WELCOME! Growing up in Columbia, South Carolina I was taught through my community that homosexuality is wrong. I never saw gay couples together, walking hand-in- hand, or hugging. And kissing - forget it! I decided to hide my true feelings. I was an inthe- closet homosexual. Every year I would travel to New York City for one week and see as many shows as possible. It was my vacation. My escape. I was still struggling with the fact that I was gay when I first saw La Cage aux Folles. Harvey Fierstein was in the title role, Zaza, and at the end of the first act when his raspy voice bellowed the trumpeting anthem, “I Am What I Am,” tears began to stream down my cheeks. I was so moved by Albin’s proclamation, “life’s not worth a damn, ‘til you can say, ‘Hey world, I am what I am!’” At that moment, I decided it was time to open up my closet and I called my parents to come out. They didn’t take the news well, but slowly began to do research and become more familiar with the LGBTQ community. Together we were able to break down the years of prejudice and come to a place of acceptance.

La Cage aux Folles was the first Broadway musical to center around two gay men and end the show with a romantic kiss. A story of love, marriage, acceptance and forgiveness. My wish is that every single person in the audience will be as moved as I was six years ago and exclaim, “I am what I am!” I invite you to open your eyes, your heart, and your mind… you have arrived at La Cage aux Folles.

Endless thanks to the Bay Area theater community for their confidence and support, and to friends and family for their continued love!

RICHARD GUTIERREZ (Dresser, Wardrobe Supervisor) spent ten years performing with the Muhlenburg Summer Music Theatre and performed Off-Broadway at the Performing Garage and Theater for the New City. He loves playing two people as was the case in productions of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing (Ninjaz Of Drama) and Measure For Measure, The Taming of the Shrew and Macbeth (Theater of Others). He has also performed with the late great Civic Free Theater and with the 16th Street Players. He is the production manager for Landmark Musical Theatre where he has just completed the Bay Area premiere of The Boy from Oz. He enjoys working in all areas of theatre and is thrilled to be part of his first Bay Area Musicals production. JULIE INDELICATO (Sound Designer)

has been working in the San Francisco music scene for almost a decade. She is most known for her work on City College of San Francisco's Urinetown and Hick: A Love Story at Theatre Rhinoceros. More recently, she founded the independent theater company, Sapphic Underground, where she is artistic director. Although Julie has tried her hand at almost every aspect of the stage, with roles ranging from actress to director to sound engineer, she has found sound design to be the perfect combination of technical prowess and creativity and is very excited to be working on such an incredible show with such amazing cast and design team. You can find her behind the sound board at several local San Francisco venues including the Hotel Utah Saloon, the Chapel, and the Regency.

Credits include Colossal, The Nether and Stage Kiss (San Francisco Playhouse), Peter

Pan (Berkeley Playhouse), Capulet Ball, HeroMonster and Ondine at Sutro (We Players), A Lie of the Mind, Bad Jews (assistant designer, Magic Theatre), the New York premiere of The Singularity, plus Crooked and Ransom, Texas in San Francisco (Virago Theatre), Six Degrees of Separation, Middletown, Sam and Dede, Of Serpents and Sea Spray, In Love and Warcraft, This is Our Youth, Grey Gardens, How the World Began, Late: A Cowboy Song and The Crucible (Custom Made), The Rocky Horror Show (City Lights Theater Company) and A Year with Frog and Toad (assistant designer, Santa Cruz Shakespeare). Brooke received a 2015 TBA Award nomination for Outstanding Costume Design for her work on We Players’ Ondine at Sutro, directed by Ava Roy and Carly Cioffi.

Master Carpenter) is the resident technical director and master carpenter for Berkeley Playhouse and for Contra Costa Civic Theatre in El Cerrito. He has designed, technically directed and/or built over seventy shows in the last four years including designing The Pain and the Itch, The Crucible, Three Tall Women (SFBATCC Award nominee), Grey Gardens and This is Our Youth (Custom Made Theatre Co.) and directing and designing Wait Until Dark, Art, Man of La Mancha, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling

Bee, Moonlight and Magnolias, The Fantasticks, Rent, Blood Brothers and, most recently, The Light in the Piazza for Alameda’s Altarena Playhouse. A member of Actors' Equity Association, he has appeared in over one hundred productions throughout California, including major and featured roles with TheatreWorks, San Jose Stage Company, Pacific Repertory Theatre, Center REPertory Company, Diablo Theatre Company, Palo Alto Players, the Mountain Play and, most recently, in Almost, Maine (Altarena Playhouse) and as Thénardier in Les Misérables (Woodminster Summer Musicals). Love and thanks always to Donna.

SAM SHERRY (Directing Intern) is very excited to be back home this summer and learning from the incredible team of La Cage! A Bay Area native and current directing student at UCLA's School of Theater, Film, and Television, Sam is happy to be developing her skills as a director before returning to school to direct her first full-length musical in the fall. Her experience in musical theatre thus far has been performing on stage but, after taking a directing class at UCLA, she realized her eventual goal of being a director and producer of musical theatre. This year at UCLA, she has worked as a producer for Act III Theatre Ensemble and as executive director and co-founder of Dually Noted Theatre Company, a group dedicated to the cultivation of original works of musical theatre. She would like to thank Matthew and everyone at Bay Area Musicals for welcoming her for the summer. Enjoy the show! HOLLY STATEN (Assistant Stage

Manager) has been performing and working in theatre for fifteen years and is happy to be a part of her first show with Bay Area Musicals. Some favorite shows have been Nunsense, Little Shop of Horrors and The Rocky Horror Show. Holly is currently studying vocal performance at the University of Portland. ●
