Come enjoy our picture perfect beaches, charming towns and beautiful, rural landscapes any time of year. From the sophisticated storefronts of Rehoboth to the laid back boardwalk in Bethany Beach, this oceanfront area of southern Delaware truly has something for everybody. Explore historic villages, escape into the coastal forest for hiking and biking, or just find a spot on the sandy shores and relax the day away listening to the waves roll in. Of course, one of the most popular activities here is shopping, which has the distinction of being sales tax-free. Meander down the sidewalks of our quaint towns, stopping to browse for antiques, designer clothes, unique gifts, one-of-a-kind art and much, much more. Or head to our famous outlet malls, where good deals come standard. From the southeastern-most tip of Fenwick Island to the point of Cape Henlopen State Park, the main attraction is the ocean. But as you venture inland, you will find museums, cultural events and festivals throughout the year plus exciting outdoor adventures. Explore inland bays on a kayak or sailboat, or try your hand at windsurfing or skim boarding on the Atlantic Ocean. An artistic and eclectic community, this region is rich in cultural and arts organizations. Art galleries, symphony orchestras and theaters come together to make the Delaware Beaches more than your average coastal community. There is a wealth of exciting attractions, entertainment and nightlife, all with the beautiful sandy beaches as a backdrop. All this, complemented by an eclectic restaurant scene full of intimate eateries and gourmet restaurants, and you have one of the midAtlantic’s favorite year-round destinations. We invite you to take in all this region has to offer, from the sun-soaked beaches to the bustling sidewalks. On the next few pages, you’ll find all the best places to eat, play, stay and shop in the Delaware Beaches. c

Enjoy your stay!

real estate

Buying at the Beach

OWNING A HOUSE ON ONE OF DELAWARE’S PRISTINE BEACHES IS EASIER THAN YOU MIGHT THINK, AND NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME TO BUY The crashing waves, the gorgeous beaches, the salty breeze wafting from the water and the endless supply of activities—what’s not to love about this place? Perhaps you feel so at home during your stay that you’re considering making the Delaware Beaches a permanent home or possibly a secondary one. Buying a home here is easier than you may think— and the perks are better than you’d ever imagine. The first pleasant surprise that most homebuyers encounter is the affordable aspect of purchasing a home on Delaware’s coast. Those who plan to finance their home will be delighted to learn that interest rates have been at an all-time low for several years. Whether you’re looking to buy a luxurious beach house boasting immaculate views of the water or something a little farther inland, the selection is endless, and with a little assistance from one of Delaware’s superior real estate agencies, you’re sure to find the home that’s perfect for you. Along with being an affordable purchase, many Delaware homebuyers have discovered that purchasing real estate is a profitable investment, especially if you decide to rent it to out-of-towners. With the successful tourism industry in the cities of Rehoboth, Lewes, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach and Fenwick, it’s likely that your house could be rented for much of the year. However, you’ll want to save a few weeks for yourself and your family to enjoy a blissful vacation in the comfort of your very own home. Imagine being able to visit this coastal seclusion any time of the year and how relaxing it would be to never have to make lodging accommodations for a vacation again. By investing in a secondary home on Delaware’s coast, you’ll have the option of visiting your home away from home whenever you want. Purchasing a home—even if it’s a secondary home—is a big decision, so it’s important to feel comfortable with your real estate agent and communicate your preferences when discussing various housing options. This way you’ll ensure that the house you choose is the perfect one for you. c DBVG13_PAGES.indd 9

Decorating Your

Coastal Cottage Once you find your perfect home, you’ll love decorating your new space to transform it to coastally couture. Here are a few tips on embellishing your breezy beach home.

• Seaglass is the Coastal Color of the Year, according to Coastal Living. Experiment with cool and calming tones of blue, green and turquoise, and apply it to anything from wall colors to throw pillows. • Invest in quality outdoor furniture. For most of the spring, summer and even fall, your deck or porch will serve as a main living space since people tend to congregate in places with gentle breezes and magnificent views. Therefore your outdoor furniture should be durable enough to withstand the outdoor elements—but it also should be comfortable and classy, too. • Forgo the dark shades and heavy curtains, and opt for spaces that are centered around light. Picture a sitting room with crisp, white furniture and breezy curtains (or no curtains at all) to play up the natural light flooding through the windows. • Southern Living says to be bold. Try some vibrant hues in certain spaces such as a porch or balcony. If painting the walls and floors is a little too daring, try incorporating some fun colors with your furniture. Adirondack chairs are available in a rainbow of hues and would add a bright punch to any outdoor space. • Accessorize nautically. Start a collection of water-inspired artwork to hang in prominent spaces; bonus if they’re locally painted! Other coastal must-haves include lush house plants to bring the outdoors in, pillows and rugs in nautical patterns and shell or sea glass collections displayed in bowls or vases. 2013/2014 | Delaware Beaches | 9

for Every Interest

Whether you come for the family fun, the romantic leisure or the exhilarating activities, you’ll find it all in the state of Delaware By Jessica Scheck Just as no two places are alike and no two people are alike, it’s also true that no two vacations are alike. Luckily the experiences in this East Coast state aren’t tailored to any one specific type of person or family. The region is so varied that it’s easy to customize your own vacation with activities and excursions that fit your idea of fun. No matter if you’re looking for an enjoyable family getaway, a romantic trip for two or an adventuresome journey filled with outdoor options galore, there’s a vacation itinerary to fit your one-of-a-kind personality.

Saturday Get your family up and out of bed for a sun and fun-filled beach day! The beach is the perfect place to splash in the waves with your family, and best of all—it’s free! LA CAGE AUX FOLLES Opens June 27. Summer Season. Welcome to the home of Zaza and the notorious Les Cagelles, where glitz, glamour, and “A Little More Mascara” are the norm. Georges, the manager, and Albin, the star of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, a premier drag nightclub, are faced with a dilemma when their son Jean-Michel announces his engagement to a girl – a girl whose father’s mission is to take down the club in the name of tradition, family, and morality. This often hilarious and genuinely touching musical puts family ties to the test, as sequins and saintliness clash and everyone struggles to bravely declare, “I Am What I Am.” 20 Baltimore Ave. (Beach Block), Rehoboth Beach. 302-644-3810. www.clearspaceproductions.org. THE SOUND OF MUSIC Opens July 1. Season Season. First a Broadway Musical featuring Mary Martin, then an Academy Award winning film starring Julie Andrews; now Clear Space will mount this worldwide classic her at the beach this summer. The staunch Captain Von Trapp takes on a new governess, Maria– a nun too free spirited for any convent– to look after his over-disciplined children. She soon introduces the rebellious brood to art and freedom– commodities largely foreign in this militaristic household– and eventually wins the affections of the entire Von Trapp family. Told through countless musical theatre standards, such as “Edelweiss”, “My Favorite

Things”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, “Do-Re-Mi”, and the title song “The Sound of Music”, experience an evening of family, friends and love with this iconic musical. 20 Baltimore Ave. (Beach Block), Rehoboth Beach. 302-644-3810. www.clearspaceproductions.org. RADIO GAGA: A GLEE-FUL MUSIC EVENT Opens July 12. Summer Season. With musical theatre taking over TV screens across America, it’s only fitting that Clear Space brings you a live version to rock out with all summer long! This musical revue, with a brand-new concept, takes today’s biggest radio hits and gives them the Broadway treatment, with new arrangements, orchestrations, and significance. Pop music’s hottest artists – Adele, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Beyonce, and more – will take over the stage through our talented ensemble of vocalists. An entirely new sound for us, we know if you tune into the radio, you’ll go gaga for this show! 20 Baltimore Ave. (Beach Block), Rehoboth Beach. 302-644-3810. www.clearspaceproductions.org. MAY

Bethany Beach & Fenwick Island The Quiet Resorts With bustling Ocean City on one side and the serene Delaware Seashore State Park on the other, the towns of Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island are sandwiched between two extremes. Roller coasters and arcades buzz to the south, while birds and the occasional dolphin set the scene up north. These two beach communities, known as the “quiet resorts,” seem to have adjusted to their opposing neighbors quite well, combining the excitement and amenities of the boardwalk with the beauty and serenity of nature. Today, the area is known as an ideal retreat for families and the perfect environment for a laidback beach getaway. The community of Bethany Beach actually began as a church retreat, and while vacationers of all lifestyles fill the many condos and homes today, it still fulfills the expectations of those seeking a quiet seaside vacation. With loads of attractions just a short drive away, it is an ideal location for those who crave the serenity of the beach but also want quick access to more high-intensity fun and attractions.

The atmosphere in Bethany is decidedly laid-back—folks spend the day on the beach, occasionally stopping in at area shops, restaurants and cafes to visit with friends, peruse the merchandise or fill up until the next meal. A short half-mile boardwalk is also a great place to stroll and enjoy the ocean views; stop in the few shops, restaurants and activities that line the walkway. Regular concerts at the boardwalk bandstand provide entertainment during the summer months. Though Bethany Beach definitely has that small-town atmosphere, it also has all the modern amenities and services you could ask for such as great shopping, restaurants and plenty of things to do. The same can be said of Fenwick Island, which lies right on the Delaware-Maryland state line, just north of Ocean City. Still quiet and laid-back, Fenwick offers some of the cleanest beaches in the region.

One of the most popular attractions in Fenwick is the Fenwick Island Lighthouse, an 89-foot lighthouse built in 1858. The towering white beacon is open for tours, although visitors are prohibited from climbing the tower. Whether your idea of paradise involves a beach towel and a surfboard or a good meal and a day of shopping, the “quiet resorts” of Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island are sure to please. For more information about Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island and surrounding areas, contact the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-962-SURF or visit www.bethany-fenwick.org c

Rehoboth & Dewey Beach An old-fashioned beach destination with a modern flair, Rehoboth Beach is one of the midAtlantic’s most popular beach towns. The town has garnered the nickname, “The Nation’s Summer Capital,” but Rehoboth is truly a year-round destination with quality entertainment, dining, shopping and recreation. The Rehoboth boardwalk area is about a mile long and includes a small amusement park, some arcades, restaurants, shops and many places to grab an afternoon snack. On summer weekends, there are frequently festivals, art shows and concerts right on the boardwalk. Of course, relaxing in the rays is one of the main reasons people come to Rehoboth. The beaches are clean and spacious enough for folks to spread out and enjoy a little time in the sun. The ocean is perfect for swimming, surfing or just leisurely floating in the waves. At night, the town continues to sizzle, with nightly concerts at the oceanfront, popular downtown hotspots and bars to mingle with friends. Many also head to nearby Dewey Beach for a night out on the town. Dewey, a more casual and smaller

version of Rehoboth, features many popular bars and clubs that attract crowds into the wee hours. A trolley connects to the two towns in the summer. In both Rehoboth and Dewey Beach, there are also loads of recreational activities. Participate in dolphin watching or a nature cruise, rent a boat and explore on your own, or take a few sailing lessons on the Rehoboth or Delaware Bays. Canoe and kayak outings led by nature experts are both informative and fun. Or earn your dinner by surf fishing, deep-sea fishing, clamming or crabbing. Biking is a popular way to get around Rehoboth and Dewey, especially considering the summer traffic. Rent a bike and explore each town, or enjoy an early morning ride on the boardwalk. Bike rental companies may suggest longer trails in the area or a scenic ride through one of the many state parks. Both Rehoboth and Dewey Beach offer a worldclass beach getaway that is both eclectic and oldfashioned. From the boardwalk to the boutiques, these two towns are full of excitement year round. For more information about Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach, call 800-441-1329, or visit www.beach-fun.com c

The First Town In The First State A stroll around historic Lewes will immediately reveal the town’s deep history and seafaring heritage. In fact, the town is more than 375 years old, and today it continues to work to preserve and honor its heritage as the first town in the first state. As with many colonial seaports, Lewes was also at the mercy of pirates for much of its history. Several times in the 1600s, the town was raided by pirates, and as the legend goes, the famous pirate Captain Kidd buried a chest of gold in the Cape Henlopen sand dunes. This prompted the city to pass a law requiring all citizens to own a musket and ammunition to protect themselves from future raids. While you won’t find today’s citizens bearing muskets, there are still many reminders of Lewes’ enchanting history around every corner. Visit the Zwaanendael Museum to get an in-depth view of the town’s history. Built in 1931, the building is an adaptation of the old Stadhuis (City Hall) in Hoorn, the Netherlands. Changing and permanent exhibits detail the story of Cape Henlopen and the H.M.S. DeBraak, and showcase material culture of the surrounding area. Above all, Lewes is a marvelous place to spend a day just walking around. The streets are alive with people year-round who are all enjoying the gorgeous architecture, beautifully preserved homes, museums and scenic streets. Downtown is ideal for pedestrians— within an area of approximately one square half-mile, you’ll find the alluring historic district filled to

Lewes the brim with more than 40 unique shops, fine restaurants, inns B&Bs and more. Nearby, bay and ocean beaches offer limitless recreational activities amidst beautiful unspoiled nature. There are thousands of acres of preserved lands in Cape Henlopen State Park, including beautiful beaches, miles of nature trails, bird sanctuaries and an education center. Of course, one of the most popular ways to enjoy the Delaware Bay is aboard the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. Enjoy an 80-minute cruise as a passenger, or travel with your car. You can even explore another great coastal town at the other end of the journey—Cape May, New Jersey. Whether you spend the day learning about Lewes’ history, enjoying the beach and beautiful maritime nature, finding unique treasures to bring home or all three, you’re bound to come to one realization—one day in Lewes just isn’t enough. c

There are more than a dozen public courses in the area, each with a distinctive layout and atmosphere. From coastal marshes to farmland and forests, the Delmarva Peninsula’s varying terrain creates a wonderful canvas for any golf architect. Famous course designers have contributed their talents to molding this seaside landscape into stunning fairways and greens, creating championship courses and many memorable holes. Nature definitely defines Southern Delaware and Maryland golf. There are many fairways framed by towering pines, coastal wetlands, lakes, rivers and streams. Don’t be surprised if you are joined by herons, deer and other wildlife, even just a few miles away from the bustling beaches. If it’s a visually striking scene a golfer is looking for, head to the Bear Trap Dunes for a unique experience with varieties of sand dunes and native wetland grasses that complement the natural landscape of the oceanfront. The club offers a unique design of courses by architect Rick Jacobson, which have won acclaim in the area. The unique terrain is not only visually stimulating but also provides rare challenges that test a golfer’s ability. Bayside Resort Gold Club incorporates many of the natural characteristics of Ocean City, including the dense clusters of trees, which this club has kept for lining the fairways. The courses at Bayside also give the golfer splendid views of the Assawoman Bay right from the green, keeping any athlete calm and focused on the game. Another visually stunning course is the Baywood Greens public golf course. Surrounded by breezy willow trees and calm waterways, this course is perfect for a relaxing round of golf. Many of the landscapes were sketched and brought to life with more than 200,000 plants, showcasing beautifully arranged artistry and excellent scenes for the best day of golf. In spite of the gorgeous surroundings, don’t get too relaxed. There are definitely some challenging holes on area courses—challenging enough that golfers keep coming back again and again to lower their handicap. Of course, most courses were designed with both the professional and beginner in mind, so even a first-time golfer can enjoy a day out on the links at the nearby courses in Delaware and Maryland. In order to be ready to tackle that Par 3 or fish your ball out of a fresh water wetland, you need to have the proper attire and equipment. Make sure your outfit is appropriate for the course by stopping in a pro shop to find all your favorite brands of golf clothing. If you left your clubs at home, many courses offer club rentals, or you can pick up some new ones at a pro shop if you’re in the market. With help from the friendly staff and the great selections of golfing equipment, rest assured that you’ll be the most perfected golfer on the course—and the best dressed as well. Most golf courses offer lessons for every level of golfer. Whether you need to tweak your swing or get a full introduction to this game of precision, onsite pros are there to help. Learn the basics from one of the expert instructors, or work on advanced techniques with a pro. In addition to teaching the fundamentals, lessons can offer swing analyses, general pointers for evaluating the course and tips for your short game. Some golf courses also have the additional benefit of an onsite driving range. Or if you want to enjoy a day on the green with your kids, there are courses that allow them to learn the keys to playing a good game. Some even offer parent/child programs for the mini golfer who’s interested in more than just putt-putt. One such course is Deer Run Golf Club, recognized in Golf Digest’s Best Places to Play. Deer Run offers lessons and golf clinics on site at their Bob Beckelman Golf Academy, considered the finest golf teaching facility in the area. There are private and group lessons available for everyone, from parent and child seminars to senior lessons. Deer Run provides the option to play Loop Golf, with your choice of three to nine holes, ranging from a 45-minute game to a 2-hour game, perfect for someone who doesn’t have the four hours to spare on 18 holes. For those who do want the full course, Deer Run is a par 73 championship course, guaranteeing a championship golfing experience at a speedy play pace. If you don’t want to travel too many miles away from the beach to get your swing in, head to nearby Cripple Creek Golf & Country Club. Only five miles from Bethany Beach, this 142-acre course is a great option for the visitors that love the salty air from the ocean. And this location doesn’t just specialize in 18-hole golf courses, but it also offers swimming, tennis and dining, all in one place. Top quality service and club houses are standard, so if you can’t get your game up to par—or under par, we should say—stop in at the clubhouse for a tasty beer and meal. Some of the area’s finest clubhouses feature deliciously fresh food and cold drinks in a casual setting. Take in the lakeside views, meet your golfing buddies and make some new friends as you reminisce about golfing excursions and share techniques. Many courses offer deals on day-long play packages and giveaways. River Run Golf Club offers a chance for players to win a free round of golf, and they

From chef-owned eateries to outdoor cafes, dining in southern Delaware is truly a culinary adventure. Dine alfresco next to crashing waves, or kick back outdoor and enjoy a tropical happy hour cocktail as the sun melts away. There are dozens of restaurants on the beach areas and beyond that provide all the elements of an unforgettable dining experience. From Rehoboth Beach to Fenwick Island, you’ll find a wide variety of restaurants, from chef-owned and operated bistros inventing uniquely appetizing menus to family-owned eateries preparing locally-sourced favorites. What most local restaurants have in common is a focus on local flavors, such as the famous fresh seafood available. Sometimes chefs will use the sweet, succulent chunks of meat from blue crabs to form perfectly shaped crab cakes, often prepared with little filler and topped with spicy remoulade or sweet tartar sauce. Other seafood favorites found along the Delaware Beaches are deliciously moist rockfish, tasty tautog and flaky and delicate flounder available at different times throughout the year. If you familiarize yourself with the types of seafood available in the region during specific parts of the year, you’ll benefit by getting CONTINUED ON PG 30

the freshest, tastiest seafood, and you’ll be benefiting the local harvesters in the area who care about the waterways, thus preserving a tradition and way of life. Of course there are plenty of options besides seafood at the many restaurants here. Meats are always in season, but there’s a lot more to it than your average beach burgers. This category is where chefs perform some of their wildest experimentations, and the results are always extraordinary. Menus boast offerings such as slow roasted pork belly with braised fennel, bacon-wrapped

quail stuffed with goat cheese, roasted prime rib and grass-fed burgers topped with foie gras. If you’re in the mood for a juicy steak, you’ll find many eateries that pride themselves on not just featuring this as an item on their menu. Rather, they make this the item on their menu, taking great care in preparing a tender and flavorful steak cooked just to your liking. If it’s international fare you’re craving, there are plenty of authentic favorites to suit your taste. Embark on a culinary journey through the countries of Italy, China, Japan, France, Mexico, Greece, Thailand and more as you sample traditionally prepared dishes made right here in Delaware. Fresh veggies from the many farms on the Delmarva Peninsula are paired with fresh catches, enticing meats and other delectable entrees for a locally sourced meal you’re sure to love. Fresh veggies from the many farms on the Delmarva Peninsula are paired with the fresh catches for a locally sourced meal you’re sure to love. Delaware has two-and-a-half counties on the Peninsula—Kent and Sussex—making up nearly 80% of the state’s land, and fresh veggies can be found here year-round. Springtime brings favorites such as asparagus, parsnips and different types of leafy, green lettuces. The abundance of summer’s bounty provides juicy tomatoes, red raspberries, sweet peaches and various varieties of squash. Restaurant menus are still filled with local options during the fall and winter with items including pumpkins, winter squash, turnips, leeks, Brussels sprouts and beets. Look for these items prepared any number of creative ways at some of the fabulous restaurants along the Delaware Beaches. Rehoboth Beach has been attracting loads of media attention, as area restaurants have expanded beyond the typical beach resort establishments to creative and gourmet eateries. You’ll still find the classic mom-and-pop diners, with favorites in beach food, seafood dishes and a unique atmosphere.

The farm-to-table— or in some cases— the tide-to-table movement is taking over the mindset of many area chefs

Added to the mix are cosmopolitan eateries with fusion cuisine, international restaurants and chef-owned eateries with changing menus using the best of local flavors. The farm-to-table—or in some cases—the tide-to-table movement is taking over the mindset of many area chefs as the need for building community, not to mention, obtaining great tasting food, becomes an obvious factor in owning a restaurant. After dinner, the town continues to sizzle with nightly concerts by the beach and popular downtown hotspots. Many also head to nearby Dewey Beach for a night out on the town. Dewey, a more casual and smaller version of Rehoboth, features many popular restaurants and bars that attract crowds into the wee hours. Listed below are some of the favorite dining spots in Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island, Dewey Beach, Lewes and beyond, so try one—try all! We guarantee you’ll be back for seconds. Serving up fresh seafood and steaks, the Bayside Skillet is quickly becoming a must-visit restaurant for visitors across the region! Visit www.baysideskillet.com for a look at the full menu! Cool off with a sweet treat from Cold Stone Creamery, offering the ultimate ice cream experience! Cold Stone uses the highest quality ingredients and prepares custom creations on a frozen granite stone. Choose from their truly divine flavor combinations such as Birthday Cake Remix™ or Banana Caramel Crunch™, or you may choose to create your own unique mix using a combination of ice cream flavors and mix-ins of candy, nuts, fruit, cakes, cookies and toppings. From unique ice cream creations to smoothies, cakes and shakes, nobody serves up the ultimate indulgence like Cold Stone. Later in the day, make your way over to The Cottage Café Restaurant & Pub where you’ll find extraordinary service and exceptional, reasonably-priced food. The Cottage Café specializes in succulent seafood dishes such as fresh soft shell crabs, the best local fried oysters around, prize-winning crab cakes, tender scallops, fresh flounder, rich cream of crab soup and much more. Enjoy nightly specials as well as live music in a friendly atmosphere. On Saturdays and Sundays, guests can enjoy a delicious a la carte brunch from 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
