Letter from the Editor

If I described my perfect vacation it would include tons of relaxation, opportunities for adventure, tranquil water, the beauty of nature and, of course, history (I’m something of a history nerd). Our very own Lake Anna has all of that! Situated in the heart of Virginia, Lake Anna has something for everyone—quaint towns, lush landscapes and nearby excitement (some of Virginia’s largest cities and attractions are just a short drive away). Not to mention, Lake Anna is a hub for water sports enthusiasts. Plus, located in the heart of Virginia’s wine country, you can go on your own tasting tour to some of the best wineries in the commonwealth. Lake Anna has been growing in popularity with second homeowners and families looking for a fun summer rental. However, if you need a weekend getaway, leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life to enjoy some lake leisure. Our guide is here to help you plan your perfect Lake Anna vacation. In this issue of Lake Anna Guide, we explore each of the four seasons in Lake Anna. The lake offers tons of summer fun, but why not come during the off-season? The beautiful vistas, exciting attractions and small-town charm can be enjoyed no matter what time of year it is. Planning a wedding? Lake Anna is becoming a destination wedding hotspot. With inexpensive locales and its proximity to Virginia’s biggest cities, you’ll find everything you need. You may even save some moola in the process. If you’re not sure what there is to do at the lake—never fear, the Lake Anna Guide is here!

PHOTO PROVIDED BY: DAVID UHRIN

Learn about the different watersports that are available at the Lake and the watercrafts that will get you out there to enjoy them. There’s also a list of the most exciting attractions in the region. Learn about the towns, cities and counties that are just a short drive away. Check out our Sips and Trips feature to plan your visit to the local wineries, breweries and distilleries found in and around Lake Anna. Before visiting, read our Datebook to experience exciting events and activities from live music to festivals. We also feature amazing local restaurants so you can get the best eats around. Life moves fast. Slow things down for a while at Lake Anna.

What Makes Lake Anna a Great Second Home? Greg Isaac Sunset Team of Lake Homes Realty

isitors have been making their second home in Lake Anna for years. But what about Lake Anna makes it the place to call home? We spoke with local realtors about why they believe Lake Anna is the perfect place to put down roots. Greg Isaac, Ron Gentry and Kathy Gardner and Mitch Shumate touched on proximity to larger cities allowing for peaceful getaways to Lake Anna, our hiking trails and of course the lake—the ultimate destination for any lovers of water, from fisherman to boaters and adventure seekers. 26

Lake Anna is desirable as a vacation home location due to its close proximity to D.C./Northern Virginia, Richmond and Charlottesville. All three of these areas are located within an hour and half of Lake Anna. Being located within 90 minutes of D.C. allows for quick getaways from the city. There are two main routes in getting out of the city—either via I-95 South or I-66 to Route 29 make for a scenic route to the lake. Lake Anna is the second largest lake located within the borders of Virginia and is attractive to boaters and fisherman alike due to its natural beauty. The lake has maintained much of its rural setting primarily because of the regulations on development and large pieces of land that are owned by the state and Dominion Power. The Lake Anna State Park has several hiking trails throughout its property, which preserves several miles of untouched shoreline. These factors allow the lake to not be overcrowded and very peaceful during the week even in prime vacation times during the summer. Adding to the desirability of this area is the fact that prices of real estate have remained relatively low. You can still find water accessible homes listed under $200,000 and waterfront homes for $400,000 and up. Water access allows you to access a common area within your community and sometimes includes a boat slip. The pricing on waterfront property allows an affordable waterfront option without having to make a long drive south to the beach.

Ron Gentry and Kathy Gardner Dockside Realty Lake Anna is a great place to own a second home. It is centrally located, about an hour and a half southwest of D.C. and about an hour from Richmond and Charlottesville— close enough to come for a weekend or for a longer family vacation. It has become a popular destination for people up and down the East Coast.

Spring is when Lake Anna starts to come alive. Beautiful flower buds appear, painting the landscape with color. Start your visit at Lake Anna State Park. As you walk the trails, you’ll witness first hand life sprouting forth—green leaves reappearing and blossoms everywhere. Don’t want to walk? Visit a local stable and see the landscape atop a trail horse. Although it’s not quite warm enough for a dip, take a kayak or canoe out on the water. Visit Lake Anna’s many coves, and see the wildlife reawaken from their winter slumber. Or use the cool spring breezes to slide across the waters in a sailboat. Spring is also when the fishing starts gearing up. Avoid the summer crowds, and be one of the first anglers on the water. Each season is filled with local charm and fun festivals. Get a head start on your summer wardrobe at a local shops. You can also take your family to experience a small-town festival. Get into the spirit of Easter in Louisa County with their Easter Eggstravaganza. Summer

It’s getting hot outside. Time to dive into the many water excursions available at Lake Anna. There’s so much to do—waterskiing, tubing, wakeboarding, parasailing and more! This is Lake Anna’s peak season for a reason. Pack a picnic and head to the shore for swimming and beach volleyball. Fishing is at its height, the lake is bustling with life and energy—your family won’t want to leave the water. However, if you can tear the family away, the nearby counties offer tons of fun excursions. There are amusement parks, racetracks, community pools, tons of shopping, restaurants and historic sites. Fall

The weather is cooling down, fall is the time to get outdoors before the winter chill sets in. Why not plan a family camping trip? Without the scorching sun, your family will love hiking the trails surrounding Lake Anna. The trees become vibrant with color—the reds, yellows and oranges of a lovely fall landscape. Be sure to plan your visit around one of the local Fall Harvest Festivals, located in Mineral or Louisa County. There is so much rich history to experience in the regions around Lake Anna. Some of the most important battles of the Civil War happened just a short distance away. Fall is a great time to tour these important, historic 32

locations, and learn about our nation’s history. Historic homes in the region are also open to tour. You could also visit the many antique stores in the region, and find a hidden treasure for your home. Fall is also the best time to experience Virginia’s wine country. The grape harvest begins in late summer and continues into the early fall. Some vineyards offer the opportunity to pick your own grapes. Yet, it’s the wine that’s the real draw. Take a tour of these amazing locations at the height of their beauty, with luscious grape bunches coloring the laden vineyards. Blaze your own tasting trail through wine country.

Life slows down around Lake Anna in the winter. Yet, that may present a certain appeal to some. If you’re looking for a weekend of pure relaxation, a winter getaway may be exactly what you need. Book a rental home or visit one of the local Bed and Breakfasts for beautiful environments at a fraction of the cost.

Christmas is celebrated with zeal in the quaint counties. See a small-town parade or get cocoa and crafts at the local Christmas fair. Lake Anna Fishing From March through the winter, Lake Anna offers fishing for every season BY: CHRIS CRAFT, CCBASSN GUIDE SERVICE

L

ake Anna is a 13,000-acre impoundment located in the counties of Louisa, Spotsylvania and Orange. Out of the 13,000 acres, only 9,600 are open to public use. The remaining 3,400 acres is used as cooling lagoons for the North Anna Nuclear Power Plant. Most anglers refer to the different sides as the “hot side” and the “cold side.” Although there are fishing opportunities on the hot side, you must have access to one of the private ramps located on that side. The cold side, however, has several public ramps that can be used 365 days per year. I personally use the ramp located at Anna Point Marina. There are several different species of fish that anglers can pursue on Lake Anna, with the top three being Largemouth Bass, Crappie and Striper. I guide for Largemouth Bass and Crappie mostly, but I do throw in some striper fishing when the timing is right.

LARGEMOUTH BASS The Largemouth Bass gets the most attention; many anglers visit Lake Anna in March and April looking for that bass of a lifetime. Lake Anna does not have a minimum size requirement to keep a bass; most anglers practice catch and release, as they are a popular tournament fish. If you do keep some, please remember that the creel limit is five per day, per angler. A trophy fish by Virginia guidelines is a fish that weighs 8 pounds and or measures 22 inches in length. The lake record was caught on March 20, 1985, and my personal best weighing in at 9 pounds, 1 ounce was caught on March 13, 2012. So, it can be said that the best time to catch a true giant largemouth from Lake Anna is during March. There are many ways to catch bass as they move from their winter hideouts. In early March when the water first starts to warm up, they will slowly start making a move to shallower water. Keep in mind that deep water nearby is a must. They will still be very lethargic, and you will almost have to hit them in the nose with your bait to entice a strike. My best overall bait this time of year is a suspending jerkbait. This bait fish imitator comes in a variety of sizes and colors. I try to keep in mind what they may be feeding on and match the color and size to that—it may be Threadfin Shad, Blueback Herring or even Crappie—and I have colors for all three of those to match the situation. As we move toward the end of the month and the water warms even more, the bass will become more aggressive. You can now fish your suspending jerkbaits much faster and even move on to other baits such as spinnerbaits, squarebill crankbaits and soft jerkbaits. As the full moon in April approaches, the bass start feeding heavy in preparation for the upcoming spawn. They will take a variety of baits and be very aggressive doing so. Being very aggressive does not make it easy by any means; you still have to be stealthy and accurate with your presentations. Now that they have moved onto the beds, they will be less likely to feed. The spawn usually lasts for about a month, and after it is over, the females will move out and recover for a few days. The males stay behind to guard the bed and eventually the fry. After about 3–5 days of recovery, the females will start to feed back up. This is a great time to put your top water lures to work. Large walking baits (Zara Spook, Paycheck Baits Repo Man and Damiki Rambler), poppers and buzzbaits are all great choices for this task, as they will all draw explosive and violent strikes.

Now we are moving into summer patterns. The fish will start to pull out of the shallows and move out with the increasing boat traffic and warmer water temperatures. Deeper brush piles, rock piles, boat docks and bridge pilings will all hold numbers of fish in the summertime. (Baits of choice include deep diving crankbaits, large Texas rigged worms, shaky head worms and jig and pig combos.) I have caught fish as deep as 35 feet, but most will stay in the 15’–25’ range. They will stay in these areas all summer long until the water temperature starts to drop back off in the fall—usually by mid-October they are shallow again, as this is the beginning of the fall feeding frenzy. Look for shad and blueback herring in the backs of creeks actively chasing bait balls all day long. Small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, hard jerkbaits and soft jerkbaits are all great bait fish imitators and will catch fish for you. As the winter months close in, those anglers brave enough to outlast the elements can be rewarded with giant bass and heavy bags to bring onto the scales. Vertical jigging is one of the best ways to catch them at this time of year. Learning your electronic devices is a must for this type of fishing.

CRAPPIE

The Black Crappie, also known as specks, freckles and silver perch, comes in a close second to the Largemouth Bass for Lake Anna anglers. These tasty panfish are hearty fighters and plentiful throughout Lake Anna—though up lake has better fishing than down lake. There are many trophy-sized crappie in Lake Anna, but they are the exception and not the rule. For a crappie to be considered a trophy in Virginia, they must be either 2 pounds or 15 inches. We weigh in several every year at Fish Tales, fishing and boating headquarters located in Mineral, for our customers. Though there is no minimum size on crappie in Lake Anna, there is a 25 fish per day, per angler creel limit. Personally, I try not to keep any fish less than 10 inches. Once March rolls around, the crappie start making their move toward the shallows; usually they are the first fish to spawn in the spring. They will start staging around spawning areas waiting on water temperatures to get right (60– 66 degrees). Although I have seen them spawn in temperatures as low as 56 degrees. The males are the first ones to pull up and start the spawning ritual; several males will pull into one area and do their dance to attract females. Their spawn is much different than a bass; it is not just one male and one female. As the spawn draws closer, the males will turn a dark black and purple hue; we call this “full tuxedo.” Sometimes they will be almost pitch black. 34

Crappies are very aggressive throughout the spawn and will take a variety of artificial baits and colors as well as minnows. Many anglers use small minnows rigged under a slip bobber to catch them; I, on the other hand, prefer to employ 2-inch curly tail grubs rigged on a one-sixteenth ounce jig head. If you find that you are catching numbers of smaller males, all you need to do is back off a little deeper for the females; the girls are not far behind. They spawn in many types of cover, such as willow grass, beaver huts, lay down trees, rocks and boat docks. I have even caught them spawning on sea walls and in water from just a foot to about six feet deep down. The spawn will usually last about six weeks, with the first three weeks being the best. The large mature fish will spawn first, followed by the smaller, immature fish. After the spawn is over in mid-May, they will start retreating back to deeper water for the summer months; I usually leave them alone for this period of time. You have to catch and go through lots of small fish, just to catch a few keepers. During summer, they’re in deep boat docks, deep bridge pilings, deep rock piles and some will just suspend over deep water. Did you notice the common denominator for the summertime? Deep! The most popular place to catch them during the summer is around the many bridge pilings throughout the lake. They

can be anywhere from 10 feet all the way down to 30 feet; a small minnow on a one-sixteenth or one-eighth-ounce jighead will produce the best results. The most important part of crappie fishing is the rod, reel and line. To thoroughly enjoy crappie fishing, a lite or ultra lite rod is a must. These fish are very hard fighters for pan fish; if you have too large of a rod, it is really no fun at all. A 6-pound test line is really about as heavy as you will want to use; I use a 4-pound test line about 90 percent of the time. The best part about crappie fishing is that these are great angling fish for kids—once you find them, the action can last for hours in just one spot! As summer ends and fall begins, they will start to follow bait balls into the creeks, and they will set up an ambush around the many boat docks. A little more skill is involved in fall crappie fishing; they will set up as far as they can under boat docks, and skipping or shooting your grub is a must. If the water level in the lake is down about a foot, it makes it much easier to get your bait to the fish. Small minnows will also work; just keep in mind that most of the fish are under the docks so you will have to be very patient and wait for them to come out to you. Fall is now over and wintertime is setting in; the water temperature is now in the low forties; and the fish have pulled out of the shallows. Some fish will relocate to deep brush piles and

The best part about crappie fishing is that these are great angling fish for kids— once you find them, the action can last for hours in just one spot! back to the bridge pilings, but most will just suspend over deep water and follow the bait balls around. However, I do fish for them at this time of year.

STRIPER

The striper fishing on Lake Anna has gotten better over the past several years and many more anglers are pursuing them. Though we do not see many trophy class fish caught, we do see many in the 10-pound plus range, but most are an average of five to seven pounds. For a landlocked, fresh water striper to be considered a trophy in Virginia, they have to be at least 20 pounds or 37 inches. In order to keep a striper on Lake Anna, the minimum length has to be 20 inches, and the creel limit is four per day, per angler. There are several ways to catch them, such as trolling, live bait, vertical jigging and casting artificial lures to them. Out of all these different ways, my favorite way is to cast to them, with vertical jigging coming in second. If you plan on using live bait, plan on getting out of bed very early and trying your luck at attracting bait to a light hung under a bridge and throwing a net on them. Storebought bait will work on occasion, but native bait— Gizzard Shad or Blue Back Herring—is by far the best. In March you can find me chasing striper up in the two river arms of the lake. They are usually feeding heavy on small black crappie at this time of year, so my bait of choice is a suspending jerkbait that I have painted especially for me in a color we call “tuxedo purple.” The only place you can buy one is at Fish Tales. As April rolls around, I have turned my attention to bass and crappie, but you can still catch striper. If you can locate the schools of fish up lake in shallow water, try casting a broken back redfin to them, and be sure to fish the bait all the way back to the boat. I have had several heart-stopping strikes only a couple of feet from the boat. Summertime striper fishing can be really great at first

light; the fish will be aggressively chasing bait in the midlake area until the sun gets high enough to penetrate the water. Once the sun is up and the feed is over, you can still catch them by using your electronics to locate the deep schools, vertical jigging blade bait, such as a Damiki Vault, or using a jigging spoon. Another popular way to catch summertime striper is by trolling artificial lures. Deep diving redfins with a bucktail trailer seem to be the most popular; although a deep diving crankbait designed for bass fishing works well, too. As we head into fall, the striper will begin to follow the bait movement up lake where you can use birds to give away the location of the schools. Once you have located the fish, be sure not to run your outboard into the school—this will shut them down. Instead, start casting a minimum of 100 yards from them while you move into position with your trolling motor. A 4-inch paddle tail swimbait rigged on a one-fourth-ounce jig head is my all-time favorite lure; the color depends on the mood of the fish. A sensitive rod is a must for this; most of the strikes will be very subtle and a too heavy of a rod will hide these strikes from you. You can chase striper like this all the way through the winter as well. Once the water temperatures drop below 40 degrees, the bite will be very slow; that is, if they are feeding at all. Another species to stretch your fishing line is the “wiper”, this fish is a hybrid between a Striped Bass and a White Bass. These hearty fish were stocked in Lake Anna three years ago, and are now being caught on a regular basis. They are strong and plentiful, but like the Striper they must be 20 inches long to keep. The daily creel limit is four per person per day, this is combined with the Striper. You cannot have four wiper and four striper in your possession. They can be caught on a variety of baits from top water to jigging spoons to swim baits. Look for them schooling just as you would striper.

In 1927, A. Smith Bowman purchased Sunset Hills Estate to house a dairy farm and granary. With the abundance of grain, Bowman decided to build and license the distillery in 1935. Due to the influx of real estate costs and taxes, Bowman’s sons moved the distillery 60 miles away to Spotsylvania County to carry on the tradition of their father. Using only the finest ingredients, A. Smith Bowman Distillery maintains their art in creating handcrafted spirits from tradition, innovation and creativity. Current master distiller Brian Prewitt leads the team with nearly 15 years of experience in brewing and distilling and continues to craft small batch, award-winning spirits that stay true to the Bowman tradition while also experimenting with new styles of spirits.

The owners at Adventure Brewing Co. have embarked on an adventure, indeed, with a goal of producing about 30,000 gallons of brews each year. Among those brews, four styles are offered year-round: Stiletto Stout, Backpack Wheat, Super Power Pale Ale and Expedition IPA. In addition, the brewers craft seasonal offerings as well as experimental, small batch brews. Depending on the time of year, you may get to sample their Go East Young Man Peanut Butter Banana Wheat, Scotch Ale, Pumpkin Patch Ale and so much more. Stop in for a tasting, flight or pint, or make it an outing and pair their brews with the delicious cuisine of the various food trucks that park outside.

Octagon derives its name from the symbolic centerpiece of this estate, the Great Room, which defines the mansion Jefferson created for Governor James Barbour. Coyote Hole Ciderworks makes delicious hard ciders using apples sourced from the finest orchards in Virginia. Some apples are grown onsite, but all are 100% Virginia apples. Their wide array of ciders are naturally gluten free. When you visit their tasting room you can sample both everyday ciders, like their Cardinal Red or Sixteen-Thirty with pear, and seasonal specialty ciders, like Holiday Spice or Blackberry Pear. Coyote Hole draws its name from Mineral’s mining past. The town contained small blast holes used in mining operations called Coyote Holes because of their resemblance to this creature’s den. The owners envisioned a recreation of the Garden of Eden in Virginia; thus, Eden Try is “a try at the Garden of Eden.” Masked by formal gardens and abundant natural beauty, the winery also boasts fountains and walking paths. The “Garden of Eden” theme also translates to the names of their wines: Serpentine Blanc, Eve’s Delight, Adam’s Rib, Fig Leaf Red and Forbidden touch on the traditional story. Other wines include a Rose Blend, Vidal Blanc, Paradise—a blend of Viognier, Chardonnay and Petit Manseng—Chambourcin and other delicious reds. Tastings and tours must be scheduled, as the winery is not open to the public.

Hartwood is an area known for its concentrated deer population. “Hart” is the old English word for deer, and according to local legend is the basis of the area’s name; and in turn the winery’s logo. Owner Jim Livingston started building Hartwood Winery while still an educator with Prince William County, Virginia. Jim has been involved with Virginia wine since 1975. He established, with the help of family and friends, the first Stafford County commercial vineyard in 1981 and farm winery in 1989. Jim’s wife Beverly joins him in making the winery what it is today. Hartwood Winery’s award-winning wines are clear evidence of potential embodied in Virginia wines during our rapidly maturing wine industry. Hartwood Winery continues to build on its solid foundation by providing excellent wines in a warm, friendly atmosphere for all to enjoy.

A trip to France in 1981 gave owner Bill Heidig the idea to start a vineyard. He noticed the conditions there were similar to his farmland. A few years later, after slowly adding new grapevines with his wife, Ann, Bill found himself supplying wineries with grapes that were then turned into award-winning wines. The family knew the time was right to open their own winery. They converted an old barn and have been selling their own wine for decades with his sons, Eric and Jeff, heading up the winery as Bill manages the vineyard.

Mike and Jeanette Evans show their ultimate respect for the land at their winery, a dream come true that started more than 20 years ago. Their log cabin was built with help from friends and family as part of an effort to create a Christmas tree farm, and they sought inspiration from earth-honoring Native Americans who originally named the area after four rivers, Mat, Ta, Po and Ni. Visitors can select a tree in season and enjoy unique wines year-round, including ones with Native American names: try the Wabamin (meaning white berry), a semi-dry wine, and the Miskwamin (meaning red berry), a full-bodied wine with the intense flavor of Blue Concord.

With all their ingredients, they attempt to source locally and organically. They also produce only unfiltered and unpasteurized ales. They brew their ales using an old-world brewing style. Traditional malts and American hops give their brews a distinct flavor. Their passion is to brew great beers using only the finest ingredients, and to create original craft recipes that highlight the ingredients’ distinctive qualities. Sassafras is the only vineyard and winery in Carolina County. Owners Ann and Gary Dudley named the winery after the lovely sassafras trees that grow on the property, which are also incorporated into the wood of their 950-square-foot tasting room. After launching its tasting room in late 2014, the winery has offered a vast range of varietals including Vidal Blanc, Cayuga White, Blackberry Wine, Chambourcin and so much more. Though the winery itself is young, their grapes have been growing for nearly 15 years. The family owned and operated winery is located just south of the Fredericksburg area and continues to bring fabulous wines to the area.

More than a brewery, Spencer Devon Brewing masters the art of craft beer and seasonal cuisine pairings. The casual, urban brewpub, which opened in April 2015, offers high ceilings, slate floors and of course, brews. While the tap list is constantly rotating to reflect the seasons, they’ve brewed a West Coast IPA, Brown Ale, Milk Stout, Pilsner, Pale Ale and Double IPA, just to name a few. You’re given the option to order tasting flights or even fill a growler if you discover your new favorite brew. Head brewer, John Ritenour has several years of brewing experience and moved to the area to kick start Spencer Devon Brewing.

The owners of Wilderness Run strive to produce wines that reflect true Virginian wine—wine that combats the combination of clay and slate soil and long growing seasons, which make every wine produced that much more of a victory. Currently, the winery is growing Malbec, Petit Verdot and Viognier. In the past, they’ve been successful with Nebbiolo, Barbera, Sangiovese and Chambourcin, and they will continue to foster growth of other varietals such as Viognier and Chardonnay, among many others. t’s summertime again! As you walk along the shore of Lake Anna from your vacation rental house, you may be wondering what more you and your family can do while at the Lake. You hear the tails of Largemouth bass slap against the water and smell the leftover smoke from last night’s campfire. You decided to leave your wakeboards, boats and other recreational water gear at your home, so you head to the local Wake Edger’s Gear and Gifts store to see what rentals are available. You listen in as the store clerk reveals that you can rent inflatable watercrafts by Aquaglide Water Parks. Aquaglide makes inflatables devices, such as the Jungle Joe Playground, which is similar to a playground, and the Aquaglide Rebound Bouncer, which is essentially a trampoline made for the water. Your ears are attentive, so are your eyes as they scan the store’s wide selection of wakeboards, boats and more. As much as the various watercrafts have impressed you, today you decide to rent the Aquaglide Jungle Joe for the afternoon. You can already visualize your friends and family gliding down the slide as you climb the inflatable pyramid. Before you check out at the counter, you can’t help but imagine the smooth waters rippling under your feet as you paddle leisurely through the lake. So, before you leave the shop, you decide to add a couple of Amundson stand up paddleboards and you look forward to a sunset ride. After you get back to the Lake and test out your gear, your day of water wandering is complete. When the next morning arrives, you walk outside to that familiar Lake Anna smell. The birds are chirping, and the sun glistens off the tranquil lake. As peaceful as your setting is, an unsatisfied itch for adventure guides your eyes to the exact spot on the lake where you saw a person soar closer to the sun as he catapulted off of a wake. You discover he was being tugged by one of Wake Edger’s Malibu recreational boats. A fresh desire for aquatic adventure dawns over you. Your renewed desire to try a new water sport is the perfect reason for

you and your family to revisit Wake Edger’s for some water sport lessons. After two hours of lessons, you’ve had a blast, and everyone has learned to wakeboard using the store’s wide selection of Ronix boards. After trying out wakeboarding and wakesurfing, your family members have learned that wakesurfing is much easier on the body. You also try the Short Bus wakeboard. While this watercraft allowed for a unique experience, you realize you need more practice to launch into the air. However, the folks at Wake Edger’s were too skilled and generous to leave you without the proper fundamentals. In fact, you become so trained by this time that you’re already tempted to ride in the nearest wakeboarding competitions. Since the folks at Wake Edger’s have been lakers for quite some time, you inquire about the different wakeboard boats and why Wake Edger’s uses and sells Malibu and Axis boats. You discover that these types of boats have wake-specific hulls that can be adjusted to allow for a clean wake, great for both beginners and professionals. In addition, you learn that Malibu and Axis boats are designed to focus on your safety. You become impressed that each are equipped with patented surf gates and gorilla fins, which keep the boat riding steadily and more accurate so that you’re not twisting while on your wakeboard. While at the local board shop you also learn that you can rent a pontoon boat and cruise to the local’s favorite spot, the Sand Bar. At the sand bar, you can take your boats out for the afternoon, and you might even meet new friends while on the Lake.

WATERSKIING Watch your skis seemingly consume water as it goes in and out of wakes. Waterskiing is a sport involving two—or one—skis where the rider glides on the water while being pulled by a boat. From cannonballs to chairs, these are a few of the positions you may find yourself in while enjoying this activity. Waterskiing is an activity driven by momentum; therefore, if you try to go over a wake slowly, look out for a sure fall.

WAKEBOARDING Exercise persistent balance as you take on artificial waves while your feet are bound to a board. Wakeboarding is a sport that involves a person being pulled by a boat while gliding through the water on a short, but wide board. The bad news is that when you can’t find balance, your board may slowly sink because you may have stood up too quickly. The good news is that when you do master your balance, you can perform tricks such as an airborne, 180-degree turn.

KNEEBOARDING Voyage the beautiful waters … while on your knees. Kneeboarding is yet another sport that involves a boat pulling the rider on a board; however, it is all while in a kneeling position. Expect to use your knees and a strong grip on your tow rope to guide your balance. Once you are on your board at a comfortable and proper kneeling posture, try some brave tricks like kneeboarding backwards or turning an entire 360 degrees while crossing over a wake.

TUBING Slide on the sea’s surface as you sit snugly on an inflatable tube. Water tubing is an activity that doesn’t require much skill. Rather, it involves an inflatable tube of various sizes that is then pulled by a boat. With tubing, the boat’s tow rope is tied to the inflatable tube. In contrast to other water sports, where the device is attached to the boat, there are no ropes for the rider to grip. Now that you’re hands free—though you may choose to hold on to the tube’s handles—the only things you are responsible for are wearing a life vest and having fun!

WINDSURFING Master the physics of the wind and your sail. Windsurfing is a sport involving a person riding the water with the help of strong winds pulling a board with a sail. Here, there is no boat pulling you; your only motor is Mother Nature. You literally will go where the wind takes you. However, once you master the skill and gain experience, you will find ways to control the influence of the wind’s momentum.

BAREFOOT SKIING Feel the water fill your feet and tickle your toes as you find yourself literally standing on deep waters. Barefoot skiing is a sport where a person is riding the water on bare feet while being pulled by a boat. Be sure to sit in your imaginary chair if you don’t want the friction of the water to rob you of your balance. When you find your balance, try some tricks like riding the water with one foot.

HYDROFOILING Fly above the water as your ski’s foil slices through the sea. Hydrofoiling is a sport that involves a person riding the water on a unique sit-down ski while being pulled by a boat. First, sit on your ski while using the wakes to your advantage. Then, create momentum through constant dipping of your ski’s foil into the wakes. Surf over wakes, or if you dip far enough, jump completely over wakes.

PARASAILING Breathe in the birds’ air as you sit and soar over the water. Parasailing is an activity where one glides through the air attached to a parachute while being pulled by a boat. Because of the harness and the boat crew’s constant control over the ride, there is no real skill necessary to enjoy this sport. All you need to do is bask in this beautiful view of the blue sky as it meets the blue sea for one leisurely ride.

KAYAKING & SUP Travel the calm waters and take in all the beauty around the shores of Lake Anna. Kayaking is a popular way to traverse the lake, but stand up paddleboarding (SUP) is a great way to get around while giving your body a full exercise. SUP is a sport where one stands on a surfboard-like board—sizes vary—then travels through the water using a paddle. No, this is not as dynamic as surfing Goliath waves. Instead, expect a smooth ride that is dictated by your form and physical energy. Everything from your forward movement to your turns is dependent on your knees, torso and the side from which you paddle.

rfers u S e Wak

Pontoon Re ntals & Wake Les sons

WAKESURFING Ride the waves without having to wait for nature’s winds. Wakesurfing is similar to wakeboarding. However, the tow rope, which the rider begins with, is eventually dropped. While the rope is present, it is only there to get you started; the rest of the ride continues from you shredding in and out the wakes. If you gain enough speed and momentum, enjoy a 360-degree turn or get some air through jumping the wake. LakeAnnaGuide.com

Keep Water Sports Safe and Fun for Everyone

W

e all look forward to those warm summer days when we can head to the lake, get our swimwear on and get on the water for some much-needed relaxation and fun. We are anxious to enjoy whatever it may be to make those long-lasting memories on the water. There are all types of boats and all types of water sports that us lakers like to do: fishing, jet skiing, paddle boarding, wake boarding, wake surfing, knee boarding, tubing, kayaking, swimming and just splashing around are a few of our favorite water sports. Everyone should be able to do the things that makes them love coming to Lake Anna. However, we all need to realize that we aren’t the only ones looking to enjoy the water. We need to have some respect and think of the safety of our fellow lakers. To our friends pulling a towable, wake boarding kneeboarding or wake surfing—do not just blow by that fisherman setting there. Instead, try idling by him and ask if he’s having any 54

luck. Don’t throw a wake at the paddle boarder or kayaker because it’s fun to see if they fall off or can handle the wake. To our fisherman and paddle boarder or kayaker, do not curse at the wake boarder or wake surfer who’s out there enjoying their day. Instead, meet them and ask how they do those tricks. To all of us out on the water, we need to have some consideration for the families on their dock, swimming in their common area or waterfront with their kids or grandkids trying to pass down family traditions and make their own lake life memory. There is more traffic on Lake Anna and our surrounding lakes then there has ever been, and we as a lake community need to come together and help one another for safety reasons and because it’s what you do as a laker. So, next time you’re on the water doing your favorite thing and you see a fellow laker, stop and get to know them. If they are doing something that is not safe or shows no etiquette, don’t assume they are rude, assume that they

don’t know the rules and boater etiquette and help them out politely. Point out what they are doing, such as being too close to docks or the shoreline; passing boaters; following too close to a person in tow; power turning after a rider falls; circling again and again in a small cove creating a rifle wave or taking blind turns at a fast speed. Ask them to take responsibility for their boat wake and watch out for the rest of their fellow lakers. We all want to enjoy the lake and we can! We just need to keep all these things in mind when we are out there enjoying our day and help others enjoy there’s as well. Have a safe and friendly boat season and see ya on the water!

Modern Lake Living

Lake Residents Are Upgrading Their Docks To Lavish Living Quarters by JEFF OWEN, OWNER OF JOCONTRACTORS

W

hen you’re living on the lake, the boundaries of your living space are no longer confined to your living room. From your dock to your boathouse, there are several ways to update and upgrade your serene oasis with upscale amenities. Over the years, docks and boat shelters have evolved from very simple and basic to much more modern and luxurious. The early versions of boat docks consisted of 2-by-6 treated wooden decking and sometimes a slip or two, with approximately half of those equipped with a covered slip. Back then, deluxe features may have included screened-in areas, a storage closet and a sun deck area—some were even built over the roof! However, very few of those were wired with electricity. While boating around the lake, one can observe a wide variety of contrasting styles, sizes, shapes and color schemes. You will see there are a few of those older boat docks remaining around the lake. While they are sometimes in close resemblance to today’s versions, the modern boat dock is much more than just a place to store your boat.

lake living|feature most popular allowable amenities include electrical lifts—for all the “toys”— surround sound, intercom systems, flat-screens TVs, custom seating and dining areas, accent lighting, spray mist systems and ample walk-in storage and organization areas. Remodeling and updating older boat dock and boathouse structures include replacing wood decking with composite decking; removing the screened-in areas, which usually become bars, storage or upgraded seating areas; and maintenance-free siding and cornice, all of which only need periodic cleaning.

Lake living has and is continuing to evolve. As one of my favorite passages go, “If you are lucky enough to live on the lake … you’re lucky enough!”

Jeff Owen, owner of JOContractors, has been building and remodeling on the lake since 1999. While most projects consist of homes, renovations and additions, he has also observed, built and renovated several docks, boat shelters and structures on the lake.

Today, lake owners request much more amenities when they start thinking about upgrading their boat docks and boathouses … some of which Dominion Power will not allow. Simply, Dominion Power doesn’t want folks living over the water in these structures. Some of their no-no’s include heating, air conditioning, plumbing, bathrooms and full kitchens, just to mention a few. Dominion Power also regulates the size and position of the structures based on their guidelines. Some of the more unusual requests I encounter include fire pits, fireplaces, dishwashers, heat pumps and custom-tiled showers—all of which are not allowed. The

The land in Lake Anna State Park used to be known as “Gold Hill” and contained the Goodwin Gold Mine. Gold was first discovered in 1829, then peaked in the 1880s. The Lake Anna State Park contains rental cabins, camping, more than 15 miles of hiking trails, lakeshore picnicking spots, a guarded swimming beach, food concession stand, a bathhouse and a fishing pond for children. The park is open daily, year-round. FAMILY FUN AHEAD

Live Music If you’re interested in live music, Celebrate Virginia After Hours, formerly known as Celebrate Virginia Live, is an outdoor concert hall at the Pancho Villa Pavilion in Fredericksburg. The venue hosts major music stars in a large outdoor space with various levels of seating and lawn space. Past performers have included Sheryl Crow, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Darius Rucker and more. Add live music to the mix, and make it free and open to the public, then there’s nothing better. The Lake Anna Sunset Concert Series brings the best local bands to the shores of Lake Anna, so guests can jam, eat, drink and be merry!

Historical Sites Lake Anna is steeped in Civil War and American history. The most notable historical events include the Battle of Chancellorsville in Spotsylvania, which resulted in more casualties than any other engagement ever fought on Virginia soil, including the wounding of General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. Chancellorsville was called General R.E. Lee’s greatest victory. Be sure to visit the site of the May 1864 Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. 45-minute guided walking tours are offered, featuring the “Bloody Angle” where the battle lasted two weeks and included bitter hand-to-hand combat between the soldiers. This was a continuation of the nearby Battle of the Wilderness. These are just two of the battlefield areas that are easily accessible in our area. With many notable figures who were born and lived in our area, there is an extensive list of further historic sites that could fill your entire vacation.

Whether you’re visiting Montpelier, touring a winery, picking your own berries, enjoying exquisite dining and lodging, hiking, kayaking or horseback riding, your visit to nearby Orange County is sure to be one to remember!

Counter Culture

In Culpeper The Shops Of Davis Street Davis Street is the center of what’s good, tasty and beautiful in Culpeper. One glance will hook you, and one stroll down the sidewalk ensures a return trip for more. A WALK THROUGH HISTORY Culpeper was established in 1759 and was known as Fairfax and Culpeper Court House before a new charter gave it the final name of Culpeper in December 1870. Culpeper has seen 18th century revolution with the Culpeper Minute Men, a gold rush and plenty of Civil War action with a railroad at stake. In fact, the town changed hands 78 times during the war. As you peruse the primary streets of the historic district, notice the large, Italianate building on the northwest corner of Davis and Main Streets. It was the boyhood home of A.P. Hill, the Confederate Army’s youngest Major General and battle-saver for Stonewall Jackson at Cedar Mountain. The opposite corner is home to Frost Café, the second lunch counter to occupy the space. The first was Gayheart Drug Store and Luncheonette, which operated from 1928 to 2002. The ceiling, floor, lunch counter and soda fountain are all original. Another Davis and Main anchor is Pepperberries, occupying two storefronts and calling all the ladies in to check out the pretties. Upon entering, just stand and look around for a moment. The space is so light and airy, but there’s plenty of sparkle and shine for the Southern girl in your life. While speaking of Pepperberries, you might be interested to know that a March 1888 fire destroyed three buildings in that same block. Only a month later the Town Council added to the building code, stating structures must have brick or stone exteriors and slate or metal roofs.

LET’S SHOP! Window shopping simply won’t do in Culpeper. The treasures hidden within deserve more than your peripheral acknowledgement. Take Harriet’s General, where you’ll find only American-made items and plenty of them. From old-school, cool stuff like Rosebud Salve and daisy dukes to soft cotton t-shirts and dainty jewelry, this is a great place to find a trendy gift or splurge on something for yourself. Primitive is the vibe at Latchkey Mercantile, where handmade-in-the-USA candles tempt the senses, and cute country phrases adorn wooden plaques. Chances are good that you’ll find owner, Brigitte, creating something beautiful – a wreath, perhaps – in the backroom when you visit. Say hello and ask her about her unique check-out counter. Down at Poppy + Chalk on the corner of Davis and S. East Streets, you’ll find fantastic vintage and reclaimed furniture and décor finished in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint or Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint. The space is generous and conducive to the fun painting workshops offered by the owner, Linda. Clarke Hardware occupied this portion of the 1900’s Culpeper Freemasons’ Fairfax Lodge No. 43 from 1980 to 2015. The Culpeper Freemasons date to 1794.

Vinosity is Culpeper’s go-to for learning what’s new in wine, craft beer and cigars. A carefully curated selection of vino from around the world is available to you, and a healthy portion of it is $15.99 or less. The craft beer movement in Virginia is booming, and Vinosity is the place to secure a new release and build your own six-pack. Other domestics and international brews are available as well. Toke a stogie once in a while? Vinosity has premium handmade imports to choose from. Speaking of imports, Taste is all about “fresh trumps everything” with vinegar, oil and spices from around the world. They have 40 “taps” for you to sample and taste for yourself. Once you make your selection, a bottle is filled from the very same tank to ensure that what you tasted is what you take home. Looking for something to spice up your décor? The Cameleer probably has just the thing within their collection of Aboriginal pieces, though if you’re seeking something Zimbabwean, you might find that there, too. The selection is ever evolving to introduce new products.

LOVING THE LOCAL All natural, authentic, organic … all of those adjectives apply to Moving Meadows Farm Bakery and the products they produce. From the fields come beef, pork, goat, turkey and chicken; all humanely and lovingly raised to ensure the very best quality meat and eggs make it to you. Additionally, the use of an Austrian stone flour mill to process wheat gives you the most nutritious bread available anywhere. The slow grind method the Austrian mill affords means the grains can be immediately worked into dough and baked. There is no waiting period for the grain to cool (like other mills), which means there’s no loss of nutrients from the grain. #Winning. While we’re talking good stuff, you have to check out Green Roost, a store dedicated to everything earth-friendly. EVERYTHING. You’ll find charity-driven products, recycled and upcycled items and items that are simply kind to the world we live in. Editorial and Images supplied by Town of Culpeper Tourism Office. INSPIRATION

FIND WHAT YOU SEEK From John Smith’s first exploration up the Rappahannock River in 1608 to artist Gari Melchers’ purchase of a peaceful country retreat in Falmouth in 1916, the Fredericksburg region has been a rewarding landing place for centuries of seekers. That tradition continues, and a new generation of offerings make this just the place to find yourself, whatever you seek.

KNOWLEDGE History has never been so alive as it is at Ferry Farm, where dedicated craftsmen are working to build a replica of the house where George Washington came of age. Across the Rappahannock River in Downtown Fredericksburg, the newly refurnished Kenmore mansion dazzles in the eighteenth-century grandeur in which Washington’s sister, Betty, and her husband, Fielding Lewis, furnished it, before the Revolutionary War turned their world

upside down. The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center tells the region’s story in a brand-new collection of exhibits in the oldest continuously used public building in the U.S.

THRILLS Clutching the wheel as you navigate one of the 12 turns in the 2-mile road course at Spotsylvania County’s Dominion Raceway, you won’t want for adrenaline. Adventure is not in short supply here. The Fredericksburg Skydiving Center at Shannon Airport can help you with the ultimate bucket-list item. Outfitters on the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers and Lake Anna can get you up on a stand-up paddleboard, cruising the rapids in a kayak or connecting with nature on a multi-day trip on the water. Explorers are welcome at Lake Anna State Park, Motts Run Reservoir, Government Island and a long list of other places.

Artists thrive here. That becomes evident on any visit to Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont in the historic village of Falmouth. Downtown’s Ponshop celebrates modern forms like skateboard art, graffiti and tattoo art, while Artful Dimensions celebrates everything three-dimensional. You could fill multiple days wandering through the many other galleries and studios artists have established in Downtown Fredericksburg. Riverside Center for the Performing Arts continues to up its game in bringing nationally recognized talent to an expanding repertoire that includes both the classics of musical theater and more modern dramatic favorites.

FLAVOR Every meal is an opportunity to explore the artistry of a Fredericksburg-area chef. Visit the new location of Foode to see how this celebrated restaurant has transformed a building that was once visited by Abraham Lincoln. Learn why travelers come from near and far to Spotsylvania’s Battlefield Country Market for fresh produce, artisan goods and delicious deli sandwiches. Try the new offerings chefs are bringing to the table this year at places like the vegetarian-focused Legume Kitchen and Bar and the authentically Italian Orofino, both in Downtown Fredericksburg. Pair your culinary discovery with a tour of the region’s growing cadre of craft brewers, vintners and distillers with a ticket to the Grapes and Grains Trail. Spotsylvania A Growing Community Alongside Beautiful Rural Landscapes

A

s you explore Spotsylvania, you can expect to find a diverse mix of rich history, outdoor recreation and one-of-a-kind activities surrounded by beautiful rural landscapes. Conveniently located directly off Interstate 95, Spotsylvania has become one of Virginia’s fastest growing communities and is home to multiple historic landmarks and Civil War battlefields. With all Spotsylvania has to offer, it won’t take long for everyone to notice—and feel—something that is simply unique.

66

Spotsylvania, also known as the “Crossroads of the Civil War,” is rich in historical resources. Several major battles were fought here including one of the top five most significant battles in the war—the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, fought from May 8–21 as part of General Ulysses S. Grant’s Overload Campaign. Being one of the bloodiest battles in the war, it caused more than 100,000 combined casualties. The battle included nearly 20 hours of brutal hand-to-hand combat over a section of the Confederate defenses, which eventually became known as the “Bloody Angle.” Today, this infamous site, along with other portions of the battlefield, are preserved as a part of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania Battlefields’ National Military Park, a unit of the National Park Service commemorating four major battles of the American Civil War. Witness scenic attractions, such as the Historic Courthouse and the Old Jail, or take a guided tour led by park historians through 25 different battle sites where historic battles were fought during armed conflicts that shaped the development of the United States. Stop by the Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center where General Robert E. Lee had his greatest victory throughout his entire career. Traverse the African American Heritage Trail, a trail dedicated to educating the public, inspiring local pride and promoting appreciation for the county’s African American contributions. The driving tour is 75 miles throughout 407 square miles of Spotsylvania’s lush countryside. Charlottesville A charming city full of history, rich culture and one-of-a-kind opportunities

N

estled at the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in picturesque Albemarle County, the fascinating city of Charlottesville is a lively university town with the quintessential mixture of the arts, education and culture offering visitors a thriving community that’s abundant in history. Our nation’s third president, Thomas Jefferson, inspired the architecture and name of many of the buildings found throughout Charlottesville, but his former home, Monticello, is one of the most iconic. Jefferson 70

began building Monticello when he was just 26 years old after inheriting land from his father. The plantation was originally used for the cultivation of tobacco and mixed crops, but like other planters, Jefferson started growing wheat in response to the changing markets. In addition to its gorgeous architecture and elaborate estate, Monticello was known for its elaborate gardens that were designed and tended by Jefferson himself. Every year he’d grow hundreds of fruit and vegetable varieties, and although his grape vines continuously failed to thrive, he developed the reputation as America’s first viticulturist.

After Jefferson passed away on July 4, 1826, his daughter, Martha, was forced to sell the estate, and by 1836, the first Jewish American Navy Officer, Uriah Levy, and his nephew, Jefferson Monroe Levy, bought the home. Today, the Levys are credited for its restoration and preservation. In 1923, nonprofit organization The Thomas Jefferson Foundation purchased the property, and it continues to operate as a museum and educational institution today. There are a plethora of ways to become acquainted with the town of Charlottesville, whether it be hopping on the free trolley

and cruising around Historic Downtown or attending an event at the local amphitheater that hosts a range of concerts and festivals. Discover historic buildings throughout the city that have become famous landmarks, including The Courthouse located in Historic Court Square. Operating as a courthouse for more than 200 years, this was the only courthouse used by three early American Presidents at the same time. There are numerous types of tours available in Charlottesville that provide an interesting way to learn more about the city—from private bus tours to wine and ghost walking tours. Historical tours follow the footprints of Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and James Madison. Ghost tours dare guests to trace the fatal steps of Charlottesville’s former mayor and his wife whose murder is still a mystery today. Choose from any of these, or one of the many other tours offered, and you will quickly discover all the treasures this town has to offer. Another celebrated aspect of Charlottesville is its surroundings. The city is located within Albemarle County which contains hundreds of beautiful hiking trails and paths as well as an entrance to the Appalachian Trail. If you feel like taking on a challenge, head over to Humpback Rock, a popular destination with breathtaking views overlooking the city. The blue-blazed trail

that leads to the rock may be short but wastes no time ascending! Take a leisurely, hour-long drive to the Shenandoah National Park in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains. The park is home to 500 miles of trails, cascading waterfalls in deep canyons and a variety of wildlife flourishing in the oak-hickory forests. Residents and visitors alike can’t help but love the 30 wineries, breweries and cideries in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Each offer quality libations with expansive views, as well as fascinating tours on craft production … and provide samples, too! Spend an afternoon at one of these popular imbibing destinations, or follow one of the wine trails that traverse the landscape. In the heart of the city, you will find one of the finest urban parks in the country, the Historic Downtown Mall. This brick-paved pedestrian mall is home to more than 120 shops, 30 restaurants and multiple music venues on and around old Main Street. Browse through a variety of unique boutiques, meander by the flowing fountains or simply relax under a stunning oak tree. Several museums and art galleries reside throughout Charlottesville, where you can learn about local and statewide history, view a diverse style of art, and experience hands-on exhibits

and displays that will attract all ages. Art lovers are also invited to attend the town’s First Fridays events, which are held on the first Friday of each month to browse through galleries and exhibits. If you are in town during an annual event, then you are in luck because Charlottesville always has something to celebrate! From showcase events at a local winery to the Christmas Parade during the first full weekend of December, you will easily find that Charlottesville is a vibrant community that draws thousands of visitors every year. It wouldn’t be a complete trip to Charlottesville if you didn’t visit one of the town’s biggest highlights, the University of Virginia, which is consistently ranked as one of the nation’s top public universities. Visitors are welcome to cheer on at a Hoos’ game, walk The Grounds or stroll through The Lawn surrounded by historic residences. To truly become a part of UVA’s youthful energy, make your way to The Corner, where you will find a wonderful selection of casual restaurants, trendy shops and local hangouts with college specials all day and night. The nightlife in Charlottesville will bring you an endless supply of live music and entertainment, from old school hits to modernday hip-hop. There are several restaurants, pubs and bars open until the wee hours of the morning offering drink specials, late night eats and entertainment that’s fit for any age. If you are having too much fun and prefer to stay overnight in the city, Charlottesville provides visitors with comfortable accommodations that will suit every need among their selection of cozy bed and breakfast inns to luxury hotels. Whether you are in town for the weekend or here for a day trip, the attractions, dining, shopping and breathtaking scenery offered in Charlottesville and Albemarle County is truly magical, and you will always have a reason to revisit. Madison County W

ith thousands of beautiful acres of land, scenic hiking trails, unique shops, restaurants,

several wineries and rich history, Madison County is truly a special place to—as the locals say—“ride, hike, taste, stay and shop.” Speaking of history, 2017 marks Madison’s 225th Birthday. Bald Top Brewing Co. (where history meets hops) opened in December and is Virginia’s first Historic Farm Brewery. Hebron Lutheran Church, the oldest operating Lutheran Church in continuous use in the United States, celebrates its 300th this year with a special service April 30.

72

The county is named after the Madison family that owned a large territory of land along the Rapidan River. One of the descendants from this family is none other than James Madison, one of our nation’s earliest presidents, whose estate, known as Montpelier, still resides in the neighboring Orange County. Along with President Madison, several other historical figures have spent time in Madison County, such as the Paleo-Indians, General Stonewall Jackson and the royal governor Alexander Spotswood. But that’s not all the history that occurred in the county. President Herbert Hoover once purchased land in the mountain area of Madison where he built his summer camp. The reason so many significant people have made their mark in Madison is because of its convenient location. Trails and roads are placed throughout the Piedmont area of the county leading up to the famous Blue Ridge Mountains, which led 18th and 19th century travelers to the Shenandoah Valley. At the time, this area was known as the breadbasket of the

Confederacy during the Civil War and was used as a back door for Confederate raids. Because so much history has taken place in Madison, there are plenty of destinations throughout the area that share, preserve and portray all that has occurred over the decades. Both walking and driving tours are offered in Madison, giving a special insight on the town and its place in history while strolling down Main Street or driving through the scenic Route 231. You will also find several historical buildings, many of which are found in Downtown, that you can journey through during a self-guided tour. Or take an afternoon to discover all there is to know about the history behind the Madison County Court House building. Located just a few miles from Madison County is The Graves Mill Historical Park, which offers a unique glimpse into the past, commemorating the significance and history of the Village of Graves Mill. The park is home to a stone memorial and bronze plaque honoring the 40 Virginian men who served during the

While in Madison County, there are plenty of outdoor activities to participate in while witnessing the breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains and foothills. From trout fishing and hunting to horseback riding and bird watching, you can always find something to do in the midst of beautiful scenery. Explore a few of the 33,000 acres of the Shenandoah National Park in Madison, where you’ll find popular hiking trails, such as Old Rag and the gorgeous White Oak Canyon Falls. Or explore the Blue Ridge Mountains by foot or car and you will quickly become accustomed to the gorgeous culture and atmosphere of Madison County. For an up close and personal look at the Blue Ridge Mountains, take a guided hiking adventure with a local expert who knows all the ins and outs of these breathtaking mountains. Fishing is a popular activity in Madison County due to its close proximity to multiple rivers and ponds. But that’s not the only outdoor activity that draws people to Madison. Take part in local traditions such as apple picking in the fall with over 27 different varieties of apples, or take a moonlight hayride. Bond with one another as you camp at the Shenandoah National Park, where there are four campgrounds open in the spring, summer and fall, all of which offer a relaxing and natural atmosphere.

BALD TOP BREWING CO. IN MADISON IS VIRGINIA’S FIRST HISTORIC FARM BREWERY.

A great way to experience the outdoors is by “tasting” it, too. There are four wineries located in Madison County that produce quality wines known both nationally and internationally. Madison is host to the one of the oldest and greatest, Prince Michel, DuCard, the first solar-powered winery in Virginia, and Early Mountain Vineyards, voted the #1 Tasting Room in America via USA Today, and one of the newest, Revalations opening in April. Each winery offers exclusive tours of their facilities and will certainly be a delightful experience all the way down to the last sip. For more delicious beverages and eats, stop by one of the local restaurants in the area for a fine dining experience or have a casual lunch at a local hang out spot offering tasty, fresh food that will satisfy everyone’s taste buds! The county is so dedicated to staying true to the mountains that they host the annual Taste of the Mountains Festival featuring history, artwork, music and good food every Saturday before Labor Day. Taste of the Mountains will be celebrating its 25th year on Sept. 2. After some delicious eats, be sure to browse the local shops where you will find handcrafted early American furniture and accessories for both indoor and outdoor living, yard and garden supplies, local goods, footwear, fashionable apparel and much more. If you are exhausted after a day of shopping, outdoor activities or simply exploring the county, there are plenty of ways to stay overnight in Madison. Whether you make yourself at home in a cozy cabin, treat yourself at a bed and breakfast or even step outside of your comfort zone in a Yurt for the night, you won’t be disappointed with your stay in Madison County. Lake Anna is a popular destination for relaxing, fishing, swimming, kayaking, water skiing, tubing, canoeing and just about any other water adventure you may want to experience. But the fun doesn’t stop there! You can enjoy quality time on the water and participate in the area’s vast activities, special events, local attractions and dining venues. Just a short drive from Lake Anna, you will find our highly touted Arts Center, historical attractions, wineries, golf courses and so much more! The Louisa Arts Center is the epicenter of performance, visual, musical and cultural arts in Louisa. If you are seeking a performing arts venue, a place to enjoy artwork in a gallery setting or participate in a painting class over a glass of wine with friend…this is the place for you! Did you know one hundred and fifty years ago, the Battle of Trevilian Station in Louisa was the largest all-cavalry battle during the Civil War? In 2014, the town re-created this dramatic battle by bringing back hundreds of cavalry horses, mounted re-enactors, Infantry (foot soldiers), sutlers and townspeople, all of whom were represented during this exciting, interactive weekend. Adults enjoyed living history talks, tours, entertainment and demonstrations. History came alive as children of all ages interacted with Civil War-era characters and

artisans, tasted campfire living, experienced family-friendly battles and learned period dancing and games. If you can’t be here in 2019 for their next re-enactment, a visit to the local museum or historical buildings, which are open to the public, will give you a real glimpse into the history of our county. It’s also a great place to do some research on your own ancestry. For those with a taste for the outdoors, Louisa County offers a wide variety of recreational activities. There are several areas for fishing, hiking, tennis, golf and even horseback riding. We also have playgrounds for your little ones at Louisa Town Park, Buckner Bumpass Park, Rising Sun Community Center and the Betty Queen Center. The park at the Betty Queen Center on Industrial Drive is conveniently next to outdoor fitness equipment and a walking trail that cuts through the property. You will also find a 9-hole disc golf course located at the Betty Queen Center which is free and open to all ages. Swimming, anyone? A public pool is available at the Betty Queen complex, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The pool’s reasonable prices and daily entertainment for youth make it a great place to spend summer days when you can’t get on the lake. Our parks aren’t just for the little ones, we also have a dog park on New Bridge Road that is open to the public for our four-legged friends.

Summertime kicks off our outdoor entertainment with the Lake Anna Sunset and the “It’s Finally Friday” outdoor concert series. Come out and enjoy great music, good food and entertainment for the whole family. As the weather cools down, the Fall Harvest Festival in October is the place to experience the best of Louisa as Louisa County Parks, Recreation and Tourism partners with the Mineral Farmers Market to host over 80 local vendors at Walton Park for a day of shopping, music and fun for youth. If you have the courage, join us the last two weeks in October for a walk or run through our “Haunted Trail” at the Betty Queen Center. Lastly, we wrap up the familyfriendly year with some wonderful, hometown events like our Louisa Christmas Tree Lighting, Breakfast with Santa and the Louisa Christmas Festival and Parade in December. Whether it’s a performance at the Louisa Arts Center, an event at one of our wineries, a place to play golf or someplace to enjoy a great meal, you can find out where to go and what to do at VisitLouisa.com. VisitLouisa.com provides an ongoing, year-round events calendar. Each event offers a unique opportunity to connect with our small town charms that compel visitors to return to Louisa year after year. This season, unplug, reconnect and discover why Louisa County is where the city comes to play!

stablished in 1734, Orange County was named in honor of William, Prince of Orange. Here you can visit the estate of James Madison, father of the Constitution, along with awardwinning wineries, Civil War battlefields and much more. With sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Orange County offers fascinating historical sites and museums, picturesque vineyards, festivities and events throughout the year, cozy bed & breakfasts, inns and hotels, quaint shops and culinary experiences ranging from down-home cooking to fine dining. Of course, the beautifully restored Montpelier is a must-see attraction. It was the home of James Madison, the intellectual force behind the new republic, and Dolley, his vivacious and politically astute young wife—the woman who inspired the title “First Lady.” The estate’s gardens, old-growth Landmark Forest and walking trails are open to visitors year-round at no cost. Visitors will delight in the breathtaking view, described by Madison as “a squirrel’s jump from heaven.”

As many wine enthusiasts know, Orange County is also a premier East Coast wine tour destination. The area’s prestigious wineries include the world-famous Barboursville Vineyards, where your taste & tour comes complete with breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountain views. Orange County’s Civil War sites include Wilderness Battlefield. Delicious Dishes: Take it outside and work up an appetite. In a small saucepan, heat one tablespoon oil over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and cook until translucent (6 to 8 minutes). Add honey, hot sauce and chili powder, and simmer one additional minute. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice. Fire up the grill. Rub remaining oil on chicken breasts. Grill until well marked, about 7 minutes, then flip and grill until cooked through, about another 3 minutes. Transfer to a plate, coat with honey glaze, cover with foil and let stand five minutes, then serve.

Of course, many of these items are available throughout the summer, so be sure to check roadside stands, farmers markets and local grocery stores for the freshest, most flavorful finds. But no matter what time during the summer you come to Lake Anna for a visit, the following recipes are designed to fuel you back up after a full day of activities that come with lakeside living.

Preheat grill and lightly oil the grate. Spread 1 teaspoon butter on each ear of corn and sprinkle with garlic powder. Wrap corn in aluminum foil. Grill wrapped corn until hot, about 15 minutes, turning occasionally. Unwrap corn and grill until lightly brown, about another five minutes, again, turning occasionally. Let corn cool and cut kernel from the cob. Gently stir corn, black beans and cilantro together in a bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk olive oil, red wine vinegar, lime juice, garlic, sugar, cumin, chili powder, salt and pepper. Pour dressing over corn mixture and toss lightly.

Fresh Catch Recipe Looking for alternative ways to prepare your fresh catch from the lake? Here is an excellent option for the grill:

Steam-Grilled Fish One pound walleye or perch filets Cooking spray 2 teaspoons butter 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon fresh basil, minced 1 teaspoon lemonpepper seasoning ½ teaspoon garlic salt 2 cups fresh mushrooms, sliced

Generously coat an 18-inch square piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil with cooking spray. Place filets on foil, all other ingredients on top of the filets, ending with the mushrooms. Seal the foil tightly and grill over medium-hot heat for 5 to 7 minutes on each side or until fish flakes easily with a fork. Be careful when opening foil pouch as steam will escape and could burn you. For those rainy days where you just can’t get outside, we’ve got you covered:

Summer Squash Soup 6 cups chicken broth 3 cups water 6 ounces uncooked pasta (bow tie or elbow) 2 cups yellow squash, finely chopped 2 cups zucchini, finely chopped 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped 1 tablespoon basil, chopped ½ teaspoon thyme, chopped ½ teaspoon oregano, chopped ½ teaspoon ground pepper 1 tablespoon lemon juice ½ cup of grated cheese (such as parmesan) ¼ cup basil, thinly sliced

Bring broth and water to boil in large pot. Add pasta and boil until almost done (approximately 8 minutes). Reduce heat, add all other ingredients except cheese and basil and simmer another 4 minutes until pasta is done and squash is tender. Spoon into bowls, garnish with cheese and basil. Serve immediately.
