hether you’re a foodie, a history buff, a dedicated shopper, a water lover, a music fan or a festival junkie—Yorktown has what you need. Many people from Coastal Virginia make Yorktown one of their favorite daytrip destinations. Even better is to linger overnight or longer. Yorktown offers a wide array of lodging from charming bed and breakfast inns to stand-alone cottages to a riverfront hotel with a pool. For the foodies, Yorktown offers a variety of one-ofa-kind restaurants. Here, you can enjoy the perfect crab cake, avocado fries, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate and carrot cakes, signature seafood dishes, burgers and fishand-chips with flair and more. Shoppers can find unique local and regional art of national quality, gold jewelry made here, one-of-a-kind home goods and gifts. Make Room for the Memories.

An adventure of historic proportion is waiting for you—at two living-history museums that explore America’s beginnings. Board replicas of colonial ships. Grind corn in a Powhatan Indian village. Try on English armor inside a palisaded fort. Then, join Continental Army soldiers at their encampment for a firsthand look at the Revolution’s end. The history here is life size. And your memories will be even bigger! Save 20% with a combination ticket to both museums.

also book a sunset cruise, a Pirate Adventure, an informative sailing tour and/or a fishing trip. History buffs can stand under George Washington’s tent, walk along centuries-old earthworks, trace our nation’s history on a timeline, watch several films outlining history and learn about area watermen. If you get here early enough, enjoy the sunrise over the York River, and reward yourself with breakfast at the Duke of York Island Grille or Carrot Tree. After breakfast, head over to Yorktown National Battlefield, which opens at 9 a.m., earlier than some of the other attractions. Watch the introductory film and tour the battlefield, either alone or with a guide. Here, you can take a driving audio tour, sign your children or grandchildren up for the Junior Ranger program and see earthworks used first during the Revolutionary War and later during the Civil War.

Yorktown Victory Center is transitioning to American Revolution Museum at Yorktown in late 2016.

The Gallery at York Hall

Then, head to The Gallery at York Hall, which is both an art gallery and an information center with brochures, maps and area information so you can plan your day. Here, you can watch an informative film, check the local calendar and plan your day and evening. Take time to linger and look at the variety of art, including quilts, pottery and local/regional art. Check the calendar to see if there are local concerts. Online, go to VisitYorktown.org to see when the Fifes and Drums of Yorktown are playing—when you hear them, you’ll truly feel you have stepped back in time. If you’re planning time on the water—with Let’s Go Sail, the Schooners Alliance or Serenity or York River Charters—make reservations early in the day. If you want to have a profes4

sional photograph of your day, check with Alexander’s Photography. While you’re in the village, you can visit Nancy Thomas Gallery, Redcoat Antiques and Black Dog Gallery, where you can find a variety of art, antiques and gifts for others and yourself, of course. Check out On the Hill Gallery for both art and art classes for children and adults. For lunch, you have many choices, including Water Street Grille, where you can eat inside or outside with a view of the York River, or the Beach Delly. Save room for dessert at either the Carrot Tree for chocolate or carrot cake and/or Ben & Jerry’s for ice cream and specialty drinks. Walk or ride the trolley to Yorktown Victory Center, which is still open during the transition to the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown (late 2016). Here, you can experience a Continental Army encampment, visit a farm site and see films describing historic Yorktown battles, including the historic battle in 1781 that turned the corner on the Revolutionary War. A timeline chronicles key historic events. If you have time afterward, stop by the Watermen’s Museum. Also consider a Segway tour with Patriot Tours & Provisions—the Segways are easy to master and an excellent option also for people who have trouble walking. If you’re not extending your trip to a second day, plan to shop at Auntie M’s American Cottage, Viccellio Goldsmith, Yorktown Onion, Yorktown Bookshop and Patriot Tours and Provisions at Riverwalk Landing. For dinner, again choices abound. Riverwalk Restaurant is a favorite for many as are Duke of York Island Grille, Water Street Grille and the landmark Yorktown Pub. Water Street Grille and the Yorktown Pub both offer evening entertainment, and Riverwalk Restaurant offers a variety of special events throughout the year. If you made it through all of this in one day, congratulations. If not, mark your calendar for your next visit. v

hile most visitors to Yorktown drive their cars, an increasing number of visitors arrive by boats and cruise ships to enjoy the beach, restaurants, shops, museums, special events and more. From the pier, it’s a short walk to local attractions—or take the free Yorktown trolley. The public beach is a favorite for many visitors to enjoy a picnic and the view. Also available are private bathrooms with showers for boaters as well as water, electricity and many other amenities. Yorktown hosts about a dozen cruise ship visits each year and is

the homeport to the Schooners Alliance and Serenity. This year, the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokulea will dock at Riverwalk Landing April 24 through May 8 as part of its worldwide voyage. The Spirit of Bermuda and The Schooner America plan a trip to Yorktown in early to mid July. Many tall ships also visit throughout the year. Whether you arrive by powerboat or sailboat, the Yorktown pier has a slip to suit your watercraft and attractions to make you glad that you docked here for a day, an evening or a weekend. v

Find Your Park— Yorktown Battlefield While you’re in Yorktown, take time to learn some history and experience where history was made. Here you can plug into the National Park Service’s new Find Your Park program to discover Yorktown your way—on foot, on a bike, by car and with hands-on activities. Find Your Park celebrates the national park system’s 100th anniversary. “You can drive or bike through Yorktown Battlefield and the Colonial Parkway,” says York-

town Battlefield superintendent Kym Hall. “You can learn about the Battle of Yorktown, the decisive victory that solidified our independence from British rule. You can go to Surrender Field where the British actually surrendered to the French and American soldiers.” You might choose to quietly walk through the cemetery where French and American soldiers are buried. Or, you could meditate under George Washington’s tent, perhaps imagining you’re one of the select few who were allowed inside during the war we now call the Revolutionary War. You can tour the battlefield and

watch a film at the visitor center. You might prefer a more hands-on experience with interpretative programs about black powder rifles and tools used during the war. You can also learn about the families who built houses here and the role they played in creating a new country. “You can understand history as you walk down Main Street and see a connection to life as it was in the 1760s, seeing all the historic homes and thinking of all the trade that came through here then,” Hall says. “For you, it might be looking out over the battlefield and contemplating what our ancestors fought for, why they fought and why this country matters. Yorktown is a place to contemplate the true birth of our country.” “We want people to have the chance to reconnect to history and reconnect to nature,” Hall says. “People might be looking for fitness, understanding history, quiet, or wildlife viewing. This is public land, a piece of American history, set aside for their enjoyment. This is about finding whatever story matters to you. There are a lot of different ways people can find their park here.”

Yorktown Victory Center Evolving To American Revolution Museum at Yorktown The Yorktown Victory Center, long a staple of visits to the historic riverfront city, is being transformed to the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Work began in 2012 and will be complete late 2016. The Yorktown Victory Center remains open during the transition. The new 80,000-square-foot building is already open where visitors can enjoy showings of Revolution-themed films and glimpse future exhibits. The new name will be in place this fall. A new introductory film and exhibition galleries will debut with a preview of the new museum Oct. 15 and 16 during the annual Yorktown Victory Celebration event. v

rom spring to fall and south to north, York County is becoming a go-to destination for craft beer and breweries, wine dinners and wine and beer festivals. Yorktown kicks off the season the first Saturday in May with the Blues, Brews and BBQ festival on May 7. On Oct. 1, the Yorktown Wine Festival attracts wine lovers from all over Coastal Virginia. In between are Steal the Pint Nights at Water Street Grille with craft beers and the chance to take the glass home with you. Riverwalk Restaurant hosts wine dinners, including an annual favorite, the Bastille Day Wine Dinner on July 14. Take a scenic drive up the Colonial Parkway, and you’ll find three craft breweries in upper York County. The Virginia Beer Company opened this spring on Second Street with a taproom aimed at all ages, co-founder Chris Smith says. Williamsburg’s AleWerks Brewing Company is a longtime staple of upper York County and now has a neighbor on Mooretown Road, the Brass Cannon, which has relocated to York County. “We appeal to millenials first and foremost,” Smith says. “Baby boomers are huge consumers of craft beer, too. We have a nice mix of older people and younger people.” Smith also has reached out to area retirees. The Virginia Beer Company offers a family-friendly nook for kids with games and chalkboards. Children can drink water and soda, and Smith hopes to make soda on site in the future. Instead of competing, the three local breweries are making the area a destination for sampling craft beer, Smith says. In fact, The Virginia Beer Company has collaborated on a beer with AleWerks Brewing Company. “Since there are several brewers, people are going to come, visit all of them, and stay overnight,” he says. v

ationally known contemporary artist Nancy Thomas considered moving to Norfolk to be closer to family, but after almost 50 years in Yorktown, she couldn’t bear to leave. “When I come back from Norfolk, the minute I hit Cook Road, I feel at peace,” Thomas says. Thomas, who started working from her Yorktown home in the 1970s, opened her shop across from the courthouse in 1991. She later added a production facility on U.S. 17. This year she’s moving production back to her home base in Yorktown. The goal is to return to her roots—to a smaller, more intimate setting for her work, her artists’ work and shows. “My whole business will be here where I am,” Thomas says. “I’ll be able to walk over and talk to my painters. I’ll be able to live here, have my gallery and production all in one place.” Visitors to the shop will notice her popular prints of the months of the year. Originally, she created them to sell individually, but many buyers wanted all 12. Now you can get that original set, as well as a flower-themed set, an animals set and a children’s set. The first set was eight inches by eight inches. The largest set now is 24-by-24. “They have sold like the Cabbage Patch dolls,” Thomas says, referring to the popular, fast-selling dolls of the 1980s. Also popular are her prints of the states. At press time, she had completed 36 and hoped to have all 50 done by summer. These, too, started as original pieces, and then a buyer wanted all the states. For Thomas, Yorktown is a place that not only inspires her art but also brings her peace. “I love it,” she says. “I thought about moving, but this is the place. My kids grew up here. They had the whole Yorktown Battlefield as a playground. With Riverwalk, we have a little bit of a downtown. Everyone is friendly and cordial here, but they’re not intrusive. It’s an ideal place. If I didn’t live here, this would be the place I would come to do my artwork.” v

orktown is an easy drive from all of Coastal Virginia, making the historic riverfront town a perfect day trip destination for shopping at unique boutiques and galleries, brushing up on history, spending time on the water and dining in a variety of restaurants. But staying overnight or longer gives you the chance to enjoy a local brew night or wine tasting with no worries about driving, see the sun rise on the York River, savor a tasty breakfast and pack more fun into your second day. Whether you’re looking for a bed and breakfast inn, a private cottage or a traditional hotel with a pool and a river view, Yorktown rolls out the welcome mat for overnight guests. The Marl Inn Bed & Breakfast is under new ownership this year and offers five rooms, each with a private bathroom and private entrance. Depending on taste and budget, guests can opt for a full breakfast, a continental breakfast or no breakfast. Owners Apostolos and Amy Demetry bought the inn the summer of 2015 and host bridal parties, church retreats and small family reunions. “We have a lot of privacy with the coziness of a bed and breakfast,” Amy Demetry says. The Demetrys fell in love with the inn and Yorktown at first sight. “We had been thinking of purchasing an inn for five years,” she says. “We drove by and knew this was the one. We love the Yorktown Fife and Drums—we can hear them practicing on Wednesday nights. I love the history of Yorktown. Any free time I get, I’m either reading novels or non-fiction about the Revolutionary War. The battle that really sealed the deal was right here. The cannonballs were sailing right over our property.” The Demetrys have enjoyed getting to know Yorktown, taking time to be tourists when they can. “We love to bike around Yorktown Battlefield,” Amy Demetry says. “We enjoy the National Park Service visitor center and the Yorktown Victory Center. We walk nearly every night along the waterfront.” v yo r k tow n
