ampton presents opportunities unique in Coastal Virginia, whether you are interested in history, shopping, recreation, beaches or delicious local cuisine. Learn about Hampton’s history from the sea to the stars through the exhibits and artifacts at the Hampton History Museum and launch into the realm of space exploration at the Virginia Air & Space Center. Visit Fort Monroe, one the nation’s newest national monuments, to learn how a major blow to slavery was struck at the Union-held fort. A tour of the Casemate Museum inside the moated stone fortress reveals the many significant occurrences that have taken place at Old Point Comfort. Stand beneath the limbs of Emancipation Oak on the campus of Hampton University, the site of the first Southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. The Booker T. Washington Memorial is located within view of the tree. You can easily visit other African American heritage sites on the campus and around Hampton by following our Family Tree Heritage sites guide available at the Hampton Visitor Center. Complementing Hampton’s heritage are its many cultural opportunities. Hampton University Museum features a collection of more than 9,000 works of multicultural art and artifacts; the Charles H. Taylor Arts Center showcases regional artists through changing exhibits, and the world-class artists performing at The American Theatre and Hampton Coliseum dazzle during the evening hours. Water recreation is a major draw, highlighted by Chesapeake Bay beaches at Buckroe, Fort Monroe and Grandview Nature Preserve. Buckroe also features a park, playground and fishing pier. Spend some time on the water during a Miss Hampton II harbor tour or Ocean Eagle fishing excursion. Our creeks and rivers also offer opportunities for paddlers, and there are several hiking and jogging trails to explore on land. Three distinct Hampton districts present shopping opportunities that are unique to their special surroundings. At Peninsula Town Center you’ll find your favorite national retailers, while eclectic boutiques await in Downtown Hampton, and antique, book, and other specialty retailers are located in historic Phoebus. Our dining is just as varied! The calendar of special events inside the pages of this guide along with our visitor information specialists will assist you in making your Hampton visit as exciting or restful as you wish. Downtown Hampton
“P
eople keep telling me that Downtown Hampton is ‘Virginia’s Best Kept Secret’ and they may be right,” said Jimmy Cerracchio, newly appointed Executive Director of the Downtown Hampton Development Partnership. “Amongst our community is a fast growing local food scene with top-notch restaurants, music and arts, history, shopping, and people fueling an independent spirit. Four hundred years and still growing, this place is America’s original downtown.”
One of the oldest cities in America, Downtown Hampton is home to the original 17th century seaport that served as a port-of-entry for commercial vessels from Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. Four centuries later, this waterfront area is enhanced with cobblestone streets lined with red brick sidewalks, distinctive shops, and innovative restaurants to satisfy any palate. Attractions, pubs, art galleries, shops, marinas and parks also fill this waterfront district with a blend of exciting things to do.
Begin your exploration of Downtown Hampton with a visit to the Hampton Visitor Center, located in the Hampton History Museum (120 Old Hampton Lane). The Hampton Visitor Center staff can provide assistance on local attractions, and you can also purchase the Sea to Stars ticket here, which is good for a one time admission to the Virginia Air & Space Center, Riverside Digital 3D IMAX Theater, Miss Hampton II Harbor Cruise, Hampton History Museum and the historic Hampton Carousel. Adult tickets are $39 and tickets for youth ages 4-11 are $25. The Hampton History Museum is also ideal for history buffs, as its nine permanent galleries detail the varied and historically critical role of Hampton for over 400 years. Gracious hospitality is extended at downtown accommodations Crowne Plaza Hampton Marina Hotel and the Magnolia House Inn Bed & Breakfast. Both are comfortably located for exploring downtown on foot.

Phoebus
oted for its charming architecture and antiquing bargains, Phoebus began as an isolated fishing village named Mill Creek after the body of water next to the little settlement. Because of its location, the waterfront community played a pivotal role during the early years that defined America.
Phoebus has been neighbor to strategically-positioned military encampments guarding the lower Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads since 1609. During the Revolutionary War, area settlements were burned by invading British troops. During the Civil War, residents were situated between the Union-held Fort Monroe and Confederate forces. Slaves sought and found hope for freedom at Fort Monroe, and encampments of refugees and Union forces resulted, known as Slabtown and Camp Hamilton, respectively. After the Civil War, the village became home to former Union soldiers, freed men and women, and local watermen. In 1900, the village was incorporated as a town and named after its most prominent citizen and entrepreneur, Harrison Phoebus. Finally in 1952, Phoebus became a part of the city of Hampton. In Phoebus, the past and the present come together to provide unique shopping and dining in a historic, welcoming waterfront community. It is a place where you can antique by day and enjoy the evening with dinner and a dazzling theatre performance. Buildings that once housed saloons, grocery stores and pharmacies are now home to vintage apparel, collectibles, and specialty shops. Performances at The American Theatre consistently impress audiences and reviewers alike, and can be decadently paired with tapas or dessert at nearby restaurants. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register, Phoebus continues to maintain its distinct identity. You can experience Phoebus’ charm and historic past by iPod tour and the Discover Hampton Smartphone app found at visithampton.com. Fort Monroe
F
ort Monroe, recently designated as a National Monument, is located on Old Point Comfort where the Hampton Roads harbor meets the Chesapeake Bay. Fort Monroe served as an Army installation with a rich cultural and military history until September 15, 2011. The point of land has been a place of strategic importance since Fort Algernourne was erected on the site in 1609. It was affectionately known as Cape Comfort because the weary colonists found the site brought them “great comfort.” To this day, the name Old Point Comfort is frequently heard in reference to Fort Monroe and this historic area of Virginia. On August 20, 1619, the first Africans were brought to the English colonies at Old Point Comfort. Later fortifications would be built here, but none would be permanent structures until construction began on Fort Monroe in 1819. The fort was designed by engineer Simon Bernard under the direction of President James Monroe. Hampton Roads, the body of water just outside the stone fort walls, is a natural deep-water harbor and historically was the key to controlling the Chesapeake Bay and access by water to the capital of the colonies, the Commonwealth of Virginia and Washington, D.C. The fort’s construction was begun by employing the labor of slaves, who were gradually replaced by military convicts. The granite for the walls came from rock quarries in Virginia and Maryland, while the other building materials were supplied by local contractors. The fort covers 63 acres of land with its walls stretching 1.3 miles around. Completed in 1834, the stone fort is believed to be the largest ever built in the United States. The water in the moat ranges from three to five feet deep and is fed through a gate from Mill Creek. At the time construction was completed only the Point Comfort Light existed beyond the moat. The lighthouse was the only permanent structure at Old Point Comfort at the time the point was captured by the British during the War of 1812. Consequently, the war was impetus for the construction of the stone fortification.
The Fort Monroe Geocache Hunt is a fun way to familiarize yourself with Old Point Comfort history and you get a prize when you complete the puzzle! Call the Hampton Visitor Center at 800-800-2202 • 757-727-1102, or visit www.visithampton.com/ discover/fort-monroe-geocache

Miss Hampton II
A legacy of maritime adventure It’s almost impossible to see all the historic sites and scenery of Hampton from the shore. The Miss Hampton II takes nautical adventurers on a three-hour tour that brings to life stories of Blackbeard the Pirate, Hampton University, Fort Wool, the world’s largest naval installation, and Hampton’s remarkable history that spans from the first settlers’ arrival from the sea to the first American astronauts to explore space. Miss Hampton II has navigated Hampton’s waterways since 1991. Captain Mike Hebert and crew set sail with 120 passengers, gently churning upriver from the Downtown Hampton waterfront. The 65-foot double-decker vessel provides commentary along the way to Fort Wool, a man-made island fortification dating to 1819. Passengers disembark at Fort Wool and enjoy a leisurely walking tour of this bastion that has, with Fort Monroe, guarded the entrance to Hampton Roads for nearly two centuries. Commentary on the Civil War’s March 1862 “Battle of the Ironclads” that took place in Hampton Roads, and narrative on Naval Station Norfolk are other tour highlights. Tour tickets are available for purchase at the Hampton Maritime Center located adjacent to the Crowne Plaza Hotel and the Hampton Public Pier. The Miss Hampton crew offers sandwiches and lunch items, snacks, and beverages available for purchase on board.

Langley Speedway From its modest opening as a dirt track with few amenities to today’s showplace, Langley Speedway has offered an exciting pastime for stock car racing fans throughout the region. The track is the second-oldest track and longest continuously operating sports facility in the country. In the late 1940s the property on North Armistead Avenue was home to Dude Ranch, an eight-tenths-mile track for thoroughbred racing. The owners occasionally hosted stock car races, which generally attracted more fans than the horses. They eventually shortened the oval and turned their attention to cars. In 1963, the track was leased and renamed Langley Speedway. Today, the track entertains thousands of spectators on race night with facilities that include bleacher seating, skyboxes, VIP suites, multiple concession stands and a modern race control and media booth. Langley presents good, clean family fun and tickets are reasonably priced, allowing an affordable and exciting night out. Fans are frequently invited into the pits to meet the drivers and for autographs. Langley Speedway has served as starting line for many NASCAR driving careers, including those of Darrell Waltrip, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Denny Hamlin, who won a championship at Langley before becoming a top performer in the NASCAR Cup Series. Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is flat and harder than others to drive. Enjoying a season that runs April through October, Langley fans travel from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region to attend the season’s races, including the Hampton Heat. The 200-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Late Model Stock Division Car race annually lures some of the best top Late Model division drivers to Hampton. T he 150th Anniversary of the Civil War
Today’s City of Hampton played a strategic role during the Civil War, forever changing the ideas and realities of freedom in the U.S. There are a wealth of Hampton sites, landmarks and museums you can visit to gain a greater understanding of this pivotal period in our nation’s, and Virginia’s, history. When Virginia seceded from the Union on April 17, 1861, Fort Monroe remained in Union hands. Hampton became a microcosm of the greater conflict between the states. On May 23, 1861, three daring enslaved men, known to us as Frank Baker, James Townsend, and Shepherd Mallory, sought sanctuary at Fort Monroe. On May 24, Major General Benjamin Franklin Butler reasoned that because the men were held as property and were being used to aid the Confederates in the war against the Union, the Army was not required to return them to their masters and could instead hold them as “contraband of war.” Hundreds and then thousands of freedom seekers journeyed to Fort Monroe hoping for their refuge, and the fort became known as “Freedom’s Fortress.” Weeks later, Hampton’s Big Bethel became the site of the firstland engagement of the Civil War and resulted in the first combat deaths sustained on both sides during the Civil War. Months later, on August 7, 1861, Hampton’s homes, businesses and churches were burned by Confederate troops in an attempt to prevent their occupation by Union troops and the “Contraband.” Carrying torches they fanned into the four quadrants of King and Queen Streets. By dawn over 500 buildings were destroyed. After the burning, only the charred, partially collapsed walls remained from St. John’s Church’s original structure. We encourage you to visit St. John’s Church parish museum and churchyard cemetery. As the war ensued, Hampton’s burned and abandoned town center became the “Grand Contraband Camp” and the center of life for over 10,000 freedom seekers. The Battle of the Ironclads, CSS Virginia and USS Monitor, occurred on March 9, 1862, in the harbor off Hampton’s shore within sight of Fort Monroe and Fort Wool. The battle marked the beginning of the end of the wooden warship era. At the Casemate Museum, you can learn about the battle and visit the room where Confederate President Jefferson Davis was held following the Civil War. While in Hampton, visit Hampton University campus and stand beneath the limbs of Emancipation Oak, so named as it served as site for the first southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. Hampton’s many historic sites are interpreted through Civil War Trails and Hampton Heritage markers. Similar interpretive markers are located throughout Hampton to familiarize visitors with Hampton’s 400-year history.

During segregation, Hampton’s Bay Shore Beach, located on the Chesapeake Bay, was one of the most popular African American resorts on the East Coast. What began in 1898 as a four-room cottage grew to a three-story beachfront hotel with 70 rooms and long porches facing the water. The hotel and surrounding property were privately redeveloped in 1973. Casemate Museum & Fort Monroe Casemate 20, Bernard Road • 757-788-3391 National Park Service • 757-722-3678
On May 24, 1861 at Fort Monroe, Major General Benjamin F. Butler accepted three men, purported to have been Shepard Mallory, Frank Baker, and James Townsend, who were seeking their freedom. Since Virginia had seceded from the Union, and as a foreign country was no longer subject to American law, Butler refused to uphold the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 and determined the men “contraband of war.” They would not be returned to their Confederate owner. News of this extraordinary development spread. Fort Monroe quickly earned the nickname “Freedom’s Fortress.” Within two months, over 900 enslaved men, women, and children had escaped to Fort Monroe. Thousands more would follow. The Casemate Museum features the room in which Confederate President Jefferson Davis was held following the Civil War. The museum features one of the most exceptional collections of African, NativeAmerican and African-American art in the United States. The museum and the school, established as Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, date to 1868 and were found to educate formerly enslaved African Americans. Hampton University’s campus is home to six national historic landmarks. Among them are Emancipation Oak—where Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was read to residents of Hampton, Memorial Chapel, Virginia Cleveland Hall, and Booker T. Washington Memorial Garden and Statue. You are also encouraged to visit the campus cemetery, final resting place for Gen. Samuel Chapman Armstrong, founder, and many other former principals, presidents and students. Hampton’s newest municipal building was named for First Lieutenant Ruppert Leon Sargent. Born in Hampton January 6, 1938, Lt. Sargent attended Hampton Institute prior to entering the Army in 1959. He was killed on March 15, 1967 in Vietnam when he threw himself over two grenades tossed by Viet Cong soldiers, an effort that saved the lives of others in his unit. A Medal of Honor recipient, and the only one to be born and raised in Hampton, Sargent is buried in the Hampton National Cemetery. A bronze bust of Sargent and his medal are displayed in the building’s lobby. Trusty House 76 West County Street
William H. Trusty was born in 1862 of freed parents and rose to become a successful businessman and civic leader. Trusty built this 1897 house as a residence for him and his wife. He was one of the first African Americans elected to public office in Virginia, serving on Phoebus Town Council in 1901. He died suddenly in 1902 at the age of 40. The Trusty House is now a private residence and not open to the public. Tuskegee Airmen Exhibit at Virginia Air & Space Center 600 Settlers Landing Road • 757-727-0900
The controversial Tuskegee Experiment, which cleared the way for African Americans to join ranks of the Army Air Force, was implemented in 1941 to prove blacks could fly combat missions. Dozens of Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) students were recruited for their flight training at Tuskegee Army Airfield in Alabama. The first aviation cadet class completed training in March 1942. The Tuskegee pilots never lost an aircraft they protected during their many escort missions. The Tuskegee Airmen Experiment was deemed a great success as the Airmen flew over 15,000 sorties and more than 1,500 missions. It has been said these Airmen claimed a Double Victory as they fought two wars—one against a Nazi military force overseas and the other against racism at home and abroad. ampton, the 400-year old city located in the heart of Coastal Virginia, is multi-faceted; rich in Civil War history, African American heritage, water recreation, and abundant shopping and dining opportunities. A visit to Hampton inspires travelers to return again and again, whether for leisure visits or for major industry conventions. The cultural landscape of North America’s oldest, continuous, English-speaking settlement is dotted with historic attractions that interpret Hampton’s role in pivotal American decisions and milestones. On November 1, 2011 President Obama named Fort Monroe a National Monument. Visitors are encouraged to explore the nation’s largest stone fort, cross the moat to explore within the walls, and climb Fort Monroe’s walls to enjoy the spectacular view of the harbor. At the Casemate Museum you can learn about Fort Monroe’s vital position at the entrance to the harbor and see the cell where Jefferson Davis was held at the conclusion of the Civil War. A tour aboard the Miss Hampton II reveals Fort Monroe’s companion fortification, Fort Wool, located across the channel at Hampton Roads’ entrance.

Museum, founded in 1868, has a collection of more than 9,000 works of contemporary art and artifacts spanning African, African-American, Pan-American and Native-American cultures. The Hampton History Museum located in Downtown Hampton provides a glimpse the major moments in Hampton history that helped shape our great nation. From the Native American gallery depicting the lifestyle of the Virginia Indians living at Kecoughtan prior to the first settlers’ arrival, to the colonial and Antebellum galleries, you will witness life in Hampton during a simpler time. The life-like charred ruins reflecting the burning of Hampton in 1861 in the Civil War gallery illuminate the reconstruction of Hampton and how greatly the seafood industry impacted Hampton’s post-war economy. The founding of NACA, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, in 1917 in Hampton was the precursor of NASA and the founding site of the American space program, and a perfect segue to your next Hampton attraction! Your exploration of America past, present and future continues at the Virginia Air & Space Center and Riverside Digital 3D IMAX Theater. The result of Hampton’s nearly century-long relationship with NASA, there are more than 100 flight simulators and hands-on exhibits of air and space innovations. The Riverside 3D IMAX Theater presents digital feature films and documentaries on a five-story screen. Next door, the Hampton Carousel spins visitors on hand-carved horses and chariots built in 1920 by European artisans. The Miss Hampton II harbor tour boat and the Ocean Eagle fishing boat are located nearby along the Hampton waterfront. There are many historic churches in downtown Hampton and the surrounding communities. The parish of St. John’s Church, the oldest Anglican parish in North America, was founded in 1610. You can visit the church sanctuary and hear a recorded introduction. The fascinating cemetery is an amazing adventure in itself, with headstones spanning more than three centuries. The charming streets surrounding St. John’s are lined with small shops, restaurants, art galleries, and parks. The streets and downtown parks come alive with special events from April through October. Citywide events and concerts featuring internationally acclaimed artists draw crowds to Hampton Coliseum and to The American Theatre year-round. You are sure to adore the boutique and antique shopping in Downtown Hampton and Phoebus. The locally-owned dining establishments receive raves from Hampton residents. National favorites and still more restaurants unique to other parts of Virginia can be found at Peninsula Town Center in the Coliseum Central District. An array of more than 70 national and regionally-owned shops is presented at

ith spectators filling venues from sandy beaches to indoor tracks, Hampton is home to dozens of sporting events throughout the year. Indoor venues such as the Boo Williams Sportsplex, Hampton Coliseum, and the Hampton Roads Convention Center, plus a wide range of outdoor venues including the Chesapeake Bay, give Hampton the potential to host virtually any athletic competition. With such annual events as Virginia Duals, NIKE Boo Williams Invitational, and Hampton Cup Regatta, Hampton has carved out a niche for itself among sportsfriendly destinations.
You don’t have to be part of a team to get in the action. For those fun-seeking people who are not peak-conditioned athletes, the new Life’s A Beach “Slacker” Triathlon in June encourages even the most devoted couch potato to get off the sofa and have some fun! Starting with a 200-yard ocean swim at Buckroe Beach, followed by a five-mile fat tire bike ride and a two-mile beach run, the race will finish with an awards ceremony and Bodacious Beach Bash. Hampton will again host the Crawlin’ Crab Half Marathon and 5K this October. This event, presented by Bon Secours in Motion, celebrates its second year as runners “crawl” past the beautiful waterfront in downtown Hampton, making their way through historic neighborhoods, and finishing at the Hampton Roads Convention Center where they are greeted with unique keepsakes and a post-race party. Many nationally-known athletes were born, raised, and educated in Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson and York County. Sports fans will enjoy a visit to the Athletic Hall of Fame of the Lower Virginia Peninsula located at the Boo Williams Sportsplex. Established in 1971, the free display recognizes the competitive achievements of athletic notables who have brought honor and recognition to themselves and to this region. Hampton venues and events support athletes of all capabilities and fitness levels, even if spectating is more your speed! Spend the day on the water enjoying boating, fishing, or bay play; finish your day at a Peninsula Pilots baseball game or enjoying the thrill of NASCAR racing at Langley Speedway. Walk or bike the scenic trails at Grandview Nature Preserve and Sandy Bottom Nature Park. Or catch the Hampton University Pirates in action during a NCAA Division 1 football game. For information on specific events in Hampton, please see our 2014 Calendar of Events on pages 40-44.
