ortsmouth is a small town in an urban setting where neighbors know and care about each other, civic leagues are active and community activities are on the rise. Olde Towne has the same walkable urban atmosphere that make places like Brooklyn, Georgetown and Savannah favorites along the East Coast.
Our story began over 400 years ago when Captain John Smith first explored the land that would one day become Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1620, a shipbuilder named John Wood recognized the harbor as a suitable location for shipbuilding and petitioned King James for a land grant. In fact, the majority of our 400-year history stems from our maritime roots and our prime location on the Elizabeth River (aptly named after Queen Elizabeth). Our riverfront area, known today as “Olde Towne” was originally ruled by the British and named after the thriving British naval seaport of Portsmouth, England. You can explore this national treasure through the Path of History Walking Tour, a selfguided tour that directs you to 45 homes, monuments and churches. THE HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH CHECK-LIST FRESNEL LENS At ten feet tall and 2,500 pounds, the Fresnel Lens began service in 1896 and is one of the few Fresnel lens lighthouses displayed outside of a museum. THE LIGHTSHIP PORTSMOUTH MUSEUM Lightships were navigation aids that began service in the early 1800's. The Lightship Portsmouth was built in 1915 and served for 48 years. Price is well versed in all things colonial and Portsmouth. Since 2002, Colonel Crawford & Company has offered Olde Towne Portsmouth Living History Walking Tours to great acclaim. Scheduled Tours last 75-90 minutes and leave from the lobby of the Renaissance Portsmouth-Norfolk Waterfront Hotel, 425 Water Street, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 8 pm from May through October. Named after the English naval port of Portsmouth, England, Olde Towne was laid out checkerboard style with 122 half-acre lots around its town square at High and Court Streets. Much like its counterpart in Savannah, Georgia, Portsmouth was laid out in a series of squares. Many were labeled to designate the desired use for the property (i.e. CHURCH, MARKET, PRISON). With help from the writings of Portsmouth historians and an 1851 map, the Portsmouth Heritage Initiative has placed granite footers at the corner of each intersection to commemorate each square’s historical significance.
