Discover the history of Olde Towne
Founded in 1752, Colonel William Crawford planned a town for the ages with a main thoroughfare fit for a King, with a name just as regal: High Street. There are many things to see and do, such as experience your favorite band perform along the waterfront at the Portsmouth Pavilion, enjoy a five-star meal at one of our chef-owned restaurants, tour one of our many first class museums, and shop for that unique treasure at one of the many merchants that make up this wonderful place to live, work, and play. Enjoy a “First Weekend Celebration”, our monthly Flea Market or Saturday Farmer’s Markets during the growing season. Olde Towne boasts the largest collection of antique homes between Charleston, South Carolina and Alexandria, Virginia. As a celebrated military town, Olde Towne includes both the oldest operating US Naval Hospital and the first operational dry dock facility in the US, and holds the proud distinction of being an official US Coast Guard City.

P
ortsmouth is a small town in an urban setting where neighbors know and care about each other, civic leagues are active and community activities are on the rise. Olde Towne has the same walkable urban atmosphere that make places like Brooklyn, Georgetown and Savannah favorites along the east coast.
Our story began over 400 years ago when Captain John Smith first explored the land that would one day become Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1620, the site was recognized by John Wood, a shipbuilder, as a suitable shipbuilding location who petitioned King James for a land grant. In fact, the majority of our 400 year history stems from our maritime roots and our prime location on the Elizabeth River. Our riverfront town, known today as “Olde Towne” was originally ruled by the British and named after the thriving British seaport in England. Our first town streets were named after people and places from merry olde England. Even our river was named after Queen Elizabeth. In a single square mile, the Olde Towne Historic District contains one of America’s largest collections of architecturally noteworthy 18th and 19th century homes and churches. Join the Yorktown Schooners Alliance and Serenity and step back into history as you sail the York River past the battlefield where our country won its independence. Lend a hand at setting sail, look for dolphins and osprey, or relax with a beverage from our ship’s galley. For families, try the Pirate Adventure Cruise. Kids will join the pirate crew and help raise the sails, steer the schooner, tie a knot and fire the cannon. Both ships also available for private charters and special events. Sailing daily late March to early November. Advance reservations recommended. For schedule and tickets, visit www.sailyorktown.com. 844-724-5956. Continued on page A12
