It’s one of the first things an engaged couple does that really defines the tone of their big day—setting the date. Some brides dream of a winter wedding with snow and a fur coat, while others want to dance outside on a summer night with family and friends. With so many changing styles and trends between seasons, Central Virginia Bridal Guide wanted to set a new date as well. We are very excited to release this first ever Spring/ Summer Edition. Our goal is to help brides-to-be have the most pertinent, current and seasonal information as they plan their perfect event. In this issue, we are tackling another major decision for a couple—the venue. Before you fall in love with a location or sign a contract, you will want to read about the 10 questions you should ask first on page 9. Getting these answers will help you make a more informed decision and save you some headaches down the road. We are also helping you with perhaps the next big item on a bride and groom’s list—the photos. The Knot did a survey and found that 9 out of 10 couples hire a professional and the amount they are willing to spend is going up each year. So make sure you get your money’s worth! On page 19, check out advice from local brides on how to make sure you capture those “best moments.” If you like to keep your style with what’s trending, get inspiration from our photo feature starting on page 25. Our gorgeous models show off some of the top looks from Ashley Grace Bridal at Bedford Columns. inding the perfect wedding venue can be overwhelming. Beyond looking for the picture-perfect backdrop for
your big day, there are many other things to consider: parking, linens, staffing, etc. When touring different venues, it’s easy to fall in love with the location. But be sure to read the fine print. Before you sign a contract, be prepared with these 10 questions:

HOW MANY TABLES AND CHAIRS CAN YOU PROVIDE? It’s important to know how many guests the venue can accommodate. Also, ask to see the tables and chairs that will be used. If the furniture doesn’t match your style, ask if the venue would allow a rental company to provide tables and chairs for your event.
DO YOU INCLUDE LINENS? Some venues offer linen service, but some do not. Ask what kind of tablecloths, table runners, and napkins are available, if any. The most common color palettes are white and cream. If you’re looking for something different, you may want to get an estimate from a third-party linen service that offers more variety.
DO YOU PROVIDE SIGNAGE TO DIRECT GUESTS TO EVENTS ON PROPERTY? This little detail goes a long way. Guests will feel more relaxed if they know exactly where to go for the ceremony, appetizers, dinner, dancing, and the send-off. If the venue doesn’t include signage, consider bringing your own or renting signs from a local company like Vintage or Scripted (look them up on Facebook for style inspiration). Using antique mirrors or chalkboard signs is a great way to incorporate your wedding theme. Plus, the signs can communicate information about where to sit, what’s on the menu, and what hashtag to use.

WHERE WILL GUESTS PARK, AND HOW MANY CARS DOES THE PARKING LOT ACCOMMODATE? Make sure there’s room for everyone on your guest list. Ask yourself how the parking will impact your guests. Will the ladies be walking through a dirt or gravel lot in heels? Will guests have to park on the street and walk a considerable distance wearing formal attire? If the parking situation is complex, give your guests advance notice on your wedding website.
WHAT’S THE BACK-UP PLAN FOR BAD WEATHER? “Start imagining your wedding while you walk the grounds,” says Julie Hostler at The 1752 Estate. Imagine a variety of weather, too. What if it rains? What about high winds? Will the temperature be too hot or too cold? The right venue will have solutions for each of these scenarios.
DO YOU PROVIDE STAFFING FOR SERVING, SET UP, CLEAN UP, ETC.? You’d be surprised how many venues don’t provide any staff at all. The church where I got married had no staffing arrangements for cleaning up, so my bridal party had to work overtime. Ask in advance if your venue will provide an event coordinator, audio/ visual support, food service professionals, and a cleaning crew.
WHAT KIND OF FEES DO YOU CHARGE? “No one likes to be surprised with hidden costs,” says Hostler. “Always ask what is included in the price.” In addition to rental fees, your venue may charge booking fees, setup fees, management fees, etc. Don’t be caught off guard by these extra fees—ask about them up front.

WHAT RULES DO WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT? Venues often establish a set of guidelines for event use. For example, some venues might not allow pets or alcohol on premises. You should know about such restrictions before signing a contract. If you come across a rule that will affect your plans, see if they will make an exception for your wedding. It never hurts to ask!
WHAT KIND OF PACKAGES DO YOU OFFER? Every venue is unique. Ask about different rental packages, what they include, and the pricing. Kelly Heckman at Winridge Manor offers some great advice about selecting a package that will fit your style. “If you are a bride who adores DIY projects and really wants to have a ‘handson’ creative touch for your special day, ask your venue about packages that allow this. If you are a bride who wants very little stress and you prefer to have everything done for you, find an all-inclusive package.”
CAN YOU PROVIDE REFERENCES? Your venue should have a list of satisfied customers. Ask if you can contact their references, and check sources like Yelp and the venue’s Facebook page to read reviews. Ultimately, you want to know that other brides were happy with the venue and its services.

Choosing the right wedding photographer is certainly one of the most important wedding decisions you will make, but it is also important to know what kind of photos you do and don’t want and to communicate with your photographer to ensure that you are on the same page. My mom found the website of Megan Vaughan Photography one day, and her style stood out to us so we decided to contact her to see if she was available. Luckily, she was!” Allen and Prue Miller, who married in July 1980 at their Richmond church, had a friend take their wedding photos. “A friend of mine took our wedding pictures,” Prue says. “He was a fairly good photographer and offered that as a gift to us. We were trying to save money and decided that would be one way we could.He got some

great pictures... and some not so great! I wish we had hired a professional photographer! Even though many of our wedding photos were good,

#2: USE PINTEREST AS A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION, NOT REPLICATION Although Pinterest is an invaluable source of wedding inspiration, try not to obsess over recreating every shot you’ve pinned. “I had plenty of ideas I had seen on Pinterest, but I didn’t want an overload of these ideas, as I was ready and willing to go with the flow as well and let Megan bring her experience and ideas to the table,” Amanda says. “It’s so easy to come with an overwhelming amount of ideas and trends in your head, but sometimes it’s better to come with an open mind. At the end of the day, it didn’t matter if I got that perfect Pinterest shot I had seen online—I had a collection of unique photos to call my own, with memories of one of the most special occasions of my life.”

#3: REQUEST PLENTY OF CANDID SHOTS Candid shots often end up being our favorite shots (in general, not just for weddings) because they capture raw, genuine emotion. “Ask for lots of candids!” Prue advises. “They record the ‘moment’ but also capture the emotions! They also allow the bride and groom to see what was going on that day that they might otherwise have missed. My favorite picture is a candid our friend snapped just after the ceremony when my brand new husband and I had left the sanctuary and

were waiting outside the church before going back in to take photographs. He captured the excitement, the pure joy of the moment!” Amanda’s favorite photo is a candid shot of her father, Stephen Hodge, escorting her down the stairs before the ceremony. “In the image I am walking in front, and my dad is holding the train of my gown, looking over the banister at the camera with a large grin on his face,” she says. “It is such a precious image snapped within very crucial seconds, and you can feel his pride and joy emulate from the picture.”

Of course, not every wedding photo can or should be a candid shot; you want to ensure that special people and moments from your day are documented. “There were certain photos of various wedding traditions I knew I wanted to have captured,” Amanda says. “[Among these photos were] the picture of my groom’s face when his bride starts walking down the aisle, the first kiss as a married couple, cutting the cake and putting it on each other’s face, and running through the wave of sparklers to the getaway car. Another favorite picture is of Kegan and me holding hands behind a door. We decided to hold hands and pray together instead of a first look photo. We couldn’t see each other but could feel the emotion in the moment.”

As Prue explains, “We did come up with a list ahead of time so that we would be sure to get photographs of all the people and groups we wanted to. Be sure and get photos with elderly people who are important to you. One of my favorites is of us with my paternal grandparents who have both since died. My grandfather is by my side and my grandmother is by Allen’s side, holding his hand. I still get choked up when I look at it!”

you can do in your wedding photographs— both in terms of how you look and how you act in front of the camera. When Bryan and I first got engaged, I pretty much immediately got on Pinterest and started pinning elaborate hairstyle and makeup ideas that bore little to no resemblance to my everyday look. As our wedding drew closer, however, I found that I was feeling anxious about pulling off these new styles. I decided to keep my hair and makeup simple and similar to my daily look (I added a bit of drama by wearing red lipstick), and I’m so glad I did. The comfort I felt in how I looked definitely shows in our wedding photos. Additionally, because Bryan and I are both on the introverted side, we didn’t take any overthe-top silly photos with our bridal party. I love looking at other people’s intentionally funny bridal party photos, but we probably would have made it look forced! Regardless of your and your spouse’s personalities (which may be quite different!), your photos will come across as genuine if you are both true to yourselves.

Another Millennial trend is the “naked cake.” Before you Google that and get yourself into trouble, a naked cake is frosted between the layers but not on the sides. Between the layers might be crammed with icing, candies or fruit, for example, but the sides are bare. Thus, “naked cake.” Some brides are choosing not to have cake at all. “Most of my brides are thinking uniquely,” Morgan said. “They might not even have cake. They might have little pies for everyone. Not so much the cupcakes anymore, but they’re looking for something a little different.” With Millennials, “something a little different” appears to be a trend in itself. “The more different anything is, I love it,” Sutton said. “I love it, love it, love it. I think anyone should do anything. I think people get excited about, ‘No one’s done this. I’m going to do it.”

“Myrtle Beach is always popular,” said Steve Arthur, owner and president of Travel Lovers in Lynchburg.

THE TIDES INN – Irvington, Va. “If you’re looking for a couples’ getaway, and making a long weekend out of it, definitely take advantage of our activities on site,” said Laurie Eichman, catering and conference service manager. One popular activity for couples is riding bikes through the town of Irvington, stopping at shops and the vineyard. “We have a cove cruise on site,” she said. “That’s a really fun activity if you want to get out on the water. It takes you around some of the hidden coves... you get to learn a little bit about the area and the history with the oysters.” Passengers also get to see some of the spots where oystering takes place. “It’s really fun, especially if you’re a history nerd like me,” Eichman said. Additionally, the Inn has a restaurant on site, and they offer private dining for the couples who prefer to have a romantic dining experience away from everyone else. Another cozy place on site is the pool and beach area, which includes a fire pit for s’mores, or just for enjoying the ambiance of the warm flickering flames. “We also have a spa on site, so we could do a couples’ massage,” Eichman said. “We also have an 18-hole golf course, so if they are golfers, that might be the spot for them.” “We’ve had honeymooners ever since the Inn opened,” Eichman said. And because the Inn opened in 1947, there are now many second and third generation honeymooners. Couples are also choosing to have their wedding reception at the Inn where their grandparents honeymooned. “Once you’re on the Northern Neck and you’re surrounded by the water…it does feel like you’re a world away,” Eichman said.

BERRY HILL RESORT – South Boston, Va. “We are a full service property, which means that honeymooners can come and park their cars for the weekend, and there’s no need to leave,” said Bill Kirkhuff, general manager. “You can come and spend the weekend enjoying yourself and taking it easy, without having to use your car all the time.” Guests are invited to enjoy two restaurants, a European spa with full spa treatments, and an indoor pool. For couples who enjoy being outdoors, there are hiking and biking trails. “We have lots of outdoor things to do,” Kirkhuff said. Nestled in a forest on 650 acres, Berry Hill Resort is also a historical property that history lovers will love to explore. The former plantation has been renovated many times, yet still maintains its Southern charm. Some of the buildings on the property date back to 1790. Although the estate has had various owners throughout the years, Benjamin Harrison, fourth Governor of Virginia and signer of the Declaration of Independence, was one of them. “We’re an independent hotel, so it’s not cookie cutter. It’s not like every other Marriott you’ve been in,” he said. “We have a good staff, and I’m told it’s just a very refreshing experience.” The Resort offers a romance package which includes deluxe queen accommodations, fruit, cheese and iced champagne in your room, three course dinner in the Mansion Dining Room and an after-dinner cordial in the Library Bar. “We’re a wonderful place to make memories,” Kirkhuff said. “We’re not huge like some of the other Virginia resorts where you just get lost in the crowd. There’s a lot of individual attention.”

For all persons 18 years of age and older, the couple must both go in person to complete and sign the application. Acceptable forms of identification include driver’s license, passport, military ID or state ID. Persons under the age of 18 must provide notarized consent from parents or legal guardians.
There are no blood tests or exams necessary for a marriage license in the state of Virginia.
WHEN TO APPLY: You can apply up until the day of the wedding. The license must be used within 60 days of issue. The license will be issued upon completion and acceptance of the application. This must be completed by the officiant performing the ceremony. Check with your officiant to see if he or she will also send in the completed application or if you need to take care of that yourself.
REMARRIAGES: Applicants will be required to give an accurate account on all previous marriages.
