to the Tennessee Smokies Where History Merges With Adventure
Welcome to the Tennessee Smokies—where extraordinary nature and world-class entertainment combine to create one of the nation’s best destinations year round. Families and couples alike will find the region overflowing with things to do—from hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains to dancing to live music, riding Dollywood’s many roller coasters and enjoying an all-day shopping spree. Here, adventures wait for you around every corner. Across the region, there is a great pride in the history and heritage of the mountains. On a land once inhabited by Cherokees, the Smoky Mountain region has been witness to conflicts between Native Americans and settlers, as well as Union and Confederate soldiers. But throughout the years, the community has fostered their mountain heritage above everything else, and this is reflected in the culture, museums, music and theaters across the region. So come see what the locals are so proud of—the beautiful and majestic Great Smoky Mountains. The national park, created in 1934, was once a haven for the logging industry. Timber was in fact the main economic engine of the area. But intervention came just in time—only 20 percent of the forest remained uncut at the time of the park’s inception. Now, tourism has replaced timber, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the country, beating even Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. The park straddling the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, offers a world-renowned natural landscape with endless forests, an aweinspiring diversity of plants and animal life and the quiet beauty of the ancient mountains towering above. The park is the heart of the Smoky Mountain region, and visitors and locals find solace in the serene wilderness, where the freeway buzz and cell phone chimes can be left far behind. Of course, surrounding areas are also teeming with ways to enjoy the outdoors, such as white water rafting on the Pigeon River, horseback riding, underground caverns, fishing and much more. This region is also full of many attractions that don’t involve nature but still have that Smoky Mountain spirit. Dollywood, the famous theme park owned by legendary country singer Dolly Parton, offers the thrill of roller coasters paired with unbeatable live entertainment and events. The music, crafts and

food around every corner echo the cherished heritage of the Smokies. If your idea of entertainment is shopping, you’re in luck. Choose from dozens of outlet malls, hundreds of shops and thousands of bargains. Find everything from designer brands to handmade crafts, beautiful art to unique holiday decorations. Be sure to check out the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community, the largest group of independent artisans in North America. The 8-mile loop of studios and galleries allows visitors to watch as artisans create their wares. Visitors can look forward to a brand new option for shopping, restaurants and places to stay at The Island in Pigeon Forge. Take an unforgettable ride on the 200-foot-tall Great Smoky Mountain Wheel, a spectacular Ferris wheel that features an amazing light display. The wheel sits at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. As the centerpiece to the Island in Pigeon Forge, it stands as one of the tallest attractions in the Southeast! Speaking of dining, the Tennessee Smokies is home to a plethora of cuisine destinations, from barbeque and down home Southern cooking to chain restaurants and fine dining. Try out a new dish at a locally-owned restaurant or stick with your usual favorite at a well-known eatery you don’t have the chance to eat at while at home. There are also multiple breweries, wineries and distilleries in the area offering fine wines, brews and moonshine that are locally made. One of the most popular ways to spend a day or night in the Smokies of course, is to sit back and be entertained. Top quality shows, from comedy to country, gospel to Elvis, are constantly exciting audiences. Find breakfast variety shows, religious spectacles, gospel harmonies, supper shows and more. In addition to all of the daily entertainment, the Smokies hosts several events and festivals throughout the year. The area is home to many exciting events and opportunities, especially at the LeConte Center in Pigeon Forge, a 232,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility in the heart of the “Center of Fun in the Smokies.”LeConte holds an exhibit hall of 100,500 square feet that’s ideal for large assembly events, trade shows and competitive events. As you can see, the Tennessee Smokies is never lacking in things to do. So get out there and enjoy your stay! We know you’ll be coming back for more.

annually, continually receiving a lengthy list of awards. And, this year, it proudly celebrates its 30th Anniversary. Dollywood is home to award-winning rides, world-class entertainment, one-of-a-kind food choices and hard-working staff members; however, it wasn’t always the hugely successful theme park it is today. Back in 1961, the Robbins Brothers opened a small-scale attraction on the Dollywood site, known as Rebel Railroad, which featured a coal-fired steam train, general store, blacksmith shop and a saloon. The site brought in all types of intrigued visitors who were eager to catch a glimpse of all Rebel Railroad had to offer and who wanted to witness the Smoky Mountain way of life. Little did the Robbins Brothers know, they were laying the groundwork for what would later become Tennessee’s most visited attraction. Later in 1970, Rebel Railroad was purchased by the owner of the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, Art Modell, who renamed the attraction to Goldrush Junction. Although the name changed, the entertainment was unaltered, and in fact, expanded with new attractions such as a wood shop, saw mill, outdoor theater, campground and several children’s rides. Whether you’re looking to indulge your passion for the great outdoors or shop till you drop, you’ll find the opportunities for inspiration and recreation are endless and easily accessible from your vantage point in Pigeon Forge. The name “Pigeon Forge” comes from an iron forge built by Isaac Love sometime around 1820. The name of this forge referred to its location along the Little Pigeon River, in the vicinity of what is now the Old Mill. The name of the river comes from the flocks of passenger pigeons that frequented its banks at the time of the first Euro-American settlers’ arrival. Pigeon Forge is known for its world class, live entertainment. Featuring Lumberjacks, Cloggers, acustic vocalists, magicians, and blugrass bands, there is a show for every genre. That’s not the only entertainment in Pigeon Forge, offering a variety of putt-putt courses, full size golf courses, museums, aquariums and so much more to satisfy the young and the young at heart. Most activities are open year round, rain or shine. With indoor ice skating, hands on museums, lazer tag and more, even if the weather is bad, there is something for everyone to enjoy.Have a daredevil in your family Pigeon Forge has outdoor adventures such white water rafting, horseback riding, ziplining, aerial tours, go-karts and more! Many handcrafted items have come from the Pigeon Forge and Smoky Mountain regions. Wineries have been around since the beginning of tourism, and recently with the legalization of moonshine, distilleries and breweries have settled into this mountain home. Now visitors can go and watch these libations being made and are offered tasting.

1 Cooper Road Trail Just off the Cades Cove Loop, this 10.9-mile trail is perfect if you are seeking an all day hike. Starting off surrounded by maple, oak and pine trees, the trail soon rises over a few ridges along a creek then descends into a ravine leading to a great area covered with beautiful spring wildflowers. The trail is almost entirely flat and goes all the way to the edge of the park. 2 Porters Creek Trail A 4-mile round trip to Fern Branch Falls and back. The trail is famous for its luscious green forest floor and abundance of wild flowers in the spring. Following the windy Porter’s Creek, there are plenty of beautiful stopping points and three bridges to cross along the way. 3 Ace Gap Trail A 5.6-mile long trail from Rich Mountain Road to Beard Cane Trail and is considered a part of Cades Cove. The Ace Gap Trail is one of the most peaceful trails offered and parts are covered with beautiful pink Lady’s Slippers wildflowers. You will distinctly know it is Ace Gap when you pass the biggest cave in Cades Cove, Bull Cave, and the old railroad bed that crosses the trail. 4 Laurel Falls Trail A 4-mile roundtrip hike. The Laurel Falls trailhead is located between Sugarlands Visitor Center and Elkmont Campground. This trailhead is very busy during the summer and on weekends year-round. By hiking 0.75 mile beyond the falls you can enjoy an old-growth forest and big trees. 5 Andrews Bald The hike used to traverse one of the most rugged and rocky trails in The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, but after much construction, Andrews Bald is much easier now, not to mention a lot safer. Situated along Forney Ridge, the 3.6-mile hike is known for its spectacular displays of azalea and leads to a gorgeous panoramic view of the Smoky Mountain Highlands. 6 Deep Creek Loop Trail
A 4.6-mile roundtrip loop known for its streams and waterfalls and abundant wildlife throughout. The wide gravel trail is connected to several campsites and a short spur trail that leads to Indian Creek Falls, a 45-foot waterfall with a large pool ideal for wading. The trail is also used as launching point for tubing. 7 Charles Bunion Beginning at the Newfound Gap parking area, the hike to Charles Bunion travels eastward on the Appalachian Trail leading to a popular rock outcropping. Along the way you will enjoy a gorgeous view of the Smokies, a wide variety of wildflowers and outstanding views of Mount

LeConte and Myrtle Point. Your destination offers spectacular views of the Mt. Kephart to the north, The Jump Off to the west and Mount Guyot towards the east. 8 The Jump Off The trail leading to The Jump Off climbs steeply on a rugged path that will begin to level in an open, grassy area on the unmarked summit of Mt. Kephart. After a long steep climb, your efforts will be amply rewarded. The Jump Off sits atop a 1,000-foot cliff on the northeastern side of Mt. Kephart providing amazing views of the eastern and central Smokies. 9 Gregory Bald To get here, you can take the 5-mile Gregory Ridge Trail from Forge Creek Road to its intersection with the Gregory Bald Trail at Rich Gap; however, there are five trials that lead to Gregory Bald. It is perhaps most famous for the flame azaleas that bloom atop its summit each summer, which are so unique that the British Museum of Natural History has collected samples of them. Gregory Bald is a 10-acre, high mountain grass meadow which burns with orange and wine colored blooms. 10 Ramsey Cascades Trail An 8-mile roundtrip hike. Take Highway 321 east of Gatlinburg, TN to the Greenbrier entrance to the park. Follow the signs to the Ramsay Cascades Trailhead. The Ramsey Cascades Trail passes through a hardwood forest filled with beautiful plants and flowers such as silverbells, yellow birches, large tuliptrees and then leads to the Ramsey Cascades, the tallest waterfall in the park and one of the most spectacular. 11 Rocky Top The hike to Rocky Top begins at the Anthony Creek Trailhead in the far end of the Cades Cove picnic area. Continue walking east along the Appalachian Trail and you will end up at Thunderhead Mountain, which consists of three summits, the first being Rocky Top. Located roughly 1.2 miles from the Appalachian Trail junction, Rocky Top requires a fairly steep climb to reach the small bald area, but the effort is well worth it. The views are outstanding and some of the best in the entire Park. 12 Mount LeConte The most popular trail to get to Mount LeConte is the Alum Cave Bluffs Trail, about 5-miles one way, but is without a doubt one of the Park’s favorites. There is also the Boulevard Trail, the longest trail to the summit at 8 miles long. No matter how you get there, the views at Mount LeConte are considered the most prominent feature of The Great Smoky Mountains. There are even lodging cabins available on the top of the mountain for visitors to stay overnight.

Knoxville
Good Times and Good Friends await you in Knoxville, a modern Appalachian City Just an hour drive from much of the Smokies, Knoxville is an exciting city in the center of a unique Southern region. To learn more about the town’s history, take one of the popular walking tours to historical homes and estates. Or trace your own family history at the East Tennessee History Center, which houses the Southeast’s largest resource for genealogical research and home of the First Families of Tennessee program. Home to more than 20 museums and seven historical houses, Knoxville is rich in culture and arts. With its own symphony, opera and ballet companies, alongside many theaters and live music venues, the arts are alive and well in Knoxville. Another cultural mecca, also known as the heart of the city, is Knoxville’s Market Square District. This charming downtown area is constantly booming with things to do and entertainers to see. On the first Friday of each month, the area is bustling with live musical performers and gallery walks, but unique activities can be found here all year long. Knoxville’s Market Square also has tons of fresh produce and foods from the East Tennessee region at the farmers’ market hosted on Wednesdays and Saturdays, May through November. Come for an early afternoon stroll to see live entertainment and interactive fountains which keep the square buzzing with visitors. While in the downtown area, make sure to visit The University of Tennessee campus. Visitors can see UT’s Neyland Stadium, the largest college football stadium in the Southeastern Conference as well as the third largest college stadium in the nation. Another significant landmark in Knoxville is the Sunsphere from the 1982 World’s Fair, which brought together more than 11 million visitors from all over the world in an effort to recognize the important issue of energy. The World’s Fair Park site is still used today for many events and festivals throughout the year. Knoxville also has that big-city feel when it comes to dining. Whether you’re craving classic Southern cooking or some international flair, you’ll find it here. There are more than 600 restaurants in Knoxville, from totally casual family favorites to upscale, romantic eateries. Spend some time outdoors at the Urban Wilderness project, which has opened more than 40 recreational trails and civil war sites, all tucked into a natural environment. The project has also created 10 parks, spanning 1,000 cres of woodlands and starting only two miles from downtown. Whatever you want to explore, from the historical homes to the boutiques and of Knoxville Zoo! beyond, Knoxville is the place to go.

Golf
in the Smokies
Enjoy a Full Variety of Golf Experiences and Unique Golf Vacations Golf boasts a rich history that stems from the bounteous grasses of 15th century Scotland. However, it’s not necessary to travel to faraway lands to experience this game which has frustrated and challenged countless players for centuries. From the lush green landscapes to the wide-open scenes of nature, Tennessee shares many of the same characteristics as the originating lands of Scotland, providing unique golf experiences for both avid and casual golfers. Courses in the Smoky Mountain area have taken advantage of the scenic beauty and the natural surroundings to create an experience that will be remembered as much for the scenery as for the challenge. First is the challenge of playing on courses designed by greats like Arthur Hills, Gary Player and D.J. DeVictor. Then there is the challenge of concentrating on the game while surrounded by the splendor and majesty of the Great Smoky Mountains. For those not accustomed to it, mountain golf presents its own unique challenges and thrills. “Reading the green,” for example, can be particularly

difficult when the slope of the putting surface is severe, yet disguised by a mountainous backdrop. Even addressing the ball and obtaining the proper stance can be challenging with the undulating terrain. On many holes, golfers, particularly those with errant drives, will not find another level lie after they leave the tee box until they reach the next hole. Adjusting to the slope presents an ever changing opportunity to test yourself and your game as no two shots are ever quite the same. In addition to the sloping fairways, the topography often allows for extreme elevation changes which make proper club selection a continuous challenge. The change in altitude on many mountain courses, many times from tee to green, can give golfers the thrill of a lifetime with drives which travel 300 yards and more to the fairway below. Even the crisp mountain air seems to allow the ball to travel farther and roll longer. The golf business is booming in the Smokies, with a wide range of golfing experiences, course designs and unique challenges. The Sevierville Golf Club offers guests the quality services, amenities and presentation that you’d expect to find in a private club, although they’re open to the public on a daily fee basis. With its new clubhouse situated on the banks of the Little Pigeon River and immediately adjacent to the Wilderness Resort, the Sevierville Golf Club provides the convenience and challenge you are looking for while on vacation. Their two championship courses, The Highlands course and The River course, offer two distinct sets of challenges as well as magnificent landscapes. Golfers on The Highlands course will enjoy lush, rolling hills and freshwater mountain ponds while enjoying the resort-style course which plays to a Par 70. For even more challenge, the championship layout of the River course takes golfers along the Little Pigeon River, including three holes which are situated on an island in the river. Then golfers head up into the rolling foothills for the back nine where elevation changes will force them to stay focused despite the beauty of the spectacular views. To get yourself ready for these challenges, take advantage of the club’s extensive driving range with grass tees, their expansive putting green and their chipping area to help fine tune your game. After a long day on the course, unwind at the clubhouse with a cold beverage and a tasty meal. Be sure to ask about the delicious lunch specials which change daily. Aside from being a great place to tee off on vacation, The Sevierville Golf Club hosts team building and meeting events as well as memorable wedding ceremonies and receptions. They also hold tournaments throughout the year, so visit seviervillegolfclub.com to book your next event. With courses that vary to suit everyone from beginner to professional, there is a unique experience waiting for every golfer here in the Smokies. With beautiful weather and spectacular mountain scenery, Tennessee’s golf is an experience all visitors will enjoy and continue to come back for year after year.

or many years the Smokies have been well-known for their arts and crafts. In fact, Gatlinburg is home to the Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community, an eight-mile loop with the largest group of independent artisans in North America. Needless to say the region is a very hands-on community. Gradually throughout the years this craftiness has extended into their culinary community as well. The locally crafted beer, whiskey, wine, moonshine and cuisine offered in the Smokies will make your visit a truly

memorable experience. Appalachia provides a wonderful selection of locally brewed beers. Many of these breweries offer all-natural microbrewed beers. The beers are brewed from locally grown ingredients and handcrafted in small batches to provide the freshest possible taste. The microbrewing process is truly a work of art, and you will not want to leave Appalachia without experiencing what these breweries have to offer. The Smokies are also the ideal spot for crafting wine. Tennessee’s fertile soil and climate provide an excellent setting for the art of winemaking. Locally grown grapes are harvested and crushed at these vineyards. Aging is also part of the art, and many local wineries age their wines in oak casks to give the wine a distinctly delicious oaky flavor. The area also boasts a rich history of “white whiskey” making. The Great Smoky Mountains, specifically the Sugarland area within the park boundaries, have seen their fair share of moonshine. From the time the Scotch-Irish ran from their own excise tax and fled to the Appalachians, the settlers have been perfecting the craft of illicit whiskey. The fertile ground used to grow grain and corn, abundance of streams and rugged terrain made the Sugarland Valley an ideal place for mountaineers to set up shop. Today’s generation of ‘shiners have discovered a way to make moonshine legally and continually have much success in the process. They’re manufacturing a product inspired by the recipes passed down for generations of moonshiners in the Smokies—only less potent. Their

products are classified as grain neutral spirit or corn whiskey, and although the government has no true moonshine classification, they allow these manufacturers to market the term. If you do decide to take a sip of moonshine produced in today’s distilleries, don’t expect the dreadful burn that comes after taking even the smallest swig of “white lightning.” What you’ll experience are smooth varieties of ‘shine reminiscent of sipping vodka or whiskey in some cases. Many distilleries have added a delicious twist to their product by adding various flavors to choose from. Don’t be surprised to find enticing traits of strawberry, coconut, peach and of course the famous “apple pie” or cinnamon moonshine. When it comes to dining, the art of crafting fresh cuisine is alive and well in the Smokies. Once home to a plethora of immigrants from various countries, including Portugal, Ireland and Germany, the region has inherited a rich culinary tradition. Much of the area’s food is locally grown and harvested, including native foods that were popular in the days of early settlement. These include suppone—a cooked mixture of corn meal, water grease and salt—and ramps, wild spring leek-type plants which are often fried with potatoes. Local farms and orchards contribute to much of the Smoky Mountain cuisine—a mix of traditional Southern comfort food and upscale dining. Wake up early one morning and visit a farmers’ market to discover the fresh bounty that grows here including apples, blackberries, cherries, figs, peaches, pears, asparagus, sweet corn, greens, okra, varieties of squash and fresh herbs. Also at the markets you’re likely to find an assortment of handcrafted cheeses, local honey, farm fresh meats, eggs, milk, butter, ice cream and organic products too. Be sure to bring a cooler so that you can take some of these homegrown goodies back with you. However, you don’t have to wait until you get home to enjoy Tennessee’s local treasures. Visit one of the many area restaurants which specialize in using local ingredients in a number of creative ways to bring out the best flavors of the season. Whatever your preferred craft—whether it’s the art of brewing or that of preparing irresistible meals—the Smokies are sure to be a tasteful experience for the artist in you.
