Welcome

to the Tennessee Smokies

Where extraordinary nature and world-class entertainment combine to create one of the nation’s best destinations year round.

F

amilies and couples alike will find the region overflowing with things to do—from hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains to dancing to live music, riding Dollywood’s many roller coasters and enjoying an all-day shopping spree. Here, adventures wait for you around every corner. Across the region, there is a great pride in the history and heritage of the mountains. On a land once inhabited by Cherokees, the Smoky Mountain region has been witness to conflicts between Native Americans and settlers, as well as Union and Confederate soldiers. But throughout the years, the community has fostered their mountain heritage above everything else, and this is reflected in the culture, museums, music and theater across the region. So come see what the locals are so proud of—the beautiful and majestic Great Smoky Mountains. The national park, created in 1934, was once a haven for the logging industry. In fact, timber was the main economic engine of the area. But intervention came just in time—only 20 percent of the forest remained uncut at the time of the park’s inception. Now, tourism has replaced timber, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the country, beating even Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. Straddling the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, the park offers a world-renowned natural landscape with endless forests, an awe-inspiring diversity of plants and animal life and the quiet beauty of the ancient mountains towering above. The park is the heart of the Smoky Mountain region, and visitors and locals find solace in the serene wilderness, where the freeway buzz and cell phone chimes can be left far behind. Of course, surrounding areas are also teeming with ways to enjoy the outdoors, such as white water rafting on the Pigeon River, horseback riding, underground caverns, fishing and much more. This region is also full of many attractions that don’t involve nature but still have that Smoky Mountain spirit. Dollywood, the famous theme park owned by legendary country singer Dolly Parton, offers the thrill of roller coasters paired with unbeatable live entertainment and events. The music, crafts and food around every corner echo the cherished heritage of the Smokies. If your idea of entertainment is shopping, you’re in luck. Choose from dozens of outlet malls, hundreds of shops and thousands of bargains. Find everything from

designer brands to handmade crafts, beautiful art to unique holiday decorations. Be sure to check out the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community, the largest group of independent artisans in North America. The 8-mile loop of studios and galleries allows visitors to watch as artisans create their wares. Visitors can look forward to a brand new option for shopping, restaurants and places to stay at The Island in Pigeon Forge. Take an unforgettable ride on the 200-foot-tall Great Smoky Mountain Wheel, a spectacular Ferris wheel that features an amazing light display. The wheel sits at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. As the centerpiece to the Island in Pigeon Forge, it stands as one of the tallest attractions in the Southeast! This ride provides riders an unparalleled view of the world famous Smoky Mountains in comfortable, all-glass gondolas that seat up to eight guests. Bring your family to experience Pigeon Forge like never before, and get an aerial view of one of our nation’s treasures. After a memorable ride on the Wheel, catch a show at the water fountain. An incredible water spectacle, this multi-million dollar show fountain is complete with vibrant colors and magnificent displays of water bursting through the air. The Island also provides some of the best shopping and dining options around. Scheduled to open in late summer 2014 is Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen. Look closely and you might catch a glimpse of Paula Deen serving Southern cuisine at its finest. New to Pigeon Forge last year is the allowance for liquor drinks at local restaurants and bars, no longer limiting guests to beer and wine. The area passed a local “liquor by the drink” law, which will give visitors more options for imbibing. This law is attracting more restaurants to Pigeon Forge, expanding the already-incredible dining options that are available. Of course, one of the most popular ways to spend a day or night in the Smokies is to sit back and be entertained. Top quality shows, from comedy to country, gospel to Elvis, are constantly exciting audiences. Find breakfast variety shows, religious spectacles, gospel harmonies, supper shows and more. In addition to all of the daily entertainment, the Smokies hosts several events and festivals throughout the year. The future holds many new exciting opportunities for events due to the newly-opened LeConte Center in Pigeon Forge, a 232,000-squarefoot multi-purpose facility in the heart of the “Center of Fun in the Smokies.” LeConte holds an exhibit hall of 100,500 square feet that’s ideal for large assembly events, trade shows and competitive events. As you can see, the Tennessee Smokies is never lacking in things to do. So get out there and enjoy your stay! We know you’ll be coming back for more.

The Past

Preserving the Past Exploring the history of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

attle-Axe” McGraw stands in the Tennessee forest, gripping the rugged handle of his single-man crosscut saw, staring at the 36-inch blade that will soon sink its 39 rigid teeth into the bark of the giant log that sits before him. The red patches of his flannel shirt are reflected in the red fire in his eyes as he glares at his opponent, “DeadEye” Dawson. McGraw knows that the secret to beating his competition is keeping the saw as level as possible so that the teeth don’t catch the wood. Through the corner of his eye, he can see that Dawson’s blade has become stuck. McGraw gives his saw one last thrust as the severed block falls to the ground. He triumphantly holds his saw in the air as he looks over at Dawson who seems to be in a bit of physical and prideful pain. They don’t call this saw the “misery whip” for nothing, and

J

McGraw certainly didn’t get the nickname “Battle-Axe” by practicing with pruners. It was this day—June 20, 1908—that “Battle-Axe” McGraw became known as the toughest lumberjack in the Smokies. Reminiscent of watching ESPN athletes compete, the Lumberjack Feud dinner and sporting event shows in Pigeon Forge are more than just entertainment; they’re inspired by real history. These battling lumberjacks pay homage to a long-lasting culture of loggers that made a living and a way of life on the land that’s now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. From 1901–1939 the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was swarming with lumberjacks working for the Little River Railroad and Lumber Company in Townsend, at that time one of the largest companies in the Smoky Mountains. These lumberjacks spent their days sawing

ust minutes from the hustle and bustle of Pigeon Forge is the picturesque area of Wears Valley. Leave the busy parkway at traffic light number 3, and head south toward Townsend. Enjoy the drive through this scenic community situated in the valley known as Wears Cove. The Valley runs parallel to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and is home to countless unique shops and Mom n’ Pop restaurants. If you can’t find it in Wears Valley, you don’t need it. If you are in search of antiques and made-in-Tennessee items, stop in any of the stores scat-

loads of timber along the roughest and steepest terrain this country has ever known using traditional and mechanical methods to provide enough lumber for America’s high demand at the time. Logging was all that these men and women knew. The industry had been passed down for generations of ancestors, and it was the best way they knew to provide food and shelter for their families. Over time people began to view the area as more than a source of lumber; they began to see it for the natural beauty of the mountains. As other parks in the country were flourishing as a result of President Woodrow Wilson’s establishment of a National Park Service in 1916, Tennessee residents felt that their beautiful home, the Southern Appalachian Mountains, was also deserving of its own national park. Eventually the Little River Lumber Company sold 76,000 acres of land to the park. Soon other lumber companies did the same. In 1934 the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was formed by Congress, and in 1940 it was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This proved to be unfortunate to the mountain people, who were required to leave the area for meager compensation and search of new homes and sources of income. Today their ancestors continue to share the stories of the logging industry and lumberjack culture, and they still identify themselves as mountain people. The best way to get a true perspective of this history is to see it up close for yourself at the Lumberjack Feud, or if you want a glimpse of the precious land that inspired a complete change of history, visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and discover why it is now America’s most visited national park.

tered along the picturesque drive. You are sure to find the perfect memento of your visit to the Smoky Mountains. Hungry for a little home cookin’? Barbecue from roadside smokers, scratch-made biscuits and farm fresh cuisine can be found around every curve. You can even find authentic Russian cookin’ and a Mexican café. You are sure to dine with the locals if you stop in for a quick bite. If you need a break from the crowds or are heading to Cades Cove take some time to enjoy the serenity and seclusion of Wears Valley.

The Peaceful Side of Known as the “Peaceful Side of the Smokies,” Townsend is a quiet mountain community that sets a change of pace from the rest of the Smoky Mountain region. Just miles away from the bustling towns of Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Townsend is the quintessential Appalachian town, full of rich heritage and surrounded by breathtaking nature. Townsend lies in the beautiful Tuckaleechee Cove, a mountain valley at the border of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In fact, Townsend is one of just three main gateways to the National Park. With such convenient access to the Smoky Mountains, Townsend is popular for outdoor enthusiasts. From biking and hiking to golfing and fishing, there is an endless number of ways to enjoy the outdoors around Townsend. The Little River descends from the mountains into the heart of town, making it a natural gathering place for recreation. The clean and clear mountain waters are used often for swimming, fishing, kayaking and tubing. One such popular spot for water fun is known as The Townsend Y. This swimming hole is located where the Little River and the middle prong of Little River join. It’s easy to access and widely known as a fantastic spot for families to swim, sunbathe or enjoy a picnic along the sloping hills. While the surrounding nature looks so pristine and untouched, this beautiful valley has actually been inhabited for thousands of years. In fact, evidence of inhabitants as early as 10,000 years ago was unearthed at a recent archaeological dig. Adding to that long history is a rich Appalachian heritage and the thriving logging industry of the past. Visit the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center to learn about and celebrate the culture and history of the Smokies in the 1800s. The museum displays artifacts and highlights the major periods in the region’s history, all the way from 3000 B.C. to 1930. Discover artifacts related to hunting, pottery, foodways, ceremony, games, medicine and trade of the Native Americans that once inhabited the lands. Learn about the pioneer life by stepping back in time to view some of their vehicles and tour the buildings where they worked and lived. At one time the majority of folks in the Tennessee Smokies were employed by the Little River Railroad and Lumber Company, one of the largest commercial lumber operations in the Smokies. From 1901 to 1939 the company built more than 150 miles of railroads in the Smoky Mountains and sawed more than 560 million board feet of timber. Of course now this land is known as the

the Smokies Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but visitors can still travel back in time by visiting The Little River Railroad and Lumber Company Museum, dedicated to preserving the heritage of this grand company. The museum, located in Townsend, collects and preserves the history of the companies and people in this region. Even more history lies underneath the surface at Tuckaleechee Caverns, a mile-long cave system that’s known as the “greatest site under the Smokies.” Estimated to be between 20 and 30 million years old, the caverns tell the story of how the Cherokee Indians used this area as a hiding place before they were discovered in the mid-1800s. The caverns soon became a place where folks would go to cool off as they did their chores and a resting place for summer naps. An excellent way to combine recreation and history is to take a ride on the historic bike trail, an 8-mile route right through Townsend. Grab a brochure at the Townsend Visitors Center and then follow the markers—they point out historic sites and explain important historic periods. Townsend is also adjacent to Cades Cove, a once-thriving mountain community built in the 1800s. Today, an 11-mile driving loop takes visitors back in time as they explore a working grist mill and other historical buildings and churches. Aside from its gorgeous nature, Townsend is the perfect mountain town in which you can spend a peaceful day. Browse the town’s charming shops, art galleries and antique stores where you’ll find one-of-a-kind items, mountain-style crafts, original art and sweet Southern hospitality with a smile. When you need a little energy you’ll find a plethora of quaint cafes and eateries dotting the streets of

Many groups raft both sections, but it’s also fine to split your group to allow each person to raft on the section they’re most comfortable with. After your trip (where you are guaranteed to be drenched) you’ll have the opportunity to change into dry clothes at Outdoor Adventure Raftings’ new changing rooms, located right on the river! With so many activities offered to visitors, the Tennessee Smokies may just be your new favorite spot to visit! All the attractions and adrenaline-pumping excitement will keep you flying high and enjoying your stay in this lush, natural environment.

SPECIALTY FINDS Of course you’ll want to have that one particular item that reminds you of the unforgettable memories made in the Smokies each time you look at it. Perhaps you’ll delight in an assortment of hand poured candles, a collection of music reminiscent of your visit or a piece of accent furniture that mimics the rustic feel of Tennessee. Maybe it will be a piece of jewelry, a set of vintage luggage or a personalized Christmas ornament that puts a warm feeling in your heart. You’ll find an incredibly varied assortment of gifts and goodies inside the adorable specialty shops here.

MADE IN THE MOUNTAINS An especially admirable perk of shopping in the Smokies is that so many of the items found here are handcrafted by local artists and artisans. The Smokies are compiled of various craft guilds where talented artists can join together in revolutionizing the arts scene in Tennessee. Next time you purchase a hand-stitched quilt, a homemade bar of soap or a beautifully painted piece of art, you’re not only leaving with a quality piece of craftsmanship; you’re helping to support the local arts community, and that’s a purchase you can be proud of.

Knoxville Another cultural mecca, also known as the heart of the city, is Knoxville’s Market Square District. This charming downtown area is constantly booming with things to do and entertainers to see. On the first Friday of each month, the area is bustling with live musical performers and gallery walks, but unique activities can be found here all year long. Knoxville’s Market Square also has tons of fresh produce and foods from the East Tennessee region at the farmers’ market hosted on Wednesdays and Saturdays, May through November. Come for an early afternoon stroll to see live entertainment and interactive fountains that keep the square buzzing with visitors. After choosing the freshest produce, spend some time perusing the adorable shops that line the square. In fact, the whole city of Knoxville is known for its eclectic variety of shopping options. From locally-owned boutiques to spacious malls, there are many options when it comes to browsing and buying. Art collectors can meander about several intimate galleries, and fashionistas will love the designer stores and boutiques, while antiques aficionados could spend hours browsing the many elegant antique stores. While in the downtown area, make sure to visit The University of Tennessee campus. Visitors can see UT’s Neyland Stadium, the largest college football stadium in the Southeastern Conference as well as the third largest college stadium in the nation. The University is also home of the Lady Vols Basketball team, which has been a competitor for national titles for more than 30 years. The Lady Vols have participated in every NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Championship tournament since the NCAA allowed women’s sports in the 1981–1982 season. As an important reminder of the Lady Vols’ success, the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville celebrates and educates about the achievements of all levels of women’s basketball. The hall is also home to a rather sizable landmark; perhaps you’ve noticed the humongous basketball in the sky, which happens to be the world’s largest basketball, measuring 30 feet tall and weighing 10 tons. Another significant landmark in Knoxville is the Sunsphere from the 1982 World’s Fair, which brought together more than 11 million visitors from all over the world in an effort to recognize the important issue of energy. The World’s Fair Park site is still used today for many events and festivals throughout the year. Knoxville also has that big-city feel when it comes to dining. Whether you’re craving classic Southern cooking or some international flair, you’ll find it here. There are more than 600 restaurants in Knoxville, from totally casual family favorites to upscale, romantic eateries. Spend some time outdoors at the Urban Wilderness project, which has opened more than 40 recreational trails and civil war sites, all tucked into a natural environment. The project has also created 10 parks, spanning 1,000 acres of woodlands and starting only two miles from downtown. Whatever you want to explore, from the basketball court to the boutiques and beyond, Knoxville is the place to go.

Golf

in the Smokies Enjoy a Full Variety of Golf Experiences and Unique Golf Vacations Golf boasts a rich history that stems from the bounteous grasses of 15th century Scotland. However, it’s not necessary to travel to faraway lands to experience this game that has frustrated and challenged countless players for centuries. From the lush green landscapes to the wide-open scenes of nature, Tennessee shares many of the same characteristics as the originating lands of Scotland, providing unique golf experiences for both avid and casual golfers.

Courses in the Smoky Mountain area have taken advantage of the scenic beauty and the natural surroundings to create an experience that will be remembered as much for the scenery as for the challenge. First is the challenge of playing on courses designed by greats like Arthur Hills, Gary Player and D.J. DeVictor. Then there is the challenge of concentrating on the game while surrounded by the splendor and majesty of the Great Smoky Mountains. For those not accustomed to it, mountain golf presents its own unique challenges and thrills. “Reading the green,” for example, can be particularly difficult when the slope of the putting surface is severe, yet disguised by a mountainous backdrop. Even addressing the ball and obtaining the proper stance can be challenging with the undulating terrain. On many holes, golfers, particularly those with errant drives, will not find another level lie after they leave the tee box until they reach the next hole. Adjusting to the slope presents an ever changing opportunity to test yourself and your game as no two shots are ever quite the same. In addition to the sloping fairways, the topography often allows for extreme elevation changes that make proper club selection a continuous challenge. The change in altitude on many mountain courses, many times from tee to green, can give golfers the thrill of a lifetime with drives that travel 300 yards and more to the fairway below. Even the crisp mountain air seems to allow the ball to travel farther and roll longer. The golf business is booming in the Smokies, with a wide range of golfing experiences, course designs and unique challenges. The Sevierville Golf Club offers guests the quality services, amenities and presentation that you’d expect to find in a private club, although they’re open to the public on a daily fee basis. With its new clubhouse situated on the banks of the Little Pigeon River and immediately adjacent to the Wilderness Resort, the Sevierville Golf Club provides the convenience and challenge you are looking for while on vacation. Their two championship courses, The Highlands course and The River course, offer two distinct sets of challenges as well as magnificent landscapes. Golfers on The Highlands course will enjoy lush, rolling hills and freshwater mountain ponds while enjoying the resort-style course which plays to a Par 70. For even more challenge, the championship layout of the River course takes golfers along the Little Pigeon River, including three holes that are situated on an island in the river. Then golfers head up into the rolling foothills for the back nine where elevation changes will force you to stay focused despite the beauty of the spectacular views. To get yourself ready for these challenges, take advantage of the club’s extensive driving range with grass tees, their expansive putting green and their chipping area to help fine tune your game. After a long day on the course, unwind at the clubhouse with a cold beverage and a tasty meal. Be sure to ask about the delicious lunch specials that change daily. Aside from being a great place to tee off on vacation, The Sevierville Golf Club hosts team building and meeting events as well as memorable wedding ceremonies and receptions. They also hold tournaments throughout the year, so visit seviervillegolfclub.com to book your next event. With courses that vary to suit everyone from beginner to professional, there is a unique experience waiting for every golfer here in the Smokies. With beautiful weather and spectacular mountain scenery, Tennessee’s golf is an experience all visitors will enjoy and continue to come back for year after year.

or many years the Smokies have been well-known for their arts and crafts. In fact, Gatlinburg is home to the Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community, an eight-mile loop with the largest group of independent artisans in North America. Needless to say, the region is a very hands-on community. Gradually throughout the years this craftiness has extended into their culinary

community as well. The locally crafted beer, whiskey, wine and cuisine offered in the Smokies will make your visit a truly memorable experience. Appalachia provides a wonderful selection of locally brewed beers. Many of these breweries offer allnatural microbrewed beers. The beers are brewed from locally grown ingredients and handcrafted in small batches to provide the freshest possible taste. The microbrewing process is truly a work of art, and you will not want to leave Appalachia without experiencing what these breweries have to offer. The area also boasts a rich history of whiskey making. Moonshiners during Prohibition especially loved the mountains as an inconspicuous place to distill their coveted contraband. What was once an undercover operation in the region is now a booming industry, with many different kinds of moonshine and whiskey available to adventurous visitors. The local distilleries craft their authentic spirits from locally harvested corn and ferment and distill the alcohol themselves.

Visit Sugarland Distilling Company in Gatlinburg for a taste of genuine Tennessee moonshine served with a side of local history. Hear some of the legends about moonshining in the Smokies, and learn how Sugarlands distills their spirits when you take a fascinating tour. When it comes time to taste the products from Sugarlands, don’t expect just ordinary moonshine. Along with their popular Silver Cloud, they offer tempting flavors such as Appalachian Apple Pie, Blockader’s Blackberry, Butterscotch Gold, Jim Tom Hedrick’s Unaged Rye, Old Fashioned Lemonade and Southern Sweet Tea. You’re sure to develop a few favorites during your visit. The Smokies are also the ideal spot for crafting wine. Tennessee’s fertile soil and climate provide an excellent setting for the art of winemaking. Locally grown grapes are harvested and crushed at these vineyards. Aging is also part of the art, and many local wineries age their wines in oak casks to give the wine a distinctly delicious oaky flavor. continued on page 50 2014/2015 | Tennessee Smokies | 49

Getting Crafty A brand new winery has just come to Townsend, Cades Cove Cellars. At Cades Cove, each step of the winemaking process takes place right at the winery, including crushing, bottling and fermentation. The winery is located on one acre of land, with plans to expand the vineyard on another acre. During a visit to their tasting room, you’ll be able to sample their delicious assortment of wines in varieties of muscadine, blackberry, chardonnay and cabernet. The art of crafting fresh cuisine is alive and well in the Smokies. Once home to a plethora of immigrants from various countries, including Portugal, Ireland and Germany, the region has inherited a

rich culinary tradition. Much of the area’s food is locally grown and harvested, including native foods that were popular in the days of early settlement. These include suppone—a cooked mixture of corn meal, water, grease and salt—and ramps, wild spring leek-type plants that are often fried with potatoes. Local farms and orchards contribute to much of the Smoky Mountain cuisine—a mix of traditional Southern comfort food and upscale dining. Wake up early one morning and visit a farmers market to discover the fresh bounty that grows here including apples, blackberries, cherries, figs, peaches, pears, asparagus, sweet corn, greens, okra, varieties of squash and fresh herbs. Also at the markets you’re likely to find an assortment of handcrafted cheeses, local honey, farm fresh meats, eggs, milk, butter, ice cream and organic products, too. Be sure to bring a cooler so that you can take some of these home-grown goodies back with you. However, you don’t have to wait until you get home to enjoy Tennessee’s local treasures. Visit one of the many area restaurants that specialize in using local ingredients in a number of creative ways to bring out the best flavors of the season. Whatever your preferred craft—whether it’s the art of brewing or that of preparing irresistible meals—the Smokies are sure to be a tasteful experience for the artist in you.

of streams and rugged terrain made the Sugarland Valley an ideal place for mountaineers to set up shop. For early moonshiners, distilling wasn’t just a fun hobby or even a scheme to make some extra money; it was a way of life. If a farmer had an unfruitful season he was able to use his corn to make whisky and turn a profit, helping to provide a better life for his family. Some families distilled their product strictly to create funds to pay their laborers on the farm because there weren’t many sources of income in the Sugarlands. It wasn’t always kept for drinking purposes either. Some would leave the moonshine in their cabinets strictly for medicinal purposes, and others would only break it out for social gatherings. No matter what folks were using it for, moonshiners began to get a reputation. continued on page 54

hen you think of moonshine, a scene may come to mind of an elderly backwoodsman wearing bib overalls sneaking into the woods. He’s tending to a homemade copper still, all the while looking over his shoulder every so often to make sure the law isn’t coming. While it’s rumored that there are still rebels who make their spirits in secret, there’s a new generation of ‘shiners who have turned distilling into an art—and a profitable industry—while paying homage to the Smokies’ rich history of hooch. The Great Smoky Mountains, specifically the Sugarland area within the park boundaries, have seen their fair share of moonshine. From the time the Scotch-Irish ran from their own excise tax and fled to the Appalachians, the settlers have been perfecting the craft of illicit whiskey. When prohibition took effect in the 1920s moonshining was at its peak, so much so that the valley began to take on the nickname “Moonshiners’ Paradise.” After the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was dedicated, rangers told stories of bootleggers moving back in because they knew the residents were moving out, and therefore they’d have more hiding space. There are still illegal moonshiners getting arrested today and having their stills busted up and their supplies confiscated. However, these folks aren’t typically making a living off of what they produce; rather it’s more of a way to make extra cash. Today, another generation of ‘shiners has discovered a way to make moonshine legally and are having much success in the process. They’re manufacturing a product inspired by the recipes passed down for generations of moonshiners in the Smokies—only less potent. Their products are classified as grain neutral spirit or corn whiskey, and although the government has no true moonshine classification, they allow these manufacturers to market the term. One such manufacturer is Sugarlands Distilling Co. Truly steeped in local history, this distillery is made from salvaged and repurposed East Tennessee barns and houses, displaying a wooden patchwork of color and age. In their grand entrance hall sits a 1928 Ford Model AA truck that’s still used today in carrying precious cargo such as sacks of sugar, bushels of corn and Mason jar-filled crates. Their Back Porch area is ideal for sitting a spell and listening to some of the regional (as well as national) talent that may grace the stage, or you may catch a fascinating tale by the Smoky Mountain Storytellers Association. Of course their most famous spot is the Sippin’ Posts where folks can gather round to sample Sugarlands’ tastiest hooch. When it comes to sipping the moonshine in today’s distilleries, don’t expect the dreadful burn that comes after taking even the smallest swig of “white lightning.” What you’ll experience are smooth varieties of ‘shine reminiscent of sipping vodka or whiskey in some cases. Many distilleries have added a delicious twist to their product by adding various flavors to choose from. Don’t be surprised to find enticing traits of strawberry, coconut, peach and of course the famous “apple pie” or cinnamon moonshine. Sugarlands Distilling Co. offers their own unique flavors. When you visit their distillery, you can choose from Silver Cloud, Appalachian Apple Pie, Blockader’s Blackberry, Butterscotch Gold, Jim Tom Hedrick’s Unaged Rye, Old Fashioned Lemonade and Southern Sweet Tea. The legal moonshine has caught on so well in recent years that folks decided to create a Tennessee Whiskey Trail. The route allows whiskey enthusiasts to sample spirits from 11 different distilleries. (You may want to recruit a designated driver for this journey.) Some distilleries along the trail even offer tours so that visitors can gain an even better appreciation for the crafting of these fine Tennessee products. Take a ride on the trail, or simply stop in at one of Tennessee’s growing number of distilleries right here in the Smokies to indulge in a sip. You’ll be drinking in a heritage that Tennessee has proudly crafted for many years—so sip slow, and enjoy the ride.
