Welcome!
Ships,
Welcome to Newport News, the Commonwealth’s
5th most populous city. It’s here that visitors are treated to the vitality of a metropolitan area coupled with the charm of a small town. You can experience ships, history, and the great outdoors during your stay in Newport News. If time permits, we encourage you to plan a side trip to our neighbors in Coastal Virginia. For a sample of what each city has to offer, turn to the back cover.
Did you know Ella Fitzgerald was born in Newport News? If she were alive today, the songstress would be celebrating her 100th birthday in April. In tribute, we’re hosting a series of events that tell the story of her extraordinary life and legacy. See our Calendar of Events on Pages 9-12 for specific dates and locations.
The Mariners’ Museum
History,
In 2017, we’ll also be commemorating the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I, along with the 75th anniversary of World War II. History buffs interested in the two World Wars should check out our itinerary on Page 24. If beer and spirits are more to your liking, then read about our “Toast the Coast” trail on Page 16. Let our knowledgeable travel counselors help plan your stay in Newport News by calling us at 888-493-7386. And don’t forget to share the photos from your visit using #LOVENN.

CELEBRATION IN LIGHTS NOV. 23, 2017–JAN. 1, 2018
Celebration in Lights, Virginia’s first drive-through holiday light show, opens annually on Thanksgiving night in Newport News Park. Since 1993, Celebration in Lights has transformed Newport News Park into a magical winter wonderland, with hundreds of thousands of lights creating animated holiday scenes. Along the two-mile drive into Newport News Park, guests are treated to more than 300 individual display pieces, along with 43 arches and three miles of rope lighting. More than 800,000 individual lights make up Celebration in Lights, which takes approximately six weeks to set up. www.nnva.gov
HOLLYDAZZLE DEC. 2, 2017
Hollydazzle is a one-of-a-kind holiday show that combines synchronized fireworks, theatrical lighting, ground-based pyrotechnics and special effects all choreographed to festive music, making it one of the top shows of the year. The show transforms City Center at Oyster Point into a kaleidoscope of color reflecting on the fountains’ five-acre water surface. And because it’s “in-the-round”, the show looks the same no matter what side of the fountain you’re standing on! Typically, this popular event draws more 30,000 people to City Center. www.nnva.gov NOTE: Events are subject to cancellation and date changes. Prior to your visit, please check websites listed. INSIDER TIPS Wilson
Meet
Bree & Wilson Bever
Bree
Wilson and Bree met as students at Christopher Newport University. After enjoying four years of beautiful trails, waterfront views and great restaurants, they decided to remain in Newport News after graduation. Wilson, a college/student pastor, and Bree, a web and social marketing coordinator, live in Hidenwood with their rescued Goldendoodle, Lucy. For visiting friends and family: We love the outdoors, so one of our favorite things about Newport News is its parks and bodies of water. Also, Paragon is one of the best state-of-the-art theaters around, and it’s the perfect place to enjoy a good movie! Dog walking: Newport News Park and the Noland Trail are filled with scenic views and clear paths – perfect for dog walking!
Favorite fests: Fall Festival of Folklife, the Newport News Greek Festival, and the Port Warwick Art & Sculpture Festival. Outdoor fun: Newport News Park, the Noland Trail, and kayaking on the James River. Nightlife: We enjoy live music and good food, so City Center is one of our favorites! We love Aroma’s and Tradition Brewing Company for their drinks, food, open mic nights, and entertainment. Eating out: Midtown Eats, Thaijindesu, and First Watch. We’re big fans of eating local and Midtown Eats is the epitome of a hidden local gem that has passionate chefs and amazing food. If you enjoy Asian cuisine, Thaijindesu has some of the best Thai food ever!

INSIDER TIPS Meet the
Cameron Stephanie
Ashworth Family Cameron and Stephanie, along with their two children, Bella, 7, and Jonah, 4, have lived in Newport News for nearly 15 years. Cameron is the director of Genesis Counseling Center and of Genesis Assist. Stephanie also works at Genesis Counseling and Genesis Assist, but as the director of credentialing.
Bella
Rainy-day fun: Rainy days are good for the Bounce House (inflatables), LazerRush (laser tag), Rebounderz (indoor trampoline park), Virginia Living Museum, Mariners’ Museum, shopping, and various activities at the YMCA. For visiting friends and family: We tend to hang out around Tech Center, Jefferson Commons, Port Warwick, or City Center for the variety of shopping and dining. Jonah
Favorite parks: We visit Newport News Park quite frequently because of the diverse range of activities. We also enjoy going to the huge playground and soccer fields at Riverview Farm Park, and the Noland Trail at Mariners’ Museum Park is a favorite for jogging and hiking.
Family-friendly restaurants: Our favorite spot is PF Chang’s because it is both family friendly and a good place for adult conversation. We also recommend Plaza Azteca, Midtown Eats, Salsa’s, BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse, Kelly’s Tavern, Zoe’s Kitchen, Japan Samurai, and Brickhouse Tavern.
Birthday party suggestions: Bounce House, Virginia Living Museum, and Rebounderz. Best events for families: Outdoor concerts at City Center and Port Warwick in the summer; Newport News Greek Festival (it occurs twice a year); and Fall Festival of Folklife in Newport News Park. There are always special exhibits at the Virginia Living Museum, and ice skating at Tech Center is a terrific winter event. Don’t miss: Hollydazzle at City Center. There are food vendors, activities for the family, a tree lighting, and fireworks.

SPIRITS ABOUND IN COASTAL VIRGINIA The craft beverage movement has boomed very quickly, from just a handful of breweries, wineries and distilleries a few years ago to hundreds today.

While visiting Coastal Virginia (CoVA), there’s one thing you can be sure of – you will never go thirsty! Ironclad Distillery
We’ve rounded up your favorite “spirited” spots throughout Newport News and our neighboring cities – from New Kent County to the Virginia Beach oceanfront – and we’re calling it “Toast the Coast!” Check it out at www.newport-news.org. Admittedly, Newport News doesn’t yet have its own winery; however, we’re grateful that Tradition Brewing Company and Ironclad Distillery have put our city on the map of the craft movement. Search YouTube for Toast the Coast: Beer, Wine and Shine Trail to learn how it all began. The Newport News Tourism Development Office developed the “Toast the Coast” trail to serve as a convenient resource for visitors traveling to the region, and we’re encouraging our guests to share their photographs on Instagram by hash-tagging their images with #ToasttheCoastTrail. As more independent crafters continue to open in the region, we expect our “Toast the Coast” beer, wine and shine trail to grow.

SIP, SAVOR AND “SEA” A SAMPLE ITINER ARY
Newport News is a fitting location for all things related to the sea. It is home to The Mariners’ Museum and Newport News Shipbuilding, and it’s here that working watermen export their harvest to other parts of the country. Spend a few days learning about our fascinating maritime heritage! Day One
• Start your day at The Mariners’ Museum, the largest maritime museum in North America. It is home to the USS Monitor Center, where artifacts recovered from the wreck of the Civil War ironclad are preserved.
The Mariners’ Museum
• Enjoy the freshest catch-ofthe-day at The Crab Shack for breathtaking views of the James River, where you may see our local watermen working the river.
• Head downtown to check out the tugboat Dorothy, the first ship built by Newport News Shipbuilding in 1890. • Make your way to the Victory Arch, which has paid tribute to our military heroes since 1919, and to Victory Landing Park, where it’s possible to see an aircraft carrier docked for overhaul or ships unloading cargo from abroad. • Before leaving downtown Newport News, check out Ironclad Distillery, the city’s first operating distillery. Ironclad bourbon is made from local Virginia corn, wheat and rye, along with malted barley. It is characterized by the brackish air from Virginia’s James River, balanced with the sweet caramelized oak sap from small barrels. • Indulge in fine dining at Circa 1918 in Historic Hilton Village for mouthwatering farm-to-table meals and fresh seafood paired with outstanding wines. Historic Hilton Village
Day Two
• Spend the morning at the Virginia Living Museum and meet the many sea creatures who live in and around our local waters, from the Chesapeake Bay and the Great Dismal Swamp to the Atlantic Ocean. • Have lunch at Craft 60 Ale House, where every dish is not just homemade; it’s handcrafted. While there, check out the extensive craft beer list. • Enjoy a scenic harbor cruise aboard the Miss Hampton II in Hampton to see the famous Hampton Roads harbor, site of the Civil War Battle of the Ironclads. • Finish off the night back in Newport News with dinner at Travinia Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar, where you’ll find an extensive collection of craft beers and wines!
Day Three
• Visit the Mermaid Winery in Norfolk, and then check out the Battleship Wisconsin, the largest and last battleship ever built by the U.S. Navy, and Nauticus, the National Maritime Center. • Head down to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront to stroll along the Boardwalk and climb Cape Henry Lighthouse for a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay. • Carve out some time to enjoy an Orange Crush at Waterman’s Surfside Grille as you sip, savor and “sea” the Virginia Beach Oceanfront! • Return to Newport News and stop in at Tradition Brewing Co., the first craft brewery in Newport News, to try their full selection of beers on tap. Tradition brews the kind of beer that caters to a true beer drinker’s palate.

NEWPORT NEWS & the World Wars
Victory Arch
A SAMPLE ITINERARY Steeped in military and ship-building history, Newport News is the perfect place to commemorate the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I, along with the 75th anniversary of World War II. We invite you to take some time to explore the impact these two wars had on shaping the city we live in today – found in the remains of such places as Fort Eustis, Newport News Shipbuilding and Historic Hilton Village! Day 1 Did You Know? The Virginia War Museum opened in its present location about the same time the United States entered WWII at the end of 1941. It now has a collection of more than 70,000 artifacts, including a section of the Dachau Concentration Camp fence from World War II.
• Start at the Virginia War Museum, home to one of the top collections of WWI and WWII artifacts in the nation, including a Holt Artillery Tractor and a rare Model 1917 Tank. • Right outside the doors of the Virginia War Museum, you’ll find Huntington Park, former site of an Animal Embarkation Depot that shipped 47,237 horses and mules overseas to help with the movement of troops, artillery and supplies during The Great War (WWI). • In Huntington Park, you’ll find a Pearl Harbor Memorial, a Holocaust Memorial, and a memorial to the Four Chaplains who gave their lives to save others when the SS Dorchester sank during World War II.
• While in Huntington Park, enjoy lunch with the freshest catch-ofthe-day at The Crab Shack Restaurant, which provides diners with breathtaking views of the James River. • A short drive away, you’ll find Newport News Shipbuilding. Around 50th Street, snap a picture of “Big Blue,” the 233-foot tall crane that has a span of 540 feet from leg to leg and weighs 10.1 million pounds. • Take a stroll through Historic Hilton Village, established during World War I as the first federal war-housing project to accommodate the influx of shipyard workers. Shop and dine in Hilton’s independently owned stores and restaurants along Warwick Boulevard. • Head downtown to the Victory Arch, built in 1919 to welcome the troops returning home from WWI. The original wood and plaster arch was rebuilt in stone in 1962 and continues to serve as a memorial to our armed forces.

Did You Know? From an area near the Victory Arch, the legendary 3rd Infantry Division and 2nd Armored Division under General Patton embarked in October 1942 for Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa and our first offensive in the European Theater.
• Check out King Lincoln Park, the former site of Camp Stuart which was established in August 1917 as a temporary camp where troops were housed prior to and after returning from Europe. • While downtown, enjoy waterfront dining at The Train Station Restaurant, adjacent to the Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation where Gen. George S. Patton embarked for the Invasion of North Africa in 1942.
Day 2 • Start your day at Lee Hall Mansion. Although most well known for its Civil War history, Lee Hall Mansion will open an exhibition in spring 2017 that will cover some of Lee Hall’s history up to the WWI era, as well as local history related to the war. • Check out nearby Lee Hall Depot. Because it is currently being restored, Lee Hall Depot may not yet be open to the public; however, its exterior renovations are mostly complete. During World War I, the depot served as the initial rail link for the military when the construction of Camp Eustis on Mulberry Island began in 1918. • Grab at bite to eat at The Boxwood Inn, a historic bed and breakfast located in Lee Hall, across the street from Lee Hall Depot. • Spend the afternoon at the U.S. Army Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis, where WWI artifacts include an Escort Wagon and Liberty Truck, put into use when the Army began transitioning from animal power to motorized vehicles. An interesting WWII item on display is a Jeep Roadrailer, a vehicle converted to a makeshift locomotive that could run on railroad tracks.
Did You Know? Newport News Shipbuilding built the legendary aircraft carriers USS Yorktown, USS Enterprise, USS Hornet and USS Wasp, which became the core of the Pacific fleet in the year after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
