100TH ANNIVERSARY of NASA Langley Research Center
I
n the summer of 1917, a cluster of buildings were taking shape on a 1650-acre plot of land in Elizabeth City County, that is today the City of Hampton. These were the first laboratories of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics’ (NACA) Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory, a facility that brought world-class engineers to Hampton to “solve the fundamental problems of flight.” Langley researchers developed the modern airplane wing shapes, and during World War II, tested warplanes in the nation’s first wind tunnel for full-size aircraft – leading to advancements that helped win the war. After NACA became the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Langley’s Space Task Group made Hampton the birthplace of the U.S. space program. Here, engineers tackled challenges of spaceflight: training astronauts, managing Project Mercury, and assuming major roles in the Gemini and Apollo programs. Astronauts, including Neil Armstrong, learned to land and walk on the moon using a NASA Langley structure now used to test next-generation spacecraft. NASA Langley is also the home of the Viking project, an initiative that put the first U.S. spacecraft on Mars in 1976. While many Langley researchers have focused on aerospace advancements, others have looked
to better understand the atmosphere and air quality, using satellites and airplanes to monitor climate. Langley engineers and scientists are now working on the innovations of the next hundred years – greener, faster, quieter, safer planes, new Earth-observing systems and rockets that will take humans farther than they have ever gone before. Learn more about NASA Langley Research Center’s official visitor center, The Virginia Air & Space Center, on page 13.

JANUARY 21 When the Computer Wore a Skirt: NASA’s Human Computers
In the 1940’s Langley began recruiting African-American women as human computers, but due to segregation laws these “West Area Computers” were kept separate from their white counterparts. This began to change in the 1950s as NACA and later NASA integrated and the women who were “human computers” began to extend out into the broader scientific community at NASA. This exhibit features three of these pioneers: Dorothy Vaughan, Katherine Johnson, and Hampton native-Mary Jackson. Hampton History Museum. $5 museum admission.
MARCH 10 History of NASA
The museum will open a new exhibit celebrating NACA and NASA’s singular history and immeasurable contribution to the community. This will be the first step in a comprehensive retelling of Hampton’s twentieth century history. July 9, 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the 1917 groundbreaking for construction of the National Advisory Commission on Aeronautics’ (NACA) Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory— now NASA Langley Research Center. Phoebus
oted for its charming architecture, adventurous culinary establishments and antiquing bargains, Phoebus began as a village named Mill Creek after the body of water that separated the community from Fort Monroe. Because of its location, the waterfront community played a pivotal role during the early years that defined America. Phoebus has been neighbor to strategically-positioned military encampments guarding the lower Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads since 1609. During the Revolutionary War, area settlements were burned by invading British troops. During the Civil War, residents were situated between the Union-held Fort Monroe and Confederate forces. Enslaved people sought and found freedom at Fort Monroe, and encampments of refugees and Union forces resulted, known as Slabtown and Camp Hamilton, respectively. After the Civil War, the village became home to former Union soldiers, freed men and women, and local watermen, and a thriving community developed. In 1900, the village was incorporated as a town and named after its most prominent citizen and entrepreneur, Harrison Phoebus. English colonists fmauthority.com/casemate explored and named the site in April 1607 prior to the founding of Jamestown. In August 1619, the first documented Africans in Virginia arrived at Old Point Comfort aboard the White Lion, an English privateer based in the Netherlands. Colonial officials traded food for these “20 and odd” Africans, who had been captured from a Portuguese slave ship. This is the first recorded history of the trade of Africans in English North America. A series of fortifications occupied the site between 1609 and 1749, but none would be permanent until construction began on Fort Monroe in 1819. The Old Point Comfort Lighthouse was the only substantial structure on the site during the War of 1812. The lack of coastal defenses here and throughout the nation prompted the young U.S. government to build an interconnected system of forts after the war. Living-History Museums Chronicle Nation’s Beginnings A hands-on history experience awaits visitors at two Williamsburg area museums that explore the nation’s beginnings. At Jamestown Settlement, gallery exhibits chronicle 1600s Virginia in the context of its Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures, complementing historical interpretation at outdoor recreations of a Powhatan Indian village, the three ships that brought America’s first permanent English colonists in 1607, and colonial fort. The story of the American Revolution, from the beginnings of colonial unrest to the formation of the new nation, unfolds at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown through indoor exhibits and outdoor re-creations of a Continental Army encampment and Revolution-period farm. The museums are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Christmas and New Year’s days. For more information call (888) 593-4682 or visit www.historyisfun.org.

Fun Fact Outdoor recreation opportunities abound in Hampton! Whether its kayaking, fishing, canoeing, paddle boarding, sailing or motor boating, there is plenty of water access available throughout the city. Enjoy one of our many outdoor parks, including Grandview, Sandy Bottom, and Big Bethel. Beach lovers can relax along the gentle surf of the Chesapeake Bay at Buckroe Beach, Outlook Beach, and Paradise Ocean Club. Buckroe Beach offers picnic shelters, a stage, and even a fishing pier, while Paradise Ocean Club offers a more “beach club” experience with live music, special events, and several outdoor bars. Interested in a more secluded beach experience? Try Grandview Nature Preserve, a 578-acre estuary.
