Words of Art Hand-Lettered Details Give Your Big Day The Perfect Script

Invitation suite by Lauren Perry Studio

A well-placed swirl. Letters that swoop, curve and curl in all the right places. Words that make you stop and stare, rather than skim. Gone are the days of traditional—and a bit rigid— calligraphy. Today's detail-oriented brides look to handlettering experts to craft custom wedding day paperie that can set the style of the entire event. Lauren Perry of Lauren Perry Studio designs and handletters invitation suites, save the dates, and day-of details for local brides and tops them off with calligraphy, watercolor design, and details like silk ribbon and custom liners. She describes her style as a fun, modern take on a traditional Southern look. "I am inspired by each unique client and their love story, as well as the poise and class that heirloom wedding stationery evokes," says Perry. "Your invitation invites your closest family and friends to one of the most special days of you and your soon-to-be husband's lives. I love to incorporate little details that celebrate my couples' unique personality and top them off with pretty little things like wax stamps, silk ribbon, watercolor monograms and envelope liners." >

Topping It Off

When It Comes To Customized Wedding Keepsakes, These Detailed Creations Really Take The Cake Inspired by her love for working with paper and a passion for fashion, Virginia Beach artist Lauren McHale began creating hand-sculpted wedding cake toppers in 2010. "I realized that I could sculpt paper the same way that I sculpt clay to create textures and designs to mimic fabric and replicate attire onto miniature forms," she said. In other words, McHale specializes in personalized toppers that replicate actual brides and grooms—the dress, of course, and right down to the accessories, hair pieces, pets, props or any other important request. She receives custom orders through her Etsy shop, Crimson Muse, and spends anywhere from 10–20 hours on each topper, depending on the intricacy of the pose and attire and the time needed to bring a vision to life. She says the first step is to sculpt each figure and then bake to harden. Once cooled down, she paints the faces and then starts painting and fashioning the attire from a very thin paper. McHale uses a glue mixture to sculpt the paper into place to resemble folds and textures in the fabric, as well as to give a firm hold to the attire to keep everything in place.

"I use a variety of different materials to finalize the details including embellishments, beads, gems, Swarvorski crystals, sequins, glitter, fabric, etc. to capture any small details of the actual attire that I can," McHale says. "I challenge myself each time to see how else I can be creative in bringing to life all the details on miniature form." Big ideas made miniature is what it's all about, says McHale, and the more personal, the better. "When I receive an custom order from a customer who has an exciting idea for a cake topper that will make their wedding that much more personalized to the bride and groom I get really excited to be able to use my two hands to bring their vision to life. I always say that my most favorite part of what I do is when I receive feedback from a customer after their wedding with photos of the cake topper on the cake telling me that it will remain a memorable token of that special day for years to come." To see more of McHale's cake toppers or place an order visit Etsy.com/Shop/CrimsonMuse or e-mail McHalele@gmail.com. —Melissa M. Stewart

Trend Report:

Catering

CoVa Weddings Showcase Local Cuisine While Paying Homage to Couples’ Roots Trends in wedding catering often follow general dining trends, and that’s certainly true when it comes to couples wanting to eat fresh and local. Virginia-grown and raised cuisine has been a highly requested element of Coastal Virginia wedding catering, and caterers like the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront are committed to providing the best local dining experience for brides and grooms. “We’re fortunate in Coastal Virginia to have wonderful fresh-caught seafood and fresh fruits and vegetables. Couples should take advantage of this when it comes to their special day,” says Stephanie Hall, director of catering at the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The Hilton has a partnership with Cullipher Farms, allowing them to have access to fresh, in-season produce all year long. “No matter what season the wedding, we’re able to use local ingredients in our catering. It’s something couples look for when they go out to eat, so we’re really proud to be able to offer it to them in our catering,” says Hall. While local foods are a ref lection of the newlyweds’ life in Coastal Virginia, there’s often more to their story that they want to share with their guests. Incorporating the backgrounds, interests and stories of the bride and groom into the food is another creative way couples are bringing a personal touch to their wedding. “If they went out for coffee and donuts for their first date, we might incorporate donuts into the dessert,” says Stephanie. “We do our best to make the food ref lect the couple and allow the guests to experience a little piece of their relationship.” Jodi Newland, owner of Sweetwater Cuisine, has seen similar trends in the weddings she caters. “We’ve served clam chowder for a groom who was from New England and even made maple lollipops for a groom who was from Canada,”

A variety of wedding catering options from Sweetwater Cuisine, including miniature versions of favorite foods and customized options.

says Newland. “Couples want to showcase their backgrounds in the food they’re serving their guests. It gives the reception a personal touch and makes the food memorable.” Miniature versions of favorite foods are another popular trend in the wedding world. From a mini taco and mini margarita pairing to bite-sized dessert trif les and pies, these pocket-sized portions contribute to the event theme and make for adorable photos. Speaking of pies: cake has become optional when it comes to the dessert. Couples are

branching out, requesting pies, cobblers and other non-traditional desserts. Sweetwater Cuisine’s liquid nitrogen ice cream, which is made on the spot, is a popular alternative or addition to the dessert. “It ties in with the idea of having the food ref lect the couple—their interests, their personal backgrounds," says Newland. "It’s their day, and it’s their opportunity to express themselves." —Chelsea Sherman

THE TAR ROOF When you think of Virginia Beach weddings, you likely envision the typical beach ceremony—perhaps an oceanside hotel reception complete with nautical decor and a seafood spread. The great thing about Virginia Beach is that it is so much more diverse than that. Getting married in this city doesn’t automatically mean having a coastal wedding. The Tar Roof in Pungo provides the perfect Virginia Beach venue for the couple looking for a more rustic setting to tie the knot. The Tar Roof is a 160-year-old farmhouse in Pungo that has been converted into a local art gallery. Photographers Anthony Pakingan and Eddie and Kristine Compo stumbled upon the venue and saw the opportunity to create a space for local art, photography and special events. “We have a unique space perfect for a rustic, country wedding,” Anthony says. “Being photographers and having shot well over 100 weddings, we also have a distinctive take on being a wedding venue. Several spaces around the property are specially designed for shoots. The whole place is more or less an outdoor studio.” Weddings at The Tar Roof include an outdoor tent that can accommodate up to 300 guests, a luxury restroom trailer, valet parking and a day-of coordinator. Brides also have access to a bridal suite upstairs. Couples who book The Tar

Roof also have the option to book the photographer owners to shoot the wedding. “We’re veterans in this industry. We understand how the day works, and we’re excited to be able to offer our expertise to couples,” Anthony says. THE HISTORIC POST OFFICE Across the HRBT, a downtown Hampton building has been converted into a breathtaking venue. The Historic Post Office was the only working post office in Hampton when it was completed in 1914. After operating as a post office for 30 years, it was converted several times. building has served as a restaurant, cafe and a film studio, but as of December it became available as a premier event venue. The Historic Post Office has all the historic charm of an early 20th century downtown building with all the amenities of a modern event venue. The building has 2,000 square feet of room, allowing for a 250-person seated reception or a 400-person, cocktail-style reception. With the large space and neutral pallet, the layout and decor options are wide open. “The building is a blank slate for brides. It can be transformed into whatever their vision is for their day,” says Kelsey Leeper, venue manager. The Historic Post Office has a full warming kitchen for caterers, as well as a full bridal suite and a gentleman’s lounge. They only host one event per day, so couples who book the venue for a wedding have

the whole day to set up and tear down, making for a low-stress experience. Located in the heart of Downtown Hampton, the post office is just a short walk away from several local restaurants and hotels, making it a great option for couples with a lot of out-of-town guests. WESTBURY HALL Hopping over to Williamsburg, another antique space has been renovated to accommodate a modern wedding. Westbury Hall, on the grounds of Williamsburg Winery, is a three-story barn that has been converted into an event venue. The first f loor of the Tudor-style barn is a wine cellar and a climate controlled dining room that provides a rustic and refined dining experience. The main f loor is the function space, which accommodates 130 guests. Upstairs is a meeting space and a

bridal suite complete with a dressing room, couches and a food and beverage station. Westbury Hall connects to Wessex Hall at Williamsburg Winery, which can accommodate 180 people for a seated reception and 280 for a cocktail style reception. “Couples have the opportunity to make the most of both of these spaces. Weddings here are such a unique and spectacular experience,” says Michael Kimball, assistant vice president of marketing for Williamsburg Winery. Westbury Hall is the perfect venue for couples wanting to do the rustic theme without having to sacrifice when it comes to amenities. Being on the grounds of Williamsburg Winery gives them access to the winery, the 28-room boutique hotel Wedmore Place and the two restaurants on site. —Chelsea Sherman

Budget Breakdown

A Practical Guide To Average Coastal Virginia Wedding Prices

Let's face it—after the question has been popped and you've answered with a resounding, "Yes," your heart immediately leaps, with thoughts of the dress of your dreams, signature cocktails, late-night dessert bars and more. Hopefully, though, your brain eventually steps in with a plan for perhaps the most important element of your big day agenda—budget. You may think you have a good idea of what you would like to spend on a wedding in Coastal Virginia, but it is a rookie mistake to rely on national averages to estimate the cost of your local event. To

A Day Defying the Odds Ancient Traditions And Medical Miracles Made A Special Bride’s Wedding Dreams Come True Compiled by Chelsea Sherman • Photography by Chelsie Darling Photography Who: Sarah Swaim, preschool teacher at The New E3 School, and Patrick Rostock, French teacher at Ocean Lakes High School. When: Oct. 29, 2016. Where: The Rose Garden and Rose Hall at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. Guest List: 212 guests traveled from Washington, D.C., Illinois, Arizona, Pennsylvania, New York and Florida. Where They Met: At age 14, Sarah was diagnosed with leukemia. The next year she attended Camp Fantastic, for kids with cancer. Patrick’s mom was a volunteer at the camp, and she and Sarah became friends. A year later, Sarah met Patrick at a family weekend. “My mom was there with me, and she said that when we said ‘Hello’ to each other, 20

she just knew something special had taken place,” Sarah says. The two were only 16 at the time and were living in different states, so they decided if it was meant to be they would come back to their relationship later. Two years later they reconnected in college and have been together ever since. The Engagement: Sarah and Patrick both volunteer with the same organization that runs Camp Fantastic. Patrick proposed to Sarah around the campfire, surrounded by their friends, at a camp family weekend. “It was so special because camp is where we met and where our love grew,” Sarah says. Wedding Wishes: The Rostock’s wedding was a day to celebrate their love, and also a

day to celebrate life. “Patrick and I have been through so much together the past eight years, and I just wanted to be able to soak in the glory of celebrating our love that day,” Sarah says. All of their guests have played a special part in their relationship. “Whether it was giving support, laughing or crying with us, their role in our relationship has meant so much to us. I hope they had a blast and could feel how much we appreciate them!” What’s Next: In December, Patrick and Sarah headed to Disney World for their honeymoon. Patrick is finishing up his licensure for French education, and Sarah is growing her career as a fundraising consultant.

WEDDING PARTY: Patrick’s best friends Brian and Tony Alba stood by his side, along with Brittney’s husband, Kendall Goodin. Sarah also had “bridesman” John Schreiber, a “her friend since first grade. BRIDE: Gown—BHLDN, Anthropologie’s Bridal Shop in Chicago. Veil—Pure English. Flower crown—New Leaf Florist. GROOM: Suit—Men’s Wearhouse.

LEADING LADIES: Sarah’s sister Kate Rosch flew in from Chicago to be her matron of honor, and her best friend Brittney Goodin stood by her side as a bridesmaid. FLOWER POWER: During leukemia treatment, Sarah had to undergo bone marrow biopsies. Leukemia cells found in the biopsy were called weeds and healthy cells were referred to as flowers. Flowers have become a symbol in Sarah and Patrick’s life of growth and health.

FOOTWEAR: Sarah and her mother were both members of Alpha Omicron Pi in college. The panda is the sorority’s mascot.

RUSTIC TOUCH: The boutonnieres were made of wheat, thistles and spray roses, giving them a rustic flair.

MIRACLE GIRL: Sarah met Abby Furco two years ago at Camp Fantastic, and the two formed a beautiful friendship. Last summer, Abby was given 48 hours to live because of complications from her cancer treatment. Abby defied all odds and was able to walk down the aisle for her friend’s special day.

ONE THOUSAND CRANES: According to ancient Japanese legend, folding 1,000 paper cranes grants you a wish from the gods. Sarah’s mother helped her fold most of the cranes. She also brought the paper to family weekends at camp, and her friends helped with the origami. “It turned into this wonderful labor of love,” Sarah says.

TEARS OF JOY: “There would have been a hole in my heart if Abby hadn’t been there for this day,” Sarah says. Sarah told Abby she didn’t have to walk the whole long way down the aisle, but Abby insisted. “She’s so stubborn in the best way,” Sarah says. WOODSY WHIMSY: “The Botanical Gardens is such a diverse venue. One minute you’re in a garden and the next you’re surrounded by trees near a lake. I could not have picked a more perfect venue,” Sarah says.

A Country Classic Southern Comfort Meets Seaside Setting in Heartfelt Autumn Wedding Compiled by Chelsea Sherman Photography by Amanda Hedgepeth Photography

Who: Heather Grotheer, office secretary earning her radiology certification, and Jim Levin, owner of Levin Contracting. When: Oct. 22, 2016. Where: Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club, Virginia Beach. Guest List: 141 close friends and family traveled from New York, Missouri, Arkansas, Florida, North Carolina, California, Massachusetts and Northern Virginia. Where They Met: The two met at Virginia Beach local's favorite Bubba’s. “I was the bartender, and he was my handsome, arrogant customer,” Heather says. The Engagement: On Christmas Day 2015, Jim surprised Heather with a yellow English lab puppy. While she was still in shock from getting the puppy, he got down on one knee and told her he wanted to 24

spend the rest of his life with her. “I cried and called him stupid and told him he couldn’t get me a puppy and a ring! And then I said yes, of course,” Heather says. Wedding Wishes: “I didn’t want my wedding to be straight out of a Pinterest page. I wanted it to be something I created myself,” Heather says. From shotgun shell boutonnieres to a real deer head on the sweetheart table trellis, Heather and Jim truly made their wedding a reflection of their unique interests. While some of the day’s details, like the wedding cakes, paid tribute to their differences, much of the wedding showcased the couple’s commonalities. “I wanted everything to have a natural, out-of-the-woods style because that really encompasses who we

are.” Jim grew up in Kansas, while Heather spent her early years in Texas, and they both enjoy the outdoors. The blending of their families was another crucial aspect of the event. Jim’s 13-year-old daughter Lauren stood by Heather as a junior bridesmaid. “The day wasn’t just about Jim and I becoming a family, but also bringing both of our families together,” Heather says. What’s Next: Jim and Heather were not able to honeymoon after the wedding due to work and school. They plan to go on their honeymoon this spring somewhere in the mountains where they can go skeet shooting and horseback riding together.

BRIDE & GROOM: Gown—Sottero & Midgley from Maya Couture. Headpiece—Kathy Forrest, Heather’s close friend and owner of Kathy Forrest Design. Suit—Miguel’s Formal Wear. DRESS DIVERSITY: Having been a bridesmaid many times herself, Heather understood the importance of making her bridesmaids feel good about what they were wearing. Her bridesmaids picked their own dresses in various purple and grey hues. SWEET HEAT SEND OFF: One of Jim’s friends provided these homemade pepper jellies for favors as his wedding gift to the couple. SOMETHING BLUE: Heather wore a sapphire ring that her dad gave to her mom before he went to fight in Desert Storm. LITTLE HELPERS: Heather’s maid of honor lost her daughter two years ago. Sweet flower girl Riley Anne Raper, one of the bridesmaid’s daughters, wore a pair of pink wings in honor of her. Ring bearer Ronan Grotheer sported a camouflage vest. DADDY’S GIRL: “I’m the typical daddy’s girl. My dad has been my hero my whole life. For as long as I can remember, he always carried a handkerchief in his pocket that he would give to me if I ever needed it. This handkerchief was my wedding gift to him,” Heather says. ANTLER ACCENTS: The antlers represent the country background the couple shares. Incorporating them into the floral arrangements gave the wedding a feeling of rustic elegance.

CREATIVE CONFECTIONS: The cakes are a tasty representation of the couple’s relationship. “Jim’s the redneck splattering mud all over my put-together self,” Heather says. Heather’s cake was a naked lavender cake, and Jim’s was made of Nutty Bars. SEAT OF HONOR: The sweetheart table was an ode to their country background. The table included Heather’s cowboy hat, real deer antlers and a rustic trellis created by her florist. BISCUIT BAR: “Being a part of a big family, we’ve been to lot of weddings. My parents always said it would be great to have another snack to enjoy after the dancing,” Heather says. The biscuit bar was another fun way the couple incorporated Southern comfort into their special day. SINGING FOR KISSES: The DJ assigned each table a song. Instead of clinking their glasses to get the couple to kiss, the guests had to come up and sing their song. Every time the word “love” was sung, Jim and Heather would kiss. “Our DJ did an amazing job of keeping the party going,” Heather says. MEN IN UNIFORM: Heather’s father and brother are both West Point grads and decorated war heroes. Since a good portion of the wedding party were also military members, having them all in uniform was a special way to incorporate that part of their lives into the wedding. Grown With Love Warm, Rustic And Modern Elements All Marry In This Sophisticated Farm-To-Table Fête Photos by Sarah Street; Concept by Becky Devlin Becky Devlin of Roost Flowers drew inspiration from her own wedding when styling this warm and rustic intimate affair. She chose Virginia Beach’s Commune, a local food-focused café next to her flower shop as the backdrop for her cozy and urban vision. The interior boasts gorgeous details such as woodwork done by local carpenters and handmade

bar stools created by a local artisan. The exterior is a great modern contrast with black stucco walls and huge windows. Devlin collaborated with Corrine Allen and Paxton Buckingham, stylists from the Virginia Beach West Elm, on the table settings and styling. They picked white plates for a clean look with a matte black bowl to reflect the black exterior of the building as well

as Commune’s metal chairs. Silver accents such as the salt and pepper shakers, hammered silver flatware, and hammered metal tray on the champagne bar added sophistication to the casual setting. Geometric shapes in some of the tabletop accessories lent a modern flair, and the soft gray runner looked perfect with the charcoal gray menus. >

The invitation suite featured a botanical design as a nod to the produce from Commune’s gardens. For the florals, Devlin went with warm-toned spring poppies and massive parrot tulips with large white amaryllis and fresh mangos and lemons to brighten up the wood-filled space. Ashley at Studio I Do selected a two-piece gown and gorgeous chunky necklace to dress the urban bride, who looked stunning against the black and wood exterior of the building.

Pier Magic

This Virginia Beach Love Story Proves Romance Lives By The Sea Both Day And Night Photography by Dragon Studio; Styling by Misty Saves the Day Stylist Misty Prewitt and her high school sweetheart/husband, Chris, fell in love by the water—just a couple of Virginia Beach kids making their first memories at the beach. So it felt natural for her to create a photo shoot with each and every element being a fun homage to dating and getting married in Virginia Beach and Coastal Virginia. continued on page 43

“I really wanted the shoot to feel quintessentially Virginia Beach,” she says. “I chose the Lynnhaven Fishing Pier because it just felt like Virginia Beach, like what any beach kid would want as a wedding element.” Prewitt also incorporated vibrant colors, textures and patterns to show a beach vibe that wasn’t necessarily all seashells and pastels. “There are fun small little details like the two birds on the table (both of my daughters are named after birds— Piper and Wren, respectively). And another fun element in the shoot that continued on page 45

I really loved were the small nods to stars and constellations. Growing up, and even now, my husband and I used to go out to the beach at Little Island and Sandbridge (near the pier) and watch the stars at night.” As a finishing touch to a beach shoot that was just a little bit different, Prewitt collaborated with photographer Mike Dragon and Fluttering Flowers on ideas and lighting that provided a truly fantastic ending to a local love story. “There’s this whole other side to Virginia Beach and living on the ocean, and that’s the beach at night.” Prewitt says. “It’s so beautiful, and we wanted to capture the romance and epicness that lives here, even when the sun isn’t shining.”
