Dismal Swamp Canal

I

nstead of spending your summer lying by the pool, why not try

“Endless miles of historic, awe-inspiring waterways is the reason Chesapeake is Coastal Virginia’s premier kayak destination.” – Kevin Fonda, Owner of Adventure Kayak Tours

something adventurous this season? In Chesapeake, there are plenty of scenic waterways to explore through paddling sports. Even if you’re

new to paddling, you’ll love discovering all there is to do in Chesapeake.

Kayaking has become one of the most popular paddling sports in Chesapeake, and it’s not hard to see why. Paddlers love gliding along the

Great Dismal Swamp Canal, keeping their eyes peeled for the diverse wildlife in the area. This area is especially popular with birders who hope to spot some of the rare birds that migrate through the Great Dismal Swamp Wildlife Refuge. Kayakers also enjoy paddling in Northwest River Park, one of Chesapeake’s premier fishing hotspots, and casting a line for crappie, bass and catfish. For another waterway excursion, locals and visitors alike can unwind by canoeing on Lake Drummond, one of the only two natural lakes in Virginia, or by identifying unusual flora and fauna found along the brackish waters of the Deep Creek. Don’t let the season slip by without adventure this year. Grab a kayak or canoe and build lifelong memories with paddles in hand.

ining in Chesapeake can and should be much more

than just receiving your daily sustenance. It should be an adventure, a way to immerse yourself in the culture

and flavor, a way to experience the city as a local and a chance to break your taste buds out of their routine with some staple Chesapeake dishes. When you think “Farm to Table” you don’t want to miss Bergey’s

Breadbasket or Cotton Southern Bistro. Bergey’s is a small

artisan farmer’s market that serves up fresh breads and desserts made daily. You can be assured that the strawberries for their strawberry pie were picked fresh that morning. Cotton Southern Bistro brings comfort back to dining, offering traditional southern/ regional cuisine by using familiar recipes and fresh, farm-to-table ingredients. Specials are ever changing with the season, and both are known for their friendly, knowledgeable and attentive service. Located in the heart of Coastal Virginia, Chesapeake seafood

is front and center in the dining mix. Off the Hook Seafood

Restaurant & Market specializes in locally caught seafood and locally grown produce, an extensive wine selection from small family-owned wineries and an on-site market offering the best in local caught seafood.

Big Ugly Brewing Company is Chesapeake’s first microbrewery. Named after the brewmasters’ restored 1955 Chevrolet panel truck, Big Ugly typically has six to eight beers on draft. Its aged beers pull the various flavors from wooden barrels that housed rum or bourbon.

Chesapeake Visitors’ Guide 2016

Washington in the Swamp is a “must do” on any adventurer’s bucket list. Endless miles of historic, awe-inspiring waterways is the reason Chesapeake is Coastal Virginia’s premier kayak destination,” says Kevin Fonda, owner of Adventure Kayak Tours. Lace up your hiking boots and hit the trails of the Chesapeake Arboretum (part of the Virginia Birding & Wildlife Trail). No eastern adventure would be complete without being inspired by beautiful forests. The Chesapeake Arboretum, located 5 miles from town will give you a new sense of appreciation for old growth forests. A beautifully maintained trail system will have you wondering why humans cut down such beautiful organisms. Take to the air at Hampton Roads Air Tours for their Nature Lovers Tour. This tour gives you a bird’s eye view of the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and Lake Drummond. It will leave you breathless and give you remarkable views and a sense of peace as the landscape brings alive a mosaic of fields, lake and woods. Finally, don your sneakers for a mile high

South Norfolk Jordan Bridge walking excursion. At the peak of the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge, drivers or walkers are 169 feet above the river. It’s higher than New York’s Brooklyn Bridge but shy of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge at 220 feet. With a dedicated walking path, the views are spectacular. It’s about three miles from Elizabeth River Park in Chesapeake across the bridge to Portsmouth and back. On a clear day, it has been noted you can see all the way to the oceanfront.

vintage!

That’s so

Vintage: (noun) is an old collectable item. It is collected or desirable because of its age, beauty, rarity, condition, utility, personal emotional connection, and/ or other unique features. It is an object that represents a previous era or time period in human society. If you are into vintage…find classic pieces, retro treasures and great deals all in one place! If you are a firm believer that most trends never really go out of style—they just go into hibernation—then the shops at the Intercoastal Plaza and surrounding area is just where you need to be! Many of these shops focus on vintage and reclaimed furniture and eclectic home décor as well as jewelry, some clothing and vintage cookware. Be sure to check out 3 Little Black Birds. This store has assembled a stellar group of artisans in the Great Bridge section of Chesapeake. The store specializes in-one-of-a-kind vintage, repurposed, handcrafted and antique items. It is the perfect place to “Buy Local.” Or stop over at The Red Chair, where they have those hard-to -find, one-of-a-kind items that will help make your house a home.

Why shop vintage? Here are a few reasons:

• You can often find one-of-a-kind pieces. • It’s frugal! If you are interested in artwork, oftentimes you can find “real” art pieces for less than what you would pay for a copy of a poster. • Quality is key. Believe it or not, furniture was completely made out of wood back in the day. • See a piece you love but the finish is imperfect? Paint it. Missing a knob? Replace it. • Recycling is good. There is no need to throw out a perfectly good item when it can be reused or repurposed. www.visitchesapeake.com
