Welcome to Hampton

Hampton presents opportunities unique in Coastal Virginia, whether you are interested in history, shopping, recreation, beaches or delicious local cuisine. Learn about Hampton’s history from the sea to the stars through the exhibits and artifacts at the downtown Hampton History Museum, and across the street launch into the realm of space exploration at the Virginia Air & Space Center. Visit Fort Monroe, one the nation’s newest national monuments, to learn how a major blow to slavery was struck with the Contraband Decision at the Union-held fort. A tour of the Casemate Museum inside the moated stone fortress reveals the many significant occurrences that have taken place at Old Point Comfort. Stand beneath the limbs of Emancipation Oak on the campus of Hampton University, the site of the first Southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. The Booker T. Washington Memorial is located within view of the tree. You can easily visit other African American heritage sites on the campus and around Hampton by following our Family Tree Heritage sites guide available at the Hampton Visitor Center. Complementing Hampton’s heritage are its many cultural opportunities. Hampton University Museum features a collection of more than 9,000 works of multicultural art and artifacts; the Charles H. Taylor Arts Center showcases regional artists through changing exhibits; and the world-class artists performing at The American Theatre and the Hampton Coliseum dazzle during the evening hours. Water recreation is a major draw, highlighted by Chesapeake Bay beaches at Buckroe, Fort Monroe and Grandview Nature Preserve. Buckroe also features a park, playground and fishing pier. Spend some time on the water during a Miss Hampton II harbor tour or Ocean Eagle fishing excursion. Our creeks and rivers also offer opportunities for paddlers, and there are several hiking and jogging trails to explore on land. Three distinct Hampton districts present shopping opportunities that are unique to their special surroundings. At Peninsula Town Center you’ll find your favorite national retailers, while eclectic boutiques await in Downtown Hampton, and antique, book, and other specialty retailers are located in historic Phoebus. Our dining is just as varied! The calendar of special events inside the pages of this guide along with our visitor information specialists will assist you in making your Hampton visit as exciting or restful as you wish. Thank you for choosing to visit Hampton.

Sincerely, George Wallace Mayor, City of Hampton

Hampton Roads Convention Center

Celebrates 10 Years

T

he traditional 10 year wedding anniversary gift is tin or aluminum. They represent the pliability needed from each partner in order for the relationship to succeed. This symbolism fits well with the anniversary of the Hampton Roads Convention Center, for Hampton attributes 10 years of flexible customer service to a decade of successful partnership between the center and the many event planners who have returned to the venue year after year. During the past 10 years, the center has hosted an array of galas, conventions, sporting events, consumer shows, hobby rallies and leisure visitors from across the country, and in some cases, across the globe. Many original events and conventions first hosted in 2005 at the time the building opened continue to return. The city attributes the exceptionally high rate of return business to excellent customer service and attention to detail. Customer satisfaction remains a priority. In its very first year, the Hampton Roads Convention Center welcomed the MidAtlantic Quilt Festival, one of the largest quilting events on the eastern seaboard. The show has become one of the center’s most well-attended public events. Other popular annual consumer shows include the Hampton Roads Tattoo Arts Festival, My Time Woman’s Show, Southeastern Guns & Knives Show, Virginia RV Show, and the

Bodacious Bazaar & Art Festival. Not to be outdone, the center has hosted its share of major sporting events, including the Hampton VA Sports Festival, USA Gymnastics, Mid-Atlantic Power League Volleyball, and the Mike Tomlin Gridiron Legends Tailgate. The facility boasts an impressive calendar of events in 2015 and beyond. May we note, tin and aluminum are recyclable too? They are fitting symbols of the center’s green side. The 344,000 square-foot environmentally-friendly, VirginiaGreen certified Hampton Roads Convention Center seeks to reduce the tourism industry’s impact on the environment. Years ago it eliminated the use of Styrofoam and implemented the use of water coolers in lieu of bottled water. Motion sensors on toilets, the use of green products and cleaners, and a recycling program are among the other initiatives in place. While most Hampton Roads Convention Center visitors come to attend a meeting, banquet or athletic event, many arrive simply to enjoy the art exhibit. Twice a year, selected works by regional artists are displayed throughout the center. Coined “Halls of Art,” the impressive showcase of artwork changes each May and November and all of the work is available for purchase. There is no charge to peruse the artwork and taking time to enjoy the display is highly recommended. 2015 Hampton Visitor Guide I VisitHampton.com

Fort Monroe

ort Monroe, a National Monument, is located on Old Point Comfort where the Hampton Roads harbor meets the Chesapeake Bay. Fort Monroe served as an Army installation with a rich cultural and military history until September 15, 2011. The point of land has been a place of strategic importance since before English colonization. It was known as Cape Comfort because weary colonists found the site brought them “great comfort.” To this day, the name Old Point Comfort is frequently heard in reference to Fort Monroe and this historic area of Virginia. On August 20, 1619, the first “twenty and odd” Africans were brought to the English colonies at Point Comfort. A series of fortifications occupied the site between 1609 and 1749, but none would be permanent until construction began on Fort Monroe in 1819. Fort Monroe was designed by French engineer Simon Bernard and named in honor of President James Monroe. Hampton Roads, the body of water just outside the stone fort walls, is a natural deepwater harbor and historically key to controlling the Chesapeake Bay and access by water to the capital of the colonies, the Commonwealth of Virginia and Washington, DC. The fort’s construction was

begun by employing the labor of the local enslaved population who were gradually replaced by military convicts. The granite for the walls came from rock quarries in northern Virginia and Maryland, while the other building materials were supplied by local contractors. The fort covers 63 acres of land with its walls stretching 1.3 miles around. Completed in 1834, the stone fort is the largest ever built in the United States. The water in the moat is fed through a gate from Mill Creek and the depth changes with the tide. At the time of construction was completed, only the Point Comfort Lighthouse existed beyond the moat. The Lighthouse was constructed in 1802 and was the only permanent structure at Old Point Comfort during the War of 1812. Consequently, the war was the impetus for the construction of the stone fortification. During the Civil War, thousands of enslaved people sought refuge at Fort Monroe and were declared Contraband of War by Union commander General Benjamin Butler earning the fort the nickname “Freedom’s Fortress.” Fort Monroe’s history is interpreted for visitors at the Casemate Museum located at 20 Bernard Road. Self-guided walking tours of the fort are available as well as the National Park Service’s Fort Monroe Junior

Ranger Program. The Casemate Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:30 am – 4:30 pm and open daily Memorial Day to Labor Day. Programs and events at Fort Monroe are presented through a collaboration of the Fort Monroe Authority, the City of Hampton, and National Park Service. For information please call 757-788-3391 for the Casemate Museum or 757-722-3678 (FORT) for Fort Monroe National Monument.

Phoebus and Confederate forces. Slaves sought and found freedom at Fort Monroe, and encampments of refugees and Union forces resulted, known as Slabtown and Camp Hamilton, respectively. After the Civil War, the village became home to former Union soldiers, freed men and women, and local watermen. In 1900, the village was incorporated as a town and named after its most prominent citizen and entrepreneur, Harrison Phoebus. Finally in 1952, Phoebus became a part of the city of Hampton. In Phoebus, the past and the present come together to provide unique shopping and dining in a historic, welcoming waterfront community. It is a place where you can antique by day and enjoy the evening with dinner and a dazzling theatre performance. Buildings that once housed saloons, grocery stores and pharmacies are now home to shops that deal in vintage apparel, antiques and collectibles, design and creative businesses, jewelers, an auction house, pet groomers, cabinet and canvas makers, and other specialty shops. Performances at The American Theatre consistently impress audiences and reviewers alike, and can be decadently paired with tapas or dessert at nearby restaurants. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register, Phoebus continues to maintain its distinct identity. You can experience Phoebus’ charm and historic past by iPod tour and the Discover Hampton Smartphone app found at visithampton.com. For additional information, contact the Partnership for a New Phoebus at 757-727-0808.

N

oted for its charming architecture and antiquing bargains, Phoebus began as an isolated fishing village named Mill Creek after the body of water next to the little settlement. Because of its location, the waterfront

community played a pivotal role during the early years that defined America. Phoebus has been neighbor to strategically-positioned military encampments guarding the lower Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads since 1609. During the Revolutionary War, area settlements were burned by invading British troops. During the Civil War, residents were situated between the Union-held Fort Monroe

Hampton, the 400-year old city located in the heart of Coastal Virginia, is multifaceted; rich in Civil War history, African American heritage, water recreation, and abundant shopping and dining opportunities. The Hampton History Museum is a great place to begin your explorations. The museum introduces Hampton’s 400-year history in its galleries, interpreting the city’s role in pivotal American decisions and milestones. The Hampton Visitor Center shares this location so you can gather great information on the sites you wish to explore and purchase money-saving admission tickets. The Sea to Stars Ticket, for example, combines admission to the Virginia Air & Space Center, an IMAX film, a ride on the Hampton Carousel, a cruise aboard the Miss Hampton II and admission to the Hampton History Museum for one low price. Buy adult tickets for $39 and youth tickets for $25. The Virginia Air & Space Center features more than 100 flight simulators and hands-on exhibits of air and space innovations. The Riverside 3D IMAX Theater presents digital feature films and documentaries on a five-story screen. Next door, the Hampton Carousel spins visitors on hand-carved horses and chariots built in 1920 by European artisans. Fort Monroe visitors are encouraged to cross the moat encircling the stone fort to explore the Casemate Museum and many historic landmarks and to climb the fort walls to enjoy the spectacular view of the harbor. See the cell where Jefferson Davis was held at the conclusion of the Civil War. A tour aboard the Miss Hampton II reveals Fort Monroe’s companion fortification, Fort Wool, located across the channel at Hampton Roads’ entrance. The Miss Hampton II harbor tour boat and the Ocean Eagle fishing boat are located nearby along the Hampton waterfront. Hampton University Museum, founded in 1868, has a collection of more than 9,000 works of contemporary art and artifacts spanning African, African-American, Pan-American and Native-American cultures. The story of the American Revolution, from the beginnings of colonial unrest to the formation of the new nation, unfolds at the Yorktown Victory Center through indoor exhibits and outdoor re-creations of a Continental Army encampment and Revolution-period farm. The museums are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Christmas and New Year’s days. For more information call (888) 593-4682 or visit www.historyisfun.org.

The 150th

Anniversary of the Civil War

T

oday’s City of Hampton played a strategic role during the Civil War, forever changing the ideas and realities of freedom in the U.S. There are a wealth of Hampton sites, landmarks and museums you can visit to gain a greater understanding of this pivotal period in our nation’s, and Virginia’s, history. When Virginia seceded from the Union on April 17, 1861, Fort Monroe remained in Union hands. Hampton became a microcosm of the greater conflict between the states. On May 23, 1861, three daring enslaved men, known to us today as Frank Baker, James Townsend, and Shepherd Mallory, sought sanctuary at Fort Monroe. On May 24, Major General Benjamin Franklin Butler reasoned that because the men were held as property and were being used to aid the Confederates in the war against the Union, the Army was not required to return them to their masters and could instead hold them as “contraband of war.”

Hundreds and then thousands of freedom seekers journeyed to Fort Monroe hoping for their refuge, and the fort became known as “Freedom’s Fortress.” Weeks later, Hampton’s Big Bethel became the site of the first land engagement of the Civil War and resulted in the first combat deaths sustained on both sides during the Civil War. Months later, on August 7, 1861, Hampton’s homes, businesses and churches were burned by Confederate troops in an attempt to prevent their occupation by Union troops and the “Contraband.” Carrying torches, they fanned into the four quadrants of King and Queen Streets. By dawn over 500 buildings were destroyed. After the burning, only the charred, partially collapsed walls remained from St. John’s Church original structure. We encourage you to visit St. John’s Church, its parish museum and churchyard cemetery. As the war ensued, Hampton’s burned and abandoned town center

became the “Grand Contraband Camp” and the center of life for over 10,000 freedom seekers. The Battle of the Ironclads, CSS Virginia and USS Monitor, occurred on March 9, 1862, in the harbor off Hampton’s shore within sight of Fort Monroe and Fort Wool. The battle marked the beginning of the end of the wooden warship era. At the Casemate Museum, you can learn about the battle and visit the room where Confederate President Jefferson Davis was held following the Civil War. While in Hampton, visit Hampton University campus, and stand beneath the limbs of Emancipation Oak, so named as it served as site of the first southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. Hampton’s many historic sites are interpreted through Civil War Trails and Hampton Heritage markers. Similar interpretive markers are located throughout Hampton to familiarize visitors with Hampton’s 400-year history.

ith spectators filling venues from sandy beaches to indoor tracks, Hampton is home to dozens of sporting events throughout the year. Indoor venues such as the Boo Williams Sportsplex, Hampton Coliseum, and the Hampton Roads Convention Center, plus a wide range of outdoor venues including the Chesapeake Bay, give Hampton the potential to host virtually any athletic competition. With such annual events as Virginia Duals, NIKE Boo Williams Invitational, and Hampton Cup Regatta, Hampton has carved out a niche for itself among sports-friendly destinations. Two marathon events will return this year, including the Life’s a Beach “Slacker” Triathlon and the Crawlin’ Crab Half Marathon and 5k. For those fun-seeking people who are not peak-conditioned athletes, the Life’s a Beach triathlon in June encourages even the most devoted couch potato to get off the sofa and have some fun! Starting with a 200-yard ocean swim at Buckroe Beach, followed by a five-mile fat tire bike ride and a two-mile beach run, the race will finish with an awards ceremony and Bodacious Beach Bash. In October, J&A Racing fans will gather for the Crawlin’ Crab Half Marathon and 5K. This event celebrates its third year as runners “crawl” past the beautiful waterfront in downtown Hampton, making their way through historic neighborhoods, and finishing at the Hampton Roads Convention Center where they are greeted with unique keepsakes and a post-race Craft Brew Festival. In its second year having the 5k and Half Marathon on different days, the Shell Yeah!

44

Challenge will again present determined runners with the opportunity to run the 5k on Saturday, followed by the Half Marathon on Sunday. Boo Williams Sportsplex is pleased to welcome the AAU Junior Olympic Games in 2015. From July 31-August 3, approximately 15,000 athletes, ages 7-17, from across the country will compete in over 20 sporting events throughout the region. Hampton is scheduled to feature gymnastics, jump rope, and cheerleading competitions. Many nationally-known athletes were born, raised, and educated in Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson and York County. Sports fans will also enjoy visiting the Athletic Hall of Fame of the Lower Virginia Peninsula located at the Boo Williams Sportsplex. Established in 1971, the free display recognizes the competitive achievements of athletic notables who have brought honor and recognition to themselves and to this region. Hampton venues and events support athletes of all capabilities and fitness levels, even if spectating is more your speed! Spend the day on the water enjoying boating, fishing, or bay play; finish your day at a Peninsula Pilots baseball game or enjoying the thrill of NASCAR racing at Langley Speedway. Walk or bike the scenic trails at Grandview Nature Preserve and Sandy Bottom Nature Park. Or catch the Hampton University Pirates in action during a NCAA Division 1 football game. For information on specific events in Hampton, please see our 2015 Calendar of Events on pages 36-40.
