“That ’s not how they did it in my day.” “ You need to wear your mother’s dress.” “A true Southern wedding takes place in a church.” Unsolicited advice, while well-meaning, is often a part of planning a wedding. You’re bound to hear a lot of “tips” from the time you get engaged to the moment you walk down the aisle. From JOHANNA CALFEE, Managing Editor Aunt Sue at the family get-together to the ladies in the grocery store aisle who notice your ring, some of the advice is certainly worth listening to, while some of it can be filed away under, “Something Old.” So, how do you cut through the clutter of all that feedback to uncover what you really want and need to know? We believe the Central Virginia Bridal Guide can be a vital part of that discovery. Chalked full of checklists, tools and real-life advice to make your planning simpler, Central Virginia Bridal Guide has been guiding brides and grooms toward the day of their dreams for the past 17 years. In this issue, you will find: How to choose the size of your wedding party Indoor vs. Outdoor weddings—what to consider Checklists to make sure you have everything covered What to have on hand to avoid day-of disasters Apps to help you register, plan seating charts, write thank yous and more Professional insights on buying your first home Exceptional wedding professionals from around Central Virginia And much, MUCH more! In addition, Central Virginia Bridal Guide also hosts two of the area’s premier wedding events, including the Bride of the Year Luncheon each spring and the 18th Annual Bridal Showcase in the fall. Inside, read about our 2014-2015 Bride of the Year, Meghan Blanks Jester, then learn how you can qualify to be our next winner at our Bride of the Year Luncheon. When all that “advice” from the outside world seems overwhelming, we hope you find this magazine to be your centering point as you plan. Broken down into easy-to-access sections, we encourage you to take it along with you as you make plans for your Big Day. Hearing stories of how Central Virginia Bridal Guide has aided brides and grooms over the year is why we create this magazine. Happy planning and, as always, may your happily ever after come true! When Meghan Blanks heard about the 2014 Bride of the Year Luncheon, she was busy planning an April wedding at Forest’s The Trivium Estate. Upon realizing the annual event would be held at her venue, she purchased last-minute tickets hoping to get ideas for the big day. Meghan thought surely, with so many renowned vendors in one place, she would find inspiration by attending. But inspiration was not all she left with; she also took with her the sought-after title of Central Virginia’s 2014-2015 Bride of the Year. Recalling the time, “I told my then-fiancé, Scott, that I was planning on going to the event, and briefly mentioned that one bride-to-be would win a honeymoon,” Meghan said. A travel enthusiast, Scott immediately felt sure his bride would win. “I told him there would be so many girls at the luncheon, and that there was no way we’d get this one.” Before Meghan knew it, her name was called and she found herself standing in front of the crowd, excited and nervous, with no speech prepared.

knowing that just nine months later he would pop the question.
“As a teacher, I’m not afraid of public speaking, so that worked in my favor,” Meghan said. “I wasn’t sure what kind of questions to expect, but they were mostly about my relationship with Scott and our engagement … an easy and fun topic.” Meghan charmingly told the crowd of her history with Scott. Both Lynchburg natives and teachers at Brookville, their love story began while Meghan was still a student at Virginia Tech. “Scott was coaching basketball at Brookville High School, and my younger brother was on the team,” she explained. “Whenever I’d come home from Tech, I would see him at games.” During her senior year of college, Meghan agreed to go on a date with Scott, not
“It was a beautiful day in July when Scott told me he thought a picnic would be fun,” Meghan remembered. “My parents had a picnic basket, so we borrowed that and packed a lunch before heading to visit wineries along Route 151.” After a few wine tastings, the couple was ready for lunch. “We were at Veritas [Vineyards in Afton, VA], a beautiful winery, when Scott asked me to go inside and choose a bottle for our picnic,” she explained. “He told me he’d go to the car and grab our picnic basket while I got the wine.” When they met back outside, Meghan opened the picnic basket to find something she didn’t recall packing: a small black velvet box. She quickly put two and two together, as Scott got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife. After an enthusiastic “yes,” the pair began planning a wedding and a life together in Lynchburg. That was the story that won the hearts of judges and fellow brides-to-be at the Bride of the Year luncheon on February 1, 2014. Along with the title, Meghan won a prize package including a honeymoon trip from Travel Lovers, a styled bridal session and 16x20 canvas from K.D. Burke Photography, a hair and makeup package for the big day from Emily Garbee and several other items. The total package was valued at more than $2,500.

11 “I was very grateful for the prizes, especially the bridal photo session,” Meghan said. “My wedding photographer was from Georgia, so she wasn’t able to come up beforehand for a bridal shoot. With this session, I was able to have a canvas on display at the wedding.” Meghan described her April wedding as fairytale perfect. “At first, we were concerned about the weather but it was a beautiful 65 degrees.” The ceremony was held beside the pond, and the reception took place in the Trivium’s ballroom. The day was filled with laughter and lighthearted moments, one of which stands out as an amusing memory for Meghan. “Everyone who knows me will tell you that I’m not very graceful,” she admitted. “People know I fall all the time.” Sure enough, she took a minor tumble down The Trivium’s beautiful staircase before the ceremony. “It was actually really funny, and no one saw it happen except my dad,” she explained. “He was a little concerned, but the dress was fine and it took some of the weight off the moment.” Thankfully, Meghan maintained her footing for the rest of the evening and danced the night away with family and friends. With Scott and Meghan’s teaching schedules, they were unable to take their honeymoon immediately following the wedding, so the pair planned a late-summer road trip instead, which included driving up to Niagara Falls, time in Toronto. Like true sports lovers, they planned their trip home around a fun pit stop to a Pirates game in Pittsburgh. “Without the honeymoon prize from Travel Lovers, we probably would have put the trip off for a while,” Meghan said. “But it [is] awesome [that we got] to go this summer while we’re still newlyweds.” Looking back on the proposal, wedding planning and the big day, Meghan wouldn’t change a thing. “It could not have gone better,” she said. “Winning the Bride of the Year title was just icing on the cake.” THE BRIDE’S RESOURCE

OUTDOOR VS. INDOORS Considerations for planning that go beyond the weather
t
By James Ebrahim
HERE ARE JUST A FEW: OUTDOOR WEDDINGS An obvious advantage of an outdoor wedding is the beauty of natural light. Sunlight gives the photographer the opportunity to immortalize the day with light that is not replicable indoors. Another benefit to having the wedding outdoors is the beauty nature provides. This beauty needs less decoration than a church sanctuary, which in turn means a cheaper wedding. A disadvantage is the lack of control over weather. This could mean pop-up storms—thunderstorms that are difficult to predict, or blistering heat beating down on guests and family. Another drawback
VISIONS BY HEATHER
The choice between an indoor and an outdoor wedding often comes down to the personality of the bride and groom. While some prefer to commune with nature in the idyllic woods or with the sun glinting off the lake water, others prefer the timeless church bells ringing out at the conclusion of their happy nuptials. There are benefits and detriments to both indoor and outdoor weddings, of course.
CENTRAL VIRGINIA BRIDAL GUIDE
twenty-fourteen/fifteen
INDOOR WEDDINGS One of the strengths of an indoor wedding is that it will be easier to set up and tear down. There is no need to transport and set up chairs from another location. This can mean less stress and more time to focus on more important things. Another pro of indoor weddings is having the wedding and reception in the same location. Often churches or indoor ceremony sites have banquet or recreational rooms that could easily host a reception. A con of indoor weddings is that it is harder for the photographer. Indoor weddings typically have less light, which makes the photographer’s job more challenging. Also, spatial limitations leave the photographer with fewer angles then would be possible at an outdoor wedding. Another obstacle is the limitations of decorations. The adornments must be approved by the church or site and therefore it could limit the type and quantity of the decorations. The choice between indoor and outdoor is one in which there are a lot of considerations, but both can offer the bride and groom the opportunity for the wedding of their dreams. THE BRIDE’S RESOURCE

to an outdoor wedding is the distractions of the environment. Noise pollution from cars and lawnmowers could distract from the ceremony, as well as mosquito swarming around the guests. Dirt, mud or grass stains could also affect guests—and potentially the bride’s white dress—in the process of getting everyone to the venue.

DON’T BUY IT—RENT IT! Wedding day rentals may encompass more than you think By Lori Moye, C.E.R.P, Aztec Rental

Planning a wedding? There are many things you know you must buy, from the dress and flowers to the food, but do you know all the things you can rent? The most common reaction from brides visiting our showroom in Lynchburg for the first time is surprise at the variety of items available for rental. With a diverse inventory including everything from tents, tables and chairs to linens, china, flatware and more, there is something for all tastes and budgets.

At Aztec Rental, we are constantly adding to our inventory to keep up with the latest colors and style trends. For the last several years, rustic weddings have been very popular, utilizing items such as burlap linens, natural color palettes and more organic centerpieces. This look is still holding its own but many brides are now leaning toward a more vintage look with layered linens, lace overlays and mismatched glass centerpieces. The Pantone Color of the Year 2014, Radiant Orchid, has greatly influenced linen colors this year and we have seen all shades of purples and pinks gain popularity. Recently metallic colors, especially gold tones, have been reemerging, often coupled with more muted shades like blush pink and ivory. Tented weddings are also popular and are a staple of our business. Aztec offers a variety of tent styles to choose from. Couples may schedule a site visit and a staff member will meet them at their location to measure and visually check the area where they are considering placing the tent. This will ensure the tent size desired will fit in the area and will also address any other issue that may affect set up. Aztec can also advise couples on what size tent they will need to accommodate their expected guest count. Once brides- and grooms-to-be decide what they may be interested in renting, our Aztec party consultants can provide them with a customized quote and
check availability on those items for their particular date. To secure these items, the couple may then place a reservation. It is never too early to book reservations, especially if a wedding will occur during our busy season. Generally, this season runs from May to October, so the sooner a couple books, the more likely we are to have their first choices available. Placing a reservation is easy and only requires a 50 percent down payment. We typically recommend that brides reserve the maximum number they may need of an item. That amount may be reduced once the wedding date draws closer and RSVPs start coming in. There is no penalty to reduce, or even cancel, as long as couples do so at least one week prior to the date they will be picking up or taking delivery of these items. So, book early and ensure these items will be available in the amounts needed. Delivery is available, as is set-up and break down of most items. Renting is easy, affordable and very flexible. Whether a wedding event is indoors or out, large or intimate, many options are available. With social media sites such as Pinterest to inspire ideas, it can all get pretty overwhelming. What advice do we give all our clients? Whatever the latest trends and color crazes are, weddings are very personal events. We always encourage you to tailor your décor to express your own unique style. After all, it’s your special day!

WHICH WAY TO LOVE? Finding the right direction for your marriage
s
By Larry Compter, Executive Director, Compass Marriage & Relationship Services
Sometimes we speak as if love was a destination—a place we want to get to, or a situation or a state at which we want to arrive. We talk about “looking for love,” or “finding love,” “being in love,” or even “falling out of love.” This gives the impression that love is something external, something that happens to us. Certainly this is the implicit message in concepts like kismet, love at first sight or discovering a soul mate. Romantic notions like these can be fun, and make for interesting movies and television, but they can sometimes be a little misleading. The reality of love, especially healthy married love, is quite different. Just as life is essentially a series of decisions we make, each of which leads us to certain consequences, so love is more of a direction than a destination. It’s not just a feeling or an emotion. Everything we say or do to our partner is either more or less loving. It moves us in a direction that either takes us closer to him or her, increasing intimacy and improving the relationship, or it takes us farther away, decreasing the strength of our bond as a couple. Every loving thought, word or action is a step in the direction of love. Every harsh utterance or destructive behavior is a turn in the opposite direction. Researchers over the last 50 years have studied marriage and relationships quite intensively and have identified specific behaviors, attitudes and concepts which are conducive to a healthier and more satisfying relationship, and those which have the opposite effect. How a couple communicates, how they resolve conflict, how they solve problems and even how they play and make love has decisive consequences for their relationship.
So, how can a young engaged or married couple learn what works and what doesn’t? Practical, simple and effective methods can be learned in a relatively short time by most couples. But the best time to do that is before you get married! In a good premarital preparation program, you will learn (through an online assessment) what areas in your relationship are already strong, and which areas may need some work. Then, in consultation with a trained facilitator, you can learn the “real life” techniques and skills that will help you build a healthy, lifelong marriage. Developing positive relationship habits early on will also prepare you to face the inevitable challenges that will come your way. Premarital preparation is not counseling, it is training in how to love better. Start today to prepare not just for your wedding, but for your marriage. Get into a thorough premarital preparation program as soon as possible, and point yourself in the direction of better love! For more information, go to www.betterlove.org.

ANYTHING GOES! Feel free to mix and match any flowers together. There’s really no right and wrong anymore. Just pick your style and colors and go with it! Flowers are personal—so make them something you love.
MATCH YOUR PERSONALITY
KD BURKE PHOTOGRAPHY
One way to discover the perfect flowers for you is to think about colors and flowers that match your personality. If you’re very bubbly and outgoing, you may want to go with bright colors and fun, unique flowers. If your personality is mellow and easygoing, you might opt for more soft and classic colors.
CONSIDER THE MEANING Another fun way to pair flowers is with the message and meaning behind each one. Represent your perfect love (Tulip), dedication (Sunflower) and faithfulness (Chrysanthemum) with flowers that mean exactly those things. For a full list of flowers and their meanings, visit a site like www.FlowerExpert.com.

SPA PARTY! Pre-wedding pampering that’s worth the splurge
t
By Ashlyn Davidson
The stress of planning for your big day may be overwhelming. It’s important to not let the important elements of your appearance slip through the cracks. From manicures and pedicures to having the perfect-for-you make-up, spa trips have become an “I do” for all brides. Here are some treatments to consider as you prep for wearing white.
FACIAL. Not only are facials relaxing, they also pose other benefits. Some facials offer cleansing features that prevent acne, while others restore circulation allowing your skin to glow.
MANICURE/PEDICURE. What’s better than sitting back and relaxing your fingers and toes? A mani/ pedi combo is a must for your big day, and—bonus—it’s also relaxing. Invite your bridesmaids for a fun mini spa day. Plan it within a week of your wedding so your nails are in tiptop shape for your walk down the aisle.
WAXING. Don’t stress with the tweezers! Several days before the wedding, get your eyebrows shaped up. Every little bit helps to make you shine!
MASSAGE. As your to-do list piles up,

schedule a massage to unwind. There are many different types of massages, all posing health benefits. Massages have been proven to be helpful with anxiety, headaches and much more. Just be sure to leave several days in between your last massage and your

MAKE-UP. Even though doing your own make-up may seem simple, treating yourself to a make-up artist on your wedding day will ensure that you look as beautiful as you hope in your photos. Make-up artists know exactly what make-up to use to enhance your most beautiful features on camera and in person.
AT-HOME SPA OPTION. Although a full-blown spa experience would be great, your budget may not support a day at the spa. Don’t worry! If you are looking to save on treatments, do an at-home spa party with your bridesmaids. Check Pinterest for great DIY facemasks, make-up ideas and more.

STRIKE A POSE Tips from local photographers on how to look naturally beautiful in photos
STONE BLUE PRODUCTIONS
“My advice for brides would be this: Come prepared. Whether it’s a bridal shoot or the wedding day, get your makeup and hair done either by a friend or a professional. I’ve had brides come to me afterwards upset that they don’t look like what they envisioned; unfortunately, there’s not much I can do about that. I suggest you relax, be pampered and allow yourself enough time to look your best on your big day!” —Jeremiah Guelzo, Stone Blue Productions
WILLIAM BRUNETTE PHOTOGRAPHY
“Work with your photographer before the wedding. I believe this is one of the most beneficial things a couple can do to feel relaxed in front of the camera. Not only do you build chemistry with your photographer, but you also gain confidence in yourself as a model when you see how great your bridal and engagement photos turn out.” —William Burnette, William Burnette Photography
VISIONS BY HEATHER
“Happiness and beauty are captured with the lens when it shines genuinely from within. Wedding days are naturally one of the happiest days of your life, so capturing those moments requires a keen eye from your photographer for watching those moments unfold. The responsibility lies more in his or her hands to see those moments happen and to be there to candidly capture them. Only then are the most genuine moments saved to remember for a lifetime.” —Heather Cheatham, Visions by Heather CENTRAL VIRGINIA BRIDAL GUIDE
twenty-fourteen/fifteen
“Make-up! Brides, please do not do your makeup yourself, pay to get a pro to do it. I see too many brides who do their own make-up and it comes off half way through the wedding.” —Kimberly Burke, KD Burke Photography
SAM STROUD PHOTOGRAPHY
“It can be an incredibly stressful and an awkward thing to have a random guy sticking a lens in your face, telling you what to do. The best way to look natural and feel the most comfortable in front of the lens is to get to know your photographer. We spend and take the time to get to know our brides and establish a relationship with them beforehand and it always pays off in helping them to relax. Keep it light, let your photographer show you what to do and have fun!” —Sam Stroud, Sam Stroud Photography

MASON JAR MAGIC By Ashlyn Davidson
i
If you have been spent any amount of time on the Internet looking for decoration ideas, chances are you have stumbled across the magic of mason jars for weddings. Who knew such a small jar presented so many opportunities to make an event beautiful? Mason jars can be utilized for anything from serving delicious desserts to aisle decorations and much more. Check out these easy and affordable ways to transform regular old jars into mason magic. Â
FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS If you are aiming for a rustic look for your wedding, utilizing mason jars to hold flower arrangements may be the way to go.
DRINK GLASSES Use chalk paint to create labels on mason jars so guests can write their name on their glass to have throughout the reception.
DESSERT Make dessert easy to serve and appealing to the eye by jarring them up. Parfaits, layered cake, cheesecake and fruit are a few options to consider.
AISLE PLANTERS A shepherd’s hook, ribbon and flowers are the few things you need to have subtle, yet beautiful aisle decorations.
PARTY FAVORS Personalize mason jars with your wedding date and new last name for a memorable and cute drinking glass for your guests to take home.

REHEARSAL DINNER: CATERING IT VS. DINING OUT By James Ebrahim
Restaurant and catering services offer unique opportunities for a wedding rehearsal dinner, both with their benefits and drawbacks. Here are some to consider when planning.
RESTAURANT:
CATERED:
PRO #1: CHEAPER
PRO #1: PORTABILITY
A restaurant will usually cost less than a catering service, which means you may save money or get higher-quality entrĂŠes for the same price.
A catered dinner can be held wherever the bride and groom choose, as opposed to a restaurant.
CON #1: OTHER GUESTS
Since the dishes must be transported from another location, they may not be as fresh as those served in a restaurant.
PRO #2: BANQUET ROOMS Many restaurants have banquet rooms that could be the perfect place for a rehearsal dinner, away from other restaurant guests.
CON #2: BUSY SERVERS Servers at a restaurant may have other tables at the same time as the wedding party, which gives them less of a chance to give you great service.
If seating at a restaurant can’t be reserved, then there could be a wait at the door. There is typically no wait for a catered dinner.
CON #2: AMBIANCE The ambiance of a catered dinner is limited to its setting, including decorations and lighting. Ambiance at a restaurant is free.
PRO #3: GUARANTEED FOOD
PRO #3: BIGGER MENU
With catering, there is no risk that they will be out of the Linguini with Clam Sauce.
Each guest can order a different dish, which is usually not an option in a catered dinner.
CON #3: DRINK OPTIONS
CON #3: MISTAKES A large party at a restaurant will be taxing on the wait staff, making entrees more susceptible to mistakes than a preordered catering dinner.
STONE BLUE PRODUCTIONS
PRO #2: NO WAITING
Along with a smaller menu comes a smaller selection of beverages. Restaurants can better satisfy the alcoholic and nonalcoholic preferences of the wedding party, friends and family.

In a restaurant, there is no way to control the behavior of other guests, which could be disruptive to the dinner.

SOCIALLY TRENDING IDEAS FOR YOUR BIG DAY By Ashlyn Davidson

CUSTOM INSTAGRAM HASHTAG As guests are entering your wedding, have a custom hashtag visible for them to use on Instagram. After your night is over, you can search the hashtag to see the fun everyone had. Use a fun hashtag phrase such as #marshallmadness2014 or #jonespartyof2.
A PHOTO A DAY Document all of your ‘firsts’ after your wedding day by taking a picture every day of the year. First meal together, first holiday and trips are a great place to start. If you two aren’t together one day, take a picture of your first Skype or FaceTime conversation. Be adventurous and creative in each picture you take so you have something to hold onto as you grow together. After your first year is up, get each picture printed on a magnet to place on the refrigerator as a reminder of how far you both have come as a couple.

Set out old, empty wine bottles at your wedding, each labeled with an anniversary year. You create your first five anniversaries or skip around until your 50th year together! Have small pieces of paper and pens available for guests to write their advice for you both during each anniversary milestone. The only catch is you cannot open the wine bottle and look at the advice until the date on the jar! Consider posting your favorite advice on Facebook for other couples to enjoy as the anniversaries roll around. This is an easy and fun way to remember your wedding and its guests years after you’ve said your vows.

BIG OR SMALL?
y
How to choose your wedding party size By Ashlyn Davidson
VISIONS BY HEATHER
You’ve chosen the wedding date, and now it’s time to choose your wedding party. As exciting as this can be, you can’t choose everyone and between your siblings, cousins, high school friends and college roommates, some tough decisions have to be made. Do you want a large wedding party, or a smaller, intimate group of family and friends to be by your side during this exciting stage in your life? Here are some pros and cons of large and small wedding parties to take into consideration for your big day.
SMALL WEDDING PARTY
LARGE WEDDING PARTY
• More intimate, with the opportunity to bond with the group you select.
• More support for you and your spouse throughout the planning process.
• Wedding parties add up financially. A smaller wedding party will be more affordable. Fewer bouquets, boutonnières and ‘thank you’ gifts to purchase.
• You will have to take each member of your wedding party’s budget into consideration and understand that all of your friends may not be able to afford that beautiful, floor length bridesmaid dress you’ve been eyeing.
• “When choosing our bridal party, we kept it small and only asked family, plus one best friend. I know that I will look back on my pictures years from now and still have a strong relationship with those who stood by my side on our big day,” Karly Farmer, married September 8, 2013, said.
• “Having a large wedding party was great for us because it gave us a chance to experience all the wedding festivities with all the people who were closest to us,” Lauren Arthur, married June 21, 2014, said.
• Fewer people? Less drama. Putting conflicted personalities together may end up in unwanted arguments.
• Need a hand? A large wedding party makes for more assistance on that list of wedding errands that keep piling up!
• You don’t want your wedding party to be so small that close friends and family are offended that they were not included.
• Keeping track of everyone and coordinating events may be difficult with a large wedding party.

THE REST IS HISTORY… Nearby historic places to say “I Do”
i
By James Ebrahim
It is not hard for those in Lynchburg and the surrounding area to take advantage of the rich history of our region. Whether it is exploring the James River that winds through downtown or enjoying the Jeffersonian architecture of his retreat at Poplar Forest, there are many things to experience and remember.
SAM STROUD PHOTOGRAPHY
Weddings are no different, with many venues that retain the character and fortitude of years past. Here are a few historic places to say, “I do.”
THE TRIVIUM ESTATE AND CONFERENCE CENTER An antebellum home built in 1832 is the centerpiece of The Trivium Estate. It once served as the residence of influential nurse, Virginia Henderson. In recent years, the house has been renovated and redecorated with a more contemporary look. “We tried to keep as much of the historical architecture intact as possible,” owner Heidi Baker said. “We also added all the ceremony structures.” These structures include a gazebo, a pergola, an arbor and a 3,000-square-foot ballroom. According to Baker, the pergola is the most popular ceremony location. There is also a large pond on the property, where a gazebo ceremony location offers a breathtaking view. The 11-acre property also boasts a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
HISTORIC RIVERVIEW ON THE JAMES With the word “historic” in the title of the property, you can be sure that this venue offers everything needed for a momentous occasion. Located on the James River north of downtown Lynchburg, this venue is pastoral and rural, with all the conveniences of being located near the city. “Not only do we have history and the foothills of the Blue Ridge, you have the beauty of the James River,” Jane Proctor, site manager, said. “It is elegant and traditional and yet fun can be had there, which is a fantastic combination.” Both elegance and tradition can be found at the 1873 Riverview House. The Georgianstyle farm house holds up to 75 guests and offers views of the mountains and the water. Fun for wedding guests can also be had at the Fireplace and Grill, the 19th century Fox Den, and from the rolling lawn down to the James River. The most popular ceremony location at this venue is on the lawn overlooking the James.

WINRIDGE MANOR
TIMBERLAKE TAVERN
Winridge Manor is a Greek Revival home, built by Wallace Taylor in 1910. Taylor worked as an insurance salesman and was the founder of Piedmont automobiles. Janet Avance, the fifth owner of the home, completely renovated the house and property from 2007 to 2009. The venue specializes in outdoor weddings with a beautiful garden. Couples have also been married on the front porch and brick side stairs of the house. Getting married at the manor is an all-inclusive deal.
Timberlake Tavern, known to some as “Lynchburg’s Hidden Treasure,” was built in the late 1920s by developers Edley Craighill and Fred Showalter. It is located on a knoll above Timber Lake and affords a majestic view of the surrounding mountains. Timberlake United Methodist Church was born in the tavern and held their first service there in 1953. Sold in 2006, it was then turned into a bed and breakfast and a venue for special events. The tavern includes a dining room/ballroom with oak floors and ceiling and can hold up to 300 guests. There are two giant fireplaces in the tavern along with a wrap-around veranda. Services offered by the Timberlake Tavern include an Event Manager to help create your dream wedding.
“We have my preferred vendors, people who work for me and the weddings that I book. We include it all in one bill so it’s stress-free,” Avance said. “We do everything from the beginning to the end. This makes the day more enjoyable for everyone, and the bride still plans her day the way that she wants it.” This does not mean, however, that the couple can’t bring in their own vendor. They will be credited for it in the total bill. Winridge Manor was the host of My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding in October 2013.
Each of these venues offers the opportunity for a perfect wedding day. Taking advantage of the rich history of the surrounding area can make for a classic and unforgettable occasion—a place where your history as a married couple truly begins.

SOMETHING BORROWED is usually an item from a happily married couple in your life, whose good fortune is believed to carry over into your marriage. This could involve borrowing another bride’s veil or garter. Another fun way to carry out something borrowed is to use the same first dance song as a couple you admire. PERFECTLY PRESERVED Advice on preserving your cake top, dress and flowers
a
by Johanna Calfee
After the “I Dos” are said, the last song at the reception is played and the sparklers for your grand exit burn out, the rest of your life as a married couple is before you. But there are several elements of your wedding day that you will likely want to preserve—either for the first year or for decades to come. We have taken the guesswork out of a few of these with a quick list of best practices to perfectly preserve your cake topper, dress and flowers. CAKE TOPPER Many couples celebrate their first anniversary by taking their wedding cake topper out of the freezer to relive that first special bite at their wedding. To make this a reality, put plans in place ahead of your wedding day. Appoint a close friend or family member to save the top of the cake once the reception is over. Have them remove any delicate pieces, like icing flowers, then chill it thoroughly in the fridge or freezer before wrapping it in several layers of plastic wrap (this keeps it from sticking). Skip the aluminum foil unless it’s placed on top of the plastic wrap layers—using it alone can lead to freezer burn. Certain types of cake withstand the cold better than others. Ask your wedding cake professional for tips on choosing one that will freeze well if this is important to you. When it is time to thaw the cake, take it out of the freezer, completely unwrap it and then let it thaw on a plate for 24 hours. Or, skip the hassle and have your cake pro make you a duplicate topper or mini replica of your wedding cake when your anniversary rolls around.
WEDDING GOWN Your dress is full of memories and is typically a fairly large investment. Save it for the next generation by preserving it properly. It is best to start with a professional dry cleaning to get any wedding day stains out of the dress. Then, if you want to preserve the dress yourself, follow these six tips from WikiHow closely: www.wikihow.com/Preserve-and-Store-YourWedding-Gown. If doing it yourself seems
intimidating, hiring a professional may very well be worth the time saved on your part, and it will ensure that the preservation is done properly.
FLOWERS Hanging flowers to dry and pressing them into art are two of the simplest, most costeffective ways to preserve your flowers after your wedding day. Other options certainly exist, such as freeze drying, so talk with your florist well in advance of your wedding date about time and cost involved if you choose to go this route. Bouquets are an obvious choice for hang drying. To DIY it, simply bundle them together securely with string or a rubber band, and hang in a cool, dry place for two to three weeks until the moisture has completely left the blooms. If you have pets or kids around the house, hang the flowers in a place where they won’t be tampered with, like the inside of your closet. Once they are completely dry, carefully transfer them either to a vase for displaying or into a shoe box lined with tissue to store them. For simple, DIY ideas to press your flowers and create art out of them, head over Pinterest.com/VaBridalGuide/Bouquets and get inspired! However you choose to preserve the elements from your wedding day, remember that your memories are what truly last forever, so be in the moment on your wedding day and you will mentally preserve the love and happiness of the day!

TOTALLY TOASTABLE: Tips for giving a great toast By James Ebrahim
t
Toasts are an opportunity to hear from some of the most important people in the lives of the groom and bride. As one of those people, you are partly responsible for the wedding running smoothly. A good toast can help to keep the guests’ minds off of their grumbling stomachs, while a bad one could make them want to throw the food in your direction.

the toast along with anything else that might be offensive. With the wide variety of traditional and modern worldviews represented in the crowd, it is best to steer on the conservative side. It is the bride and groom’s day and not yours so consideration can go a long way in making their wedding perfect.
BE HUMOROUS
BE BRIEF
Humor is an easy way to ensure a great toast. While comedy does not come easily to everyone, you’re sure to have a funny story to relate about the bride or groom. Make sure the joke is something anyone can relate to—a toast is not the time for inside jokes.
There is really no reason for the toast to last longer than a couple of minutes. Longwinded speeches are not tolerable and can bore the guests and wedding party. Hit all the points in your outline and then wrap it up.

Tips from real life, local couples on preparing for your wedding and first year together
“I wish I would have known how hard it would be to plan a wedding from 700 miles away from my location. I assumed booking the venue, photographer and cake online would be simple. In the end, it all didn't really matter if it was what I dreamed of. I had to let it go and realize my real dream had come true. I learned not to sweat the small stuff. My first year of marriage didn’t come with too many surprises. After dating for several years and being together almost every day, I knew what to expect. I think the best decision we made pre-marriage was getting intense premarital counseling. I would highly suggest it to any engaged couple.” -Joy Johnson, Forest, married for 9 years

GROOMED FOR SUCCESS: Getting the husband-to-be involved By James Ebrahim
t
Typically, it is the bride who dreams of a wedding all of her life and does most of the work to make her dream wedding come true. This doesn’t mean that the groom can’t help out along the way. From a little to total participation, there is always a way to get the husband-to-be involved.
SAM STROUD PHOTOGRAPHY
MUSIC
INVITATIONS AND SEATING
One way the groom can be involved is to help pick the music that is played at the wedding and reception. Music that is special to both the groom and bride can make the ceremony more meaningful. If there will be a performer or DJ, let the groom help choose who it is and what they will play.
SUIT UP It is a big day for him, too! Let the groom pick out the suits or tuxedos that he and his groomsman will wear. This could mean taking him out to a local store to browse or surfing online. Whether it’s a two- or three-piece, single or double breasted, two or three button, the perfect suit is waiting for him.
When it comes to his side of the family, the groom’s input on who to invite and where to seat them is invaluable.

The groom will best know the nuances of his family and friends, who will get along and who might want a little distance between them.
The groom’s involvement in the planning can be as little as giving a second opinion when the bride can’t quite decide. This can be especially helpful in long-distance relationships, as the groom may not physically be there to help plan. You will be a team for the rest of your lives, so you might as well start now. A bride can always use help getting everything done for her wedding, and these simple tips can help keep the groom invested and the bride relaxed.

TAKE YOUR MARRIAGE TO THE BANK! Four steps to financial success after marriage
t
Now that you have found that special person to spend the rest of your life with, it’s time to figure out how you are going to pay the bills, prepare for emergencies, provide for your children and save for a college education, retirement and vacations. The list can go on and on. You can probably start to see why finances are one of the leading causes of divorce.
VISIONS BY HEATHER
By Doug Jones, Financial Designs, www.FinancialDesigns.com
I have been married for nine years and have two children, and I know first-hand the complications that financial decisions can have on a family. There are a few simple steps to take after you get married in order to make finances a part of marriage that will bring you together.
STEP #1: Decide who will take care of keeping track of all the checks and balances. It is important to know how much money is coming in and how much is going out, and who is keeping record of all of your expenses.
STEP #2: Establish a budget. Make it a priority to pay yourself first by transferring money into a savings account before money comes out of the account to pay your expenses. We are all creatures of habit,

MR. & MRS.
STEP #4: Find a trusted financial advisor. I would highly recommend finding an advisor not only to help you sort out the above items
and one way to have a successful and rewarding marriage is to get in the habit of saving. Not only do you need to be able to budget and save money you also have to think about protecting your family and retirement planning.
STEP #3: Investigate your benefits package at work. Your benefits package may include health insurance, long and short term disability, life insurance and retirement (401k, 403b, and pension) benefits. It is important to know what is best for your family when applying for these benefits at work.
but also to help you navigate wills and trusts, home, auto and liability insurance, mortgage payment options, disability insurance, investments, retirement planning and legacy planning. There are a lot of variables involved in saving, protecting and growing your family’s wealth. Most advisors will have a checklist for newlyweds that include everything you need to consider when starting your lives together. The decisions that need to be made can mount quickly and some things may be difficult to understand, which can make the decision making stressful and overwhelming. I strongly advise that you meet with a professional to help you plan for the rest of your life so that you can make your dreams a reality.

NAME CHANGE
w
What’s in your new last name may be less important to you right after the wedding than how to get it officially changed. The process is a bit lengthier than you might anticipate, but we are here to help. Here is how to get a jump on switching your maiden name to your married name once you have said “I Do.” MARRIAGE LICENSE This is the first piece to officially have your new name on it. Without this document, changing your name on other forms is more difficult. So get this one done and make sure it is correct!
DRIVER’S LICENSE This is your primary form of ID. Simply visit your DMV with your marriage license, old driver’s license and another form of identification in hand. While you’re there, you might as well change your car title and registration.
SOCIAL SECURITY CARD You can download a replacement application form from www. sscardapplication.com. Fill it out and mail it in to the supplied address or take it to your local Social Security office. Processing can only be done with your original documents in your old and new name.

IRS This changes automatically when you get a new Social Security card.
PASSPORT Visit www.travel.state.gov to download your Passport Amendment/Validation Application, Form DS-19. Fill it out and send it to your nearest passport agency (view the list of agency addresses on the same site). Also, send certified documentation of your name change and your current, valid passport. It will be amended and returned to you.
VOTER REGISTRATION Call your local registrar’s office and have them send or fax you a name change form. Ask what form of proof is needed (it varies from state to state).
BANK, EMPLOYMENT/PAYROLL, INSURANCE, HOSPITALS, CREDIT CARDS, POST OFFICE, ETC. Type up a letter with the proper information. (Old/new name, account number, social security number, etc.) and include a copy of your marriage certificate. All changes are free.

WEDDING PARTY ROLES Being the Best Man or the Maid of Honor is just that—an honor. Therefore, their duties go above and beyond those of the rest of the wedding party. But that doesn’t mean your bridesmaids and groomsmen get off scot-free. Here are some roles and responsibilities you can anticipate and assign to each person in your party for smooth sailing all the way down the aisle. MAID OR MATRON OF HONOR The maid or matron of honor is a person who the bride feels she can rely on to ensure that everything on her wedding day runs smoothly. The bulk of her responsibilities are centered around the celebrations: • Assists with stuffing invitations and putting favors together • Coordinates the bridesmaids to plan bridal showers and bachelorette party. • Helps the bride stay on time and focused the day of the wedding and accompanies her to all wedding day appointments. • Ready to run last minute errands or help with those final details to see that everything runs smoothly for the rehearsal, ceremony, and reception. • Responsible for the groom’s ring, bride’s bouquet, and fixing train and veil the day of the wedding. • Helps the flower girl find her place during the ceremony. • Assists with decorating and clean up. • Makes sure the gifts and bride’s belongings get to the proper place.
BRIDESMAIDS The bridesmaid’s most important role is to provide emotional support for the bride during the planning process and throughout the wedding. There are also pre-wedding tasks that are important to perform: • Assist with stuffing invitations and putting favors together. • Assist the Maid/Matron of Honor with showers and bachelorette party and keep track of the gifts received. • Makes sure the bride has her
honeymoon bag packed and everything she needs for the wedding day. • Keeps the party going at the reception. • Helps with decorating and clean up.
BEST MAN The best man is more than just a glorified groomsmen, he’s the groom’s right-hand man: • Serves as the groom’s personal assistant before and during the wedding. • Helps the groom choose formal wear and coordinate the other groomsmen’s rentals. • Organizes the bachelor party. • Holds the bride’s ring the day of the wedding. • Helps the ring bearer find his place during the ceremony. • Makes sure the marriage license and honorarium are delivered to the officiant. • Gives the first toast at the reception. • Decorates the getaway car. • Makes sure the groom’s honeymoon bag gets in the car. • Returns his tux.
GROOMSMEN • Assists the Best Man with the bachelor party. • Makes sure the groom has everything he needs for the ceremony and honeymoon. • Run any errands he may need. • Keeps the party going at the reception. • Helps decorate the getaway car. • Helps get the gifts to the proper place.

WEDDING PHOTOS Creating a “shot list” has little to do with adult beverages when it comes to your wedding. Arguably, one of the most important aspects of your big day is what will last after it is over—your vows, love, and hopefully, your photos! While more professional photographers understand what is essential to capture, here is a simple list to add to or subtract from. Give your personalized list to your photographer so he or she will know which moments you want to remember for a lifetime.
