A Picture-Perfect Send-off! L
ooking for ideas to create a special and memorable wedding send-off? Share your happiness and engage your friends and family with these fun and joyful activities at the end of your service or reception. • Walk through a curtain of bubbles! You can order custom bubble bottles with your names. • Mini beach balls are fun and playful, and make a cute keepsake for your guests! • In the spring, flower petals offer a myriad of delightful color! Will your wedding be in the autumn? Fall leaves against a bright blue sky are an amazing backdrop to a send-off. • Light up your evening send-off with glow sticks and LED wands! They make beautiful patterns in photos. For night send-offs, sparklers are also amazing (where allowed!) • Invite your family and friends to serenade you with music as you embark on your marriage! • Getting married on the beach? Provide your guests with shells to form a heart in the sand, and write a message to one another inside before you depart. • A gift of a plant to each of your guests keeps the memories of your special day alive for years! • Walk through waving ribbons in your wedding colors! Add bells for a joyful noise! Be sure to ask your wedding venue what they allow. For example, some wedding venues do not allow sparklers, or have a rule that they be used in outdoor areas only. Many venues allow biodegradable confetti made from fall leaves or flower petals, but may require a clean up fee. In addition to being fun, memorable and picture perfect, these send-off activities all have another great benefit: they don’t create harmful litter! Since 100% of balloons return to the Earth…or the ocean…as litter, please never release balloons into the air! Visit JoyfulSendoff.org for more memorable, picture-perfect and litter-free send-off ideas!

ARCHES AND HANGING ARRANGEMENTS While f lowers and foliage remain natural and whimsical, there is a trend toward overthe-top installations featuring overgrown greenery and bursting blooms. They may hang from the ceiling or run f loor to ceiling, and these attention-grabbing centerpieces bring the romance and wow factor to ceremonies and receptions.

The Big Bloom
Three Top Wedding Flower Trends Call For Arrangements That Are Anything But Structured Forget the days of monochromatic, tightly packed and ball-shaped bouquets only featuring one traditional bloom. Today's f lorals are all about freedom—think foraged foliage, woodland-inspired greenery, and lush and loose bouquets. Here we offer three of our favorite ways to let your arrangements and reception f lowers get a little wild.
GOBS OF GREEN Taking cues from Pantone, who deemed "Greenery" 2017's Color of the Year, weddings are incorporating tons of natural leaves, foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors in a number of ways. Greenery can be used beautifully on classic white cakes, in garlands of foliage stretching down the middle of tables, or as decor in wreaths or on the backs of chairs. Simple sprigs can adorn place settings, or full foliage backdrops can make a statement for ceremony sites or photo booths.

Gifts For Your Bridal Party Or Registry That Show It’s Best To Impress Virginia Beach couple Richard and Tatiana Watson know that the best presents are personal, so they created a business catered to gifts of love that really mean something. The Watsons recently celebrated five years of running Designs the Limit, an Etsy shop specializing in wedding registry gifts and favors for the entire wedding party. Graphic designer Tatiana starts with a couple's monogram—or any custom design—and uses engraving and sandblasting techniques to etch it into wood, glass, crystal, stone and more. Some of our favorite products are personalized crystal decanters, wine glasses and bamboo cheese boards for the bride and groom or
one-of-a-kind poker or grilling sets that make much-appreciated groomsman gifts. "We love being in the wedding season and being a part of our customers’ celebrations," says Tatiana. "We believe that every gift giving opportunity can become a personalized gift giving experience when you take the time and make the effort to create a custom engraved gift for your gift recipient. A gift is a canvas in our hands, and we transform items into artwork with the personalized touch." To see more from Designs The Limit or place an order, visit Etsy.com/Shop/DesignsTheLimit or email Info@DesignsTheLimit.com. —Melissa M. Stewart

At Your Service
Three Questions to Ask When Planning a Military Wedding Photos by Andrew & Tianna Photography
Coastal Virginia is home to a plethora of service men and women from every branch of the military. Many of these service members decide to get married in this beautiful region, making Coastal Virginia a popular place for military weddings. If you are engaged and in the military, here are three questions to consider. Will you need to plan the wedding long distance? The reality of the military is there is almost always the prospect of having to move. Oftentimes, military brides and grooms are serving at stations away from home when planning a wedding. Planning from a distance can be challenging. If possible, brides should designate a trusted friend or family member local to Coastal Virginia to help by meeting with vendors, checking out venues and coordinating details. Websites like TheKnot.com and the Better Business Bureau Wedding Resource Center can also help brides find trusted vendors from a distance. Will you be getting married around a popular holiday? Military couples tend to set the date around a holiday when they have scheduled leave time. This makes the days around Christmas, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day very popular military wedding dates. If you will be planning your wedding around a popular holiday, make sure you book your vendors as soon as possible. Photographers, caterers, DJs and other vendors are often booked very far in advance during these peak times. Also understand the cost to book venues will likely be higher during these popular times. Discuss with your partner whether a weekday wedding might be an option for you if the weekend prices are very high around your wedding date. Will you include military traditions in your wedding? Being in the military does not dictate that you must incorporate military formalities into your wedding, but many military couples choose to commemorate their service on their special day. One of the most obvious decisions is whether to dress in uniform. If the groom chooses to dress in uniform, the members of his wedding party who belong to a military branch will generally also wear uniforms. You might ask friends and family who are in the military and attending your wedding to dress in uniform as well. Brides who are service members can of course also choose to dress in uniform, though most forego this option in favor of a traditional wedding gown. If you have other military members in attendance, it is also traditional to seat them by rank during the reception. The saber arch is another military tradition you might consider including. Typically you would need 6–8 service members to create the arch, which creates a walkway for the bride and groom, usually immediately following the ceremony. Service members face some unique challenges when planning a wedding. Fortunately, many vendors in Coastal Virginia have experience working with military brides and grooms and are happy to help accommodate them on their special day. —Chelsea Sherman

In Trend : Reception Games
Unique Entertainment To Wow Your Guests And Make Your Party Perfect Perhaps one of the most stressful parts of a wedding for the bride and groom is making sure the guests are entertained throughout the day. Between the ceremony, taking photos and making your rounds to greet everyone, the last thing you want to worry about is keeping everyone happy. Planning some exciting games and activities is the perfect way to keep your guests amused during wedding downtime. You can provide games during the cocktail hour while the wedding party takes photos and even during the reception as a break from dancing. Here are 10 ideas for spicing up the party for your guests with games and entertainment at your wedding: OUTDOOR GAMES 1. Cornhole: Your favorite tailgating pastime can serve as a fun game for your guests while they wait for the reception to start. Customize your boards with your wedding date and save them as a memento of the day. 2. Jenga: Everyone loves a good game of Jenga, and you can even use the game as a guest book of sorts. Have your guests sign their names on the pieces or write a word of advice or encouragement for your new life together. 3. Sack Race: Get a few burlap potato sacks and have a throwback to elementary school field days. 4. Oversized board games: An outdoor cocktail hour is the perfect opportunity for a giant game of Connect 4, Checkers, Scrabble or Tic Tac Toe. These games are entertaining and look great in photos. 5. Horseshoe toss: Apropos as horseshoes are traditionally a symbol of good luck for newlyweds, a horseshoe toss is easy to set up outdoors and fun for kids and adults alike.

INDOOR/RECEPTION GAMES 6. Interactive response cards: Put cards on the table with questions like “Where will we be in 20 years?” and “What should we name our kids?” Not only will they be fun to read on the way to your honeymoon destination, but they also provide a great way to break the ice if your guests are seated at a table with people they don’t know.
We believe every cake has a story to tell. Let us tell yours
7. I Spy: Get your guests involved in documenting your day by setting up an “I Spy” game. Provide them with a list of moments to capture on camera and upload to your wedding website. Include shots like “the bride and groom kissing” and “someone dancing crazy.” You’re sure to get some great pictures in addition to your professional photos. If you want, you can even offer a little prize to the guest who photographs the most items on the list.

8. Wedding Mad Libs: Who doesn’t love a game of Mad Libs? Write up a customized worksheet for your guests to fill out during cocktail hour. Have the DJ read the best ones between songs at the reception, or post them on your wedding website later. 9. Caricatures: Hire an artist to draw caricatures. Your guests will remember the experience and go home with a personalized souvenir from the day. 10.He said/she said: For this game, the bride and groom will both answer the same set of questions prior to the wedding. The questions can be anything from “What did you think of your spouse after the first date?” to “What do you love most about your spouse?” Have the DJ read the answers aloud and the guests can guess who gave which answer. Your wedding entertainment can be as unique and personalized as you want it to be. Remember that at the end of the day, this day is about you and your spouse. Keep your guests occupied, but also be sure that their attention is on you during the important moments. Plan ahead with your DJ so he or she can keep the party going at a pace you are happy with. Most of all, have fun with it—this day is a celebration of your new life with your other half, so make it memorable. —Chelsea Sherman

SWEETWATER CUISINE
DIAMONDS DIRECT
Catering and Event Specialist Jodi Newland Offers Some Inside Knowledge on Making Your Wedding a Dream Come True
Tery Vari, General Manager, Gives Advice On Buying The Perfect Engagement Ring
1) Let’s say I’m a bride who just got engaged and I have no clue where to begin. What are the first steps when starting to plan, and how can Sweetwater help? It is never too early to begin planning! One of the first things to consider is a venue. After choosing the venue you will know what services they offer in-house and can move forward. Sweetwater Cuisine offers a full-service approach with one-stop shopping. Not only do we have a venue, but we provide award-winning catering services, event design, floral packages and entertainment packages on-site. This makes it so easy for brides! If you have chosen another venue, we can provide off-site catering services and can provide rental services, as well. Your vision. Our artistry. It’s a perfect marriage! 2) Tell us a little bit about what sets apart Sweetwater’s Grits to Glam offerings from other caterers. Sweetwater offers both familiar comfort foods and amazing chef-crafted cuisine that will have your guests raving for years to come! We pride ourselves on beautiful food displays which incorporate the themes you have chosen for your event. Our stations and buffets are carefully designed to enhance your event and capture your vision. We strive to make each event unique. 3) What are some of the food and drink trends that you feel will never go out of style? Since we are a coastal city, you will always find seafood woven throughout our menus. However, we always are finding new ways to incorporate classics. For instance, our crab cakes are delicious and are one of our top sellers, but we also offer crab beignets and crab cheesecakes as options. These are similar flavor profiles, but different presentations. Other classics are filet of beef, fresh seasonal fruit, and artisan cheeses. These stay around in some form, even though presentation ideas are freshened up a bit. 4) Any new surprises or touches in the catering realm that you find could signal a new or lasting trend? While vintage-themed events have been around for several years, we are seeing elements of glamour and nature being added for a modern twist. While we are adding modern gold furniture to our station displays, we are adding wild game to our menus and fern to the bouquets. The place-settings are being transformed with vintage plates, but modern gold flatware and eclectic glassware. The seated, plated meal is making a strong comeback as events are becoming more formal.

What is the advantage to buying a loose diamond? It gives you a great view of the diamond from all angles. We recommend you compare different diamonds side by side in order to make the best decision. Can you explain a bit about the 4 C’s? Have an expert guide you on the 4 C’s of a diamond–cut, color, clarity and carat weight. Diamonds in the industry are rated in this manner so it is important to understand what you are looking at. How many different stones would you recommend looking at? View a selection of diamonds. You are not getting a true feel for different colors and clarities when only looking at one diamond. As experts in guidance, selection and education it is important to show our clients multiple offerings. Do you ever advocate purchasing a diamond online? We recommend never purchasing a diamond sight unseen. When purchasing online, you see the good and the bad. In our showroom, we keep the top 20 percent of all diamonds mined and manufactured. Diamond specifications may be exactly the same, but two diamonds could look totally different. At the end of the day it is best to buy a diamond with your eyes! Why is having an engagement ring budget important? By having a budget in mind, you will absolutely get the best value for superior cut graded diamonds at Diamonds Direct. Once you have gone through our education process, you will be able to view a variety of diamonds and choose the diamond that is perfect for you.

Disney’s Tangled Inspired This Fairytale Virginia Beach Wedding Compiled by Chelsea Sherman Photography by Angie McPherson Photography Who: Chelsea Laurens, doctor of physical therapy student at Old Dominion University, and Jaine Lindo, tax administrative assistant at Cherry Bekaert. When: June 11, 2016. Where: The Founders Inn and Spa, Virginia Beach. Guest List: Roughly 160 guests traveled from Roanoke, St. Maarten, Florida, North Carolina, Maryland, Oregon and even China. Where They Met: By chance during college when Chelsea was a freshman and Jaine was a senior. One day, they both happened to be visiting a friend in the dorms and met in the dorm lobby. Later that same day, they ran into each other again at Walmart. Chelsea asked Jaine to help her find an item, and he happily helped her search for it. As he searched—or rather, stalled—the two talked and got to know each other. It was the start of their wonderful adventure together. Engagement: Jaine surprised Chelsea by coming to town a day earlier than he had planned for Thanksgiving two years ago. They took a trip to the beach after work, and as they walked through the sand dunes, Chelsea suddenly heard a violinist playing “A Thousand Years” and saw purple petals positioned into a heart shape in the sand. Jaine asked Chelsea to spend the rest of her life with him, and she could not have been happier to say yes. Wedding Wishes: “Disney, Disney, Disney! I wanted it everywhere without being tacky,” Chelsea says. Having a stress-free wedding day was also very important to the couple, so they made sure to find a wedding planner they could trust. Holly Coriell of Just Dandy Events helped make their day go smoothly and took the stress off their shoulders. Having their pastor, Eric Thomas from First Baptist Church of Norfolk, there to provide a powerful message of selflessness and pray over their marriage with their closest friends and family was also one of the most important parts of the day for the couple. What’s Next: After their wedding, Jaine and Chelsea enjoyed a honeymoon at Disney World. Right now, Chelsea is focused on finishing school to become a doctor of physical therapy. “Jaine has been so patient with the demands that are put on me as a student, and he’s always been so supportive. I don’t know what I would do without him!” Chelsea says.

BRIDE: Gown and tiara—David’s Bridal GROOM: Suit—Bobby Macc TWIRLING HIS PRINCESS: Really, can it get more Disney than that? TWO LANDS APART: Chelsea’s sand was taken from Sandbridge in Virginia Beach, while Jaine’s was from his childhood home of St. Maarten. The sweet words on the unity sand set are taken from Pocahontas. It was appropriate for Jaine and Chelsea, who come from two different countries and who had a long distance relationship during college. BRIDAL BLING: Jaine picked out a yellow sapphire engagement ring for Chelsea. “I just told him that I wanted something small and unique, and he definitely delivered,” Chelsea says. Chelsea handmade the ring boxes bearing the enchanted flower from Tangled. FUR BABY: Chelsea fostered little Lee while working for a rescue in North Carolina. She loved him so much she decided to adopt him. “We are just a little family for now until we decide to have kids one day,” Chelsea says.
DECADENT CHOICES: For dessert, guests could choose from seven different cupcake flavors created by Bliss Bakery. “We wanted a way that everyone could get something they would like and even take some home with them,” Chelsea says. KEEP IN TOUCH: Chelsea found the idea for the Keep in Touch book on Pinterest. They used it for sending thank you cards, as well as sending birthday cards throughout the year. “It has been one of the best decisions of the day for sure,” Chelsea says. CEREMONY SOUNDTRACK: And I Love Her Violins provided the beautiful instrumental Disney songs during the ceremony and cocktail hour. Chelsea walked down the aisle to “I See the Light” from Tangled. BIRTHDAY SURPRISE: Everyone surprised Chelsea with a special cupcake for her birthday, which was the next day. They stopped the reception to sing “Happy Birthday” to her.

ENCHANTED FLOWERS: Chelsea’s bouquet was inspired by the enchanted flower in Tangled and the movie’s iconic colors, plum and yellow. Fluttering Flowers even added an LED light to make the flowers glow just like in the movie. IN REMEMBRANCE: Jaine’s father passed away, and Chelsea wanted to make sure she did something special to have him represented on his son’s wedding day. Chelsea made the special boutonniere photos for Jaine and his brother, the best man, and Jaine’s mother presented them to her sons as they got ready for the wedding. LITTLE PRINCESSES: Chelsea’s goddaughter and cousin shared flower girl duties. TASTEFUL TIARA: Chelsea wanted to feel like a princess on her big day, without doing anything too over the top. The tiara she chose was the first one she tried on. Right away she knew it added just the royal touch she was looking for. LANTERNS: The lantern centerpieces are reminiscent of the paper lanterns at the center of the Tangled storyline. Chelsea loved adding subtle touches from the movie wherever it was appropriate. PERFECT GENTLEMEN: The ring bearers were Chelsea’s cousin and her maid of honor’s son. The older boys who helped escort the guests are children Chelsea has been babysitting since they were in diapers. “They are like family to me, and it was extremely important to me that I included them,” Chelsea says.

Engagement: It was Thanksgiving weekend, and Kelly and Stephen were traveling back up to Harrisonburg, where they were living at the time. On the way back, the couple stopped at Keswick Vineyard. After a romantic day of wine tasting, Stephen knelt down next to the outdoor fireplace and popped the question. “It was raining, so it might not have seemed perfect to everyone else, but it was perfect to me,” Kelly remembers.
Wedding Wishes: “Our wedding was absolutely perfect and everything I dreamed of,” Kelly says. Being surrounded by family and friends at the venue she fell in love with at first sight, marrying the man of her dreams, was all she ever wanted. What’s Next: The Bests have been renovating a house since last October and are so happy to have established a beautiful place to start their life together.

BRIDE: Gown and veil—Ava Clara Bridal. GROOM: Suit—Jos. A. Bank. THE INN: Both lovers of history, Stephen and Kelly instantly fell in love with The Inn at Warner Hall, which is George Washington’s great-great-grandparents’ home. Wedding guests were able to explore the historic inn during cocktail hour. The wedding party also had the privilege of staying there during the wedding weekend. POPCORN FAVORS: “We wanted something different that people would actually snack on at the end of the night,” Kelly says. They ordered the handmade gourmet popcorn from Northern Neck Popcorn Bag in Kilmarnock.
INVITATIONS: Kelly picked the gorgeous floral invitations out at boutique paper store Papeterie in Kilmarnock. HERE IN SPIRIT: “My dad passed away about 10 years ago, and I wanted him to be part of the wedding,” Kelly says. The photo was a gift from Kelly’s cousin. OUTDOOR WEDDING: “We’ve both always wanted an outdoor wedding. Being history lovers and Southerners, it felt like it was in our roots to get married here,” Kelly says. WREATH: The monogram was a wedding shower gift, which the florist turned into a gorgeous wreath for the front door of the inn.

love SOMETHING BORROWED: The pendant bearing her late grandmother’s initials was placed on Kelly’s bouquet as her “something borrowed.” SURPRISE VEIL: Kelly brought Stephen wedding dress shopping with her to get his opinion on styles. Stephen expressed that he loved the idea of a cathedral veil, but Kelly had a hard time finding one and told him she wouldn’t be wearing one. “It was fun to surprise him with it at the wedding,” Kelly says.
GETTING READY IN STYLE: Kelly ordered the getting ready robes for her bridesmaids from Etsy. “I never really thought about there being a theme for the day, but everything ended up being these beautiful florals and coordinating really well,” Kelly says. ELEGANT CAKE: The couple chose a two-tiered cake accompanied by cupcakes from Cakes to Remember. The cake was a layer of key lime and a layer of coconut flavor. RECEPTION: The venue provided all the necessities for the reception, including tables, chairs and table covers. “They did a beautiful job and made the day that much easier,” Kelly says. SOFT FLORALS: Kelly has always known what her wedding colors would be. When it came time to plan, she shared her vision with Williamsburg Floral. They have done many weddings at the venue, so Kelly trusted they would come up with a beautiful plan that reflected her vision for her day. BIG WEDDING PARTY: Kelly’s bridesmaids were a mix of friends and family she’s known forever. “I knew I wanted a lot of friends by my side,” Kelly says. The groomsmen included Stephen’s brother and his close friends from high school and college.

Balloon from Jollity & Co.
Joyful Send-offs Helps Couples Create Memorable and Litter-Free Wedding Finales Last summer Laura McKay spent about five hours on a remote barrier island off Virginia’s coast and picked up more than 300 balloons and ribbons. "It was a real eye-opener!” says McKay, Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program Manager. "Clean-up events just in Virginia from 2010–2014 documented almost 5,000 pieces of balloon litter." In 2013 the Virginia Coastal Zone Management (CZM) Program held a marine debris summit which led to the creation of a Virginia Marine Debris Reduction Plan. The program quickly zeroed in on the deadliest debris to marine wildlife, and balloons were an obvious target. According to CZM, balloon litter poses one of the greatest risks to marine animals in terms of ingestion and entanglement. Balloons are mistaken for food such as jellyfish by sea turtles, and the ribbons on balloons are a major entanglement threat to birds and other animals on land and on the sea. Further research led to an understanding of who plans balloon release events—and, most importantly, why. Katie Register, director of Clean Virginia Waterways and co-lead of this effort noted that, “Weddings are of course happy occasions. Balloon releases are also planned for sad events, like memorials. Doing this research was necessary to inform what we hope will be a series of successful campaign and education efforts to reduce balloon releases and litter.” Findings led to the Joyful Send-off campaign kicking off in August 2017. Before launching, it was important that campaign leaders spoke and listened to brides about what a wedding sendoff ceremony meant to them. The campaign encourages send-off activities that provide memorable, joyful, picture-perfect, and litter-free alternatives to balloon releases. “We hope that brides and grooms will learn that all released balloons become litter and will not organize or participate in a balloon release in the years to come,” says Virginia Witmer, Virginia CZM Outreach Coordinator. Joyful Send-off is a project of the Virginia CZM Program funded through grants from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Marine Debris Program and Office of Coastal Management and with technical and financial support from Clean Virginia Waterways of Longwood University, as well as contributions from many others. On the website JoyfulSendoff.org, engaged couples will find many fun, memorable and picture-perfect send-off ideas. All of the ideas engage family and friends in a memorable celebratory send-off and have the added benefit of being litter-free. Some popular options include creating a curtain of bubbles or ribbon wands in a couple's wedding colors imprinted with their names and wedding date. "Making these wands together with family and friends prior to the wedding can be a fun and quite meaningful activity," says Register. "Bells can be added to the end of the wand so a joyful noise accompanies the waves of color during a wedding send-off. In the spring, flower petals offer a myriad of delightful color to a send-off, and in autumn, fall leaves against a bright blue sky are an amazing backdrop to a send-off. All of these send-off activities result in beautiful wedding pictures. "We have spoken with many future brides and grooms and heard that there is great interest in having a beautiful ceremony that is also respectful of the environment." says McKay. "It is a legacy a couple can start together at their wedding—and grow and share throughout their marriage." And the partners in the Joyful Send-off campaign are committed to helping and protecting and preserving Virginia’s environment. "Not only is this a goal of the programs we work for, but every day we each enjoy the natural beauty that Virginia has to offer," says Witner. "In the future, we hope to walk down the beach and in the waves, and find not balloons and other litter, but shells and other treasures from the sea." —MMS
