistoric past. Programs, activities and displays weekly spotlight creatures that have changed little over the ages. Wayback Wednesdays, free with admission, run June 11 – Aug. 6. Look for other exhibits, displays and activities about the living links to ancient animals. Every day at the Aquarium, enjoy gallons of family fun and a variety of other programs free
at Pine Knoll Shores with admission – dive shows, animal feedings, animal encounters – even an environmental quiz game with cool prizes. Watch river otters frolic during otter programs four days a week. Shark Week July 27 – Aug. 2 brings programs and activities to spotlight the top predators of the seas. Winging It: Birds in Flight features North Carolina’s raptors and waterbirds in an educational presentation that also is packed with family fun. All the birds in the show have injuries or conditions that prevent them from being released into the wild. The program runs daily at 1 p.m. Tickets are $4 in addition to admission. Surfing, stand-up paddle-boarding, kayak excursions or other outdoor adventures are offered daily in the summer for additional fees. For hot or rainy days, extend your Aquarium visit with a variety of specialized behind-the-scenes tour. Check the website for the full schedule and be sure to sign up ahead of time. Advance registration is required for all fee-based programs. The activities schedules change and the dinosaurs go extinct in September,
but the fun keeps going. The Aquarium is open year-round. Take in the historic sights, beautiful gardens and waterfront views on a Historic Trolley Tour. The historic town of Beaufort, incorporated in 1722, is in fact the third oldest town in North Carolina and features many Civil War as well as colonial highlights in its historic district. A tour of the waterfront town showcases its oak-lined streets, Victorian homes and quaint atmosphere and is one of the best ways to capture the essence of days gone by. Just three miles off the coast of Beaufort are remnants of one of the region’s most famous visitors, Blackbeard the pirate. At the bottom of the sea lies Blackbeard’s infamous ship, Queen Anne’s Revenge. The sunken seacraft was discovered in 1996; since then, archeologists have recovered artifacts from the watery grave, and they are now on display at the North Carolina Maritime Museum in downtown Beaufort. Deep diving is one of the most popular activities for visitors and locals due to the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and plentitude of wrecks to explore. In fact, there are more than 2,000 vessels underwater. And with water as warm and clear as Caribbean seas, diving at the Crystal Coast is an experience like no other. There are hundreds of other ways to explore the multiple waterways surrounding the Crystal
Coast. With the longest fishing season on the Atlantic Coast, anglers can enjoy year-round success on the rod. Multiple species pass through these waters, all of which can be found grilled, steamed, blackened and fried at area restaurants. Experience wild horses, hiking (flip-flops and bare feet not recommended), wildlife and two nature trails through the Cedar Maritime Forrest. Easiest way to see the Wild Mustangs. $10 adult, $5 children. BIRD SHOALS offers more for the beach combers and those looking for a quiet secret place to just “get away.” On the island, you will find around 2 1/2 miles of pristine beaches, and a great view of the Beaufort Inlet. This is also a great spot for finding sand dollars and smaller shells. There are shallow protected swimming areas, excellent for swimming and snorkeling opportunities. Bird Shoals connects to Carrot Island by a sandbar at low tide. $13 adult, $7 children. SAND DOLLAR ISLAND is only accessible at Low Tide. With its shallow tidal pools, that surround the sandbar, it offers the best hunting grounds for sand dollars. This sandbar is also great for a nice swimming environment, and excellent snorkeling. This island is great for the true adventurer. But remember, this trip is planned according to the tides! Take this fully narrated cruise and see the entire historic Beaufort waterfront, and the entire Rachel Carson Reserve while searching for the wild horses. As part of the Rachel Carson estuary, you will see the 3 mile island that is Carrot Island and Bird Shoal. You will see at low tide, the horses cross from one island to the next, moving on to pastures located on Bird Shoals. The quintessential beach community, Atlantic Beach, expertly balances low-key, residential areas and bustling beachfront entertainment. Part of the Crystal Coast, this area is rich in beauty, history and activities to satisfy all ages. As one of the oldest towns on the Bogue Banks, Atlantic Beach sprouted up from a beach pavilion built in the late 1800s to provide oceanfront entertainment for tourists staying across the sound in Morehead City. Over a century ago, Bogue Banks became home to one of the first bathing pavilions in order to accommodate guests of the New Morehead City Hotel who were accustomed to bathing in the ocean. Word spread, patrons flocked to the area, and the Atlantic Beach resort was formed. By the 1920s, and after several business deals, a new Atlantic Beach opened in an area known as the “Circle” on Bogue Banks. This new area boasted two bathhouses—one for men and one for women—and quickly prospered with the addition of a bridge that connected Atlantic Beach to the mainland. During the Great Depression, the Atlantic Beach property encountered several setbacks but was eventually held by the Manufacturers Bank and Trust Co. of New York. With the prospect of a thriving resort area in mind, the Atlantic Beach and Bridge Company was created to rebuild the resort and operate the toll bridge. In 1930, the beach and resort reopened for business. A year later, Newman Willis moved to Atlantic Beach with his wife and became the first permanent resident as well as the town’s first mayor. In just a few more short years, the area was marked out for streets, and property lots were sold. More structures followed as well as the construction of the boardwalk along the oceanfront. Today, the pavilion no longer exists, but the site on which it stood is now part of the Atlantic Beach Circle, a reference point for locals and visitors alike. Souvenir shops, a small boardwalk, restaurants and more keep the Circle a popular social spot for both teenagers and families.

Fort Macon State Park Witness history in action at the state’s second most visited park Fort Macon State Park, North Carolina’s third smallest yet second most visited state park, dates back to 1756 when Fort Dobbs, the first structure, was begun but never completed. While it may not be a target in modern times, North Carolina’s coastal region was highly vulnerable to attack in the 18th and 19th centuries. Blackbeard and other infamous pirates are said to have sailed through the Beaufort Inlet, and his ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, is thought to have been discovered in the shallow waters of the Atlantic Ocean off the park’s coast. Successive wars with Spain, France and Great Britain prompted North Carolina leaders to develop coastal defense points and begin the
construction of military forts. Located in Beaufort, Fort Dobbs was constructed to provide defense on the edge of the western frontier during the French and Indian War. However, its incompletion left the Topsail inlet undefended during the American Revolution. The harbor remained defenseless until the construction of Fort Hampton, a small brick masonry built on the tip of the Bogue Banks in 1809. It was used for more than a decade before it was washed into the inlet by a hurricane in 1825. Construction of Fort Macon began in 1826 and lasted eight years. The five-sided brick and stone fort was named after U.S. Senator Nathaniel Macon who procured the funds to

atlantic beach build the facility. It was designed by Brig. Gen. Simon Bernard and built by the US Army Corp of Engineers. Its rooms are enclosed by outer walls that are 4.5 feet thick. The total cost of the fort was $463,790. During the Civil War, North Carolina seized the fort from Union Troops but was later attacked and reclaimed it in 1862. The fort was a coaling station for navy ships for the duration of the war. From 1867 until 1876 the fort was used as a civil and military prison. It was garrisoned by state troops in 1898 for the Spanish-American War, and by 1903 the US Army had completely abandoned the Fort. In 1923, the fort and surrounding reservation was sold for $1 to the state of North Carolina to be used as a public park. The Civilian Conservation Corps restored the fort between 1934–35 and established recreational facilities. Fort Macon State Park opened in May 1936 as North Carolina’s first functioning state park. The fort was again occupied by the US Army from December 1941 until November 1944 to protect numerous nearby facilities. During the occupation, some unsuspecting soldiers mistook cannonballs for solid iron shot and rolled them into fireplaces and andirons. The exploding powderfilled balls, or “last shot of the Civil War,” killed two men and injured several others. The state park, located on 389 acres on the eastern end of the Bogue Banks, underwent a four-and-a-half year renovation in 2003. In addition to extensive preservation and stabilization work done during the course of the project, a new museum facility was built. It consists of 26 rooms (casemates) of exhibits dedicated to the 170-year history of the fort. Visitors can admire the fort’s powder magazines, counterfire rooms with cannon emplacements and the wide moat that could be flooded to protect the fort during a siege. The fort features several original and replica cannons. Explore the quarters to see how officers and soldiers lived. There is much more to the park than the new museum. The fort is surrounded by three bodies of water—the Bogue Sound, Beaufort Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean. The area is home to undisturbed natural beauty and offers activities such as swimming, fishing, picnicking, shelling, hiking and bird watching. Regularly scheduled education and interpretive programs about the fort take place from April 15 until Oct. 30. Join a walking tour or conduct your own with a guide available in the bookstore. Historic reenactments are often held on the fort’s inner court of parade ground. Fort Macon State Park is open daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and is closed on Christmas Day. AR Artifacts from a famous ship bring Blackbeard’s legend to life

You’ve likely heard stories of the famous pirate, Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard. You may even be familiar with legends about his ship, Queen Anne’s Revenge, and how Blackbeard and his crew utilized the vessel for stealing precious treasure. What you may not realize is that during your visit to Beaufort, you can view actual artifacts taken from the ship, turning stories into truths and legends into reality. Blackbeard and his crew have come to life again, and you’ve come to the only place in the world that could make it happen. Before Blackbeard overtook the ship, its name was La Concorde, and it was used in slave trading expeditions. On its final voyage before being captured, La Concorde left Nantes, France on March 24, 1717. The 200-ton ship had 16
cannons and a crew of 75. The ship’s captain and officers took on 516 captive Africans and 20 pounds of gold dust before journeying eight weeks across the Atlantic. By the time they reached the New World, they had lost 61 slaves and 16 crewmen. Only 100 miles from Martinique, La Concorde met Blackbeard and his crew, traveling aboard two sailboats—one with 120 men and 12 cannons and the other with 30 men and eight cannons. With some of their crew reduced by fatalities and others ill from scurvy and dysentery, the French were powerless to resist, and so they surrendered the ship to Blackbeard. The pirate made La Concorde his flagship, adding cannons and renaming it Queen Anne’s Revenge. Blackbeard sailed the Caribbean, taking treasures and adding to his fleet. He took the ship to various places, including St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Nevis, Antigua, Puerto Rico, Samana Bay in Hispaniola (Dominican Republic), Turneffe Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba and the Bahamas. In May 1718, the pirates arrived at Charleston, South Carolina, where they blockaded the port for nearly a week. They seized several ships attempting to enter or leave the port and kept the crew and passengers of one ship as prisoners. The crew was held hostage until Blackbeard received his ransom, a chest of medicine.

After leaving Charleston, Blackbeard’s fleet attempted to enter Old Topsail Inlet, now known as Beaufort Inlet. It was then that Blackbeard lost Queen Anne’s Revenge when it ran aground. It has been speculated that the pirate intentionally grounded his ship in order to break up the company, which had grown to more than 300 pirates. For more than 270 years, the ship was hidden by water and sand. In 1996, Intersal, Inc., discovered the shipwreck. Since then, more than 250,000 artifacts have been recovered from the ship. The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort became the official repository for these artifacts and opened an interactive and permanent exhibit in 2011 so that the public may have the privilege of seeing these priceless artifacts up close. Among the first items to be collected from the site were a bronze bell dated 1705, a lead cannon apron, an English blunderbuss barrel and two cannonballs, all dating to the 18th century. Also recovered were gold dust, lead fragments, glass beads, iron weapons and the ship’s hull remnants. The latest recovery came in October 2013 when scientists from the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources discovered five cannons from the ship. The team, working with the Coast Guard, brought the 2,000- and 3,000-pound cannons to the surface, making a total of 20 cannons to have been salvaged from the ship. Each of the guns once fired 6-pound cannonballs. All artifacts recovered undergo conservation at

through a lengthy process of cleaning, desalination, consolidation, drying and analysis before they’re publically displayed and interpreted. Aside from viewing these precious artifacts, visitors to the museum will learn how Blackbeard became a pirate and how North Carolina’s economy, geography and politics of the time created a “perfect storm” for piracy. Visitors can also view the weapons a pirate ship would likely carry and see how nautical archaeologists have mapped out the underwater site. There’s an opportunity to learn about the fascinating conservation methods necessary to put these fragile artifacts on display. The exhibit also answers important questions that have been brought up about through the years: Were the pirates and government in cahoots? How do we know this wreck is actually the Queen Anne’s Revenge? And finally, one common question that everyone wants to know: Where is the treasure? Emerald Isle Gem of the Crystal Coast Named after its beautifully lush maritime forests, Emerald Isle is a laid-back beach community comprised of unspoiled beaches, pristine forests, quaint beach cottages and loads of activities for the whole family. emerald isle an investment. He saw the success of neighboring Atlantic Beach and imagined Emerald Isle expanding to a resort of the same caliber. However, Fort couldn’t secure enough support to build a bridge, and his dream of a resort community was abandoned. After Fort’s death, the land was inherited by his daughter Anita Fort Maulik, who ultimately sold the property to a group of investors from Southeastern North Carolina. The land, not yet known as Emerald Isle, was purchased for $350,000, the largest amount in Carteret County history at the time. The seven investors then divided the land into 54 blocks, each a little more than 1,000 feet wide, and development was underway. Ferry service began in 1960, connecting the mainland to the beaches and increasing the number of visitors to the budding coastal village. When the Cameron Langston Bridge was built in 1971, development continued, bringing in more beach rentals, attractions and restaurants to the family-oriented beach community. Today, Emerald Isle is abuzz during the summer and peacefully serene throughout the rest of the year. While more than 3,500 people are lucky enough to call the town home, in the summer, the population quadruples as families flock to the Bogue Banks for the ultimate beach vacation. <<< Continued from page 32 Both quaint and bustling, Beaufort is a small North Carolina port town but with enough attractions, amenities and activities to rival any seaside destination, earning it the title of “Coolest Small Town in America” by Budget Travel Magazine for 2012. Settled in 1709, Beaufort is North Carolina’s third oldest town. Originally inhabited by the Coree Indians in their village, Cwarioc, meaning “fish town,” Beaufort was then inhabited by French Hugenots and eventually settled by the British in 1709. In 1713, Robert Turner, who held the original land grant for 200 acres, laid out the town and named the streets just as they are today. The town was named in honor of Turner’s friend Henry Somerset, Duke of Beaufort, and was incorporated in 1722. By the late 18th century, Beaufort was becoming an active seaport. Inhabited by sailors, privateers, fisherman, soldiers and planters, it was a diverse community with a common thread—the sea. While Beaufort’s active sea trade allowed it to be connected with seaports thousands of miles away, its geography kept it isolated from the interior of the state. This isolation has helped the town retain its historic appearance. As the seaport became active so did the lingering pirates, one in particular you may have heard

of—Edward Teach a.k.a. Blackbeard. He and his crew would come into the Pamlico Sound to visit and resupply, and the Beaufort harbor became their comfortable place for rest and rejuvenation. Most were appalled that these pirates were allowed to roam the land freely and were tolerated by government officials. According to popular belief, Blackbeard was a frequent visitor to Core Sound, perhaps residing at the Hammock House when in the neighborhood. Legend has it that he would anchor his ship in the creek, row to the house and tie up on the porch post. Other stories depict Blackbeard burying treasure in the Hammock House yard, although none has been found to this day. Artifacts from Blackbeard’s famous flagship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge (which ran aground on a sandbar near Beaufort) can be found at the NC Maritime Museum. In the 20th century, Beaufort continued to grow. There were spurts of building and great influxes of people moving to the area, followed by quiet lulls for the town. In the early 1900s, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church School was revitalized after a more than 30-year lapse in teaching. In 1906, the railroad came across the way from Morehead City and started making regular visits to Beaufort. In 1907, the railroad station on Broad Street was built, and a new, large brick courthouse was built on the square. Still standing today are the homes of Beaufort’s early sea captains, seafarers, and merchants. Beaufort boasts more than 150 homes in the Historic District (which is on the National Register of Historic Places) that are more than a century old and several private residences that are more than 200 years old. In many of these homes, you will see the influence of the West Indies architecture brought to Beaufort from generations of sea trade. The Beaufort Historical Association, celebrating its 54th Anniversary this year, owns and operates the Beaufort Historic Site, which depicts 18th and 19th century life in coastal Carolina. The twoacre site is located in the heart of the Beaufort’s National Registered Historic District and includes 11 buildings, nine of which are historic and six authentically restored, ranging from a 1778 primitive cottage to the apothecary shop and doctor’s office of 1859. The Site also houses the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery, the oldest gallery in Carteret County located in the circa 1732 Rustell House, which showcases and sells juried artwork by more than 100 local and regional artists. Tours of the historic buildings as well as the Old Burying Grounds are offered on a daily basis, as well as a narrated tour of the town aboard a 1967 open-top doubledecker bus. morehead city Carolina’s history. The town was established by a group of investors who sought to take advantage of the deep channel of Beaufort Inlet and build a rail to Goldsboro. The town was laid out in city blocks, much of which still exists today. Since then, Morehead City has become known as the “Summer Capital by the Sea” (minus a few years during and following the Civil War when the town was occupied by Federal troops) and has been a popular vacation destination and fishing port. In fact, during the 1880s and 1890s, several fishermen moved their houses from Shackleford Banks to Morehead City between 10th and 15th Streets, becoming a crucial part of the fishing industry and economy of the town.

Swansboro A historic waterfront with stories to tell
Perched along the shores of the White Oak River, Swansboro hints of a simpler time in North Carolina’s past. At more than 200 years old, the historic waterfront haven rests on rolling hills, looking over the scenic river. Built on the remains of an Algonquian Indian village, Swansboro traces its beginnings to the 1730s, when Jonathan and Grace Green moved south from Falmouth, Massachusetts and settled here. Swansborough, as it was originally known, was incorporated in 1783, making it the oldest town in Onslow County. Named after Samuel Swann, prominent in North Carolina’s pre-Revolutionary history as Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives, the town became an established seaport in 1786. Today, Swansboro is known as a quiet and unique waterfront town, with a vibrant arts community and many special events throughout the year. In fact, the oldest festival in North Carolina, the Mullet Festival, takes place here the second Saturday in October. Business showcases, oyster roasts, open houses, arts festivals and firework displays bring people from around the area to this small town year round. Opportunities for recreation abound, too. Vacationers are invited to use the local wildlife boat access ramp. Explore the White Oak River by canoe or kayak, or rent a boat for an exciting fishing charter. Cyclists will love the 25-mile Swansboro Bicentennial Bicycle Trail, which travels along the Croatan National Forest and Cedar Point Recreational Area. Venture by ferry or private boat to Hammock’s Beach State Park on Bear Island to experience Onslow County’s coastal shores in a rustic setting. Bear Island served as an Indian hideout in the Tuscarora Wars of 1711 and 1713.

As the second oldest town in North Carolina (in 2010 the town celebrated its 300th anniversary!), New Bern has a classic Main Street feel, ripe with historic buildings and landmarks. Named after Berne, Switzerland, New Bern was founded by Swiss and German immigrants in 1710 and has been a critical part of North Carolina history ever since. In the latter half of the 18th century, New Bern was the first permanent seat of the colonial government of the state. Then, after the Revolutionary War, the former palace of British governor William Tryon became the original state capital building of the independent state until the 1790s when it was destroyed by a fire. More than 150 years later, a new palace was built, reconstructed from the original drawings and plans. A visit to the historic building and beautiful gardens or a trip to the newly built North Carolina History Education Center is a great way to start off a day exploring New Bern. Learn more about the town’s fascinating past on a walking, carriage or trolley tour through the historic downtown area. Successful merchants and sea captains built many beautiful homes in the town, and the downtown buildings have been preserved beautifully. coastal cuisine While the big season for farmers’ markets lies between the beginning of May and Labor Day, a few of the more well-known farmers’ markets are open all year-round and allow you to sample all sorts of local treats that burst onto the scene well after summertime. Some of the favorites here are sweet potatoes, acorn and butternut squash, pumpkin, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, collards, kale and wild mushrooms. Let’s not forget the main attraction that draws folks from all around to North Carolina’s shores: the fresh bounty of seafood. Fishing has been a part of Crystal Coast heritage for more than 400 years, from the whaling industry in the 18th century, to the mullet and oyster trade in the 19th century, to the thriving modern seafood industry of today. During various parts of the year, seafood markets will supply locally caught offerings of shrimp, clams, oysters, scallops, soft shell crabs and a rich assortment of fish including rockfish, sea bass, rainbow trout, tuna, mahi-mahi, snapper, bass, flounder, swordfish, tilapia and sturgeon, just to name a few. During your visit to the Crystal Coast you can stock up on local veggies, fresh fruits and seafood to enjoy at home, or you can prepare an extraordinary meal using these ingredients inside your beach home. Another fantastic option is to visit a restaurant that features these local gems on their menu and see what the culinary masters can whip up. Some of the most popular seafood dishes you’ll find on restaurant menus are shrimp burgers (fried
shrimp on a bun with coleslaw and sauce), clam chowder and anything made out of crab. Perhaps the most famous way to serve crabmeat is in the form of crab cakes. Every chef has their own recipe, and of course every chef claims that their recipe is “the best there is,” although few are willing to share the secret ingredient. Hard shell crabs are commonly found on restaurant menus served steamed and plated with small mallets to crack open the shells and pick out the sweet meat. From the first full moon in May until late summer, soft shell crabs are found in eateries prepared fried, broiled or sautéed. The fresh catch of the day is also served in an endless amount of ways—steamed, fried, blackened or “Calabash-style,” which means lightly breaded in seasoned cornmeal. Area chefs use their creative license to create delicious dishes you could never dream up on your own, combining seafood and fresh ingredients from local farms. However, the most famous dish in the Tar Heel state has to be Carolina barbecue. First, understand that the word “barbecue” and the word “grilling” are not synonymous, and in this neck of the woods, barbecue means pork; not chicken or beef. Carolina

Here are several tips for staying healthy and beautiful during your stay in Crystal Coast: • Get a spray tan at a local spa or try one of the many self-tanning lotions on the market. However you fake it, the all-over bronzed look may keep you from spending too many hours in the sun trying to get darker. • Use a waterproof sun block with an SPF of at least 30. (Dermatologists recommend the daily use of sunscreen to prevent skin damage, early aging and skin cancer.) • Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outside. Pay special attention to the nose, ears, shoulders, tops of the feet and collarbone. • Reapply sunscreen often—at least every two hours. And remember to reapply after swimming or excessive sweating. • Try to get some shade sometime between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. This is when UV rays are the strongest and can cause the most damage. Sit under an umbrella or go inside to grab some lunch to give your skin a break. • Don’t forget about your lips! They are very prone to burning, so apply lip balm with SPF often throughout the day. • Those with thin or thinning hair should pay serious attention to their scalp and tops of their heads. Either wear a hat or apply sunscreen to the scalp. • Longer locks can also be protected from the sun and salty water by applying conditioner before swimming, using a protective hair spray and by wearing a hat. • Wear UV protective sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and keep yourself from squinting, which causes deeper wrinkles if done excessively. • If you’re spending the day at the pool, always rinse off after swimming. Chlorine dries out the skin and can cause nightmares for the hair. • Take extra caution when you are on the beach. Sand and water reflect the sun’s rays, increasing your chances of sunburn. • After a long day in the sun, apply moisturizer with aloe. This will help soothe and hydrate the skin. c

The Crystal Coast is home to some of North Carolina’s most exciting and diverse saltwater fishing opportunities. If you’re feeling the call of the ocean, then head out off the beach for worldclass fishing for cobia, mackerel, mahi, tuna, billfish, grouper and more. If inshore fishing is your pursuit, you can stay in the calm waters of the sound and estuary rivers and chase down flounder, redfish, trout, sheepshead, spots and bluefish for light-tackle action that is second to none in the Carolinas. Add to it the fact that many of these fish can be caught here year-round in a beautiful, unspoiled environment, and it is easy to see why the Crystal Coast is a premier saltwater fishing destination. There are several top notch marinas and tackle shops in our area, and they are great places to find friendly people willing to provide some local information on what’s biting and the best baits and techniques to use. Be sure to grab your recreational fishing license while you’re there too. You will need one to do any saltwater fishing except on most piers and charter boats, who usually provide a blanket license. Oceanside piers rent out rods and reels, and they will always have bait, tackle and an up-to-date fishing report. If you have your own equipment, then surf fishing from the beach is a great option, and there is never a cover charge. You can also take a ferry to one of the State Park islands such as Hammocks Beach for some truly unspoiled surf fishing. For a great experience with friends or family, try camping out under the full moon in September and October and night fishing for big redfish in the surf. During the spring, summer and fall, surf-casters are hooking up with red drum, black drum, spots, bluefish, whiting, spanish mackerel, speckled trout, grey trout and flounder. A standard bottom rig with cut bait or shrimp will always get bites, but digging up some of the sand-fleas scurrying along the beach or catching some small baitfish with a cast-net to use for live bait can give anglers the upper hand. For those who have their sea-legs ready, there are several ways to get out on the water at the Crystal Coast. If you want in on the action but don’t have your own boat, there are many local fishing guides and charter boats that put clients on fish year-round both inshore and offshore. Depending on the time of year, the charter option can put you and your family or friends on redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and sheepshead inshore or mackerel, cobia, mahi, tuna, wahoo, grouper and bottom fish offshore. There are also options for more extreme fishing like bow-fishing, flounder-gigging and spearfishing. Even anglers with their own boat can always benefit from the tips and tactics learned by taking a charter and applying them to their personal fishing trips. fishing The fishing season typically begins in the spring as red drum, speckled trout and flounder begin to ease their way out of the rivers and estuaries toward the sound. At the same time sea mullet, grey trout, flounder, redfish, black drum and bluefish are moving into the inshore waters from the ocean. Further into the Atlantic, big yellow-fin tuna and wahoo can be found by trolling in the Gulf Stream, while bottom fishing for grouper, snapper, black sea bass and triggerfish heats up as well. During the summer, the Crystal Coast is a fisherman’s dream. Flounder, red drum, black drum, speckled trout and sheepshead can all be caught inshore in the sounds, inlets and waterways. Offshore fishing heats up as bluefish, spanish and king mackerels, cobia, amberjack, barracuda, mahi, wahoo, grouper, bottomfish and billfish are all eager to give you a great fight. As the fall approaches, most of these fish stay in the area and just get bigger and more aggressive. This is also when the famous Crystal Coast spot run kicks into gear. Spots are great for kids and first-time fishermen, but many 50-year captains love to go spot fishing. The spots make their run down the beach and through the main waterways, so they are easy to find, and they will eat just about any piece of bait you offer up, especially shrimp and bloodworms. Spots fry up great, making a delicious treat that catches easy. Even during the winter our area offers good fishing opportunities for redfish and trout inshore and wahoo and bottomfish in the ocean. No matter what time of year it is, the Crystal Coast is an absolute paradise for recreational fishing and offers anglers of any age or experience a chance to catch big fish! Cool off in the water after a hot day in the sun, reel in some dinner for the family, or just spend time being lulled by the soothing sound of the waves. There are plenty of activities for you and your family to enjoy! On those balmy summer days when you just can’t seem to cool off, there’s nothing like running full speed across the beach and jumping in the ocean, letting the cool waves splash around you. Or perhaps you’d rather take a dip in more tranquil waters of one of the nearby inlets. Swimming, surfing and wave riding make for an afternoon of fun that the whole family can enjoy together. Want to see what’s happening under the surface? The Crystal Coast is one of two spots in North America where the warm waters of the Gulf Stream head toward the coastline, making for perfect diving conditions. Clear water, exciting shipwrecks, colorful fish and frequent large animal encounters are just a few of the reasons that Morehead City is number one among North American diving destinations and among the top five dive spots in the world, according to the readers of Rodale’s Scuba Diving Magazine. Diving is a great way to see the Crystal Coast from a whole new perspective. For those who want to see the sights without getting wet, consider renting a single or tandem kayak and spending the day on the inland waters paddling to your heart’s content. Explore the quiet marshes and estuaries while gazing across a natural habitat filled with coastal birds and marine life. You may even encounter a bottlenose dolphin on your journey. Pack a picnic lunch, and once you get hungry, stop at a peaceful island to revitalize your energy and bask in your surroundings.
While you’re there, be on the lookout for shark teeth, some of which are millions of years old. Once you find one, you can treasure it forever. One of the newest sports to hit the coast is stand up paddleboarding (otherwise known as SUP). Paddlers stand on a long board, similar to a surfboard, and use a paddle to swiftly glide across the water. It’s an intense workout and takes a bit of upper body endurance, but once you get the hang of it, it’s well worth the effort and completely manageable for beginners. The best way to enjoy SUP is in a group, so bring your friends along and follow your trusty guide to encounter waters unknown. Looking to pick up the speed a little? Try your hand at zipping across the waves on a personal watercraft, available at many rental spots along Crystal Coast. You may choose between a stand-up or sit-down model, and you can either ride with a small group of two to three people or by yourself. These personal watercrafts can be rented for a few hours or even for the full day. Don’t feel like working to get from A to B? No problem! Hop on one of the many tour boats or ferries heading to the Cape Lookout National Seashore or other beautiful locales. These tours often provide an up-close look at the many species of marine life found off the coast, including dolphins and the famous wild ponies of Shackleford Banks. Don’t forget to bring your camera along to get some excellent shots. Perhaps rather than being on a boat, you’d enjoy riding above one. The enticing sport of parasailing makes this idea possible!
