ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTE Welcome to BAM!’s FIRST SHOW… EVER! I cannot begin to express how wonderful the journey has been leading up to this moment. I need to start by saying welcome to the BAM! family! The creation and development of BAM! (Bay Area Musicals) has been ongoing for over a year now. Our goal is to be the signature San Francisco company dedicated solely to the craft and development of the American musical. We are inspired by the shining leadership of the Lyric Theatre of Atlanta, the 5th Avenue Theater of Seattle and the North Shore Music Theatre of Massachusetts. We founded BAM! on three pillars of commitment: to exemplify Bay Area diversity in season selections, casting, and professional development; to produce professional productions at accessible ticket rates; and to engage the community through performance, outreach, and educational opportunities. Founded in 2014, BAM! is a professional non-profit theater company that strives to stimulate and inspire the San Francisco Bay Area community through high-caliber musical theater ranging from familiar classics to challenging new works. BAM! was founded by local artists and supporters who want to bring the healing and transformative experiences found in musical theater to our community and beyond. Even more exciting—we finally get to show you what we have been working on this past year! And boy, do we have a treat for you! How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying is considered a classic in the musical theater canon. This show is filled with an incredible group of experienced, professional, and trained talent both seasoned and fresh. A comedic send-up of big business and all it holds sacred, How To Succeed... follows the rise of J. Pierrepont Finch, who uses a little handbook on business success to climb the corporate ladder from lowly window washer to high-powered executive, tackling such familiar but potent dangers as the aggressively compliant company man, the office party, backstabbing co-workers, caffeine addiction and, of course, true love - all things anyone can relate to. Later in our inaugural season we will be presenting two other Tony Award-winning shows: Hair and La Cage aux Folles. It’s an opening season full of Broadway blockbusters not to be missed. I founded BAM! because musical theater has been my constant inspiration, escape, and joy since watching my first Broadway production at age 12. I believe in BAM! because I am surrounded by a team of collaborators committed to telling innovative stories that will have a profound impact on audiences. Our board members and the artists engaged for How to Succeed… have a demonstrated commitment to BAM!’s vision and our mission as an emerging Bay Area musical theater institution. In the coming months I hope to partner with more of you and grow our family. At BAM! we strive to strengthen the work of the many artists who came together to bring important stores to the stage, and to build a foundation for creative theater professionals and to build a platform for community engagement on and off the stage. We have many shows to come! Since BAM’s birth announcement this past January, we have received an exhilarating welcome from the community at large, and I thank you for your positive thoughts, buzz, and excitement at our arrival. I want to personally thank everyone who has helped get us here and for welcoming us into the theater community with open arms. Tonight, I hope you walk away feeling a tingle from experiencing an outstanding evening of theater that pushes important social questions and inspires new thinking—within yourself and our community. All my best,

CREATIVE TEAM FRANK LOESSER (Composer,
Lyricist) began his songwriting career during the Depression, contributing songs to Broadway revues and nightclub acts. His work with composer Irving Actman in the 1936 revue The Illustrator’s Show led to a songwriting contract in Hollywood, working with such composers as Burton Lane, Jule Styne, Arthur Schwartz and Hoagy Carmichael. Some of his songs from that period include “Two Sleepy People” and “I Don’t Want To Walk Without You.” The first song for
which Loesser wrote both words and music was “Praise The Lord And Pass The Ammunition.” His Hollywood work after the war included the 1949 Oscar-winning song “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” In 1948 Loesser was approached by fledgling Broadway producers Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin to write music and lyrics to George Abbott’s libretto for an adaptation of the classic Brandon Thomas play Charley’s Aunt. Where’s Charley? was a hit and led to Loesser’s next show, Guys and Dolls in 1950, produced by Feuer and Martin,
with a script by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling. In 1956 Loesser wrote the libretto, music and lyrics for The Most Happy Fella. This impressive score contains over 30 musical numbers and makes extensive use of operatic techniques and forms. In 1960 he provided the score and was co-librettist for Greenwillow. In 1961, Loesser wrote the score for the Pulitzer Prize-winning How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. His last show, Pleasures and Palaces, closed in 1965 during outof-town try-outs. frankloesser.com 2015.11 • BAYSTAGES.COM

He was medical director of a life insurance company, surgeon at two hospitals and had a Fifth Avenue medical practice. MATTHEW MCCOY (Director) is proud to now call San Francisco home. Before moving here in 2012, Matthew performed, directed, choreographed and produced plays, musicals, cabarets and magic production shows nationally and internationally. He has worked 12
