Insider Tips For visiting friends and family: Michael: I would recommend going to Newport News Park and walking the trails. Also, stop by The Mariners’ Museum to see the great things it has to offer. On a hot summer day, a trip to Pelican’s SnoBalls is a must! Andrew: And don’t forget City Center at Oyster Point for some great food and to catch a movie at Paragon Theater. Outdoor fun: Michael: The Noland Trail for a walk or run. The scenery is beautiful. Andrew: And nearby, there’s the Lion’s Bridge, which has some great picnicking areas.

Eating Out: Michael: Plaza Azteca for its Mexican food is one of my favorite places to go. Another great restaurant is Harpoon Larry’s. If you’re looking for good seafood, then it’s a definite. Andrew: I love going to Azzuri’s, mainly because it has some great Italian food.

Meet

Michael & Andrew Alpha Kappa Psi brothers Michael and Andrew are students at Christopher Newport University. Michael, a member of the Class of 2015, is pursuing a major in Communication Studies with a minor in Business Administration and hopes to work in a field related to Public Relations/Social Media Marketing. Andrew, also with the Class of 2015, is working toward a degree in Political Science and a minor in Business Administration. After graduation he would like to attend law school and eventually pursue a career in business law.

Date Night: Both: The Cove Tavern in City Center is an ideal “date” spot. It isn’t too expensive, which makes it great. If you are looking for something more on the fancy side, then FIN in Port Warwick would be the place to go. Get Moving: Both: Newport News Park offers pickleball, horseshoes, biking and hiking. Another great place for outdoor fun is Huntington Park Beach, which has tennis and even volleyball.

Lion’s Bridge

Nightlife: Michael and Andrew: Brickhouse Tavern is by far the best nightspot for college students! Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill and Manhattan’s New York Deli & Pub have lively atmospheres, making them fun as well.

Favorite Festival: Both: Hollydazzle by far. It is such a great way to start off celebrating the holidays by lighting up City Center at Oyster Point, with its huge holiday tree, awesome fireworks, and music!

Insider Tips The Mariners’ Museum

For visiting friends and family: We both have immediate family in Europe, so they always come to Newport News to visit us. We take them to the Lion’s Bridge, to City Center for dinner and for walks around the fountain, for strolls through Hilton Village, and we have enjoyed taking them to the Virginia Living Museum. To relax: We like to go to the Noland trail and also to The Mariners’ Museum, where we rent a paddle boat. Rainy day fun: On rainy days, we’ve gone to places like Paragon Theater, Rebounderz, laser tag, and Barnes & Noble.

Special occasions: We like to go to Circa 1918 to celebrate special occasions whether it’s an anniversary, birthday, or having friends visit us from out of town. Don’t miss: The Newport News Greek Festival! Favorite Attractions: The most significant attraction in Newport News has got to be the Ferguson Center for the Arts. It is a beautiful, first-rate concert hall with excellent acoustics. It has put Newport News on the map, drawing acts such as Andrea Bocelli, Blue Man Group, and others to come to our city, and it benefits all. Favorite fests: Again, the Newport News Greek Festival, but we also enjoy Hollydazzle and the Port Warwick Art and Sculpture Festival.

itineraries

Sample Itineraries

Visit www.newport-news.org for more sample itineraries or call the Newport News Visitor Center at 888-493-7386 or 757-886-7777 for suggestions.

Sip, Savor and “Sea” – Newport News is a fitting location for all things related to the sea. It is home to The Mariners’ Museum and Newport News Shipbuilding, and it’s here that working watermen export their harvest to other parts of the country. Spend a few days learning about our fascinating maritime heritage! Day One Morning Start your day at The Mariners’ Museum, the largest maritime museum in North America. It is home to the USS Monitor Center, where artifacts recovered from the wreck of the Civil War ironclad are preserved. Afternoon Enjoy the freshest catch-of-the-day at The Crab Shack for breathtaking views of the James River, where you may see our local watermen working the river. Take a stroll and shop in quaint Historic Hilton Village, built during World War I to accommodate the influx of Newport News Shipyard workers. Stop in at the Virginia War Museum, where America’s wars from 1775 to the present come to life.

Head downtown to check out the tugboat Dorothy, the first ship built by Newport News Shipbuilding in 1891. Make your way to the Victory Arch, which has paid tribute to our military heroes since 1919, and to Victory Landing Park, where it’s possible to see an aircraft carrier docked for overhaul or ships unloading cargo from abroad. Indulge in fine dining at Circa 1918 for mouthwatering farm-to-table meals and fresh seafood paired with outstanding wines. Possibly catch a touring Broadway show or other exciting performance at Christopher Newport University’s spectacular Ferguson Center for the Arts.

Day Two Morning Spend the morning at the Virginia Living Museum and meet the many sea creatures who live in our local waters, from the Chesapeake Bay and the Great Dismal Swamp to the Atlantic Ocean. Afternoon Have lunch at Craft 60 Ale House, where every dish is not just homemade; it’s handcrafted. While there, check out the extensive specialty and craft beer list. Enjoy a scenic harbor cruise aboard Hampton’s Miss Hampton II to see the famous Hampton Roads harbor, site of the Civil War Battle of the Ironclads. Finish off the night with dinner at Travinia Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar and a movie at Paragon City Center

12, complete with leather reclining seats (with foot rests) and an extensive collection of craft beers and wines! Day Three Visit the Mermaid Winery in Norfolk, then check out the Battleship Wisconsin, the largest and last battleship ever built by the U.S. Navy, and Nauticus, the National Maritime Center. Head down to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront to stroll along the Boardwalk and climb Cape Henry Lighthouse for a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay. Carve out some time to enjoy an Orange Crush at Waterman’s Surfside Grille as you sip, savor and “sea” the Virginia Beach Oceanfront!

Beauty and the Beast – Outdoor enthusiasts and other visitors will be happy to learn that Newport News is a surprising urban oasis. It is home to more than 30 parks, plus an incredible variety of native wildlife – from deer and fox to raccoon and beaver. Visit us for some gifts of nature – plus other treasures – you’d never expect to find in a city! Day One: Explore the beauty of Newport News Park and nearby attractions Go geo-caching for small treasures. Explore more than 30 miles of hiking and biking trails. Try a round of disc golf. Rent a canoe, paddleboat or a jon boat. Picnic among the floral displays at the Japanese Peace Garden, where you might be lucky enough to see a deer and her fawn! Visit the Discovery Center and learn about the Battle of Dam No. 1, fought within park grounds. Golf at Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run, rated 4 stars by Golf Digest. Go mountain biking in the Harwood’s Mill section of the park. Nearby, visit a beautifully restored antebellum home, Lee Hall Mansion, and/or Endview Plantation, an estate completed in 1769.

24

Hungry? Head to Ippin Mono Kitchen to sample their dragon rolls or feast on beastly creatures, such as octopus, big eye tuna, red snapper, squid, eel and other delicacies from the sea! After your meal, shop for your “beauty” or your “beast” at Patrick Henry Mall. Day Two: Go Hunting for “Beasts” and Other Creatures Visit The Mariners’ Museum Park, where the Noland Trail offers possible sightings of woodpeckers and songbirds. While on the Noland Trail, enjoy a picnic lunch while admiring a gorgeous view of the mighty James River from the Lion’s Bridge, where you’ll find massive stone lion sculptures. Just down the street, explore the nature trail at the Virginia Living Museum in search of pelicans, egrets, herons, turkeys, red wolves, bald eagles and frolicking otters.

Have lunch at the Wilde Side Café inside the museum, and enjoy a mouth-watering 100% Angus burger or a bowl of homemade beef chili. Take a scenic drive along the Colonial Parkway to Busch Gardens Williamsburg, where you can tackle monster thrill rides like the Loch Ness Monster, the Griffon or the Battering Ram. Cap off your day with a visit to Hampton’s St. George Brewing Company, named for a third-century Roman soldier who slew a firebreathing dragon. Day Three: Stop and Smell the Roses Start your day with breakfast at the café found inside Anderson’s Home & Garden Showplace, which is so much more than a garden center! Here, you can shop for beautiful plants while sipping on a “Green Monster” from their juice bar. Oh, and watch out for “The Whipper,” an omelet that might just make you go bananas!

Take the Art & Sculpture Driving Tour, which showcases more than two dozen of the city’s magnificent outdoor art. Have lunch at Schlesinger’s Steakhouse and sink your teeth into the Arthur Schlesinger Burger, made with the finest Certified Angus beef. Create a beautiful masterpiece of your very own at the Starving Artist Studio in Port Warwick. Surround yourself in beauty at Huntington Park’s Rose Garden (and don’t forget your camera!) Capture an awe-inspiring sunset at Huntington Park Beach. Enjoy the Brazilian tradition of grilling at Tucanos, where sizzling food is sliced right onto your plate!
