This is a basic, beautiful idea that looks as elegant as you want it to. Wine glasses are classy, and they range from small and dainty to grand and elaborate. To create the candleholder, the wine glasses are placed upside down with the candles sitting atop the bases. Yuletide Union A Snow-Capped, Vintage Christmas Wedding Unites This Couple In A Holy Night Of Matrimony Compiled by Ashley Schaefer Photography by Keith Cephus Photography www.KeithCephus.com Who: Jessie Thompson, physical therapist, and JD Tippit, explosive ordnance disposal tech. When: December 21, 2013. Where: The ceremony took place at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. The reception followed at the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach. Guest List: Approximately 100 guests attended the wedding. Guests traveled from Texas, Washington, Delaware and North Carolina. Where They Met: Jessie and JD met on a blind date set up by friends Katy and Ross in Greenville, N.C., in March 2012. At the time, Jessie was working on her doctorate in physical therapy and JD was stationed at Fort Bragg. The Engagement: Jessie visited JD in Florida, where he was in school for nine months, to celebrate her 25th birthday. “He planned a whole day of events including breakfast, lunch and shopping—he even had an itinerary. After a dinner of crab legs eaten by the water, he took me to Fort Walton Beach to catch the sunset. We were walking through Gulf Islands National Seashore with the sun setting behind us when we came upon two TIKI torches on an empty beach. There was a shovel there and he had me dig for the ‘treasure box,’” Jessie recounts. While Jessie thought all the planning was for her birthday, it turned out that the treasure was actually an engagement ring! Wedding Wishes: “I wanted a vintage Christmas vibe. The reception venue, centerpieces and airplane postcards people signed and left in a Christmas hat box were chosen to meet this goal,” says Jessie. What’s Next: The couple now resides in Raeford, N.C., where they plan on living for the next two and a half years while JD finishes his army contract. After his contract is up, the couple may move to JD’s home state of Texas.

Airplanes, like this cargo plane from the Military Aviation Museum, tied in with JD’s military background and added a unique aspect to the wedding. “Jonathan [Lichtenstein from the Military Aviation Museum] was amazing at coordinating the wedding!” says Jessie.

Rings:

Jessie’s white gold engagement ring and diamond band were purchased as a set from Helzberg Diamonds. Her rings fit perfectly inside JD’s tungsten ring with exotic Hawaiian Koa wood.

Lighting and Decor:

Stage Right Lighting in Virginia Beach set the scene at the reception, where the bride and groom made their big entrance as husband and wife.

Send-Off:

The pair exited the reception through a blissful winter wonderland. “We had a snow machine from Stage Right Lighting. It was 65 degrees in December when we left, which is not cold enough for natural snow. However, I think we fooled a few tipsy guests,” says Jessie.

Bouquet:

The bride’s bouquet bloomed with Christmas spirit thanks to Pungo Florist’s creation of white roses, red berries and greenery.

FLOWERS:

Floral Events in Pungo provided the bridal flowers.

Gown, Makeup and Jewelry:

The bride’s best friend and bridesmaid gifted the bride with a three-strand pearl necklace and acted as her makeup artist on the big day. Jessie wore an ivory lace gown with a V back and cap sleeve from David’s Bridal.

Groomsmen:

The groomsmen donned black Vera Wang tuxes with ivory silk handkerchiefs and ivory shirts from David’s Bridal. The groom stood out with his sharp, black bowtie.

A Whimsical Outdoor Wedding Sets The Tone For These High School Sweethearts Compiled by Angela Blue Photography by Gian Valdivia, www.GianValdivia.com Who: Anne Carey, assistant kindergarten teacher, and Cody Leonard, front desk clerk at a doctor’s office. When: July 20, 2013. Where: Berkeley Plantation, Charles City. Guest List: Approximately 125 guests traveled from Arkansas, California, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Iowa, Maryland, Montana and New Jersey. Where They Met: 10th grade PE class; Anne says she was swooned by Cody’s basketball skills. Engagement: Anne was in the office at school with her boss Betsy—who is also Cody’s mother—discussing her first year as a kindergarten assistant. After the brief meeting, Anne went back to her classroom to find Cody, her mother and Cody’s father waiting for her. The students held up a sign that read: Anne will you marry me? Cody, cloudy-eyed and giddy, put one knee down and opened a black, velvet box revealing a stunning rose gold ring. After Anne said yes, she and Cody kissed, and the group of kindergarteners resounded in a simultaneous, “Ewww!” Wedding Wishes: When planning their wedding, Anne and Cody wanted to accentuate their surroundings and not take away from Berkeley Plantation’s already stunning beauty. “I wanted our decorations to look effortless and laid-back,” Anne explains. “While everything was DIY, I didn’t want it to look too crafty.” The couple incorporated special touches to reflect their personalities, including having guests fill out a Mad Libs-style “guestbook” and serving their favorite beer at the reception along with a mac ‘n cheese bar. What’s Next: Cody is anticipating the acceptance of a medical school in Virginia, so depending on where he gets accepted, the couple may stay in Virginia Beach or move as far as Charlottesville. Anne hopes to stay in the school system and plans to focus on her writing. Communion

Because the couple has firm beliefs about marriage and its sanctity, they chose to take communion during their ceremony. “We wanted to express this to our family and friends by centering our ceremony on God and why we’ve been able to remain together through the hard times,” Anne says.

Grisha Kramer and girlfriend JessicaRoxanne Atienza, a high school and college friend of Anne’s, performed music during the reception. “After reconnecting and hearing their sweet, folksy style, Cody and I knew we wanted their live music playing our favorite tunes,” Anne says.

The couple didn’t want guests to feel like they needed to sit on either the bride’s or the groom’s side, so they created a sign that says: Sit wherever you like. “We didn’t like the idea of our families being divided and felt that from that day on, we were one big family,” Anne says.

Anne borrowed the chair from a friend to add to the vintage, whimsical, “Gatsby” vibe of the day.

Since Anne and Cody love s’mores, their caterer, Sweetwater Cuisine, came up with the idea of a s’mores bar with gourmet marshmallows in flavors of mocha and coconut.

The Holiday Inn North Beach staff made sure our day ran perfectly. All of the staff was amazing. We held our ceremony in the Atrium, with the glass ceiling which was lovely. We wanted a beach wedding, without being on the beach and it was the pictureperfect venue and ambience! We then held our reception in the Vista del Mare ballroom with dinner and dancing. The food was magnificent, I am a foodie so I am picky about the food and it was remarkable. All of the guests were raving about the Caribbean Jerk Salmon! The head Chef Charles was so nice, he helped us adjust the menu until we were 100% happy about it and even brought us breakfast the next morning! I would have my wedding again at Holiday Inn & Suites North Beach in a heartbeat. Our guests loved the atmosphere of the hotel and could not believe how friendly and helpful the entire staff was. The staff was amazing during the entire wedding process and our big day; I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t rave enough about the unbelievable service my husband and I got, and all of the wedding guests, and would recommend the Holiday Inn to anyone looking for a beautiful hotel with friendly, accommodating service for their wedding day. The North Beach Staff did everything they could to make sure everything was perfect! I sent many, many, many, MANY emails/phone calls and they answered each one right away happily! They even left a surprise for us in our suite to find after the wedding. We had a wonderful honeymoon suite the night of the wedding, courtesy of the hotel, and they made is so easy for us to extend our stay. If you want a romantic and fun-filled wedding with top notch service, I would recommend the Holiday Inn & Suites North Beach above all others!

Mint Julep Bourbon Balls Ingredients

1 (12-ounce) box vanilla wafers, crushed fine (2 1⁄2 cups) 1 3⁄4 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 cup chopped, toasted pecans 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 2 1⁄2 tablespoons light corn syrup 2 tablespoons mint simple syrup 1⁄3 cup bourbon

Method Stir the vanilla wafer crumbs, 1 cup of the sugar, the pecans, and the cocoa powder together in a large bowl. Whisk the corn syrup, bourbon and mint simple syrup together in a small bowl. Pour the mixture over the vanilla wafer mixture, then stir well to completely incorporate. Refrigerate the mixture for 5 minutes. Place the remaining 3⁄4 cup sugar in a large bowl. Scoop the vanilla wafer–bourbon mixture into 1-inch balls (the larger end of a melon scoop is just the right size) or form into squares, and roll in the confectioners’ sugar. Transfer the balls to an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 1 day or up to 3 weeks before serving to allow the flavors to meld. Roll in additional confectioners’ sugar before serving. Yields about 4 dozen. This recipe is an adaptation of my classic Bourbon Balls in my cookbook, Dishing Up Virginia.

One of the most refreshing treats of spring is a mint julep; a heady cocktail of mint, sugar, bourbon and ice. The classic cocktail has historic origins in Virginia, where it was written about as early as 1803, and perfected early- to mid-19th century at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, when West Virginia was still part of the Old Dominion. We honor those traditions in another favorite Southern treat: bourbon balls. Colloquially referred to as southern truffles, these confections are found across Virginia and the South, especially during celebratory times. Just a hint of mint makes these sweet treats sing. These Mint Julep Bourbon Balls make wonderful favors at spring-time affairs; place in small aluminum candy foils, place a few in a small box and tie with a green ribbon for a take-away folks will remember.

Mint simple syrup is easy to make: combine 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water with 1-1/2 cup mint leaves that have been chopped in a heavy saucepan and bring to a boil; stir until sugar is dissolved. Reduce to a simmer for 2-3 minutes and strain to remove the mint. The syrup will keep for several weeks refrigerated in a closed container.
