welcome

TO VIRGINIA BEACH

As the largest city in Virginia, Virginia Beach welcomes visitors year-round and offers a wide assortment of activities, cultural diversity and historical sites worth visiting. From beach to bay, sand to sidewalk, Virginia Beach is way more than your average beach town. With the world’s longest pleasure beach, an award-winning boardwalk, a cosmopolitan downtown, more than 35 miles of ocean and bay beaches and the most visited nature park in the state, it’s no wonder more than 3 million people visit this exciting resort town each year. A day in Virginia Beach begins and ends at the Oceanfront. Joggers hit the 3-mile boardwalk in the early morning hours as the sun rises over the Atlantic. As more and more folks wander out of their hotel rooms to stake a place in the sand, the beach livens up, with colorful beach towels dotting the wide sandy beaches, families on surreys cruising down the boardwalk and friends meeting up for a surf, swim or stroll. With beaches wider than a football field, there’s plenty of room to stretch out on the sand, throw a Frisbee or build a sandcastle or two. The bustling Oceanfront is a flurry of activity throughout the day and into the night, when

people flock to the boardwalk for oceanfront dining, live music and family fun. During the summer, Beach Street USA takes over the Oceanfront with nightly entertainment and festivals. Fireworks light up the sky many evenings in July and August, and multiple special events and festivals bring even more activity nearly every weekend. In a city as large and diverse as Virginia Beach, you never know where the day might take you. You could be teeing off at one of the championship courses, kayaking through pristine coastal marshes, swimming with a friendly bottlenose dolphin or learning about the first colonists who set foot on American soil. Venture just an hour away from the beach and you could be riding the world’s tallest, floorless rollercoaster, reliving a Civil War battle or exploring a Colonial village. Virginia Beach and the surrounding region are rich in history, culture and—most importantly— fun. World-class museums and important historic sights complement amusement parks and entertainment venues, while festivals throughout the year celebrate everything from art to she crab soup to Virginia wine. All this with the beautiful backdrop of an endless ocean and peaceful bay make Virginia Beach one of the finest seaside getaways in the country. This Visitors Guide provides all the essential information for exploring this beautiful oceanfront town. From the eclectic shops to gourmet restaurants, you’ll find all you need to know for the ultimate Virginia Beach vacation. c

Did you know that each year the world produces more than 300 million pounds of plastic and less than 10 percent of that gets recycled? Much of it ends up in the sea endangering precious marine life. Thanks to the efforts of more than 1,000 volunteers, over 10 tons of marine debris has been collected in just three years, and the items that used to be trash have been put on display in an astounding exhibit titled Washed Ashore. View it at the Virginia Aquarium this summer! www.washedashore.org

WAVE STATUE ON 31ST STREET If you take a drive along the Laskin Road Gateway roundabout, you’ll see a brand new piece of art that’s not easy to miss. Wave, a 35-foot-tall metal structure, made of marine-grade stainless steel and weighing 15,000 pounds, was installed last fall to commemorate the city’s 50th anniversary. The sculpture, which is taller than a three-story building, sits in a shallow pool of water that cascades over the edge. At night, Wave is illuminated by colorful LED lights.

of the Boardwalk

Virginia Beach’s Boardwalk is rich in history, events & fun!

One of the most popular attractions at Virginia Beach where everyone loves to spend time is the boardwalk. Whether your family rents a four-person surrey, enjoys an afternoon bike ride or morning jog or simply takes two quick steps on its surface while sprinting toward the ocean, it’s hard to miss this 3-mile stretch of paved walkway.

However, it hasn’t always been the smooth surfaced structure that it is today. The history of the boardwalk is filled with change, reconstruction and new beginnings. First built in 1888, the boardwalk was actually made of boards or wooden planks that ran between 12th and 16th streets in conjunction with the Princess Anne Hotel, then one of the country’s most luxurious resorts. But in 1907 tragedy struck when the boardwalk succumbed to a fire that began in the Princess Anne Hotel. Ironically, according to The Beach: A History of Virginia Beach, Virginia compiled by the Virginia Beach Public Library, a waterworks system, including hydrants and an 80,000-gallon holding tank, was in the process of being installed and was to have been in operation the next day; however, the system wasn’t completed in time to save the hotel.

In 1926, residents and visitors were delighted at the construction of a new, concrete boardwalk along the same time as the opening of the Cavalier Hotel in 1927. The new walkway was 3.5 miles long, but because of a concern for stroller safety, bicycles were prohibited in 1937. Later the ban was lifted after construction of a separate sideroad for cyclists. Another accident struck in 1962 when the famous Ash Wednesday Nor’easter produced 20–30 foot waves that crashed into the boardwalk, breaking up the concrete and eating away many sections of the walkways. It wasn’t until the 1990s that plans for a seawall came together so the boardwalk would be protected against the elements. The project took Continued on page 18...

many weeks of demolishing and more than 125,000 truckloads of sand and 157 million pounds of sheet pile. At the end of it all, about 12 million pounds of rebar and 81,000 cubic yards of concrete were used to create the new boardwalk that now stretches between 40th street and Rudee Inlet. The newest project to take place makes it easier—and much safer— for pedestrians and cyclists to get from Rudee Inlet to the Boardwalk. The Rudee Inlet Connector Walk is a 10-foot-wide concrete walkway that connects Winston Salem Avenue, under the Rudee Inlet Bridge, to the 4th Street parking lot, providing a lighted, direct linkage from the Marina district to the Oceanfront. Today the boardwalk is home to hundreds of activities from festivals, live entertainment and concerts to outdoor art showcases and sports competitions. No matter what time of year, Virginia Beach consistently buzzes with life and culture. During the day visitors stroll along the boardwalk, passing the delicious wafts of seafood coming from local restaurants. When the sun starts to set, the oceanfront comes alive with music! At stages on 34th, 31st, 24th, 17th and 7th streets, local bands are playing their casual tunes while residents dance and have enjoy the music. Popular musicians also come to the Oceanfront to play live on the 5th Street beach stage right in the sand! Hundreds of visitors gather here during Memorial Day Weekend for the Patriotic Festival for celebration at the start of summertime. Even as summer winds down, Virginia Beach keeps the summer fun going! The annual Neptune Festival celebrates life and tastes in Virginia Beach, with food vendors and music performances lining the boardwalk. In addition to all the delicious foods and drinks, local artists showcase their pottery and stained glass creations, making this sandy gettogether a fun experience. If sitting back and relaxing is an activity you want to leave on the beach, then there are many physical events for any aged participants! Whether you want to give the Rock ‘n Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon a try, or you want to support a cause during the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in October, the oceanfront knows how to stay in shape. Other sports have their own events too, like the annual Sand Soccer Tournament and surfing competitions. Though many years of change have impacted the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, it stands as a permanent fixture where visitors have gathered for years. The times have changed somewhat, but it is and always will be a place for seeing and being seen, for families to build memories together and for millions of bare feet to pass over the threshold on their way to fun. c 5/7/14 5:22 PM

challenge levels, from introductory to advanced. The selfguided courses don’t require previous climbing experience, and each climber may select a course at their comfort level and then navigate its different bridges or elements moving from tree platform to tree platform. There is even a color code to signify which courses are suitable for kids. The purple courses are appropriate for ages 5 and 6 who are climbing with an adult. The double black diamond trail is reserved for advanced climbers. There are plenty of intermediate trails where most climbers will feel comfortable. Each participant will be briefed on safety and equipped with a harness, guaranteeing a secure experience. These harnesses employ double-clipped-on technology to keep climbers continuously connected to a safety cable throughout their climbing experience. Of course, park staff members are

always on-site and available for assistance or questions. The Adventure Park has 13 different trails, and each course takes approximately 15–30 minutes to complete. Once completing a course, climbers can return to the platform to start on another trail. Generally, a climbing ticket entitles each visitor to unlimited climbs during a three-hour period. Eventually, The Adventure Park is set to be the largest of its kind in North America, and it is being built in two phases. In the first phase, there will be treetop trails set within six acres of the Virginia Aquarium. The second phase of the park is “The Labyrinth,” a scaled-down version of the existing trails that’s appropriate for ages 5–9. This area may be reserved for birthday parties when booked in advance. Other details of phase two include an elevated walkway through the Coastal Conservation Garden of the Aquarium and the “Adrenaline Tower at Thrill Hill” featuring gravity-inspired thrills for those adrenaline junkies. Swing through the trees just like Tarzan when you visit The Adventure Park at the Virginia Aquarium! Call 757-385-IZIP (4947), or visit www.virginiabeachtrees.com to learn more. c

Make a splash on your vacation with these wonderful water activities While Virginia Beach is absolutely one of the most relaxing coastal vacation locales around, it can also be one of the most exciting. It’s peaceful to soak up some sun while listening to the water crashing along the shore, but for a truly memorable vacation, get out on the water and make some waves of your own! Imagine being surrounded by nothing but tranquil waters and pristine landscapes, far away from the crowds, cars and technology. Kayaking is a blissful way to get in touch with the beauty of Virginia Beach’s nature with no engines or propellers. There are plenty of places to rent a kayak, canoe or paddleboat, and most places offer guided tours, which are extremely recommended for first timers and for those who want to get the most out of their experience. With over 121 navigable miles of waterways and 35 miles of ocean and bay beaches Virginia Beach is teeming with kayak destinations. Pick a spot, and get ready to make some memories! For a peaceful afternoon of paddling, head to First Landing State Park. You’ll have the opportunity to explore lagoons, large cypress trees and other plants as well as a varied assortment of birds including mocking birds, osprey, finch, egrets, heron and woodpeckers—as well as bald eagles on a rare occasion. After you get tired of paddling, pull over for a gorgeous hike on one of the park’s trails and enjoy a picnic lunch before getting back out on the water. Another peaceful spot is in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. As the title suggests, you’re likely to see a lot of wildlife here, including deer, river otters, loggerhead sea turtles and a variety of birds including the tundra swan, ducks, gannets, gulls and more. Back Bay is also home to unspoiled beaches and dunes, which

help to protect some of the wildlife here. This is one outing that you’ll want to be sure to bring your camera. If you’re looking for more of an adventurous journey, set out on the ocean at Virginia Beach’s north end, away from the boardwalk and crowds. For this trip, you’ll most likely travel in a sit-on-top kayak so that the waves won’t flood your space. However, you should note—you most certainly will get wet! It’s completely worth it just for the sights you’ll see. Be prepared to gaze across the water at bottlenose dolphins as many of the kayak tours in the area offer dolphin tours, which are wildly popular. Also on this journey you may come across sea turtles or cownose ray.

Other Water Sports to Try There are so many different water sports to take advantage of from parasailing to swimming, surfing, stand up paddle boarding and beyond. Whatever adventures you pursue, you can be sure that you and your family will have a wet, wild, watery adventure that you’ll remember for years to come! Parasailing: You know that dream where you’re flying? Well, you can quit dreaming now and make it come true with parasailing. Hop on board a speedboat and soar 800 feet in the air with an activity that sweeps you off your feet—literally. This trip is invigorating as you sail above the water and watch the people drift underneath you. Venture down to Adventure Parasail, which has a perfect track record for all their flights. Cast your cares to the side, and let the exhilarating experience take control. Adventure Parasail also offers kayak rentals, banana boat rides and waverunner rentals! Waverunners: You see them gliding over the waves as you relax on the beach, but now it’s your turn! Head over to Rudee Inlet Jet Ski Rentals for an exhilarating ride on the ocean waves. Rudee Inlet provides one, two and threeseated waverunners with no minimum age for passengers! Surfing: Surfing has been one of the most prominent sports at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront for over 100 years, meaning it’s time for you to learn how! Take a lesson from one of the area’s professionals, and you’ll be gliding on the waves in no time. VB Surf Sessions offer surf camps from the end of May through September, allowing visitors to gain the “Surfer’s Knowledge,” which includes water safety, surfing etiquette, terminology, meteorology, oceanography and more! They also offer paddle board lessons, kayaks for rent and wetsuits for rent or purchase. There will also be many exciting surfing contests throughout the summer to commemorate this gnarly activity, so mark your calendars, and get ready to rip some waves!

Sweet treatS...

Kite Surfing: Kite surfing (or kite boarding) is a magnificent combo of surfing, wakeboarding, windsurfing and paragliding. Try to conquer the waves as you rip and run over the majestic water, and feel the rush from hanging mid-air even if it’s for a few moments before you’re greeted by the splash of the water beneath you. Stand Up Paddleboarding: Take to a new form of transportation by learning the popular pastime of stand up paddleboarding. The tranquil waters near the Chesapeake Bay are ideal for a relaxing tour that allows you to reconnect with nature as well as view some of the beautiful waterfront homes throughout the area, and in the hidden treasure of Sandbridge. Fishing: It’s important to support the restaurants that provide local seafood to patrons, and one way to guarantee that the seafood is local is to catch it yourself! Virginia Beach is known as the striped bass capital of the world, and there are plenty of other local catches here including rockfish, tautog, flounder and tuna. To feel “one” with nature, head down to Back Bay, a nature refuge with astounding flocks of geese, birds, fish and turtles, perfect for a day of fishing on your own! Diving: Sure, there are plenty of chances to see gorgeous scenery while out on the water, but have you ever been curious to know what’s beneath the surface? Experience the watery world below with a diving excursion. There are many sites to choose from, and you can either use your own diving gear or rent what you need. Don’t let these few ideas limit you. There are dozens of ways to let loose in Virginia Beach, so throw caution to the wind, and you could wind up having an absolute blast! c VBVG14_1-40.indd 25

RUDEE INLET Waterfront Dining, Outdoor Cafes, Water Sports and More! Just around the corner from the boardwalk is a small marina community overflowing with activity. Rudee Inlet, a short, five-minute walk across Pacific Avenue from Fifth Street at the beach, is the place to go for boating and fishing charters, water activities and excellent seafood restaurants. To truly experience Rudee Inlet, just meander around the docks and watch the fishing boats and sport boats coming and going. Drool over the irresistible aromas of fresh seafood being prepared at any of the inlet’s famous waterfront restaurants. Ride with the dolphins or soar with the seagulls on one of the many water sports adventures. And finally, toast to family and friends as the sun sets on another perfect day in Virginia Beach. Now you can experience all Rudee Inlet has to offer without stepping foot in the car or on the gas. Catch the Wave—the Hampton Roads Transit Shuttle that encircles Rudee Inlet via Route 34, Memorial Day through Labor Day. There’s also a great new way to get from the Rudee Inlet to the Oceanfront via the Rudee Inlet Connector Walk. This 10-foot-wide concrete walkway connects Winston Salem Avenue, under the Rudee Inlet Bridge, to the 4th Street parking lot. The walkway improves the mobility and safety of pedestrians and cyclists with a lighted, direct linkage from the Marina district to the Oceanfront. Especially exciting for 2014 is the brand new Rudee Inlet water taxi! The taxi will take riders from the inlet through Lake Rudee to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. In the future, the service may even be expanded to include stops on the marina district. The project will include a dock for the water taxi as well as a park specially created so that those anticipating the taxi may relax as they wait.

As the headquarters for both offshore and inshore fishing charters, Rudee Inlet has all you need to plan the ultimate fishing excursion. Choose from a variety of half-, full-day or even night-time trips with experienced captains who know the best fishing spots around. Many charters are air conditioned, and their staff will provide you with all the tackle and gear you’ll need to reel in some prize winners. If fishing isn’t your thing, you’ll definitely enjoy sitting back and relaxing as the head boats return to the dock with the day’s fresh catches. Just imagine the bounty of freshly caught seafood that could end up on your plate for dinner! Rudee Inlet is also home to several water sports outfitters and is the true hub of water activity in Virginia Beach. You can rent a wave runner and head into the open ocean, right from the inlet, or take the whole family aboard a jet boat or sport boat and enjoy a day’s worth of exciting boating. Rent a kayak and explore peaceful waters, or sail the high seas on a luxury sailing yacht. You can go on a dolphin watching excursion in the summer, a whale watching trip in the winter loads of other trips anytime in between. Rudee Inlet Jet Ski Rentals has been providing a wide range of on-the-water activities for nearly 30 years, including jet skis, boats, kayaks and fishing charters. Their 20-foot sport boats fit up to seven people and are great for families who want to get out and explore the scenic Virginia Beach coast. They also offer wave runners that can fit one, two or three people at a time, as well as the largest riding area in Virginia Beach. Adventure Parasail will allow you to fly high above the

Fly by yourself or tandem with a friend—you can even specify if you want to dip your feet in the water or not. Of course, after all this adventure, you may have worked up a bit of an appetite. Locals and visitors alike know that Rudee Inlet is known for having some of the best restaurants in Coastal Virginia. Enjoy the freshest seafood straight from the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean, mouthwatering steaks, towering sandwiches, pastas and much, much more. Each of the restaurants has its own distinct ambiance and provides a fabulous view of the inlet, and many offer great food and happy hour specials regularly. Rockafeller’s, the locals’ favorite, has been serving up delicious and fresh fare since 1989. People come by foot, bike, car and boat to experience the laid-back marina atmosphere, signature cocktails and a slice of local flavor. Seafood is, of course, always the best option— especially when you can witness the fishermen rolling in with the freshest of catches. The carefree atmosphere, enhanced by the numerous rocking chairs, combined with mouth-watering meals and the Southern hospitality Virginia Beach is known for, has made Rockafeller’s the place to dine for the past two decades. Rudee’s on the Inlet Restaurant & Cabana Bar is another favorite among the locals and longtime visitors and has been delighting taste buds since 1983. Enjoy fresh seafood and steaks inside or out on the deck. The outdoor cabana, complete with seasonal fire pit tables and unique gliding tables overlooking the water, has its own menu of tasty cocktails, a delicious raw bar and mouth-watering appetizers. Stage Performances For the best live performances, take a stroll along the oceanfront for fantastic venues offering a wide variety of entertainment through Beach Street USA. There’s always something happening at Neptune Park on 31st Street. Start your evening off right by seeing performances by local bands. At the 24th Street Stage, visitors will be delighted to partake in thrilling events such as Sandstock—A Tribute to Rock & Roll held June 20–22 and the Stars & Stripes Explosion on July 4 occurring at three stages along the oceanfront. One event that draws huge crowds each year is the American Music Festival held Aug. 29–31 at 5th Street Stage, 17th Street Park, 24th Street Park and 31st Street Park. The festival brings the sounds of rock, jazz, country, R&B and more to the Oceanfront for one of the largest outdoor music events on the East Coast featuring national, regional and local acts. With thrilling performances nearly every night of the week, there’s enough outdoor entertainment to keep you busy all summer long. A new stage is coming soon to 34th Street! The 12-foot high, circular stage will feature small acts which will provide entertainment to two restaurants along the boardwalk—Lager Heads (a brand new establishment) and the existing Tortugas Café & Tiki Bar. The new stage will be slightly smaller than the 7th Street stage but will provide a similar atmosphere. Guests can expect to hear Jimmy Buffett-inspired hits and other acoustic tunes free of charge!

Local & National Music Whether it is a neighborhood beach bar featuring a live local band or a large outdoor venue delivering the latest up-and-coming rock stars, Virginia Beach certainly does not lack in the music department. Dive into the local music scene with a live band at the Oceanfront. There are plenty of hot spots offering delicious pub grub and an entertaining blend of folk, alternative, hard rock and acoustic acts. For an evening of music under the stars, head to the Farm Bureau Live Amphitheatre, a grand outdoor venue that provides cheap lawn seating to worth-every-penny front row seats and showcases the summer’s hottest musicians.

Entertainment at the 31st Street Park

Living with art you love is one of the pleasures of life. We invite you to meet our knowledgeable and friendly staff and enjoy the beauty of our two galleries. We offer original sculpture, paintings, handcrafted jewelry and unique gifts. When it comes to choosing art, allow the Stravitz staff to assist you in finding the piece that moves you or request a consultation at your home or office with our outside art specialist.

Museums & Art This summer, the Virginia MOCA (Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art) will include a new exhibition called Multiplicity, featuring more than 80 prints by outstanding modern and contemporary artists. Local collections of art are always available, and they are the best way to bring some of Virginia Beach’s culture home with you. One of the places visitors can admire these local treasures is at Richard Stravitz Sculpture and Fine Art Galleries on Laskin Road and Pacific Avenue. The gallery features paintings as well as prints and jewelry, all reflective of the oceanfront’s artistic talents. This pair of galleries has won a variety of awards to include one for “Best Sculpture.” You don’t necessarily have to visit a gallery to find some bright, cheery art pieces to liven your day. Simply by stepping out on the beach visitors will be delighted to see a colorful makeover for the lifeguard stands and storage containers that hold beach chairs and umbrellas available to rent. The installation, titled Project LifeguART will transform 42 lifeguard stands and 37 storage containers along a 3-mile stretch from 1st to 40th Street. The stands and containers will be painted in a variety of different colors and fun scenes. The project is both fun and functional; not only will the pieces add a whimsical flair to the beach, but they’ll also be helpful for visitors—especially children who may have gotten separated from their parents—to have a better reference of where they are. Aside from art, there are plenty of other museums near the Oceanfront such as the Old Coast Guard Station Museum and Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum, which provide an exciting, yet educational activity for all ages. Another inspiring museum is the Virginia Aviation Museum, where planes tower over visitors and hold historic tales of sky-high flights and aerial battles. The Military Aviation Museum is home to one of the largest private collections of World War I and II era military aircraft in the world, each restored to its prior military condition. People of all ages can enjoy the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center featuring marsh, bay and ocean exhibits, a harbor seal tank, nature trails, an IMAX Theatre and one stellar gift shop. c VBVG14_1-40.indd 37

ampton, the 400-year old city located in the heart of Coastal Virginia, is multi-faceted; rich in Civil War history, African American heritage, water recreation, and abundant shopping and dining opportunities. A visit to Hampton inspires travelers to return again and again, whether for leisure visits or for major industry conventions. The cultural landscape of North America’s oldest, continuous, English-speaking settlement is dotted with historic attractions that interpret Hampton’s role in pivotal American decisions and milestones. On November 1, 2011 President Obama named Fort Monroe a National Monument. Visitors are encouraged to explore the nation’s largest stone fort, cross the moat to explore within the walls, and climb Fort Monroe’s walls to enjoy the spectacular view of the harbor. At the Casemate Museum you can learn about Fort Monroe’s vital position at the entrance to the harbor and see the cell where Jefferson Davis was held at the conclusion of the Civil War. A tour aboard the Miss Hampton II reveals Fort Monroe’s companion fortification, Fort Wool, located across the channel at Hampton Roads’ entrance.

Museum, founded in 1868, has a collection of more than 9,000 works of contemporary art and artifacts spanning African, African-American, Pan-American and Native-American cultures. The Hampton History Museum located in Downtown Hampton provides a glimpse the major moments in Hampton history that helped shape our great nation. From the Native American gallery depicting the lifestyle of the Virginia Indians living at Kecoughtan prior to the first settlers’ arrival, to the colonial and Antebellum galleries, you will witness life in Hampton during a simpler time. The life-like charred ruins reflecting the burning of Hampton in 1861 in the Civil War gallery illuminate the reconstruction of Hampton and how greatly the seafood industry impacted Hampton’s post-war economy. The founding of NACA, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, in 1917 in Hampton was the precursor of NASA and the founding site of the American space program, and a perfect segue to your next Hampton attraction! Your exploration of America past, present and future continues at the Virginia Air & Space Center and Riverside Digital 3D IMAX Theater. The result of Hampton’s nearly century-long relationship with NASA, there are more than 100 flight simulators and hands-on exhibits of air and space innovations. The Riverside 3D IMAX Theater presents digital feature films and documentaries on a five-story screen. Next door, the Hampton Carousel spins visitors on hand-carved horses and chariots built in 1920 by European artisans. The Miss Hampton II harbor tour boat and the Ocean Eagle fishing boat are located nearby along the Hampton waterfront. There are many historic churches in downtown Hampton and the surrounding communities. The parish of St. John’s Church, the oldest Anglican parish in North America, was founded in 1610. You can visit the church sanctuary and hear a recorded introduction. The fascinating cemetery is an amazing adventure in itself, with headstones spanning more than three centuries. The charming streets surrounding St. John’s are lined with small shops, restaurants, art galleries, and parks. The streets and downtown parks come alive with special events from April through October. Citywide events and concerts featuring internationally acclaimed artists draw crowds to Hampton Coliseum and to The American Theatre year-round. You are sure to adore the boutique and antique shopping in Downtown Hampton and Phoebus. The locally-owned dining establishments receive raves from Hampton residents. National favorites and still more restaurants unique to other parts of Virginia can be found at Peninsula Town Center in the Coliseum Central District. An array of more than 70 national and regionally-owned shops is presented at

destination. Nearly 1.4 million square feet of shopping galore awaits you, with more than 180 great stores. The shopping center also includes a complete food court, full service restaurants, a children’s play area, a movie theater and free parking. Near Sandbridge Beach, the retail area of Red Mill continues to grow into a major shopping district. Major big box stores mingle with smaller boutiques, restaurants, ice cream shops and more, all with the atmosphere of an outdoor mall. And still, there is more shopping to be done in Virginia Beach! The Town Center of Virginia Beach and surrounding Pembroke area features a diverse array of shopping opportunities covering 17 city blocks, including national chains and several locallyowned boutiques with designer clothes and accessories. You’ll also find many popular places to stop for lunch or dinner. For truly one-of-a-kind gift items, check out the gift stores at some of Coastal Virginia’s finest museums—the Virginia MOCA museum shop has everything from ceramics and collectibles to art books and tote bags. The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center has two stores with unique marine-themed merchandise. Find jewelry, toys, IMAX DVDs, souvenirs, clothing and much more. And the best part—the proceeds from gift sales support the aquarium and its efforts to conserve and educate the public about marine life. For an even greater shopping adventure, explore other parts of Coastal Virginia, like downtown Norfolk’s MacArthur Center Mall and Olde Towne Portsmouth’s quaint antique shops and galleries. You surely won’t want to leave empty-handed. But there are enough shops, galleries and boutiques here in Virginia Beach to keep you more than satisfied. So get out your walking shoes and credit card and make a day (or two) out of it! c

swimwear trends

The Destination Bracelet, a stunning personal memory and treasure of Virginia Beach and the Chesapeake Bay area.

By Meg of Meg’s Swimwear Summer 2014 is finally here! Are you ready to dive into summer activities and make it the best summer ever? Warm weather and great beaches are waiting and all you need to do is create your new beach ensemble. And don’t say you dread shopping for a swimsuit. With all the possibilities of style, color, and size this year, swimsuit shopping should be as simple as a walk on the beach. Swimwear for 2014 is better and prettier than ever. There are endless options for all ages and figure types—even yours! If you haven’t shopped for a suit in a while, you will be pleasantly surprised by the array of sizes, shapes, colors, and patterns available. Truly there is a suit for everyone. Now, let’s talk swimsuit shopping. Most importantly, choose a shop that has a large selection of styles and sizes. It increases your odds of finding just the right swimsuit. There are so many options now in choosing your suit. Styles range from two-pieces, tankinis and one-pieces with hundreds of variations on each type. Size ranges have never been more accommodating—there is a size and style for everyone. Most two-piece suits are sold as separates, so it is possible to buy different size top and bottom according to your needs. Tops even come cup-sized if that’s what you need. While browsing all these options, make sure you ask for assistance. There’s a lot to see and a good salesperson will be able to narrow your choices and make helpful suggestions. Even if you think there is no hope of finding a suit for your specific needs, you will be pleasantly surprised by the options that can fulfill your needs.

SOME OF THE BIGGEST TRENDS FOR 2014: • AMAZING COLORS: Pink is the top color

choice with variations of coral, salmon, watermelon and magenta. If you’re into green, choose from pistachio, seafoam, grass or lime. The blue color story is rich with shades of indigo, royal, aqua and deep turquoise.

Sportswear, Accessories, Shoes & Fine Gifts

• THE PIN-UP LOOK: Think ‘40s glamour girl with a constructed bandeau top and high-waisted bottom. It’s not a look for everyone, but it’s a fun one to try.

• RASHGUARDS: The newest addition to your

navy and white stripes in suits this year. This lends a very crisp, clean look to make you absolutely ship-shape.

• BOARDSHORTS: Like rashguards, board shorts can be a swimsuit/cover-up. They are typically made of nylon and can be worn for swimming as well as sunning. The most important thing to remember when checking out the trends for 2014 is that the most important trend is the one that looks the best on you. When you shop for your suit, ask for help and suggestions. Be prepared to try on a number of suits so you can get a better idea of your most flattering style. With all this variety, we see a great summer wardrobe in your future. c

Where Sand and Surf Meets Shops, Parks and Fine Dining The perfect meshing of quiet and cosmopolitan, this four-mile stretch is bursting with family-friendly activities, a host of local shops and restaurants perfect for a girls’ weekend and a wealth of parks and gardens to set the scene for a romantic afternoon with a loved one. As you head south and pass over the Rudee Inlet Bridge from the Oceanfront with the Atlantic Ocean to your left and Owl’s Creek to your right, you are entering a very popular commercial destination only minutes from the resort area. At the base of the bridge, Pacific Avenue turns into General Booth Boulevard, and the resort strip gives way to a quiet oceanfront neighborhood with Camp Pendleton to the east. To the west is a wooded stretch of land buffering Owl’s Creek. Along this stretch are some of the area’s most famous attractions, including the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, Motor World and Ocean Breeze Waterpark. A great trail for biking, running and walking meanders through the woods parallel to the road, and a large boat ramp adjacent to the Virginia Aquarium offers up a scenic ocean view. Just past Ocean Breeze and Motor World sits the Owl’s Creek Tennis Complex, Hunt Club Farm’s Petting Farm, Virginia Beach’s largest campgrounds and Red Wing Park with its unique gardens. Continuing south will bring you to a mecca of shopping destinations and excellent eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. This up-and-coming area of South Beach, Red Mill Commons, is located near Sandbridge Road and is one of the beach’s newest—and largest—shopping centers. The commercial area is also home to other entertainment and diversions, including a movie theater, skating rink, a recreational center and a number of service businesses. Visit Strawbridge Shopping Center on General Booth for more fine dining, entertainment and shopping. Here you’ll find Either Ore Jewelers, a locally owned and operated family business carrying numerous exquisite lines of jewelry to include platinum, gold and sterling silver. Best of all, they offer such a varied selection that for years they’ve been able to meet the needs—and budgets—of locals and vacationers searching for that special something to take home with them.

Nestled between the bustling beaches at the Oceanfront and the lazy shores of Sandbridge, South Beach is a swiftly expanding area that blends seamlessly with its neighboring communities. Boasting everything from high-impact waterslides to lush parks and gardens, South Beach allows one to embrace the best of both worlds. As you’re making your way to Sandbridge, you’ll notice many quaint farm stands set up alongside the road. These are the best places to find ripe, local produce—some that was possibly hand-picked that morning. Pay these stands a visit on your way into South Beach if you’re looking to prepare a freshfrom-the-farm meal, or stop by on your way home to savor the local goodies after your vacation. It’s easy to get swept away in the tranquil atmosphere of Sandbridge, offering both the excitement of the beach and the peacefulness of being on the bay. Take advantage of this quiet serenity by spending some time exploring Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. You may see an assortment of waterfowl such as Tundra swan, ducks and geese. More than 300 species of birds have been spotted at the refuge, including endangered species like the bald eagle. Catch glimpses of wild horses coming from the refuge, and keep an eye out for Loggerhead sea turtles. Of course, just because Sandbridge is so serene, it doesn’t mean there’s not plenty of things to do here. Get a bird’s eye view on a flight at the Military Aviation Museum. Practice your swing at Hell’s Point Golf Club, known for spectacular outings, tournaments and casual rounds of golf. Their championship course meanders through the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, offering golfers the chance to get in touch with nature as they improve their game. Whether you come for a day of family fun, a reconnection with nature or a peaceful retreat away from it all, you’re sure to find all this and more just across the bridge. c VBVG14_61-86.indd 69

Things to Do on a Rainy Day Pouring rain doesn’t mean a poor vacation. Instead of spending your time inside pouting about the weather, do a little exploring instead. You’ll learn that Virginia Beach has much to offer—even when the sun’s not shining. Explore the aquatic life: You may not be able to hit the beach today, but there’s still plenty of aquatic activity going on at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. Their summer exhibit, Washed Ashore, uses giant sea life sculptures made entirely of marine debris collected from beaches to graphically illustrate the tragedy of pollution in oceans. Get your game on: At Dave & Buster’s you’ll have the time of your life—no matter your age! Choose from a variety of games including billiards, Guitar Hero and life-sized Connect Four. Plus, you can get your grub on while you play and enjoy a cocktail at the massive bar. Shop ‘til you drop! Virginia Beach is home to two malls: Pembroke Mall across from Town Center and Lynnhaven Mall right off Lynnhaven Parkway. Both locations offer a spectacular plethora of fine stores and restaurants. Lynnhaven Mall is also home to AMC Theatre, which includes an IMAX and 3D cinemas, so grab some popcorn and sit back to watch the latest flick. Bring out your inner kid: Your little ones will have a blast at the Children’s Museum of Virginia in nearby Portsmouth as they explore the wonderful world of activities that’s created just for them! Hit a target: It’s always a great time to learn about safety, so make the most out your free time by heading to Colonial Shooting Academy, a state-of-the-art, climate-controlled indoor shooting range and retail store. Find a treasure from the past: At the Virginia Beach Antique Mall, you’ll explore 12,500 square feet of antiques and collectibles in the heart of Virginia Beach. You never know what you’ll find, so browse slow. Knock some pins down: Bring the whole family to Pinboy’s at the Beach for a round of bowling. They offer party packs and discounts and a tasty line of snacks and beverages. Take in a game of darts at the tiki bar, Castaways, or rock and bowl at Pinboy’s After Dark from 11 p.m.–2 a.m. Get inspired: Visit the Virginia MOCA to see their current exhibits and to participate in some wonderful family activities, including Art Lab, scavenger hunts and family nights which feature music, refreshments and live entertainment inspired by current exhibitions throughout the year. Another place to view collections of exquisite art is at the Richard Stravitz Sculpture & Fine Art Galleries with locations on Laskin Road and 30th Street. Stop in to see the brilliant works by their featured and current artists. Or, head to Norfolk and visit the Selden Arcade Gallery downtown. With a mission of bringing people together through the arts and enriching Norfolk’s creative class, the Selden offers continuously-changing exhibits throughout the year. Gain some free knowledge: In 1931, Edgar Cayce founded the non-profit Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) to explore spirituality, holistic health, intuition, dream interpretation, psychic development, reincarnation and ancient mysteries. Each day, Edgar Cayce’s A.R.E. offers free lectures on varying topics from Cayce’s psychic readings. Before leaving, check out the A.R.E. Library, a living memorial to the life and work of Cayce. Look into the future: So, maybe you weren’t born with the gift of being able to see what’s in store for you in the upcoming years. If you’re interested in seeking out readings from the professionals, visit Psychic Reading, and put your mind at ease. Get a close-up look at some truly amazing aircraft: Surely you’ve noticed the jets flying proudly above, roaring with American spirit and glory. The jets today are much different from the aircraft that flew during World War I and II, but you can still get a fascinating look at planes from years past at the Military Aviation Museum, home to one of the largest private collections of WWI and II military aircraft in the world. Play dress-up: Have you ever wondered what you’d look like as a cowboy or saloon girl, a Civil war general or Southern belle? You can stop wondering and start indulging in a fun experience at Flashback Old Time Photos. They’ll provide the authentic costumes and historic props; all you have to do is loosen up and strike your best pose. Quench your thirst—in the most delicious way imaginable: There are so many fantastic wineries and breweries in Coastal Virginia that you’re probably trying to figure out a way to try as many as possible. The best solution is Taste Tidewater Tours, the area’s premier food and brew tour service that takes passengers safely from farms to restaurants to wineries and breweries. c 5/7/14 6:06 PM

Add to this a Wine Spectator’s award-winning wine list and a large selection of beers, and you have a meal to remember. Another place to find great seafood is Chix Sea Grill & Bar. Choose from selections like flounder stuffed with Chesapeake Bay crabmeat, shrimp and crab nachos or oysters on the half shell. Sensible Seafood Promoting seafood choices that make sense for a healthy marine environment. Although Virginia Beach is known for its tremendous selection of seafood, there are some oceanic species that are underpopulated and therefore shouldn’t be fished year-round to protect the ocean’s natural ecosystem. To make locals and visitors more aware of this, the Virginia Aquarium created the Sensible Seafood Program. The program educates people about the different seafood available in our area and which ones are the best to choose to help sustain the environment. Sensible Seafood has published a color-coded pocket guide, which lets the general public know which seafood is the best buy compared to others. By creating awareness among consumers, the program will help the mid-Atlantic region purchase seafood that is harvested from the area without disrupting the habitat. Sensible Seafood also supports the local fishers, shrimpers and crabbers who make their living The Sensible Seafood board meets annually to discuss the most current statistics to keep the program up-to-date with the most accurate measurements. The pocket guide is a great companion to a shopping list and is a good helper for deciding a dish when dining out. Many restaurants in Virginia Beach even contribute to the program, offering to only serve seafood that is approved by the pocket guide. In conjunction to local restaurants, the Virginia Aquarium also pledged to the environmentally friendly program by following the Sensible Seafood guidelines. Considering Virginia is the third largest producer of seafood in the country, it’s a sensible program that aims to keep locals in the loop about the area’s habitat and safety. c

VG were limited commercial brewers in Virginia at the time, and many households created their own beer with ingredients we’d recognize today: grain, water, hops and yeast. But malted barley wasn’t easy to come by in Colonial Virginia, so brewers improvised with what they had at hand like pumpkin, molasses and sometimes even spruce and pine. Small batch brewing like that of our forefathers is still hot. Craft brewing is a real trend— the number of small, independent craft brewers has skyrocketed. It is the highest number in 100 years, VA DMV Permit#64 when Prohibition and consolidation of breweries after Prohibition’s repeal drove it down. There are definitely some challenging holes throughout all of Coastal Virginia’s courses—challenging enough that golfers keep coming back again and again to lower their handicap. Of course, most courses were designed with both the professional and beginner in mind, so even a first-time golfer can enjoy a day out on the links at nearly all of the nearby courses. Most golf courses also offer lessons for every level of golfer. Whether you need to tweak your swing or get a full introduction to the game, onsite pros are there to help. Club rentals are also available. c

Health

& Beauty

A vacation at the beach is the ultimate way to unwind— you can lounge in the sun, play games with the kids, eat amazing food and totally forget about all the worries that await you at home. But while you are letting loose, why not take the opportunity to give your body some much needed attention? Many people throw health and fitness out the window when they go on vacation, but it is actually the perfect time to challenge and pamper your body. Use your free time to get active and jumpstart your fitness routine. Head to a local gym and sweat it out, or try some fun (and calorie-burning!) activities like surfing, biking or kayaking. Afterward, reward yourself at Balance Therapeutic Massage on Laskin Road with a relaxing massage. They have many different types of massages available such as Swedish, deep tissue, hot stone, Thai massage, sports massage, prenatal or postpartum massage, lymphatic drainage and reflexology and foot massage. Feel your cares drift away as your muscles relax into a state of bliss for 30 minutes, 60 minutes or 90 minutes. They also offer massage packages and couple’s massages. Another tranquil place to visit for pure relaxation and body therapy is Edgar Cayce’s A.R.E. at 67th Street. Some of their services are acupressure, various types of massage, hydrotherapies such as cedar cabinet steam/fume baths, Epsom salts baths and facials, boutique therapies including Reiki and spiritual life counseling and various spa packages to include facial and massage combinations and more. They also offer holistic clinical work as well as wellness retreats. Whatever the treatment, your body will thank you. And you’ll be even more ready to enjoy your time in the sun.

Many couples who get swept away in the natural beauty of Virginia Beach return later to tie the knot. Having a ceremony on the beach is a memorable experience and a beautiful way to start a new life together. Here are some tips to help you get started! Location: There’s now a policy that allows couples to rent a space on the beach for their ceremony. The policy requires a permit if the couple is expecting more than 150 guests but is optional for small ceremonies. Attire for her: The beauty of a beach wedding is that brides don’t have to buy an extravagant, heavy dress with a full-length train. Instead, they can opt for something light and flowy. Attire for him: No groom should suffer in the hot sun while wearing a black suit. Guys can dress down in linen or cotton in shades of tan, grey or white. Cake: There are many fabulous bakeries in the area, and since beach weddings are so popular, most are accustomed to creating coastal cakes complete with seashells, edible sand and Adirondack chairs. Décor: The Virginia Beach Wedding Chapel offers decorations such as bamboo arches, custom-made floral headers, shell strands, seashell art and paths.

How do you know if a beach wedding is right for you? Here are some tips from Beach Weddings Virginia to help you decide if a sandy ceremony is in your future. • Couples considering this type of ceremony should be free spirited and relaxed. • Brides shouldn’t be bothered by the little things—like getting the hem of their wedding gown wet or sandy. • Couples should enjoy feeling the surf tugging at their toes and the music of waves crashing against the shore. Beach Weddings Virginia specializes in destination beach weddings, elopement packages and classic wedding packages. Visit www.beachweddingsvirginia.com to read exclusive advice for getting married on the beach, as well as which location is right for you.
