16 THREE BEACHES, ONE AMAZING LOCATION

Although every visitor may not know it, Virginia Beach is made up of much more than the highly entertaining and iconic Oceanfront resort area. To the south you will find the laid-back and family orientated Sandbridge Beach and to the north is the quiet and traditional Chesapeake Bay area. With endless possibilities around every corner, each beach destination offers a variety of fun and relaxing activities both on and off the water.

20 VIRGINIA BEACH ADVENTURE TRAIL

Of course it’s nice to just sit on the beach and soak up the sun all day, but Virginia Beach also offers an incredible amount of adventurous activities that are fun and safe for the whole family. From jet skiing through the Atlantic Ocean to wildlife spotting on a dolphin tour to ziplining across tree tops, you will find that Virginia Beach is the place to be for all those spontaneous dare devils. The beach is only the beginning!

22 OLD COAST GUARD GHOST WALK

With the Old Coast Guard Station being built over 100 years ago, it’s no surprise that there have been some haunted experiences inside the building. Since the early 1970s, both locals and visitors of Virginia Beach have shared their eerie stories of when they visited the station and now it’s your turn—if you dare! Join in on a 90-minute stroll along the Oceanfront boardwalk while listening to haunted tales, discovering some uncanny legends and perhaps even witness a ghost of the past.

26 RETURN OF THE TROLLEY

20

There is no need for Google maps when it comes to the Virginia Resort Beach Trolley! This vintage, open-air trolley not only gives you and your family a memorable experience while on vacation, but will navigate you from Rudee Inlet to 41st Street with multiple stops in between. Running daily every 15 minutes, the trolley will also suggest local restaurants and shops you must try out! Ride on the open-air rear or inside with the air conditioning and make your way around the Oceanfront in a fun and convenient way!

66 RAINY DAY ACTIVITIES

If it’s start to rain outside on your beach vacation, don’t fret! There are plenty of indoor activities to choose from throughout Virginia Beach that will continue the laughter and good times. Treat yourself to a day of shopping at one of the many shopping areas or malls, be amazed at the Circus coming to town for the first time ever or get your game on at a local arcade. These activities and so much more are such fun that you will completely forget about the bad weather outside!

73 CRAFT BEER TRAIL

26

73

From brown ales with hints of mild flavors to dark, rich stouts with a “thicker” taste, the variety of craft beer available throughout Virginia Beach has become ever-increasing over recent years. While on your vacation, you’ll find a brewery either within walking distance or just a quick drive away, all of which provide both well known and Virginia Beachinspired craft beers—and even some in between—that will surely satisfy every craft beer enthusiast. No matter what your preference, chances are you’ll find one you love.

Welcome to Virginia Beach

As the largest city in Virginia, Virginia Beach welcomes visitors year-round and offers a wide assortment of activities, cultural diversity and historical sites worth visiting.

F

rom beach to bay, sand to sidewalk, Virginia Beach is way more than your average beach town. With the world’s longest pleasure beach, an award-winning boardwalk, a cosmopolitan downtown, more than 35 miles of ocean and bay beaches and the most visited nature park in the state, it’s no wonder more than 3 million people visit this exciting resort town each year.

A day in Virginia Beach begins and ends at the Oceanfront. Joggers hit the 3-mile boardwalk in the early morning hours as the sun rises over the Atlantic. As more and more folks wander out of their hotel rooms to stake a place in the sand, the beach livens up, with colorful beach towels dotting the wide sandy beaches, families on surreys cruising down the boardwalk and friends meeting up for a surf, swim or stroll. With beaches wider than a football field, there’s plenty of room to stretch out on the sand, throw a Frisbee or build a sandcastle or two. The bustling Oceanfront is a flurry of activity throughout the day and into the night, when people flock to the boardwalk for oceanfront dining, live music and family fun. During the summer, Beach Street USA takes over the Oceanfront with nightly entertainment and festivals. Fireworks light up the sky many evenings in July and August, and multiple special events and festivals bring even more activity nearly every weekend. In a city as large and diverse as Virginia Beach, you never know where the day might take you. You could be teeing off at one of the championship courses, kayaking through pristine coastal marshes, swimming with a friendly bottlenose dolphin or learning about the first colonists who set foot on American soil. Venture just an hour away from the beach and ride the world’s tallest, floorless rollercoaster, relive a Civil War battle or explore a Colonial village. Virginia Beach and the surrounding region are rich in history, culture and—most importantly—fun. World-class museums and important historic sights complement amusement parks and entertainment venues, while festivals throughout the year celebrate everything from art to she crab soup to Virginia wine. All this with the beautiful backdrop of an endless ocean and peaceful bay make Virginia Beach one of the finest seaside getaways in the country. This Visitors Guide provides all the essential information for exploring this beautiful oceanfront town. From the eclectic shops to gourmet restaurants, you’ll find all you need to know for the ultimate Virginia Beach vacation. v

Virginia Beach—

Three Beaches, One Amazing vacation!

ome of those who have never visited Virginia Beach before automatically assume that the city is made up of only one resort area with a bustling boardwalk lined with hotels, shops and restaurants. Although Virginia Beach is home to such a boardwalk that runs three miles long and connects seaside shopping, great food, plenty of entertainment and miles of beach—that’s not all that makes up this amazing beach destination. In fact, the Resort area of Virginia Beach is just one of three beaches to choose from while on your vacation. Whether you prefer to be near all the action at the Oceanfront, relax and explore the open waters in Sandbridge, or keep it calm while enjoying outdoor family fun in the Chesapeake Bay

area, the three distinct beaches found in Virginia Beach truly do provide something for everyone.

Located in the heart of Virginia Beach is the iconic Oceanfront boardwalk home to a variety of hotels,

restaurants, shops and live entertainment for all ages. Along the boardwalk, you will find fun and exciting activities for every family member to enjoy. As the soul of the city, the Oceanfront is home to some of the most popular destinations you can find in the area and is known for its endless entertainment—especially in the summer time. Bike along the boardwalk path and catch the sunset on the beach, pack a blanket and sit in front of the 31st Street Stage where live music and performances play all night long

or dine on an outdoor patio and indulge in fresh seafood that came straight off the dock. With 28 miles of beach to roam in the Resort area, there are plenty of activities to do both on and off the water with the whole family. If you would like to experience the Resort area in its truest form, try one of the many adventurous activities available! Rent a surfboard and catch some waves, go jet skiing in the Atlantic or catch an aerial view of Virginia Beach while parasailing. But that’s certainly not all there is to do. You can go on a kayak tour through the open waters, climb aboard a ship and go exploring for dolphins or discover the serene waters of Virginia Beach as you paddle board through a scenic water tour. All of these fun and exciting

activities are just some of the outdoor opportunities available for those who are looking to spice up their vacation. The Resort area can be just as relaxing as it is adventurous. Spend an evening at one of the many restaurants along the boardwalk and listen to music while enjoying a delicious appetizer or simply grab a drink or two and then walk down the beach and catch the sunset. Or cast a line at the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier on 15th street where you will find some of the best fishing in the area. If you are looking for the latest beach attire or would like to take a part of Virginia Beach home with you, browse through the many shops all along Pacific and Atlantic Avenue for some great beachside shopping. There are numerous monuments and sculptures to stop and snap a photo of such as the 34-foot cast bronze statue of King Neptune on 31st Street. Take a break from the sun and visit one of the nearby museums that offer indoor opportunities which will certainly amaze you. The Old Coast Guard Station on 24th Street and Pacific Avenue now offers new exhibits all summer long and a Ghostwalk featuring a stroll along the boardwalk, hearing stories of tragic shipwrecks, pirates who plundered the coast and other eerie tales. The nightlife at the Resort area brings some of the best entertainment around. Whether you are looking to ride exciting rides at the amusement park, watch amazing street performers or perhaps attempt to win the biggest prize at the video arcade, you will find what you are looking for without ever needing to leave the boardwalk. There are even live concert events throughout the summer right on the beach such as the American Music Festival, Blues at the Beach Festival and Sandstock. If you are traveling with an older crowd, there are plenty of bars to choose from that offer everything from great deals to high class atmospheres.

Located just 15 miles south of the Resort area is the secluded beach hideaway known as Sandbridge Beach. Home to a plethora of beach

houses, several unique dining destinations, miles of pristine beach and dunes, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Little Island Park, Sandbridge Beach is a relaxing and peaceful community with amazing opportunities. On the drive down to Sandbridge, you will find several farm stands offering local fresh seafood and produce, a variety of garden vegetables, fruits, canned goods, breads and cakes, fresh cut flowers and much more. You will also find a local surf shop offering surf camps and lessons, kayak tours, rentals for surfboards, stand up paddle boards, bikes, beach equipment as well as clothing, footwear, accessories and more. Once you hit the coast, there are several unique pit stops you can take before hitting the beach from restaurant, raw bar and pizza joint with a view to a seaside market with groceries, cold drinks, a sandwich bar and full wine cellar. You will also find a new steamed seafood eatery in the Sandbridge Shoppes and a coffee shop in South Sandbridge. Sandbridge is the perfect place to truly relax 18 | virginiabeach.guide | 2015/2016

Experience a

Ghost Walk

T

he Old Coast Guard Station building is over 100 years old, a true historic treasure of Virginia Beach. It’s probably not a big surprise that it’s haunted. So when you take a Ghost Walk on the Museum’s “Shipwrecks & Ghost Lore” tour, there is a good chance that your guide will be sharing a story that’s a first hand encounter. The ghost stories started when the building was being renovated in the 1970s to become the maritime museum it is today. Construction workers complained of their tools being moved and the never-ending sensation of being watched. Some walked off the job. A museum legend repeated through the decades is of a figure and/or light seen in the building’s old watchtower. Witnesses tell of a uniformed figure outside on the catwalk in the middle of the night. When this Life-Saving Station was in service, crewmembers, known as “Surfmen,” stood watch in the tower, searching the forbidding seas for sailing ships in distress. The observed light has been reported as moving “like a swinging lantern” or as if it is being carried. You’ll get wrapped up in many more eerie tales of hauntings and the unexplained during your 90-minute stroll. Costumed storytellers lead you through an easy walk that explores the beach, boardwalk and along several blocks of the oceanfront. Along with stories of local haunted hotels and restaurants, you’ll experience amazing shipwreck tales, discover the real “Blackbeard”, get to know the “Witch of Pungo” and learn of the famous “Sleeping Prophet of Virginia Beach.” Reservations are encouraged and the tour may not be suitable for younger children. So put on some comfortable shoes and get ready to ask yourself…do you believe in ghosts? Editorial Courtesy of The Old Coast Guard Station

Heading south on the other side of town in Sandbridge Beach you will find False Cape State Park, one of the last remaining undeveloped areas along the Atlantic coast. This historic Wash Woods community allows you to experience nature in a unique way through one of the guided kayak trips, primitive camping, interpretive programs, hiking and biking trails, fishing, geocaching and six miles of the beautiful Atlantic Ocean beach. Located next to the park is the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, a 4,589 acre refuge home to a variety of habitats including beach, dunes, agricultural fields, woodlands and emergent marshes. There are over eight miles of scenic trails where you can witness these habitats firsthand along with freshwater and surf fishing, interpretive special events, boating and bicycling. Go kayaking or canoeing through the Bay and explore nature up close and personal while witnessing wildlife such as deer, bobcats, river otters and a variety of birds. The adventure continues outside of Virginia Beach as well! Just a 30 minute drive from the Resort area is the city of Norfolk home to a variety of shopping, dining, entertainment and adventurous activities such as Norfolk Harbor Sailing Cruises. Climb aboard the American-Victory Rover offering daytime and sunset cruises on the Elizabeth River and the Port of Virginia. With a shaded upper deck, air-conditioned below deck area, a ship store, a cash or tab bar, special event cruises and private charters, the American-Victory Rover gives you the chance to set sail in a unique way. Another cruise available is the Victory Rover, a two hour narrated Naval Base cruise that provides an intriguing narration by the Captain as you explore the Elizabeth River and witness one of the world’s largest and busiest naval sea ports, home to the Atlantic Fleet. In Downtown Waterfront Norfolk you will find Town Point Park, the area’s premier venue where Festevents hosts a variety of festivals, concerts, Tall Ship visits and celebrations. An extensive 10 month schedule of diverse events provides plenty of fun for the whole family to enjoy in two popular and welcoming environments along the Elizabeth River and Ocean View Beach Park. Also in Downtown Norfolk is the Spirit of Norfolk, a cruise ship offering dining, dancing to live music, skyline sights and an up close look at the Navy’s Atlantic Fleet. The Spirit of Norfolk offers lunches, dinner, midnight cruises and tons of fun! In Norfolk, you will also find The Virginia Zoo where you can witness more than 400 Explore nature up close animals on 53 goron creeks off Back Bay. geously landscaped acres. The zoo is home to lions, the red panda, giraffes, gibbons, elephants and more as well as educational opportunities and entertainment. Just across the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel is Hampton, a 400-year old city home to a variety of opportunities. Take a harbor boat tour aboard the Miss Hampton II, a two and a half to three hour tour that departs from Historic Hampton Downtown and explores the waters of Captain John Smith and the First Settlers. While weather permits, the tour also stops for a 30-minute walking tour of the Civil War Island Fortress of Fort Wool. Just outside of Norfolk in the city of Portsmouth is the Schooners Alliance and Serenity, a ship where guests are able to lend a hand at setting sail, search for wildlife or try the Pirate Adventure Cruise where you can steer the schooner, fire a cannon and more—this is your chance to live like a true pirate for an afternoon! v

ust around the corner from the boardwalk is a small marina community overflowing with activity. Rudee Inlet, a short, five-minute walk across Pacific Avenue from Fifth Street at the beach, is the place to go for boating and fishing charters, water activities and excellent seafood restaurants. To truly experience Rudee Inlet, just meander around the docks and watch the fishing boats and sport boats coming and going. Drool over the irresistible aromas of fresh seafood being prepared at any of the inlet’s famous waterfront restaurants. Ride with the dolphins or soar with the seagulls on one of the many water sports adventures. And finally, toast to family and friends as the sun sets on another perfect day in Virginia Beach. Now you can experience all Rudee Inlet has to offer without stepping foot in the car or on the pedal. Catch the Wave—the Hampton Roads Transit Shuttle that encircles Rudee Inlet via Route 34, Memorial Day through Labor Day. There’s also a great new way to get from the Rudee Inlet to the Oceanfront via the Rudee Inlet Connector Walk. This 10-foot-wide

concrete walkway connects Winston Salem Avenue, under the Rudee Inlet Bridge, to the 4th Street parking lot. The walkway improves the mobility and safety of pedestrians and cyclists with a lighted, direct linkage from the Marina district to the Oceanfront. With the Rudee Walk comes the necessary improvements for the water taxi launch beneath the bridge. By this time next year, the water taxi will take riders from the inlet through Lake Rudee to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. The service may even be expanded to include stops on the marina district. The project will include a dock for the water taxi as well as a park specially created so that those anticipating the taxi may relax as they wait. As the headquarters for both offshore and inshore fishing charters, Rudee Inlet has all you need to plan the ultimate fishing excursion. Choose from a variety of half, full-day or even night time trips with experienced captains who know the best fishing spots around. Many charters are air conditioned, and their staff will provide you with all the tackle and gear you’ll need to reel in some prize winners. If fishing isn’t your thing, you’ll definitely enjoy

Locals and visitors alike know that Rudee Inlet is known for having some of the best restaurants in Coastal Virginia. [ arts & entertainment ] Local and National Music Whether it is a neighborhood beach bar featuring a live local band or a large outdoor venue delivering the latest up-and-coming rock stars, Virginia Beach certainly does not lack in the music department. Dive into the local music scene with a live band at the Oceanfront. There are plenty of hot spots offering delicious pub grub and an entertaining blend of folk, alternative, hard rock and acoustic acts. For an evening of music under the stars, head to the Farm Bureau Live Amphitheatre, a grand outdoor venue that provides cheap lawn seating to worth-every-penny front row seats and showcases the summer’s hottest musicians. Museums and Art If dismal weather rains on your vacation parade, check out the Virginia Beach museum and art scene. This summer, the Virginia MOCA (Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art) will feature five different exhibits throughout the entire summer displaying incredible and one-of-kind works by inspiring artists. Local collections of art are always available, and they are the best way to bring some of Virginia Beach’s culture home with you. One of the places visitors can admire these local treasures is at the 21st Street Gallery on Birdneck Road. The gallery features photography as well as paintings and jewelry, all reflective of the oceanfront’s artistic talents. More local artistry can be seen at The Artists Gallery, which showcases mixed media pieces, pottery and photography, all colorfully decorated among the gallery’s walls. The story of the American Revolution, from the beginnings of colonial unrest to the formation of the new nation, unfolds at the Yorktown Victory Center through indoor exhibits and outdoor re-creations of a Continental Army encampment and Revolution-period farm. produce and meat. Downtown isn’t the only place to find eclectic entrees. A host of restaurants dot the streets of Ghent, the historic Freemason district, Ocean View and other areas of the city. If history is your thing, sign up for a boat or land tour of the world’s largest Naval Base, stop by the MacArthur Memorial, or walk the Cannonball Trail. You can jam out to some of the nation’s best music at the NorVA, named “Venue that Rocks” the hardest by Rolling Stone magazine. There are antique shops, coffee houses & galleries galore in the hip, historic Ghent district just a few minutes from downtown. There is truly something for everyone here! NORFOLK SOUTHERN

Clothing, tools, locomotive and train parts, maps, and advertisements are among the more than 500 artifacts dating to the 1830s showcased in the Norfolk Southern Museum. Exhibits include a locomotive simulator; a 900-pound railroad coupler; photographs of workers past and present; and diagrams used to teach hand signals and lantern use to railroad trainees. The history of Norfolk Southern belongs not only to the company, but to the communities it serves and to generations of workers. Norfolk Southern’s history has shaped its path as one of the nation’s premier transportation companies, with 20,000 route miles in 22 states.

PORTSMOUTH City of Portsmouth

One visit to Portsmouth and you’ll be hooked. Amble along our famous Seawall. Go antiquing. Take in some art. Stroll through three centuries of historic neighborhoods. Stand inside a giant soap bubble at the largest children’s museum in Virginia. And did we mention that Portsmouth is home to some of the most delightful restaurants in the region? Many of Portsmouth’s attractions are clustered within easy walking distance, making it the perfect place to spend a day. And with its central location, it’s easy to get to – less than an hour from Colonial Williamsburg and minutes from Virginia Beach.

SouthBeach Where Shops, Parks and Unique Dining Meets Sand and Surf

N

estled between the bustling beaches at the Oceanfront and the lazy shores of Sandbridge, South Beach is a swiftly expanding area which blends seamlessly with its neighboring communities. Boasting everything from high-impact waterslides to lush parks and gardens, South Beach allows one to embrace the best of both worlds. The perfect meshing of quiet and cosmopolitan, this four-mile stretch is bursting with family-friendly activities, a host of local shops and restaurants perfect for a weekend getaway and a wealth of parks and gardens to set the scene for a romantic afternoon with a loved one. As you head south and pass over the Rudee Inlet Bridge from the Oceanfront with the Atlantic Ocean to your left and Owl’s Creek to your right, you are entering a very popular commercial destination only minutes from the Resort area. At the base of the bridge, Pacific Avenue turns into General Booth Boulevard, and the Resort strip gives way to a quiet oceanfront neighborhood with Camp Pendleton to the east. To the west is a wooded stretch of land buffering Owl’s Creek. Along this stretch are some of the area’s most famous attractions, including the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, Motor World and Ocean Breeze Waterpark. A great trail for biking, running and walking meanders through the woods parallel to the road and a large boat ramp adjacent to the Virginia Aquarium offers a scenic ocean view. Just past Ocean Breeze and Motor World sits the Owl’s Creek Tennis Complex, Virginia Beach’s largest campgrounds and Red Wing Park with its unique gardens, sports fields and open playground. Not too much further down the road, you will find Hunt Club Farm, a 28-acre family-owned and operated farm that raises livestock, provides educational field trips and features agricultural-based entertainment. Gather the family and come experience pony rides in the summer, a Pumpkin Patch in the fall and Winter Wonderland in the winter. Hunt Club is also home to the only Petting Farm in the area with dozens of friendly goats, sheep, chickens, llamas, donkeys, pigs, alpacas and more. You can observe a beautiful bird aviary filled with peacocks, crowned cranes, doves and pheasants. Plan a birthday or group party here, sign your child up for summer camp or simply come for the day for some family fun on the farm! Visit the Strawbridge Shopping Center on General Booth for fine dining, entertainment and shopping. The commercial area is also home to other entertainment and diversions, including a newly renovated movie theater, a recreational center and a number of service businesses. Here you’ll also find Either Ore Jewelers, a locally owned and operated family business carrying exquisite lines of jewelry to include platinum, gold and sterling silver. Best of all, they offer such a varied selection that for years they’ve been able to meet the needs—and budgets—of locals and vacationers searching for that special something to take home with them. Being in businesses for over a decade now, the owners are proud to be known as “Your Neighborhood Jeweler.”

Continuing south will bring you to a mecca of shopping destinations and excellent eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Red Mill Commons, an up-and-coming area of South Beach, is right before you hit Sandbridge Road and is one of the beach’s largest shopping centers with new shops and eateries being added throughout the year. With big name retail stores, locally owned shops, a variety of dining options and even a giant pond where you can cast a line, Red Mill Commons offers a unique mix of family friendly activities in a refreshing and dynamic atmosphere. Nestled in a beautiful neighborhood located off Sandbridge Road is Hell’s Point Golf, a Rees Jones Signature Course with an 18-hole championship golf course that runs through the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Further into the Pungo area of South Beach is the latest masterpiece by Arnold Palmer Course Design known as The Signature at West Neck Golf Club. This championship golf course offers thirteen lakes, several picturesque natural wetlands, challenging holes, a 24,000 square foot clubhouse and a delicious restaurant, making The Signature an award-winning course incomparable in the Tidewater area.

‘‘

…South Beach allows one to embrace the best of both worlds.

‘‘

As you’re making your way to Sandbridge Beach, you’ll notice many quaint farm stands set up alongside the road. These are the best places to find ripe, local produce—some that were possibly hand-picked that morning. Pay these stands a visit on your way into South Beach if you’re looking to prepare a freshfrom-the-farm meal, or stop by on your way home to savor the local goodies after your vacation. It’s easy to get swept away in the tranquil atmosphere of Sandbridge, offering both the excitement of the beach and the peacefulness of being on the bay. Take advantage of this quiet serenity by spending some time exploring Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. More than 300 species of birds have been spotted at the refuge, including endangered species like the bald eagle. Catch glimpses of wild horses coming from the refuge, and keep an eye out for Loggerhead sea turtles. There are also over eight miles of scenic trails, freshwater and surf fishing available and bicycle paths. Whether you come for a day of family fun, a reconnection with nature or a peaceful retreat away from it all, you’re sure to find all this and more just across the bridge in South Beach. v

lthough Virginia Beach is known for its tremendous selection of seafood, there are some oceanic species that are underpopulated and therefore shouldn’t be fished year-round to protect the ocean’s natural ecosystem. To make locals and visitors more aware of this, the Virginia Aquarium created the Sensible Seafood Program. The program educates people about the different seafood available in our area and which ones are the best to choose to help sustain the environment. Sensible Seafood has published a color-coded pocket guide, which lets the general public know which seafood is the best buy compared to others. By creating awareness among consumers, the program will help the mid-Atlantic region purchase seafood that is harvested from the area without disrupting the habitat. Sensible Seafood also supports the local fishers, shrimpers and crabbers who make their living. The Sensible Seafood board meets annually to discuss the most current statistics to keep the program up-to-date with the most accurate measurements. The pocket guide is a great companion to a shopping list and is a good helper for deciding a dish when dining out. Many restaurants in Virginia Beach even contribute to the program, offering to only serve seafood that is approved by the pocket guide. In conjunction to local restaurants, the Virginia Aquarium also pledged to the environmentally friendly program by following the Sensible Seafood guidelines. Considering Virginia is the third largest producer of seafood in the country, it’s a sensible program that aims to keep locals in the loop about the area’s habitat and safety. v

Craft Beer Brew Trail

C

raft beer has made an impact across the United States over recent years and has especially grown in popularity on the East Coast. In 2012, there were nearly 40 breweries in the state of Virginia and just a few years later that number has grown to more than 60. No matter where you are staying while vacationing in Virginia Beach, you will find a brewery either within walking distance or just a quick drive away. Each brewery offers a diverse selection of craft beer that reflects the personality of its owners and satisfies the taste buds of its drinkers! Start your journey of craft beer tastings at Back Bay Brewing Co. located on Norfolk Avenue, a fairly new but extremely popular brewery in the Oceanfront area. Founded in 2011 by a group of native friends, Back Bay serves a unique set of craft beers which represent the character of Virginia Beach such as Witch of Pungo, False Cape Ale, Steel Pier Bohemian Lager and Beach Cruiser Pale Ale. With its rotating taps, good music and laid back atmosphere, Back Bay is a great place to get together for some good times and great craft beer. Located right on the boardwalk is 11th Street Taphouse home to great food, friendly service, live entertainment and some of the best brews at the beach. Just a few streets over on 22nd Street is the Beatles-inspired Abbey Road Pub and Restaurant home to 101 draft and craft beers from around the world on tap. Close by on Laskin Road is Home Republic, a veteran and locally owned brewpub, restaurant and wine shop. Home Republic’s mission is to make each customer feel at home by sharing their passion for good beer, food and wine. In addition to their beer brewed on-site, they have local craft beer on draft, an extensive bottle list and upscale Americana cuisine that is made with high quality ingredients. Head north onto Shore Drive where you will find Pleasure House Brewing, a locally owned brewery with five main taps and three experimental taps that rotate throughout the year. Just outside of the Resort area are even more breweries to sample local craft beers. Off of General Booth Boulevard and Dam Neck Road is Young Veterans Brewing Co. founded and operated by two natives who once served in the Army. The owners and their staff pay close attention to detail when it comes to producing craft beer, which is why you will find an excellent selection of brews inspired by their time serving the country such as Pineapple Grenade, Night Vision and Jet Noise. Also off Dam Neck Road is Reaver Beach Brewing Co. offering flights, pints, growlers and a spacious taproom with 10 taps spewing out freshly made beer. The newlyweds who founded the brewery in 2010 continue to seek creative, assertive, flavorful beer with a focus on quality ingredients.

‘‘

Home to restaurants, shops and special events in a lively and modern atmosphere, Town Center should definitely be on your list of destinations while searching for the finest Virginia Beach craft beer. Here you will find Gordon Biersch Brewing Company, a stateof-the-art brewing company serving German-style biers that are pure, precise and perfected. Each beer uses authentic Bavarian Hersbruker hops, high quality Weyermann Malt from Bamberg and a range of well-balanced flavors. If your stomach starts to grumble, there is a full menu with a variety of delicious options. Also in Town Center is Yard House, which took its name from the 3-foot tall glass containers, originally designed in Great Britain. In Norfolk’s Ghent district you will find several unique breweries that will satisfy your craft beer cravings. The owner of O’Connor Brewing Co. first started brewing his own beer in his backyard and now owns a massive brewery with a huge beer hall, beautiful new tasting room with a 24-tap bar, a game room, movie theater-style projector and VIP area. They offer year-round beers as well as seasonal and limited releases that are so good it may upset you once they’re gone! Norfolk is also home to Smartmouth Brewing Co., a once homebrew experimentation that is now one of the Southeast’s most popular startup breweries. Located on the banks of the Elizabeth River, the 20-barrel brewhouse churns out about 500 kegs a year and includes a 1,100 square foot tasting room and a pet-friendly deck. You can taste their unique and seasonal beers both in their tasting room and around town at various restaurants. Imported beer can be found anywhere; it’s the local craft breweries that leave visitors and residents longing for a taste and always craving more. No matter where you choose to sample beach-inspired craft beer, chances are you will find a new favorite to keep coming back for every year. So, come have a taste of local flavor, and raise a glass, a pint or a growler to homegrown drinks in Virginia Beach. v

Get ready to Tee Off at Some of the Best Courses on the Coast

S

ummon your inner PGA Pro and tee off at one of the many firstrate courses in Coastal Virginia, including on the Eastern Shore. As the largest city in the Commonwealth, Coastal Virginia is home to more than a dozen golf courses, each with a distinctive layout and atmosphere. From the coastal marshes and sand dunes of Sandbridge to the farmland and forests further inland, Virginia Beach’s varying terrain creates a wonderful canvas for any golf architect. Famous course designers such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Freddy Couples, Curtis Strange, Pete Dye and more have all lent their talents molding this seaside landscape into stunning fairways and greens, creating championship courses and many memorable holes. In addition both Chesapeake and Norfolk offer courses that challenge all levels of golfers. There are, as a matter of fact, more than 306 holes across Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Norfolk, many with fairways framed by towering pines, coastal wetlands, lakes, rivers and streams. Don’t be surprised if you are joined by herons, deer and other wildlife, even just a few miles away from the bustling boardwalk. The natural beauty of this area shines through at all area courses, providing a serene environment for total relaxation. But don’t get too relaxed. There are definitely some challenging holes throughout all of Coastal Virginia’s courses—challenging enough that golfers keep coming back again and again to lower their handicap. Of course, most courses were designed with both the professional and beginner in mind, so even a first-time golfer can enjoy a day out on the links at nearly all of the nearby courses. Most golf courses also offer lessons for every level of golfer. Whether you need to tweak your swing or get a full introduction to the game, onsite pros are there to help. Club rentals are also available. v

Health & Beauty

A

vacation at the beach is the ultimate way to unwind—you can lounge in the sun, play games with the kids, eat amazing food and totally forget about all the worries that await you at home. But while you are letting loose, why not take the opportunity to give your body some much needed attention? Many people throw health and fitness out the window when they go on vacation, but it is actually the perfect time to challenge and pamper your body. Use your free time to get active and jumpstart your fitness routine. Head to a local gym and sweat it out, or try some fun (and calorieburning!) activities like surfing, biking or kayaking. Afterward, reward yourself at Balance Therapeutic Massage on Laskin Road for a relaxing afternoon. They have many different types of massages available such as Swedish,

deep tissue, hot stone, Thai, sports and foot massages. A few recent additions to Balance Therapeutic are the Young Living Aromatherapy Raindrop Technique and Castor Oil Packs, both highly recommended treatments to improve and maintain good health. Feel your cares drift away as your muscles relax into a state of bliss for 30 minutes, 60 minutes or 90 minutes. They also offer massage packages and couples massages. Another tranquil place to visit for pure relaxation and body therapy is Edgar Cayce’s A.R.E. at 67th Street. Some of their services are acupressure, various types of massages, hydrotherapies such as cedar cabinet steam/fume baths, Epsom salt baths and facials and boutique therapies including Reiki and spiritual life counseling. They also offer various spa packages, holistic clinical work and wellness retreats. Whatever the treatment, your body will thank you. And you’ll be even more ready to enjoy your time in the sun. v

any couples who get swept away in the natural beauty of Virginia Beach return later to tie the knot. Having a ceremony on the beach is a memorable experience and a beautiful way to start a new life together. Here are some tips to help you get started! Location: If you wish to have a small ceremony on the beach, no permit is necessary; however, if you would like to cordon off a portion of the beach for a maximum of 3 hours, then you may apply for a Beach Wedding permit. Attire for her: The beauty of a beach wedding is that brides don’t have to buy an extravagant, heavy dress with a full-length train. Instead, they can opt for something light and flowy. Some couples decide on no shoes as well! Attire for him: No groom should suffer in the

hot sun while wearing a black suit. Guys can dress down in linen or cotton in shades of tan, grey or white. Cake: There are many fabulous bakeries in the area, and since beach weddings are so popular, most are accustomed to creating coastal cakes complete with seashells, edible sand and Adirondack chairs. Décor: The Virginia Beach Wedding Chapel offers decorations such as bamboo arches, custom-made floral headers, shell strands, seashell art and paths.

To Beach or Not to Beach?

How do you know if a beach wedding is right for you? Here are some tips from Virginia Beach Wedding Chapel to help you decide if a sandy ceremony is in your future. • Couples considering this type of ceremony should be free spirited and relaxed. • Brides shouldn’t be bothered by the little things—like getting the hem of their wedding gown wet or sandy. • Couples should enjoy feeling the surf tugging at their toes and the music of waves crashing against the shore. Virginia Beach Wedding Chapel specializes in destination beach weddings, elopement packages and classic wedding packages. Visit www.virginiabeachweddingchapel.com to read exclusive advice for getting married on the beach, as well as which location is right for you. v

Under the Big Top! Cirque du Soleil to Perform Under the Big Top in Virginia Beach

C

irque du Soleil is thrilled to bring KOOZA, an adrenaline rush of acrobatics in a zany kingdom, to Virginia Beach for the first time ever! Premiering on Thursday, July 16th for a limited run through August 16th at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, KOOZA is the story of The Innocent, a melancholy loner in search of his place in the world. The show combines two circus traditions—acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. Highlights of the show include the physical demands of human performance in all its splendor and fragility presented in a colorful mélange that emphasizes bold slapstick humor. The Innocent’s journey brings him into contact with a panoply of comic characters such as the King, the Trickster, the Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog. Between strength and frailty, laughter and smiles, turmoil and harmony, KOOZA explores themes of fear, identity, recognition and power. Sponsored by Live Nation, the show is set in an electrifying and exotic visual world full of surprises, thrills, chills, audacity and total involvement. KOOZA is inspired by the Sanskrit word “koza,” which means “box,” “chest” or “treasure,” and was chosen because one of the underlying concepts of the production is the idea of a “circus in a box.” Since its premiere in April of 2007, KOOZA has performed over 2,700 shows in 43 cities, in 12 different countries, on 3 different continents and has had over 4 million spectators and counting. Find out where the show is performing after Virginia Beach at www.cirquedusoleil.com/kooza. Order Tickets for Cirque du Soleil Here!
