meet MEGHAN BLANKS JESTER

When Meghan Blanks heard about the 2014 Bride of the Year Luncheon, she was busy planning an April wedding at Forest’s The Trivium Estate. Upon realizing the annual event would be held at her venue, she purchased last-minute tickets hoping to get ideas for the big day. Meghan thought surely, with so many renowned vendors in one place, she would find inspiration by attending. But inspiration was not all she left with; she also took with her the sought-after title of Central Virginia’s 2014-2015 Bride of the Year. Recalling the time, “I told my then-fiancé, Scott, that I was planning on going to the event, and briefly mentioned that one bride-to-be would win a honeymoon,” Meghan said. A travel enthusiast, Scott immediately felt sure his bride would win. “I told him there would be so many girls at the luncheon, and that there was no way we’d get this one.” Before Meghan knew it, her name was called and she found herself standing in front of the crowd, excited and nervous, with no speech prepared.

knowing that just nine months later he would pop the question.

“As a teacher, I’m not afraid of public speaking, so that worked in my favor,” Meghan said. “I wasn’t sure what kind of questions to expect, but they were mostly about my relationship with Scott and our engagement … an easy and fun topic.” Meghan charmingly told the crowd of her history with Scott. Both Lynchburg natives and teachers at Brookville, their love story began while Meghan was still a student at Virginia Tech. “Scott was coaching basketball at Brookville High School, and my younger brother was on the team,” she explained. “Whenever I’d come home from Tech, I would see him at games.” During her senior year of college, Meghan agreed to go on a date with Scott, not

“It was a beautiful day in July when Scott told me he thought a picnic would be fun,” Meghan remembered. “My parents had a picnic basket, so we borrowed that and packed a lunch before heading to visit wineries along Route 151.” After a few wine tastings, the couple was ready for lunch. “We were at Veritas [Vineyards in Afton, VA], a beautiful winery, when Scott asked me to go inside and choose a bottle for our picnic,” she explained. “He told me he’d go to the car and grab our picnic basket while I got the wine.” When they met back outside, Meghan opened the picnic basket to find something she didn’t recall packing: a small black velvet box. She quickly put two and two together, as Scott got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife. After an enthusiastic “yes,” the pair began planning a wedding and a life together in Lynchburg. That was the story that won the hearts of judges and fellow brides-to-be at the Bride of the Year luncheon on February 1, 2014. Along with the title, Meghan won a prize package including a honeymoon trip from Travel Lovers, a styled bridal session and 16x20 canvas from K.D. Burke Photography, a hair and makeup package for the big day from Emily Garbee and several other items. The total package was valued at more than $2,500.

11 “I was very grateful for the prizes, especially the bridal photo session,” Meghan said. “My wedding photographer was from Georgia, so she wasn’t able to come up beforehand for a bridal shoot. With this session, I was able to have a canvas on display at the wedding.” Meghan described her April wedding as fairytale perfect. “At first, we were concerned about the weather but it was a beautiful 65 degrees.” The ceremony was held beside the pond, and the reception took place in the Trivium’s ballroom. The day was filled with laughter and lighthearted moments, one of which stands out as an amusing memory for Meghan. “Everyone who knows me will tell you that I’m not very graceful,” she admitted. “People know I fall all the time.” Sure enough, she took a minor tumble down The Trivium’s beautiful staircase before the ceremony. “It was actually really funny, and no one saw it happen except my dad,” she explained. “He was a little concerned, but the dress was fine and it took some of the weight off the moment.” Thankfully, Meghan maintained her footing for the rest of the evening and danced the night away with family and friends. With Scott and Meghan’s teaching schedules, they were unable to take their honeymoon immediately following the wedding, so the pair planned a late-summer road trip instead, which included driving up to Niagara Falls, time in Toronto. Like true sports lovers, they planned their trip home around a fun pit stop to a Pirates game in Pittsburgh. “Without the honeymoon prize from Travel Lovers, we probably would have put the trip off for a while,” Meghan said. “But it [is] awesome [that we got] to go this summer while we’re still newlyweds.” Looking back on the proposal, wedding planning and the big day, Meghan wouldn’t change a thing. “It could not have gone better,” she said. “Winning the Bride of the Year title was just icing on the cake.” THE BRIDE’S RESOURCE

OUTDOOR VS. INDOORS Considerations for planning that go beyond the weather

HERE ARE JUST A FEW: OUTDOOR WEDDINGS An obvious advantage of an outdoor wedding is the beauty of natural light. Sunlight gives the photographer the opportunity to immortalize the day with light that is not replicable indoors. Another benefit to having the wedding outdoors is the beauty nature provides. This beauty needs less decoration than a church sanctuary, which in turn means a cheaper wedding. A disadvantage is the lack of control over weather. This could mean pop-up storms—thunderstorms that are difficult to predict, or blistering heat beating down on guests and family. Another drawback

The choice between an indoor and an outdoor wedding often comes down to the personality of the bride and groom. While some prefer to commune with nature in the idyllic woods or with the sun glinting off the lake water, others prefer the timeless church bells ringing out at the conclusion of their happy nuptials. There are benefits and detriments to both indoor and outdoor weddings, of course.

INDOOR WEDDINGS One of the strengths of an indoor wedding is that it will be easier to set up and tear down. There is no need to transport and set up chairs from another location. This can mean less stress and more time to focus on more important things. Another pro of indoor weddings is having the wedding and reception in the same location. Often churches or indoor ceremony sites have banquet or recreational rooms that could easily host a reception. A con of indoor weddings is that it is harder for the photographer. Indoor weddings typically have less light, which makes the photographer’s job more challenging. Also, spatial limitations leave the photographer with fewer angles then would be possible at an outdoor wedding. Another obstacle is the limitations of decorations. The adornments must be approved by the church or site and therefore it could limit the type and quantity of the decorations. The choice between indoor and outdoor is one in which there are a lot of considerations, but both can offer the bride and groom the opportunity for the wedding of their dreams. THE BRIDE’S RESOURCE

to an outdoor wedding is the distractions of the environment. Noise pollution from cars and lawnmowers could distract from the ceremony, as well as mosquito swarming around the guests. Dirt, mud or grass stains could also affect guests—and potentially the bride’s white dress—in the process of getting everyone to the venue.

Planning a wedding? There are many things you know you must buy, from the dress and flowers to the food, but do you know all the things you can rent? The most common reaction from brides visiting our showroom in Lynchburg for the first time is surprise at the variety of items available for rental. With a diverse inventory including everything from tents, tables and chairs to linens, china, flatware and more, there is something for all tastes and budgets.

At Aztec Rental, we are constantly adding to our inventory to keep up with the latest colors and style trends. For the last several years, rustic weddings have been very popular, utilizing items such as burlap linens, natural color palettes and more organic centerpieces. This look is still holding its own but many brides are now leaning toward a more vintage look with layered linens, lace overlays and mismatched glass centerpieces. The Pantone Color of the Year 2014, Radiant Orchid, has greatly influenced linen colors this year and we have seen all shades of purples and pinks gain popularity. Recently metallic colors, especially gold tones, have been reemerging, often coupled with more muted shades like blush pink and ivory. Tented weddings are also popular and are a staple of our business. Aztec offers a variety of tent styles to choose from. Couples may schedule a site visit and a staff member will meet them at their location to measure and visually check the area where they are considering placing the tent. This will ensure the tent size desired will fit in the area and will also address any other issue that may affect set up. Aztec can also advise couples on what size tent they will need to accommodate their expected guest count. Once brides- and grooms-to-be decide what they may be interested in renting, our Aztec party consultants can provide them with a customized quote and

check availability on those items for their particular date. To secure these items, the couple may then place a reservation. It is never too early to book reservations, especially if a wedding will occur during our busy season. Generally, this season runs from May to October, so the sooner a couple books, the more likely we are to have their first choices available. Placing a reservation is easy and only requires a 50 percent down payment. We typically recommend that brides reserve the maximum number they may need of an item. That amount may be reduced once the wedding date draws closer and RSVPs start coming in. There is no penalty to reduce, or even cancel, as long as couples do so at least one week prior to the date they will be picking up or taking delivery of these items. So, book early and ensure these items will be available in the amounts needed. Delivery is available, as is set-up and break down of most items. Renting is easy, affordable and very flexible. Whether a wedding event is indoors or out, large or intimate, many options are available. With social media sites such as Pinterest to inspire ideas, it can all get pretty overwhelming. What advice do we give all our clients? Whatever the latest trends and color crazes are, weddings are very personal events. We always encourage you to tailor your décor to express your own unique style. After all, it’s your special day!

WHICH WAY TO LOVE? Finding the right direction for your marriage

Sometimes we speak as if love was a destination—a place we want to get to, or a situation or a state at which we want to arrive. We talk about “looking for love,” or “finding love,” “being in love,” or even “falling out of love.” This gives the impression that love is something external, something that happens to us. It is not hard for those in Lynchburg and the surrounding area to take advantage of the rich history of our region. Whether it is exploring the James River that winds through downtown or enjoying the Jeffersonian architecture of his retreat at Poplar Forest, there are many things to experience and remember.

Weddings are no different, with many venues that retain the character and fortitude of years past. Here are a few historic places to say, “I do.”

THE TRIVIUM ESTATE AND CONFERENCE CENTER An antebellum home built in 1832 is the centerpiece of The Trivium Estate. It once served as the residence of influential nurse, Virginia Henderson. In recent years, the house has been renovated and redecorated with a more contemporary look. “We tried to keep as much of the historical architecture intact as possible,” owner Heidi Baker said. “We also added all the ceremony structures.” These structures include a gazebo, a pergola, an arbor and a 3,000-square-foot ballroom. According to Baker, the pergola is the most popular ceremony location. There is also a large pond on the property, where a gazebo ceremony location offers a breathtaking view. The 11-acre property also boasts a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

HISTORIC RIVERVIEW ON THE JAMES With the word “historic” in the title of the property, you can be sure that this venue offers everything needed for a momentous occasion. Located on the James River north of downtown Lynchburg, this venue is pastoral and rural, with all the conveniences of being located near the city. “Not only do we have history and the foothills of the Blue Ridge, you have the beauty of the James River,” Jane Proctor, site manager, said. “It is elegant and traditional and yet fun can be had there, which is a fantastic combination.” Both elegance and tradition can be found at the 1873 Riverview House. The Georgianstyle farm house holds up to 75 guests and offers views of the mountains and the water. Fun for wedding guests can also be had at the Fireplace and Grill, the 19th century Fox Den, and from the rolling lawn down to the James River. The most popular ceremony location at this venue is on the lawn overlooking the James.

WINRIDGE MANOR

TIMBERLAKE TAVERN

Winridge Manor is a Greek Revival home, built by Wallace Taylor in 1910. Taylor worked as an insurance salesman and was the founder of Piedmont automobiles. Janet Avance, the fifth owner of the home, completely renovated the house and property from 2007 to 2009. The venue specializes in outdoor weddings with a beautiful garden. Couples have also been married on the front porch and brick side stairs of the house. Getting married at the manor is an all-inclusive deal.

Timberlake Tavern, known to some as “Lynchburg’s Hidden Treasure,” was built in the late 1920s by developers Edley Craighill and Fred Showalter. It is located on a knoll above Timber Lake and affords a majestic view of the surrounding mountains. Timberlake United Methodist Church was born in the tavern and held their first service there in 1953. Sold in 2006, it was then turned into a bed and breakfast and a venue for special events. The tavern includes a dining room/ballroom with oak floors and ceiling and can hold up to 300 guests. There are two giant fireplaces in the tavern along with a wrap-around veranda. Services offered by the Timberlake Tavern include an Event Manager to help create your dream wedding.

“We have my preferred vendors, people who work for me and the weddings that I book. We include it all in one bill so it’s stress-free,” Avance said. “We do everything from the beginning to the end. This makes the day more enjoyable for everyone, and the bride still plans her day the way that she wants it.” This does not mean, however, that the couple can’t bring in their own vendor. They will be credited for it in the total bill. Winridge Manor was the host of My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding in October 2013.

Each of these venues offers the opportunity for a perfect wedding day. Taking advantage of the rich history of the surrounding area can make for a classic and unforgettable occasion—a place where your history as a married couple truly begins.

PERFECTLY PRESERVED Advice on preserving your cake top, dress and flowers

After the “I Dos” are said, the last song at the reception is played and the sparklers for your grand exit burn out, the rest of your life as a married couple is before you. But there are several elements of your wedding day that you will likely want to preserve—either for the first year or for decades to come. We have taken the guesswork out of a few of these with a quick list of best practices to perfectly preserve your cake topper, dress and flowers. CAKE TOPPER Many couples celebrate their first anniversary by taking their wedding cake topper out of the freezer to relive that first special bite at their wedding. To make this a reality, put plans in place ahead of your wedding day. Appoint a close friend or family member to save the top of the cake once the reception is over. Have them remove any delicate pieces, like icing flowers, then chill it thoroughly in the fridge or freezer before wrapping it in several layers of plastic wrap (this keeps it from sticking). Skip the aluminum foil unless it’s placed on top of the plastic wrap layers—using it alone can lead to freezer burn. Certain types of cake withstand the cold better than others. Ask your wedding cake professional for tips on choosing one that will freeze well if this is important to you. When it is time to thaw the cake, take it out of the freezer, completely unwrap it and then let it thaw on a plate for 24 hours. Or, skip the hassle and have your cake pro make you a duplicate topper or mini replica of your wedding cake when your anniversary rolls around.

WEDDING GOWN Your dress is full of memories and is typically a fairly large investment. Save it for the next generation by preserving it properly. It is best to start with a professional dry cleaning to get any wedding day stains out of the dress. intimidating, hiring a professional may very well be worth the time saved on your part, and it will ensure that the preservation is done properly.

FLOWERS Hanging flowers to dry and pressing them into art are two of the simplest, most costeffective ways to preserve your flowers after your wedding day. Other options certainly exist, such as freeze drying, so talk with your florist well in advance of your wedding date about time and cost involved if you choose to go this route. Bouquets are an obvious choice for hang drying. To DIY it, simply bundle them together securely with string or a rubber band, and hang in a cool, dry place for two to three weeks until the moisture has completely left the blooms. If you have pets or kids around the house, hang the flowers in a place where they won’t be tampered with, like the inside of your closet. Once they are completely dry, carefully transfer them either to a vase for displaying or into a shoe box lined with tissue to store them. I have been married for nine years and have two children, and I know first-hand the complications that financial decisions can have on a family. There are a few simple steps to take after you get married in order to make finances a part of marriage that will bring you together.

STEP #1: Decide who will take care of keeping track of all the checks and balances. It is important to know how much money is coming in and how much is going out, and who is keeping record of all of your expenses.

What’s in your new last name may be less important to you right after the wedding than how to get it officially changed. The process is a bit lengthier than you might anticipate, but we are here to help. Here is how to get a jump on switching your maiden name to your married name once you have said “I Do.” MARRIAGE LICENSE This is the first piece to officially have your new name on it. Without this document, changing your name on other forms is more difficult. So get this one done and make sure it is correct!

DRIVER’S LICENSE This is your primary form of ID. Simply visit your DMV with your marriage license, old driver’s license and another form of identification in hand. While you’re there, you might as well change your car title and registration.

SOCIAL SECURITY CARD You can download a replacement application form from www. sscardapplication.com. Fill it out and mail it in to the supplied address or take it to your local Social Security office. Processing can only be done with your original documents in your old and new name.

PASSPORT Visit www.travel.state.gov to download your Passport Amendment/Validation Application, Form DS-19. VOTER REGISTRATION Call your local registrar’s office and have them send or fax you a name change form. Ask what form of proof is needed (it varies from state to state).

BANK, EMPLOYMENT/PAYROLL, INSURANCE, HOSPITALS, CREDIT CARDS, POST OFFICE, ETC. Type up a letter with the proper information. (Old/new name, account number, social security number, etc.) and include a copy of your marriage certificate. All changes are free.

WHEN TO APPLY: You can apply up until the day of the wedding. The license must be used within 60 days of issue. The license will be issued upon completion and acceptance of the application. This must be completed by the officiant performing the ceremony. Check with your officiant to see if he or she will also send in the completed application or if you need to take care of that yourself.

REQUIREMENTS: For all persons 18 years of age and older: The couple must both go in person to

complete and sign the application. No ID is required. Persons 16-17 years of age must have a parent present to sign authorization.

REMARRIAGES: Applicants will be required to give an accurate account on all previous marriages.

MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS: There are no blood tests or exams necessary for a marriage license in the state of Virginia.

FEE: There is a $30 fee for application (cash or check). These guidelines pertain to Lynchburg, VA. Call your local circuit county clerks office for your area guidelines.

The bulk of her responsibilities are centered around the celebrations: • Assists with stuffing invitations and putting favors together • Coordinates the bridesmaids to plan bridal showers and bachelorette party. • Helps the bride stay on time and focused the day of the wedding and accompanies her to all wedding day appointments. • Ready to run last minute errands or help with those final details to see that everything runs smoothly for the rehearsal, ceremony, and reception. • Responsible for the groom’s ring, bride’s bouquet, and fixing train and veil the day of the wedding. • Helps the flower girl find her place during the ceremony. • Assists with decorating and clean up. • Makes sure the gifts and bride’s belongings get to the proper place.

BRIDESMAIDS The bridesmaid’s most important role is to provide emotional support for the bride during the planning process and throughout the wedding. There are also pre-wedding tasks that are important to perform: • Assist with stuffing invitations and putting favors together. • Assist the Maid/Matron of Honor with showers and bachelorette party and keep track of the gifts received. • Makes sure the bride has her

honeymoon bag packed and everything she needs for the wedding day. • Keeps the party going at the reception. • Helps with decorating and clean up.

BEST MAN The best man is more than just a glorified groomsmen, he’s the groom’s right-hand man: • Serves as the groom’s personal assistant before and during the wedding. • Helps the groom choose formal wear and coordinate the other groomsmen’s rentals. • Organizes the bachelor party. • Holds the bride’s ring the day of the wedding. • Helps the ring bearer find his place during the ceremony. • Makes sure the marriage license and honorarium are delivered to the officiant. • Gives the first toast at the reception. • Decorates the getaway car. • Makes sure the groom’s honeymoon bag gets in the car. • Returns his tux.

GROOMSMEN • Assists the Best Man with the bachelor party. • Makes sure the groom has everything he needs for the ceremony and honeymoon. • Run any errands he may need. • Keeps the party going at the reception. • Helps decorate the getaway car. • Helps get the gifts to the proper place.
