Welcome If your idea of entertainment is shopping, you’re in luck. Choose from dozens of outlet malls, hundreds of shops and thousands of bargains. Find everything from designer brands to handmade crafts, beautiful art to unique holiday decorations. Be sure to check out the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community, the largest group of independent artisans in North America. The 8-mile loop of studios and galleries allows visitors to watch as artisans create their wares. Visitors can look forward to a brand new option for shopping, restaurants and places to stay at The Island in Pigeon Forge. Take an unforgettable ride on the 200-foot-tall Great Smoky Mountain Wheel, a spectacular Ferris wheel that features an amazing light display. Watch an incredible water spectacle at the multi-million dollar show fountain complete with vibrant colors and magnificent displays of water bursting through the air. The Island also provides some of the best shopping and dining options around. New to Pigeon Forge this year is the allowance for liquor drinks at local restaurants and bars, no longer limiting guests to beer and wine. The area passed a local “liquor by the drink” law, which will give visitors more options for imbibing. This law is attracting more restaurants to Pigeon Forge, expanding the already-incredible dining options that are available. Of course, one of the most popular ways to spend a day or night in the Smokies is to sit back and be entertained. Top quality shows, from comedy to country, gospel to Elvis, are constantly exciting audiences. Find breakfast variety shows, religious spectacles, gospel harmonies, supper shows and more. In addition to all of the daily entertainment, the Smokies hosts several events and festivals throughout the year. The future holds many new exciting opportunities for events due to the opening of The Leconte Center in Pigeon Forge, a 232,000-square-foot mulitipurpose facility in the heart of the Smokies. LeConte will hold an exhibit hall of 100,000 square feet that’s ideal for large assembly events, trade shows and competitive events. LeConte Center is scheduled to open September 2013. As you can see, the Tennessee Smokies is never lacking in things to do. So get out there and enjoy your stay! We know you’ll be coming back for more.

Where History Merges With Adventure

Welcome to the Tennessee Smokies

Welcome to the Tennessee Smokies—where extraordinary nature and world-class entertainment combine to become one of the nation’s best destinations year round. Families and couples alike will find the region overflowing with things to do—from hiking the Great Smoky Mountains to dancing to live music, riding Dollywood’s many roller coasters and enjoying an all-day shopping spree. Here, adventures wait for you around every corner. Across the region, there is a great pride in the history and heritage of the mountains. On a land once inhabited by Cherokees, the Smoky Mountain region has been witness to conflicts between Native Americans and settlers, as well as Union and Confederate soldiers. But throughout the years, the community has fostered their mountain heritage above everything else, which is reflected in the culture, museums, music and theater across the region. So come see what the locals are so proud of—the beautiful and majestic Great Smoky Mountains. The national park, created in 1934, was once a haven for the logging industry. In fact, timber was the main economic engine of the area. But intervention came just in time—only 20 percent of the forest remained uncut at the time of the park’s inception. Now, tourism has replaced timber, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the country, beating even Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. Straddling the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, the park offers a worldrenowned natural landscape with endless forests, an awe-inspiring diversity of plants and animal life and the quiet beauty of the ancient mountains towering above. The park is the heart of the Smoky Mountain region, and visitors and locals find solace in the serene wilderness, where the freeway buzz and cell phone chimes can be left far behind. Of course, surrounding areas are also teeming with ways to enjoy the outdoors, such as white water rafting on the Pigeon River, horseback riding, underground caverns, fishing and much more. This region is also full of many attractions that don’t involve nature but still have that Smoky Mountain spirit. Dollywood, the famous theme park owned by legendary country singer Dolly Parton, offers the thrill of roller coasters paired with unbeatable live entertainment and events. The music, crafts and food around every corner echo the cherished heritage of the Smokies.

You’ve Never Had Dinner Like This Before! Nothing is more important for Dolly Parton than family. And you’re all family when you visit Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede in Pigeon Forge! You’ll be welcomed with a warm smile, treated to a delicious four-course feast, and entertained with a rousing mix of down-home humor, lively music, galloping horses, and a little friendly competition. Dixie Stampede has been thrilling visitors for more than 25 years and has served more the 28 million guests. The most popular Dinner Attraction in the Smokies, it seats 1,100 people per show. During peak season, the Dixie Stampede will perform its unique pageantry of history, comedy and patriotism up to five times per day. The show has something for people of all ages, young and old, families with children, honeymoon couples, even grandparents. Visiting the Dixie Stampede has become a family tradition each year for thousands of guests. One of the show’s biggest fans happens to be its Marketing Director, Jim Whaley. “I have been coming to the Dixie Stampede since I was a senior in high school. My family loves the place now as much as I do.” Just like all the returning guests, Whaley loves those exciting show elements that thrill the audience; Mountain Ruckus and their great music in the non-alcohol Dixie Belle Saloon, the daring trick riding, horses that jump through a ring of fire, the exciting competition, the comedy, beautiful Belles of the Ball, and especially the friendly rivalry between the North and the South. The show’s main stars are their 32 Magnificent Horses, but the show is not entirely about horsemanship. New in 2013, Dixie has brought back their World Famous Racing Ostriches! Add in the Fabulous Four Course Dinner Feast, and you have an experience you’ll never forget! Christmas at Dixie Stampede runs in November and December. A moving nativity scene, complete with 3 wise men atop live camels, will stir your heart and get you ready for the holidays. And you don’t want to miss “The Magic of Toys!” The Dixie Stampede is high-powered entertainment at its best from the first charge of those magnificent horses ant their talented riders through the grand finale as Dolly sings her proud tribute “Color Me America.” If you haven’t visited the Dixie Stampede before, it’s time you did and started your own Dixie Stampede Family Tradition!

I know the feeling. I’m here almost every day, yet I’m still surprised to find things I’ve overlooked. Of course, Mary Kellogg-Joslyn, our dear ship’s admiral, could be responsible for that. Admiral Mary knows how children think and what holds their interest. Her 20 years as a Disney senior executive might just have something to do with that. Preserving the Past

Exploring the history of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park “Battle-Axe” McGraw stands in the Tennessee forest, gripping the rugged handle of his single-man crosscut saw. He stares at the 36-inch blade that will soon sink its 39 rigid teeth into the bark of the giant log that sits before him. The red patches of his flannel shirt are reflected in the red fire in his eyes as he glares at his opponent, “Dead-Eye” Dawson. The sound of a whistle shrieks in the air, signifying the beginning of a mighty challenge where these two men battle their forces of strength, endurance and skill. McGraw knows that the secret to beating his competition is keeping the saw as level as possible so that the teeth don’t catch the wood. Through the corner of his eye, he can see that Dawson’s blade has become stuck. McGraw gives his saw one last thrust as the severed block falls to the ground. He triumphantly holds his saw in the air as he looks over at Dawson who seems to be in a bit of physical and prideful pain. They don’t call this saw the “misery whip” for nothing, and McGraw certainly didn’t get the nickname “Battle-Axe” by practicing with pruners. It was this day—June 20, 1908—that “Battle-Axe” McGraw became known as the toughest lumberjack in the Smokies. continued on page 24

This legend is reminiscent of watching ESPN athletes compete at the Lumberjack Feud dinner and sporting event in Pigeon Forge, but these shows are more than just entertainment; they’re inspired by real history of the Tennessee Smokies. These battling lumberjacks pay homage to a long-lasting culture of loggers that made a living and a way of life on the land that’s now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. From 1901–1939 the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was swarming with lumberjacks working for the Little River Railroad and Lumber Company in Townsend. At that time it was one of the largest companies in the Smoky Mountains, providing more than 560 million board feet of timber and building more than 150 miles of railroad through the mountains. The company was also a main source of income for the thousands of workers it employed over the years. These lumberjacks spent their days sawing loads of timber along the roughest and steepest terrain this country has ever known using traditional and mechanical methods to provide enough lumber for America’s high demand at the time. Logging was all that these men and women knew. The industry had been passed down for generations of ancestors, and it was the best way they knew to provide food and shelter for their families. Over time people began to view the area as more than a source of lumber; they began to see it for the natural beauty of the mountains. As other parks in the country were flourishing as a result of President Woodrow Wilson’s establishment of a National Park Service in 1916, Tennessee residents felt that their beautiful home, the Southern Appalachian Mountains, was also deserving of its own national park. Eventually the Little River Lumber Company sold 76,000 acres of land to the park. Soon other lumber companies did the same. In 1934 the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was formed by Congress, and in 1940 it was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This proved to be unfortunate to the mountain people, who were required to leave the area for meager compensation and search of new homes and sources of income. Today their ancestors continue to share the stories of the logging industry and lumberjack culture, and they still identify themselves as mountain people. The best way to get a true perspective of this history is to see it up close for yourself at the Lumberjack Feud, or if you want a glimpse of the precious land that inspired a complete change of history, visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and discover why it is now America’s most visited national park.

Ways to Explore the Park

E Auto Touring

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park encompasses more than 800 square miles of rustic mountain ranges and is one of the most pristine natural regions in the east. An auto tour of the park offers a variety of experiences including panoramic views, tumbling mountain streams, weathered historic buildings and mature hardwood forests stretching to the horizon.

E Biking

Ride through Cades Cove on a misty summer morning for a truly memorable way to experience the park. Bicycles can travel on most roads within the park. However, due to steep terrain, narrow road surfaces and heavy automobile traffic, many park roads are not well suited for safe cycling.

En route to the National Park Just minutes from the hustle and bustle of Pigeon Forge is the picturesque area of Wears Valley. Leave the busy parkway at traffic light number 3, and head south toward Townsend. Enjoy the drive through this scenic community situated in the valley known as Wears Cove. The Valley runs parallel to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and is home to countless unique shops and Mom n’ Pop restaurants. If you can’t find it in Wears Valley, you don’t need it. If you are in search of antiques and made-inTennessee items, stop in any of the stores scattered along the picturesque drive. You are sure to find the perfect memento of your visit to the Smoky Mountains. Hungry for a little home cookin’? Barbecue from roadside smokers, scratch-made biscuits and farm fresh cuisine can be found around every curve. You can even find authentic Russian cookin’ and a Mexican café. You are sure to dine with the locals if you stop in for a quick bite. If you need a break from the crowds or are heading to Cades Cove take some time to enjoy the serenity and seclusion of Wears Valley.

Supplies for Your Favorite Crafts

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has about 2,115 miles of streams within its boundaries and protects one of the last wild trout habitats in the eastern United States. The park offers a wide variety of angling experiences from remote, headwater trout streams to large, cool water small mouth bass streams.

Known as the “Peaceful Side of the Smokies,” Townsend is a quiet mountain community that sets a change of pace from the rest of the Smoky Mountain region. Just miles away from the bustling towns of Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Townsend is the quintessential Appalachian town, full of rich heritage and surrounded by breathtaking nature. Townsend lies in the beautiful Tuckaleechee Cove, a mountain valley at the border of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In fact, Townsend is one of just three main gateways to the National Park. With such convenient access to the Smoky Mountains, Townsend is popular for outdoor enthusiasts. From biking and hiking to golfing and fishing, there is an endless number of ways to enjoy the outdoors around Townsend. The Little River descends from the mountains into the heart of town, making it a natural gathering place for recreation. The clean and clear mountain waters are used often for swimming, fishing, kayaking and tubing. One such popular spot for water fun is known as The Townsend Y. This swimming hole is located where the Little River and the middle prong of Little River join. It’s easy to access and widely known as a fantastic spot for families to swim, sunbathe or enjoy a picnic along the sloping hills. While the surrounding nature looks so pristine and untouched, this beautiful valley has actually been inhabited for thousands of years. In fact, evidence of inhabitants as early as 10,000 years ago was unearthed at a recent archaeological dig. Adding to that long history is a rich Appalachian heritage and the thriving logging industry of the past. Visit the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center to learn about and celebrate the culture and history of the Smokies in the 1800s. The museum displays artifacts and highlights the major periods in the region’s history, all the way from 3000 B.C. to 1930. Discover artifacts related to hunting, pottery, foodways, ceremony, games, medicine and trade of the Native Americans that once inhabited the lands. Learn about the pioneer life by stepping back in time to view some of their vehicles and tour the buildings where they worked and lived. At one time the majority of folks in the Tennessee Smokies were employed by the Little River Railroad and Lumber Company, one of the largest commercial lumber operations

Townsend in the Smokies. From 1901 to 1939 the company built more than 150 miles of railroads in the Smoky Mountains and sawed more than 560 million board feet of timber. Of course now this land is known as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but visitors can still travel back in time by visiting The Little River Railroad and Lumber Company Museum, dedicated to preserving the heritage of this grand company. The museum, located in Townsend, collects and preserves the history of the companies and people in this region. Even more history lies underneath the surface at Tuckaleechee Caverns, a milelong cave system that’s known as the “greatest site under the Smokies.” Estimated to be between 20 and 30 million years old, the caverns tell the story of how the Cherokee Indians used this area as a hiding place before they were discovered in the mid-1800s. The caverns soon became a place where folks would go to cool off as they did their chores and a resting place for summer naps. An excellent way to combine recreation and history is to take a ride on the historic bike trail, an 8-mile route right through Townsend. Grab a brochure at the Townsend Visitors Center and then follow the markers—they point out historic sites and explain important historic periods. Townsend is also adjacent to Cades Cove, a oncethriving mountain community built in the 1800s. Today, an 11-mile driving loop takes visitors back in time as they explore a working grist mill and other historical buildings and churches. Aside from its gorgeous nature, Townsend is the perfect mountain town in which you can spend a peaceful day. Browse the town’s charming shops, art galleries and antique stores where you’ll find one-of-a-kind items, mountain-style crafts, original art and sweet Southern hospitality with a smile. When you need a little energy you’ll find a plethora of quaint cafes and eateries dotting the streets of Townsend. Whether you’re in the mood for something tastefully healthy, purely Southern or eclectically inspired, you’re sure to find a restaurant to fit your style and lift your spirits. No matter where you want to explore during your vacation, the quaint town of Townsend is the perfect place to stay. Choose from many types of accommodations—cabins, hotels and bed and breakfasts abound across the landscape as do campgrounds. Whether you come for the bounteous nature, the rich history or the charming aspects of this quiet mountain town, Townsend will leave an impression on you that’s as deep as the coves and as high as the mountains. Come to see what’s waiting for you in this valley of paradise.

incredible activities such as pony or horse rides on wellmaintained trails. Plan to make new friends on the Big Rock Ponderosa Dude Ranch. Enjoy a peaceful horseback ride along the mountain, and stop for a picnic along the way. Also at the ranch, the family can visit friendly animals such as chickens, goats, ducks, rabbits and a pony at the petting zoo, and you’ll have a fun opportunity to feed a llama and some emus. Try your hand at fishing in an abundant pond that’s stocked with bass, blue gill and crappie. The pole and bait are supplied, so just bring yourselves and be ready for fun! Davy Crockett Riding Stables features more than 15 miles of trails with breathtaking views. This family-owned business takes great pride in offering award-winning, personalized service that’s tailored to each individual rider. Plus, they offer the best selection of Tennessee walking horses and kids’ horses around! Five Oaks Riding Stables is home to 60 beautiful horses and offer its visitors 70 acres of park trails. Take an animal friend with you as you gaze across the boundless beauty of this lush land and bond in the surroundings of nature. How

would you like a little history mixed in with your route? While on the trail, you may encounter the remnants of an authentic moonshiners’ still! Get a feel for the Appalachian Mountains history with this fascinating, yet peaceful ride. ADRENALINE-PUMPING PARADISE There are those who are born with a natural sense of adventure, and it’s these people who look to the Smokies as a place to go wild and really let the adrenaline pump through their veins. One activity in particular that has gained immense popularity among thrill seekers is zip lining. CLIMB Works Canopy gives their guests a bird’s eye view of what makes the Smokies so unique by taking them on a fun four-wheel journey to the top of the mountain, and once they take that first step onto the beautifully constructed tour, their feet won’t touch the ground—for the next 2 ½ hours! Daredevils will have a chance to explore as they zip over ravines, streams, trees, wildlife and gorgeous views of the National Park. Adventure Park Zip Lines offer nine lines that range from 450 to 2,500 feet and allows guests to travel through the air at up to 50 miles per hour! Imagine being suspended in the air on a cable as gravity provides the running force to swoop you through the air among the treetops. Highly trained guides will explain the art of zip lining and teach you everything you need to know about staying safe and having fun. Legacy Mountain Zip Lines are the first eco-friendly zip line experience available in this area, and they’re conveniently located in the heart of Sevierville. You’ll love this exhilarating ride that glides you along 400 acres of land past unprecedented views of the historical Pinnacle and majestic Mount LeConte. Visit the Smokies’ biggest zip line course at Smoky Mountain Ziplines, featuring an unparalleled 24 lines! Four side-by-side super zip lines are ready to rock your world. At 800 feet in length and 100 feet high, it’s sure to be a ride to remember! At Next To Heaven, visitors can experience 45 acres of some of the best scenery in the Smoky Mountains. Soar over it all on one of Next to Heaven’s incredible zip lines. Harness up and glide through the air on this action-packed undertaking that takes you over the trees and mountains with breathtaking views of Wears Valley. continued on page 35

Family Adventures continued from page 30

To combine zip lining action with nature’s most gentle creatures, visit Jayell Adventures. Book a combination horseback and zip line venture to get the best of both magnificent worlds. Their 4-mile riding trail winds through more than 220 acres of pristine scenery, boasting views of North Carolina, Mount LeConte and Shield’s Mountain Fort. After your horseback ride, take a ride just below the blue skies. At Foxfire Mountain, choose from seven canopy tours, each featuring innovative technology that will allow a smooth stop every time. Start with an introductory 60-foot zip line, and progress to longer, higher and more amazing rides each time! Foxfire is also home to a swinging bridge—America’s longest swinging bridge in fact. Begin at the Foxfire base camp, and just over 400 feet later, you’ll be at Prosperity Mountain. In case you’re trying to figure in your mind how far 400 feet is, it’s one and a third times the distance from goal post to goal post across a football field—what an feat! Through Foxfire’s Bear Crawler ATV Tours, guests can embark on a rugged and exciting safari tour through the wilderness inside an open-air vehicle. Explore a Civil War Iron Mine, Lost Mine Falls and a 19th-century graveyard on this daring trip. Another great activity for those who are ready to face their fear of heights can be found at Flyaway Indoor Skydiving. If you’ve ever wanted to skydive without the terror of jumping out of a plane, this is the place to do it. Inside this vertical wind tunnel, you’ll break the bonds of gravity and feel what it’s like to actually fly! This experience is used as a popular training resource for sport skydivers, competition teams and military units, but it’s also a great source of fun for participants. If you’re in the mood for a little splash (or a head-to-toe soak), try the daring sport of white water rafting, one of the most thrilling workouts on the water! Featuring miles of heart-stopping rapids and family-friendly waters, it’s easy to see why the Pigeon River is one of the most popular whitewater rivers around. The Upper Pigeon features miles of class III and IV rapids that are perfect for an extreme rush. The Lower Pigeon, with gentle class I and II rapids, is great for ages 3 and up. Both the Upper and Lower sections are accompanied by gorgeous, unforgettable scenery. USA Raft offers routes ranging from mild to wild, each featuring the best guides and staff on the East Coast. For 20 years USA Raft has taken guests on edge-ofyour-seat journeys on the Upper Pigeon River and peaceful, scenic rides on the Lower Pigeon River. If you’re unsure about the wild memories you’ll make with USA Raft, just check with Kevin Michael Connolly—star of the Travel Channel’s popular TV show, “Armed & Ready.” Though he was born without legs, Connolly has set out to embark on some of life’s most breathtaking journeys, one of which was battling the daunting class IV rapids of the Pigeon River inside a custom cataraft with USA Raft as his guide. Crush some waves at Big Creek Expeditions in beautiful Hartford. Big Creek offers a quest on the Upper and Lower rivers and also an Adventure Package where guests can combine the best of both worlds for a full day of fun. Start with a whitewater expedition on the Upper Section, and finish with a relaxing float down the Lower Section. Enjoy a memorable riverside picnic in between the two excursions. At Outdoor Adventure Rafting, riders will experience a guided two-hour whitewater tour on the Upper Section that’s perfect for beginners or intermediate paddlers or a Lower Section tour for those who aren’t quite ready for the big rapids. Many groups raft both sections, but it’s also fine to split your group to allow each person to raft on the section they’re most comfortable with. After your trip (where you are guaranteed to be drenched) you’ll have the opportunity to change into dry clothes at Outdoor Adventure Raftings’ new changing rooms, located right on the river! With so many activities offered to visitors, the Tennessee Smokies may just be your new favorite spot to visit! All the attractions and adrenaline-pumping excitement will keep you flying high and enjoying your stay in this lush, natural environment. 2013/2014 | Tennessee Smokies | 35

Shopping continued from page 36 OUTLET SHOPPING Whether you have a keen appreciation for the finer things in life or just know how to spot a good deal, it’s easy to spend an entire day perusing the spectacular deals found in the huge selection of outlet stores here. Adorn yourself with high-end favorites offered at low-end prices on designer outfits, jewelry, purses and shoes. Bring new life to your home with the most sought after brands in kitchenware and entertaining. Finally, treat your body to a revitalizing makeover with a tremendous selection of top makeup brands, soothing body treatments and designer perfumes galore. SPECIALTY FINDS Of course you’ll want to have that one particular item that reminds you of the unforgettable memories made in the Smokies each time you look at it. Perhaps you’ll delight in an assortment of hand poured candles, a collection of music reminiscent of your visit or a piece of accent furniture that mimics the rustic feel of Tennessee. Maybe it will be a piece of jewelry, a set of vintage luggage or a personalized Christmas ornament that puts a warm feeling in your heart. You’ll find an incredibly varied assortment of gifts and goodies inside the adorable specialty shops here. MADE IN THE MOUNTAINS An especially admirable perk of shopping in the Smokies is that so many of the items found here are handcrafted by local artists and artisans. The Smokies are compiled of various craft guilds where talented artists can join together in revolutionizing the arts scene in Tennessee. Next time you purchase a hand-stitched quilt, a homemade bar of soap or a beautifully painted piece of art, you’re not only leaving with a quality piece of craftsmanship; you’re helping to support the local arts community, and that’s a purchase you can be proud of. EDIBLE TREASURES There are certain items that aren’t meant to last a lifetime, and with such an assortment of delectable confections found inside the shops here, some purchases may not last the car ride home. Bring a taste of the Smokies home with you by picking up a package of hand dipped chocolates, a jar of specialty barbeque sauce or preserves, an assortment of nostalgic candy or a bottle of Tennessee-made moonshine. Don’t forget to grab some extra gourmet goodies for your friends back home! No matter where you make your purchases, you’ll find amazing deals, one-of-a-kind gifts with a Smokies touch and, as always, a level of sweet Southern customer service you won’t find anywhere else.

Whether you’re shopping for a permanent home or looking to make a profitable investment, now is the ideal time to buy in East Tennessee Perhaps you feel so at home during your stay that you’re considering making the Tennessee Smokies a permanent home or possibly a secondary one. Buying a home here is easier than you may think—and the perks are better than you’d ever imagine. The first pleasant surprise that most homebuyers encounter is the affordable aspect of purchasing a home in the Smokies. Those who plan to finance their home will be delighted to learn that interest rates have been at an all-time low for several years. Jerry Sandifer, Broker at Tennessee Realty Pros, LLC explains that there may never be a more affordable time to buy. “If you are going to finance your home, then consider starting the process now,” he emphasizes. “We are seeing that interest rates are slowly beginning to rise.” Another valuable benefit is that Tennessee is one of the few states with no state income tax. This coupled with the low property taxes makes East Tennessee a desirable place to live. In fact, Tennessee is 1 of 5 states projected to have the highest growth rate for the next 20 years.

Decorating

Real Estate

Your Tennessee Home Once you find your perfect home, you’ll love decorating the new space to transform it into a cozy retreat. Here are a few tips on embellishing your mountain home in the Tennessee Smokies: •U se the landscape as your guide. Handcrafted wood furniture gives a comforting rustic feel to a mountain home, and many local crafters add in their own special details to each piece. •S hop for eclectic wares. With so many antique stores and boutiques, there are plenty of places to find that perfect accent piece that’s unique to your home.

Along with being an affordable purchase, many Tennessee homebuyers have discovered that purchasing real estate is a profitable investment, especially if you decide to rent it to out-oftowners. Thanks to the booming tourism industry in Tennessee, the real estate market has come back quicker than any other market. Each year this region receives between 10–12 million vacationers, meaning constant cabin rentals for visitors and lots of investment opportunities for buyers. “We’ve got tons of great entertainment on the parkway— theaters, amusement parks, Dollywood, Splash Country—endless things that you can do here,” Sandifer says. He notes that the biggest draw is the Smoky Mountains National Park, which is the most visited national park in the nation. The type of house you choose is based on personal preference and style. Of course cabins are the most requested construction type in the Tennessee Smokies for several reasons. “With over 30,000 cabins, most performing well in rental programs, investors have been jumping into the market for the past couple of years,” Sandifer explains. “With home prices finally bottoming out and record low interest rates, primary and secondary homebuyers are also highly motivated.” Purchasing a home—even if it’s a secondary home—is a big decision, so it’s important to feel comfortable with your real estate agent and communicate your preferences when discussing various housing options. This way you’ll ensure that the house you choose is the perfect one for you. The agents at Tennessee Realty Pros spend quality time with their clients discussing their goals and needs to develop their desires prior to showing a property to eliminate wasted time. “We have very experienced sales people and an extremely organized office staff,” Sandifer notes. “We can get the job done!”

• A classic stone fireplace or granite countertops in earth tones are ideal for a rustic chic interior design. •E xperiment with antlers. Many home decorators are using antlers in creative ways that range anywhere from chandeliers to wall sconces, candle holders, wreaths and even centerpieces. •B ring in the light. Start with oversized windows that allow a generous flow of natural light. To bring a contemporary style to your cabin, incorporate some white accents to brighten a room.

Just an hour drive from much of the Smokies, Knoxville is an exciting city in the center of a unique Southern region. To learn more about the town’s history, take one of the popular walking tours to historical homes and estates. Or trace your own family history at the East Tennessee History Center, which houses the Southeast’s largest resource for genealogical research and home of the First Families of Tennessee program. Home to more than 20 museums and seven historical houses, Knoxville is rich in culture and arts. With its own symphony, opera and ballet companies, alongside many theaters and live music venues, the arts are alive and well in Knoxville. Another cultural mecca, also known as the heart of the city, is Knoxville’s Market Square District. This charming downtown area is constantly booming with things to do and entertainers to see. On the first Friday of each month, the area is bustling with live musical performers and gallery walks, but unique activities can be found here all year long. Knoxville’s Market Square also has tons of fresh produce and foods from the East Tennessee region at the farmers’ market hosted on Wednesdays and Saturdays, May through November. Come for an early afternoon stroll to see live entertainment and interactive fountains that keep the square buzzing with visitors. After choosing the freshest produce, spend some time perusing the adorable shops that line the square. In fact, the whole city of Knoxville is known for its eclectic variety of shopping options. From locally-owned boutiques to spacious malls, there are many options when it comes to browsing and buying. Art collectors can meander about several intimate galleries, and fashionistas will love the designer stores and boutiques, while antiques aficionados could spend hours browsing the many elegant antique stores. While in the downtown area, make sure to visit The University of Tennessee campus. Visitors can see UT’s Neyland Stadium, the largest college football stadium in the Southeastern Conference as well as the third largest college stadium in the nation. The University is also home of the Lady Vols Basketball team, which has been a competitor for national titles for more than 30 years. The Lady Vols have participated in every NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Championship tournament since the NCAA allowed women’s sports in the 1981–1982 season. As an important reminder of the Lady Vols’ success, the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville celebrates and educates about the achievements of all levels of women’s basketball. The hall is also home to a rather sizable landmark; perhaps you’ve noticed the humongous basketball in the sky, which happens to be the world’s largest basketball, measuring 30 feet tall and weighing 10 tons.

Knoxville

Another significant landmark in Knoxville is the Sunsphere from the 1982 World’s Fair, which brought together more than 11 million visitors from all over the world in an effort to recognize the important issue of energy. Knoxville still holds pride in having the largest fair in the nation. Knoxville also has that big-city feel when it comes to dining. Whether you’re craving classic Southern cooking or some international flair, you’ll find it here. There are more than 600 restaurants in Knoxville, from totally casual family favorites to upscale romantic eateries. Spend some time outdoors at one of the newest attractions of the city—the Urban Wilderness project, which has opened more than 40 recreational trails and civil war sites, all tucked into a natural environment. The project has also created 10 parks, spanning 1,000 acres of woodlands and starting only two miles from downtown. Whatever you want to explore, from the basketball court to the boutiques and beyond, Knoxville is the place to go.

For many years the Smokies have been wellknown for their arts and crafts community. In fact, Gatlinburg is home to the Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community, an eight-mile loop with the largest group of independent artisans in North America. Needless to say, the region is a very hands-on community. Gradually throughout the years this craftiness has extended into their culinary community as well. The locally crafted beer, whiskey, wine and cuisine offered in the Smokies will make your visit a truly memorable experience.

Appalachia provides a wonderful selection of locally brewed beers. Many of these breweries offer all-natural microbrewed beers, which are created without the use of additives, preservatives or pasteurization. The beers are brewed from locally grown ingredients and handcrafted in small batches to provide the freshest possible taste. The microbrewing process is truly a work of art, and you will not want to leave Appalachia without experiencing what these breweries have to offer.

Dining continued from page 50 The area also boasts a rich history of whiskey making. Moonshiners during Prohibition especially loved the mountains as an inconspicuous place to distill their coveted contraband. What was once an undercover operation in the region is now a booming industry, with many different kinds of moonshine and whiskey available to adventurous visitors. The local distilleries craft their authentic spirits from locally harvested corn and cook, ferment and distill the alcohol themselves. The Smokies are also the ideal spot for crafting wine. Tennessee’s fertile soil and climate provide an excellent setting for the art of winemaking.

Locally grown grapes are harvested and crushed at these vineyards. Aging is also part of the art, and many local wineries age their wines in oak casks to give the wine a distinctly delicious oaky flavor. Though Tennessee doesn’t harvest its own coffee beans, there are many locally-owned cafes that take great pride in roasting their own beans. A fine example is Coffee & Company, Gatlinburg’s gourmet coffee shop and roaster. This small batch roasting company has chosen coffee beans from some of the finest growing regions such as Panama, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Africa and Indonesia. The folks at Coffee & Company roast a varied assortment of beans and sell them by the pound, half-pound or 12-ounce bag. Stop by their shop to get an enticing aroma of coffees from around the world. You can call ahead, and they’ll have your order ready for you when you arrive, or if you can’t wait that long, you can place an order online, and they’ll ship a bag right to you! The art of crafting fresh cuisine is alive and well in the Smokies. Once home to a plethora of immigrants from various countries, including Portugal, Ireland and Germany, the region has inherited a rich culinary tradition. Much of the area’s food is locally grown and harvested, including native foods

that were popular in the days of early settlement. These include suppone—a cooked mixture of corn meal, water grease and salt—and ramps, wild spring leek-type plants that are often fried with potatoes. Local farms and orchards contribute to much of the Smoky Mountain cuisine—a mix of traditional Southern comfort food and upscale dining.

Golfing

Golfing Smoky-Style

Enjoy a Full Variety of Golf Experiences and Unique Golf Vacations

The sport of golfing boasts a rich history that stems from the bounteous grasses of 15th century Scotland. However, it’s not necessary to travel to faraway lands to experience a game on gorgeous expanses of wellmanicured soil. From the lush green landscapes to the wide-open scenes of nature, Tennessee has many of the same views as the originating lands of Scotland, proving that it’s a great place to tee off and take control of the game. Courses in the Smoky Mountain area have taken advantage of the scenic beauty and the natural surroundings to create an experience that will be long remembered and a challenge for golfers at all skill levels as well. First is the challenge of playing on courses designed by greats like Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Edmund Ault.

See the Smoke...

Then there is the challenge of concentrating on the game while surrounded by the splendor and majesty of the Great Smoky Mountains. For those not accustomed to it, mountain golf presents its own unique challenges and thrills. “Reading the green,” for example, can be particularly difficult when the slope of the putting surface is severe, yet disguised by a mountainous backdrop. Addressing the ball and obtaining the proper stance can be challenging when the terrain is rolling and often rough. Golfers, particularly those with errant drives, often will find themselves with a lie going into a hill or with the terrain going away from them. The change in altitude on many mountain courses, many times from tee to green, can give golfers the thrill of a lifetime with drives that travel 300 yards and more to the fairway below. Even the crisp mountain air seems to allow the ball to travel farther and roll longer. The golf business is booming in the Smokies, with a wide range of golfing experiences, course designs and unique challenges. All set to golf but missing the gear? Not to worry! Visit one of the many pro shops for a wide selection of golf bags, balls, clubs and apparel from name brands like TaylorMade, Nike, Callaway and Titleist. Then head out to the course of your choice and swing like you mean it. Make sure to plan a couple rounds of golf during your visit. If you love golf, you’re going to love it even more here in the Tennessee Smokies.
