But Jessie also points out that she didn’t want just any beach wedding. She worked hard to make her big day stand out with vintage elements and antique style.“We went with an eclectic collection of personal and rented items to create a rustic, vintage setting,” she says. “Since the ceremony was on the beach, I wanted the reception to feel unique and almost as if you stepped back in time. I wanted to create something different from your typical beach-themed wedding.” Jessie also wanted her wedding date—April 23, 2011—to be particularly meaningful. She and Billy chose the date to mark the one-year anniversary of when he proposed. Jessie says her wedding day at the Pirate’s Cove Pavilion turned out perfectly, and even though there were so many moments that held a special and significant meaning, one really stands out. “I’ll never forget when Billy stole me off the dance floor in the middle of our reception so we could have a private moment together,” she says. “And he told me how much he loved me. Wedding Planner “The experience at Kleinfeld was like no other,” Tamarra said. “I have seen it on TV— you would know when you find your wedding gown because it makes you want to cry. That’s exactly how I felt when I found my dress.”

The auditorium was filled with anxious brides-to-be, all hoping to hear their names called in the seconds ahead. Only one bride had her wish granted that day, and her name is Tamarra Shau. When she heard her name, she squealed and leapt from her seat in excitement. “There are no words to describe how amazing it was,” Tamarra said about winning the Dream Wedding. “I couldn’t believe it because it felt so surreal. It’s one of the most exciting feelings.” She made her way to the front of the auditorium to meet Beth Pallett of Engaging Events, the wedding coordinator of the OBWA Dream Wedding Giveaway. Beth, who had already taken many steps in planning the Dream Wedding, was excited to meet Tamarra as well. “I think it’s interesting when I’m putting the wedding together to think, ‘I’m planning their wedding right now; who will it be?” Beth said. “I’ve been so lucky to have a couple who is so appreciative, so deserving.” From that day, there would only be eight months to plan the perfect wedding. This sounds like a short amount of time, but Tamarra felt no pressure. “I had a great team, and they made it seem effortless,” she said. Beth expressed that she wanted it to be a true dream wedding for Ray and Tamarra. “They’re the nicest couple, and I wanted them to have everything they wanted,” she said. Tamarra’s vision for the wedding was to have a tropical feel and to incorporate her home country of Jamaica. Beth transcended on this idea and worked with many vendors to create a traditional Nags Head style meets cool, casual Caribbean—a magnificent mix of two beaches. Even with all the excitement of winning and starting to plan her dream wedding, Tamarra was given yet another terrific surprise. New York’s Kleinfeld Bridal, the largest selection of wedding dresses in the world, home of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress, agreed to donate $1,500 toward a wedding dress for Tamarra. Tamarra chose a Maggie Sottero diamond white A-line gown featuring a sweetheart neckline with princess seams in organza and a chapel length train bursting with extravagant ruffles. etting married on the Outer Banks wasn’t a question seeing that we are both locals. I came here four years ago and fell in love with the Outer Banks; Ray on the other hand was born in Manteo. The Outer Banks, with its beautiful beaches, awesome landscape and history makes this location one in a million. On a cold Sunday in January, a friend of mine and I went to the expo on the last day. I had no idea how much work was put into a wedding until I was at the expo. I started to wonder how I was going to do all of these things. Each vendor has something unique to offer each bride. So my thought for the day was to take my time and relax, (which did not happen). After a day of visiting vendors, talking to so many people and trying to figure out my color scheme, flowers and food, there were so many visions swimming in my head. I was very happy to have Ray there. At least he could help me make some decisions. It was time for the fashion show and afterward they would announce the Dream Wedding winner. We all sat inside and watched a great show, and that is when they announced my name. I could not believe it. I asked if they could repeat the name, and that is when they called my name again. It became real when Benny, a representative from the Outer Banks Wedding Association, was doing an interview with us. I knew for sure that we had won! A couple weeks later, Ray and I met with our wedding coordinator, Beth Pallett and a group of individuals we would be calling our “wedding dream team.” While the planning was taking its time, we knew for sure how lucky we were. A couple days later, Beth told me that I would be getting my dress from Kleinfeld. I have seen more than a couple episodes of Say Yes to the Dress, which is one of my favorite shows! Seven months later, Ray and I were surrounded by our family and friends at the new Jennette’s Pier. Our florists designed a beautiful display to complement the setting. Shortly after we said our vows, we went outside to take pictures on the beach. (Due to rain, we had to have the ceremony inside the pier). After taking some great pictures, we went back inside. There we had the intimate and elegant reception that we both hoped for. The dinner was outstanding, and we danced and took pictures all night. We said our goodbyes to our guests, and then it was off to Oasis Suites. There is nothing about that day that we would change. We realized how much time people had put in to ensure that we had our dream wedding. Looking back on this experience, we couldn’t be more blessed. Each of the vendors has left a lasting impression in our lives. In the years to come, we will have this story to tell our children. We are forever grateful to the Outer Banks Wedding Association for giving us the wedding of our dreams. Our wedding was unique because of my dress from Kleinfeld, the food, which was a combination of Jamaican and American cuisine, the location at Jennette’s Pier and the entire setting. The wedding was more than I ever dreamed it would be, with my favorite part being when I said, “I do!” My advice to brides is whether you are doing it big or small, take the time to enjoy the entire day because it goes by so fast. ❁

leading up to the wedding. Thanks to the Outer Banks Wedding Association, they tried sports such as hang gliding, inshore fishing, golf and a helicopter ride as well as a relaxing couples’ massage. Tamarra was given a bridal tea at Cypress House Inn, where she described the atmosphere as warm and hospitable. Finally the wedding was just a day away, and when it came time for the rehearsal dinner, friends and family gathered at Carolina Station Beach House to enjoy a feast that’s most appropriate for the location—an Outer Banks steamer pot filled with red potatoes, corn, shrimp, crab, oysters, mussels and sausage cooked to perfection and served steaming hot. Guests enjoyed miniature cheesecakes for dessert before calling it a night and eagerly awaiting the next day’s events. Ray and Tamarra’s initial plans were to be married on the sandy beach with the serenity of the waves crashing behind them. However, the weather had other plans for them. Luckily, they were able to have an equally beautiful and romantic ceremony inside Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head in a gently sunlit room filled with green cymbidium orchids, purple vanda orchids and Peruvian green hydrangea. An arrangement of guitar and flute music filled the air as Ray’s groomsmen, sporting The Black Groove suits, escorted Tamarra’s bridesmaids, wearing satin dresses in a deep regency shade, with the exception of the maid of honor, who wore a soft lilac dress. The altar was adorned with palm trees and vases filled with orchids and bright tropical foliage. Chair markers were gorgeously laced with dendrobium orchids and hydrangea. In a tenderly sentimental ceremony, Tamarra and Ray exchanged vows in front of approximately 100 of their dearest family members and friends. After the ceremony, the wedding party headed out to the beach where the weather had brightened. sampled hors d’ oeuvres, listened to the graceful melody of a violinist and watched as the wedding party had their photos taken. Afterward, guests made their way back inside Jennette’s Pier to find their tables decorated with magenta and purple dendrobium orchids, green cymbidium orchids, bells of Ireland, white hydrangea, bamboo and tropical leaves along with floating candles in vases. Organza satchels containing colorful morsels of candy with almond centers were placed at each table setting for guests to enjoy. Everyone feasted on a grand dinner of prime rib, curried goat and white rice, Jerk Chicken, grilled vegetables and marinated mahi-mahi, a genuine blend of Jamaican fare and the delectable food treasures found in the Outer Banks. During the reception, guests danced to fun and upbeat rhythms as well as slower, romantic pieces. A popular addition to the reception was the extravagant candy bar where guests indulged in bits of their favorite sweet treats. Many participated in having their photos taken in a photo booth. “We loved the photo booth, and we were even happier when we saw how much fun our guests had with it,” Tamarra said. After toasts were given, it was time to cut the cake, a three-tiered masterpiece entitled Show Stopper. This signature creation is made from freshly squeezed lemon, lime and key lime juices basted into each layer of lime cake batter. Another cake layer was rich chocolate filled with creamy chocolate ganache. This dreamy confection was decorated with amethyst ribbon and flowers. As the night was coming to an end, friends gathered along the pier overlooking the Atlantic Ocean to bid their farewells to the happy couple. Ray and Tamarra stayed the night at Oasis Suites where they sipped champagne and ate chocolate covered strawberries. Looking back, Tamarra says there’s nothing she would have changed about the wedding. “It was everything and more than we could have hoped for,” she said. “The best part about getting married on the Outer Banks is being part of a beautiful and breathtaking place and having our family and friends to share it with us.” ❁

The Outer Banks Offers Many Options For Weddings With Spectacular Settings | By Kip Tabb

here is a well-founded pride with the beauty of the Outer Banks’ shoreline— postcard-perfect beaches that offer extraordinary settings for couples to exchange their marriage vows. However, not every Outer Banks wedding takes place on the beach. For some couples other settings are better suited for who they are or what they want in their wedding and at times these options may seem overwhelming. A magnificently restored art nouveau mansion, on the grounds of the Whalehead Club in Corolla is a well-known site on the sound for a wedding. Spectacular sunsets, meticulously maintained grounds and professional staff have made this a popular off-the-beach place to exchange vows. “There is just no place like it,” says event coordinator Kerri Catrino-Nason of The Proper Setting. “It’s right on the sound. There’s live oak everywhere. Beautiful architecture. There are so many places for photos. The sunsets are just spectacular there.” Other facilities are also highly regarded. In Avon, on Hatteras Island, Koru Village has built a very welldeserved reputation for catering to their guests’ needs. The Koru Village offers complete services, including lodging, catering and event coordination. “We have an event home down in Frisco called the Love Boat,” Tatum Clements, assistant director of operations, says. “It’s on the sound, so it definitely gives you options. You can get married in the gazebo down by the water at sunset or use the house as a back-up plan for a beach wedding if the weather doesn’t cooperate.” Some other facilities may be immediately adjacent to the Outer Banks but not right on them. 318 Griggs Acres is in Point Harbor, not even five minutes from the Wright Memorial Bridge. “It’s perfect

for people who like being close to the beach but are not on the beach. It’s very picturesque,” Event Coordinator Dawn Church with Brilliant Weddings says. Located on Roanoke Island in the middle of the Outer Banks, Manteo also offers a wide variety of choices. 108 Budleigh is one option. It is only rented for the entire day so, families can operate on their own schedule throughout the day. “It’s a gorgeous space,” Church says. “It’s an option for people who don’t want to get married with their feet in the sand.” Some of the most historic and iconic symbols of the Outer Banks are the lighthouses that line its shores. The Currituck Beach Light in Corolla is immediately adjacent to the Whalehead Club. The other three lighthouses of the Outer Banks are part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The park service does have information available about weddings on the grounds of the lighthouses on the National Park Service website. The information is very helpful and in no way discourages weddings on park land. The view from the top of Jockey’s Ridge at Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head is spectacular, and weddings are allowed on its grounds. However, a permit is needed so be sure to contact the park office. Increasingly though, wedding coordinators and their clients are using event homes as an alternative to multiple locations for all the events associated with a marriage. Although an event home may not match some of the more unique settings for beauty, they are often in remarkable settings and offer some advantages to more traditional venues. “We have some wonderful event homes in beautiful settings that are perfect for an Outer Banks wedding,” George Bell, events coordinator for Resort Reality, says. Pointing out that many event homes are located on larger tracts of property, he adds, “They allow tent rentals if needed.” An event home is more than a rental property that the owner has declared will handle large crowds. These are houses that have been purposely built for large crowds or have had extra work done to strengthen the structure. “We have an engineer certify the decks and structure can handle the larger crowds,”

From the mammoth 23-bedroom Wild Horse located in the 4-wheel drive beach north of Corolla to a huge selection of smaller homes, the event homes may provide more intimate surroundings than other locations. “Weddings are family events,” Thibodeau notes. “Event homes offer the family a chance to be together in one place.” Because event homes are also multi-bedroom houses, Dawn Church considers them a money saving option for her clients in many cases. “The whole family can stay together in one place,” she says. “They don’t have to rent separate houses.” Additionally many event homes, especially the bigger ones, have been built with an eye for serving large groups of people. With kitchens capable of handling the needs of caterers and large open rooms and decks designed for significant numbers of guests, the event homes offer a simplified concept of planning for some couples. Certainly the event homes may simplify the Outer Banks wedding, but that’s a choice each couple will have to make. A wedding service on the beach is beautiful, but that may not be the first choice for everyone. And, with so many alternatives available, there is a guaranteed perfect setting for a perfect day. ❁

ver the last decade the Outer Banks has quickly become one of the premiere wedding destination locations on the East Coast. With the largest naval station in the world less than two hours away, military personnel are regular visitors to the Outer Banks. Deployments are constant in the lives of men and women in all branches of military service. Faced with an extended deployment, many couples may believe that they do not have time to plan the wedding of their dreams. But a short timeframe for planning does not have to translate into a small, “this is all we could pull together” wedding- in fact, it is quite the opposite. “Wedding planners have established relationships with area vendors and their expertise in the wedding planning field can sometimes reduce the time needed for planning and still provide their clients with the wedding that they have always wanted,” says Kelly. A wedding at the beach is also a perfect option for a couple that is experiencing marriage for the second time around. Many of these couples are trying to include their children into the big event. Incorporating a beach vacation into the festivities is a great way to start the foundation for a healthy blended family. A wedding planner can assist with finding the perfect event home that can double as a vacation spot for the newly-formed family.

“Many young couples are getting married in their later 20s and early 30s,” Marie Russell owner of Bordeaux Events points out. “They are established in their careers and have more money.” Couples who have established careers and greater financial resources generally have a very clear idea of what they want for their wedding. Instead of parents paying for everything, the couples are paying for the wedding themselves. Perhaps it is because their money is being spent, similar to Russell, Kelly has found that grooms, who traditionally have played a relatively minor role in planning a wedding, are becoming more involved in the planning process with genuine interest. “Several grooms that I have dealt with have started playing a larger role in the decision-making- and the key is they genuinely want to be a part of the process.” she says. A wedding on the beach might include fewer guests than a traditional wedding at home- but that isn’t always the case. The Outer Banks has venues that can accommodate upwards of 250 guests. Likewise, there are also venue options for wedding groups from 50 to 125 guests as well as more intimate settings. Wedding coordinators and event planners from Ocracoke to Corolla have at their fingertips a number of plans for a full spectrum of possibilities. The challenge of trying to organize an event from a distance is minimized when a wedding planner is on location and able to be your liaison on-site. “I had one (couple) who had been preparing for a large wedding at home and was over the stress of planning” Kelly says. “They were overwhelmed and knew that they couldn’t please everyone. So, in the end they opted for a more intimate ceremony at the beach-- it was sweet, romantic, and exactly what they wanted. We made it happen. That’s what we do!” A wedding is ultimately the beginning of a journey together. Because each story will be different, the beginning of the tale is up to the couple taking the journey to decide. Tips to Make Your Meeting with a Wedding Planner Productive To make your initial consultation with a wedding planner worthwhile here are some questions and suggestions to consider: • What is your budget? What areas of your budget are most important to you? • Which vendors are the most important? Do you want an all inclusive package or select your own vendors? • What is your time frame for planning, when is your wedding date? Is that date flexible? • Be familiar with the difference between a Day Of Wedding Coordinator and Full-Service Wedding Coordinator. The definition may vary slightly by individual wedding planners so ask for details. • Set up in-person or phone interviews with potential wedding planners. You will be spending a significant amount of time discussing details with your planner over an extended period of time so an interview will ensure that your communications styles pair up. • Use technology to assist you in communication with your wedding planner. Ask if they prefer communicating by email, by phone, Skype, or even FaceTime. Set up a system that works for you and your plan as far as status updates.

Helpful Tips On Overcoming Weather Obstacles from the Pros: “Try very hard to plan ahead with multiple backup plans,” George Bell, event coordinator, for Resort Realty says. “Weddings that are planned during the week can change to the next day or even two days later than planned. Many guests are in town so travel arrangements may be a little more flexible.” • Have a back-up inclement weather plan. (Tents are great backup plans when indoor space is not available.) • Consider planning wedding during the week for maximum flexibility • Consider purchasing wedding insurance. “Wedding insurance is a viable way for couples to protect their investment in their wedding day. There are several types of wedding coverage offered through individual insurance agencies. We highly recommend that couples look into wedding insurance,” said Veda Peters, president of the Outer Banks Wedding Association and owner of Cypress House Inn.

MAIN CATEGORIES FOR WEDDING INSURANCE Cancellation/Postponement Insurance: Protects the nonrefundable expenses incurred when the rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, wedding, reception or honeymoon, must be cancelled or postponed for certain reasons beyond your control. Cancellation due to serious illness or extreme weather is just a couple of examples of what is covered.

Personal Liability Insurance: A single personal liability policy may cover your rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, wedding ceremony, and reception. Many will include additional insureds for your event site. This may also include host liquor liability.

Hurricane Irene was an extreme example of Mother Nature reminding us of her strength. Not since 2003 has the Outer Banks experienced such an impressive storm. Unlike storms in the past, Irene did very little damage on the ocean front. This was an once-ina-lifetime scenario where the storm pushed a 4-10 foot (depending on Photograph By Dan iel Pullen Photograp location) wall of water into homes hy and businesses that had never seen flood waters before. Yet, despite this destruction, wedding vendors rose to the challenge to repair, restore, and reclaim their clients’ wedding dreams.

Within a week of the storm, a large portion of the Outer Banks was open and ready for tourists to return. This quick turnaround is a direct result of the timely and whole-hearted response by the Outer Banks community. In fact, the after-storm recovery process is an ingrained part of life for the Outer Banks resident. As Steve Nelson, owner of the Inn on the Pamlico Sound in Buxton states, “People have been rebuilding here for years. We’re accustomed to it.” After the storm, 108 Budleigh, a wedding and reception site in downtown Manteo, had nearly a foot of water inside, yet within less than a week the owners were open for business. “We had our first wedding the Friday after the storm. It was a real community effort,” said Susan Fearing, owner of 108 Budleigh. Lynette Sumner, owner of Aqua Restaurant and Spa in Duck had a

very similar story. While the restaurant itself sustained minor damages, a 75-person wedding party was scheduled for the following Saturday after the storm. “The day before I still didn’t have power,” Sumner recalls. Yet through hard work, determination, and incredible support from the wedding party, the venue was ready on time. The wedding went off without a hitch. And on Hatteras Island access to the Island was restricted because the road was severed in two places until mid-October when a new bridge and repairs to the road were finished. But even in these extreme situations businesses were flexible and prepared to do whatever they could to accommodate their wedding guests. Daniel Pullen of Daniel Pullen Photography has seen the effects of hurricanes many times. “For the most part, everyone who lives down here is prepared for it. We make adjustments,” he says. Visitors noticed and appreciated the adjustments. Kate Pullen, also of Daniel Pullen Photography, recalls a couple that were determined to come to Hatteras for their wedding regardless of the hardships. “I met a family at a local coffee shop who had travelled to the Island, bracing a long journey and two ferries, for an intimate Hatteras wedding,” Kate says. “Despite the long travel, they said their experience had been incredible, with helpful, flexible, friendly service, and the beach all to themselves. It was the wedding in paradise that they had envisioned—well worth the journey.” Ultimately, this story has and will always have two victors: the wedding professionals who have chosen to live at the edge of a continent and the people who have chosen to get married in such a dynamic and enchanting place. It is about the tight-knit community of the Outer Banks — a community that supports one another and goes the extra mile for our visitors. This community serves as the backbone for your wedding professionals, and those professionals are the people who make it their business to cater to you — our Outer Banks brides and grooms. It is best put by Susan Fearing, when she described how Manteo was “back in the swing” in such a short time. “It was really just small town America — everyone came together.”

FLORALS

JEWELRY A business who deals in the sale of jewelry, precious stones, watches, silverware or china, OR a person who designs, creates or repairs jewelry.

MUSICIANS & DISC JOCKEYS Live Musicians: Any business whose function is providing live (not pre-recorded) music including vocalists, instrumental and/or vocal ensembles, soloists, duos, trios, quartets, bands, orchestras, accompanists. NOT disc jockeys. Disk Jockey Services: Any business or individual that goes on site and provides recorded music and serves as the emcee for events.

OFFICIANTS & CHAPELS Officiants/Ministers: any person qualified and/or certified to legally perform wedding ceremonies in the state of NC, religious or civil. Chapels: any location capable of hosting a marriage ceremony, regardless of size. Site may or may not have a specific religious affiliation or a permanent officiant assigned to it.

PHOTOGRAPHERS Any business whose function is taking still photographs, regardless of format (film, digital, or combination) and providing those photos, retouched or un-retouched, to the bride and groom in some format (prints/album, disc, other digital media, etc.).

NORTH CAROLINA LAW the north Carolina age requirement is 18. if you are under the age of 18, you can be married as young as age 16, only with parental consent. in order to obtain a marriage license you will need a photo id and proof of social security. if you cannot locate your actual social security card, you may use anything with your name and social security number on it, such as a pay stub, tax return, or insurance papers. if either person is divorced, a divorce decree is required.
