for a welcome video and quick tour of Virginia Beach!

From beach to bay, sand to sidewalk, Virginia Beach is way more than your average beach town. With the world’s longest pleasure beach, an award-winning boardwalk, a cosmopolitan downtown, more than 35 miles of ocean and bay beaches and the most visited nature park in the state, it’s no wonder more than 3 million people visit this exciting resort town each year. A day in Virginia Beach begins and ends at the Oceanfront. Joggers hit the 3-mile boardwalk in the early morning hours as the sun rises over the Atlantic. As more and more folks wander out of their hotel rooms to stake a place in the sand, the beach livens up, with colorful beach towels dotting the wide sandy beaches, families on surreys cruising down the boardwalk and friends meeting up for a surf, swim or stroll. With beaches wider than a football field, there’s plenty of room to stretch out on the sand, throw a Frisbee or build a sandcastle or two. The bustling Oceanfront is a flurry of activity throughout the day and into the night, when people flock to the boardwalk for oceanfront dining, live

music and family fun. During the summer, Beach Street USA takes over the Oceanfront with nightly entertainment and festivals. Fireworks light up the sky many evenings in July and August, and multiple special events and festivals bring even more activity nearly every weekend. In a city as large and diverse as Virginia Beach, you never know where the day might take you. You could be teeing off at one of the championship courses, kayaking through pristine coastal marshes, swimming with a friendly bottlenose dolphin or learning about the first colonists who set foot on American soil. Venture just an hour away from the beach and you could be riding the world’s tallest, floorless rollercoaster, reliving a Civil War battle or exploring a Colonial village. Virginia Beach and the surrounding region are rich in history, culture and—most importantly— fun. World-class museums and important historic sights complement amusement parks and entertainment venues, while festivals throughout the year celebrate everything from art to she crab soup to Virginia wine. All this with the beautiful backdrop of an endless ocean and peaceful bay make Virginia Beach one of the finest seaside getaways in the country. This Visitors Guide provides all the essential information for exploring this beautiful oceanfront town. From the eclectic shops to gourmet restaurants, you’ll find all you need to know for the ultimate Virginia Beach vacation. c

boardwalk best of the

The boardwalk in Virginia Beach is rich in history, which makes up the event-filled, attraction-packed 3-mile stretch of fun that it is today

One of the most popular attractions at Virginia Beach where everyone loves to spend time is the boardwalk. Whether your family rents a four-person surrey, enjoys an afternoon bike ride or morning jog or simply takes two quick steps on its surface while sprinting toward the ocean, it’s hard to miss this 3-mile stretch of paved walkway that was named by Travel + Leisure as one of America’s Best Beach Boardwalks. However, it hasn’t always been the smooth surfaced structure that it is today. The history of the boardwalk is filled with change, reconstruction and new beginnings. First built in 1888, the boardwalk was actually made of boards or wooden planks that ran between 12th and 16th streets in conjunction with the Princess Anne Hotel, then one of the country’s most luxurious resorts. But in 1907 tragedy struck when the boardwalk succumbed to a fire that began in the Princess Anne Hotel. Ironically, according to The Beach: A History of Virginia Beach, Virginia compiled by the Virginia Beach Public Library, a waterworks system, including hydrants and an 80,000-gallon holding tank, was in the process of being installed and was to have been in operation the next day; however, the system wasn’t completed in time to save the hotel. In 1926, residents and visitors were delighted at the construction of a new, concrete boardwalk along the same time as the opening of the Cavalier Hotel in 1927. The new walkway was 3.5 miles long, but because of a concern for stroller safety, bicycles were prohibited in 1937. Later the ban was lifted after construction of a separate sideroad for cyclists. Another accident struck in 1962 when a Nor’easter produced 20–30 foot waves that crashed into the boardwalk, breaking up the concrete and eating away many sections of the walkways. It wasn’t until the 1990s that plans for a seawall came together so the boardwalk would be protected against the elements. The project took many weeks of demolishing and more than 125,000 truckloads of sand and

157 million pounds of sheet pile. At the end of it all, about 12 million pounds of rebar and 81,000 cubic yards of concrete were used to create the new boardwalk that now stretches between 40th street and Rudee Inlet. Today the boardwalk is home to hundreds of activities from festivals, live entertainment and concerts to outdoor art showcases and sports competitions. No matter what time of year, Virginia Beach consistently buzzes with life and culture. During the day visitors stroll along the boardwalk, passing the delicate wafts of seafood coming from local restaurants and coming across nautical statues scattered throughout. When the sun starts to set, the oceanfront comes alive with music! At stages on 31st, 24th, 17th and 7th streets, local bands are playing their casual tunes while residents dance and have enjoy the music. Popular musicians also come to the Oceanfront to play live on the 5th Street beach stage right in the sand! Hundreds of visitors gather here during Memorial Day Weekend for the Patriotic Festival for celebration at the start of summertime. Famous acts from the past include the Beach Boys, Darius Rucker and Miranda Lambert. Even as summer winds down, Virginia Beach keeps the summer fun going! The annual Neptune Festival celebrates life and tastes in Virginia Beach, with food vendors and music performances lining the boardwalk. In addition to all the delicious foods and drinks, local artists showcase their pottery and stained glass creations, making this sandy gettogether a fun experience. If sitting back and relaxing is an activity you want to leave on the beach, then there are many physical events for any aged participants! Whether you want to give the Rock ‘n Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon a try, or you want to support a cause during the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in October, the oceanfront knows how to stay in shape. Other sports have their own events too, like the annual Sand Soccer Tournament and surfing competitions. Though many years of change have impacted the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, it stands as a permanent fixture where visitors have gathered for hundreds of years. The times have changed somewhat, but it is and always will be a place for seeing and being seen, for families to build memories together and for millions of bare feet to pass over the threshold on their way to fun. c 5/8/13 9:51 AM

With a 3-mile boardwalk lined with dozens of activities and beaches and an entire city bursting with activities, Virginia Beach is the ideal vacation destination for visitors of all ages. If your family loves getting outside to play, head to Rudee Inlet for parasailing and wave runner fun through Adventure Parasail & Rudee Inlet Jet Ski. Take a walk on the wild side with a game of miniature golf at Jungle Golf! Located on 22nd Street this wildly exiting game puts you right in the jungle with all your favorite animals! If it’s too hot to stand in the sun, King Neptune’s Indoor Mini-Golf is here for you! Scenes of underwater worlds and ocean life glows in neon colors as you try to tackle each hole! Another popular activity in Virginia Beach is surfing. VB Surf Sessions offers surfing lessons and surf camps as well as stand up paddleboard lessons and rentals for both sports. Virginia Beach’s parks are a great way to let your child run wild while meeting new friends. Ocean Breeze Waterpark is an outdoor venue complete with water slides, a wave pool and fun lagoon. Another great attraction is JT’s Grommet Island Park, located right on the shore. This 100% handicap accessible oceanfront park caters to all children, including those with disabilities. Another fun, outdoor location is the Hunt Club Farm’s Petting Farm, where children can visit animals of all sorts and even ride a pony! The farm also includes a yearround market place and is available for parties and events. If your kid loves to learn and explore, the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Sciences Center lets your child interact face-to-face with some of the creatures that live in our oceans. Plus the aquarium offers many educational programs for kids. At the Military Aviation Museum, children can dream of flying World War I and II aircrafts! The Military Aviation Museum also features a “Jurassic Park” complete with life-like dinosaurs your kids will love! On the boardwalk, kids will love roaming through the stores after a fun day on the beach! Find your inner child by playing dress-up and taking snapshots with Flashback Old Time Photos. If you like playing games with your family, head to Pinboys at the Beach for some bowling fun. Hang out in their all-new Tiki Room to get the true experience! Finish off your day with a fun bike ride on the boardwalk through Cherie’s Bike & Blade Rentals. Rent a buggy-sized peddler for the whole family to enjoy or individual bikes for everyone to explore on their own. Just a short walk in the sand from the boardwalk you’ll find the beautiful brick Cape Henry Lighthouse, which has been standing since 1792! Climb the stairs all the way to the top to witness a breathtaking view of Fort Story. No matter which activities you choose for your family, Virginia Beach offers every opportunity for fun, guaranteed to bring new experiences and create memories. c

Kayaking If you don’t necessarily want to get wet but still want to enjoy the tranquil beauty of the water, kayaking is the sport for you. There are plenty of places to rent a kayak, canoe or paddleboat, and there’s nothing as serene as paddling out a ways and getting in touch with the beauty of Virginia Beach’s nature. Set up a kayak tour with Chesapean Outdoors, providing 18 years of experience for their dolphin eco-tours as well as a variety of outdoor activities that guarantee adventure and fun for all. Because of their close proximity to the oceanfront and the state park, they have a flexible tour schedule and don’t require reservations weeks in advance. They’re the most experienced company conducting dolphins tours and the only company that runs them seven days a week during the season. Also visit Chesapean Outdoors for paddleboarding, bike tours, surf lessons and more! If you ever wanted to go kayaking, but weren’t sure you were up for all the paddling, Virginia Beach Electric Boat Tours have electric kayaks that are the easy to handle that tour the calm inland waters of Virginia Beach.

Kite Surfing Maybe you’re not a big fan of heights. Not to worry; you can still soar across the waves with this skillful sport. Kite surfing (or kite boarding) is a magnificent combo of surfing, wakeboarding, windsurfing and paragliding. Try to conquer the waves as you rip and run over the majestic water, and feel the rush from hanging mid-air even if it’s for a few moments before you’re greeted by the splash of the water beneath you.

Parasailing You know that dream where you’re flying? Well, you can quit dreaming now and make it come true with parasailing. Hop on board a speedboat, and soar 800 feet in the air with an activity that sweeps you off your feet—literally. This guaranteed safe trip is invigorating as you sail above the water and watch the people drift underneath you. Venture down to Adventure Parasail or Rudee Inlet Parasail. Feel the wind beneath your feet, cast your cares to the side, and let the exhilarating experience take control.

Sweet treatS...

Surfing Surfing has been one of the most prominent sports at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront for over 100 years, meaning it’s time for you to learn how! VB Surf Sessions offer day lessons, surf camps and equipment rentals. Visitors will gain the best “Surfer’s Knowledge,” which includes water safety, surfing etiquette, terminology, meteorology, oceanography and more! There will also be many exciting surfing contests throughout the summer to commemorate this gnarly activity, so mark your calendars, and get ready to rip some waves!

Stand Up Paddleboarding Take to a new form of transportation by learning the popular pastime of stand up paddleboarding. The tranquil waters near the Chesapeake Bay are ideal for a relaxing tour that allows you to reconnect Continued on page 24...

Rudee Inlet, a short, five-minute walk across Pacific Avenue from Fifth Street at the beach, is the place to go for boating and fishing charters, water activities and excellent seafood restaurants. To truly experience Rudee Inlet, just meander around the docks and watch the fishing boats and sporting boats coming and going. Drool over the irresistible aromas of fresh seafood being prepared at any of the inlet’s famous waterfront restaurants. Ride with the dolphins or soar with the seagulls on one of the many water sports adventures. And finally, toast to family and friends as the sun sets on another perfect day in Virginia Beach. Now you can experience all Rudee Inlet has to offer without stepping foot in the car or on the gas. Catch the Wave—the Hampton Roads Transit Shuttle that encircles Rudee Inlet via Route 34, Memorial Day through Labor Day. As the headquarters for both offshore and inshore fishing charters, Rudee Inlet has all you need to plan the ultimate fishing excursion. Choose from a variety of half-, full-day or even night-time trips with experienced captains who know the best fishing spots around. Many charters are air conditioned, and their staff will provide you with all the tackle and gear you’ll need to reel in some prize winners. If fishing isn’t your thing, you’ll

definitely enjoy sitting back and relaxing as the head boats return to the dock with the day’s fresh catches. Just imagine the bounty of freshly caught seafood that could end up on your plate for dinner! Rudee Inlet is also home to several water sports outfitters and is the true hub of water activity in Virginia Beach. You can rent a wave runner and head into the open ocean, right from the inlet, or take the whole family aboard a jet boat or sport boat and enjoy a day’s worth of exciting boating. Rent a kayak and explore peaceful waters, or sail the high seas on a luxury sailing yacht. You can go on a dolphin watching excursion in the summer, a whale watching trip in the winter loads of other trips anytime in between. Rudee Inlet Jet Ski Rentals has been providing a wide range of on-the-water activities for nearly 30 years, including jet skis, boats, kayaks and fishing charters. Their 20-foot sport boats fit up to seven people and are great for families who want to get out and explore the scenic Virginia Beach coast. They also offer wave runners that can fit one, two or three people at a time, as well as the largest riding area in Virginia Beach. Rudee Inlet Parasail and Adventure Parasail will allow you to fly high above the Oceanfront and watch as the sunbathers become tiny specs on the sand. Fly by yourself or tandem with a friend—you can even specify if you want to dip your feet in the water or not.

Fresh from the docks seafood, fishing charters and water activities await you along

Virginia Beach’s Rudee Inlet.

If dismal weather rains on your vacation parade, check out the Virginia Beach museum and art scene. This summer, the Virginia MOCA (Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art) will include several new exhibitions such as Stacey Steers: Night Hunter, Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project and Brian Dettmer. Local collections of art are always available, and they are the best way to bring some of Virginia Beach’s culture home with you. One of the places visitors can admire these local treasures is at the 21st Street Gallery and Frame Shop on Birdneck Road. The gallery features posters, prints and paintings as well as handmade jewelry, all reflective of the oceanfront’s artistic talents. More local artistry can be seen at The Artists Gallery, which showcases mixed media pieces, pottery and photography, all colorfully decorated among the gallery’s walls. If your admiration lies with sculptures, be sure to also visit the Richard Stravitz Sculpture and Fine Art Galleries on Laskin Road and Pacific Avenue. This pair of galleries has won a variety of awards to include one for “Best Sculpture” and previously had a featured exhibition at the National Sculpture Society in New York. Aside from art museums, there are plenty of other museums near the Oceanfront such as the Old Coast Guard Station Museum and Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum, which provide an exciting, yet educational activity for all ages. Another inspiring museum is the Virginia Aviation Museum, where planes tower over visitors and hold historic tales of sky-high flights and aerial battles. People of all ages can enjoy the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center featuring marsh, bay and ocean exhibits, a harbor seal tank, nature trails, an IMAX Theatre and one stellar gift shop. c VBVG13_02-40.indd 37

THIS IS HAMPTON

Hampton is an extraordinary city in the heart of Coastal Virginia. The 400-year old settlement is multi-faceted; rich in Civil War history, African American heritage, water recreation, and abundant shopping and dining opportunities. It is an appealing destination that prompts leisure visitors to return for major industry conventions. The cultural landscape of the nation’s oldest, continuous, English-speaking settlement in North America is dotted with historic attractions that interpret Hampton’s role in pivotal American decisions and milestones. On November 1, 2011 President Obama named Fort Monroe a National Historic Monument. Visitors are encouraged to come to the nation’s largest stone fort ever built, cross the moat and see the sites within firsthand. Climb Fort Monroe’s walls and be amazed at the awesome position Fort Monroe has held overlooking the Hampton Roads harbor throughout its history and learn about it personally at The Casemate Museum. Or perhaps you’d like to see Fort Monroe and Fort Wool from the water aboard the Miss Hampton II. The legacy doesn’t stop there: Hampton University’s historic campus leaves one amazed at the timeless significance of the institution founded in 1868. The Hampton History Museum located in Downtown Hampton provides a glimpse of the major moments in Hampton history that helped shape our great nation. From the Native American gallery depicting the lifestyle of the Virginia Indians living at Kecoughtan prior to the first settlers’ arrival, to the colonial and Antebellum galleries, you will experience Hampton during a simpler time. The life-like charred ruins reflecting the burning of Hampton in 1861 in the Civil War gallery illuminate the reconstruction of Hampton and how greatly the seafood industry must have impacted Hampton’s post-war economy. The founding of NACA, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in 1917 in Hampton was the precursor of NASA and the founding site of the American space program. Continue your explorations at the Virginia Air & Space Center and Riverside Digital 3D IMAX Theater, the result of Hampton’s relationship with NASA. More than 100 flight simulators and hands-on exhibits allow you to take the controls and experience air and space innovations of the past, present and future. The Riverside 3D IMAX Theater presents digital feature films and documentaries on a five-story screen. Next door, the Hampton Carousel spins visitors year-round on hand-carved horses and chariots. This Hampton treasure built in 1920 by European artisans is enclosed in a weatherprotective pavilion on the downtown continued on page A6

waterfront. Nearby, you’ll find the Hampton Maritime Center where the Miss Hampton II departs daily April – October for tours of the Hampton Roads harbor, and the Ocean Eagle for fishing excursions on the Chesapeake Bay. There are many historic churches in downtown Hampton and the surrounding communities. The parish of St. John’s Church, the oldest Anglican parish in North America, was founded in 1610 and celebrated their 400th anniversary along with the city in 2010. You can visit the church sanctuary and hear a recorded introduction. The fascinating cemetery is an amazing adventure in itself, with headstones spanning more than three centuries. The charming streets surrounding St. John’s are lined with small shops, restaurants, art galleries, and parks. The streets come alive with special events from April through October, including the Hampton Street Fest offered on Queen’s Way on Saturday evenings. Citywide events, such as the annual Hampton Jazz Festival, and internationally acclaimed artists draw crowds to Hampton Coliseum and to The American Theatre year-round. You’ll adore the boutique and antique shopping in Downtown Hampton and Phoebus, and the locally-owned dining establishments that receive raves from Hampton residents. National favorites and still more restaurants unique to other parts of Virginia can be found at Peninsula Town Center in the Coliseum Central District. A menu of more than 70 national and regionally-owned shops is presented at Peninsula Town Center, and more than a dozen restaurants, like Bensi, Monsoon, Abuelos, and Bar Louie flavor your visit with pleasing variety while “dinner and a movie” has been redefined at Cinebistro to now include upscale dining, feature films, top shelf beverages, bowling, a game room—all complemented by an adult-only policy after 6 pm. Theme restaurants like NASCAR Sports Grille, Luckie’s, and PBR can be enjoyed at the Power Plant of Hampton Roads, also within close proximity of concert and meeting venues. Like it spicy? Then Chipotle, Mary Helen’s and Soya are serving up the cuisine you crave. And a visit to Hampton is not complete until you savor our decadent Chesapeake Bay seafood. After all, this is where the seafood canning process was perfected. Long known as Crabtown, Hampton’s seafood has been caught, packaged and shipped throughout the world for generations. You can eat your fill at Marker 20, Surfrider, Harpoon Larry’s, Hampton Seafood Kitchen, and Joe’s Crab Shack. The helpful travel counselors at the Hampton Visitor Center are eager to assist you in planning an excursion through the city. You’ll find them at our main center located at 120 Old Hampton Lane, but they are also A6 COASTAL VIRGINIA ATTRACTIONS

available to you at the Virginia Air & Space Center, in the Hampton Maritime Center where Miss Hampton Harbor Tour tickets are available for purchase. We bet you’d like to sample a little of everything, so we’ve made it easy for you to do it all. Purchase the Hampton Sea to Stars Ticket at the Hampton Visitor Center and at the Virginia Air & Space Center. The Ticket offers admission to the Miss Hampton II, Riverside 3D Digital IMAX Theater, Hampton Carousel, Hampton History Museum and the Virginia Air & Space Center. Tickets are priced at $39 adult and $25 for youth. While you’re there pick up a Hampton Visitor Guide, complete with the Hampton Day Pass Value Card, good for special values and discounts at Hampton shops, restaurants and recreation sites. There’s no shortage of fun and adventure. After all, This is Hampton! For visitor information call 800-800-2202, 757-727-1102 or visithampton.com.

JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT, YORKTOWN VICTORY CENTER LIVING-HISTORY MUSEUMS CHRONICLE NATION’S BEGINNINGS A hands-on history experience awaits visitors at two Williamsburg area museums that explore the nation’s beginnings. At Jamestown Settlement, gallery exhibits chronicle 1600s Virginia in the context of its Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures, complementing historical interpretation at outdoor re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, the three ships that brought America’s first permanent English colonists in 1607, and the colonial fort. The story of the American Revolution, from the beginnings of colonial unrest to the formation of the new nation, unfolds at the Yorktown Victory Center through gallery exhibits and outdoor re-creations of a Continental Army encampment and 1780s farm. The museums are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Christmas and New Year’s days. For more information call (888) 593-4682 or visit www.historyisfun.org.

Swimwear Trends for 2013

By Meg of Meg’s Swimwear

Summer 2013 is finally here! Are you ready to dive into summer activities and make it the best summer ever? Warm weather and great beaches are waiting and all you need to do is create your new beach ensemble. And don’t say you dread shopping for a swimsuit. With all the possibilities of style, color, and size this year, swimsuit shopping should be as simple as a walk on the beach. Swimwear for 2013 is better and prettier than ever. There are endless options for all ages and figure types—even yours! If you haven’t shopped for a suit in a while, you will be pleasantly surprised by the array of sizes, shapes, colors and patterns available. Truly there is a suit for everyone. Now, let’s talk about that swimsuit shopping. Most importantly, choose a shop that has a huge selection of styles and sizes. It increases your

Some of the biggest trends for 2013: • Vibrant color is your ticket for a bright summer. These four are the hottest:

Pink—in every shade imaginable. Green—Choose bright fluorescent or deep emerald, a shade that complements most skin tones. Deep turquoise jewel tones—always a classic. • Prints galore! Floral prints are always popular but this year they come bold and splashy or tiny and delicate. On the flip side, there are some gorgeous modern prints in bold colors or soft washes of color. And you’ll always find a classic polka dot or animal print because they are always in style. c VBVG13_61-86.indd 65

odds of finding just the right swimsuit. There are so many options now in choosing your suit. Styles range from two-pieces, tankinis and one-pieces with hundreds of variations on each type. Size ranges have never been more accommodating— there truly is a size and a style for everyone. Most two-piece suits are sold as separates, so it is possible to buy a different size top and bottom according to your needs. Tops even come cupsized if that’s what you need. While browsing all these options, make sure you ask for assistance. There’s a lot to see and a good salesperson will be able to narrow your choices and make helpful suggestions. Even if you think there is no hope of finding a suit for your specific needs, you will be pleasantly surprised by the options that can fulfill your needs.

south beach As you’re making your way to Sandbridge, you’ll notice many quaint farm stands set up alongside the road. These are the best places to find ripe, local produce—some that was possibly hand-picked that morning. Pay these stands a visit on your way into South Beach if you’re looking to prepare a fresh-fromthe-farm meal, or stop by on your way home to savor the local goodies after your vacation. It’s easy to get swept away in the tranquil atmosphere of Sandbridge, offering both the excitement of the beach and the peacefulness of being on the bay. Take advantage of this quiet serenity by spending some time exploring Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. You may see an assortment of waterfowl such as Tundra swan, ducks and geese. More than 300 species of birds have been spotted at the refuge, including endangered species like the bald eagle. Catch glimpses of wild horses coming from the refuge, and keep an eye out for Loggerhead sea turtles. Of course, just because Sandbridge is so serene, it doesn’t mean there’s not plenty of things to do here. Practice your swing at Hell’s Point Golf Club, known for spectacular outings, tournaments and casual rounds of golf. Their championship course meanders through the Bay Back National Wildlife Refuge, offering golfers the chance to get in touch with nature as they improve their game. Whether you come for a day of family fun, a reconnection with nature or a peaceful retreat away from it all, you’re sure to find all this and more just across the bridge. c

DINE IN • PICK UP • DELIVERY

For more than 20 years the Virginia Beach Restaurant Association has been dedicated to enhancing all aspects of dining in Virginia Beach. Currently there are more than 100 restaurants in the association, a number which the organization’s president, Kristina Pitsilides Chastain, hopes to grow to 500 in the next few years. Chastain, who is also the Vice President of Operations for Captain George’s Seafood Restaurant, shares with us some exciting aspects of the ever-evolving food scene in Virginia Beach as well as some advice for vacationers looking to make the most out of their dining experience. Visitors Guide: What kind of impact do you feel the Virginia Beach Restaurant Association has had on the dining scene here? Kristina Pitsilides Chastain: It’s had an impact in many areas. Legislatively, the VBRA has been very important with fighting for its restaurant members on certain things that would negatively impact the industry. Educationally, we put on a lot of events, and we’ve always had guest speakers about certain subjects such as labor laws. As far as the dining scene, we help our restaurants by educating them: hosting talks on customer service and things that help the restaurant to perform better. VG: In the past few years, how do you think the Virginia Beach restaurant scene has changed? KPC: We are so lucky to have completely diversified and added to a very eclectic portfolio amongst our city. What amazes me so much about Virginia Beach is that you can go to a total dive, or a mile away, you can go to a super high end restaurant, and you can go to many ethnic restaurants in between. The eclectic presence of the restaurants has been amazing. East Coasters really know their food, and they enjoy their food. I’m really proud of that, and I think it’s a pretty special thing. VG: What do you think the average family is looking for in a dining atmosphere when they come here? KPC:Your average family is looking to have a memorable experience in a couple different arenas. If you have small children, mom and dad are looking for a couple minutes of peace when they eat. So when you go to a restaurant that really excels in service, there is no match for that. The average family is looking for good food at affordable prices and really good service. VG: Since there are so many amazing restaurants to choose from and only so many meals in a day, what’s your advice for vacationers who want to make the most out of the culinary side of their vacation? KPC: My suggestion would be to plan ahead. We have a wonderful resource within the Virginia Beach Restaurant Association’s website where we have a listing of all of our restaurants by category. Plan a little bit ahead of time, but use your local resources once you get here. Ask your concierge. Ask locals on the street. Get many different opinions. When people find a restaurant that

5/8/13 6:51 PM

dining they really love on their vacation, they’ll go back three or four times. VG: What do you think sets Virginia Beach apart from other coastal vacation cities? KPC: Number one: we have a lot of independently owned restaurants, and we’re really proud of that. When you come into those restaurants, you feel that authentic, genuine spirit within that restaurant. Secondly: good food and good seafood. We have a lot of talented chefs in this area. VG: What’s one seafood item that you couldn’t live without? KPC: There’s nothing like a delicious dish of sautéed, slightly spicy clams. But I love oysters too; it’s hard to pick. We’re so lucky that our oysters here are excellent. VG: Between Captain George’s four locations, you go through one million pounds of crab legs a year. What makes crab legs so popular for vacationers? KPC: There’s more meat, and it’s easy to remove; more so than the blue crab. The taste is incredible with some wonderfully drawn butter. Also it’s not an item that you get in a lot of restaurants. I think what sets us apart simply in the crab leg arena is that we use the best of the crab legs—the Alaskan snow crab legs. Because it is a buffet setting, too, you can have as much as you want here. VG: In the culinary scene, diners’ expectations are a lot higher than they used to be. What steps have some of Virginia Beach’s restaurants taken to accommodate these higher standards? KPC: It’s sort of a natural evolution. The public has higher standards, but the restaurateurs have higher standards as well, and they’re already achieving these things without being prompted. It’s important to the restaurateurs to have a superior product, to be the best in their specific field. Right now there’s a big push toward local products, and I think that the restaurateurs are just as much in sync as the public. Another thing that pleases me so much is the gardens outside of restaurants. These restaurants can be sustainable and environmentally friendly while feeding their customers the ultimate superior product. That’s why our Virginia Beach scene is really, truly one of the best culinary scenes I’ve ever been in. The Virginia Beach Restaurant Association hosts spectacular events throughout the year including Virginia Beach Restaurant Week each January, where restaurants serve price fixed menu options for lunch and dinner, and Virginia Beach Wine and Craft Beer Week in October, where restaurant’s price fixed menus are paired with wine or craft beer. Sensible Seafood Promoting seafood choices that make sense for a healthy marine environment.

Although Virginia Beach is known for its tremendous selection of seafood, there are some oceanic species that are underpopulated and therefore shouldn’t be fished year-round to protect the ocean’s natural ecosystem. To make locals and visitors more aware of this, the Virginia Aquarium created the Sensible Seafood Program. The program educates people about the different seafood available in our area and which ones are the best to choose to help sustain the environment. Sensible Seafood has published a color-coded pocket guide, which lets the general public know which seafood is the best buy compared to others. By creating awareness among consumers, the program will help the mid-Atlantic region purchase seafood that is harvested from the area without disrupting the habitat. Sensible Seafood also supports the local fishers, shrimpers and crabbers who make their living The Sensible Seafood board meets annually to discuss the most current statistics to keep the program up-to-date with the most accurate measurements. The pocket guide is a great companion to a shopping list and is a good helper for deciding a dish when dining out. Many restaurants in Virginia Beach even contribute to the program, offering to only serve seafood that is approved by the pocket guide. In conjunction to local restaurants, the Virginia Aquarium also pledged to the environmentally friendly program by following the Sensible Seafood guidelines. Considering Virginia is the third largest producer of seafood in the country, it’s a sensible program that aims to keep locals in the loop about the area’s habitat and safety. c

Orange Crush A summertime favorite by many locals, this mixture of freshly squeezed oranges, orange flavored vodka, orange liqueur and a splash of lemon-lime soda—all poured over finely crushed iced, is perfect for a breezy day. Plus, many restaurants make the crush in various flavors, and they’re all worth trying! Soak up the sun with this local favorite that tastes like a day at the beach.

Craft Beers If you’re interested in frothy local brews, Virginia Beach and Norfolk offer an abundance of highlyrated and award-winning breweries. Leading brewers include Virginia Beach’s Smartmouth Brewing and Beach Brewing Company. A new contributor to the Virginia Beach scene, Green Flash Brewing Company,

will sprout up within the next year. Other Hampton Roads contributors include O’Conner Brewing Company of Norfolk, St. George Brewing Company of Hampton and Williamsburg AleWerks.

Local Wines Fancy a glass of sultry red or glittering white? Taste some of the finest contributions to the wine industry right here in Hampton Roads! Mermaid Winery, located in Norfolk, uses grapes harvested in Virginia for that delicious taste of southeastern Virginia. Nearby on the Eastern Shore, Chatham Vineyards is known for their European-style vineyard, containing varieties of chardonnay, merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. One of their most popular wines is the Steel Fermented Church Creek Chardonnay, a crisp white wine with delicate hints of pear and green melon, which goes great with raw oysters and other seafood. c

TEACHING

THE CULINARY INSTITUTE OF VIRGINIA COOKS UP A SUCCESSFUL EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR INSPIRED CHEFS Perhaps the success of Virginia Beach’s finest restaurants can be credited to having a top culinary school in the area. The Culinary Institute of Virginia inspires budding chefs to turn their passion for food into a successful and creative career, and many go on to work in some of the area’s most accomplished restaurants. Andy Gladstein, camps director for the Culinary Institute, estimates that of the 200 students that graduate from the institute each year, approximately 40% go on to work in restaurants in Hampton Roads, and about 30% go into hotels and resorts. “That’s the beauty of food service,” he explains. “It’s everywhere.” The programs at the institute are set up so that budding chefs can learn not only how to prepare a variety of meals but how to perfect the meals and make them consistent. “The consistency is what we teach first—how to do something but do it consistently,” Gladstein notes. That’s what most students focus on in their first year along with some basic fundamentals of cooking. “If you have a good grasp of the fundamentals you can cook anything, and that’s the difference between someone who comes up through industry versus someone who receives professional training,” he explains. “In our environment, we’re teaching the fundamentals which you can apply anywhere.” In sophomore year, students have the opportunity to get much more creative, an aspect of cooking which Gladstein considers an art form. “In order to be successful, you have to have the discipline, the labor and the spirit of an artist,” he says. Nowadays chefs have to be continually coming up with new, original flavors to keep up with the ever-expanding demands of Virginia Beach’s Continued on page 76...

food scene. “Food has always been popular, but I think the expectations for food and knowledge have increased tremendously,” Gladstein explains. “Guests’ expectations are higher; they know more. They’re more sophisticated about food than they’ve ever been.” One way that the Culinary Institute is keeping up with the demands of restaurant goers as well as restaurateurs is by educating their students on the importance of using locally grown and harvested ingredients. “In our area we’re very fortunate that we have a lot of produce,” Gladstein says. The institute even has its own organic garden behind the campus where students can tend to the crops and learn how to cook with them once they’re harvested. This region is also fortunate to have an abundance of protein sources including chicken and bison farms and grass-fed beef. Naturally the most popular proteins consumed in Virginia Beach come from the sea, and the Culinary Institute has designed courses to introduce seafood earlier in the programs so that when it’s time for students to complete their externships in restaurant kitchens, they’ll have more exposure to seafood to meet the industry need. Of course as the restaurant industry scene is constantly evolving, so are the expectations for chefs, and the institute provides a well-varied education to keep up with the eclectic mix of restaurants. “We’re lucky in this area because we have a good diversity of restaurants,” Gladstein explains. “We have strong restaurants and a strong local economy.” Although Virginia Beach has already become quite famous for its impeccable dining scene, Gladstein sees it expanding even more into the future to keep up with the expectations of vacationers. “At the basic level good food should be a part of someone’s trip,” he explains. “Virginia Beach can be a place that people come because of the food...oh, and the beach is lovely.” The Culinary Institute of Virginia offers three degrees: an Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a diploma in Baking and Pastry Arts. Their campus is located at 2428 Almeda Ave., Norfolk, and soon, another location will open in Newport News. Visit www.chefva.com for more information. c

Get Ready to Tee Off At Some of the Best Courses On the Coast Summon your inner PGA Pro and tee off at one of the many first-rate courses in Virginia Beach. As the largest city in the Commonwealth, Coastal Virginia is home to more than a dozen golf courses, each with a distinctive layout and atmosphere. From the coastal marshes and sand dunes of Sandbridge to the farmland and forests further inland, Virginia Beach’s varying terrain creates a wonderful canvas for any golf architect. Famous course designers such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Freddy Couples, Curtis Strange, Pete Dye, and more have all lent their talents molding this seaside landscape into stunning fairways and greens, creating championship courses and many memorable holes. In addition both Chesapeake and Norfolk offer courses that challenge all levels of golfers. There are, as a matter of fact, more than 306 holes across Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Norfolk, many with fairways framed by towering pines, coastal wetlands, lakes, rivers and streams. Don’t be surprised if you are joined by herons, deer and other wildlife, even just a few miles away from the bustling boardwalk. The natural beauty of this area shines through at all area courses, providing a serene environment for total relaxation. But don’t get too relaxed. There are definitely some challenging holes throughout all of Coastal Virginia’s courses—challenging enough that golfers keep coming back again and again to lower their handicap. Of course, most courses were designed with both the professional and beginner in mind, so even a first-time golfer can enjoy a day out on the links at nearly all of the nearby courses. Most golf courses also offer lessons for every level of golfer. Whether you need to tweak your swing or get a full introduction to the game, onsite pros are there to help. Club rentals are also available.

Top quality service and club houses are standard at area courses, so if you can’t get your game up to par—or under par, we should say—stop in at the clubhouse for a tasty beer and meal. Then explore the pro shop and find top-of-the-line clubs, clothing, shoes and everything you need to live the golfing lifestyle. Perhaps the best part about golfing in the area — It’s a year-round pastime! With average winter temperatures in the 50s, there’s never a down season for golfers. So try one, try all—golf is an experience all visitors should enjoy. Keep in mind that most courses require scheduled tee-times, so it is best to call ahead. c

FUN FACTS Curtis Strange, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame who spent more than 200 weeks in the top-10 of the Official World Golf Rankings, is from Virginia Beach. Strange won two U.S. Open championships, in 1988 and 1999. The late great golfer Lewis “Lew” Worsham hailed from nearby Newport News. Worsham won the U.S. Open by defeating another legendary golfer from Virginia, Sam Snead in the first U.S. open to be televised locally, in 1947. He also played in the first golf tournament to be broadcast nationally in 1953. John Chandler Harper won the 1950 PGA Championship and also served as the mentor to Curtis Strange. The talented golfer lived all his life in Portsmouth, Virginia, just across the river from Norfolk, until he died in 2004.

Rees Jones design, award-winning golf shop, Golf Digest. Best New Course 1982 and Best of the Beach award-winner for 15 consecutive years. Virginia Beach offers some of the best places to relax and exercise, ensuring a healthy and happy vacation A vacation at the beach is the ultimate way to unwind—you can lounge in the sun, play games with the kids, eat amazing food and totally forget about all the worries that await you at home. But while you are letting loose, why not take the opportunity to give your body some much needed attention? Many people throw health and fitness out the window when they go on vacation, but it is actually the perfect time to challenge and pamper your body. Use your free time to get active and jumpstart your fitness routine. Head to a local gym and sweat it out, or try some fun (and calorie-burning!) activities like surfing, biking or kayaking. Afterward, reward yourself at a Virginia Beach spa with a relaxing massage, body treatment or facial. Try a moisturizing skin treatment to hydrate the skin after long hours in the sun, or get a spa pedicure for sandalready feet. Massages are proven to help relieve stress and clear the mind—definitely vacation musts! Whatever the treatment, your body will thank you. And you’ll be even more ready to enjoy your time in the sun.

Tips Toward A Beautiful Vacation • Get a spray tan at a local spa here in Virginia Beach, or try one of the many self-tanning lotions on the market. However you fake it, the all-over bronzed look may keep you from spending too many hours in the sun trying to get darker. • Use a waterproof sun block with an SPF of at least 30. (Dermatologists recommend the daily use of sunscreen to prevent skin damage, early aging and skin cancer.) • Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outside. Pay special attention to the nose, ears, shoulders, tops of the feet and collarbone. • Reapply sunscreen often—at least every 2 hours. And definitely reapply after swimming or excessive sweating. • Try to get some shade sometime between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. This is when the UV rays are the strongest and can cause the most damage. Sit under an umbrella, or go grab some lunch to give your skin a break. • Don’t forget about your lips! They are very prone to burning, so apply lip balm with SPF often throughout the day. • Those with thin or thinning hair should pay serious attention to their scalp and tops of their heads. Either wear a hat or apply sunscreen to the scalp. • Longer locks can also be protected from the sun and salty water by applying conditioner before swimming, using a protective hair spray and by wearing a hat. • Wear UV protective sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and keep yourself from squinting, which causes deeper wrinkles if done excessively. • If you’re spending the day at the pool, always rinse off after swimming. Chlorine dries out the skin Small weddings & and can cause nightmares for the hair. elopement packages • Take extra caution when you are on the beach. Sand and water reflect the sun’s rays, increasing your chances of sunburn. • After a long day in the sun, apply moisturizer 757-321-0348 with aloe. This will help soothe and hydrate w w w. b e a c h w e d d i n g s v i r g i n i a . c o m the skin. c
