Prince William County
Welcome LETTER FROM PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY Prince William County is continuing our rise to national prominence. We are becoming a center of job creation and economic growth. During the last year alone, Prince William County saw private economic investment of $1 billion, the highest total in our history. This investment is creating hundreds of new high paying Leesylvania State Park jobs in Prince William County. We remain one of the wealthiest counties in the nation with a median household income of approximately $95,000. The county is maintaining our commitment to make transportation a priority, with the most ambitious local road building program in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Prince William County residents will soon begin to realize the benefits of the over $500 million in road construction projects currently underway. As a result of the county’s sound financial management and prudent infrastructure investments, Prince William County holds three AAA bond ratings. This is a status that fewer than one half of one percent of jurisdictions across the entire country enjoys today. These ratings have already saved Prince William taxpayers $30 million in future borrowing costs. Prince William County has again been named a Top 100 community for young people, due to our excellent schools and many activities available for youths in the county. I encourage you to visit the shops in the historic Town of Occoquan, or take advantage of the new exciting retail opportunities all over the county. Spend a weekend with family or friends exploring Prince William Forest Park and Manassas National Battlefield, or simply enjoy many of the recreational opportunities available in our county parks. I invite you to come back often as we continue to commemorate the Sesquicentennial through 2015. By the close of the Sesquicentennial, Prince William County will be in the heart of the Military Heritage Trail, with the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Quantico National Cemetery and the future Americans in Wartime Museum.
Sincerely yours, Corey Stewart, Chairman Prince William Board of County Supervisors

Towns & Cities BRISTOW
The majority of the Bristow Area was previously part of the Linton’s Ford Plantation, owned by the Linton Family from the 18th century. In 1894, the property was deeded to the Roman Catholic Church. The Linton Hall School was founded, for which the main road was named: Linton Hall Road.
Towns & Cities Looking for charming antique shops, cafes, restaurants, art stores and boutiques? Explore the many cities and towns that make up Prince William & Manassas. NOKESVILLE
DUMFRIES
The center of a farming community with cattle and dairy farms, Nokesville became a town and intermediate stop on the Orange & Alexandria Railway in 1865. From the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s, Nokesville was the location of a religious movement called the German Baptist Brethren, which became known as the Church of the Brethren. Later, in the 1950’s, it was cut off from passenger trains and remains a rural community today.
Dumfries, the largest town in Prince William County, was chartered in 1749. It is named for a town in Scotland from where a locally prominent merchant hailed. It grew in wealth and importance as a major tobacco port, that rivaled New York and Boston but soil erosion and silting of the port caused Dumfries’ demise. Today, Dumfries is known as the oldest continually chartered town in Virginia.
OCCOQUAN
GAINESVILLE
Gainesville was once a changing point for stagecoach horses on the Fauquier & Alexandria Turnpike. In 1852, the Manassas Gap Railroad reached the area and the stop became Gainesville. The town was a shipping point for grain, timber and cattle and remained a major cattle shipping point into the early 1960’s. During the Civil War, nearby Thoroughfare Gap in the Bull Run Mountains served as a path for soldiers to reach the First and Second Battles of Manassas.
HAYMARKET
Haymarket, in northwest Prince William, owes its location to an abandoned Indian hunting path which became Old Carolina Road. It was used by settlers as a route from Pennsylvania to the Carolinas. Haymarket grew around the intersection of Carolina and Dumfries Roads. It was burned by Union troops in 1862. Since then, the town has been revived with a collection of quaint restored buildings and shops.
MANASSAS
Known for Civil War history, Manassas also has a wonderful museum system and charming Old Town historic district, perfect for a day trip in Virginia. During the Civil War, the junction’s strategic importance led to the battles of First and Second Manassas (Bull Run). The county seat since 1892, Manassas was rebuilt after the Civil War and remained a small town for most of the 20th century. It became a city in 1975. 10

Occoquan is derived from a Dogue Indian word meaning “at the end of the water.” Located on the river, Occoquan was a natural site for water-borne commerce. By 1765, it flourished as an industrial settlement with grist mills and tobacco warehouses. The Merchant’s Mill was the first automated grist mill in the nation. It operated for 175 years until destroyed by fire. Although fire and river silting have caused hardships for Occoquan, the town has survived and thrived. Today, it serves as one of the top places to go in Virginia as a charming restored artist’s community with shops, outdoor dining, ghost walks and more.
QUANTICO
Rich in military history, Quantico is the only town in the U.S. that is completely surrounded by a Marine Corps Base. Quantico’s military tradition dates back to the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, when the area was used by Virginia Naval elements. The area also spent time as a resort community called “Potomac”. The town itself was incorporated in 1872, taking its name from a Douge Indian word meaning “by the large stream”. Today it is home to a notable Marine Corps Base, established in 1917.
WOODBRIDGE
Rich in history and natural beauty, Woodbridge offers a wide range of recreational and leisure opportunities. Woodbridge provides outdoor recreation enthusiasts access to both a state and national park, the Potomac river, and numerous hiking and biking trails. Woodbridge is also the place to be for shopping and dining with Potomac Mills directly off of Interstate 95 and numerous small shops and restaurants throughout the community.

September
DAY ONE: Join a guided ghost tour in Historic Occoquan to get a glimpse of an Indian who allegedly appears in a bathroom mirror at Occoquan Inn and talk to the merchants who have had merchandise strewn around by ghosts. After, wander the halls of Rippon Lodge, which is allegedly haunted by a child and someone who died in the home’s parlor after a dual. Today, some people say they have seen the child looking out the upstairs window.
October
DAY TWO: Get spooked at Weems-Botts Museum where Civil War soldiers are said to haunt the nearby cemeteries while a child, who still talks to ghost hunters in the voice of a little girl, haunts the home. Biography Channel’s “My Ghost Story” filmed here in the fall of 2012. Connect with Agnes who was executed at the Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre but allegedly, never left. People claim they have heard voices from the jail on site and seen faces in the windows. The television show “Ghost Hunters” filmed here just a few years ago.

Historic Sites
& Museums CONNECT WITH AMERICA’S HISTORY BY EXPLORING ONE OF COUNTLESS HISTORIC SITES.
Liberia Plantation
Stand where “Stonewall” Jackson earned his name at the Manassas National Battlefield Park or visit a former Civil War hospital at Ben Lomond Historic Site. Discover what it’s like to become a marine at the National Museum of the Marine Corps or tour the Manassas Museum in Old Town Manassas, which features permanent and rotating exhibits about Northern Virginia Piedmont History.
From 3,000 Acres to 360 Square Miles…
Settlement in Prince William County began in 1653, when the first land patent established 3,000 acres from the Occoquan River to Neabsco Creek. A 534-acre plantation was cut and became known as the George Mason plantation. It was here that the first public buildings were constructed and Mason’s “wood bridge” became the first land connection across the Occoquan River.
George Washington Slept Here, Really ...
What is believed to be the oldest home still standing in Prince William County, Rippon Lodge, was built on a scenic Woodbridge hilltop circa 1747, by Richard Blackburn. His friend, George Washington, visited often and stayed overnight at the lodge.
Our Roots are Across the Atlantic ...
Named for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and youngest son of King George II of England, Prince William County was formed in 1771; it was carved out of Stafford County and initially included what is now Loudoun, Fauquier, Arlington and Fairfax counties.
A Revolutionary Time ...
As a new nation was forming and asserting its independence, General George Washington and French General (Comte de) Rochambeau forged ahead with their troops through Prince William County on what is now known as the new King’s Highway walking trail. Their advance, during the final campaign of the American Revolution, eventually led to the defeat of the British forces at Yorktown in 1781.
A Call to Arms ...
In April 1861, a deadlier conflict erupted. Confederate soldiers were recruited on the Brentsville Courthouse lawn and on a hot July day in 1861, the sleepy railroad community of Manassas Junction found itself on the forefront of American history. During the Battle of First Manassas/Bull Run, the first major land battle of the Civil War, about 4,900 people were killed, wounded, captured or reported missing. Thirteen months later, the armies clashed once again. Under the command of General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, Confederate troops waited behind the unfinished Manassas railroad grade and surprised Union troops under Major General John Pope’s command. The Second Battle of Manassas had begun. Four times larger than the first, the second battle spanned two-and-a-half days and involved 120,000 men. Nearly 24,000 soldiers were wounded or killed. Today, their stories echo at Manassas National Battlefield Park. In October 1863, Confederate forces suffered a bloody defeat as they tried to cross Broad Run in pursuit of the Federal Third Corps on what is now Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park. 12
Today, the Prince William region consists of two incorporated cities Manassas and Manassas Park, and four incorporated towns Haymarket, Dumfries, Occoquan and Quantico. According to legend, the name Manassas was derived either from an Indian source or from the name Manasseh, a Jewish innkeeper at Manassas Gap. Manassas originated in 1852 at the junction of two railroads connecting Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. to the Shenandoah Valley and Richmond. Because of the bustling railroad, Manassas became the heart of Prince William County and a small village evolved around the tracks in 1850. In 1975, Manassas became an independent city. What began as a subdivision in Manassas, Manassas Park became an independent city in June 1975 and was the last town in Virginia to do so before the Virginia legislature placed a moratorium on such action. Haymarket is home to an Indian hunting path, which became Old Carolina Road. Burned by Union troops in 1862, the town has been revived with a collection of quaint, restored buildings and shops. Chartered in 1749, Dumfries is Virginia’s oldest, continually chartered town. Dumfries was once the second leading port in Colonial America, receiving tobacco from the upland. Derived from the Dogue Indian word meaning “at the end of the water,” Occoquan was a natural site for commerce. In 1765, it flourished as an industrial settlement with grist mills and tobacco warehouses. For 175 years, Occoquan was home to the first automated grist mill in the nation until

Ben Lomond, an antebellum farm, served as a hospital for wounded soldiers during the Civil War. Built in 1837, the walls still bear the authentic signatures of soldiers, marking their stay as they recovered from battle wounds. The grounds are also home to one of the nation’s largest, public, antique rose gardens and one of the few remaining public slave quarters in Northern Virginia.

Two important Civil War Battles unfolded here: the Battle of Kettle Run on August 27, 1862 and the Battle of Bristoe Station on October 14, 1863. The 133-acre site is open daily, with interpretive events scheduled regularly.
DAY ONE: Stand where “Stonewall” Jackson earned his nickname and discover the stories of the people who fought in the infamous battles that unfolded here. Enhance your history tour with a trip to Ben Lomond, a plantation turned Civil War hospital, and handle the tools doctors once used to treat patients. DAY TWO: Explore Old Town Manassas and the Manassas Museum, which interprets Northern Virginia Piedmont history through artifacts, documents, videos and images. Visit the Old Manassas Courthouse, the site of the 1911 Peace Jubilee, then venture just outside Old Town to Mayfield Earthwork Fort, which Confederate troops used to defend the vital railroad lines at Manassas Junction. DAY THREE: Explore Leesylvania State Park where history and nature unite. This park was once home to Henry Lee III, a Revolutionary War hero and father of Civil War Confederate General Robert. E. Lee. Fish, canoe or hike to a scenic overlook to see the remains of a Civil War Confederate gun battery. Experience boot camp and test your shooting skills at the laser rifle range at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, then continue your trip through history at the Weems-Botts museum in Dumfries. Home to Parson Mason Weems, biographer of “The Life of Washington,” visitors can learn the true story behind the tale of the cherry tree.

AN AFRICAN AMERIC HISTORY Discover the rich African American history in Prince William and Manassas through a tour of unique sites that help tell the stories from our past. DAY ONE: Explore Lucasville, the only restored, interpreted African American schoolhouse in Northern Virginia. This one-room school was built solely for African American children in 1885. The interactive site allows visitors to write on chalkboards and read the books used more than 100 years ago. Connect with the ghost of a former slave held at the Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre jail. Thirteen executions were recorded at the jail in the mid-1800’s, 12 of which were African Americans. One runaway slave was killed after he allegedly tried to burn his way out of the jail. Evidence of a fire is still visible in the beams of the building. DAY TWO: Walk through the five-acre Industrial School & Jennie Dean Memorial Park dedicated to the Manassas Industrial School for Colored Youth. Founded by former slave Jennie Dean, the school was one of the few sources of higher education in Northern Virginia for African Americans. Step inside one of the few remaining public, furnished slave quarters in Northern Virginia at Ben Lomond Historic Site. Sit on a reproduction slave’s bed and learn about slave life. Also visit the plantation’s home, which served as a Civil War Hospital. Graffiti from soldiers is still visible in the house.

DAY ONE: Take a ride down the Occoquan River aboard a Miss Rivershore pontoon boat. Learn the history of the area while watching for eagles, herons and other wildlife. Tours are offered weekends or weekdays by appointment. After your boat ride, explore the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Situated at the confluence of the Potomac and Occoquan rivers, the refuge is home to 200-plus species of birds, 600 species of plants and 65 species of butterflies. The 43-acre site includes one of the oldest homes in Prince William County, formal gardens and walking trails that provide stunning views of the Potomac River. DAY TWO: Enjoy Leesylvania State Park, which was once home to Henry Lee III, a Revolutionary War hero who fathered Civil War Confederate General Robert. E. Lee. Situated on a peninsula bordered by the Potomac River and Neabsco and Powells creeks, Leesylvania is known for its excellent fishing, beaches and canoe opportunities. Fish for trout, catfish and perch by boat or by land on a 300-foot fishing pier. Starting Saturdays in May, cruise along Powells Creek on a guided canoe tour where you can spot blue heron and an active beaver dam. Take a break to enjoy the onsite café then tackle the new fitness trail. The roughly two-mile trail includes different stations where people can focus on balance, strength training, cardio work and stretching. Continue to Prince William Forest Park, which boasts the largest green space in the Washington D.C. region and 8,000 years of human history. While at this park, walk or bike some of the 40-plus miles of trails and discover some of the 150 historic structures on the property. Spend the night at the park in your own tent or rent a rustic cabin. Built in the 1930s, the cabins were once used by the office of strategic services during World War II.
