Custom Signs Complete With HandCrafted Flowers Give Weddings Some “DIY Done Right” Decor By Melissa M. Stewart When Jackie DeVore and her mom spent months constructing an 8-by-8foot wall made entirely of paper f lowers for her 2012 wedding, she swore she’d never touch another of these laborious creations again. “But, several months later I really missed the creativity and was bogged down in my 9–5. My husband encouraged me to experiment with the f lowers once more but on a smaller scale,” says DeVore. And now, several years later, she has made a business out of crafting chalkboard-style signs embellished with custom paper f lowers that she sells through her Etsy site Pancakes & Glue Guns. DeVore completes each order by hand—no stencils, patterns or machinery—in her Williamsburg home and delights brides with table numbers, escort cards, welcome signs and more that shout “DIY done right.” “I would say every few months I experiment and come up with an entirely new f lower type and process for making new leaves or petals, usually inspired by a custom request,” says DeVore. “I love experimenting with new f lower types and using bold and bright color combinations. I also love the fact that each one of these signs is entirely one of a kind and can never be duplicated exactly.” DeVore added hand lettering to the signs in 2016 after plenty of practicing, she says. Her attention to detail, including using no fewer than 15 pairs of scissors depending on the material of choice, shows in her perfectly papered and simply pretty products. She says customers looking for something one of a kind often send a picture of their color scheme or other decor and she is able to make signs to match.

In The Spirit Two Bars Are Better Than One Providing your guests with a signature cocktail option at your wedding is always a personal way to get the party started. But it’s time to take that crafty concoction to the next level and consider an entire bar dedicated to delicious drinks with a theme. Savvy and on-trend brides are now incorporating second (or satellite) bars serving only special sippers made with the couples’ favorite liquor, offering a wine flight, setting up a sampling station for local, craft beer and many more spirited ideas. So grab a glass, and have fun toasting until you decide on a bar that best represents your soiree’s style. By Melissa M. Stewart
SECOND BAR SUGGESTIONS • Consider the time of your event. If you are having a morning or early afternoon wedding, think about a mimosa or bellini bar with various fresh fruit juices to add to your preferred sparkling wine or champagne. If your reception will last well into the evening hours, roll out an after-dinner or post-dancing bar featuring a selection of favorite bourbons, dessert drinks or coffee-infused cocktails. • Pay homage to both the bride and groom with a bar pouring his and hers cocktails that pay tribute to favored flavors, hometowns, alma maters, etc. Extra points for cute and clever names. • If available, honor the place you chose to host your wedding by selecting local spirits, wine or beer to use at the satellite bar in mixed drinks or on their own. • If you set up a station for wine flights or beer sampling, we recommend including a food pairing for a nice touch. Have your caterer suggest appetizers, cheeses or charcuterie that complement your beverage options. • Always remember the importance of seasonality. Don’t serve a watermelon mojito for a December affair or a hot toddy in the summer heat. Potables that incorporate fresh and readily available herbs and produce will be the most well received. • Use the second bar as another place to showcase your color scheme. Who: Kim Nguyen, professional makeup artist, and Robert Boulter, web developer for a shipping company. When: Sept. 18, 2015. Where: Hermitage Museum and Gardens, Norfolk. Guest List: Approximately 175 guests traveled from California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Northern Virginia and Germany. Where They Met: The two had many mutual friends since they both attended Tallwood High School and Old Dominion University, and what began as a good friendship soon turned into a dating relationship. The Engagement: On a chilly day in February, Kim and Bobby decided to spend Valentine’s Day in Norfolk visiting the Hermitage Museum and Gardens as well as the Chrysler Museum of Art. “We hid under a little nook to block the cold,” Kim says. “Standing there we were kind of just soaking up the scenery, and then Bobby got on one knee, expressed how he felt about us and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes, and he gave me a beautiful aquamarine ring (my birthstone), which I really love.” Wedding Wishes: “We wanted a wedding that truly felt magical, sweet, yet laidback. I love being outside, so it was a given that we would have an outdoor wedding underneath the sky and stars,” Kim says. Instead of adopting the traditional wedding rituals, they opted for a more customized approach to truly emulate their interests and reflect their relationship. “We didn’t have a seating chart, as we wanted guests to sit with whoever they wanted to, and we went with a family-style dinner so guests could interact with one another.” The two also opted out of the garter and bouquet toss, and Kim had her best friend as the Man of Honor to mix things up. “It was important to us to have personal elements and to recognize our loved ones. I lost my mother to cancer the year before, so it was very important to me that she was remembered that day. I had a framed photo of her on her very own chair at the ceremony.” What’s Next: Kim and Bobby ventured to Europe this past June for their honeymoon. They plan to grow their family within the next few years.
BRIDE: Gown— Watters from BHLDN. Headpiece—Friend and bridesmaid, who is also a fashion professional, crafted Kim’s lovely headpiece. GROOM: Suit—Asos. BOUTONNIERES: The men wore boutonnieres of pom-poms and hops, a nod to the Boulters’ love for beer. KISS OF COLOR: Among the neutral color palette, Kim incorporated bold-colored flowers as her “kiss of color.” Norfolk Wholesale Floral provided the bouquets of pom-poms, dahlias,

roses, dusty miller and thistle. Dangling from Kim’s bouquet is a photo of her mother. CENTERPIECES: Bobby crafted the whimsical terrariums adorning each of the community-style tables. WEDDING PARTY: “Our wedding party consisted of our closest friends and family. They were people who were by our sides throughout our relationship, watched [it] blossom and always gave us so much love and support,” Kim says. Bridesmaids’ dresses— Jenny Yoo from Nordstrom.

FAMILY PHOTOS: A table labeled “In honor of our loved ones watching from heaven” held photos of loved ones who had passed, including Breyer, Bobby’s beloved German shepherd. SWEETS: The lemon blueberry and salted caramel chocolate cupcakes were homemade by Kim’s niece and her friends. FAVORS: Each guest took home adorable succulents, which were ordered from Etsy. Kim and her bridesmaids hand lettered the tags and packaged each. TOUCHES OF NATURE: A glass terrarium, made by her bridesmaid Aleth, was reserved for cards. MONARCH PRIDE: Many of their friends and family members also attended Old Dominion. “We wanted to represent our school!” Kim says.

Who: Tanisha Martin, assistant principal at an Alexandria elementary school, and Kermit Burks, assistant principal at a D.C. elementary school. When: Oct. 24, 2015. Where: Tanisha’s family home in Tabb, York County. Guest List: Approximately 100 guests traveled from Alabama, California, Maryland, New York, Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. Where They Met: According to Kermit, he was at an event waiting for the speaker of the hour to come onto the stage when “a silhouette of a fine woman caught his eye.” A few months later, he saw Tanisha facilitating a professional development workshop he was attending. “This time he not only noticed my beauty; he also noticed my wits. He was smitten,” Tanisha says. The Engagement: On their way to the airport, Tanisha was on the phone with her mother when Kermit asked her to get something out of his bag. Though she asked him to wait, he insisted, so she told her mom she’d call her back. “As we were riding down 495, Kermit, while driving, grabbed my hand and asked if I would be Mrs. Burks. I said yes, he leaned over and kissed me, and then said, ‘I wanted you to do it while you were on the phone with your mom’ (because we are always on the phone, according to him). I called her right back.” Wedding Wishes: After considering the Northern Virginia/Maryland/D.C. area for their wedding, they landed on Tanisha’s hometown in Tabb. “I had always dreamed of getting married at home where I grew up, so we were able to make that dream come true,” she says. “I wanted it to be whimsical, like what people read about or dream about in fairy tales. It was important to me that everyone had fun and felt special— making it just as special of a day for everyone as it was for me and Kermit.” What’s Next: The two live in Maryland and are expecting twins in December.
BRIDE: Gown—Elegance by Roya Couture Bridal Atelier, Alexandria. Shoes—Kate Spade. GROOM: Men’s Wearhouse. BRIDESMAIDS: Guidelines were given for dresses to be long, in the color champagne and as little or as much sequins as they wanted. “My main thing is I wanted them to be comfortable and wear a dress they loved and felt beautiful in,” Tanisha says.
NO TEARS HERE: Tanisha admits she’s a crier, so her friend Torian gifted her a handkerchief that read “No Ugly Crying” to carry with her bouquet. GRAND ENTRANCE: “My mom had been keeping this a secret for months,” she says. “I got dressed over [at] my aunt Alice’s house and assumed I was going to take our car, but when I walked out of the house, there she was... Reagan, a beautiful black and white horse with my dad sitting in the carriage. It was quite amazing!” Services provided by Arrivals in Elegance Horse-Drawn Carriage Service, Charles City.

PLACE CARDS: To denote what her guests chose for dinner, Tanisha used stamps from Paper Source—cow for surf and turf, carrot for vegetarian, rooster for poultry and a shark for the children’s menu. AUTUMN FAVORS: Guests were given apple pies from Fresh Market. THE EXIT: After seeing sparklers at her cousin’s wedding, Tanisha knew she wanted the same beautiful finale to end her whimsical wedding. CENTERPIECES: “My aunt Carol is the mastermind behind the flowers,” she says. Tanisha showed her aunt some inspiration photos and the color scheme she had in mind, then gave her aunt the freedom to make her vision come to life. She was assisted by friends at The Perfect Setting and Jeff’s Flowers Of Course, both in Newport News. BOUQUET: Inspired by a New York restaurant’s dimly lit décor and black calla lilies on the tables, Tanisha knew she wanted the same flowers in her own wedding. To lighten up her bouquet and make it more jovial, she says, there were also orchids, red garden roses and black dahlias—her grandmother’s favorite. CAKE: A brushed champagne, three-tier cake—of strawberry cake, pound cake with key lime filling and the top tier as a combination of the two—was created by Incredible Edibles Bakery, Virginia Beach.
