Norfolk’s relaxing beach communities of Ocean View and East Beach will leave you feeling as though you’re in a whole other world—one filled with fresh seafood, sand and seaside fun.

history The area’s unique history dates back hundreds of years and is full of interesting discoveries. Dining After a day at the beach, take advantage of Ocean View’s dining hot spots. Stop in to Jesse’s Taqueria for some fresh, homemade and authentic Mexican food. If you’re craving something from the sea, Shipwreck Sally’s offers delectable

seafood dishes for breakfast or lunch. Dine at Razzo, a simple, warm locale that offers Italian dishes such as lasagna and veal marsala.

I

Celebrating two decades of bringing unforgettable performances from around the world, the Virginia Arts Festivals pulls out all the stops for its 20th Anniversary.

t began as a dream: to gather the world’s best artists and share their gifts with the people of Norfolk and surrounding areas. Since 1997, the Virginia Arts Festival has brought hundreds of artists to Norfolk’s concert halls and theaters, clubs and churches, and parks and schools. And this year, to celebrate their 20th anniversary, the Festival has created a spectacular anniversary season. Beloved for its great musical performances, the Festival has also become a force in the world of dance, an art that is superbly represented this year. The Festival opens with a Dance Celebration that showcases the brightest and best of the dance world, in performances that dazzle the eye and lift the soul. Dancers from American Ballet Theatre, Britain’s Birmingham Royal Ballet, Mark Morris Dance Group, Richmond Ballet, and more will perform April 9 and 10 in Norfolk’s Chrysler Hall. Flanking that gala performance will be appearances by two of the greatest American dance companies: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, hailed as “the most bravura dancers on the planet” (Chicago Sun-Times), performs February 26-28; and the legendary Dance Theatre of Harlem returns with the world premiere of a new work commissioned by the Virginia Arts Festival, May 13-16. Among the great music performances in this year’s Festival is a concert sure to be starred on every classical music lover’s calendar, when 18-time Grammy Award-winning cellist Yo Yo Ma and the great virtuoso pianist Emanuel Ax perform together April 12. The Festival’s chamber music offerings, unmatched in this or any other

area, round out a season of great music; see the Festival web site at vafest.org for details. Theater lovers have reasons to celebrate in the 2016 Festival as well. Joining a worldwide celebration of Shakespeare, in the 400th anniversary year of the Bard’s death, the Virginia Arts Festival will join together the Virginia Stage Company and the Virginia Symphony and Chorus for a spectacular new staging of The Tempest, with the full orchestra and chorus performing music composed by Jean Sibelius, conducted by JoAnn Falletta. This fully staged production will be performed April 16-17 at Chrysler Hall. Also celebrating its 20th anniversary is the Virginia International Tattoo, which has brought tens of thousands of people to Norfolk from around the world over the years. Named the top U.S. event of North America’s 100 Best Events for 2016 by the American Bus Association, the Tattoo is an awe-inspiring spectacle of music and might, featuring pipers, drummers, drill teams, and performers from throughout the United States and across the globe, April 21-24. And in case all that great entertainment, inspiring performances, and sheer beauty makes you thirsty, the Virginia Arts Festival is a proud copresenter (with FestEvents) of the Virginia Beer Festival, May 21-22. Top off your Festival fun with a frosty mug or foaming stein of brews from around the world! For more information and tickets to Virginia Arts Festival performances, visit vafest.org or call 757-282-2822.
