The refuge is also home to Lake Drummond, one of only two natural freshwater lakes in Virginia. Rarely exceeding 6’ deep, the lake is ideal for kayaking, paddle boarding, canoeing and family fun of all kinds. Bring your camera. Join the many photographers who dot the refuge capturing everything from the majestic, submerged cypress trees, to the river otters, gray foxes, mink and other extraordinary animals that roam these beautiful grounds. ALL, INCLUDING DOGS, ARE WELCOME. There’s no shortage of things to do in Chesapeake City Park, a 90-acre site designed for people of all ages. Kids love our Fun Forest Playground, a 3-acre playground and imagination center with endless discoveries. And when it comes to play, the park is equipped for volleyball, horseshoe and basketball, with plenty of room for all. The Skate Park makes us a unique destination. It’s open to skateboarders, skaters and bikers and boasts a spine ramp, hip ramp and three-quarter pipe. Don’t forget your furry friends. Our Dog Park allows generous space for your dog to roam and play unleashed. The park offers a variety of picnic shelters, some seat as many as 12 tables, which is perfect for family reunions and birthdays.

With sights at Northwest River Park, A Place for Girls, Oak Grove Lake Park, Dismal Swamp Canal Trail, and the Chesapeake Arboretum, the South Chesapeake Loop circles southward toward the North Carolina border and returns just south of the city.
Chesapeake has been a sanctuary for birds and bird watchers since the 17th century. Home to more than 200 species, the birding is superb all year round. In the spring and summer you’ll see bluebirds, great-crestedflycatchers, pee wees and more. In the fall and winter, you’ll see chipping fox sparrows, song sparrows and dark-eyed junkos. At any time you might see assorted hawks, merlins and even a bald eagle. And don’t miss the wooded swamplands and canebrakes of Chesapeake’s Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Bells Mill Park or the South Chesapeake Loop of the Virginia Birding Trail.
