What’s New in 2016

rom beach to bay, sand to sidewalk, Virginia Beach is way more than your average beach town. With the world’s longest pleasure beach, an award-winning boardwalk, a cosmopolitan downtown, more than 35 miles of ocean and bay beaches and the most visited nature park in the state, it’s no wonder more than 3 million people visit this exciting resort town each year. A day in Virginia Beach begins and ends at the Oceanfront. Joggers hit the 3-mile-long boardwalk in the early morning hours as the sun rises over the Atlantic. As more and more folks wander out of their hotel rooms to stake a place in the sand, the beach livens up with colorful beach towels dotting the wide sandy beaches, families on surreys cruising down the boardwalk and friends meeting up for a surf, swim or stroll. With beaches wider than a football field, there’s plenty of room to stretch out on the sand, throw a Frisbee or build a sandcastle or two. During the summer, Beach Street USA takes over the Oceanfront with nightly entertainment and festivals. Fireworks light up the evening sky weekly during July and August, and multiple special events and festivals bring even more activity nearly every weekend. The bustling Oceanfront is a flurry of activity throughout the day and into the night, when people flock to the boardwalk for oceanfront dining, live music, family fun and romantic adventures. Traveling with your honey? Virginia Beach is the No. 1 spot for you and your sweetie, according to OpenTable’s roundup of the 25 Most Romantic Cities in America for 2016.

app.virginiabeach.guide The GoGuide App is your No. 1 travel companion while on vacation in Virginia Beach! This reliable, easy-to-use free app helps you navigate around the area and locate local restaurants, businesses, shopping areas, services and more with the touch of a button. Whether you are looking for fun activities, places to shop or simply a good deal, the Virginia Beach GoGuide will make you feel like a true local while you’re on vacation! Download the app today! Jungle Golf Swing into summer with a round of mini-golf at the newly renovated Jungle Golf! After a damaging 2014 fire, the owners have remodeled and revamped the property to bring you the same tropical experience that you’ve known and loved for more than 40 years. Skee Ball, pinball and Ms. Pac-Man are newcomers to the game room. Then, make sure you get a view of Pacific Avenue from the new Base Camp deck, an air-conditioned tiki hut where you can enjoy a snack, ice cream and more.

In a city as large and diverse as Virginia Beach, you never know where the day might take you. You could be teeing off at one of the championship courses, kayaking through pristine coastal marshes, swimming with a friendly bottlenose dolphin or learning about the first colonists who set foot on American soil. Venture just an hour away from the beach and ride the world’s tallest, floorless rollercoaster, relive a Civil War battle or explore a Colonial village. Virginia Beach and the surrounding region are rich in history, culture and— most importantly—fun. World-class museums and important historic sights complement amusement parks and entertainment venues, while festivals throughout the year celebrate everything from art to she crab soup to Virginia wine. All this with the beautiful backdrop of an endless ocean and peaceful bay make Virginia Beach one of the finest and safest seaside getaways in the country. In 2015, Virginia Beach placed No. 4 on Law Street Media’s “Crime in America 2016: Top 10 Safest Cities Over 200,000,” and The Virginian-Pilot reported that Virginia Beach’s crime rate is the lowest it’s been since 1963. This Visitors Guide provides all the essential information for exploring this beautiful oceanfront town. From the eclectic shops to gourmet restaurants, you’ll find all you need to know for the ultimate Virginia Beach vacation.

Enjoy your stay! ViBe Creative District Blossoming in the Resort area of Virginia Beach, the ViBe Creative District is alive with art initiatives and local businesses, many of which have opened in the last year alone. Stretching from 17th to 24th Street, the ViBe Creative District includes more than 30 local businesses. Peruse eclectic home décor, grab brunch at a sustainable café, explore a contemporary art museum, marvel at handmade, high-quality leather bags and much more all within a few blocks. Head to this growing district of fresh creativity and feel the ViBe! Topgolf Golf goes to the next level with touch-screen TVs, micro-chipped golf balls and upbeat music at Topgolf. The 65,000-square-foot facility features climate-controlled hitting bays allowing for a comfortable round of golf no matter the weather. Bring your clubs—or borrow theirs, which include men’s, women’s and left-handed—your friends and an appetite to enjoy delicious, innovative cuisine while sitting at a high-top table or lounging on the couches. One thing’s for certain—silence is not necessary.

Three Beaches, ng One Amazi Vacation The Resort, Island and Bay areas of Virginia Beach provide a beach for everyone

S

ome of those who have never visited Virginia Beach before automatically assume that the city is made up of only one area with a bustling boardwalk lined with hotels, shops and restaurants. Although Virginia Beach is home to the aforementioned boardwalk that runs 3 miles long and connects seaside shopping, great food, plenty of entertainment and miles of beach—that’s not all that makes up this unforgettable beach destination. In fact, the Resort area of Virginia Beach is just one of three beaches to choose from while on your vacation. When you prefer to be near all the action at the oceanfront, relax and explore the open waters in Sandbridge, head to the Island. At the Bay, keep it calm while enjoying outdoor family fun in the Chesapeake Bay area.

The Resort With 28 miles of beach to roam in the Resort area, there are plenty of activities to do both on and off the water with the whole family. If you would like to experience the Resort area in its truest form, try one of the many adventurous activities available! Rent a surfboard and catch some waves, go jet skiing in the Atlantic, or catch an aerial view of Virginia Beach while parasailing. But that’s certainly not all there is to do here. You can go on a kayak tour through the open waters, climb aboard a ship and go exploring for dolphins, or discover the serene waters of Virginia Beach as you paddle through a scenic water tour. All of these fun and exciting activities are just some of the outdoor opportunities available for those who are looking to spice up their vacation.

Located in the heart of Virginia Beach and in this distinct area is the iconic Oceanfront Boardwalk home to a variety of hotels, restaurants, shops and live entertainment for all ages. Along the boardwalk, you will find fun and exciting activities for every family member to enjoy. As the soul of the city, the oceanfront is home to some of the most popular destinations you can find in the area and is known for its endless entertainment—especially in the summertime. Bike along the boardwalk path and catch the sunset on the beach, pack a blanket and sit in front of the 31st Street Stage where live music and performances play all night long, or dine on an outdoor patio and indulge in fresh seafood that came straight from the Atlantic. The Resort area can be just as relaxing as it is adventurous. Spend an evening at one of the many restaurants along the boardwalk. Listen to music while enjoying a delicious appetizer, or simply grab a drink or two and walk down the beach to catch the sunset. Cast a line at the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier on 15th street, where you will find some of the best fishing in the area. If you are looking for the latest beach attire or would like to take a part of Virginia Beach home with you, browse through the many shops all along Pacific and Atlantic Avenues for some great beachside shopping. There are numerous monuments and sculptures to stop and snap a photo, such as the 34-foot cast bronze statue of King Neptune on 31st Street. Then, take a break from the sun and visit one of the nearby museums that offer indoor opportunities, which will certainly amaze you. The Old Coast Guard Station on 24th Street and Pacific Avenue offers new exhibits all summer long as well as a Ghostwalk featuring a stroll along the boardwalk while you hear stories of tragic shipwrecks, pirates who plundered the coast and other eerie tales.

The nightlife at the Resort area brings some of the best entertainment around. Whether you are looking to ride exciting rides at the amusement park, watch amazing street performers or attempt to win the biggest prize at the video arcade, you will find what you are looking for without ever needing to leave the boardwalk. There are even live concert events throughout the summer right on the beach such as the American Music Festival, Blues at the Beach Festival and Sandstock. If you are traveling with an older crowd, there are plenty of bars to choose from that offer everything from great deals to high-class atmospheres. sandbridge Located just 15 miles south of the Resort area is the secluded beach hideaway known as Sandbridge Beach where you will get a taste for the Island life. Home to a plethora of beach houses, several unique dining destinations, miles of pristine beach and dunes, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Little Island Park, Sandbridge Beach is a relaxing and peaceful community with amazing opportunities. On the drive down to Sandbridge, you will find several farm stands offering local, fresh seafood, a variety of garden vegetables, fruits, canned goods, breads and cakes, fresh-cut flowers and much more. You will also find a local surf shop offering surf camps and lessons, kayak tours, rentals for surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, bikes, beach equipment as well as clothing, footwear, accessories and more. Once you hit the coast, there are several unique pit stops you can take before hitting the beach. Sandbridge is the perfect place to truly relax and unwind while on your beach vacation. The water is always open for activities and the sandy beach is great for corn hole, digging for sand crabs or just people watching while soaking up the sun. If you are craving even greater beach activities, there are beautiful marshes and open waters at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park. These one-of-a-kind and rare beach destinations are great for kayaking, hiking, spotting wildlife and fishing. Farther down Sandpiper Road, you will find Little Island Park, a 123-acre beach park once home to a Coast Guard Station. With a canoe or kayak launch access into Back Bay, the 400-foot Little Island Fishing Pier, picnic tables and more, the beach park is great for large groups, parties or simply for a refreshing day at the beach. Sandbridge is the most eastern part of the Island beach, but there are plenty of other fun activities to do with the family if you want to explore beyond the beach for a day. There are multiple shopping areas, which are full of shops and restaurants all within walking distance from each other. Spend the day perusing all of the special amenities in the area, and then spice up your night at the area’s enormous amphitheater where renowned artists come to rock the stage all summer long. The Bay North of both Sandbridge and Resort areas of Virginia Beach and located just off of Shore Drive is the Bay area where the waves are calmer, and you will find the most picturesque sunset in Virginia Beach. From swimming and sand castle building to hiking and kayaking through marshes, all the traditional beach rituals can also be found here.

a i n i g r i V BeaAcdvhenture Trail A lthough many people come to Virginia Beach to unwind and relax, there is much more to do in the area than soak up the sun on the beach all day. From the Cape Henry region all the way to Sandbridge, you will find that Virginia Beach has an incredible amount of adventurous activities to do that are both fun and safe. Whether you spend the day parasailing over the beautiful Atlantic Ocean, kayaking through scenic marshes or zip lining from one treetop to the next, there is always an exciting way to spend your time in Virginia Beach that every family member can enjoy. While Virginia Beach is absolutely one of the most relaxing coastal vacation locales around, it can also be one of the most exhilarating. It’s peaceful to kick back under an umbrella with your toes in the sand, but for a truly memorable vacation, get out on the water and make some waves of your own! With over 121 navigable miles of waterways and 35 miles of ocean and bay beaches, Virginia Beach is teeming with kayak destinations. Imagine being surrounded by nothing but tranquil waters and pristine landscapes, far away from the crowds, cars and technology. Kayaking is a blissful way to get in touch with the beauty of Virginia Beach’s nature with no engines or propellers. Experience a

Ghost Walk

T

he Old Coast Guard Station building is over 100 years old, a true historic treasure of Virginia Beach. It’s probably not a big surprise that it’s haunted. So when you take a Ghost Walk on the Museum’s “Shipwrecks & Ghost Lore” tour, there is a good chance that your guide will be sharing a story that’s a first-hand encounter. The ghost stories started when the building was being renovated in the 1970s to become the maritime museum it is today. Construction workers complained of their tools being moved and the neverending sensation of being watched. Some walked off the job. A museum legend repeated through the decades is of a figure and/or light seen in the building’s old watchtower. Witnesses tell of a uniformed figure outside on the catwalk in the middle of the night. When this Life-Saving Station was in service, crewmembers, known as “Surfmen,” stood watch in the tower, searching the forbidding seas for sailing ships in distress. The observed light has been reported as moving “like a swinging lantern” or as if it is being carried. You’ll get wrapped up in many more eerie tales of hauntings and the unexplained during your 90-minute stroll. Costumed storytellers lead you through an easy walk that explores the beach, boardwalk and along several blocks of the oceanfront. Along with stories of local haunted hotels and restaurants, you’ll experience amazing shipwreck tales, discover the real “Blackbeard,” get to know the “Witch of Pungo” and learn of the famous “Sleeping Prophet of Virginia Beach.” Reservations are encouraged, and the tour may not be suitable for younger children. So put on some comfortable shoes and get ready to ask yourself … do you believe in ghosts? —Editorial Courtesy of The Old Coast Guard Station

adventure trail For a peaceful afternoon of paddling, head to the local state park where there is endless outdoor fun and public access to the bay coastline. Follow one of the park’s four boardwalks that provide convenient walkways over the dunes and onto the beach for a day of exciting activities. The beach usually stays relatively uncrowded, and the water is perfect for paddleboarding, kayaking or canoeing—but there is much more to do than just paddle. Along with the opportunity to explore lagoons, First Landing State Park is home to a total of nine trails covering more than 19 miles where you can take a gorgeous hike and witness large cypress trees and other plants, as well as a varied assortment of birds including osprey, finch, heron and even bald eagles on rare occasions. If you are in the mood to cast a line, head over to The Narrows, a constricted waterway frequently used by anglers and those who are after blue crab claws. You will also find a boat ramp at The Narrows where you can launch motorboats and other small crafts as well as a kayak rental shop available during in-season weekends. Along with these activities are swimming, biking, boating and even camping! With Adventure Park over 2,800 acres and a wide range of outdoor activities, our local state park is a great place to start your adventurous vacation in Virginia Beach. Just a few miles before the bridge leading to the Resort area of Virginia Beach, you will find an aquarium and marine science center offering over 80,000 gallons of one of the best aquariums and animal habitats in the country, hands-on exhibits, outdoor aviary, nature trails, marshlands and a National Geographic 3-D Theater. But that’s certainly not all. One of the newest and most popular additions to the aquarium is an eco-friendly zip line and aerial adventure experience in the majestic treetops of Owls Creek. Located between the museum’s Marsh Pavilion and the Bay and Ocean Pavilion, this exhilarating “aerial forest park” is the first of its kind in Virginia and is a must-do outdoor experience that the whole family can enjoy! After being securely attached to the safety lines, guests of all ages are welcome to challenge themselves as they walk across wooden platforms at different heights, zip from tree to tree on a zip line or navigate from one bridge to the next. You don’t even have to be Tarzan to master the Adventure Park! Choose from 11 different color-coded trails, from beginner to advanced. The park is a fun and safe activity that gives everyone the chance to experience nature from new heights! Lions and tigers and bears—oh my! If you are looking to stay dry while having fun, head over to 22nd Street and Pacific Avenue for a wild game of mini-golf with each hole being a different difficulty level and always surprising. Discover an indoor game center where visitors and locals alike can enjoy exotic games, laser tag and virtual adventures! If your stomach starts to grumble, take a break from all the fun at the air-conditioned café serving a variety of great tasting treats. A great way to spend an afternoon by the shore is riding a bike or rollerblading down the Oceanfront boardwalk. Not only will you get a little exercise, but you will also experience the heart of Virginia Beach in a fun and relaxing way. Rent bikes, tandems, family bikes, in-line skates and even chairs and umbrellas at affordable prices. If you are walking down the boardwalk and looking to rent a bike, chances are you will spot several bike rental companies that are perfect for you and your family. T

raveling to the remote waterways of Virginia Beach always makes for a fulfilling vacation. While boat access via the Intracoastal Waterway and air travel by charter plane are viable options, most visitors arrive by car via the interstate, so it’s important to choose which route is best for you. One of the most relaxing ways to travel is by the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry System, which is the only 24-hour, state-run ferry in Virginia. For those coming from Williamsburg, the JamestownScotland Ferry carries you through the James River where the first colonists journeyed 400 years ago. Land in historic Surry after a tranquil and scenic 15–20-minute trip before making your way into Virginia Beach. Another northern route takes you along Interstate 95 and onto U.S. 13 before you venture across one of the “Seven Engineering Wonders of the Worldâ€? via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. The Bridge-Tunnel project is a four-lane, 20-mile-long vehicular toll crossing the lower Chesapeake Bay connecting Virginia’s Eastern Shore and south Hampton Roads. Wherever you may be coming from, make the most of your driving experience by enjoying the beautiful scenery, finding unique places to stop—and maybe stay—along the way. No matter how long the journey, remember that once you arrive in relaxing Virginia Beach, it will all be worth it. z COP Virginia Beach Visitors Guide.qxp_Layout 1 10/8/15 5:53 PM Page 1

Choose the level of spiciness you prefer, from mild to medium to “Indian Hot,” and then treat your taste buds to a delicious, fresh and mouthwatering meal. You’ll also find some of the best sushi around, a chocolate shop, comedy club and gelato parlor, among other things. The scene doesn’t quiet down once the sun sets either— Town Center has a vibrant nightlife, with plenty of people hopping from wine bar to Irish pub into the wee hours. Town Center is also home to the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, a true cultural centerpiece for Virginia Beach. The 1,300seat center is a professional-quality facility that celebrates the arts and showcases local, regional and national performing artists. The building’s outdoor performance plaza provides a festive, public space capable of accommodating 400 patrons for festivals, outdoor performances and social activities. See what’s on stage when you’re in town by calling the Sandler Center Box Office at 757-385-ARTS or visiting SandlerCenter.org. Getting to Town Center is an easy 10-minute drive along the interstate from the surf and sand, and you will find more than 3,200 free public parking spaces in covered garages, surface lots and on-street parking. Hampton Roads Transit offers bus service from the Oceanfront. There is also a way to get around inside Town Center—Seven Cities Rickshaws offers a convenient (and eco-friendly) mode of transporting visitors to and from Town Center locations/locales. For a day, a weekend or a lifetime, Town Center really is the center of it all. For more information about the Town Center of Virginia Beach, visit VaBeachTownCenter.com. z

estled between the bustling beaches at the Oceanfront and the lazy shores of Sandbridge, South Beach is a swiftly expanding area which blends seamlessly with its neighboring communities. Boasting everything from high-impact waterslides to lush parks and gardens, South Beach allows one to embrace the best of both worlds. The perfect meshing of quiet and cosmopolitan, this four-mile stretch is bursting with family-friendly activities, a host of local shops and restaurants perfect for a weekend getaway and a wealth of parks and gardens to set the scene for a romantic afternoon with a loved one. As you head south and pass over the Rudee Inlet Bridge from the Oceanfront with the Atlantic Ocean to your left and Owl’s Creek to your right, you are entering a very popular commercial destination only minutes from the Resort area. At the base of the bridge, Pacific Avenue turns into General Booth Boulevard, and the Resort strip gives way to a quiet oceanfront neighborhood with Camp Pendleton to the east. To the west is a wooded stretch of land buffering Owl’s Creek. Along this stretch are some of the area’s most famous attractions, including the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, Motor World and Ocean Breeze Waterpark. A great trail for biking, running and walking meanders through the woods parallel to the road and a large boat ramp adjacent to the Virginia Aquarium offers a scenic ocean view. Just past Ocean Breeze and Motor World sits the Owl’s Creek Tennis Complex, Virginia Beach’s largest campgrounds and Red Wing Park with its unique gardens, sports fields and open playground. Visit the Strawbridge Shopping Center on General Booth for fine dining, entertainment and shopping. The commercial area is also home to other entertainment and diversions, including a newly renovated movie theater, a recreational center and a number of service businesses. Continuing south will bring you to a mecca of shopping destinations and excellent eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Red Mill Commons, an

up-and-coming area of South Beach, is right before you hit Sandbridge Road and is one of the beach’s largest shopping centers with new shops and eateries being added throughout the year. With big name retail stores, locally owned shops, a variety of dining options and even a giant pond where you can cast a line, Red Mill Commons offers a unique mix of family friendly activities in a refreshing and dynamic atmosphere. As you’re making your way to Sandbridge Beach, you’ll notice many quaint farm stands set up alongside the road. These are the best places to find ripe, local produce—some that were possibly hand-picked that morning. Pay these stands a visit on your way into South Beach if you’re looking to prepare a fresh-from-the-farm meal, or stop by on your way home to savor the local goodies after your vacation. It’s easy to get swept away in the tranquil atmosphere of Sandbridge, offering both the excitement of the beach and the peacefulness of being on the bay. Take advantage of this quiet serenity by spending some time exploring Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. More than 300 species of birds have been spotted at the refuge, including endangered species like the bald eagle. Catch glimpses of wild horses coming from the refuge, and keep an eye out for Loggerhead sea turtles. There are also over eight miles of scenic trails, freshwater and surf fishing available and bicycle paths. Whether you come for a day of family fun, a reconnection with nature or a peaceful retreat away from it all, you’re sure to find all this and more just across the bridge in South Beach. z

What is Sensibleod? o f a e S

Promoting seafood choices that make sense for a healthy marine environment

A

lthough Virginia Beach is known for its tremendous selection of seafood, there are some oceanic species that are underpopulated and therefore shouldn’t be fished year-round in order to protect the ocean’s natural ecosystem. To make locals and visitors more aware of this, the Virginia Aquarium created the Sensible Seafood Program. Here’s a glimpse into the vision of the Sensible Seafood Program: • Educates people about the different seafood available in our area and which ones help sustain the environment. • Helps the mid-Atlantic region purchase seafood that is harvested from the area without disrupting the habitat. • Supports the local fishermen, shrimpers and crabbers who make their living when seafood within the Sensible Seafood program is purchased. The Sensible Seafood board meets annually to discuss the most current statistics to keep the program up-to-date with the most accurate measurements. Their pocket guide is a great companion to a shopping list and also assists in decision-making when dining out. Many restaurants in Virginia Beach even contribute to the program, offering to only serve seafood that is approved by the pocket guide. In conjunction to local restaurants, the Virginia Aquarium also pledged to the environmentally friendly program by following the Sensible Seafood guidelines. Considering Virginia is the third largest producer of seafood in the country, it’s a sensible program that aims to keep locals in the loop about the area’s habitat and safety. z

even homemade bread from neighboring bakeries are being served in restaurants. You’ll quickly learn that the sense of community is stronger than ever, especially when it comes to the cuisine scene. Another important aspect of the cuisine scene is the fresh catches you can find here. The bounty of seafood draws visitors to restaurants all over Virginia Beach, and the menu items are often caught that morning. You’ll find tuna, salmon, lobster and other fresh catches, but there’s one item that’s always kept in stock—blue crabs. The classic style of cooking blue crabs, which gives them their signature flavor, is to steam them in large pots with water, vinegar and Old Bay seasoning. Actually, just briefly mentioning Old Bay seasoning wouldn’t give the local Chesapeake Bay crab enough credit. If you are a local or frequent visitor, you know that when crabs are served to you at a restaurant, they are doused in layers upon layers of Old Bay seasoning. While your mouth may be watering from just imagining this succulent meal, others prefer their crab prepared with less Old Bay and with something more nontraditional. You’ll find many opportunities to track down these prized summertime jewels at Virginia Beach’s restaurants, local seafood markets and even farmers markets—just make sure you call ahead because crab feasts are one of Virginia Beach’s favorite pastimes. Now, roll up those sleeves and get to crackin’! Speaking of Virginia Beach’s restaurants, while indoor seating is always an option, why not enjoy a succulent seafood meal overlooking a sunset on the Chesapeake Bay or the sunrise at the boardwalk? There are a variety of restaurants located right on the water, whether it be on a deck with boats docked and live bands playing throughout the summer, or even a relaxing patio at picnic tables that are perfect for enjoying a bite under an umbrella. Some restaurants allow you to drive your boat right up to your table with a view of the Virginia Beach waterways while you enjoy your delectable dinner! If you’re a fan of happy hour, then you are in luck! Virginia Beach offers great deals on delicious cocktails and craft beer, but where you do the sipping and nibbling is the best part. Have a cold one on a hanging swing, enjoy the sand between your toes at the beach, or simply sit at an outside bar to admire the sunset. No matter where you eat, rest assured you’ll get a side of that good old-fashioned coastal charm served with every meal. z

at home by sharing their passion for good beer, food and wine. In addition to their beer brewed on-site, they have local craft beer on draft, an extensive bottle list and upscale Americana cuisine that is made with high-quality ingredients. Head north onto Shore Drive where you will find a locally-owned brewery with five main taps and three experimental taps that rotate throughout the year. If you keep heading north on Shore Drive and turn on Pleasure House Road, make sure you visit the new brewery inside the former Chesapeake Beach Fire & Rescue Station No. 4 equipped with 28 taps. Just outside of the Resort area are even more breweries to sample local craft beers. Off of General Booth Boulevard and Dam Neck Road is a brewery founded and operated by two locals who once served in the Army. The owners and their staff pay close attention to detail when it comes to producing craft beer, which is why you will find an excellent selection of brews inspired by their time serving the country, such as Pineapple Grenade, Night Vision and Jet Noise. Also off of Dam Neck Road is a brewery offering flights, pints, growlers and a spacious taproom with 10 taps overflowing with the tastiest beer. The newlyweds who founded the brewery in 2010 continue to seek creative, assertive and flavorful beer. Home to restaurants, shops and special events in a lively and modern atmosphere, Town Center should definitely be on your list of destinations while searching for the finest Virginia Beach craft beer. Here you will find a state-of-the-art brewing company serving German-style biers that are pure, precise and perfected. Each beer uses authentic Bavarian Hersbruker hops, high-quality Weyermann Malt from Bamberg and a range of well-balanced flavors. If your stomach starts to grumble, there is a full menu with a variety of delicious options. Also in Town Center is a restaurant and brew house, which took its name from the 3-foot-tall glass containers, originally designed in Great Britain. In Norfolk’s Ghent district you will find several unique breweries that will satisfy your craft beer cravings. The owner of one of the Norfolk breweries first started brewing his own beer in his backyard and now owns a massive brewery with an extensive beer hall, beautiful tasting room with a 24-tap bar, a game room, movie theater-style projector and VIP area. They offer year-round beers as well as seasonal and limited releases that are so good you may be upset once they’re gone! Norfolk is also home to a brewery that was once a homebrew experiment and is now one of the Southeast’s most popular startup breweries. Located on the banks of the Elizabeth River, the 20-barrel brew house churns out about 500 kegs each year and includes a 1,100-square-foot tasting room and a pet-friendly deck. You can taste their unique and seasonal beers both in their tasting room and around town at various restaurants. Imported beer can be found anywhere, and that’s why it’s the local craft breweries that leave visitors and residents longing for a taste and always craving more. No matter where you choose to sample beach-inspired craft beer, chances are you will find a new favorite to keep coming back for every year. So, come have a taste of local flavor, and raise a glass, a pint or a growler to homegrown drinks in Virginia Beach. z

raft beer has made an impact across the United States over recent years and has especially grown in popularity on the East Coast. In 2012, there were nearly 40 breweries in the state of Virginia and just a few years later that number has grown to more than 100. No matter where you are staying while vacationing in Virginia Beach, you will find a brewery either within walking distance or just a quick drive away. Each brewery offers a diverse selection of craft beer that reflects the personality of its owners and satisfies the taste buds of its drinkers! Start your journey of craft beer tastings at Norfolk Avenue where you will find a fairly new, but extremely popular, brewery in the Oceanfront area. Founded in 2011 by a group of native friends, the brewery serves a unique set of craft beers, which represent the character of Virginia Beach, such as Witch of Pungo, False Cape Ale, Steel Pier Bohemian Lager and Beach Cruiser Pale Ale. With its rotating taps, good music and laid-back atmosphere, it’s a great place to get together for some good times and great craft beer. Located right on the boardwalk at 11th Street is a taphouse that’s home to great food, friendly service, live entertainment and some of the best brews at the beach. Just a few streets over on 22nd Street is the Beatlesinspired pub and restaurant home to 101 draft and craft beers from around the world. On nearby Laskin Road, discover a veteran and locally-owned brewpub, restaurant and wine shop. This establishment’s mission is to make each customer feel

he whistles sound at 9:30 a.m. sharp as the sun rises for another day on the shores at the Virginia Beach oceanfront. It’s a new day for beachgoers to set up their towels and chairs and for the men and women outfitted in red to stand watch. The Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service (VBLS) dates back to 1929, when Dusty Hinnant was invited to come to Virginia Beach by college roommate John Smith. With Hinnant’s lifeguard experience through tending the lake at a summer camp, he and Smith later founded the Virginia Beach Lifeguard Association in 1932 and began training guards. Nearly 90 years later, the lifeguards continue to serve the beachgoers of Virginia Beach each summer. On average, more than 75 lifeguards work each day to monitor between 1st and 42nd Street, 57th Street and at Croatan, which is located on the other side of the 1st Street jetty. In addition, supervisors also patrol the streets between 43rd and 89th while on ATVs, or all-terrain vehicles. Senior supervisors have an average of over 20 years of experience working on the beach, with 90 percent of them acting as current or former firefighters and EMS volunteers. So, what does it take to be a Virginia Beach lifeguard? Minimum requirements have to be met, which include being at least 16 years old of age, passing a milelong run test in 8:30 or less, and swimming 500 meters in or under 10 minutes. Each of these physical tests has to be completed each year; this year’s tests began in April. “The typical VBLS lifeguard is 18 to 20 years of age, but we have guards on the stand in their 60s!” Tom Gill, chief of Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service says. Once the tests are met, they are trained in first aid and CPR.

“On average, more than 75 lifeguards work each day to monitOr between 1st and 42nd street, 57th street and at Croatan…”

behind the buoy

A typical day in the lifeguard begins like this: Men and women report to the VBLS headquarters for muster at 9 a.m. to retrieve their buoy, first aid kit, a communications radio and their street assignment for the day. Once they reach their stands, the whistles sound at 9:30 a.m. The guards then participate in a series of aerobic and anaerobic workouts with running and/or swimming. “During the morning, guards will participate in a workout/ safety drill meant to improve conditioning and reinforce water or medical protocols.” Sometimes these exercises incorporate weighted objects, such as sandbags or sand-filled plastic pipes, as well. To further keep the guards on their feet, they’ll sometimes be surprised by a “mock rescue.” “Mock rescues are our way of testing the guard’s reaction time, operational awareness and teamwork,” Gill says. “This is crucial for new guards who have yet to experience a true water rescue. Sometimes we make it painfully obvious [by] dropping manikins off the PWC (personal watercraft), and other times we sneak guards out of uniform in the water to mimic real victims.” The guards then stand watch until 6 p.m., when the whistles sound, and they sign off until 9:30 a.m. the next day. However, some stands remain staffed until dusk—12 on weekdays and 15 on weekends. Last summer, VBLS guards rescued over 700 patrons, responded to more than 200 medical incidents and reunited over 400 lost children. “At the end of the day, the purity of lifesaving remains the same—a lifeguard watching over swimmers performing water rescues and providing first aid as needed,” Gill says. “What has changed is the amount of training [and] the use of technology (radios, ATVs, AEDs, etc.) to enhance the capabilities of the guards.” z

Enjoy a message of Grace, Love and Unity at 757Life Church. We’d love to have you join us Sundays at 10am. Great children’s program. Friendly, outgoing people. Check out our website for location details. Sr. Pastors Daniel and Michelle Hines info@757life.com | 757Life.com
