The Freemason District turns up the charm with boutiques, cobblestone streets and a whole lot of history.

HISTORY

The tree-lined streets and grand old homes of Norfolk’s historic Freemason District, recently named by the American Planning Association as a Top 10 Great Neighborhood, offer a view into a bygone era. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Historic Freemason is located along the Elizabeth River just down the brick pathway from Town Point Park, Nauticus and the Battleship Wisconsin. It was first settled in 1686, when “one hundred acres of land in this vicinity were granted to the Elizabeth River Parish for a glebe.” It is the city’s only neighborhood which accurately depicts a visual chronology of architectural styles over three centuries. Neighborhood landmarks include Omar’s Carriage House, a historic carriage house turned causal bistro, and the Pagoda Tea House and Restaurant, complete with the largest Koi pond on the east coast, a gift to Norfolk from the Taiwan Provincial Government.

& EAST BEACH Norfolk’s relaxing beach communities of Ocean View and East Beach will leave you feeling as though you’re in a whole other world—one filled with fresh seafood, sand and seaside fun.

HISTORY The area’s unique history dates back hundreds of years and is full of interesting discoveries. Ocean View’s Willoughby Spit, an independent peninsula originally inhabited by The Willoughby Family, has been a favorite Norfolk marvel since it first appeared as a result of a mid-1600’s hurricane. Where there once had been only water now lies a serene strip of land created by Mother Nature. Past times at the beaches, neighborhoods and commercial districts of Ocean View are lovingly preserved and shared in collections of memorabilia, images and oral histories at the Ocean View Station Museum.

DINING After a day at the beach, take advantage of Ocean View’s dining hot spots. Stop in to Jessy’s Taqueria for some fresh, homemade and authentic Mexican food. If you’re craving something from the sea, Shipwreck Sally’s offers delectable seafood

dishes for breakfast or lunch. Dine at Razzo, a simple, warm locale that offers Italian dishes such as rigatoni bolognese and veal marsala.

ENTERTAINMENT There’s no better way to enjoy the neighborhood than a day at the beach! This area is home to several city beaches on the Chesapeake Bay. The City of Norfolk maintains three beach parks including the Community Beach Park, Sarah Constant Beach Park and Ocean View Beach Park. Grab the family or your friends and head out for a relaxing afternoon of sunbathing and swimming! Enjoy fishing on the Ocean View Fishing Pier and if you’re hungry, grab a bite to eat at the pier’s on-site restaurant, known for its super fresh seafood. Or if you’d prefer to stay on land, schedule a round of golf at the Ocean View Golf Course located one block from the Chesapeake Bay and marina.

NORFOLK PUBLIC ART

C

ross a street or turn a corner just about anywhere in Norfolk and you are likely to come across a stunning piece of public art. For more than 10 years, the Norfolk Public Art Program has strived to unite, energize and inspire the unique character of Norfolk. Artists are actively working in studios open to the public. Galleries abound, showing everything from classic watercolors to the newest, cutting-edge techniques. And almost everywhere there is public art. The beautifully traditional sculpture “The Homecoming” salutes Navy families. Nearby is the poignant “Armed Forces Memorial,” bronze letters from service members to their families waiting for someone who would never return. Not too far from this touching art is the exuberant “MetalMatisse,” a 30-foot-tall bouquet of stainless steel flowers that chimes and flashes color when it detects movement. Those who venture to the Ocean View beaches will see the restroom buildings decked out with bold colors depicting some of the sights and activities loved by year-round residents. Other unexpected places where art abounds are the downtown parking garages. The Freemason garage is entirely done in a Chinese fortune cookie theme; instead of a cookie, your parking place has a fortune for you. Entering the Virginia Zoo, the first thing you see is a life-size aluminum African elephant made of butterflies, “All Things Within All Things.” Pay close attention to the butterfly on the end of the elephant’s trunk. At the entrance to Norfolk Botanical Garden is a new sculpture, “Intertwine,” a 20-foot sculpture

V

irginia Arts Festival enters its third decade with a starstudded spring! The Festival will welcome the incomparable violinist Itzhak Perlman and the ravishing pianist Olga Kern; and making the roster of classical music performances even more irresistible, they will present the spectacular Berlioz Requiem with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and an Easter weekend performance of Bach’s St. John Passion with the Internationale Bach Academie of Stuttgart. The 2017 dance season leaps to new heights with the Festival debut of the Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, in their stunningly beautiful staging of Swan Lake; and visits by visionary contemporary choreographers and their companies, including Britain’s Richard Alston Dance Company, Los Angeles’ vivid Lula Washington Dance Theatre, and a world premiere from New York’s groundbreaking Urban Bush Women. Highlighting the dance season will be Mark Morris Dance Group’s performance of Dido and Aeneas, with opera star Stephanie Blythe singing the roles of Dido and the Sorceress. There are great voices to be heard,

as soprano Kathleen Battle brings her wonderfully moving Underground Railroad concert, backed by the Norfolk State University Choir; and there will be a Festival debut of the female R&B trio KING, protégés of the late genius of innovation, Prince. The 21st Virginia International Tattoo promises to be awe-inspiring, with more than 1,000 performers. The Virginia Arts Festival will once again present the June Funhouse Festival in Williamsburg, featuring some of the most influential artists in pop, folk, jazz, blues and more. Fun-seeking travelers on Memorial Day Weekend will find lots to enjoy at the Festival including the phenomenal 13-year-old jazz prodigy pianist Joey Alexander, and the hilarious Reduced Shakespeare Company. And in case all that great entertainment, inspiring performances, and sheer beauty makes you thirsty, the Virginia Arts Festival is proud to co-present (with Festevents) the Virginia Beer Festival, May 19-20. Top off your Festival fun with a frosty mug and foaming stein of brews from around the world! For more information and tickets to Virginia Arts Festival performances, visit vafest.org or call 757-282-2822.
