Meet
Katie and Kristin
}
Phi Mu sorority sisters Katie and Kristin are students at Christopher Newport University. Katie, who graduates this year with a B.S. in Psychology, plans to attend nursing school in the hopes of becoming a flight nurse. Kristin, a member of the CNU Class of 2015, is pursuing a double major in Marketing and Management, with a minor in Psychology.
Insider Tips For visiting friends and family: Katie: I would recommend walking the Noland Trail or visiting Hilton Village or grabbing Rita’s in the summer … Added Kristin: And don’t forget to stop at the Lion’s Bridge!
Bargain Shopping: Both: We love to go in Act II consignment shop to look and have fun with our sorority sisters! We’ve even found a Lilly Pulitzer dress there! Arts scene: Both: Peninsula Fine Arts Center is great for people who really appreciate art. Aromas has a live music night. We love to go there with friends and listen to local artists perform. Best-kept secret in Newport News: Both: We love spending time walking through Hilton Village. You can stop and get delicious cupcakes at Couture Cakes by Nika, have fun with the girls shopping, and dine at a restaurant unlike any other place in Newport News: Circa 1918. Their food is so unique and it’s a small, cozy restaurant with a great atmosphere.
Favorite Fests: Katie: My favorite festival is the Greek Fest because the food is great and it’s very popular and lively with good music and activities. Kristin: Since attending CNU, I have always loved Hollydazzle. I absolutely love getting dressed up in my scarves and mittens and enjoy the fireworks and festivities with all my friends! Outdoor Fun: Katie: The Noland Trail is the best for scenery and you can bring the dogs! Added Kristin: The 5-mile trail there is beautiful and it’s a nice, quiet way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Nightlife: Both: Brickhouse Tavern is the best nightspot in town, especially for college students and young people. Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill is also a fun nightspot, due to its lively atmosphere. Eating Out: Katie: Plaza Azteca is a good place to go for GREAT Mexican food. Taste Unlimited is a unique eatery. All of their ingredients are top quality and absolutely delicious. Mike’s Place is a local Irish pub. If I’m ever craving a great burger, I go to Mike’s. The Crab Shack is one of the best places to get seafood in Newport News Added Kristin: I love going to grab a bite at Aromas. It’s great for a quick, yummy bite! Date Nights: Both: Fin in Port Warwick is a great “fancy date” spot. Tucanos and Cove Tavern in City Center aren’t too incredibly pricey. Circa 1918 in Hilton Village is another awesome date spot!

Meet the
Spiller Family
For visiting friends and family: We recommend going to The Mariners’ Museum and the Virginia Living Museum. We also have taken our friends and relatives to the Noland Trail for a walk or a run. To relax: Bike Route 1, which runs along the athletic fields of Christopher Newport University, crosses the Lion’s Bridge and continues along the James River all the way to the James River Bridge. This is our way of getting away from a busy day for an hour. We also love running and hiking on the Noland Trail. Special occasions: For adults, we’d tell them to go get a good bottle of wine handselected by George Ackerman, who really knows his wines and cheeses at the Warwick Cheese Shoppe, and take in a sunset on the James River. Don’t miss: A walk on the Noland Trail. So quiet, calm and beautiful and yet, so alive with nature. The trail’s splendor changes with the seasons— but each one is amazing.
}
Lisa Spiller, a marketing professor at Christopher Newport University, and James Spiller, a physician with Riverside Medical Group, grew up on Lake Erie, so it should come as no surprise that they and their children pursue hobbies that keep them on the water and physically active! Their daughter, Suzanne, graduates this year from the University of Richmond law school, while their son, Chad, is part of the graduating class of 2014 at the College of William & Mary. Their youngest, Jack, is in his final year at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, where he is co-captain of the school’s cross country team.
Insider Tips
Favorite fests: The Greek Festival because we enjoy the culture, music, food and dancing and we like supporting and seeing all of our wonderful and loving Greek friends. We also go to the Newport News Fall Festival and enjoy all of the local artisans featured. Outdoor fun: A day spent aboard our small motorboat on the James River—fishing, wakeboarding, water skiing or just hanging out as a family is ecstasy. We also enjoy kayaking on the James River and golfing at Deer Run Golf Course. Eating out: The Pearl in Oyster Point is awesome and Chef Rob Cappetta creates the most tantalizing dishes—even his salads for lunch are as uniquely presented as they are delicious. We also enjoy going to The Bonefish Grill. You just can’t beat its fresh-baked bread and dipping oil. Arts scene: We enjoy musicals, and we are truly blessed to have the CNU Ferguson Center for the Arts, which features so many outstanding Broadway productions and concerts.

Sample Itineraries Newport News: Where everything is “shipshape” Coastal Virginia has the largest naval base in the world, plus it’s the gateway to the sea, so Newport News is a fitting location for all things “ship-related.” It is home to The Mariners’ Museum, the largest maritime museum in North America, as well as Newport News Shipbuilding, the largest ship builder in the United States. And because Newport News owes much of its existence to the seafood industry, it’s only natural to see working watermen bringing their harvest into this river city before shipping it to all parts of the country. We invite all land lubbers to spend a few days here learning about our fascinating maritime heritage!
Day One: Morning
• Begin at The Mariners’ Museum –Includes 35,000+ maritime artifacts including models, paintings and figureheads. Designated by Congress as America’s National Maritime Museum. • While there, check out the USS Monitor Center – Home to the Civil War Ironclad’s iconic gun turret.
Afternoon
• Enjoy the freshest catch-of-the-day at The Crab Shack Restaurant. From here, you might catch a glimpse of our local watermen working the river. • Make your way to the Victory Arch, where you may see an aircraft carrier docked for overhaul or ships unloading cargo from abroad. • While downtown, check out Hull Number One (aka Dorothy the tugboat), the first ship built by Newport News Shipbuilding.
Day Two: Morning
• Take a walking tour of Historic Hilton Village, built during World War I to accommodate the influx of shipyard workers. Shop and dine in Hilton’s independently owned stores and restaurants • A short distance away, you’ll find Newport News Shipbuilding, the heart of our city’s maritime tradition. Snap a picture of “Big Blue,” the
233-ft. tall shipyard crane weighing 10.1 million pounds.
Afternoon
• Stop in at the Virginia War Museum, where galleries document America’s wars from 1775 to the present. • Enjoy waterfront dining at The Train Station Restaurant, nestled in a small inlet of the James River, where you might see a ship working its way down the river.
Day Three:
Take a scenic trip by car through one of the bridge-tunnels to enjoy some shipboard fun in our neighboring cities: • Take a bus tour of the Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest naval installation. • Hit downtown Norfolk for a selfguided tour of the main deck of the Battleship Wisconsin, the largest and last battleship ever built by the U.S. Navy. • Visit Nauticus, the National Maritime Center, and tour the Hampton Roads Naval Museum inside. • Dine aboard the Spirit of Norfolk or take a 2-hour narrated harbor cruise or a sunset cruise on board the American Rover.
Visit www.newport-news.org for more sample itineraries or call the Newport News Visitor Center at 888-493-7386 or 757-886-7777 for suggestions.
Newport News: A surprising urban oasis for outdoor enthusiasts It may surprise you to learn that Newport News is home to more than two dozen parks, including the largest municipal park east of the Mississippi: Newport News Park. At more than 8,000 acres, Newport News Park is nine times larger than New York City’s Central Park. Its natural beauty makes it a favorite destination for campers who love the great outdoors. Boat rentals are available and fishing is permitted in two large freshwater lakes. You’ll also find miles of hiking and biking trails, an archery range, disc golf, a high-ropes course, and two golf courses.
Day One: Explore Newport News Park
• Go geo-caching for small treasures. • Explore more than 30 miles of hiking and biking trails. • Try a round of disc golf. • Rent a canoe, paddleboat or a jon boat. • Check out the floral displays at the Japanese Peace Garden. • Visit the Discovery Center and learn about the Battle of Dam No. 1, which was fought within park grounds. • Golf at Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run, rated 4 stars by Golf Digest. • Go mountain biking in the Harwood’s Mill section of the park.
Day Two: Go Bird Watching
• Begin at Newport News Park, where you’ll find a variety of birds along the trails that pass through the park’s swamps, marshes and woodlands. • Stop next at The Mariners’ Museum Park, where the Noland Trail offers possible sightings of woodpeckers and songbirds. • While at the Noland Trail, enjoy a picnic lunch while admiring a gorgeous view of the James River from the Lion’s Bridge. • After lunch, explore the boardwalk at the Virginia Living Museum in search of pelicans, egrets, herons and turkeys. • Finish your day at Deer Park, where you’ll find nesting songbirds and ducks.
Day Three: Go Fishing
• Go saltwater fishing off one of the longest piers on the East Coast, the James River Bridge Fishing Pier. • Enjoy freshwater fishing at Deer Park, Mariners’ Museum Park or Newport News Park.
Day Four:
Stop and Smell the Roses

Getting Here
Our location in the heart of Coastal Virginia means we’re less than 400 miles from many major U.S. cities, including Baltimore, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. Amtrak offers daily direct service from Washington, D.C., while the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport currently includes regular flights on Allegiant, Delta, Frontier and US Airways. More flights are available at both Norfolk International and Richmond International Airports. Reaching Newport News is simple. Whether you take the scenic route, use the interstate highway network, reach us by plane or train, you’ll find us “right in the middle of everything.” Visit www.newport-news.org for an online interactive map or www.map. visitcoastalvirginia.com/ for a map of the region.
