A SPECIAL ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT

Many American soldiers returning from Vietnam never received the homecoming they deserved, and Fayetteville wants to change that. We created Heroes Homecoming as our way of showing all Vietnam veterans we remember and appreciate their courage and their sacrifice. Heroes Homecoming will be the biggest commemoration/ reunion of its kind for the 10 days leading up to and including Veterans Day, featuring celebrations, discussions, fellowship and memories for all those who attend. It will be a story of education, dialogue and celebration. It will be a story of a long-deserved welcome home. Heroes Homecoming will promote informed dialogue, discussion and celebration to allow our community to be able, perhaps for the first time, to discuss that period of time in our nation and community’s history and deal with the complicated emotions arising from veterans’ personal stories. It will promote a period of reflection and self discovery, allowing each of us to come to our own informed conclusions and take what we have learned with them. It will challenge the beliefs and assumptions of that period that helped shape the world as we see it. It will make us all aware of the interconnection that exists between our values, to better appreciate the values of others, and to appreciate the common bond that we share, not merely with each other, but with the military and military-community members of today. We encourage you to get involved in this exciting and rewarding project. Visit our website at heroeshomecoming.com. Volunteer to get involved. Take time to participate in the community discussions we have planned. Learn about our national history and this community’s unique role in it. Thank a Vietnam veteran, invite them to Fayetteville and help us to welcome them home. Let us commit to each other that there will never be another generation that misunderstands the relationship between Vietnam and our community, and there will never be another American that doesn’t appreciate the heroes from that era. Let us commit that there will not be another Vietnam War veteran who leaves us without receiving the welcome home from this country that they so rightfully deserve. I look forward to seeing you there. Sincerely, Mayor Tony Chavonne Chair, Heroes Homecoming

HEROES HOMECOMING

Our Vietnam veterans’ long-awaited welcome home Fayetteville created Heroes Homecoming as our way of showing all Vietnam Vietnam vete ve veterans erans rans w wee re remember remember and appreciate their courage, sacrifice and everything they’ve done our freedom nee to defend def d fend end ou urr fre freed dom om – now and forever. American soldiers returning from Vietnam never received ived the th homecoming homec om ccoming oming ming g they hey deserved, and Fayetteville wants to rectify that. We have a unique bond with Vietnam veterans since our town was the point of departure and return for hundreds of thousands of soldiers. As America’s first Military Sanctuary Community, we will give our brave Vietnam veterans the welcome they so richly deserve. Fayetteville will host Heroes Homecoming as the biggest commemoration/reunion of its kind for the 10 days leading up to Veterans Day, featuring celebrations, discussions, fellowship and memories for all those who attend. Heroes Homecoming is intended for three major groups in the Fayetteville and Cumberland County community and throughout the country: Vietnam veterans, native-born Vietnamese, and Fayetteville residents who, for 50 years, have lived with the town’s “Fayettenam” reputation without completely understanding what it means and how we can collectively move past that stigma. Through Heroes Homecoming, we will give Vietnam veterans from across the country the welcome home they never received, honor the native-born Vietnamese who immigrated to the United States in search of the American dream, and show that Fayetteville is a community that embodies positive change and evolution in moving forward from a less-than-perfect reputation. Many current residents lived in the area during the 1960s and experienced the political and social unrest surrounding the war, which led to an undesirable reputation. Generations of residents since have grown up with the city’s reputation from that period and have been unable to move past it – until now. Fayetteville has changed dramatically in the past 50 years and is a proud military community that exhibits desirable American values. It proudly claims its mission of “watching over those who watch over us.” In 2008 Time magazine recognized Fayetteville as America’s most pro-military community, and in 2009 Newsmax magazine listed Fayetteville as one of the top 25 cities and towns that best express our national values. The city is also home to the North Carolina Veterans Park, a place of honor for all of the state’s veterans. Fort Bragg, the largest military installation in America, is now included in the Fayetteville city limits. Its forces serve as the tip of the spear in defense of the country’s freedom, and its troops have experienced multiple deployments since 9/11. Many of the changes included in the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC) will result in Fort Bragg having 32 generals, effectively becoming Pentagon South. In a continuing effort to create healing among the Vietnam veteran community, Heroes Homecoming has been designed to celebrate the city’s history and cultural diversity, while promoting an atmosphere of appreciation between Fayetteville and Vietnam and giving thanks to those who fought for us in that conflict. We hope through the Heroes Homecoming’s 10 days of education, information, discussion and dialogue, Fayetteville citizens will be more informed and actively committed to share their experiences with others and use those experiences to grow as a community. Hopefully these discussions will lead to a better understanding of what we can learn from those experiences and how to apply them to the challenges currently faced by one of America’s largest military communities.

No one recognizes this more so than the USO of North Carolina. In honor of the Heroes Homecoming, it is only fitting to have entertainment that truly understands our service members and their families. Connie Stevens and the USO Liberty Bells are all too familiar with our military traveling to numerous locations across the world. They pay tribute to those soldiers’ service through entertainment. Connie Stevens has spent her entire life in the entertainment industry and toured with Bob Hope around the globe, often saying of Veterans, “They are my favorite Americans.” Her dedication was honored by Vietnam Veterans Association of America, and she received her personal favorite treasure, the Decoration for Distinguished Civilian Service, from the United States Armed Forces. This is the highest honor that can be bestowed on a civilian. The USO Liberty Bells are also part of this American tradition that began with the muddy camp shows

of the South Pacific nearly 70 years ago. Through the years, the USO Liberty Bells have dazzled audiences around the world. For the troops they provide the opportunity for a short escape from the burdens of war and rigorous training. Their energetic performances feature WWII era hit songs such as “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Don’t Sit under the Apple Tree,” and “I’ll be Seeing You” along with an array of contemporary songs such as “Single Ladies,” “Mercy,” “Sway” and “Here for the Party.”
