A Paradise for the Palate Impeccable culinary creations are found throughout the Historic Triangle’s dining scene.

Ever since the Jamestown settlers took their first bite of the Chesapeake Bay’s famous blue crab and delectable James River oysters, fine dining has been a top priority in the region. Since then the food scene has evolved tremendously. Cultural traditions have melded to create a truly diverse selection of restaurants rarely found in one area, and top chefs are taking over the Historic Triangle’s dining spots, putting their expert touches on each individual dish. These factors, combined with the copious bounty of fresh seafood and ripe fruits and veggies harvested locally, make Williamsburg a culinary Mecca for five-star dining. Throughout the Historic Triangle, dining options abound, making it an effortless task to find an impeccable meal fit for the most discerning of palates. Embark on a culinary journey through the countries of Italy, China, Japan, France, Mexico, Greece, Thailand and more as you sample authentically prepared dishes made right here in Williamsburg. Many chefs pay homage to the regional treasures that are handpicked from coastal Virginia’s waters and land. As the seasons change, so do the menus. As the chill wears off during spring, look for dishes brimming with freshly picked strawberries or tender asparagus shoots. Summer’s harvest brings forth a plethora of farm fresh veggies, including plump, juicy heirloom tomatoes, crisp cucumbers and sweet corn. Seafood is another commodity that’s harvested locally, and the options for preparation are endless. Take your pick of luscious grilled scallops drizzled with arugula pesto or pan-seared rockfish with lemon beurre blanc. Oysters are one of the region’s most sought after delicacies, cultivated from the James and York Rivers. The highly distinguished bivalves are served raw with mignonette or hot sauce and a lemon wedge; roasted and topped with butter, bacon and panko crumbs; or breaded, fried and dipped in a delicious sauce. Of course meats are always in season, but there’s a lot more to it than your average burgers and steaks. This category is where chefs perform some of their wildest experimentations, and the results are always extraordinary. Menus boast offerings such as slow roasted pork belly with braised fennel, bacon-wrapped quail stuffed with goat cheese, roasted prime rib with Yorkshire pudding and grass-fed burgers topped with foie gras. Perhaps you’ve got a sweet tooth you can’t seem to satisfy. Williamsburg is known for its divine selection of pastries, tortes and other marvelous confections. Pick up a yummy treat from a nearby cupcakery or a box of chocolate truffles from a sweet shop to enjoy on the ride home. The area’s restaurants have perfected the art of sugary selections, and you’re likely to find that it’s difficult choosing just one dessert to share. Go ahead and indulge; it’s absolutely worth it. Naturally there are some patrons whose standards surpass even the most discriminating tastes—the picky child. Not to worry; the abundant selections of fairly priced and kid-friendly restaurants in Williamsburg will leave your family feeling satisfied and in good spirits for each meal of the day. Start your morning off with a heaping stack of pancakes smothered in maple syrup and made-toorder omelets. For lunch, visit an American-style diner for a flavorful barbecue sandwich, or stop by an outdoor café to enjoy a fresh salad or bistro sandwich. The youngsters will enjoy dinner and a show at one of the entertaining dinner theaters, complete with endless selections of their favorite culinary creations. There’s truly something for everyone when dining in the Historic Triangle, so get your taste buds ready for a meal that will go down in history!

Nothing goes with a fabulous meal better than a frosty mug of beer or a chilled glass of wine—especially if the beverages were locally bottled. Williamsburg and surrounding areas are home to several breweries and wineries, so spend a day learning about the production of grapes and hops at some of the local places, and don’t forget to sample a few in the process! Established in 2006, Alewerks Brewing Company produces six types of beers featured year-round as well as seasonal beers. Whether you’re craving a wheat ale, a white ale or an IPA, Alewerks’ selection of year-round and seasonal beers are sure to please. Tours are offered every day at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. For just $6, guests can taste the variety of beers available on tap, so choose your favorite and buy a pint or a growler to enjoy at home. Just north on Interstate 264, Brass Cannon Brewing Co. in Toano is mixing the old world and new to create unique and dynamic beers. Although relatively fresh to the scene, this brewery prepares ales and stouts that are big on the lips, smooth on the finish and will have you both satisfied and begging for more. Their tasting room is open Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday noon–7 p.m., and their offerings vary from red to brown ale, amber and a full bodied stout. They currently offer beers on tap as well as growlers and kegs. While the best beer is being brewed nearby some of the best wines are being fermented just up the highway. Saudé Creek Winery marries the French varieties of grapes with the rich soil of New Kent County to create vintages that pair well with many of your favorite dishes. Monday from 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Tastings are $7 to sample their wines and include a Saudé Creek souvenir glass. Recognized by the Virginia Governor’s Cup in 2011 for their sensational whites, New Kent Winery & Vineyard is an accessible experience for those looking for an exceptional day of wine tasting and learning. They offer a variety of wines ranging from chardonnay and vidal blanc to merlot, meritage and white norton. Their warm and inviting tasting bar is open Tuesday–Sunday from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. The $8 tasting and tour fee includes an etched souvenir glass and entitles you to a tasting of any of their wines in current production along with wine crackers to cleanse your palate. Known for producing some of the best wines in the world, The Williamsburg Winery offers a variety of wines from rich, red merlot to crisp, white chardonnay to pleasantly sweet dessert wines. Partake in one of their three offered winery tours and tastings, including the general tour offered every half hour, the extensive tour and reserve wine tasting, available by reservation only in their private wine cellar, and the tour and tasting with lunch in the Gabriel Archer Tavern overlooking the vineyards. The winery is also home to Café Provençal, an upscale culinary experience that you’ll remember for a lifetime. Enjoy a glass of wine paired with an incredible offering at one of the restaurants, and spend an unforgettable afternoon basking in the delightful atmosphere of fine Virginia wine.

A SWEET AND SAVORY SOJOURN ALONG THE JAMES RIVER
The image of starry-eyed voyagers in gallant ships propelled by big, billowy sails moving up the James River, triumphantly setting foot on the shore, and thus establishing the Virginia colony in 1607, is the stuff of fiction. Truth-be-told, the first settlers probably were excited, but probably scared out of their wits, too. What this handful of men and boys were doing was nothing short of setting foot on the moon, for all practical purposes. They were far from their natal home of England. Very far. The land was marshy. The water brackish. There were mosquitos. There were Native Americans, some friendly, some not. They had to construct a fort. They had to fish, they had to farm. They were tasked to look for riches to send back across the sea, but along the way, they founded a new country. “In the beginning, all America was Virginia,” said William Byrd, a trendsetting planter and author, in 1732. And that was true. Not only was Virginia being established, but so was America. The tiny Jamestown settlement grew and became her first capital. Later, the seat of government moved just a few miles as the crow flies to Middle Plantation, now known as Williamsburg. It became the capital in 1699. Life became a bit more settled, and civilized. Williamsburg housed an institute of higher learning – still in business today – the College of William & Mary. Streets were laid out into grids, markets established, an impressive brick church built, and an even more impressive palace for the royal governor erected. In 1673, William Byrd, the same one from the quote, was granted lands further north and west, on the James River near the falls. It was here that the original street plan for JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT Richmond would be laid out in 1737, and here that the town thrived as a terminus for commerce along the liquid highway. And it was here, in 1780, that Virginia’s capital moved one last time. Virginia is a tale of three capitals, and I wanted to explore each of them. Tobacco is no longer king, but food and wine are; the Old Dominion has a growing reputation for stellar restaurants and wineries. These, coupled with historic sites, were on my agenda to explore over the course of a couple of days.

We were fortunate to stay at Wedmore Place, adjacent to Williamsburg Winery, during our stay in the colonial capital. Winemaker Matthew Meyer showed tremendous hospitality during a tasting, which included a number of vintages. Since their first release in 1988, Williamsburg Winery has saUDé CrEEk WinErY grown in their offerings, and British-born and Californiatrained Meyer has brought a talented touch to the wine. Kevin Zraly, renowned wine educator and founder of the Windows on the World Wine School says, “… The Williamsburg Winery has some of the best wines in the world.” We sure enjoyed what we sampled. Highlights were the Gabriel Archer Reserve 2009, a gorgeous complex red blend with dark fruit, red fruit jam and some earthy tones. Matthew’s Chardonnay 2011 was a beautiful, balanced wine with citrus and lemon and just a bit of minerality. The Late Harvest Vidal Blanc 2012 is a rich, syrupy dessert wine with tones of honey and almond. Further up the road, at Saudé Creek, we wandered on the expansive deck, looking out over a serene wooded area down to the Pamunkey River before stepping inside and settling down in the WiLLiaMsBUrG WinErY impressive tasting room, reminiscent of a lodge. We enjoyed a sample of a few wines, with the Cabernet Franc 2013 being a standout; inky in color, heady in nose, and the taste of black cherries, violets and a hint of peppercorn was delightful. The very drinkable Tavern Whit blend would be perfect for a summer patio setting. Nearby is New Kent Winery, a gorgeous facility with a porfolio of palate-pleasing vinetages which we’ve enjoyed on previous visits.
