What do the locals do? 1 Shop Vintage
Chesapeake is truly a shopper’s delight! With chic boutiques and funky retail stores, the area provides visitors with a daily dose of retail therapy. Locals enjoy the Intercoastal Plaza (located close to the Intracoastal Waterway) chocked full of unique shops that mostly focus on vintage and reclaimed furniture and eclectic home décor.
2 Neighborhood dining
Dive into the authentic Chesapeake dining experience at any of our favorite local restaurants. For a taste of regional soul, visit one of our favorite locally-owned diners and dives. Any Chesapeakeian will tell you that Off The Hook Seafood Restaurant & Market is the place to go for seafood! Specializing in locally caught seafood and locally grown produce, an extensive wine selection from small family-owned wineries and an on-site market offering the best in local caught seafood. For your sweet tooth, stop by locally-renowned Carolina Cupcakery. See for yourself the reason Dawn has been on Cupcake Wars more than once!
3 Hit the Parks
Outdoor enthusiasts take pilgrimage to Chesapeake to find inner peace in some of the best-preserved, natural spots on the East Coast. Find the perfect outlet for your passion in our Mid-Atlantic paradise. Camp, kayak, fish, hunt, golf or bike in Mother Nature’s playground. Explore where the wild things really are in the more than 112,000 acres of forested wetland and wilderness in the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge or venture into Northwest River Park, with picnic shelters, play areas, horse shoes, volleyball nets, a putt-putt course and an equestrian area – see for yourself why Northwest River Park & Campground is a four-time “Best of Chesapeake” winner.
4 Brunch
Brunch is a much-loved meal in Chesapeake. Whether recovering from a day-long hike or caffeinating for the day ahead, most weekend brunch spots are packed out. Favorites like The Egg Bistro’s cinnamon swirl French toast, Bergey’s Breadbasket’s on-the-farm bakery providing homemade goodies fresh out of the oven that simply cannot be found elsewhere or the grilled sausages, fresh cut home fries, and buttered biscuits at Pop’s Diner Co. keep Chesapeake natives well fed and happy.
5 Do the local brew
Big. Bold. Barrel-aged beers. Big Ugly Brewery is Chesapeake’s first microbrewery. Big Ugly — named after the brew master’s restored 1955 Chevrolet panel truck —typically has six to eight beers on draft and sells its brews by the pint, in growlers and by kegs. Its aged beers, which can pull the various flavors from wooden barrels that housed rum or bourbon, are sold in limited bottle amounts. The brewery is also planning a hard root beer. Some of their flagship beers include a Russian Imperial Stout, Blonde & Pale Ales, IPA and a Vanilla Porter.
6 Explore the Gardens
Locals adore getting back to nature at Nature’s Classroom! The Chesapeake Arboretum is a 48-acre natural classroom dedicated to promoting horticultural and environmental awareness. The Arboretum headquarters is an eighteenth century farmhouse with theme gardens that includes a fragrance and antique rose garden. The farmhouse was built in 1730 with an addition built in 1822. One of Virginia’s finest trail systems meanders through a mature hardwood forest with many varieties of native plants and trees. Part of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail South Chesapeake Loop, this site is not to be missed. www.visitchesapeake.com

foodie
Food for the
A foodie, by definition, is a gourmet, or a person who has an ardent or refined interest in food and alcoholic beverages. A foodie seeks new food experiences as a hobby rather than simply eating out of convenience or hunger. Chesapeake’s growing mom-and-pop, local flair restaurants are increasing each year. While you’re here, be sure to check some of them out!
The Cutting Edge Cafe was opened in April, 2009 and has been an increasingly popular lunch spot. Recently, the lunch hours have expanded to dinner in order to accommodate a wider demographic of foodie patrons! They’re proud to be a locally owned and operated establishment. All of their artisanal breads are baked in house daily and they strive to source from local farms and markets whenever possible. Just about everything they make is made from scratch, with lots of love. So whether you’re dining in or carrying out you can take pride in the fact that you know what’s in the food you’re eating! Passion The Restaurant is a place of comfort, visually stunning, refined but yet affordable. A place where the politics of life becomes distant noise as one enjoys fine wine drifting over their palates. A place hosting an award winning chef who shares his talents with those who wish to be on the receiving end of the fine art of cooking. Chef Barner has been part of the Coastal Virginia restaurant community for many, many years. Working for and with many of the finest chefs in the area Chef Barner had the opportunity to learn many different styles of the culinary arts including classical French, Cajun and Japanese. Combining these with American Bistro, Chesapeake Bay Classic 12
Chesapeake Visitors’ Guide 2015
Seafood recipes and exposure to a variety of restaurants gives him a unique knowledge base for the creative art of cooking. His creativity is obvious when seeing his presentations, the taste of his sauces and the flavorful combinations on every plate. Chef Barner insists on buying only the freshest produce, fish and seafood. Among Barner’s many contributions to the restaurant are his award winning She-crab soup, their feature of the house, Rack of Lamb, their incredible Tapas selection, their selection of homemade desserts and last but not least his hugely popular Monday night kitchen side cooking classes.
Cotton Southern Bistro is exactly as the name implies. Just as cotton is comfortable to wear, Cotton Southern Bistro seeks to bring comfort back to dining. Cotton offers traditional southern/regional cuisine by using familiar recipes and fresh “farm to table” ingredients in a comfortable and family friendly setting. Upon entering, the focus is on their market boards with the fresh fare of the week. Specials are ever changing with the season and their staff has been trained to offer friendly, knowledgeable and attentive service.
Bergey’s Breadbasket, a rustic bakery/ice cream parlor, is not to be missed in southern Chesapeake. Breads, hot cinnamon buns, cupcakes, frozen yogurt, ice cream…this place has everything you would expect from the name. But it is also loaded with homemade specialties like the comfort foods…chicken pot pies, stellar sandwiches and even barbeque. Bergey’s ends up feeling more like a small scale artisan farmer’s market than just a bakery.

Walking the complete span of the bridge and back is approximately 2 miles and an experience you won’t

vintage!
That’s so
Find classic pieces, retro treasures and great deals all in one place! If you are a firm believer that most trends never really go out of style; they just go into hibernation, then the newly occupied shops at the Intercoastal Plaza and surrounding area is where you need to be! Many of these shops focus on vintage and reclaimed furniture and eclectic home décor as well as jewelry, some clothing and vintage cookware. Be sure to check out 3 Little Black Birds. This store has assembled a stellar group of artisans in the Great Bridge section of Chesapeake. The store specializes in one of kind vintage, repurposed, handcrafted and antique items. It is the perfect place to “Buy Local”. Or stop over to The Red Chair, where they have those hard to find, one of a kind items that will help make your house a home.
Why shop vintage? Here are a few reasons:
• You can often find one-of-a-kind pieces. • It’s frugal! If you are interested in artwork, often times you can find “real” art pieces for less than what you would pay for a copy of a poster. • Quality is key. Believe it or not, furniture was completely made out of wood back in the day. • See a piece you love but the finish is imperfect? Paint it. Missing a knob? Replace it. • Recycling is good. There is no need to throw out a perfectly good item when it can be reused or repurposed.
