ore than glistening sandy shores, Delaware Beaches offers a fun-filled vacation for all. Whether you’re cruising among the cosmopolitan shops of Rehoboth Beach, vibing with the laid-back atmosphere of the Bethany Beach boardwalk, or hiking the state park, you’re in for an unforgettable vacation in paradise. Of course, one of the most popular activities here is shopping, which has the distinction of being sales tax-free. Meander down the sidewalks of our quaint towns, stopping to browse for antiques, designer clothes, unique gifts, one-of-akind art and much, much more. Or head to our famous outlet malls, where good deals come standard. From the southeastern-most tip of Fenwick Island to the point of Cape Henlopen State Park, the main attraction is the ocean. But as you venture inland, you will find museums, cultural events and festivals throughout the year plus exciting outdoor adventures. Explore inland bays on a kayak, sailboat or stand-up paddleboard. An artistic and eclectic community, this region is rich in cultural and arts organizations. Art galleries, symphony orchestras and theaters come together to make the Delaware Beaches more than your average coastal community. There is a wealth of exciting attractions, entertainment and nightlife, all with the beautiful sandy beaches as a backdrop. All this, complemented by an eclectic restaurant scene full of intimate eateries and gourmet restaurants, and you have one of the Mid-Atlantic’s favorite year-round destinations. We invite you to take in all this region has to offer, from the sun-soaked beaches to the bustling sidewalks. On the next few pages, you’ll find all the best places to eat, play, stay and shop in the Delaware Beaches.

hether your vacation is centered on fun adventures for the family or waterrelated itineraries, or you just need some tips for spending time indoors when the weather’s gone awry, you’ll certainly find these all and more in the picturesque state of Delaware. Just as unique and varied are the members of your family, the same is true for a vacation in Delaware. If it’s a breezy morning walk on the beach or in the many galleries, boutiques or bookstores, this East Coast state hosts a wealth of experiences that aren’t tailored to a single type of person or family. Because the region is so varied, it’s easy to customize your vacation with activities and excursions that fit your idea of fun. You can rest assured there’s much to see and do to fit your one-of-akind personality.
F a m i ly F u n The kids’ bags are packed, and you’re all ready for a much-needed vacation. Once your troop arrives in Delaware, drop your bags off at your cottage or hotel, and tote everyone down to the waterpark in Rehoboth Beach or Fenwick Island. The family will surely enjoy a day of slipping and sliding in the water, and you’ll relish in an afternoon by the pool. When the sun’s out, it’s the perfect day for the beach. Splash in the waves with your family, play some volleyball or picnic. But the best of all is that it’s free! Afterward, take a step back in time for an old-time photo portrait as you dress up in a range of distinctive costumes from your favorite era or take a family portrait on the beach by a professional photographer for some unforgettable memories. Slip aboard a pirate ship for a swashbuckling good time! Dress in pirate attire, and use your map to discover where sunken treasure might be lying. Don’t forget to practice your “Argh” beforehand! Your kids’ music preferences may not be your favorite, and they may think your taste is old-fashioned. Luckily, Delaware’s variety of concerts and festivals are held all year, so you’re sure to find a musical group that both you and the kids can vibe with. Check out who will be performing during your stay and look to our calendar of 10 |

R A I N Y D AY S While any day is a good day to explore the many restaurants offered here, a rainy day is an even better opportunity to keep dry and delight your taste buds. You’ve probably been craving some freshly caught seafood since you’ve caught a whiff of the salty air. Delaware’s restaurants offer huge selections of seafood as well as other popular items like sushi, fresh fish and shrimp delicacies guaranteed to delight! Swing by an upscale oceanfront restaurant or enjoy a scrumptious breakfast at a boardwalk restaurant where you can watch surfers showing off on the waves. When you want to go for a more casual atmosphere, there’s something about pizza that brings everyone together. Crowd around a savory pie and watch a movie together, play a board game or just take time to spend some long overdue time together. After everyone has refueled, wander inside the eclectic souvenir stores and clothing boutiques complete with unique jewelry, whimsical toys and gifts. You can shop for unique treasures at a country 12 |
store or grab some nostalgic treats like candy or ice cream on the boardwalk. There is also a great shopping area in the Fenwick, Bethany, Rehoboth or Lewes seaside main streets where you will certainly find what you’re looking for. Strolling through the many one-of-a-kind boutiques is the perfect time to find that treasure for the ones back home that couldn’t join you on this outstanding adventure. Brush up on your gaming skills by taking everyone to an arcade or a round of indoor puttput. Battle with your teens (in a good way) with these classic favorites, or try something new together. The loser owes the winner an ice cream cone! No matter who you are or where you’re visiting from, summer is the season for indoor putt-putt! This no-sweat sport is located in nearby Ocean City great for all ages, giving everyone a competitive edge with fun obstacles and themes. Feed your appetite for knowledge with something new this vacation by exploring a nearby museum. Check out event schedules to see what programs and exhibits are showing, and spend some time enjoying the calm indoors. If you leave feeling inspired, visit one of the many nearby galleries and buy a new piece that will certainly jazz up your

home. Or you can opt to spend some time creating your own by painting your own pottery! For more rainy day fun, take the kids to Kids Cottage, then to Dewey to check out the newest local bands. But, perhaps the most priceless way to spend a rainy day is to grab an umbrella, jump in the nearest puddle, and embrace your childlike side, even if for just a moment. Even though the sun is taking a break, it’s the perfect time to catch up with that new book that you found at a Bethany Beach bookshop. All are a great experience to add an extra dose of adventure to your vacation. Discover these popular water sports while you’re here and learn how to surf the sky! Take a ride down the nature paths of Delaware. Peaceful and equally pleasurable, make sure you take advantage of the many miles of bay front coastline aboard a kayak. the simple pleasures of Delaware’s open sea. Perhaps you’d rather ride solo. Explore the ocean on a personal watercraft. Your heart will surely be racing once you’re zooming on the ocean at quick speeds and leaping over gigantic waves. More serene, yet with extra strength required, take to a new form of transportation by learning the popular pastime of stand-up paddleboarding. All you need is a board and paddle, and you’re set to go.
Next to connecting with Delaware’s nature, this sport can also be quite a strenuous workout while you’re improving your strength and balance. While you’re paddling, you’ll enjoy incredible views of the horizon and possibly even catch some glimpses of dolphins. Once you master the sport that is stand-up paddleboarding, you’ll be able to take the skills with you anywhere you go!
Good times have never been easier to reel in!

DBVG: Is there a story behind your restaurants’ names?
ed
MEET A LOCAL Get to Know George Washington Descendant Brent Poffenberger of The Cottage Café and Bethany Boathouse Delaware Beaches Visitors Guide: How did you enter the restaurant business? Has it always been your passion? Brent Poffenberger: I have always loved cooking and hospitality in general. We used to vacation in Bethany Beach when I was young… Eventually my parent’s bought a condo in Ocean City, Md. in 1976, and we started to spend a lot of time in Ocean City (weekends, summer vacations, etc.). I love the beach and always knew it was my dream to live at the beach. My [business] partner Tom Neville … and I met at Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, WV. While in college, we talked about the idea of one day opening a restaurant together. I graduated first [in] 1990, and I started working for chain restaurants in the DC [District of Columbia] area to learn as much as I could from chains: consistency of service, food and atmosphere. Always knowing I wanted to open my own restaurant at the beach, I was always looking for a building and opportunity. We opened The Cottage Café in Ocean City in June of 1993 and The Bethany Beach Cottage Café in May 1994.
BP: We are a family restaurant, and our motto has always been food prepared with care and served with pride. We felt like our name would remind people of the times they used to come with family and have family reunions and rent a beach cottage for a week. The name evokes summer vacations and family and homestyle cooking. DBVG: What do you feel is the key to having a successful restaurant at the beach? BP: Consistency of service and food and atmosphere. DBVG: What side of your family is George Washington on? BP: I am related to George Washington on my mother’s side of the family. We are related to George Washington through his mother. I am a second cousin of George Washington, 8 times removed.
DBVG: What do you think is most important about your family’s legacy? BP: Service—when I think of the current political situation in this country, and I see career politicians who seem only to really care about themselves and getting elected again, it makes me think a lot [about] what George Washington would think. He knew it was his responsibility to serve his country and then move on and let someone else do it. DBVG: What’s the most surprising/interesting fact about George Washington that you think a lot of people may not know? BP: He didn’t want to be a politician; he felt like it was his responsibility. The Ocean City location of The Cottage Café was closed in 2003 after 10 years, while the Bethany Beach location remains open. Recently, Poffenberger and Neville opened another family restaurant, Bethany Boathouse located across the street from the café.

ith bustling Ocean City on one side and the serene Delaware Seashore State Park on the other, the towns of Fenwick Island and Bethany Beach are sandwiched between two extremes. Roller coasters and arcades buzz to the south, while birds and the occasional dolphin set the scene up north. These two beach communities seem to have adjusted to their opposing neighbors quite well, combining the excitement and amenities of the boardwalk with the beauty and serenity of nature. Today, the area is known as an ideal retreat for families and the perfect environment for a laid-back beach getaway. Fenwick Island lies right on the Delaware-Maryland state line, just north of Ocean City. Quiet and serene, Fenwick offers some of the cleanest beaches in the region. One of the most popular attractions in Fenwick is the Fenwick Island Lighthouse, an 89-foot-tall lighthouse built in 1858. The towering white beacon is open for tours, although

n old-fashioned beach destination with modern flair, Rehoboth Beach is one of the mid-Atlantic’s most popular beach towns. Though garnering the nickname, “The Nation’s Summer Capital,” Rehoboth is truly a year-round destination with quality entertainment, cosmopolitan dining, one-of-a-kind shopping and recreation for all ages. Spend a day at Rehoboth’s waterpark or at the ocean for an afternoon of swimming, surfing or just leisurely floating in the waves. Of course, relaxing in the rays is one of the main reasons people come to Rehoboth. The beaches are clean and spacious enough for folks to spread out and enjoy a little time in the sun. At night, the town continues to sizzle with nightly concerts at the oceanfront, popular downtown cosmopolitan hotspots and bars to mingle with friends. Many also head to nearby Dewey Beach for a night out on the town. Dewey, a more casual and smaller version of Rehoboth, features many popular bars and clubs

Nearly a mile long, the Rehoboth boardwalk area includes arcades, delicious restaurants, outlet shopping and many spots for when you’re looking to grab an afternoon snack. tep onto the streets of Historic Lewes, and it won’t take long for you to sense the town’s maritime heritage and that its roots run deep into history. Nearly 400 years old, Lewes continues to preserve its seafaring charm to honors its heritage as the first town in the first state. As with many colonial seaports, Lewes was also at the mercy of pirates for much of its history. During the late 1600s, pirates relentlessly raided the town, which caused a law to be passed requiring Lewes’ citizens to own a musket and ammunition for protection against the raiders. While today’s citizens will not be bearing muskets, Lewes’ enchanting history is waiting to be discovered around every corner. Alive with people year-round, visitors often enjoy the gorgeous architecture, beautifully preserved homes, museums, scenic streets and downtown area, which is ideal for pedestrians. While most of these preserved homes date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, one from the 17th century is the oldest standing building in the state. You’ll find the alluring historic district filled to the brim with more than 40 unique shops, fine restaurants, inns, B&Bs and more. Nearby, bay and ocean beaches offer limitless recreational activities amidst beautiful unspoiled nature. Anglers will enjoy an afternoon casting at the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, and the bay or ocean areas allow for plenty of swimming. There are thousands of acres of preserved lands in Cape Henlopen State Park, and it provides lifeguard patrols between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day so both you and your children can enjoy the beach safely. One of the most popular ways to enjoy the Delaware Bay is aboard the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. Enjoy an 28 |
80-minute cruise as a passenger, or travel with your car. You can even explore another great coastal town at the other end of the journey—Cape May, New Jersey. Whether you spend the day learning about Lewes’ history, enjoying the beach and beautiful maritime nature, finding unique treasures to bring home or all three, you’re bound to come to one realization—one day in Lewes simply isn’t enough. fter 1682, William Penn was granted Delaware land. He declared Cape Henlopen State Park and its resources for public use to the citizens of Lewes and Sussex County. The 5193-acre state park located in Lewes became one of the nation’s first public spaces. Cape Henlopen State Park includes a swimming beach with a beach that stretches for 6 miles and has lifeguards on watch from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. This beach is complete with umbrella rentals, a bathhouse with showers, changing rooms and a food concession. As for visitors with wheelchairs and power chairs, there are 30-foot mats connected from the boardwalk to provide easy access onto the beach. In addition to the beach, the Cape Henlopen State Park also offers open spaces for various activities. Picnic pavilions can be reserved for group events, and basketball courts and an 18-hole disc golf course promotes both exercise and friendly competition. Surf fishing is also available, but only in designated areas. Vehicles that have surf-fishing permits are instructed to park in a single file; this helps accommodate any safety concerns for visitors and staff alike. Another activity that folks can partake in is hunting. All of the Delaware State Parks require that each prospective hunter must register for the Delaware State Parks Hunting Program and have a valid Delaware Hunting License. The registration is $10. All must be aware that the park’s hunting areas are shared with other permitted activities such as hiking and biking; extreme caution should be exercised during hunting. There are various horseback riding, hiking and biking trails that span anywhere from 0.6–5 miles long. At the beach, there is a 94.6-mile trail that is used for hiking and equestrian activities. Seasonal horseback riding is allowed on the beach, but all riding guidelines should still be followed. Another trail available at Cape Henlopen State Park is the Pinelands Trail, which is 2 miles long and is exclusively

for hiking. On the Pinelands Trail, one can find World War II artillery bunkers and discover four species of pine. A second trail that’s exclusive to hikers is the 0.6-mile Seaside Nature Trail. Here, the bayside location holds many of the state park’s nature programs. The Walking Dunes Trail stretches for 1.6 miles and is reserved for hiking and biking. The Salt Marsh Spur is a 0.6-mile-long hiking and biking trail. This is a loose-sand trail that provides views of plant and wildlife. The Gordons Pond Trail is a 2.65-mile hiking and biking trail that splits between a crushed stone surface and an elevated boardwalk while providing scenic views. The Bike Loop Trail is a 3-mile-long shared-use trail. It is a paved trail suitable for most uses and links many of the state park’s main attractions. Lastly, the Junction and Breakwater Trail is also a 5-mile, one-way, shared-use trail that takes you through open fields and conifer forests. Along with its trails, Cape Henlopen State Park provides over 150 camping sites that accommodate RVs or tents; most sites have water hook-ups. In addition to these sites, there are six cabins available for rent to campers year-round. These cabins feature two bunk beds and one queen-sized bed and can house up to six people. There is also an AC/heating unit, cleaning supplies, a fire ring and a grill for campers.
Along with the year-round camping at Cape Henlopen State Park, there are also summer camps for children of all ages. Making Tracks encourages 5 to 6-year-olds’ detective skills around and in the trails as they learn more about animals within the park. Fishing for the Future is a camp that teaches responsible hands-on fishing skills to 8 to 10-year-olds. Cape Challenge challenges 10 to 12-year-olds to engage in teamwork and hustle through challenges of living on the park’s wild side. Fun in the Sun is a program for 5 to 6-year-olds that gives them the opportunity to make sundials, feed plants and other sun-related activities. These camps and programs are just a few of many that are available at the park during the summertime. In addition to the many activities to choose from in Cape Henlopen State Park, the park hosts annual events, such as the Kite Festival and the Halloween Fantasy trail. For the history buffs, the World War II Observation Tower offers 360-degree views of the coastline. One thing’s for certain—outdoor activities are endless at Cape Henlopen State Park, and there’s always a new trail to discover. Cape Henlopen State Park is located at 15099 Cape Henlopen Dr. in Lewes. For more information call 302-645-8983 or visit DeStateParks.com. —Robert Enriquez 2016/2017 | Delaware Beaches | 29

MARKETS For more than 45 years, the Seaside Country store has been a Fenwick Island landmark for Delmarva locals and visitors. The history, tradition and charm has earned the Seaside Country store its reputation as “the most unusual store on the shore.” With one step inside Seaside Country store, the delicious aroma of homemade fudge wafts through the air. Combined with the friendly staff and the variety of items, it’s no longer a simple shopping trip; instead, it’s an experience. From sensuous lotions and body washes and unique home décor items to women’s clothing and collectibles, the store offers shoppers an old-town feel with a modern and unique flair. And how could the experience be anything but exciting and fun? Since the store is open from March to November, the staff completely restocks before the start of the new season. By doing so, the Vickers and their staff provide customers with a new, fresh and unique inventory. No matter what you are looking for, you will find it at Seaside. For a beach bonfire or fine dining at home check out G&E/Hocker’s, a unique and family-owned supermarket for over 50 years where customers can enjoy fresh, top-choice steaks, which are handcut to your liking, in-house seasoned and smoked high-quality pulled pork, all-beef hotdogs, sausage, ribs, turkey and more—all served from an authentic butcher shop.
OUTLETS An incredibly popular place to shop is at the outlet malls on Delaware’s Route 1. Who doesn’t love finding delicious deals on high-end products? In fact, the Rehoboth outlets have become so popular that The Washington Post has published shopping tips and travel articles on the outlet malls alone! Browse through well-known shops as well as stores only found in Delaware as you discover apparel for all ages, accessories, entertainment stores, dining and more all in one area. You will find yourself walking out of one store and quickly spotting your next stop to continue shopping for jaw-dropping deals and sales tax-free items. With all the trendiest brands the outlets have to offer, you will have no choice but to treat yourself—and your wallet!
R E N TA L S The rental shops throughout Delaware Beaches provide everything you will need to have a perfect beach vacation. Biking is a popular beach hobby, and there are enough bike shops for you to find that stylish beach cruiser you’ve been dreaming of. You will find water sport rental shops offering stand-up paddleboards, pontoon and jet boats, jet skis and more. There are also places to rent beach items, such as lounge chairs and towels, so if you’ve left something at home, there’s no need to worry—we’ve got you covered like a beach umbrella.

ummon your inner Jack Nicklaus, and tee off at one of the many first-rate courses that surround the Delaware Beaches. There are more than a dozen public courses in the area, each with a distinctive layout and atmosphere. From coastal marshes to farmland and forests, the Delmarva Peninsula’s varying terrain creates a wonderful canvas for any golf architect. Famous course designers have contributed their talents to molding this seaside landscape into stunning fairways and greens, creating championship courses and many memorable holes. Nature defines Southern Delaware and Maryland golf. There are many fairways framed by towering pines, coastal wetlands, lakes, rivers and streams. Don’t be surprised if you are joined by herons, deer and other wildlife, even just a few miles away from the bustling beaches. The natural beauty of this area shines through at all area courses, providing a serene environment for total relaxation. The unique terrain found at most area courses is not only visually stimulating but also provides rare challenges that test a golfer’s ability. There are some ambitious holes on area courses—challenging enough that golfers keep coming back again and again to lower their handicap. Of course, most courses were designed with both the professional and beginner in mind, so even a first-time golfer can enjoy a day out on the links at the nearby courses in Delaware and Maryland. In order to be ready to tackle that Par 3 or fish your ball out of a freshwater wetland, you need to have the proper attire and equipment. Make sure your outfit is appropriate for the course by stopping in a pro shop to find all your favorite brands of golf clothing. If you left your clubs at home, many courses offer club rentals, or you can pick up some new ones at a pro shop if you’re in the market. With help from the friendly staff and the great selections of golfing equipment, rest assured that you’ll be the most perfected golfer on the course— and the best dressed as well. Most golf courses offer lessons for every level of golfer. Whether you need to tweak your swing or get a full introduction to this game of precision, on-site pros are there to help. Learn the basics from one of the expert instructors, or work on advanced techniques with a pro. In addition to teaching the fundamentals, lessons can offer swing analyses, general pointers for evaluating the course and tips for your short game. Some golf courses also have the additional benefit of an on-site driving range. Or if you want to enjoy a day on the green with your kids, there are courses that allow them to learn the keys to playing a good game. Some even offer parent/child programs for the mini golfer who’s interested in more than just putt-putt. Top-quality service and clubhouses are standard, so if you can’t get your game up to par—or under par, we should say—stop in at the clubhouse for a tasty beer and meal. Some of the area’s finest club-

houses feature deliciously fresh food and cold drinks in a casual setting. Take in the lakeside views, meet your golfing buddies and make some new friends as you reminisce about golfing excursions and share techniques. Some clubs even offer swimming, tennis and dining, all in one place. Many courses offer deals on day-long play packages and giveaways as well as “stay and play” packages that are perfect for those who want to play golf by day and relax on the greens by night. Why go anywhere else when you can have it all in one location? You can relax knowing that when you return after a long day on the green, you’ll find top-notch facilities and a friendly staff ready to help you unwind. There are a great variety of hotel selections in the area for a mix of economy or luxury accommodations. No matter which place you choose to stay, you’ll get a good night’s sleep and be energized for a brand new game in the morning. Many hotels even offer complete golfing packages that allow you the privilege of trying out several different ranges of courses at various locations rather than playing the same course over and over. If that wasn’t great enough, many of the packages may include free club cleaning and storage, breakfast, lunch and beverage vouchers, complimentary golf towels, tees, ball markers and guaranteed preferred advanced tee times. Since the Delaware Beaches community is dedicated to golfing and the courses vary to suit everyone from beginner to professional, there is an experience waiting for every golfer. So try one, try all—with beautiful weather and spectacular scenery, Southern Delaware and Maryland’s golf is an experience all visitors will enjoy and continue to come back for year after year.

A TASTE OF DELAWARE BEACHES From upscale eateries to dockside cafes, dining in southern Delaware is truly a culinary adventure. The art of food has been and continues to be an important tradition here, and it’s apparent that area chefs take pride in their delicious creations using straight-from-the-farm fruits and vegetables and freshly caught seafood right from Delaware’s shores. From Rehoboth Beach to Fenwick Island, you’ll find a wide variety of restaurants, including chef-owned and -operated bistros inventing uniquely appetizing menus to family-owned eateries preparing locally sourced favorites.
Harvested Bites Fresh veggies from the many farms on the Delmarva Peninsula are paired with fresh catches, enticing meats and other delectable entrees to make a locally sourced meal you’re sure to love. Delaware has two and a half counties on the Peninsula—Kent and Sussex—making up nearly 80 percent of the state’s land, and fresh veggies can be found here year-round. Springtime brings favorites such as asparagus, parsnips and different types of leafy,

green lettuces. The abundance of summer’s bounty provides juicy tomatoes, red raspberries, sweet peaches and varieties of squash. Restaurant menus are still filled with local ingredients during the fall and winter including pumpkins, winter squash, turnips, leeks, Brussels sprouts and beets. Look for these items prepared any number of creative ways at some of the fabulous restaurants along the Delaware Beaches. Other seafood favorites found along the Delaware Beaches are the deliciously moist rockfish, tasty tautog and flaky and delicate flounder available at different times throughout the year. If you familiarize yourself with the types of seafood available in the region during certain times of the year, you’ll benefit by getting the freshest, tastiest seafood. You’ll also be giving back to the local harvesters in the area, which preserve this long-time fishing tradition.
Co s m o p o l i ta n Of course there are plenty of options besides seafood at the many restaurants here. Meats are always in season, but there’s a lot more to it
than your average beach burgers. Here in Delaware, chefs perform some of their wildest experimentations, and the results are always extraordinary. Menus boast offerings such as slowroasted pork belly with braised fennel, bacon-wrapped quail stuffed with goat cheese, roasted prime rib and grassfed burgers topped with foie gras. If you’re in the mood for a succulent steak, you’ll notice that many eateries here take pride in this one menu item. Chefs often highlight their juicy steaks and take great care in preparing a tender and flavorful steak cooked just to your liking. Many local restaurants focus on local flavors, such as the famous Chesapeake blue crabs available April through December. You’ll see these popular seafood staples prepared different ways from battered and fried to steamed and served with a piping hot bowl of melted butter. Sometimes chefs will use these sweet, succulent chunks of blue crab meat to form perfectly shaped crab cakes, often prepared with little filler and topped with spicy remoulade or sweet tartar sauce. The Delaware Beaches have been attracting loads of media attention, as area restaurants have expanded beyond the typical beach resort establishments
to creative and gourmet eateries. You’ll still find the classic mom-and-pop diners, with beach food favorites, seafood dishes and a unique atmosphere. Added to the mix are cosmopolitan eateries with fusion cuisine, international restaurants and chef-owned eateries with changing menus using the best of local flavors. The farm-to-table— or in some cases—the tide-to-table movement is taking over the mindset of many area chefs as the need for building community, not to mention, obtaining great tasting food, becomes an obvious factor in owning a restaurant.
Outdoor Start your morning off on the patio of a locally-owned breakfast and coffee shop and end it with a delicious meal and cold beverage at one of the several waterfront restaurants in the area. Delaware Beaches are a host to casual dining, family-friendly eateries—all with plenty of outdoor seating. What makes the fresh and local co n t i n u e d o n pag e 38

food in Delaware Beaches all the more enjoyable is where you enjoy your meal. There are dozens of outdoor places to dine throughout the area, whether you are vacationing in Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island, Dewey Beach or Lewes. After dinner, the town continues to sizzle with nightly concerts by the beach and popular downtown hotspots. Many also head to nearby Dewey Beach for a night out on the town. Dewey, a more casual and smaller version of Rehoboth, features many popular restaurants and bars that attract crowds into the wee hours.

Fa m i ly F r i e n d ly Of course, you will find a plethora of seafood restaurants that are both traditional and in a buffet-style where you can indulge in your favorite seafood dish with a unique Delaware Beaches twist, of course. There are a variety of non-seafood restaurants in the area as well. From delis and pizzerias to authentic Mexican and barbeque, you won’t have trouble finding a place to eat that the whole family will agree upon. If you’d rather eat at home or are having dinner on the beach one night, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes offering carry out so you can avoid the wait and pick up your meals to go. Or head over to
Bethany Beach to visit the local butcher’s shop where you can order hand-cut steaks and other high-quality meats for a fun cookout with family and friends. No matter what you choose to take on the go, you are sure to love the variety of delicious dining options while in Delaware Beaches. Finish off your meal with a tasty dessert at one of the local bakeries, ice cream or frozen yogurt shops where you will find plenty of treats made with fresh and local products to satisfy your sweet tooth. Whether you’re craving fresh-from-theshores seafood, a piping hot pizza or a little sweet treat, you’re sure to find all this and more inside the superior restaurants in Delaware Beaches. So indulge a little—and enjoy a meal that you’ll remember forever.

Pleasing craft beer connoisseurs’ palates since 1995, Dogfish Head Brewery is located in Milton and Rehoboth Beach. What began as a humble brewery has now expanded into the 100,000-squarefoot facility it is today producing creative craft beers that are available for purchase in more than 25 states. With the brewing facility in Milton and the brewpub in Rehoboth, Dogfish eventually expanded their craft into distilling spirits. Depending on the brew, they’re offered year-round, seasonally and only on draft—there are some that are only released once here in Delaware. In that case, you may want to make sure you snatch them up when available so you can age them on your own. A few of these rarities, as they call them, are Birra Etrusca Bronze, an ale brewed with pomegranates, wildflower honey and whole-flower hops, and 75 Minute IPA, which blends two of their favorites—60 Minute IPA and 90 Minute

IPA—with maple syrup before it’s carbonated. Year-round brews are their Indian Brown Ale, 60 and 90 Minute IPA, Namaste and Midas Touch, among other delicious brews. Another distinguished local brewery is Crooked Hammock Brewery located in Lewes. One day, owner Rich Garrahan decided to move to the beach and leave his white-collar job behind. Now, you can step into a slice of his aftermath—the crooked hammock kind of life that embraces the unique beach lifestyle. Year-round brews include The Hammock Saison, a quintessential summer sipper that’s a sure choice when you’re looking to embrace the hammock mantra. You’ll also find their Backyard Brown and Mootzy’s Treasure IPA no matter what time of year your visiting. For the seasonal visitors, try The Wilbon, a Belgian-style Tripel that was actually the first to be produced in their brewery. Of course, what’s a tasty brew without live music to accompany? All summer, sit back, sip slowly and discover your own version of this crooked hammock way of life. There’s much more sipping to do at Delaware’s first and only winery, Nassau Valley Vineyards. Peg and her father, Bob Raley, established the vineyard on a family-owned farm site outside of Lewes, but it didn’t happen overnight. At the time, the state’s laws did not allow farm wineries. Peg then drafted laws and convinced the Delaware General Assembly to create legislation for farm wineries. After it passed in 1991, Nassau Valley Vineyards opened its doors in 1993. The fine vino of Nassau is as local as they come. Producing 14 wines crafted from Eastern Shore grapes and fruits as well as from other regionally grown fruit, taste the varied wines from the barrel-aged cabernet sauvignon to a French-style rose—a perfect pairing for seafood. For dessert wine lovers, try their 2012 Peach Ambrosia that’s crafted from 100 percent fermented peach juice. Get to know the art behind the craft in a self-guided tour or guided group tour of the winery, then discover your new favorite wine in the tasting room; you may even get to sample one of their small-batch wines, which are only made available in the tasting room. From Rehoboth to Lewes and craft beer to handcrafted wine, the local libations offered here are truly gems waiting to be discovered. So, take a tour, grab a glass and experience the homegrown sips of Delaware. —AL
T
he sun has set, the night is young, and you’re looking for the best place to catch a live show. The beaches of Delaware are a hub for hearing great live music, and we’ve got the venues to show for our reputation. Harpoon Hanna’s on Fenwick Island boasts beautiful views of the water and sets the scene for bands to echo throughout the starry night sky. Beginning on Memorial Day, hear the acoustic melodies of Johnny Wilson at the Tiki Bar every Monday, all summer long. Throughout the week, hear a variety of fantastic local artists, and on the weekends there’s often a DJ from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Bethany Boathouse is another local’s favorite to hear live music in a casual, always fun atmosphere on the deck. Whether it’s an acoustic duo playing tunes that are perfect for the summer evening breezes or a cover band singing familiar favorites for you to sing along, the performances always rock the Boat! The Freeman Stage at Bayside in Fenwick hosts a grand variety of performances from dance to live music, theater and entertainment for the kids. This summer, the venue will host national names like The Band Perry, Pat Benatar and The Beach Boys as well as the popular “Locals Under the Lights” series featuring our area’s own performing artists. Of course, there are a wealth of music festivals that take place each year. A mecca for music lovers, Dewey Beach Music Conference provides live, intimate performances at venues that are all within walking distance. For four nights from Sept. 22 to 25, participate in demo and mentoring sessions, music industry meet and greets and of course enjoy the music. At the annual Rehoboth Jazz Festival, the smooth, silky jazz tunes flow for four days, Oct. 13–16. This year, hear jam sessions, family concerts, a Nat King Cole Tribute and Patti Austin. As the 2016 Artist of the Year with nearly 20 solo albums, Austin has performed at the Grammys and Oscars. At Delaware, there’s a myriad of venues to hear music live and local—you’ve just got to wait for the sun to go down. —AL
