hen it comes to family entertainment in the Tennessee Smokies, theater takes one of the leading spots. There are a variety of shows you can choose from, whether you are looking for a musical production accompanied by a delicious meal or a classic Tennessee family feud with audience interaction. The theaters in the Smokies are truly one-of-a-kind and offer a wide range of family-friendly performances that never fall short of amazing.
Located on the Parkway in Pigeon Forge, The Comedy Barn® in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., recently celebrated its 21st year anniversary of providing good, clean family comedy. Known as “The Most Successful and Most Attended Clean Comedy Theater in the World,” it’s a family attraction that features a wide range of entertainment, such as ventriloquists, jugglers, magicians, singers, trained animals and some of the best comedians in the nation! This show has been seen by over 7 million visitors and receives standing ovations nightly. Open year-round, The Comedy Barn® has two shows every night in season at 5 p.m. and 8:15 p.m., as well as some scheduled matinees for groups throughout the season. Where do trained pigs, parrots, housecats, dogs and a mini donkey all perform together? The answer is at the new and original Amazing Animals show at The Comedy Barn® Theater in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Anthony and Alena King and their trained “comedy critters” perform in a hilarious pet show at The Comedy Barn® Theater at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. They have performed on Animal Planet’s Pet Star, The Tonight Show, at theme parks, festivals, fairs, pet expos, conventions and corporate events across the country and in Branson, Mo. and Lakeland, Fla. A brand new show for 2016 in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., is the Smith Morning Variety Show at The Smoky Mountain Opry™ Theater. Charlie Bob Smith is starring in this all-new show at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. He brings his unique mix of country, pop and gospel hits to the stage as well as his worldclass impersonations. Also appearing with Charlie Bob is nationally known comedian Billy Baker and a multitalented cast of singers, dancers and musicians. Another popular theater you will find on the Parkway is The Smoky Mountain Opry™, the area’s largest musical variety show starring a
talented cast of singers, dancers, aerialists, comedians and musicians! The family entertainment show includes all different types of music: country hits—both old and new—today’s pop, the best of Broadway, 60s review, gospel, patriotic music and sidesplitting comedic juggling. The Smoky Mountain Opry™ has it all! Gracing the stage is one of only 300 rare white lions in existence today! Southern Living magazine recently named The Smoky Mountain Opry™ as the “Don’t Miss Variety Show” in Pigeon Forge. If you are a fan of magic, be sure to attend Magic Beyond Belief by Darren Romeo at the Smoky Mountain Opry Theater. Magic Beyond Belief™ in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., features Siegfried & Roy’s only protégé, nationally known magician Darren Romeo, “The Voice of Magic.” Romeo, a magician and a singer, brings his critically acclaimed large-scale production to The Smoky Mountain Opry™ Theater in the 3 p.m. matinee time slot every day except Wednesday. The show features tigers, original illusions, vocal performances, celebrity impersonations, comedy and a huge tribute to the magicians who inspired him the most— Harry Blackstone, Jr. and Romeo’s mentors, Siegfried and Roy. Repeatedly voted as the Best Show in the Smokies, Country Tonite Theater is a two-hour powerhouse of large-scale production numbers featuring the talented singers, dancers and musicians. Moving at a nonstop pace, the lineup also features youth performers and sidesplitting comedy, which makes the show a must-see! Celebrating its 20th season, 2016 promises to surpass all expectations as they introduce a brandnew, hilarious show combining comedy, riveting gospel and American patriotism! If you are looking to watch an amazing performance but haven’t eaten dinner yet, head over to The Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud™ and become a part of the longest running feud in
history. The Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Feud™ in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., is a hilarious family-friendly hit production inspired by real-life events. The show offers guests extraordinary country, bluegrass and gospel musical performances, award-winning hillbilly musicians, cloggers, diving dogs and a huge mountain feast. Granny’s ‘all you can eat’ mountain feast includes fried chicken, pork barbecue, creamy soup, mashed taters, corn on the cob, bread, coleslaw and dessert. Vegetarian options are available. But that’s not the only famous family feud that goes down in the Smokies. Enjoy dinner in a unique way at the Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction, where you will experience a friendly North and South competition, thrilling horse riding stunts, spectacular special effects, musical productions and, of course, a delicious 4-course meal with a dessert. New in 2016, you don’t want to miss Dolly Parton’s Lumberjack Adventure Dinner & Show opening in May ensuring the same family entertainment that visitors enjoy year after year. The Murder Mystery Theater in Pigeon Forge features four hilarious shows and a 4-course meal you will “die” for! The different shows include Whodunnit Lucy, where everyone’s favorite redhead is up to her old tricks; Moonshine Murder, the aftermath of Uncle Bessie selling his highly sought after moonshine recipe to the local distillery; and The Killbillies and Scarlett: Reloaded, a welcome back to Scarlett after her stay in jail for killing the Colonel, her father. This small and intimate theater has grown in popularity over the years due to its interactive shows and delicious 4-course meal. PIGEON FORGE Mapping memories in Pigeon Forge
Welcome to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee! In our special corner of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina, you’re never far from a variety of unique vacation experiences and the City of Pigeon Forge is your perfect base camp to enjoy everything the region has to offer. With the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as our backyard, Pigeon Forge is the natural gathering place for your next getaway. Whether you’re looking to indulge your passion for the great outdoors or shop till you drop, you’ll find the opportunities for inspiration and recreation are endless and easily accessible from your vantage point in Pigeon Forge. The name “Pigeon Forge” comes from an iron forge built by Isaac Love sometime around 1820. The name of this forge referred to its location along the Little Pigeon River, in the vicinity of what is now the Old Mill. The name of the river comes from the flocks of passenger pigeons that frequented its banks at the time of the first Euro-American settlers’ arrival. Pigeon Forge is known for its world-class, live entertainment. Featuring Lumberjacks, Cloggers, acoustic vocalists, magicians and bluegrass bands, there is a show for every genre. That’s not the only entertainment in Pigeon Forge, offering a variety of putt-putt courses, fullsize golf courses, museums, aquariums and so much more to satisfy the young and the young at heart. Most activities are open year-round, rain or shine. With indoor ice-skating, hands-on museums, laser tag and more, even if the weather is bad, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Have a daredevil in your family? Pigeon Forge has outdoor adventures, such as whitewater rafting, horseback riding, zip lining, aerial tours, go-karts and more! Many handcrafted items have come from the Pigeon Forge and Smoky Mountain regions. Wineries have been around since the beginning of tourism, and recently with the legalization of moonshine, distilleries and breweries have settled into this mountain home. Now visitors can go and watch these libations being made and taste them, too. Surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, visitors get the opportunity to play in Mother Nature’s playground. A great location in the National Park is Cades Cove, offering a myriad of things to do, such as biking, hiking, camping, horseback riding, animal viewing and picnicking, just to name a few. Cove for wildlife viewing is either early morning or late afternoon. Cades Cove Loop is open sunrise to sunset, with the exceptions of Saturday and Wednesday morning until 10 a.m. During this time, the loop is only open to foot traffic and biking. Hiking is among one of the most popular activities in the Park with many different trails with different lengths. Abrams Falls and Cades Cove Nature Trails are both shorter trails (under 5 miles). Thunderhead Mountain and Rocky Top, both of which are longer trails, begin in Cades Cove. The Sugarlands Visitor Center is another great stop when visiting the National Park. The Sugarlands Visitor Center has a free 20-minute video about the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, many animal displays of the wildlife and plant life in the area, maps and a large bookstore. The Visitor Center also has brochures and information on the history of the park. There are a few short hiking trails right beside the Visitor Center that are perfect for families with small children. So, come spend some time with us this summer in Pigeon Forge! We know you’ll just love our hometown hospitality and all the adventures you’ll have as you take our scenic byways to other delights in our surrounding mountain region. You could spend weeks here and still not see it all. So, what are you waiting for? Come on, and let’s get the show on the road! We’ll see you soon in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee—the vacation capital of the Smokies!

GATLINBURG Mapping memories in GATLINBURG
Things stayed pretty quiet around Gatlinburg for a long time until the ultimate game changer arrived in the 1930s. Great Smoky Mountains National Park: big name, big park. Quite a few families were required to move from where they’d lived, for so long and so many generations, in order for the park to be established. Many of the families were given years, even after the Park’s opening day, to find new homes for their families outside park boundaries. This was all done in accordance with President Woodrow Wilson’s signing of an act creating the National Park Service “… to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.” President Wilson’s vision was spot-on and has carried over into the modern-day Gatlinburg experience. What was coming next would be big for Gatlinburg and the surrounding area! Now boasting over 10 million visitors a year, Great Smoky Mountains National Park has transformed Gatlinburg from a sleepy little town of 70-plus years into the perennial mountain getaway choice of generations of families. Arts and crafts have long held a deep association with the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Nowhere else in the South will you find a richer heritage of fine craftsmanship than in Gatlinburg. Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community, established in 1937, is the largest group of independent Community proudly preserves the craft heritage of the Great Smoky Mountains year-round. A leisurely stroll on the downtown Parkway opens up-a world of opportunities when you’re in Gatlinburg. From the amazement of seeing 14-foot sharks swim over your head in an underwater tunnel at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies to gazing at all the incredible mysteries and amazing findings at Guinness World of Records Museum and Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, to mountain bobsledding, miniature golf and an evening of entertainment at Sweet Fanny Adams Theatre, you’ll see many incredible things. Plan on coming back year after year: three out of four people who visit Gatlinburg have been here before. If you love to shop, Gatlinburg is your kind of place! With more than 400 specialty shops, boutiques and galleries, you can easily find a special collectible or unique one-of-a-kind piece in this mountain resort. And dozens upon dozens of dining choices, from national chains to

family-owned, provide menus featuring pancakes to prime rib, and everything in between. Lodging landmarks, like the stately Mountain View Hotel and graniteladen Greystone Lodge, are just memories to the older visitor, replaced now with an almost endless array of lodging options. Luxuries like room service and big indoor or outdoor pools are a staple of a number of these facilities. The pampering of bed and breakfast lodging is available in beautiful settings nearby, with some of the area’s friendliest folks as proprietors. Scattered across the mountainsides and on the fringe roads in the hollows are cabins, condos and chalets, known for their “home away from home” ambience and privacy. Gatlinburg has welcomed new businesses to the Parkway in the last year: sweets and treats, moonshine and shopping, places to play and places to relax and refresh. The Parkway Pedestrian Plaza is a new addition to the Parkway featuring a synchronized fountain with lights, ample seating, free Wi-Fi, public restrooms and visitor information. Unique outdoor musical instruments placed next to the pavilion provide free entertainment. For the history buffs, the Gatlinburg History Museum housed in the Visitors Center at Ripley’s Aquarium Plaza highlights a century of the growth of Gatlinburg into a premier resort destination. Gatlinburg also has many fun and free things to do! Find adventure along the way when you get out of the car and join in the great family tradition of the downtown Parkway stroll. You might just choose to play miniature golf, experience the world’s largest underwater aquarium
tunnel, ride America’s largest aerial tram, take a chairlift to the top of the town, visit the unique museums or take a turn on live-action rides along the way. You can even people-watch! Investigate the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community by taking a trolley ride or a leisurely drive to visit the 8-mile loop of working artisans and crafters and see craftsmanship at its best. The community is recognized internationally as the largest group of independent artisans in North America with nearly 100 shops, studios, galleries, cafes and lodging options. Visit Arrowmont School Of Arts & Crafts, an international haven of contemporary arts and crafts education. Stop by and tour select collections of the art galleries. Need to rest your feet? Jump in your car and explore a collection of historical sites on Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, including the preservation of a homestead owned by the Noah “Bud” Ogle family who lived in Gatlinburg after the Civil War. If you are still in need of more outdoor adventures, discover Cades Cove, a western valley in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The 11-mile, oneway road passes by 19 numbered tour stops. Be sure to bring your camera in hopes of spotting wildlife, such as deer, bear, turkey, owl and fox. If you prefer, you can also experience the loop on horseback or bicycle!

The Little River descends from the mountains into the heart of town, making it a natural gathering place for recreation. The clean and clear mountain waters are used often for swimming, fishing, kayaking and tubing. One such popular spot for water fun is known as The Townsend Y. This swimming hole is located where the Little River and the middle prong of Little River join. It’s easy to access and widely known as a fantastic spot for families to swim, sunbathe or enjoy a picnic along the sloping hills. While the surrounding nature looks so pristine and untouched, this beautiful valley has actually been inhabited for thousands of years. In fact, evidence of inhabitants as early as 10,000 years ago was unearthed at a recent archaeological dig. Adding to that long history is a rich Appalachian heritage and the thriving logging industry of the past. Visit the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center to learn about and celebrate the culture and history of the Smokies in the 1800s. The museum displays artifacts and highlights the major periods in the region’s history, all the way from 3000 B.C. to 1930. Discover artifacts related to hunting, pottery, foodways, ceremony, games, medicine and trade of the Native Americans that once inhabited the lands. Learn about the pioneer life by stepping back in time to view some of their vehicles and tour the buildings where they worked and lived. At one time, the majority of folks in the Tennessee Smokies were employed by the Little River Railroad and Lumber Company, one of the largest commercial lumber operations in the Smokies. From 1901 to 1939, the company built more than 150 miles of railroads in the Smoky Mountains and sawed more than 560 million board feet of timber. Of course now this land is known as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but visitors can still travel back in time by visiting The Little River Railroad and Lumber Company Museum, dedicated to preserving the heritage of this grand company. The museum, located in Townsend, collects and preserves the history of the companies and people in this region. Even more history lies underneath the surface at Tuckaleechee Caverns, a mile-long cave system that’s known as the “greatest site under the Smokies.” Estimated to be between 20 and 30 million years old, the caverns tell the story of how the Cherokee Indians used this area as a hiding place before they were discovered in the mid-1800s. The caverns soon became a place where folks would go to cool off as they did their chores and even take summer naps. An excellent way to combine recreation and history is to take a ride on the historic bike trail, an 8-mile route right through Townsend. Grab a brochure at the Townsend Visitors Center and then follow the markers—they point out historic sites and explain important historic periods. Townsend is also adjacent to Cades Cove, a oncethriving mountain community built in the 1800s. Today, an 11-mile driving loop takes visitors back in time as they explore a working grist mill and other historical buildings and churches. Aside from its gorgeous nature, Townsend is the perfect mountain town in which you can spend a

The Island D
riving down the Parkway in Pigeon Forge, visitors’ eyes are immediately drawn to a 200-foot observation wheel that towers over one of the newest developments in East Tennessee: The Island in Pigeon Forge. After opening in the summer of 2013, The Island is entering its fourth year here in Pigeon Forge and continues to offer guests an ideal destination for family vacations, day trips or even a night out.
A One-Of-A-Kind Experience in Pigeon Forge! When developing the property, it was important for The Island’s leasing team to target specialty retail shops and experiential dining establishments to create the 23-acre entertainment destination we see today. The Island is home to stores such as Emery’s 5 and 10, which is the oldest 5 and 10 location in the South, Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery and Parrot Mountain; each offer guests a one-of-a-kind shopping experience they can’t get anywhere else. In addition to shopping, guests can experience a multitude of eateries, including Mellow Mushroom, Margaritaville and the muchanticipated Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen. As the first of its kind, the family-style restaurant serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner in a fullservice, nearly 300-seat dining area that provides the perfect view to enjoy a meal while visiting Pigeon Forge with family and friends. In addition to its Great Smoky Mountain Wheel that offers some of the best views of the Smoky Mountains, The Island is home to a Bellagiostyle show fountain, a number of rides for children and even a new ropes course. Live music, roaming magicians and a living statue performer are just a few of the surprises guests may see during their visits. Free parking, no admission and a wide range of activities to choose from make this destination a unique stop on anyone’s Pigeon Forge vacation. In 2016, guests can expect new attractions, shops and dining options at The Island, adding to what has already become one of the most visited destinations and vacation spots in East Tennessee.

The fun doesn’t stop once the temperatures drop. Visit Ober Gatlinburg for some supreme East Tennessee skiing. During winter months, the resort offers guests the chance to glide down a snowy slope on skis, a snowboard or a tube for guests ages three and older. Of course once the temperatures rise and the snow melts, there are still plenty of fun activities at Ober Gatlinburg. Enjoy a scenic chairlift ride up the mountain and a fun-filled, weaving, wandering and dipping descent on the Alpine Slide. For the best view of the Smoky Mountains, ride the Aerial Tramway for a breathtaking 2.1-mile ride up to the Resort. You can still pretend it’s winter by skating on the year-round indoor ice rink. This 140-by-75 ice arena is the centerpiece of Ober Gatlinburg’s enclosed mall. Your family can also experience fun activities including the Amaze’N Maze, the carousel, the chair swing, the blue cyclone rapids, miniature golf, children’s rides and so much more. With so many activities offered to visitors, the Tennessee Smokies may just be your new favorite spot to visit! Dive Into Flyaway
If we had to pinpoint one common dream we have all had at one point or another, we would probably land on flying. Well, today is the day for your dream to become a reality! At Flyaway Indoor Skydiving in Pigeon Forge, soar high while in a high-powered wind tunnel. Never skydived before? Allow their knowledgeable instructors to be of assistance. First, you take a 20-minute training session where you’ll learn body control techniques and safety procedures. Next, you strap on all your gear! After you’re equipped with your helmet and suit, you and four other flyers step into the wind tunnel with an instructor while you each take turns during a 15-minute session, or for three minutes each. Before you know it, you may even become skilled enough to show off your tricks! If you’d rather be a spectator or watch before you try, take a seat on their observation deck for free.

of whitewater rafting—one of the most thrilling workouts on the water! Featuring miles of heart-stopping rapids and familyfriendly waters, it’s easy to see why the Pigeon River is one of the most popular whitewater rivers around. The Upper Pigeon features miles of class III and IV rapids that are perfect for an extreme rush. The Lower Pigeon, with gentle class I and II rapids, is great for ages three and up. Both the Upper and Lower sections are accompanied by gorgeous, unforgettable scenery. Crush some waves at Big Creek Expeditions in beautiful Hartford. Big Creek offers a quest on the Upper and Lower rivers and also an Adventure Package, where guests can combine the best of both worlds for a full day of fun. Start with a whitewater expedition on the Upper Section, and finish with a relaxing float down the Lower Section. Enjoy a memorable riverside picnic in between the two excursions. Also in Hartford, Outdoor Adventure Rafting offers riders the chance to experience a guided, two-hour whitewater tour on the Upper Section that’s perfect for beginners or intermediate paddlers or a Lower Section tour for those who aren’t quite ready for the big rapids. Many groups raft both sections, but it’s also fine to split your group to allow each person to raft on the section they’re most comfortable with. After your trip, where you are guaranteed to be drenched. Luckily, you’ll have the opportunity to change into dry clothes at Outdoor Adventure Rafting’s changing rooms that are located right on the river! Located in three convenient locations is the Smoky Mountains’ premier tubing company for over 20 years—River Rage Tubing. With each location offering private river access, River Rage’s reputation is based on offering the best service at the lowest price. Every trip includes a custom-designed tube, free shuttle service all day, USCG-approved life vest and choice of a tube-run. Little River provides numerous exciting mountain rapids along with slower moving waters that are perfect for some family fun. After getting a ride back from the shuttle to the main location, take a break and eat lunch at the Little River Barbeque Restaurants or continue the excitement at the Go-Kart Track right next door for some of the fastest go-karts around. Smoky Mountain River Rat also uses the Little River as its source of fun with two river trips— Upper section and Lower section—included in their one low price. The Upper section is an adventurous float featuring a scenic float with adventure rapids and swimming holes. The Lower section is a family-friendly float—which features a rock jump, rope swing and relaxing rapids—that offers just as scenic as a ride! Located just 15 miles from Pigeon Forge, 20 miles from Gatlinburg and nine miles from Cades Cover Scenic Loop, River Rat is a must while vacationing in the Smoky Mountains.

ust an hour drive from much of the Smokies, Knoxville is an exciting city in the center of a unique Southern region. To learn more about the town’s history, take one of the popular walking tours to historical homes and estates. Or trace your own family history at the East Tennessee History Center, which houses the Southeast’s largest resource for genealogical research and home of the First Families of Tennessee program. Home to more than 20 museums and seven historical houses, Knoxville is rich in culture and arts. With its own symphony, opera and ballet companies, alongside many theaters and live music venues, the arts are alive and well in Knoxville. Another cultural mecca, also known as the “heart of the city,” is Knoxville’s Market Square District. This charming downtown area is constantly booming with things to do and entertainers to see. On the first Friday of each month, the area is bustling with live musical performers and gallery walks, but unique activities can be found here all year long. Knoxville’s Market Square also has plenty of fresh produce and cuisine from the East Tennessee region at the farmers market hosted on Wednesdays and Saturdays, May 4 through November 19. Come for an early afternoon stroll to see live entertainment and interactive fountains, which keep the square buzzing with visitors. While in the downtown area, make sure to visit The University of Tennessee campus. Visitors can see UT’s Neyland Stadium, the largest college football stadium in the Southeastern Conference as well as the third largest college stadium in the nation. A visit to Knoxville isn’t complete without a day at the Knoxville Zoo. Home to African lions, exotic birds and more, get up close and personal to learn about these alluring furry friends. After you traverse throughout the zoo, don’t miss out on Gorilla Valley. In 2015, the zoo welcomed two baby gorillas. What makes Obi and Ubuntu so special is that they’re the first to be born at a Tennessee park in 30 years. They’re also an endangered species; 348 total of this species reside in 49 zoos. Another significant landmark in Knoxville is the Sunsphere from the 1982 World’s Fair, which brought together more than 11 million visitors from all over the world in an effort to recognize the important issue of energy. The World’s Fair Park site is still used today for many events and festivals throughout the year. Knoxville also has that big-city feel when it comes to dining. Whether you’re craving classic southern cooking or some international flair, you’ll find it here. There are more than 600 restaurants in Knoxville, from strictly casual, family favorites to upscale, romantic eateries. Spend some time outdoors at the Urban Wilderness project, which has opened more than 40 recreational trails and civil war sites, all tucked into a natural environment. The project has also created 10 parks, spanning 1,000 acres of woodlands and beginning only 2 miles from downtown. Whatever you choose to explore, from the historical homes to the boutiques and beyond, Knoxville is the place to visit.

olf boasts a rich history that stems from the bounteous grasses of 15th-century Scotland. However, it’s not necessary to travel to faraway lands to experience this game, which has frustrated and challenged countless players for centuries. From the lush green landscapes to the wide-open scenes of nature, Tennessee shares many of the same characteristics as the originating lands of Scotland, providing unique golf experiences for both avid and casual golfers. Courses in the Smoky Mountain area have taken advantage of the scenic beauty and the natural surroundings to create an experience that will be remembered as much for the scenery as for the challenge. First is the challenge of playing on courses designed by greats, like Arthur Hills, Gary Player and D.J. DeVictor. Then there is the challenge of concentrating on the game while surrounded by the splendor and majesty of the Great Smoky Mountains. For those not accustomed to it, mountain golf presents its own unique challenges and thrills. “Reading the green,” for example, can be particularly difficult when the slope of the putting surface is severe, yet disguised by a mountainous backdrop. On many holes, golfers, particularly those with errant drives, will not find another level lie after they leave the tee box until they reach the next hole. Adjusting to the slope presents an ever-changing opportunity to test yourself and your game as no two shots are ever quite the same. In addition to the sloping fairways, the topography often allows for extreme elevation changes, which make proper club selection a continuous challenge. The change in altitude on many mountain courses—many times from tee to green—can give golfers the thrill of a lifetime with drives which travel 300 yards and more to the fairway below. Even the crisp mountain air seems to allow the ball to travel farther and roll longer. The golf business is booming in the Smokies, with a wide range of golfing experiences, course designs and unique challenges. The Sevierville Golf Club offers guests the quality services, amenities and presentation that you’d expect to find in a private club; however, they’re open to the public on a daily fee basis. With its new clubhouse situated on the banks of the Little Pigeon River and immediately adjacent to the Wilderness Resort, the Sevierville Golf Club provides the convenience and challenge you are looking for while on vacation. Their two championship courses, The Highlands course and The River course, offer two distinct sets of challenges as well as magnificent landscapes. Golfers on The Highlands course will enjoy lush, rolling hills and freshwater mountain ponds while enjoying the resort-style course, which plays to a Par 70. For even more challenge, the championship layout of the River course takes golfers along the Little Pigeon River, including three holes, which are situated on an island in the river. Then golfers head up into the rolling foothills for the back nine, where elevation changes will force them to stay focused despite the beauty of the spectacular views. To get yourself ready for these challenges, take advantage of the club’s extensive driving range with grass tees, their expansive putting green and their chipping area to help fine-tune your game. After a long day on the course, unwind at the clubhouse with a cold beverage and a tasty meal. Be sure to ask about the delicious lunch specials, which change daily. Aside from being a great place to tee off on vacation, The Sevierville Golf Club hosts team building and meeting events as well as memorable wedding ceremonies and receptions. They also hold tournaments throughout the year, so visit SeviervilleGolfClub.com to book your next event. With courses that vary to suit everyone, from beginner to professional, there is a unique experience waiting for every golfer here in the Smokies. With beautiful weather and spectacular mountain scenery, golfing in Tennessee is an experience all visitors will enjoy and continue to come back for year after year.

For many years, the Smokies have been well-known for their arts and crafts.
In fact, Gatlinburg is home to the Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community, an 8-mile loop with the largest group of independent artisans in North America. Needless to say, the region is a very hands-on community. Throughout the years this craftiness has gradually trickled into their culinary community as well. The locally crafted beer, whiskey, wine and moonshine offered in the Smokies will make your visit a truly memorable experience. 2016/2017 | Tennessee Smokies | 47

Appalachia provides a wonderful selection of locally-brewed beers. Many of these breweries even offer all-natural microbrewed beers. The brews are crafted from locally-grown ingredients and are handcrafted in small batches to provide the freshest taste possible. The microbrewing process is truly a work of art, and you will not want to leave Appalachia without experiencing what these breweries have to offer. With four locations in Tennessee, you’ve probably encountered Smoky Mountain Brewery. The folks at Smoky Mountain offer a handful of mainstay brews, such as pale ales, porters and wheat beers, that you can find year-round as well as beers brewed for each season! The Smokies are also an ideal location for crafting wine. Tennessee’s fertile soil and climate provide an excellent setting for the art of winemaking. Locally-grown grapes are harvested and crushed at these vineyards. Aging is also part of the art, and many local wineries age their wines in oak casks to give the wine a distinctly delicious oaky flavor. At Cades Cove Cellars in Townsend, each step of the winemaking process takes place right at the winery, including crushing, bottling and fermentation. During a visit to their tasting room, you’ll be able to sample their delicious assortment of wines in varieties of muscadine, blackberry, chardonnay and cabernet. Gatlinburg is home to Sugarland Cellars, a winery that celebrates rich mountain history with wines made by regionally-grown grapes. Taste from their dry reds, like Hellbender, to the sweeter rosés and fruit wines. Smoky Mountain Winery, the state’s oldest winery, in Gatlinburg offers free tastings from over 20 of their award-winning wines. Then, at Bootleggers Homemade Wine, they craft deliciously unique wines, including muscadine blush to the southern staple, scuppernong. Tennessee Homemade Wines impresses with their wine that they’ve been perfecting for 100 years. The area also boasts a rich history of “white whiskey” making. Moonshiners during Prohibition especially loved the mountains as SCAN an inconspicuous place to distill their coveted contraband. What HERE FOR was once an undercover operation in the region is now a booming GREAT industry, with many different kinds of moonshine and whiskey DEALS available to adventurous visitors. The local distilleries craft their authentic spirits from locally-harvested corn and then ferment and distill the alcohol themselves. Today’s generation of ‘shiners have discovered a way to make moonshine legally and continually have much success in the process. They’re manufacturing a product inspired by the recipes passed down for generations of moonshiners in the Smokies—only less potent. Their products are classified as grain neutral spirit or corn whiskey, and although the government has no true moonshine classification, they allow these manufacturers to market the term. Thunder Road Distillery in Kodak keeps the legend of Thunder Road alive. The 1958 film, Thunder Road, perfectly encapsulates the story of Tennessee moonshine, its midnight runners and the importance of family and brotherhood—the heartbeat of the distillery. Distilling for over 50 years, master distiller Dwight, makes moonshine, whiskey and rum. No matter your preferred craft, the Smokies are sure to provide a tasteful imbibing adventure.

‘Round In the Smokies
T
he art of crafting fresh cuisine is alive and well in the Smokies. Once home to a plethora of immigrants from various countries, including Portugal, Ireland and Germany, the region has inherited a rich culinary tradition. Much of the area’s food is locally-grown and harvested, including native foods that were popular in the days of early settlement. These include suppone, which is a cooked mixture of cornmeal, water, grease, salt and ramps—wild, spring, leek-type plants. Local farms and orchards contribute to much of the area’s cuisine—a mix of traditional Southern comfort food and upscale dining. Wake up early and visit a farmers market to discover the fresh bounty that grows here, including apples, blackberries, cherries, figs, peaches, pears, asparagus, and more. Be sure to bring a cooler so that you can take some of these homegrown goodies back with you. However, you don’t have to wait until you get home to enjoy Tennessee’s local treasures. Visit one of our many area restaurants, which specialize in bringing out the best flavors of the season. When you step off the trails or exit the attractions here in the Smokies, your stomach will be the first one to tell you that it’s time to re-energize. At Alamo Steakhouse, enjoy the best Angus steaks in the Smokies. Step back in time and dine at The Diner, a 1950s-style diner with the juiciest burgers in town. For the more exotic palate, experience the Tex-Mex flavors of Loco Burro’s fajitas in a festive atmosphere. It’s no secret that the Smokies are known for their authentic southern cuisine. The best fried chicken in the Smokies can be found at Mama’s Farmhouse. At Bennett’s Pit Bar-B-Que, enjoy finger lickin’ pork ribs, chicken and brisket basted in their own unique sauce. Roll up your sleeves, and don’t be embarrassed to wear a bib! Then, Hatfield McCoy Dinner Show not only entertains you with a comedic performance, but you can feast on their buttery corn on the cob, mashed taters and more. Combining entertainment and cuisine with Southern flair, the Hard Rock Café in Pigeon Forge offers a fine selection of barbecue, burgers, sandwiches, dessert and an exciting menu for the kids. Even during the warmer months, the folks at Big Daddy’s Pizzeria aren’t afraid of a little heat! Their 500-degree, smokin’ hot oven is their device for delivering the best homemade pizzas crafted with their own marinara. For a familiar pizza choice, rest assured that the Smokies are also home to Domino’s carrying the same favorite pizza that you know and love. If the kiddos are in the mood for pizza, but you’re craving more Italian cuisine, everyone’s appetites will be met by dining with Taste of Italy for traditional dishes as well as specialty items, such as their ravioli made with lobster. Now that we’re on the subject of seafood, Captain Jim’s Seafood Buffet carries every variety of seafood that you can imagine! From crab cakes to their award-winning clam chowder, the buffet doesn’t stop there! Indulge in their homemade desserts for a sweet finale to your meal. Gatlinburg is also home to Crawdaddy’s, where you can order piles of crawfish and a bucket of beer while enjoying the mountain views. Speaking of spectacular sights, step into Greenbrier Restaurant, a historic 1939 log cabin with windows spanning from the floor to the ceiling. Taste their signature dishes, such as prime rib or escargot a la bourguignon, as well as vegetarian offerings and delectable desserts. Do yourself a favor and save room for dessert. While you may recognize Ober Gatlinburg for their exhilarating attractions, their restaurant, Seasons of Ober, features a variety of salads, Southern favorites, and unique offerings like mac and cheese stuffed chicken! Whatever irresistible meals you decide to craft or explore for the first time, the Smokies are sure to be a tasteful experience for the artist in you.

1 Cooper Road Trail Just off the Cades Cove Loop, this 10.9-mile trail is perfect if you are seeking an all-day hike. Starting off surrounded by maple, oak and pine trees, the trail soon rises over a few ridges along a creek, then descends into a ravine leading to a great area covered with beautiful spring wildflowers. The trail is almost entirely flat and goes all the way to the edge of the park.
6 Deep Creek Loop Trail A 4.6-mile roundtrip loop known for its streams and waterfalls and abundant wildlife throughout, the wide gravel trail is connected to several campsites and a short spur trail that leads to Indian Creek Falls, a 45-foot waterfall with a large pool ideal for wading. The trail is also used as a launching point for tubing.
2 Porters Creek Trail A 4-mile roundtrip to Fern Branch Falls and back, the trail is famous for its luscious green forest floor and abundance of wildflowers in the spring. Following the windy Porter’s Creek, there are plenty of beautiful stopping points and three bridges to cross along the way.
7 Charles Bunion Beginning at the Newfound Gap parking area, the hike to Charles Bunion travels eastward on the Appalachian Trail leading to a popular rock outcropping. Along the way you will enjoy a gorgeous view of the Smokies, a wide variety of wildflowers and outstanding views of Mount LeConte and Myrtle Point. Your destination offers spectacular views of Mt. Kephart to the north, The Jump Off to the west and Mount Guyot toward the east.
3 Ace Gap Trail A 5.6-mile-long trail from Rich Mountain Road to Beard Cane Trail, this trail is considered a part of Cades Cove. The Ace Gap Trail is one of the most peaceful trails offered and parts are covered with beautiful pink Lady’s Slipper wildflowers. You will distinctly know you’ve reached Ace Gap when you pass the biggest cave in Cades Cove, Bull Cave, and the old railroad bed that crosses the trail. 4 Laurel Falls Trail A 4-mile roundtrip hike, the Laurel Falls trailhead is located between Sugarlands Visitor Center and Elkmont Campground. This trailhead is very busy during the summer and on weekends yearround. By hiking 0.75 mile beyond the falls you can enjoy an old-growth forest and big trees. 5 Andrews Bald The hike used to traverse one of the most rugged and rocky trails in The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, but after much construction, Andrews Bald is much easier now, not to mention a lot safer. Situated along Forney Ridge, the 3.6-mile hike is known for its spectacular displays of azaleas and leads to a gorgeous panoramic view of the Smoky Mountain Highlands.
441
8 The Jump Off The trail leading to The Jump Off steeply climbs on a rugged path that will begin to level in an open, grassy area on the unmarked summit of Mt. Kephart. After a long, steep climb, your efforts will be amply rewarded. The Jump Off sits atop a 1,000-foot cliff on the northeastern side of Mt. Kephart providing amazing views of the Eastern and Central Smokies. 9 Gregory Bald To get here, you can take the 5-mile Gregory Ridge Trail from Forge Creek Road to its intersection with the Gregory Bald Trail at Rich Gap; however, there are five trials that lead to Gregory Bald. It is perhaps most famous for the flame azaleas that bloom atop its summit each summer, which are so unique that the British Museum of Natural History has collected samples of them. Gregory Bald is a 10-acre, high mountain grass meadow which burns with orange and wine-colored blooms.

Know • The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the U.S. with approximately 9–10 million visitors annually. • A short, but steep, 0.5-mile paved hike takes visitors up to Clingmans Dome, a 54-foot-tall observation tower used to witness spectacular views of the park.
Fun Facts aAlbPouart k the Nation
• The 1980s movie A Smoky Mountain Christmas, starring Lee Majors and Dolly Parton, was filmed in the park. • The Great Smoky Mountain National Park was the first national park paid in part by federal funds.
• Known as the “Salamander Capital of the World,” approximately 30 species of salamander can be found in the park.
• John D. Rockefeller, Jr. contributed 5 million dollars toward the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
• Townsend is known as the “Peaceful Side of the Smokies” because it’s a low-key entrance to the park.
• Kids ages 5–12 can become a Junior Ranger by completing a list of activities in a Junior Ranger booklet at the Visitor Center, Cades Cove or Elkmont campground.
• In partnership with the City of Gatlinburg and Great Smoky Mountains Association, the national park hosts an annual “Music of the Mountains” festival every March.
• The Great Smoky Mountains were originally deemed “Great Iron Mountains” despite the little iron found here.
11 Rocky Top The hike to Rocky Top begins at the Anthony Creek Trailhead in the far end of the Cades Cove picnic area. Continue walking east along the Appalachian Trail and you will end up at Thunderhead Mountain, which consists of three summits, the first being Rocky Top. Located roughly 1.2 miles from the Appalachian Trail junction, Rocky Top requires a fairly steep climb to reach the small bald area, but the effort is well worth it. The views are outstanding and some of the best in the entire park.
• Approximately 550 miles of the hiking trails in the park are open to horses.
• Fontana Dam, located in the national park, is 480 feet high, 2,265 feet long and the tallest concrete dam east of the Mississippi River.
12 Mount LeConte The most popular trail to get to Mount LeConte is the Alum Cave Bluffs Trail, about 5 miles one way, but is without a doubt one of the park’s favorites. There is also the Boulevard Trail, the longest trail to the summit at 8 miles long. No matter how you get there, the views at Mount LeConte are considered the most prominent feature of The Great Smoky Mountains. There are even lodging cabins available on the top of the mountain for visitors to stay overnight.
• Required free permits for all backcountry camping in the park are available at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, Sugarlands Visitor Center and other locations throughout the park.
33 74
10 Ramsey Cascades Trail Discover an 8-mile roundtrip hike. Take Highway 321 east of Gatlinburg to the Greenbrier entrance to the park. Follow the signs to the Ramsay Cascades Trailhead. The Ramsey Cascades Trail passes through a hardwood forest filled with beautiful plants and flowers, such as silverbells, yellow birches, large tuliptrees, and then leads to the Ramsey Cascades, the tallest waterfall in the park and one of the most spectacular.
• Dogs are allowed on only two of the park’s trails—Oconaluftee River Trail and Gatlinburg Trail.
• The “smoke” that rises from the Smokies in Gatlinburg is actually mist caused by moisture that is released from the surrounding vegetation. • The national park is one of two locations in the world where you can witness the synchronous fireflies phenomenon.
• Parts of the land contained within the park was once part of the Cherokee Indians’ homeland.
