Courtship In The Country

40 Ways To C reate A Romantic And Rustic Celebration | By Angela Blue

In lieu of extravagant, over-the-top affairs, couples today are opting for the simplistic romance of a rustic chic wedding. There are various ways to incorporate this trend into your special day, and many brides and grooms find that having a natural celebration allows them to make the wedding more personalized and focused on them as a couple. With the right adornments, special details, and a bit of bark and burlap, you can turn your blissful bash into a rural retreat.

LOCATION The first choice is obvious: a farm that has rolling pastures dotted with buttercups, horses galloping about and a big, red barn. There are plenty of horse farms in Hampton Roads—many in the Pungo area of Virginia Beach. Some but not all are available for wedding rentals, so do some research to find the one that best suits your needs. A backyard. If you’re planning an intimate gathering with a limited guest list, perhaps you have a relative or friend who’s willing to open their land to you. Just remember to consider important details such as restrooms (most plumbing systems aren’t equipped for crowds) and parking. A winery. Having your wedding at a nearby winery such as Chatham Vineyards on the Eastern Shore or Williamsburg Winery is a popular idea for many brides because of the gorgeous atmosphere (not to mention the neverending supply of wine that is often available to brides and grooms at wholesale prices). Gardens. Whether you choose the Norfolk Botanical Garden, the Chesapeake Arboretum or the Hermitage Museum & Gardens, there’s something truly romantic about getting married outdoors among towering trees and fragrant blossoms. Forget the decorations and let Mother Nature serve as your one and only backdrop. A bed and breakfast. One of the key points of achieving a charming country feel to your wedding is making the day intimate and special, which is the main intent of most B&B owners. Having your wedding at a delightful bed and breakfast or inn will assure that the day will be focused on your wedding alone.

ATTIRE FOR HER Skip the enormously poufy gown, and go simpler with either a shorter-length gown or a dress that’s more fitted. Pick a simple but feminine fabric such as lace, cotton organza or linen.

If you’re planning an outdoor affair, heels could get stuck in the ground. Opt for a pair of cowgirl boots, or choose some elegant flats or wedges. Even if your bouquet wasn’t just picked from a field of wildflowers, you can have your florist create this appearance simply by choosing blossoms that are more natural looking (such as lilacs, hydrangeas, sunflowers and camellias) and adding plenty of greenery. Don’t forget to fasten your arrangement with burlap and adorn with a cluster of buttons or a vintage brooch. Keep the veil simple by choosing a style such as a birdcage, or make your own headpiece using fresh or silk flowers.

ATTIRE FOR HIM Skip the uptight tuxedo and go for a more casual suit. You can have a little fun mixing colors and patterns to achieve a laid-back but dapper look. Choose a bowtie or necktie to complement the wedding colors, keeping in mind that everything doesn’t have to be too matchy-matchy. Suspenders are dreamy—especially in fun colors. Get a little whimsical with the shoes by choosing a style such as wingtips or oxfords.

Create some homemade signs using old boards and white paint. Using the signs, you can direct guests to notice areas such as “Parking,” “Wedding,” “Cocktail Hour,” “Bonfire” and more. You can also paint a sign with your names and the date and then later hang the sign in your home. You can create a beautifully rustic seating chart by using an old window pane and writing guests’ names on the glass, or you can remove the glass, string some twine inside the panes and hang individual escort cards from clothespins. Cut burlap pieces into triangles, fold over and sew (or hot glue) the edge and string twine through to make some nifty flags. You can mix and match fabrics or spell out words with these decorations.

The boutonniere can be made up of a simple wildflower posy, or it can be an adornment created from materials such as vintage buttons or bark.

DÉCOR When choosing chairs for the ceremony and reception, opt for natural wood instead of metal or plastic. Put Mason jars to use. If you’re having a late ceremony, you can place a candle in each jar to create a lit pathway, or you could hang the lighted jars from trees using a bit of twine. Jars also make adorable vases for flower arrangements, especially if covered in burlap or simply adorned with a twine ribbon. A final option is to serve drinks in them.

Gown: Pronovias ruffle skirt tulle “Usual” V-neck gown with Guipur applications and organza, $1,975. From Maya Couture, Norfolk. Necklace: “Ribbon Collar” torch edge and fusion 18k neckpiece, $23,500. yellow gold “Mermaid’s Choice” Pendant: pendant 18k yellow gold torch design with naturaledge and fusion golden, grey white South Sea pearl, Mexican and opal, colorless fire sapphire and nine red natural grey cultured pearls, $14,990. knot notes GUESTBOOK

FOOD

Instead of a guestbook with one of those little feather pens, line a vintage suitcase with a country cute fabric, and have guests write their well wishes and drop them in the suitcase. You could also use this idea as a place for guests to drop their cards.

Hors d’oeuvres that are presented on log slices make delightful serving trays.

Get someone to help you cut a log slice from a fallen tree or stump, and have your guests sign it. Then you can display this special sentiment in your home together. Have guests type out a message of love on an old typewriter. Just make sure the typewriter still functions, and you may want to have someone attending the station to show younger guests how it works. Guests can sign their messages on squares of pre-cut fabric, making sure to leave enough space around the edges. After the wedding, you can sew the squares together to make a quilt that you’ll treasure forever. If you’ve got an artsy friend, have them sketch a picture of a bare tree either on a piece of wood or on paper. Next to the tree, place an inkpad with either green ink or multiple fall colors (red, orange, yellow). Each guest will leave a thumbprint “leaf ” on the tree with each person’s print being unique. You can hang or frame this memento as a reminder of your romantically rustic day.

Go for a sophisticated potluck feel by offering a buffet of foods served in country-minded dishes. Comfort foods such as barbecue, fried chicken and ham biscuits will leave guests with a satisfied, down-home feeling. Have your caterer use local fruits and veggies to create delicious side dishes (bonus if the produce is harvested from the farm in which you’re having your wedding). Instead of one cake, go for an entire dessert bar complete with fruit pies, pie pops and miniature cakes.

TABLE SETTINGS Mix and match different patterns of vintage tablecloths for a fun, carefree effect. You can even do the same with plates! For a more natural effect, use white tablecloths with burlap table runners. Tie the ends with twine ribbon to dress it up, or sew lace edges around the runner for a shabby chic feel. For centerpieces, consider simple arrangements of wildflowers (daisies, black-eyed Susans and other selections from the yard) placed in mismatched vases or jars.

If your wedding is during late fall or winter where not as many flowers are in bloom, use branches in taller vases combined with arrangements of candles for a cozy and romantic atmosphere. Create memorable place card holders by cutting slits in small pieces of birchwood and then sliding name cards in place.

FAVORS Jars of locally canned jelly or jam will be a sweet reminder of your special day. If your wedding is on a farm, plant seeds of vegetables, herbs or flowers in small jars or cans, wrap them in decorative fabric and give your guests a gift that will keep on growing. Wrap an assortment of vintage candies in fabric, and tie with a ribbon.Your guests will appreciate this nostalgic touch. Give each guest a fragrant bar of homemade goat’s milk soap created from a local producer such as Tasha’s Own in Virginia Beach. Wooden coasters are easy to make using some thick tree branches, a handsaw (be careful!) and some clear varnish. Tie four coasters together HRB with twine, and you’ve got a darling set.

No More Stress Over the Dress— a Website that Unifies Brides and their Bridesmaids It was believed that in early Roman times, the purpose of having bridesmaids was to create a “protective shield” in case anyone tried to hurt the bride or steal her dowry. Today bridal parties have grown into a comrade of friends and family that assist and stand by the bride before the wedding, likely the most magical day of her life. Oftentimes, however, the traditions of friendship and support are clouded by stresses about colors, cuts, sizes and whether or not your longdistance bridesmaid can find that perfect dress you love!

Weddington Way CEO and Founder Ilana Stern created a solution that makes a tricky situation much less stressful. “I loved the mission of making something that had become a burden for brides back into an enjoyable experience that they could share with their best friends,” Stern says on her website, WeddingtonWay.com. At Weddington Way, brides can create online showrooms, set color schemes and choose their favorite bridesmaid dresses all designed by Weddington Way stylists. The site features fairlypriced designer dresses that are organized by neckline, season, color, fabric and even body shape.

Once a bride finds the dress she adores, she can add it to her “showroom” for all her bridesmaids to see. The bridal party can then share comments about the dresses, making the experience interactive. Since the site’s stylists design all dresses, bridesmaids can order their dresses right from the site. Weddington Way also offers junior bridesmaid and flower girl dresses, groomsmen attire and white dresses for the bride to wear at the reception or engagement party.Visit WeddingtonWay.com for more. 10 Ideas for a Memorable Exit that Your Guests Will Love | By Chelsea Sherman The recessional toss–it’s the last impression your guests will have of your wedding, and, more importantly, the final hoorah for you on your special day. So if getting pelted by rice or sticky from bubbles doesn’t sound appealing to you, maybe it’s time to get creative about what you give your guests to toss at the end of your big day. Here are 10 creative ideas for your recessional toss to make your getaway a unique and memorable event. 1. BALLOONS

Balloons are fun, inexpensive and visually appealing, and timing the release is easy. Go the extra step by choosing colors to match your theme. You can even be environmentally conscious by purchasing biodegradable ones!

2. BLACK EYED PEAS This Southern tradition is said to bring good luck to the newlyweds. They’re light, so you don’t have to worry about getting hit too hard, and of course they are completely natural, so if you miss some in the cleanup there’s no harm done. Find them at your local grocery store.

5. POM POMS Fun and fluffy, colorful pom poms are a great alternative to messy confetti–and they’re super cute. Find them at any craft store.

6. SPARKLERS Now, don’t actually have your guests throw these because that’s a fire hazard. But if your reception is later in the day and your send-off happens after dark, sparklers are a fun item to have your guests hold as you head off.

7. BEACH BALLS If you’re having a seaside wedding, what better way to be escorted out than with a bunch of miniature beach balls? Just remind the kids that it’s a wedding reception; not a soccer game.

8. LANTERNS

3. LAVENDER BUDS

This is probably the best-smelling item you could have thrown at you as you make your grand exit. Lavender buds are dainty, light and eco-friendly. The only downside is you might be picking the tiny buds out of your hair for a while afterward—but at least you will smell lovely!

4. HERBS More than a century ago, it was common for Victorian brides to choose a combination of herbs for their bouquet to express their sentiments and hope. Give each guest a satchel of herbs with a little card that explains the Victorian meaning of each herb that they’ll be tossing.

If your reception ends at night, another great send-off idea is the wish lantern. Fill the sky with lights as you walk off into your happily ever after, and do it guilt-free with some beautiful biodegradable options.

9. GLOW STICKS Here’s another great idea for a nighttime reception. Just make sure you have your guests pick them up and take them home as a souvenir afterward.

10. BUTTERFLIES Make the recessional a magical moment with the release of some beautiful butterflies. These critters are a bit more expensive than a couple bags of rice, but they make for a truly memorable send-off. HRB

The peplum style has been around for years. It’s made its way onto skirts, shirts and—the latest trend—wedding dresses. Gown designers start with a soft material for the fun flare and then add a streamlined bottom to create a sleek look that gives an extraordinary slimming effect that brides love. It’s safe to say that the waist-defining peplum is here to stay. SUBTLE AND STRIKING

Five Fun Uses for Photos at Your Wedding By Chelsea Sherman Photos are a great way to personalize your wedding décor and help capture lasting memories for the day. They can be set up as part of your themed decoration beforehand or taken throughout the reception as a way to create a visual journal of your big day. Here are a few simple, creative ways to incorporate photographs into your wedding. 1. STRING PHOTOS ON A CLOTHESLINE This is especially cute if your wedding or reception is outdoors. Photos can be hung up on clotheslines between trees as decoration for cuteness and entertainment. Choose photos of you and your new spouse throughout your relationship, or even include goofy pictures of your childhood. 2. PUT A POLAROID CAMERA AT EACH TABLE For a vintage alternative to a photo booth, have your guests take Polaroid pictures of themselves during the reception. They can write you a thoughtful note and pin the pictures up on a board or put them into a scrapbook for you to cherish for years after the wedding. 3. MAKE YOUR OWN VINTAGE PHOTO JARS Place your engagement photo in a mason jar filled with olive oil, and you have an instant vintage photo jar that can be used as decoration and even guest favors. The olive oil gives the picture a beautiful sepia tone that adds a rustic, old-timey look to your photo. 4. USE PHOTOS AS FAVORS FOR YOUR GUESTS. Put your favorite engagement picture on bookmarks or handheld fans. On the other side, you can print the program for the day or just fun facts about the couple. 5. DESIGNATE THE BRIDE AND GROOM SIDES OF THE AISLE WITH CHILDHOOD PHOTOS. Hanging photos on the seats at the ends of the aisles is a unique and fun way to designate which side of the room is for the bride’s family and friends and which is for the groom’s. HRB

A White

Wedding An Intimate Winter Ceremony Followed By An Elegant Winery Reception Creates A Vision Of Rustic Allure Compiled by Chelsea Sherman Photography by Macon Photography, Briana and Brian Macon www.Macon-Photography.com Who: Krista Embury, administrative assistant, and Jim White, owner of Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios. When: Jan. 12, 2013. Where: Bruton Parish, Williamsburg, and reception at Williamsburg Winery. Guest List: 150. Where They Met: The couple met through mutual friends. The Engagement: Jim and Krista were vacationing in Florida in April 2012 to de-stress and get out of the cold weather. On the third day of the trip they dined at a fancy restaurant on the beach. They were talking about how great the vacation had been when Jim said he was going to make it a lot better. He got down on one knee and proposed. Little did Krista know he had also hired a photographer to capture the moment, who had been taking pictures of them the whole time. Wedding Wishes: “I really wanted an intimate, warm feeling,” Krista says. “Since it was in the winter and we’re the Whites, I definitely wanted a white wedding.” What’s Next: The happy couple plans to continue working together to grow the fitness center, and they hope to eventually start a family. 26

“The Burton Parish has so much history; I just fell in love with it when we saw it,” Krista says.

ShOES

Krista wanted shoes that stood out and also matched her bridesmaids’ dresses. “I was having difficulty finding what I wanted in any of the bridal shops, so when I found these online I fell in love with them,” she says.

Winery reCePtion

“i visited the Williamsburg Winery years ago and took a tour with some friends, and i fell in love with it,” Krista says. “i don’t even think i had a boyfriend at the time, but i said whenever i get married, this is where it has to be.”

GroomSmen

two of the groomsmen were Jim’s brothers, and the other three were friends he’s met throughout the years. the best man was a good friend he met in Bible study.

rinGS

Krista’s engagement ring is a round-cut diamond with a platinum band. “i’ve always wanted something very classy and timeless as the single-stone band,” Krista says.

GettinG ready

Krista’s sister and other bridesmaids helped with the finishing touches. the dress consisted of three pieces, and Krista customized the gown with an additional tulle skirt and removable lace sleeves.

Winter Bouquet

the flowers Krista chose were purposely tousled and made to look natural. She knew she wanted to incorporate baby’s breath and lamb’s ear into her bouquet. “i thought it had a rustic and wintry feel to it. We worked hard to make it kind of hand-picked,” Krista says.

PearlS

Krista chose pearls for her jewelry to complement the rustic, intimate feel of the wedding.

CaKe

the beautiful cake from Carrot tree Kitchens in Williamsburg perfectly complemented the couple’s white wedding theme, simply adorned at the top with Krista and Jim’s initials. the three layers were almond, carrot cake and chocolate

BrideSmaidS

one of the bridesmaids was Krista’s sister, one was a cousin, and the rest were longtime friends from college and grade school. the bridesmaid dresses were designed to be twisted at the top into any style. “i chose those because i wanted the girls to feel comfortable in their dresses and wear them any way they wanted,” Krista says. .

hen hearing the news that sleeved gowns were back in fashion, many brides-to-be may have reverted

back to the idea of gowns that their mothers and grandmothers wore on their wedding days. While it’s true that sleeves can evoke a more modest, sophisticated feel, they can also be playful and ultra feminine at the same time, depending on the length and style. Dare to be brave by showing a little less skin and you may even feel more chic and sexy.

Haute Chocolates Terrific Truffles Modeled After A Favorite Winter Drink

Chocolate is a treat for all seasons, but as the weather cools, hot chocolate becomes one of the preferred methods of enjoyment. We take artisan hot chocolate and blend it with other fabulous things to create delicious truffles to share with guests. Small, yes, but these bite-sized flavor bombs deliver an indulgent mouthful of decadence. HRM food editor Patrick Evans-Hylton (www.PatrickEvansHylton.com) has developed a distinctive blend honoring the bold flavors of colonial chocolate, however any premium hot chocolate mix will do.

Chocolate was a sought-after flavor in 18th-century Virginia; drinking chocolate was a popular beverage for all classes of citizens, and on most coffeehouse menus.

Hot Chocolate Truffles IngredIents

Method

1/2 pound semisweet chocolate, finely chopped 1/2 pound bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped 1 cup heavy cream 1 tablespoon prepared hot chocolate 1/2 tablespoon orange zest 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/8 teaspoon ground clove 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 1/2 cup hot chocolate powder mix 3 tablespoons cinnamon

Combine chopped semisweet and bittersweet chocolate in a large heatproof bowl. Heat the heavy cream in a small saucepan to a boil and remove from heat. Slowly pour the cream atop the chocolate and whisk until chocolate has melted. Add the prepared hot chocolate, orange zest, vanilla, clove and salt and whisk. Set the bowl to the side for 1 hour, then, using a melon ball scoop, spoon out balls of the chocolate onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Refrigerate until firm, about 30–40 minutes. In another large bowl, whisk together confectioners’ sugar, hot chocolate powder mix and cinnamon. Remove truffles from refrigerator, quickly roll balls in your hands to round out, and roll in confectioners’ sugar mixture to coat. Place onto another parchment paper-lined baking sheet and refrigerate until ready to package. We place a few truffles in decorative baking cups, wrap in tulle, gather the top and tie with decorative ribbon. Yields around 5 dozen truffles n HRB
